Local athletes bring home gold Grennan “The Green Monster” Bartlett-Nealeigh performs knife throwing act at Wayne Lakes private party. (Clinton Randall Photo)
Boy with local ties appears on national television show BY CLINTON RANDALL STAFF WRITER www.bluebagmedia.com DARKE COUNTY – Son of former Greenville resident, Thomas Nealeigh, performed his unique talent of knife throwing June 22 on national television. Grennan BartlettNealeigh, a 9-year-old from Dayton, flew to California in April to record his performance on the popular show America’s Got Talent (AGT). He was selected after his father, president and entertainer with the carnival-style sideshow company The FreakShow Deluxe, sent in an audition tape of the youngster performing. All four celebrity judges gave him a ‘YES’ vote. Grennan will now move on to the second round of the competition in New York and one-step closer to the million dollar grand prize. Grennan, whose stage name is the ‘Green Monster’, told The Early Bird his favorite part about being on national television was getting to be on the stage in front of 3,000 people watching and especially meeting Nick Cannon the host. In addition to knife throwing, which Grennan has been practicing for over two years, also performs a danger-
ous act of laying on a bed of nails. In 2012 he performed the act on Figure It Out, a show on the popular kids network Nickelodeon. When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, Grennan said to be a sideshow performer just like his dad. Thomas said Grennan has traveled nationwide with the FreakShow since he was a baby. He and his wife gave Grennan the nickname ‘Green Monster’ when he was born and even themed his roof around the name. Besides national television spotlight, Grennan and his 6-year-old sister Charlotte ‘Little Spider’ performed at a local birthday and graduation party in Wayne Lakes one day before the AGT show aired. “Performing alongside his father, Grennan even gave us a sneak preview of the performance to be aired on America’s Got Talent the following day,” said Stephanie Sander-Green. “Thomas and I became friends in high school and I have always been intrigued by his talent. Thomas performs a variety of sideshow acts and is best known for his fire breathing performance that lights up the

BY RYAN BERRY MANAGING EDITOR www.bluebagmedia.com DARKE COUNTY – Cindy Rose, volunteer coordinator for Darke County Special Olympics, described it as a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for three Darke County athletes. Nick Meade, Devin Billenstein and Derrick Hemmelgarn were given an opportunity to represent Ohio at the Special Olympics 2014 U.S.A. Games in New Jersey. The three softball players joined 12 other teammates from around the state to earn the gold medal for Team Ohio by defeating Team New Jersey in the championship game. According to Rose, Team Ohio played three pool games to determine their division. They performed well enough to be placed in the top division. Although they were there to play softball, Meade, Billenstein and Hemmelgarn took more than a gold medal away from the games. The trio was able to develop friendships with other players from Ohio, and create memories with their friends and family. Rose attended the previous national games in Nebraska four years ago, but admitted there was much more for the athletes at this year’s games. From the opening ceremonies at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ complete with fireworks and the traditional torch ceremony to the closing ceremonies, the athletes
were treated like celebrities during the week-long event by thousands of volunteers. All of Darke County’s athletes were given an opportunity to take a boat tour around the Statue of Liberty or enjoy activities in the exclusive Special Olympics Town. The town was not open to the public and all rides and activities were geared specifically to the athletes. Although thrilled to send three athletes to the U.S.A. games to play softball, Rose admits she would like to send athletes in other sports to the games. In addition to softball, athletes competed in aquatics, athletics, basketball, Bocce, bowling, cycling, golf, gymnastics, power lifting, soccer, tennis and volleyball. Some of the athletes attending the games competed in one of three exhibition sports – baseball, flag football and triathlon. While many recognize Special Olympics for the track and field games held annually in May at Harmon Field in Greenville, Rose pointed out there is much more to the Darke County Special Olympics program. The county has had championship teams in softball and basketball and has participants in aquatics and equine events. She would also like to reenergize the bowling teams in Darke County. The adult league has sent competitors to the state competition and she is hoping

to start a youth league soon. Rose would also like to expand the number of unified sports in the county. A unified sport is when a Special Olympics athlete is teamed up with a non-Special Olympics athlete. Darke County currently has a unified golf team, but Rose would eventually like to add a unified softball team. Darke County Special Olympics has been fortunate since its very inception to have a com-
munity stand behind the program and its athletes. Donors and volunteers have made it an exceptional program. When the three athletes were chosen to go the U.S.A. Games she was quickly able to raise most of the fees needed to send the participants. Without the donations the athletes would not have been able to participate. Only a small portion of the fees came from the Darke County Special Olympics budget.
Traffic laws enforced in Castine’s construction zone CASTINE – The Darke County Sheriff’s Office wishes to inform citizens that U.S. Route 127 in the Village of Castine is closed due to a construction project that is expected to take approximately 90 days. Road Closed signs have been erected and are clearly established at the north and south village limits. U.S. Route 127 is considered closed
in the Village of Castine. The only vehicles permitted to travel are those that live in the Village or have legitimate business there; all other through traffic is prohibited. Detour signs have been placed at State Route 503 to the north and U.S. Route 40 to the south. The recommended detour is U.S. Route 40 east of U.S. Route 127 and State

Route 503. Truck traffic is not permitted on the county and township roads north and south of Castine due to the fact that they cannot accommodate large semis and commercial trucks at the rural intersections. Since the closure began last week the Darke County Sheriff’s Office has responded to several semi trucks on Davidson Road that have
slipped off the roadway and nearly tipped over. Deputies have been tied up for hours while the commercial trucks had to be assisted by large tow trucks back on to the roads. The Sheriff’s Office has also received complaints from citizens in the Village of Castine that non local traffic and commercial trucks have been moving the barricades and travelling
through the construction zone despite the closure. The non essential traffic causes disruption to the construction project and delays progress in the work. It is also an unnecessary safety hazard to construction workers in the work zone. It is a violation of Ohio traffic laws to travel on closed roadways, disobey traffic signs or traffic control devic-
es. As a result of these ongoing issues Darke County Deputies will be enforcing these laws. Traffic citations will be issued to any unauthorized vehicles traveling on closed roads in the Castine area until this project is completed. The Sheriff and the Village of Castine appreciate the motoring public’s patience as this project progresses.

On June 17 police, fire and rescue were dispatched to 724 Hiddeson Ave. regarding a structure fire. A detached outbuilding about 50 feet behind the residence was fully engulfed in flames. Officers evacuated the residence and neighboring houses. The owner of the residence, Georgeanna Bailey, said she had been in the detached building the night before and locked the door when she left. Bailey’s daughter and grandsons said they did not see anything suspicious. The fire is suspicious as, according to the fire department, it appeared to have been started from the inside of the building. Further investigation is required. His speech was slow and appeared to be slurred; his eyes had a glassy appearance. He had difficulty providing the officer with the requested driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance. During a field sobriety test, upon which he did poorly, a half of an orange tablet fell out of his pants leg. Prescott allegedly said it was morphine. A search of the vehicle revealed a small white cigarette that had a burnt leafy substance inside of it accessible to the passenger in the vehicle, Keith Davis. Both were taken to Greenville Police. Davis was cited for Marijuana Drug Paraphernalia and released. Prescott passed the breath test but refused a urinalysis. He was placed under Administrative License Suspension (ALS). Since he was from out of state he was transported to Darke County jail on $4,025 bond. On June 19 police observed a defendant (unnamed in the report) approach a flashing red stop light and fail to stop at the intersection. Prior to the
GETTING IT RIGHT GREENVILLE – In the June 22 edition of The Early Bird incorrect information was given to The Early Bird regarding the number of equine therapy facilities in the area (Students find countless benefits through equine therapy). The Early Bird is pleased to note Darke County has a facility near Versailles. Horses & Humans, Helping Each Other has been in existence since 2006 and has a stable of four horses and has had over 100 volunteers. They are part of PATH International (the world-wide organization that certifies instructors and accredits centers). The Early Bird apologizes for this error.
officer stopping him the defendant also failed to stop at another flashing red light. The defendant stated he’d had two beers. His speech was slurred, there was a strong odor of alcoholic beverage and his eyes appeared glassy. An empty beer can was in the rear bed of his truck. The officer asked the defendant to perform a field sobriety test several times; the request was refused. When the defendant was asked to walk to the police cruiser he was stiff legged and his movement was unbalanced and staggering. He was arrested for OVI and transported to the Police Department for a breath test. He refused the test. He was cited, placed under ALS and released to a friend. He was already under Financial Responsibility Suspension and had two prior OVI convictions in the previous six years, with four OVI convictions in the previous 20 years. SUICIDE ATTEMPT On June 4 police were dispatched to Wayne Hospital regarding an individual who had walked into the emergency room with a laceration to the left arm that was bleeding heavily. A blood trail was followed down to Martz Street behind a medical office where a razor blade was found. The injured person said he did it because he was feeling suicidal. He couldn’t see his two children, he lost his job and his mother is ill. No criminal charges will be filed. WARRANTS On June 13 police arrested Todd Stevens on a Bench Warrant through the city of Greenville. The original charge was Criminal Trespass and Theft. He was transported to the Darke County jail. On June 19 police arrested James Hamilton on a Bench Warrant for failure to appear on a Larceny charge. It was issued through Miami County. Hamilton was transported to the Miami County line where he was picked up by the Piqua Police Department.

On June 17 police arrested Jason Ray Ullery on a warrant out of Wayne County, Ind. The original charge was two counts of Forgery. He was transported to the Darke County jail. On June 17 police arrested Phillip Whalen on a Greenville warrant. The charge was failing to appear on a probation revocation for an original charge of Underage Consumption. He was transported to Darke County jail. DOMESTIC On June 22 police were dispatched regarding an assault in which Joe Smith attacked his victim, allegedly hitting him in the right side of his face. The victim indicated family issues concerning a child and his wife may have caused the incident. Police determined Smith was convicted of Domestic Violence in 2003 which makes this charge a felony of the 4th degree. He will be arrested when found. FIGHT On June 22 police were dispatched to 848 Gray Ave. regarding a fight complaint. Paul Fellers, son Logan and Greg Sleppy pulled into the address to pick up tools. Jerry Mills approached Paul telling him to pay him for work done. Paul tried to explain the checks were made out to Greg and he wouldn’t be able to cash them until the next day. Mills was leaving the state in the morning and wanted payment before then. He allegedly punched Paul repeatedly on the head. At some point Paul took a pitch fork and shovel from the truck to keep Mills away from him, then later returned them. Paul had minor scratches on his face and said he had lumps on his head. Greenville Rescue was called but he refused treatment or transport. Mills said Paul owes him money, adding Paul then got in his face and threatened him. He couldn’t remember specifics, saying he “lost it” and blacked out. He complained his arm hurt and was swelling. The officer was unable to see any visible signs of injury. Greenville Rescue checked him out and he refused transport. Mills was issued a citation for Assault. Mills and Paul Fellers were told to stay away from each other. EARLY BIRD POLICY The Greenville Police Beat is prepared from public records available at the Greenville Police Department. Bradford Library continues program BRADFORD – Bradford Public Library is in full swing for this year’s “Fizz, Boom…Read” Summer Reading Program. All of their staff have planned a variety of fun-filled activities, based on appropriate age level in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. During the past three weeks, over 150 children, ages 3-16, have participated in events like “Naked Eggs,” “Movie Mondays,” “Kids Can Sew,” “Brush Bots – Building & Racing,” “Lego Cars & Races,” “Storytime,” and the Big Event Day for their younger patrons. The children who attended made a variety of science inspired things like Scanimation pages, lava lamps, sinking and floating and pop-up books. In addition, John DeBoer, from the Miami County Park District, took the children on a Storybook Trail, which is part of their integration of nature and the outdoors with the Summer Reading Clubs. The Teen Advisory Group has been wonderful in assisting the
Staff Librarians and other volunteers in implementing these programs: Brock Barga, Justin Bryan, Shane Bryan, Olivia Daugherty, Erica Gaynor, Carolyn Gleason, Logan Harrison, Joseph Henry, Katherine Lantz, Clay Layman, Chris Lockhart, Athena Scalzi and Brooke Turner. It helps the staff when students can sign-up in advance of their chosen activities. Here is what’s in place for the next couple of weeks: Movie Mondays & Bingo, Kids Can Sew, Teens Tabletop Angry Birds, the making of Fake Snot for our kids in grades 3-5 and the Teens Nail Balancing Challenge! These activities are only a small part of their Summer Reading Challenge for preschool parents through their eldest adults! Reading and comprehending what one reads is a big part of our daily lives and the Staff Librarians encourage everyone to take part in promoting this Life Skill. ON YOUR MIND
Cracking down on tainted food imports When American consumers go to the store, t h e y should SHERROD be able to BROWN feel confiU.S. SENATOR dent that the food they’re purchasing is safe. Unfortunately, questions have recently emerged about whether food imported from China has been the cause of animal illness and death across the United States, and whether this threat could affect humans. To address these concerns, I chaired a Congressional hearing last week to explore China’s food safety standards on behalf of American consumers, pet owners, and farmers. Since 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been aware of the deaths and illnesses of thousands of pets but the cause remains unknown. In May, the FDA said that reports of these illnesses had risen to include 5,600 pets and 1000 dog deaths. It has been suggested that these illnesses are linked to pet treats from China. In response, both Petco and PetSmart announced they would stop selling dog and cat treats made in China, a decision which I applauded. Pets are like family members to many owners and more must be done to ensure their food isn’t tainted. Researchers have also explored a link between animal feed from China and Porcine epidemic
diarrhea virus (PEDv), a deadly disease that has wiped out 10 percent of our nation’s hog population. Causing further concern, last year, the USDA declared that China can export, processed, cooked chicken to the United States. This makes it possible for chicken that’s labeled as being from the United States to have been sourced in the U.S., but shipped to China for processing, before being sold back to American consumers. Clearer origin labels for food are needed so that consumers can decide for themselves whether to purchase a product. To protect the health of Ohioans and our pets and livestock, I am introducing an amendment to an upcoming agriculture bill to ask the FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to update Congress on investigations into Chinese food processing facilities and their work to secure work visas for American food inspectors. Having American inspectors on the ground in foreign food facilities looking to export to the U.S. helps ensure that manufacturers are taking proper food safety measures. Consumers deserve the peace of mind of knowing that the food they’ve purchased won’t cause illness or death. We must hold China and other nations to a higher standard of food safety in order to protect the health of our pets and ourselves.
Elevating the issue of Common Core It was just over a year ago, when my office began receiving calls from JIM BUCHY constituOHIO ents in REPRESENTATIVE western Ohio concerned about the Common Core Standards. At that time I knew that the schools were implementing new standards and they had been for some time but I had a lot to learn about how this effort was really an attempt to nationalize public education. A lot has come out since that time and recently Senator Faber led the way in elevating the discussion of the common core to a state level issue. Many state leaders remain unaware of the costs of common core both in hard money and dignity. Ohio should run our own education system and the local school boards should have control over curriculum and teaching in each of our schools. For those leaders who haven’t been able to comprehend the threat of the Common Core—now is our opportunity to share the information that we have learned. In House Bill 487, which the Governor signed recently, there will be four standards review committees with experts, parents and teachers that will advise the Ohio Department of Education on Ohio’s Academic Content Standards. The committees provide a platform to educate the leaders that are not yet aware of the threat of common core. In addition to other advancements in protecting Ohio’s children from the Common Core, the bill also requires each
Ohio school to establish a parental review committee or other method of input. This will give parents a say in the curriculum at the school and give them the assurance that local curriculum matches the values of the community. HB 487 touched on several different areas to protect Ohio’s children from any unintended effects of the Common Core and elevates the discussion from the grassroots level to a state level issue. There is still a lot of work to be done but Governor Kasich and the Ohio legislature have signified a commitment to further addressing the concerns related with the common core academic content standards. While the amendments in HB 487 provide a temporary stop gap to the unintended consequences I am working with other legislators to advance the passage of House Bill 237 which would repeal the Common Core in its entirety. At this time HB 237 is stuck in the House Education Committee. I joined with some of my colleagues in signing a discharge petition. If we can get 50 signatures it will bring the bill to the floor for an up or down vote. Thanks to the hard work of persons in our communities this issue has become a state level issue, and it needs our attention. In west central Ohio we have the best schools in the state. Increasing parental involvement and keeping the Common Core out will ensure that it stays that way. Please give me your opinion on this topic and others in the news this month by completing an online survey at tinyurl. com/buchyjune2014.
He brought it on himself Grumpy Side of 60 by Bob Robinson Associate Editor
My day sometimes starts with college students, then by end of day travels the range of students from a recent high school graduate to two 5-year-olds who will be going into kindergarten in the fall. I try to get college kids to think ‘critically’ and the 5-year-olds to print their names and count to 10. Sometimes it’s easier to teach a child to draw the letter C, or O or H than it is to explain to an adult critical thinking sometimes has to replace the company rulebook. At the same time, it’s often easier to cross my fingers hoping no one passes out the first time they stand up in front of the class and introduce themselves than it is to keep the attention of a little one who decided five minutes into a tutoring session she’s worked enough for one day. Then, more often
than not, I’m off to an assignment where I have to switch from kindergarten mode to adult mode and ask halfway intelligent questions about an event I’m covering. The day I walk into an elected official’s office, for instance, and without thinking, ask if she studied her letters last week or if he needs to go to the bathroom or get a drink before we get started… that’s the day I’ll hang up my camera, notebook or gradebook. Or all three. This isn’t the first time I’ve had the full range of students in one day. There were many times in recent years I’d start at Woodland, then head to Edison Darke County campus with mostly post-secondary students, then head to the Piqua campus where the vast majority of students were adult learners working on a career change. Those days are fascinating. Really. I remember walking into the high school with a teacher one morning and getting into some small talk. I made an observa-
tion about ‘my’ kids. “I started the day yesterday with first graders,” I said, “then moved to high school, then adult learners; all in the same day. You know what I discovered?” I asked. She shook her head. “Learning levels may be different but there are striking similarities in behavior, regardless of age.” I don’t think she appreciated the comment. “Oh, I hope not,” she said. Last week I met a young lady who proved my point. The day before, I worked with three 8-year-olds who were consumed with summer fever. They couldn’t sit still. One was alternately sitting in his chair, then – somehow – figured out how to lay sideways in it. Then back again. Another would sit for a few seconds, then she would climb behind it and look through the hole in the back. The third? He spent more time in other parts of the room than he did in his chair. Then I met Editor Ryan Berry’s oldest
daughter. I often make trips to the M.E.’s office… questions, comments… you know, the “talk to the boss” thing? The first time I saw his oldest daughter, she was building something out of odds and ends. Had no clue what it was. The next time I stopped in she was behind his back drawing a quite realistic picture of her father on his white board. It was hilarious. The third time? She’d cut a “mouth” and two huge “eyelashes” out of a piece of paper and had taped them to her face. I cracked up, thankful she wasn’t a student I was trying to tutor at the moment. And yes, I remembered she just got her learner’s permit. It proved my point. Behavior – adult or juvenile – doesn’t have an age limit. Editor Ryan has watched it in action through the years. I accept and work with it by choice. He has none, but if you know him you won’t feel sorry for him. He brought it on himself.

people who appear different from you: I encourage you to focus attention on passing legislation that will limit the possibility that guns end up in the wrong hands at public gatherings and in homes. Cheryl Stafford Bradford ----------------------------------Reestablish Nation Under God Dear citizens of Darke County, I do not know if this will be published before the celebration of our Independence on July 4th, but I wanted to share some thoughts with the citizens of our county. Have you taken the time to read our Declaration of Independence and Constitution, especially the Bill of Rights, recently? Do you value the rights that these documents are meant to guaran-
tee to us? In appreciation for the founders of our country, for all who have died defending our country and those who still serve to keep us free, consider reading the documents on which this country was founded. Then ask yourself, if you feel our government is protecting our rights or systematically taking these right away. If you value religious freedom and the other rights set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, let your voice be heard before it is too late. Our founding fathers established the country on the law of nature and law of God. Our government is systematically removing God from the equation and in doing so forfeiting our right to God’s protection of this country. Our present government does not want to
offend people, who either do not believe in God or whose religious beliefs are greatly different from our own or whose moral values are far removed from the tenets put forth by our Creator for man’s spiritual and physical welfare. It does not say anywhere in the Declaration of independence or the Constitution that special interest groups are to get preferential treatment. They do however protect religious freedom, the right to bear arms and the right to own property for all citizens of our country. We need to wake up and do as our forefathers did and reestablish this Nation under God, so that he will again look with favor on our country, which has essentially abandoned Him. GREENVILLE – The summer months mean the kids are out of school, hot weather has returned and traveling begins. Are you planning a trip this summer? You can go almost anywhere whether it is to the beach or the mountains. If you have diabetes, it takes just a little planning to keep your blood glucose in control. Traveling can make it hard to keep your blood glucose within your target range because of changes in meal times, types of food available, and activity. Check your blood glucose frequently when you are on vacation. Here are some tips to make traveling easier. Packing tips: * Pack extra supplies including testing strips, lancets, batteries, medication. * Make sure you pack your supplies in your carry-on bag. * Keep insulin cool with a cooler or ice pack. * Wear an ID that identifies that you have diabetes. * Carry a fast acting source of carbohydrate, like glucose tablets, in case your blood glucose drops. * Bring your physicians name and phone number. * Pack a list of the medications you are taking. At the airport: * Tell security that you are a diabetic and that you are carrying medical supplies. *Have a prescription label with a name that matches the boarding tick-
et for your medications. * You can bring syringes/insulin pen needles on the airplane if you have insulin with you. Do not forget foot care: * Bring extra shoes to prevent blisters and sore pressure points. * Check your feet often and treat minor foot injuries. * Do not go barefoot. Protect your feet when walking by the pool, in the park, or on the beach. To learn more about living a healthy life with diabetes, consider attending Group Diabetes Classes at Wayne HealthCare. Group classes meet once a week for four weeks. Group classes provide comprehensive education regarding the diabetes disease process, monitoring, medications, exercise, reducing risk of complications, coping with diabetes, and nutrition management. The cost is $40 for the series of four classes. The next group classes will be held July 7, 14, 21, and 28, from 1-3 p.m. Pre-registration for the classes is required. If you prefer to meet individually with the Certified Diabetes Educator, you can receive education regarding Diabetes SelfManagement Education (DSME) and Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). For more information regarding the programs offered by Wayne HealthCare Diabetes Self Management Program, call 547-5750.

GREENVILLE – One in two Americans have at least one chronic disease – those conditions that are treated and managed, but not often cured. Chronic disease takes an enormous toll on peoples’ lives, but fortunately there are ways to manage symptoms and maintain active and fulfilling lives. The Area Agency on Aging offers Healthy U to help people develop the skills and coping strategies they need to manage their symptoms. Healthy U is an interactive, small group workshop that has been proven to improve quality of life and reduce health care expenses by increasing self-confidence and providing new skills so that participants can better manage their symptoms and feel healthier. Instead of focusing on any one disease, participants explore new ways to address challenges common to anyone with a long-term health problem. The program focuses on common problems like pain management, nutrition, exercise, medication use, emotions, and communicating with doctors and family about your illness. Participants develop skills and coping strategies to manage their symptoms through

Local fire dept. gets $22,000 grant

Blacksmith most important person in a frontier town BY BOB ROBINSON ASSOC. EDITOR www.bluebagmedia.com GREENVILLE – “The blacksmith is the most important person in town.” Jeff Brocious and Galen Delk, apprentice blacksmiths, were busy fashioning tools and decorative iron from the flames at the Shawnee Prairie Blacksmith Shop, the newest addition to the Darke County Park District. Delk continued… “He made the nails, tools, any skill work using metal. Doctors used him to reset bones (because of his strength). A town could do without doctors, bankers – at least for a while – but not the blacksmith.” It’s a Saturday afternoon and Parks volun-
teers are at the Blacksmith Shop and the Log House from 1 to 4 p.m. This public opportunity is available through September. Contrary to popular opinion, the blacksmith was important but not for horseshoes or knives. “Those were totally different individuals,” Delk said. “The farrier did the horseshoes and knives were done by the bladesmith.” Brocious noted some of the other items blacksmiths made, including pliers, candelabras, post hooks, about 20 different kinds of nails and spikes, hinges… wall hooks. “Anything made out of metal, he did it.” As they talked Brocious was working on various tools while Delk
worked on some of the more decorative items, such as the shepherd’s hook and a wall hook. The shepherd’s hook required several twists with the help of a vice, cooling in water and brushing to clean the metal. When finished a wax coating was used. The entire process took about 20 minutes. A few minutes later Delk created a smaller version wall hook with a single twist… this finished product took about 10 minutes and was taken home as a souvenir by 10-year-old Brixon Schmiesing from Plymouth, Mich. Many of the items Delk and Brocious were working on are for the Gathering at Garst, coming up the last weekend in July.
The Blacksmith Shop and Log House have been open Saturday afternoons since early May. The construction on S.R. 502 has slowed traffic somewhat, however Galen said their visitors are there because the want to be. They have no problem with the detours. Until construction is finished (late June or early July) most visitors take S.R. 571 to Daly then east on 502. Visitors stop at the Log House on the way to the Blacksmith Shop. Volunteers there talk about the lives of the early pioneers on the prairie. Many of the tools used by these pioneers were made by their local blacksmith.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – New federal resources have been awarded to a fire department in Darke County. U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) recently announced that New Madison Community Volunteer Fire Company Inc. has been awarded resources for Operations and Safety by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program. “Firefighters put their lives on the line each day to keep our communities safe,” Brown said. “These new federal resources will help ensure that New Madison’s skilled responders have the updated resources they need to
safely do their jobs.” New Madison Community Volunteer Fire Company Inc. was awarded $22,331 in funding as part of the round 10 competitive Fiscal Year 2013 AFG Program announcements. The Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program helps firefighters and other first responders improve their ability to protect the public and themselves. Projects funded in the Operations and Safety category include training, facility upgrades and modifications, and supplies such as protective equipment. Interested fire departments can contact Brown’s Grant Coordinator to receive information about federal grant opportunities.

Bears Mill offers history and art in a natural setting BY BOB ROBINSON ASSOC. EDITOR www.bluebagmedia.com GREENVILLE – The flow of grain is important… too fast? Not fine enough. Too slow? Burned. So they had to pay attention to the flow of the grain when the French buhr stones were grinding the flour… “That’s where the phrase ‘keep your nose to the grindstone’ came from,” said Bears Mill ‘Ranger’ Terry Clark. The former co-owner (with his wife Julie) had once referred to himself as the Mayor of Bears Mill, but opted over recent years to stick with ‘Ranger.’ He is one of the few people in the state who can run a water-powered stonegrinding flour mill, and Bears Mill is one of the few still operating in Ohio. Clark conducts tours of the mill Saturdays at 2 p.m. (call 548-5112 to confirm schedule), providing detailed information about how the mill was built and powered, as well as anecdotes such as where the phrase “get the lead out” came from… Holding an 1832 long gun costing about $6 in 1834,
he said people would put extra lead balls in their mouths so they could reload faster. Sometimes they would swallow one… the next day “they would get the lead out.” Buhr stones cost about $6,000 a pair in 1849 when the mill was built and were only available in France. It was a 2-year journey but worth it for their abrasive and porous qualities, resulting in a slow, cool grinding process. This prevents unnecessary loss of nutrients, something modern milling can’t claim. Clark is full of stories about the mill and the history surrounding it. He takes tours through three floors, from hauling grain through the top floor window with a winch rope to delivering the finished product to the first floor. While history is one major focus of Bears Mill, so is art and nature. His wife, Julie, a potter, found the antique artistry and idyllic setting inspirational… as did many local artists. The mill offers an “Artists Series” of rotating art exhibitions. The mill sells its own stoneground flours

and meals, as well as other products emphasizing handmade and made in U.S.A. The mill is located just east of Greenville at 6450 Arcanum-Bear’s Mill Road. The “Friends of Bear’s Mill” purchased the mill from the Clarks in 2013. A nonprofit organization, it obtained a grant for the purchase but operates on mill sales, donations, pledges and other forms of fundraising to keep the mill operational for today’s and future generations. Various pledge levels have names, with the top one called “Rufus McCooter.”
“Rufus McCooter is our friendly spirit,” said Clark. Two mill visitors, Matt and Tory Charles, had enjoyed the tour but became especially interested at the McCooter comment. They own and operate Weston Paranormal Investigations. Clark shared the story of coming in at 4:30 or 5 a.m. and he’d hear maybe a hundred or so people go through the front door… “It’s so active it’s scary.” Referring to them as friendly spirits, Clark added “they never hurt me, but I’ve heard my name.”
Dave Knapp supports local athletes through SSSF BY BOB ROBINSON ASSOC. EDITOR www.bluebagmedia.com GREENVILLE – Dave Knapp Ford Lincoln has provided two scholarships to graduating seniors who have excelled in their respective high school sports programs. The scholarships, presented through the Senior Scribes Scholarship program, went to Abbey O’Donnell, Arcanum Class of 2014, and Travis Fietshans, Franklin Monroe Class of 2014. “We would like to thank everyone who has helped us,” said Abbey, and echoed by Travis, as they thanked Kristina Knapp-Bradley, Dave Knapp Ford’s marketing director. Both were appreciative to sports writer George Starks, who nominated them to
receive this year’s scholarship. This is the third year Dave Knapp Ford has been part of the SSSF scholarship program. Abbey will be heading to Bluffton University in the fall and plans to double major in Intervention Specialist and Early Childhood Education. Sports is still a part of her plan, however, as she plans to minor in coaching and will be playing Bluffton basketball. She got a jump on her college credits through the Sinclair College post-secondary program. Travis heads to Ohio Northern University this fall to play basketball and major in computer engineering. He also got a head start through postsecondary coursework; he received his credits through Edison Commu-

nity College. Both would like to come back to Darke County, although Travis acknowledged it might be a little difficult with his career path. Favorite memories? “My freshman year when we beat Jefferson in the tournament,” he said.
“They had won state the year before.” Abbey’s was more local. “When we beat TriVillage… we hadn’t beaten them in seven years,” she said. “We had two girls transfer to Tri-Village…” For Abbey it was “payback.”
BY CLINTON RANDALL STAFF WRITER www.bluebagmedia.com GREENVILLE – In honor of those who are caregivers or suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, the Brethren Retirement Community (BRC) held The Longest Day event Wednesday, June 18th at it’s facility in Greenville. This being the third year for the sunrise to sunset event which is recognized nationally to help raise money and awareness about the disease that affects over five million American’s today. According to the Alzheimer’s Association approximately 16 million are expected to be affected by 2050. The theme The Longest Day refers to the June 21 summer solstice which is known as the longest day of the year and how every day is a struggle for those caring for Alzheimer’s patients. Eric VanVlymen, the Executive Director of the Miami Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, attended the evening ceremony at the Brethren Retirement Community. “We come out to celebrate the millions of caregivers who deal with Alzheimer’s every day,” VanVlymen stated. “It is great how the Brethren Retirement Community pulled together to make The Longest Day a success.” Approximately 200 Individuals walked around the pond at the BRC facility with 84 luminaries being placed around the entire walkway that stayed lit throughout the
night. Each luminary displayed a name of a victim or caregiver affected by Alzheimer’s. BRC exceeded their goal raising over $2000 from the event. This event is designed to pull communities together to honor the strength, passion and endurance of those facing Alzheimer’s and to raise awareness of the disease and the urgent need to find a cure and cause. According to a representative of BRC, 1,442 laps were recorded with 240.33 miles walked during the Longest Day event. BRC President & CEO John Warner ran 13.1 miles and walked an additional 98 laps. Todd Reish, the BRC Chaplain walked 122 laps, while Director of Senior FITness, Chelsea Halderman, traveled around the pond 77 times. The resident with the most laps was Peggy Kidwell who walked 25 times around. A list of caregivers and victims of Alzheimer’s were read aloud at throughout the day and at the evening closing ceremony before a bundle of purple balloons were released into the air. BRC staff and those that were present at the closing ceremony joined together to sing the inspiration song from the civil rights movement “We Shall Overcome”. Museum will host ice cream social
Alan Monnin is shown with Best of Show display and Micki Marquis, judge of the 2014 Versailles Poultry Days Flower Show.
Monnin has Best of Show at Poultry Days Flower Show VERSAILLES – The weather was beautiful, the chicken great, the people happy and the flowers gorgeous. The arrangements and the roses and perennials were every bit as special this year as ever. Thanks to people finding new rose bushes, they were back to having a rose in every category. Surprisingly, they came up short in the iris category, but the clematis exhibited with more varieties than ever! There was a class in the artistic arrangements this year for novice entrants, which means the
entrant had never won a blue ribbon in arrangements at the Poultry Days Flower Show. This year’s Best of Show rosette for arrangements went to Alan Monnin for his entry in You Are My Sunshine, which was a vision in yellows from the beautiful yellow bowl all the way to the top with gorgeous ‘home grown’ peonies against lush greens and spotted with delicate white accent flowers. See a complete list of results at www.bluebagmedia, search Poultry Days Flower Show.
GREENVILLE – Michelle Chen, from Greenville, was recently named to the Dean’s List at the College of William & Mary for the spring 2014 semester. In order to achieve
Dean’s List status, a full-time degree seeking undergraduate student must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a 3.6 Quality Point Average during the semester.
Dean’s List
VERSAILLES – All are invited to join the Versailles Historical Society on their “front porch” for an ole fashioned Ice Cream Social at the museum on July 6, 4-6 p.m. They will be serving up delicious ice cream in your choice of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and lemon for a donation. Also on special display will be the original Ward Drug Store Ice Cream Maker that helped make that great Ward Ice Cream all those years ago. To
further add to your enjoyment they will enjoy the sounds of the Gathering Place Jammers from Russia. They also plan to have some demonstrations of how hard it was to make ice cream from scratch. The museum will be open from 1-4 p.m. prior to the Social for you to browse through their 22 rooms of wonderful tales from the areas past. Also, their new book “All Roads Lead Home” will be available for you to take home.
Camp BEARable registration taken GREENVILLE – State of the Heart Hospice is accepting registrations for the nonprofit agency’s 14th annual Camp BEARable July 11-13 at the Spiritual Center at Maria Stein. The camp is free and is open to any youth, six to 15, who is grieving the loss of a loved one. There need be no association with hospice care. The weekend camp features fun and games mixed with serious dialogue about grief and loss. Each child is paired with a specially trained “buddy” who spends time with the
youth. The camp concludes with a balloon launch on Sunday afternoon. Each of the past two years 64 youth have attended the camp, and most of those attending had no association with hospice care. More information is available at the agency web site, www. stateoftheheartcare. org. An application is available on the web site as well. For more information about registering or to learn more about camp, call 1-800-417-7535 and ask to speak to a member of the bereavement staff.
Officers from the three county region completed the Crisis Intervention Team Academy presented by Tri-County of Recovery and Mental Health Services.
Officers complete 2014 CIT Academy
DARKE COUNTY – Twenty three law enforcement officers from Darke, Miami and Shelby Counties completed the Crisis Intervention Team Academy April 28-May 1, presented by the TriCounty Board of Recovery and Mental Health Services. Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training is a nationally recognized program that teaches law enforcement safe and effective approaches to handling crisis incidents involving a mentally ill individual. The intensive 4-day training is conducted under the instructional supervision of local CITtrained police officers, mental health professionals, consumers, and family advocates and offers practical techniques for de-escalating crisis situations.
CIT Coordinator Jodi Long, Director of Clinical Services and planning for the Tri-County Board, said, “The CIT Academy and the companion courses have been extremely successful. Officers tell us they now feel better equipped to handle calls involving mental health crises, and those of us involved with mental health services have a better understanding of what the law enforcement officers deal with in the field.” The class of 2014 is the ninth law enforcement group to complete the program, bringing the total number of trained officers to 173. For more information about the CIT Academy or companion courses, see the Tri-County Board’s website at www. mdsadamhs.mh.state. oh.us/community.

Tailgating Party at First Presbyterian GREENVILLE – MainStreet Greenville’s First Friday is catching on and the church family of First Presbyterian at 114 E. Fourth Street is planning to share that experience with other Darke Countians! Free parking and ice cream to go with all the “fixins” will be available outside the church to welcome all those who are enjoying the resurgence of downtown on July 11, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Just a short hop and a skip east of Broadway on
Fourth, the Presbyterians wanted to enter into the spirit of First Friday with food that could be carried along and could even be eaten while watching the outdoor movie “Frozen” at the Theatre on Third Street. Some of the older congregation members remember when such things were available when they were young and Greenville was known as a Saturday night town. Men sitting around the Courthouse wall with their children,
exchanging gossip while their wives did the shopping, was a real treat for those children since a popular popcorn vendor sold great popcorn on that corner. MainStreet Greenville is reviving that tradition on Friday nights and giving the community an opportunity to experience how beautiful and friendly the downtown area really is. First Presbyterian Church invites you to be part of that experience.
Mr. Molecule at Family Fun Day GREENVILLE – The Greenville Public Library’s Family Fun Days continue with more great entertainment! On July 2, 11 a.m., Mr. Molecule will perform on the front lawn. In case of rain programs are held in the Church Activity Building on Devor. When Mr. Molecule unleashes the power and excitement of science – Bing! Bang! Boom! – he

science principles. Mr. Molecule’s Science Show is a whole new way for kids to discover science and experience the joy of learning. Keep up with the Library’s Children’s Department on Facebook. Family Fun Day is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Four Cincinnati Reds Tickets, two Cincinnati Zoo tickets, and $50 Darden Restaurants gift card went to Brittney Davidson of Greenville. The final prize was given to Bill McLain of Sidney who won gift package compliments of KitchenAid and $25 Applebee’s gift card. The eighth Annual 5K run/walk had 376 registered participants. Overall results can be found at www. goodtimesracing. com. Proceeds from the event will benefit the local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency which matches at-risk children with volunteer adult role models. These volunteers who are screened thoroughly by agency staff meet with children at least two times per month offering guidance, support, and positive rolemodeling. The concept of services by Big Brothers Big Sisters is to
get community members to open up their lives to a young child within their own community. It does not take a great deal of time, money, or talent; the volunteers just need to care about children. Community members who feel they don’t want to make a commitment of volunteering can help the agency in other ways. The agency is always looking for cost saving ideas for activities that our volunteers can do with their matched Littles. In the past years, companies and individuals have donated tickets to local events, sporting events, or hosted a special outing for the Big Brothers Big Sisters group. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a nonprofit United Way member agency. For more information on how you can become a volunteer and make a difference in a child’s life contact the local agency at 492-7611, 5479622, or log onto www.bigbrobigsisshelbydarke.org.
