Connecting at The Gathering
JULY 21, 2019-SUPPLEMENT TO THE EARLY BIRD - THE GATHERING AT GARST - PAGE 3
Connecting with friends, connecting with history, connecting with artists and performers—The Gathering at Garst is the perfect event to connect it all. Visiting The Gathering at Garst puts you in touch with the past and the present. The event illustrates the pride that we have in our community and its rich heritage, and we welcome you. Strolling the grounds, you will see friends and stop to chat with them. Perhaps each of you goes to his or her favorite food vendor and then joins others under the tent for stimulating conversation or to listen to engaging performers. You are amazed at the talented artists who exhibit their unique works in several different media. The museum grounds are beautiful and offer the perfect venue to gather in the good ole summertime. The Living History Encampment
gives you retro vision into the rich history of Darke County and the Greenville area. You feel the force of the cannons in your chest, you catch the smell of gun powder, and you see re-enactors in period dress conceptualize that time in history when the Treaty of Greeneville opened up the Northwest Territory for this country’s westward expansion, a most significant contribution to the American experience. A visit inside the museum reveals artifacts that preserve our history and culture that otherwise might be lost for future generations. Sponsorships and hundreds of volunteer hours make this event possible. The Gathering at Garst Committee wishes to thank the generous sponsors for their financial or in-kind donations and the volunteers who have worked tireless hours that culminate in this extraordinary event.
Visitors can relax while waiting for the Saturday evening concert to begin.

It will feel like you’ve taken a step back in time when you visit the Encampment at the Gathering at Garst.
See history come alive and get a glimpse of how our forefathers lived.
Staged under century old oak trees, the living history encampment at the Gathering at Garst is a mesmerizing experience. Stepping back in time among the bustling village campsites will fill you with the sights and sounds of early life in Darke County. Settlers, traders, soldiers, and Native Americans all gather here sharing stories of the past and yarns from the rugged trail. The camp activities begin at 4 p.m. on Friday as visitors are welcome to walk thru the shady camp. As daylight fades away, the lanterns will be lit and the campfires stoked. This a special time filled with the sounds of drumming, singing, storytelling and dancing that reflects the traditions of Native Americans. The vibrancy of the Living History

Encampment continues on Saturday and Sunday. It reflects the efforts and support given by Darke County Parks and Galen Delk, resident blacksmith at Shawnee Prairie Preserve, spearheading the project. This year, visitors meandering through the encampment will find a host of Early American proprietors demonstrating and selling their wares. Tinsmiths, basket makers, broom makers, weavers, and tanners will all be open for business. Perusing the paths of the encampment, folks will likely be drawn into a contagious and lighthearted spree of 18th century dancing by the Liberty Dancers. Recipe for success at the Gathering Many people take for granted that a beloved festival or event will continue on forever. Although this would be every event coordinators goal, the success does not depend on one person’s determination. There are many factors that weigh into creating and sustaining an event. A good foundation of committees and chairpersons is essential. Delegating responsibilities to everyone makes sure that all goals are accomplished. Volunteers are needed to help set up before, during, and after the event. Volunteers staff specific booths working two-hour shifts at the Gathering. Community involvement is essential and helps everyone feel “a part of”. Event expenses add up, especially when the event is free to the public. As more and more events and food truck rallies take place, sponsors and volunteers must decide where their support should go and ask if this a worthy cause they are supporting. How is the event giving back to the community and how does it represent our community? Will visitors want to come back to Greenville, will they speak highly of the event, how are the organizers, whether they are a non-profit or private organizer benefiting? Sponsorships from businesses, grants, and private funders help offset the expenses at the Gathering for which we are grateful. In addition, the Gathering committee sells ice cream, pie, beer and wine. Vendors pay to participate and we charge to park on the museum grounds. We have always paid our expenses and generated a profit
which goes to Garst Museum. Why does all this matter? Besides generating much needed revenue for Garst Museum, it is an opportunity to bring awareness to the museum and share our history. In the nine years that the Gathering has been on the museum grounds, visitors from the surrounding communities, states and many different countries have discovered what a gem we have right here in Darke County. Many come back every year with friends and family in tow. We have received state wide recognition as a premier event and with the continued support of sponsors, volunteers and the community, the Gathering at Garst will continue to succeed and this is exactly what we had hoped for.

Gather round the Entertainment Tent This year’s entertainment lineup is creating a lot of buzz…with the Buzz Ford Show and the American Kings bringing their fan club, the entertainment tent will be a hoppin’ place! Thanks to our entertainment tent sponsors, Financial Achievement Services, Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Dr. Stephen Stentzel, Rodney Oda, Steve and Eileen Litchfield, Tom and Julie Graber, Wayne HealthCare, and Reid Health, all of the on stage entertainment is free for everyone to enjoy. Musical genres ranging from folk and pop/rock to California-cool and bluegrass will span both Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28. Word has it that in addition to the musical performances, Cathy Wagner, portraying Annie Oakley will be sharing stories about Annie and will be on stage Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and again on Sunday at 1 p.m. Country music singer songwriters “ReFlektion” are a duo from Piqua made up of twin brothers Jared and Justin Younce, born on Nov. 21, 1995. These twin brothers found their love for country music early in life by digging through their parent’s CD stash of 90’s country music artists such as Brooks & Dunn, George Strait, and Garth Brooks and have been writing/perusing music since the young age of 14. They released their first single in 2017 called Young Americans and their second single in
2018 titled “This Small Town,” which was written about their hometown Piqua and featured in the music video “This Small Town Piqua.” They just released another single for their fans on April 6 of 2019 called “Feelin’ Right.” ReFlektion performs on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The charismatic Shannon Clark and the Sugar follows with their upbeat mixtures of soul, pop, folk, and rock is front and center from 4-6 p.m. Shannon Clark and The Sugar currently reside in the Dayton area, and play a mixture of soul, pop, folk, and rock, and love covering classic, familiar songs. They’re currently working on their second full-length studio album and are playing local, regional, and national shows to support their critically-acclaimed first album, “Carry Me.” Final Bow Center for Children’s Performing Arts will be opening for The American Kings by performing a few of their dance moves to get the crowd in the mood to rock and roll. Not sure what the kiddos will surprise the crowd with, but you just know it will be adorable. Look for them around 7 p.m. The Butterfly Jr. Garden Club will be working the concert crowd selling delicious fry pies and soda pop. These young gardeners will be dressed like car-hops carrying trays. Give ‘em a yell and if you want a snack.

Anna p.s.
Buzz Ford and the American Kings will take the stage at 8 p.m. These fellows really know how to rock and roll and their fan club does too. Bring your lawn chairs, relax and enjoy some pie and ice cream, sip a cold lemonade or beer and dance the night away. Sunday’s entertainment begins at noon with Anna p.s. Anna p.s. conveys a sense of weariness throughout her simple but resonant songs, but it’s a weariness that keeps a blanket of hope tucked up under its chin, even as the rain keeps falling outside the windows. Grace always lurks around the corner on tunes that layer delicate vulnerability over the hearty stock of this songwriter’s spirit. With technical acumen acquired during an early career as an audio engineer and a humble but confident stage presence groomed as a founding member of indie roots rock band. Shiny Shiny

Black, Anna stepped out as a solo musician in 2014. She’s been on the road intermittently ever since, and her debut LP Umbrella released in July 2016, showcasing her signature sonic blend of melancholy, hope, and resilience. At 1 p.m. Cathy Wagner returns to the stage as Annie Oakley. Closing out the Gathering this year is a new band called The Blue Leafs. Organizers have heard exciting things about them and look forward to their performance that begins at 3 p.m. The Blue Leaf’s, a four-piece band out of Tipp City, offers a classic rock experience like no other, showcasing hits that span multiple decades. They perform classic tunes of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, including music from The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Eagles, Chicago, The Who, Queen, Billy Joel, The Police, and many more. On top of this, the band has released two full albums of originally written, produced, and performed material that allows audiences to hear something different: modern music with a throwback sound. The Blue Leafs have worked for years to perfect the sound of their vocal harmonies, incorporating experience singing barbershop, classical choral music, and close-knit harmonies of classic rock. Their singing prowess is mirrored only by their musicianship, featuring four masters of their respective instruments.

Construction won’t stop the fun This is not news to locals, but in case you are visiting Greenville for the first time, there is a lot of road construction going on. Next year will be better. Getting to The Gathering at Garst will be your biggest challenge of the day. City officials have told festival organizers that North Broadway in front of the museum will be open for light traffic; however, they do expect some traffic conges-
tion in this area. The parking lot next to the museum can be accessed as usual from North Broadway. The back parking lot can be accessed from N. Broadway, by turning on Garst Avenue and drive to the back gate. Garst Avenue is one way traffic during event hours. You can also access the back parking lot from the Greenville City Park main entrance off of East Main
Street, which is what they recommend you do. Pedestrians walking to the event should use caution as there are still many trip hazards in the construction areas. There is a $5 per car fee to park in any of these locations. Proceeds go to the Arcanum Lions Club and the Garst Museum. Very limited handicap parking will be available on Wilson Drive next to the museum.
Handicapped access to the Gathering at Garst is at the front barricade on Wilson Drive near the museum entrance. Admission to the Gathering at Garst is free; however, regular admission rates apply to view the exhibits inside the Garst Museum. For more information, visit wwwgatheringatgarst.com.

Deciding they needed even more, they hit the trail heading south to Montgomery County and brought back a wagonload from Warped Wing Brewery. All in all, their
inventory of craft beer sounds refreshing and plentiful - shimmy up to the counter at the Trailside and throw one back. Now ladies, if beer is not your thing, don’t dismay. Scottie covered all the bases by inviting two local wineries to join the fun. The Winery at Versailles will be in the house with a fresh and
fruity selection to choose from. But wait there’s more… hiking in from Arcanum, the A.R. Winery will offer five of their best sellers! Now see… all this beer and wine will definitely make a hot July day feel… and smell better. Tavern hours are 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, July 27 and noon-5 p.m. Sunday, July 28.
