The Early Bird sponsors The Gathering at Garst GREENVILLE – The partnership between The Gathering at Garst and the Early Bird and Bluebag Media is undeniably part of the event’s success. Getting the word out “countywide” about The Gathering is done with the printing and distribution of the event newspaper that goes out to homes on July 22. The Early Bird’s ad representatives, graphic designers, and writers are experts on making this paper look “historically creative.” We are so grateful for

their continued support of this delightful community event. As part of their support, The Early Bird and Bluebag Media will once again have a booth at the event. Stop by and see the staff that helps bring news, information, entertainment and savings to 28,000 homes and businesses. Through Bluebag Media, The Early Bird is able to bring to residents their daily news from their weekly hometown, locallyowned newspaper. The booth will give visitors an opportunity to

sign up for a pair of Darke County Fair passes. The Gathering at Garst returns on July 28-29 to the grounds of Garst Museum.

There’s something for everyone— historical reenactments, antiques, artists and craftsmen, food, and entertainment. Find out more at www.gatheringatgarst.com.

Last Chance Mercantile is open for business GREENVILLE – Get your pocket books and coin purses ready because the Last Chance Mercantile will again offer a slew of treasures. Antique textiles, vintage ceramics, Depression glass, pewter and tarnished silver, rusty garden ornaments, and shabby architectural details can quite accurately describe the majority of items the Mercantile will be offering. Stocked solely from donations

kindly made by the residents of Greenville and surrounding communities, all sales benefit the Garst Museum. A diverse array of pieces will be offered on both Saturday 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Good deals and lovely finds are sure to be had. Pop into the Last Chance Mercantile because, as the name claims, it may just be your “last chance” to get your hands on a rare treasure.

We like to think of the Gathering as a postcard. Why a postcard? A postcard always serves as the perfect “snapshot” of an area, a city, or a landmark that defines a place. We picture the Gathering at Garst on the postcard for Darke County for a few reasons. It reflects our nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic --because it takes time and sweat from so many to bring the event to life each summer. It kindles our pride of place--because we celebrate our roots, our history, our neighbors and that makes us uniquely “us”. It garners the support of those that recognize how the event enriches the area--because sponsoring and volunteering at the Gathering at Garst shows that quality of life and longevity of community matter. We think the Gathering at Garst captures all that we should be proud of, all we should share with the rest of the world, and the characteristics we should be defined by. Thank you to our generous sponsors and volunteers. The Darke County Historical Society would like to thank the members of The Gathering at Garst Committee for all of their hard work to bring this quality event to the grounds of Garst Museum. Through their efforts, the community, county and visitors will know and appreciate our rich history.

Gonna have hot fun in the summertime GREENVILLE – This year’s entertainment lineup is creating a lot of buzz. As always, the entertainment tent will be a hoppin’ place at The Gathering at Garst. Thanks to their entertainment tent sponsors, Financial Achievement Services, Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Dr. Stephen Stentzel, Rodney Oda, Maid-Rite Sandwich Shoppe, Wayne Health Care, and Reid Health, all of the on-stage entertainment is free for everyone to enjoy. Musical genres ranging from folk and pop/rock to Californiacool and bluegrass will span both Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29. Megan Renee, a sweet-voiced soprano (think Dolly Parton) who performs all-original songs takes to the stage at noon on Saturday. The charismatic Shannon Clark and the Sugar follows with their upbeat mixtures of soul, pop, folk, and rock is front and center from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Noah Back, whose music draws influence from John Denver, Elvis Presley, and Cold Play charms the crowd from 4-6

p.m. The highlight of the evening will feature an amazing band the committee is really excited to bring to The Gathering at Garst. Sounds of Summer: A Beach Boys Tribute will perform the beloved harmonies and summer-loving melodies of the Beach Boys from 8-10 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs, relax and enjoy some pie and ice cream, sip a cold lemonade or beer and dance the night away. Sunday’s music begins at noon with a dose of 60’s and 70’s classic rock delivered by the band, Zeb and Jeff. Finally, Jeff Madewell and Buff Francis command the stage with their unique blend of blues, country, and classic rock from 3-5 p.m.

Volunteers bring The Gathering to life GREENVILLE – Look around during these times and see friends, family, even strangers and the lives they lead. Not even having to know the specifics of their day, you can safely assume that they squeeze a hundred tasks, some big and some small, into the short hours of a day. We are all so busy. Jenny Clark said, “Realizing this, I can’t help but visit a familiar scene of the old Andy Griffith Show; it’s a warm Sunday on the front porch where Andy, Barney, Opie, and Aunt Bea have settled into wicker chairs to whittle down the last hours of the week. Aunt Bea knits while Barney and Andy quietly sing along to the strumming on Andy’s guitar. This Mayberry image ebbs into my mind because it holds an intangible idea that is so important, yet ever elusive in the times in which we live. On the surface, it appears that these characters live in a slower time but I contest that it more importantly shows that they are taking the time to slow life

The Gathering at Garst volunteers include Jenny Clark, Galen Delk, Charlene Thornhill, Dave Warner, Katie Gabbard, Jeremy Davidson, Sue Besecker, Scott Fitzgerald, Debbie Shividecker, Kent Holmes, Debbie Ray, Angie, Arnold, Scott Ray, Betty Birt, Peggy Jasenski, Jack Clark, and Connie Norris. down.” She continued, “I think that this idea, one of hustle-bustle, business, and multi-tasking to the hilt, is the root of the reason that folks volunteer to help with the Gathering at Garst.” It’s not that the volunteers want one more thing in their life to juggle,

but it’s that they are offering their time for an event that encourages their town to slow down—even if just for a brief weekend. It’s a gift to walk through the Gathering at Garst and see folks visiting and connecting with one another. To watch friends and neighbors leisurely stroll through the

grounds and not be pressed by the heaviness of a to-do list but to only soak up music, art, and new experiences is a pleasure. When you bump into one of the Gathering at Garst volunteers, thank them. They help bring that little piece of the Mayberry dream to Greenville each summer.

Living History Encampment continues to grow GREENVILLE – Like a welltended garden, the Living History Encampment at the Gathering at Garst continues to grow. Watching it unfold from a sun-soaked open field to a bustling village of campsites, proprietors, and busy settlers is mesmerizing. In the evenings, the smoke from camps sink low to the ground and it’s the sure sign that the encampment is alive with stories of the past and yarns from the rugged trail. The vibrancy of the Living

History Encampment is a reflection of the efforts and support given by Darke County Parks and Galen Delk, resident blacksmith at Shawnee Prairie Preserve, spearheading the project. This year, visitors meandering through the encampment will find a host of Early American proprietors demonstrating and selling their wares. Tinsmiths, basket makers, broom makers, weavers, and tanners will all be open for business. Visitors may also explore

Be sure to come hungry to The Gathering GREENVILLE – There should be no excuses to leave The Gathering at Garst hungry – none. Over the years, The Gathering has built quite a tasty reputation on bringing together an array of delicious food vendors from both near and far. Short North Bagel Deli hails from Columbus while McNasty’s Food Truck chugs over from Dayton. Martin’s Lemonade hits the spot on a hot weekend, but they’re also adding coolness from Kona Ice and Bud’s Root Beer. There’s authentic craft beer from the Lewis and Clark Trailside Tavern to quench your thirst as well. The King’s Nuts and Maw-NPaw’s Kettle Corn are tasty snacks in between a full meal from local favorite Merchant House or the flavorful Nacho Pig. And don’t dare run off without dessert. Fruit-filled fry pies packed with fillings like peach, strawberry, cherry, apple, and black raspberry

are irresistible when paired with hand-dipped ice cream. One committee member said, “It had been decades since I last had a fry pie and, on a recent ‘test drive’ of this treat, I can whole-heartedly suggest that you put dessert first just to ensure that you have room, of course.” • What’s Cookin’? • McNasty’s Food Truck • Nacho Pig • Merchant House • Short North Bagel Deli • Martin’s Lemonade • The King’s Nuts and Tea • Greenville Elks • Knights of Columbus • Kona Ice • Bud’s Root Beer • Maw-N-Paw’s Kettle Corn • Lips Smackin’ Good BBQ • Adam’s Rib BBQ • BJ’s Greek Food • Fry Pies and Ice cream • Junior Butterflies Garden Club
