GREENVILLE – Greenville City Council will wait another two weeks before a decision will be made on the proposed Wagner Avenue extension project. Council chose to table the resolution of necessity for assessments at its Tuesday meeting in order to give the board additional time to secure the six votes needed to pass the resolution. City council has been considering this project since June and has failed to act on what many speakers at Tuesday’s meeting called a “no brainer.” The project would widen Wagner Avenue from Lowe’s north to Childrens Home Bradford Road and make the properties in that area “shovel ready.” The property owners that abut Wagner Avenue would bear much of the cost of the project and would pay nearly threequarters of the estimated $1.9 million project. The city would be responsible for the cost that abuts its property at the retention pond. According to Greenville City Auditor Roxanne Willman, the city’s share is estimated at $400,000. The city would assess the property owners their

Road Hoggs help veterans

GREENVILLE – For the fifth consecutive year, local veterans will have a great Thanksgiving dinner thanks to the Road Hoggs Motorcycle Club and the Greenville VFW. On Sunday, members of the club collected food in front of the Greenville City Building. According to Matt Townsend, this year’s drive wasn’t there best, but they did well. They collected 10-12 turkeys, several hams and Coopers donated about 50 pounds of meat. The group also collected cash that will be turned into gift cards. In a few weeks, the Road Hoggs will be on the traffic circle collecting toys that will be given to the Community Action Partnership for distribution. This will be 36th year for the toy drive.

Share Your Bounty With Family As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s meaningful to reflect on the origin of the holiday –Native Americans and pilgrims sharing their bounty of food with each other. As you gather with your loved ones this year, perhaps you can think of ways to share not only your dinner, but also your financial bounty. In terms of bounty-sharing, here are some suggestions you may find helpful, no matter your age or that of your children: • Make appropriate gifts. If you have young children, you may want to get them started with a savings account to help them develop positive financial habits. You could even make it a Thanksgiving tradition to measure how their accounts have grown from year to year. But you can go even further by starting to fund an education savings vehicle such as a 529 plan. This account can provide valuable tax benefits and gives you total control of the money until your children are ready for college or trade school. Other education-funding options also are available, such as a custodial account, commonly known as an UGMA or UTMA. If you have grown children, you could still contribute to a 529 plan for your grandchildren. • Develop – and communicate – your estate plans. While you may want to be as generous as possible to your loved ones during your lifetime, you may desire to leave something behind as part of your legacy. And that means you will need to develop a comprehensive estate plan. Such a plan will allow you to express your wishes about where you want your assets to go, who will take care of your children if something happens to you, how you want to be treated

should you become incapacitated, and other important issues. Your estate plan will need to include the appropriate documents and arrangements – last will and testament, living trust, power of attorney, health care directive, and so on. To create such a plan, you may need to work with a team of professionals, including your financial, tax and legal advisors. And it’s essential that you communicate the existence and details of your estate plan to your loved ones. By doing so, you can help them know what to expect and what’s expected of them to help avoid unpleasant surprises and familial squabbles when it’s time to settle your estate. • Solicit suggestions for charitable giving. Sharing some of what you have with charitable or community organizations will also help fulfill the spirt of Thanksgiving. And you can make it a family affair by asking your loved ones which groups they would like to support. Not only will you be helping a worthy cause, but you’ll also be teaching your children about the value of money – in this case, the ability to use money you’ve saved to help make a positive contribution to society. By sharing your bounty with your loved ones and your community on Thanksgiving, you’ll help create a more memorable holiday for everyone. So, be generous, be creative – and be prepared for how much satisfaction you can get from your actions. You should consult your estate-planning attorney or qualified tax advisor regarding your situation.

ESCC hosts RN to BSN PIQUA – Edison State Community College is hosting a Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Information Fair on Friday, Nov. 15, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in rooms 504/505 at the Piqua Campus. Current nursing students and practicing nurses are invited to learn about the opportunities available to them in pursuing a baccalaureate degree. Representatives from 14 universities will be available to share information about

their completion programs and to guide interested nurses toward their next steps for enrollment. This event gives prospective students the ability to obtain information about many programs in one visit. The faculty and administration at Edison State work collaboratively with all of the represented universities to provide for a smooth pathway to the BSN degree. Edison State encourages graduates of the nursing program to plan for their

future educational and career goals, and this is an excellent opportunity to do so. Nursing students currently in the capstone class will graduate in December and applications are being accepted now through January 31 for students interested in beginning Edison State’s nursing program in August 2020. Doing a disservice to taxpayers By Ryan Berry

DarkeCountyMedia.com

I’m not sure what I’m missing and keep scratching my head trying to figure it out. The City of Greenville has an excellent opportunity to get a lot of road work done for a fraction of the price, but two councilmen are about to jeopardize a golden opportunity. How do you say no to $1.9 million worth of road improvements, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, lighting on Wagner Avenue and only pay $400,000? How do you turn down a ZERO interest loan? Apparently you can say no when you say you’re doing it for the kids and future generations. We evidently don’t want them paying approximately $67,000 a year over a sixyear period beginning in 24 years to produce shovel ready sites now, which has the capability of producing enough revenue from the city’s income tax to pay for the project many times over. As it stands, the city gets practically nothing in revenue for that barren land in the northern part of the city. If you are looking out for our future generations, increase the value of the land and I’m sure the school district would appreciate the extra revenue to help educate future generations. Here’s my problem with saying you don’t want the future generation to pay for it, which Councilmen John Hensley and Clarence Godwin have basically stated. Godwin also said he was concerned that we won’t know what the economy and budget are like in 24 years. When you don’t offer shovel ready sites and another community does, where does common sense tell you that business is going to go? Because of two councilmen, the city could miss out on an opportunity to better secure Greenville’s future economy. Where does most of Greenville’s income come from? The answer is income tax. Where do income taxes come from? That’s right, people who have an income. You need businesses hiring a workforce and you need people living and working in your community in order to receive an income tax. Both of these councilmen have also been hesitant when it comes to assessing property owners for sidewalks. Hensley suggested putting the issue on the ballot. He has already admitted his sidewalks will need to be repaired. Basically, he wants the taxpayers that he says he is concerned about to pay for the sidewalk repairs to his property. In November 2017, these two councilmen had no problem approving a bond for more than $800,000 to pay for equipment in the 9-1-1 dispatch center. A bond is basically a loan, with interest, that future taxpayers will pay. This project has the support of the Darke County Economic Development. That office has helped local companies grow and Darke County has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state at 3.8 percent. That office has said numerous times that Darke County needs shovel ready sites to attract commercial, light industrial, and housing developments in order to compete with other communities. Greenville is blessed with a very fiscally conservative auditor and she has given this project her blessing. She explained that council had already approved and spent over $92,000 on engineering for the project. “And all, 100 percent of the council members voted to move forward with this project at that time and spend those dollars. At this point, not voting for this project is simply a waste of taxpayer money,” she said. It has been suggested that personalities have come into play with those opposed to this project. Maybe there is something to that, even if it’s only in their subconscious. A millennial owns one of the properties in that area. These two council members have led the charge against almost every idea brought to council by a person of that generation. The following projects were brought to council by a millennial and were stalled or opposed by one or both of these councilmen - bicycle racks, visitors bureau kiosks, wall murals, and stamped concrete in downtown Greenville, which has a connection to outdoor dining, and I’m sure I’m missing a few. All of these are ideas that break through the “We’ve never done it like that before” mindset. I think we can be progressive while still being fiscally conservative. Are we really looking out for future taxpayers by not doing this project now? We won’t be saving them money in the future if we pass on this opportunity. If by some chance the property is developed without council’s support and 25 years from now the city decides it’s time to expand their portion of Wagner Avenue, do you really think they are going to get the project done for $400,000? My guess is it will be 20, 30 or maybe 50 percent more – at least $450,000 and maybe more than $600,000. Mr. Hensley and Mr. Godwin, you will be doing a disservice to the taxpayers you say you are trying to protect. Contact Editor Ryan Berry at rberry@aimmediamidwest.com or (937) 5690066. Versailles falls to CHCA KETTERING – The Versailles Lady Tigers dropped a Saturday afternoon OHSAA D-III regional tournament match to the NO. 1 seed Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy 3-1, a private school represented by more than 40 school districts across the region. “Every game you’re going to have a winner and a loser,” said Versailles coach Kenzie Bruggeman. “You take that risk when you put on the uniform when you step out in an environment like this. Unfortunately we were on the losing side of it.”

The Lady Tigers finish the season playing in the Elite 8 following back-to-back state championship seasons. He got back into it and I joined him. We were in a 1,500 square foot building, had tons of catalogues, samples, did everything on paper and now 26-years later we are a corporation, we have our main corporate office in Louisville, KY. My brother has taken over the company and it is just amazing how it has evolved.” “In the last four years I decided that I would like to get back into the business after a stint and working for non-profits and being a stay at home mom. I thought it would allow me more time with my coaching and my kids so I started it in my basement. After a year and a half I started to take over the basement so my husband and I found this building here on Warren Street in Versailles. We purchased it and things have been growing ever since.”

Coach Custenborder is pleased to have coached under Versailles head girls basketball coach Jacki Stonebraker and is as well excited for her new position with the school system. “I am very excited for Jacki,” stated Custenborder. “I am excited for her but I am more excited for our community because she is doing a wonderful job. Those things I talked about, time management, etc. she has taken those things right from the court into the school building, using that with her teachers and her students and I am already hearing wonderful things about her. Jacki is all in and it is what they are going to get from her.” “Jacki was the type of coach that we were a team,” she added. “She was not a dictator. She would listen to what you had to say. She would funnel it and then do what she thought was best for the team, but she always encouraged her staff to give opinions and do things so it was always a situation where we could always work as a team.” “My husband, Pat took on the role Mr. Dad during basketball season because I was rarely home,” she said. “I missed a lot of my kid’s stuff, I missed their junior high games but my kids understood that and my husband was right there with them, there was always someone there with them to watch them play. They worked hard. They were gym rats from when they were little and I just appreciate them being supportive of mom and letting me do that because it’s not always easy being the coach’s kid. “Sometime coaching your own daughter was not fun because you were put under a microscope,” added Custenborder. “I had to be very careful about the way I handled her. I didn’t treat her any differently than I did any other girls. She probably was treated a little bit harder and she probably felt the pressure a little bit more to have to perform, but I think she handled it really well and turned out ok.”

With the exit of one Coach Custonborder, another Coach Custenborder will make his Versailles coaching debut. “Super excited that Connor has joined the Lady Tiger coaching staff,” said Kim, Connor’s mother. “They were in need of a seventh grade coach where I started out at the junior high level. Tracy (White) asked me if I knew of anybody and I said I know a guy who is passionate about the game, loves that game and has a ton of knowledge about it so she contacted Connor and Connor is now the seventh grade coach. He is pretty excited about that.” “I will miss it, I will miss it tremendously but I am also going to enjoy my time traveling back and for to Louisville and having extra time at the holidays and when Kelsey calls and needs something up at Heidelberg I can run and take it to her,” Custenborder concluded. not. He loved clowns and his Clown Club. He loved to eat, especially hamburgers and Fiske fries from the Great Darke County Fair, which was another love of Alan’s. He truly would have lived at the fairgrounds if he would have had his choice in the matter. He loved going to the fair and seeing the fire and rescue personnel. He also enjoyed wearing his Hurd’s Towing and Tiger 97.5 t-shirts with pride. Some may have looked at Alan and seen a handicapped person. He was, actually, blessed as someone who loved his life and lived it to the fullest. He was uninhibited. He knew what was important in life: people and relationships. He loved unconditionally. He knew what it was to love and not expect anything in return. If you were fortunate enough to get a smile from Alan in your lifetime, you were truly blessed. His only survivors are numerous cousins and he will sadly missed by his best friend Bobby Runner and Travis, Kelly and Lexi Fliehman. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019 in the St. John Lutheran Church, 7418 State Route 121-North, Greenville, with Pastor Peter Menke officiating. Burial will follow in the St. John Church Cemetery across the road from the church. There will be a reception of family and friends on Saturday one hour prior to the services in the church. Memorial Contributions may be given to the St. John Lutheran Church of Greenville Condolences for the family may be sent to www. zecharbailey.com. Alan D. Flag is a surprise for Brodrick GREENVILLE — Betty (Lease) Brodrick was honored to receive via U.S. mail an American flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 9 this year. Now, she not only has the flag in her possession but also has a keepsake Certificate of Authenticity signed by the architect of the Capitol. The flag was flown that day in honor of her 71st wedding anniversary with her husband, Robert, who died in 2000. To Brodrick’s surprise, her daughters — Deborah Shuff of Greenville, Marceena Hamilton of Tennessee and Roberta Ditty of Greenville — made the honor extra special. Betty said it was spearheaded by Marceena and said she will treasure and encase her items and proudly display them beside the flag she received from the Army National Guard in gratitude for her husband’s service to the country when he passed away. “The girls got their heads together last summer, and then a week before I received the flag, they told me I was going to get another one,” she said. “The flags are stored in the basement of the Capitol, and the girls emailed their request. You have to submit an application to a senator or representative. They mailed it to Sen. Rob Portman at https://www.portman. senate.gov/service/flagsrequests.” The Brodricks were married in 1948 in Arcanum at the EUM Church. They resided in Greenville all but one year of their marriage, when he transferred to Glendale, Calif., to help with the new Sheffield Western Branch of Precision Toolmaking Measurement Instruments. Betty, who was born May 11, 1930, has an interest in preserving history and music as well as her family. In addition to her

daughters, she has three sons-in-law, John Shuff, Randy Hamilton and Michael Ditty; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Betty is a member of Daughters of the American Revolution Fort Greenville Chapter. Thus, it was honorable that this flag flew so close to the DAR National Headquarters Complex in Washington, D.C. Yes, she is keeping the flag, box and all and even the envelope that the Certificate of Authenticity came in. “It’s a commercial grade flag and it has a holder, too,” she said. Brodrick said she was an operator for Ohio Telephone Service for 10 years, had worked at Goodyear and at Wayne Hospital, having worked as a nurse’s aide for seven years and as a unit clerk for more than 24 years. She and her husband met at the portable skating rink across from the Maid-Rite in 1947. “He farmed for his father and came to the skating rink,” she recalled. “It was my day off on Sunday, and he came to skate. A couple’s skate came up, and he took my hand. He took me home, and came back two weeks later, and we went to the Hamburger Shop and it started off.”

Housing and workforce is the focus GREENVILLE – Partnering for Progress (P4P) celebrated its 10th anniversary on Wednesday at the P4P Fall Mixer held at the Bistro Off Broadway. A large contingent of local business and manufacturing leaders joined with local government and education leaders to learn about the economic development progress made in Darke County over the past decade. “When this first started, we were talking about the importance of manufacturing and getting more companies into the county and that was the focus,” said Mike Bowers, director of Darke County Economic Development. “And then it became a workforce piece,” he said. The transition to developing a workforce has allowed his office to employ a workforce specialist and they’ve worked to ensure local businesses will have a pool of employees to choose from. Tamala Marley, workforce specialist, shared the numerous programs her office has put together for high school students to highlight the career opportunities found close to home, including the senior Inspire Career Concert, junior job shadowing, sophomore manufacturer tours and regular superintendent and manufacturing meetings. Bowers stressed the need for housing in Darke County.

Darke County Economic Development Director Mike Bowers presented Phillip Pierri, of YOLO, with a certificate of recognition.

“Housing can be obstacle to that growth,” he said. Versailles has taken it head on. They have two subdivisions moving forward.” He further stated Greenville has some opportunities as does Arcanum, Ansonia, and New Madison. Bowers is working with Greenville to do something with the old Marsh building and “how that could move things forward with housing, not for just Greenville, but for Darke County,” he said. Another area of that county that has witnessed several projects this year

is Osgood. “The Village of Osgood, with just 300 folks, had five projects moving forward this year. We’ve gotten through three of the five projects and now they’re looking at seeing how they can build a small industrial park and increase their housing stock,” said Bowers. He explained businesses fight for employees and Darke County is in competition with other communities to get a workforce. “We need families to move to our areas,” he said. The need is great, especially with Midmark’s $46

million investment in the technology center. “We need housing and we need opportunities to bring in the 110 employees,” Bowers added. Quality of life and amenities offered by a community are important to attracting families. “We are very fortunate in Darke County because there is a group of folks that epitomizes that quality of life portion. You look at what YOLO has done for Greenville and Versailles. The amphitheater in Heritage Park has been a great addition. You look at an urban park that is part of the downtown landscape of Greenville. Those are just great quality of life additives that we get the benefit of,” Bowers said. Bowers presented Phillip Pierri of YOLO with a certificate of recognition. Bowers said, “That next generation is very important to how this county grows and thrives.” Pierri shared that YOLO completed two projects this past year, amphitheater and urban park, which invested $1.3 million in Darke County. “We do that and are able to do that because of most of you in this room. The generosity of this community and how they’ve come together to support our organization and what we want to do for the community…we are very blessed.” Contact Editor Ryan Berry at rberry@ aimmediamidwest.com or (937) 5690066. Get your elves in a row challenge Bestseller coming to campus

PIQUA – Edison State Community College will welcome New York Times bestselling author Kelsey Timmerman on Nov. 20, at noon in the Robinson Theater, to discuss his book, Where am I Giving? The event, which is open to the community, is offered free charge thanks to funding from Awesome Piqua. A Darke County native, Timmerman is the author of three books. In his first book, “Where am I Wearing? Timmerman provides a global tour to the countries, factories, and people that make our clothes. His second book, “Where am I Eating? takes readers on an adventure through the global food chain. In his latest book, Where Am I Giving?, the New York Times bestselling author embarks on an adventure that challenges himself and readers to move beyond awareness to action and to take advantage of the opportunities each of us has to make a difference. Timmerman travels to Myanmar, Kenya, India, Nepal, Zambia, and beyond to explore different ways of giving—as a worker, consumer, volunteer, philanthropist, local, and global citizen—and also the benefits and effectiveness of these methods. He learns from folks such as Tibetan monks, Gandhi’s great-grandson, a refugee, gang members turned peace activists, and a former Hollywood executive. Timmerman discovers how they give, and meets the people on the receiving end of their giving. In doing so, he puts readers face-to-face with globalization and the interconnectedness of all of our lives. An acclaimed public speaker, Timmerman, has lectured on travel and globalization around the world. He is particularly passionate about educating students through humor and storytelling and encourages them to think globally and act locally. To underscore the importance of giving locally, Edison State is inviting local nonprofit organizations to participate in a nonprofit expo for attendees to learn that where they give is closer than they may think. Nonprofit organizations interested in joining the expo are asked to email Julie Slattery at jslattery@edisonohio.edu or Rick Hanes at rhanes@ edisonohio.edu. This speaking engagement is sponsored by funding from Awesome Piqua, who donates $1,000 per month, no strings attached, for an event or project that will help make Piqua be a better community and bring smiles and delight to its citizens.

Velveteen Rabbit opens 2019/2020 Family Theatre Series GREENVILLE – Darke County Center for the Arts will open its 20192020 Family Theatre Series season with Virginia Repertory Children’s Theatre’s adaptation of The Velveteen Rabbit on Sunday, November 17 at Henry St. Clair Memorial Hall in Greenville. Based upon the beloved story by Margery Williams illustrating the power and magic of unconditional love, the fanciful musical production takes the stage at 2 p.m. “Children of all ages will be charmed by this enchanting produc-

tion,” said DCCA Artistic Director David Warner. “The Velveteen Rabbit has been a favorite of youngsters and their families since it was first published in 1922, and has never become outdated; we are excited to bring the live theatre version of this lovely story to our community,” Warner stated. The Velveteen Rabbit opens with a boy discovering a velveteen rabbit in his Christmas stocking and goes on to chronicle

the child’s growing love for his sawdust-filled toy. “While this show is not filled with action, children become captivated with the characters and the puppets, and can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next,” Mr. Warner commented. Running time for all Family Theatre Series shows is about one hour; other FTS presentations are Lightwire Theatre’s electro-luminescent Dino-Light on Sunday, January 19, and Llama Llama Live! from
