Curbside grocery pickup is being released nationwide and according to Matt O’Halloran, market e-commerce manager for western Ohio and eastern Indiana, it has been well received. Some of the stores in his region are already seeing over 1,000 orders per week. “Today is a big day,” said O’Halloran. “I just want to make sure everybody knows how important it really is. If you look at Walmart right now, it’s a brutal environment for retail. The way to survive today is through automation.” O’Halloran pointed to a robotic floor cleaner used in the store. “Walmart is going to be doing more and more of

GREENVILLE – It became official on Tuesday morning – you don’t have to get out of your car to shop at the Greenville Walmart. Associates and community leaders gathered to cut the ribbon on Walmart’s curbside grocery pickup. According to Dylan Davis, e-commerce assistant manager, “Online grocery pickup is a convenience for the community, whether that be a mom that can’t get in the store with the kids, all they have to do is pull up to the outside parking spot after they’ve placed their order.” The process is quick and easy. Customers can download the Walmart app and get started. With more than one app available from Walmart, Davis pointed out customers need to download the app with a white asterisk on an orange background. The app is titled Walmart Grocery Shopping. Create an account after you’ve downloaded the app, complete your shopping list and your order can be at your car in as little as five minutes. The best part for Walmart customers is there is no charge. However, your

Birt named grand marshal of Hometown Holiday Horse Parade GREENVILLE – Main Street Greenville’s Board of Directors and the Horse Parade Committee have named Betty Birt, previous Main Street Greenville Board secretary, as the grand marshal of the 2019 Hometown Holiday Horse Parade. Birt graduated in 1967 from Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst, Ill. (a NW suburb of Chicago), before attending and graduating from Siena Heights University in Adrian, Mich. in 1971. Birt married Rick Birt, who was born and raised in Greenville, in November 1971. “I ended up in Greenville just like a lot of ‘transplants’ have,” said Birt. “My husband, Rick, told me that he would take me to ‘God’s country’ and here I am! And very happy that I am!” Birt first began volunteering for Main Street Greenville under the leadership of Amber Schmerge and worked closely with both Amber and Deanna York, the previous executive director of the Darke County Visitors Bureau. She collaborated with Deanna to bring GOBA (Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure) to Greenville. When the Main Street
Greenville Executive Director role was filled by Amber Garrett, Birt’s involvement grew as the two had previously worked together for several years at BRC. She became a member of the board in 2013 and served as board secretary beginning in 2015. During her term on the board, First Fridays were instituted and quickly grew to be an integral part of the services that Main Street Greenville offers. Her involvement and consistent volunteerism helped to create a vibrancy in the district that attracted new businesses and spurred more interest in the downtown from the citizens of Greenville. “Betty Birt was an easy choice to serve as a Main Street Greenville Board Member,” said previous director Amber Garrett. “Her positive attitude, willingness to volunteer, and her continuous support of downtown Greenville were all beneficial to the organization over the years. Betty has been involved with numerous projects, programs, and events including the free pony rides during the Hometown Holiday Horse Parade.” When asked about her
favorite part of downtown Greenville, Birt named almost every event that takes place downtown. When not volunteering, Betty and Rick enjoy travel, spending time at Indian Lake, and living within walking distance to all of the downtown activities, restaurants, and shopping! “And of course,” Birt says, “the best of any activity always involves family and friends.” The 16th Annual Hometown Holiday Horse Parade is just such an Courtesy photo activity, as all are invited Diana Stebbins, horse parade chair, and Crysta Hutchinson Bloomingdale, executive director of Main Street to bring family and friends Greenville, presented Betty Birt with the honor of serving as the 2019 Hometown Holiday Horse Parade grand marshal. to enjoy the spectacle of 90+ lighted horse drawn carriages, buggies, and riders as they jingle through downtown and welcome in the holiday season. The 2019 event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 23, with pre-parade entertainment beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the parade starting at 7 p.m. You can find additional information on Main Street Greenville’s website, www.mainstreetgreenville. org or follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/mainstreetgreenville. Washington School reunion set GREENVILLE-A reunion of former students and staff will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 10 at the old Washington Elementary School on Wagner Road, west of Greenville off State Route 571 near Coletown. Washington Elementary School was closed when a Greenville school levy failed in the early 1960s, according to Melissa Brawley, a former student. The original school was called McClure School. An original report stated that Washington Township #5 School was significantly expanded in the 1950s to become the Washington Township Rural School, consolidating all of the students from the rural one-room schools in the township.

This is the photo of Washington Elementary School, which was in existence for many years and will be the scene of an upcoming reunion for anyone who attended school or taught there.
It eventually merged into the Greenville City School District in the early 1960s where it served as Washington Elementary School until the 1980s. “Part of the building now is a church. The other part of the building is
the minister’s residence,” Brawley said. “We are asking people to bring old pictures and stories to reminisce. It’s not for any specific class. It’s for everyone whoever went to McClure/ Washington School. Pass the word along.”

Ryan Acker opens Greenville headquarters GREENVILLE – The Committee to Elect Ryan Acker has named Greenville as its national headquarters at 139 N. Broadway, and is excited to officially launch its year-long campaign on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The headquarters is located beside MaidRite and behind the new tattoo shop. “We’re excited to make Greenville our national headquarters,” says Ryan Acker, who is preparing his official candidacy for President of the United States. “It’s one of America’s rural heartlands, known for Whirlpool, Kitchen Aid, the Great Darke County Fair, MaidRite, as well as bringing together the indigenous peoples of America and the United States with the Treaty of Greenville.” On Tuesday, Nov. 5, the Committee is hosting its first meet and greet from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and any interested members of the community are welcome to stop by to speak with Acker and members of the committee. After Tuesday, the office’s normal hours will be MondayFriday from 2-6 p.m. or by appointment. Those with mobility issues or devices are encouraged to call ahead for accommodations. Parking is available at Prairie Ridge. “We have a candidate
who is making his pledge directly to the American people, and Greenville is part of that,” says AJ Murphy, the Committee’s Campaign Manager. “We want to provide our local community the opportunity to come in and ask questions about Ryan’s plans for the United States.” Acker, who is running as an independent candidate, has outlined his comprehensive strategies in his new book, My First 110 Days as President of the United States. The book is available to the public free online and available for purchase in a paperback copy at www. ackerforpresident.com. “I want to make sure Americans know exactly where I stand, and why, on the important issues facing our communities today,” says Acker. “But more importantly, I want to show Americans how we can make great things like health care and tax reform really happen in our lifetimes.” The Committee to Elect Ryan Acker is also seeking volunteers, donations and supporters. She’s going to keep it forever.” I don’t want to call my youngest daughter selfish, but none of the other words in the thesaurus described her as well; although, I did like the word hoggish. That has changed a little over the years and she has become a lot more giving. Unfortunately, her giving attitude wasn’t the reason she invited me to have lunch with her. We’ve purposely tried to eat at home more and I’ve done a lot more cooking. Not everything I make is healthy, but it still doesn’t give her the fix she needs for her fast food craving - tacos, roast beef sandwiches, and chicken nuggets. She could have easily gone by herself to one of these restaurants, but why not have a daddy daughter date, right? That’s not it at all. It was better to be seen with her dad in
public than it was to be seen eating by herself. In her mind, she was paying me (with food) so she wouldn’t appear to be pathetic. That was her mind set. My mind set was – Woo hoo, I’m getting a free meal. I have no problem eating alone and looking pathetic. It’s a lot cheaper than taking somebody with me and I don’t have to argue about what we’re going to eat. My youngest daughter has yet to invite my wife to lunch or dinner and pay. The key word here is “pay”. They’ve been out to eat plenty of times without me. My wife won’t let her pay. My wife is being selfish. I never want to cheat my children out of an opportunity to be blessed by showing kindness to someone else. Even Jesus said it is more blessed to give than to receive. I just want to be a blessing. Davison to coach Ansonia Lady Tigers ANSONIA – Bruce Davison, a 1985 MississinawaValley alum takes over the Ansonia Lady Tigers head basketball coaching job with 17 years of high school coaching experience and five years at the junior high level. “I appreciate the opportunity that was given to me by Mr. Atchley, Mr. Robson and Mr. Macy as well as the school board,” said Davison. “I’m looking forward to it, not only getting to know the girls but the opportunity to work together and to accomplish the things we have before us. I’m looking forward to it as well as working with our JV coach Abbie Helmke and working with assistant varsity coach Thom Kukasky. Davison was a starter for the Blackhawks basketball program his junior season under head coach Bill Courtney and Steve Brewer his senior year. Current CCC Commissioner, John Butch was Davison’s freshman coach and his sophomore season, Steve Brewer was his coach. Davison graduated from Ball State University before going on to work in Indianapolis where he met his wife Kim. The couple
lived 10 years in the Indianapolis. Coach Davison moved back to the area to teach business and serve as athletic director at Mississinawa Valley and later filled the role of guidance counselor along with the school’s AD. “There are still a lot of individuals I know in the Cross County Conference from being athletic director before and just being in that area,” said Davison. “I’m looking forward to it.” Davison crossed the state line to become the Union City Community High School Athletic Director along with coaching freshman and JV basketball before two-plus years as the varsity boys basketball coach. Coach Davison took time to talk basketball coaching at the high school level beginning with discipline. “Discipline is a big part of it in any part of our life,” Davison said. “Self-discipline, if anyone is going to go to another level in their life you have to have self-discipline. Discipline is often what separates individuals. Discipline is a part of life to be successful and to move ahead to another level.” “Sports should enhance other areas of your life,” continued Davison. “It
that goes with coaching, not just wins and losses. “I remember every coach I ever had whether from junior high all the way to the last year that I played,” shared Davison. “It’s amazing the influence a coach has on a player that goes way beyond the given sport. YFC banquet to impact teens GREENVILLE – Youth for Christ recently announced its annual Report to the People and Fundraising Banquet will be held Nov. 18 and 19 at the Greenville City Schools K-8 cafetorium.
There are several reasons one might choose to attend including a delicious meal, time of fellowship with family and friends, and an entertaining and meaningful program. However, there is a much more
important and compelling reason than just these. The most significant reason to attend the YFC banquets is because “Kids Matter” and this is an opportunity to make a difference in their lives!
We put our patients first.

“Kids Matter” because they are created in God’s image with potential and promise to make a difference in their world. They are not disposable. However, just about every day, YFC ministry leaders interact with kids who are having their potential and promise stripped away. Many teenagers have been deeply wounded by decimated families, toxic relationships, and people who want to use them for their own gain. Most teenagers have no idea how much God loves them or about the purpose He’s instilled in their lives. By engaging in this movement anyone can show kids why they matter and help them find their way. This year’s YFC events will take place from 6:308:45 p.m. on Nov. 18 and 19. Each night will begin with a meal prepared by Catering by Michael, followed by a program that will include video, drama, testimonies of teenagers whose lives have been impacted through the ministry, and sharing by adults that are involved in the mission, communicating why they care. Attendees will learn how they can impact a teenager’s life through investments of time, resources, influence, and prayer. There is no cost to attend the YFC banquet; reservations are required. A long list of local businesses and individuals are

underwriting expenses so more people can become involved. Toward the end of the evening, an opportunity to invest time and treasure will be given, but no one will be pressured to participate. The cause itself is very worthy, so joyful and willing partners are being sought. Together, those who care can impact not only individual teenagers’ lives, but our whole community To reserve your place at these events, contact YFC at 548-2477 or office@ yfcmv.org and tell which night you’ll attend and the number in your party. You should know this event is intended for adults only because of the focus of the program and to maximize the investment of the underwriters. Finally, if you’d like to bring friends it’s not too late to reserve an entire table of eight and
become a table host for the event. There is no financial cost to host a table, just an opportunity to help further a significant cause and make a difference for even more teens. The impact of YFC ministry leaders in the community is great even though so much happens at such an individual level that the entire picture is rarely known. Last school year, more than 70 adult leaders interacted with more than 1,300 teenagers, involving nearly 900 in meetings and activities, and building relationships with 686 teens where important matters of life and faith were shared throughout Darke and Preble Counties. Yet, there is much work yet to do. Because “Kids Matter,” showing them God’s love and helping them find their way is a way our lives can matter too.
Bogart, Bacall at GPL GREENVILLE – The Greenville Public Library’s Third Floor Film Series will next screen the 1946 film noir The Big Sleep, directed by Howard Hawks and starring real-life couple Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in one of their most legendary on-screen pairings. Based on the novel by Raymond Chandler and a screenplay co-written by novelist William Faulkner, The Big Sleep is full of film noir trappings, from a labyrinthine plot and snappy dialogue to moody
cinematography and a subtextual evaluation of right and wrong. Films in this genre were often less about plot and more about atmosphere and the chemistry of their stars. Few were able to rival the magnetism of Bogie and Bacall. The Big Sleep is one of the most stylish films noir ever made. Join them on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided and a short discussion will follow the film. Whistle Stop adds delivery ANSONIA – The list of improvements at The Whistle Stop in Ansonia continues to grow with the recent addition of a delivery service. “The service started three weeks ago and we have seen nice results,” stated Owner Andrew Riffle. “I am a firm believer that if we don’t change with the times and continue to make the improvements our customers are asking for we won’t make it to the finish line. We implemented similar delivery services at our other businesses with great success so we knew we had to make this a top priority at our restaurant. I felt the same way about online ordering a few years ago and it has become a big part of our business which numerous customers use daily.” “I really enjoy working on projects and making improvements to the Whistle. Since purchasing the Whistle in 2015 we have implemented a long list of improvements that have either impacted our great and loyal customers or bettered our behind the scene

processes. We have tried to do this all while continuing to stay true to what the Whistle is and means to our community and county. I have a great team in place with restaurant manager Jessica Riffle (sister in law) and facility manager Daryl Riffle (father) but most importantly our restaurant staff. They handle the day to day operation responsibilities so I can put all my time and focus on my projects.” When asked what other projects are in the works Riffle smiled, “You will have to just wait and see.” The Whistle will also continue to offer delivery of breakfast and lunch to local
businesses and organizations if they are treating employees, having luncheons, or just for holiday parties and get togethers. You can call for more details. The Whistle Stop currently offers delivery Friday through Sundays from 4-9 p.m. via its online ordering portal at whistlebarandgrill. com. Delivery orders are currently not accepted over the phone at this time. As always, patrons can place pickup orders at the drive thru by calling or ordering online. Archaeology program GREENVILLE – It’s no secret that we live in a community filled with a rich history that shaped the future of our country. After the Treaty of Greene Ville was finalized, General “Mad Anthony” Wayne’s dispatches to the War Department related that he had revisited and fortified the Upper Piqua, Loramie, and St Marys posts with stockades. These outposts were garrisoned until the end of the War of 1812, when the U.S. government sold the properties off. Since September 2013, Greg Shipley has coordinated
an amateur archaeological project to locate where Ft. Loramie once stood. Darke County Parks are pleased to welcome Shipley on Nov. 7, 7 p.m., at Shawnee Prairie Preserve Nature Center. During this informative presentation, the discoveries of many interesting and historical locations and how the Wayne’s Legion Research Group has used metal detecting and ground-penetrating radar technologies will be discussed. Registration is required and there is a $2 fee per person.

Paul Mestemaker proudly stands beside the sign that honors his family’s 100th year of keeping property the property going. The Department of Agriculture presented him and wife Mary with the sign this year, as his parents bought in on April 19, 1919.
Mestemaker property earns notoriety NEW WESTON — Paul and Mary Mestemaker were awarded the Century Farm designation this year for having their rural property in the same family for 100 years. The award came from the Ohio Department of Agriculture, which recognizes the many social, economic and historic contributions made by Ohio’s founding farm families. Ohio’s Historic Family Farms program was developed as a way to honor these families for their enduring legacy to the state. The program grants three designations based on the number of years of same-family ownership… for 100, 150 and 200 years. Paul said his parents, Julius and Amelia (Dorsten) Mestemaker, purchased the farm, located at 4794 North Star-Fort Loramie Road, from Joe Hemmelgarn on April 19, 1919. “I was born and raised in the brick house on the next lot, and have been here all my life,” Paul said. “I will probably die here.” Paul, who had one brother and four sisters, all of whom are deceased, turned 88 on March 7 this year, and wife Mary will be 89 on Nov. 12. They raised their nine children here. Their children are David, Dennis, Dale, Donna Shaw, Chris, Randy, Lori Keller, Nancy Leugers and Jerry. There also are 22 grandchildren and, in a couple of months, the couple will have a total of 26 greatgrandchildren. Mary said all but one of the buildings originally on their farm property are gone. The only one remaining is a little chicken coop. The Mestemakers had a
home built in 1957, when he came home from the service. “We stayed with my mom and dad until we got the house built,” Mary said. “We were married with two children at the time,” Paul said. “The barn burned in on April 12, 1963, and we lost 12 heifers, eight sows and pigs and a bull,” said Mary, who saved some of the cows. The couple said their home has been the scene of a lot of get-togethers for this close-knit family. “There is always somebody coming in and out,” Mary said. “All are close except for Donna in Illinois and Dale in Georgia.” Paul had been a township trustee for 19 years, and then son Chris took over. Another son, Dennis, is a Wayne Township trustee. Paul also worked for 19 years at the Kaiser Fertilizer plant near Burkettsville to supplement the family income. Son Dennis farms their 120 acres, which today is only grain crops. “We always milked but not over 40 cows,” she said. “I milked in the morning and the boys did in the evening. We quit in 1992.” Daughter-in-law Charlene, Jerry’s wife, said, “It is amazing when you drive around the area, all the different designs on the signs (located at other Century Farms in the area) since everyone builds their own.” Mary said son Jerry was in charge of getting the signs, and a grandchild decorated it with LED lights so it would show up for all passersby to see. GREENVILLE — A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Monday morning at Tribute Funeral Home on North Broadway in Greenville for the new Blessing Box that has been installed on the northeast side of the parking lot. The box holds nonperishable food items for people in need. “Our message is,’Take what you need; leave what you can,’” said Wesley Lynch, pastor of the Radiant Church of Greenville, which initiated this project. Among those in attendance at the ribbon-cutting were Lynch and several members of his church; Casey Helmer of Reigning Cats and Dogs, which will sponsor the first box at Tribute by keeping the box filled; Dustin and Leslie Eisenbarger, representatives of Hydrojet Signs and Fabricating which made this box; Elvin Solomon of Journey Home in Winchester, Ind., which is also interested in obtaining a Blessing Box; and Dave Knapp, a supporter of the Radiant Church. Eric Fee, owner of trib-
ute Funeral Home, said there are plans to place 12 of these boxes around the county, including three in Greenville. Individuals or organizations are encouraged to adopt a Blessing Box and help keep it full. “We are honored and excited to partner with Radiant Church on this awesome movement,” said Fee. “Take what you need and leave what you can. It will remained unlocked.” He feels this will be successful because of the partnerships Radiant Church will make from this. “The purpose of the box is to bring local churches and organizations in the community together to provide for the need in the community,” Fee said. “I’m super excited,” said Lynch. “We want to illuminate darkness in Darke County.” Radiant Church, now meeting Saturday nights at the All Seasons Place on the Triumphant Christian Church campus off of Sebring-Warner Road just off of U.S. 127-South, will have a relaunch in January. Laura Turner of Radiant Church said HOPE is its mission outreach, with HOPE being an acronym for Helping Out People

Staugler, candidate for the fourth ward council seat, shared that he and his wife are vested in this community. He explained the birth of his daughter pushed him to want to make sure she had opportunities in Greenville. “I want to be sure that in 20 years when she graduates from college there are opportunities in this community,” he said. He believes he brings a voice to council that is not currently being heard. He feels he can help prepare the community for growth and welcome the next genera-

Rieman said he hopes to bring the perspective of getting young people involved and moving back to the community. “I’m hoping to bring some more long-term ideas that encourage people of my age and my generation to come back because it is a critical part in building that’s going to have place going forward for a long period of time.” A question regarding code enforcement was asked later in the meeting and Rieman said he would enforce Greenville’s current code. He added that if the community does not like the code they should ask council to change it. Contact Editor Ryan Berry at rberry@ aimmediamidwest.com or (937) 5690066. GREENVILLE – Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week is an observance in the United States that pays tribute to the local, state, and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty. National Police Week 2020 in the United States will begin on Sunday, May 10 and end on Saturday, May 16. The history of Peace Officers Day began in 1962. President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts

thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation’s Capital each year. A group of local law enforcement officers, business men and women and local citizens from Darke County have graciously given their time to create and plan a memorial law enforcement event in Darke County. This event will represent many communities around the region. The program will consist of speakers of fallen officers, music entertainment, local and regional law enforcement patrols, and a police light vigil. This type of memorial has never been done in the area and the committee believes citizens must show their appreciation every day for those men and women
who service and protect the communities we live in. The event will be free to the public. Performers secured for the 2020 event are Dave Bray and Brother Joe. The event will take place at Darke County Fairgrounds, Greenville on Saturday, May 16, 2020. Memorial Contributions can be sent to Back the Blue Memorial Ceremony, PO Box 741 Greenville Ohio 45331 or by contacting any member below through our email, backthebluememorialceremony@gmail.com or our Facebook Page. Committee members are Mike Dickmann, Jackie Messenger, Rick or Kathy Beam, Fred Shuff, Diane Shuff, Greg Zechar, Jodi Byers, John Kennedy, and Jamie Joseph.

GREENVILLE – In accordance with its mission of “Building healthy lives… together,” Family Health’s Behavioral Health and Wellness Center is hosting a program series titled, “Alternatives for Pain Management.” Speakers from Family Health and Wayne Healthcare, among many other community organizations will present programs and activities to enhance health and wellbeing from a whole person perspective. The Behavioral Health and Wellness center is excited to host Dr. Heather Pappas, PT, DPT, as she discusses Dry Needling. Dry needling involves use of needles which are very small in diameter and therefore flexible. The needles are inserted into the skin, often with minimal to no discomfort on insertion. Nothing is injected; the needle does the work by entering the muscle and releasing tight, shortened portions in order to return the tissue to its normal state. This also helps to improve communication with the brain and spinal cord, which restores the normal chemical make-up within the muscle. These changes assist in speeding up the healing process, relieving pain, restoring strength, and improving range of motion. Dry needling is different from traditional Chinese Acupuncture mostly due to the theories

Talent show and homecoming GREENVILLE – Veterans Memorial Park and Digital Library (VMPDL) keeps history alive by recording, storing, and reporting the oral histories, pictures, and memorabilia of veterans. Our mission chronicles the sacrifices of yesterday before they become forever lost to tomorrow. VMPDL will host its annual talent show fundraiser, The Phantom of the Opera Talent Show V, on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. There is free admission and the event is open to the public. They hope to showcase their mission’s progress and raise funds for continued success. Talent acts will compete for Best Overall Show with a $1,000 prize, Most Original Act with $500 prize and People’s Choice Award with $500 prize (chosen by online vote). Acts this year include singers, musical groups, a poet, and a comedy skit. Also, the VMPDL is leading the effort to give Senior Chief Petty Officer Kenton Stacy
the hero’s homecoming he deserves when he returns on Nov. 23 to his hometown of Greenville for the first time since his injuries. The caravan escorting SCPO Stacy to Greenville will follow on shortly after the Greenville Horse Parade and stop for a Homecoming Rally in front of the Greenville Courthouse building on the circle. Further, on Nov. 29, VFW Post 7262 Greenville will host a Homecoming Dinner for SCPO Stacy. Presale tickets to dine with SCPO Stacy and his family go on sale at the talent show Nov. 9, which is Alive Day for the wounded EOD operator. Presale only tickets thereafter may be purchased at the VFW until sold out. For more on our plans and our park’s history, visit them on Facebook or YouTube at Veterans Memorial Park and Digital Library. Tom Staley speaks to AWTHS ARCANUM – Tom Staley will be sharing stories Nov. 14, 7 p.m., at the Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society from the 30 years he has owned Staley’s Antiques and Woodworking located on Sycamore Street in Arcanum. Stepping into Staley’s Antique Store is like stepping back in time, like a treasure hunt in grandma’s attic or rummaging through the family storage unit. Staley has seen trends over the years in what people are collecting, the strange items that have come and gone through his store, and watched prices go up and down. He only recently learned that the rainbow colored robe he has had for a long time could be from the era of the Ku Klux Klan movement. He has some items from the general store, The John Smith Company, which had been in Arcanum for nearly 150 years. If you have an item you can’t identify, bring it to the program, maybe

Sheriff issues phone scam alert GREENVILLE – The Darke County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a telephone scam in the Darke County area today. This type of scam has been going on all around the country for some time and seems to be perpetrated in this area periodically. A similar scam occurred earlier this year. This particular telephone scam involves the perpetrator identifying himself as Deputy Linkous of the Darke County Sheriff’s Office to obtain money for failing to appear in court pursuant to a subpoena issued to the witness. In
cases such as these the suspect will utilize the name of someone from the local community. This is an attempt to legitimize the scam. The fictitious telephone number on the caller ID often shows up as a local number in an effort to lure unsuspecting victims. The caller will try to intimidate the victim into complying with the demands. They may try to solicit information to your account numbers or ask you to wire money. When the victim refuses to comply or questions the legitimacy of the call it is followed by threats of arrest.
The Darke County Sheriff’s Office does not operate this way. They do not call and attempt to obtain money for failure to show for jury duty or any other court processes such as outstanding citations or warrants. Deputies do commonly make phone calls to follow up on investigations and reports. A deputy will never ask you for money. If a person questions the validity of a deputy’s call, the caller will be asked to call back on our publically known telephone number (937) 5482020 and ask for the deputy who will then take the call.
Handmade Holiday
Sheriff Toby Spencer is warning citizens not to fall for this scam. In all situations, it is important that citizens do not verify or provide any personal information over the phone unless they positively know or trust the caller. Best course of action if you suspect you are receiving a scam call is to hang up immediately. Any citizens who have suffered a monetary loss or feel they have compromised their personal identifying information can contact the Darke County Sheriff’s Office at (937) 548-2020 or their local law enforcement agency.
BRADFORD – Bradford Public Library will be hosting its 2019 craft fair, A Handmade Holiday on Saturday, Nov. 2. Doors will open at 9 a.m. and will close at 3 p.m. the day of the sale. As the name suggests, all items will be hand-crafted. They have a great group of vendors offering unique items, sure to put a smile on everyone’s face. Items for sale will include pottery, handmade books, baked goods, oil infused soaps and scrubs, vinyl press items, wreaths and floral arrangements, jewelry, quilted, crocheted, knitted and sewn items, chocolates, candy and knives. More vendors are
being added every day to offer a little bit of something for everyone on your gift list. A raffle will be held for items donated by each of the vendors. Drawing will be held at 2:30 p.m. the day of the sale. You do not need to be present to win. Tickets are on sale now at the library for $1 each or six for $5. Proceeds from the raffle sales will go to our co-worker and friend, Carol Reed, to help with upcoming medical expenses as she battles ALS. Make plans to attend and support your local crafters, check off some names from your Christmas list and maybe even find something for yourself.
