Annie and Frank will visit Gathering GREENVILLE – The Gathering at Garst will welcome Annie Oakley and Frank Butler to the Garst Museum Grounds on July 25 and 26. Annie will perform on stage at 1 p.m. on Saturday and 3:15 p.m. on Sunday. Cathy and Don Wagner from Brown Deer, Wis., have been reenacting Annie Oakley and Frank Butler since 1999. They have researched Annie and Frank’s lives over the years, visiting the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, WY; Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave at Lookout Mountain in Golden, CO; Scouts Rest Ranch in North Platte, NE; Buffalo Bill’s Birthplace in Le Claire, Iowa; Annie Oakley’s birthplace and the Garst Museum in Greenville. They share this information with their audiences during their 45 minute presentation on Annie’s life, focusing mainly on her time with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. If space allows, they can also perform many of the shots Annie used in her shows. For the Gathering at the Garst, they will be greeting people at their tent and sharing memorabilia they have collected. Children can try

their hand at the Annie Oakley Shooting Gallery by shooting rubber band guns at targets

Who was that walking around? GREENVILLE – Walking among visitors at the Gathering, one might see interesting characters from the past. These folks have come to the Gathering for one reason…or maybe two. Yes, rodent control, specifically, rat control, is the duty of Silas, the ratcatcher. Silas may have some hygiene issues but he is the best

that we can do on our limited budget here at the Gathering. He, unlike his caged pet rat, is perfectly harmless, but do wash your hands after touching. Heroes and Legends of Darke County GREENVILLE – Annie Oakley called this place home and she was not alone. Famed broadcaster, Lowell Thomas and dirigible pilot, Lieutenant Commander Zachary Lansdowne also made their mark in history and came from Darke County. These stories along with new ones will be shared with visitors during The Gathering at Garst Museum on July 25 and 26. What is the definition of a hero? The dictionary says a hero is a champion, conqueror, and brave among other things. The dictionary says the word legendary describes someone who is famous, great, and celebrated. Certainly many of Darke County’s heroes and legendary citizens can be described in this way. The Gathering at Garst is celebrating Darke County’s famous sons and daughters who left a legacy that we continue to honor and pass on to future generations. Their stories of skill, bravery, and sacrifice are still relevant and interesting today. Let’s remember them.

Annie Oakley

Embraced and beloved by the nation, Little Miss Sure Shot toured the United States and Europe displaying her renowned marksmanship. Annie was born on August 13, 1860 and though she started from humble

beginnings in Darke County, she grew to captivate sold-out crowds in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, performed for royalty and heads of state, and is widely considered the first international female superstar. Throughout her vibrant and highly successful career, Annie Oakley remained kind and humble and was a continual advocate of women’s knowledgeable and safe use of firearms. Her fascinating exhibit, showcasing both personal mementos and lively performance memorabilia, is maintained by The National Annie Oakley Center within the Garst Museum.

Zachary Lansdowne

Born in Greenville in 1888, Zachary L a n s d ow n e ’s sights were set on the sky and he became the Lt.Commander of the USS Sh e n an d o ah , a lighter-thanair dirigible commissioned by the United States Navy. Lifted by helium gas, the massive Shenandoah spanned 682 feet, had a girth of 80 feet, weighed in at 41 tons, had the capabilities to cruise 70 mph for 5000 miles, and was powered by 300 gas engines. An active and vocal promoter of the value of dirigibles in military applications, Lansdowne took command of the USS Shenandoah in 1924 and piloted the huge airship along the east coast, over the Rocky

Mountains to California, and across the Southern States. The grand dirigible met her end on September 3, 1925 when she encountered an unavoidable late summer storm in northern Ohio. Though there were survivors, Zachary Lansdowne, along with 14 crewmen crashed to the Earth and lost their lives. This unfortunate scenario, coupled with the equally tragic crash of the Hindenburg, led to the virtual end of dirigible production in 1937. As a tribute to Lansdowne’s bravery, the naval destroyer, the USS Lansdowne DD486 was commissioned in his honor in 1942.

eventually became the beloved commentator of CBS Radio Network’s nightly newscast; which became the program with the longest continuous-run in broadcasting history. These are just but a few of our local heroes. If you would like to learn more about these and other Darke County legends, be sure to visit Garst Museum. An extensive collection is housed inside its doors just waiting for you to come visit. Become a member of The Darke County Historical Society and admission is FREE. Stop by the welcome tent at The Gathering to get details about becoming a member or visit www.garstmuseum.org.

Lowell Thomas

Adventurer, explorer, world traveler, and author; these are all words that describe L o w e l l Thomas. His own ambition and curiosity carried him away to far off places and it was film and radio that allowed the nation to tag along for the adventure. He authored over 60 books, documented his experiences with Lawrence of Arabia, helped rescue Ramses from the rising waters of the Nile’s Aswan Dam, aided the Dalai Lama raising funds for Tibetan refugees, and, amazingly, much more. Born in Woodington in 1892, he nurtured his appetite for exploration and storytelling from an early age and

History comes to life in encampment GREENVILLE – Thunderous, bone-rattling, downright earthshaking-loud is how to describe the cannon firing demonstrations by the Mad River Light Artillery at the Gathering at Garst. Make sure you visit the Living History Encampment, sponsored by Maid Rite Sandwich Shoppe, and step back in time. The encampment is set up in a timeline manner dating from 1750-1865. Re-enactors in period clothing demonstrate what life was like back in the day. Watch the blacksmith hammer iron into useful tools, the basket weaver

weaving fine baskets, the box maker busy bending wood. Skilled historic craftsmen will be making copper mugs, vessels and tools made of horns and brooms. These are all unique one-of-akind handmade pieces of art. Native American Indians were here before the white settlers arrived. Listen to their stories of survival and daily life. Many battles took place during these times from the Revolutionary War thru the Civil War. You will see what their camps were like and smell the gunpowder used to fuel their guns and cannons.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions as the folks are friendly and eager to share their knowledge with visitors. The cannon demonstrations will take place both days throughout the day along with skirmishes, and storytelling. Children’s games and carriage rides along the shaded camp will be a-plenty. This year’s Living History participants include Hank Steinmetz – Blacksmoke Forge; Twisted Willow Traders; Steven Caudill – Daniel Boone Of Kentucky; Daniel Hrinko, Box Maker; Short Canoe Trading Co.;

Randal Bales – Primitive Camp; Margaret Bickenheuser – Basket Weaver; Gary & Cindy Moore – Primitive; Mike Collier – Broom Maker ; Russell Morris – Native American; Mad River Light Artillery; Steve Myers – Primitive Camp; Scratching Post Scrimshaw; 1st Tennessee Co B; 4th Indiana Light Artillery; Friendship Farms Goatmilk Soap; J. Gier Horworks & Turnery; The Rathskeller Werkes – Copper; John Burkett – Botanical Pressings; Shawnee Prairie –Primitive Camp; Silas The Ratcatcher; and Dr. Balthasar – Medicine Man.

Dedication to event makes it a success GREENVILLE – Celebrating its fifth year, The Gathering at Garst continues to grow and bring a sense of pride to our community. Without the continued support of their sponsors, the dedication of the Gathering Committee, and the volunteers that help set up, staff, and tear down the event, it could not happen. A huge debt of gratitude goes out to all involved. The Darke County Historical Society and Garst Museum thanks them for their continued support. St. Clairs definition of a legendary couple GREENVILLE –The Gathering at Garst will be honoring the folks that not only shaped and enriched the county we live in but contributed their passion, energy, and vision to make it a truly wonderful place to call home. Henry St. Clair is the very definition of a legend. His community spirit and generosity can still be felt all these years later. A grocery store owner and organizer for Second National Bank, he was looked to as a pillar of the community. He was beloved by young and old and, in a time when schools would often send children home if they arrived for class in tattered clothing, took the initiative and financial responsibility to ensure that any of those children had proper clothing. There were so many children that Mr. St. Clair had helped over the years, that the schools let out early on the day of his funeral and the children marched to his procession to display their respect. He envisioned a performing arts hall next to the library for the community to enjoy and, when the desired location already had the Greenville

High School occupying its spot, he paid for the school to be moved (it’s currently the Junior High building). The Henry St. Clair Memorial Hall is definitely related to the study of humanities because the building itself has so much history and value. The detail and vivid color of the three stained glass windows at the front of the main entrance above the foyer, the panel on the left signifies Literature. The Latin phrase “Cogito-Ergo-Sum” written across the bottom – I think therefore I am. The second panel, in the middle, represents Labor. The Latin phrase “VitaeVia-Virtus” written across the bottom – Manly excellence along the road of life. The third panel expresses Art. The Latin phrase “Non-Sine-Labore” written across the bottom – Nothing without hard work. It is said that Ella St. Clair gave those three glass windows as a gift to the building. These windows show and tell, through much symbolism, the standards that Henry St. Clair wanted to bring to Greenville. We can definitely see that the art standard has shown through the restoration

of these magnificent windows. Literature, Labor, and Art is what Memorial Hall is all about. This performing arts building was named St. Clair Memorial Hall and opened for its first grand performance on May 3, 1912, roughly 5 years after Mr. St. Clair’s death. Today the Darke County Center for the Arts

calls St. Clair Memorial Hall home. The legacy of Henry St. Clair continues all these years later as we continue to feel the effects of his amazing life. A special tribute to Henry and Ella St. Clair will take place during the Saturday evening concert at The Gathering.
