BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com DARKE COUNTY – Treat yourself - and those on your Santa list - with a tasty gift from Darke County this Christmas season. From homemade wines and wine accessories to baking ingredients and old-fashioned bulk Christmas candies, you won’t have to travel far to find some locally produced gifts. The little village of New Weston is home to Harry Birt’s Store, where you’ll be sure to find something to fill those stockings and satisfy your sweet tooth. “We have over 500 varieties of bulk candies, 100 varieties of nuts and we have nuts in the shell,” said Brad Birt. The selections, Birt explained, includes “some old-fashioned, longtime-ago candies” only available during the holidays, including oldtime mix, hard tack, filled nougats and minty selections. During the holidays, Birt said, the store’s “most popular are double dipped chocolate covered peanuts followed by maple peanut clusters.” Harry Birt’s Store also features new varieties of candies mixed in with the traditional. “I’m carrying on what my grandfather and father started,” Birt said of his 98-year-old family business. Working directly with 23 candy manufacturers, Birt does not go through brokerages. “We have

quality candy at a reasonable price,” he noted. So take a trip to northern Darke County and stop in at Harry Birt’s Store, 501 Main St., New Weston, where shoppers can fill up a white paper bag with scoops of candy and nuts from the bulk bins this holiday. Over at Historic Bear’s Mill, 6450 Arcanum-Bear’s Mill Rd., you can build a gift basket of local flours, cornmeal, pancake mixes and syrups for the chef on your list. “We’ve already boxed up some gift boxes with three different pancake mixes and a small maple leaf jar of syrup,” said Sally Rudy, retail manager. Also available in the Bear’s Mill store are gift boxes with coffees as well as a variety of popcorns. The Mill also offers a selection of gourmet foods, including dessert sauces, jams, jellies and baking flours. The Mill’s Christmas preview weekend is currently taking place – Nov. 18-19 - with hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. Sunday. The Mill will be open regular hours for holiday shopping as well, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. The Mill’s Candlelight Walk will be Dec. 1, with a Ladies Evening planned sometime during the first week of December. Call the Mill for the exact date at 548-5112. Sweet Annie’s Cabin helps celebrate season GREENVILLE – This is the time of year that the leaves that burned fiery red and blazed bright oranges and yellows have escaped from the tree branches. We are now waking up to silvery frosted fields. The morning air has turned crisp. And as the garden falls asleep for the winter, our senses are awakened to that special time of year when our hearts turn to giving. Families come together to celebrate the warmth of Christmas. At Sweet Annie’s Cabin they seem to come alive a bit more at the holidays as they start to open the boxes that have been waiting patiently to be disturbed. Sweet Annie’s Cabin invites you to come in and experience all their store has to offer this holiday season. If you enter hoping to find that special decoration, take note of their five decorated Christmas trees. They have a country farmhouse area, a fun, whimsical area decorated with s ‘mores ornaments and gingerbread, a woodland tree decorated with a wildlife theme, plus decor for your mantle, etc., a Victorian themed tree, and in their kitchen area, a sweet little white “Charlie Brown” tree with the prettiest red kitchen ornaments. And as always, they have a nice selection of Christmas

greenery for any décor. If it’s gifts you’re on the hunt for, look no further! Starting with the man in your life, they’ve added a line of very nice matching winter hat, gloves, scarf and sock sets. Or take a walk back to their mancave area where you’ll find some nice choices for the outdoorsman (or indoors-man) on your list. Let’s talk ladies fashion for a bit. They’ve got you covered. Christmas party? Check! Family dinner? Yep! Something to relax in after a black Friday shopping trip? Yes ma’am! And they haven’t even touched that long list of presents you have to buy! Let’s see…a special piece of jewelry? They have it! Winter hats, gloves, scarves? You betcha! Purses? Wallets? Slippers? Boots? Yes, yes, yes, and yes! Plus so much more! Don’t finish that list without checking out their ladies fashion area! Now for those little tikes on that list. Sisters go all out during Yule season

LINDA MOODY CORRESPONDENT lmoody@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE--They’re at it again. Sisters Caren Long and Connie Taulbee are decorating their home – inside and out – for the Christmas season. Since 2009, they have been decorating their home at the northeast corner of Honeysuckle at North Broadway in Greenville, and each year, it seems something new is added. This year, they have put up a lot more blow-ups as well as having put bulbs along their sidewalk. “It’s real pretty at night time,” said Long. “We will be lit up starting Thanksgiving night at dusk for four hours. They will shut of usually at 9:30 p.m. They are on timers.” Their uncle, Dan Hittle, helps with the outside projects. The decorating of the interior of their home took place throughout the month of October. There is a tree in every room of their home. “We usually put up 17 trees, but only put up 13 this year, with six outside,” Long said. Long revealed that as they get older, they have gotten some handy gadgets to use in their decorating. For one tree, all one has to do is blow on a Santa candle and it turns the tree’s lights on or off. Taulbee’s bedroom is decorated in her favorite color, purple. It’s

also Christmas-y in Long’s room, the master bedroom, especially with Santa Claus and other holiday memorabilia. Even both bathrooms are decorated for the yuletide season. Also decorated are their dining room, laundry room, family room (where they spend most of their time), kitchen and a back room. There are even Christmas pillows on the sofas, a Nativity scene in the living room, refrigerator magnets in the kitchen, a carousel under the television, animated Santas and snowmen on the fireplace and other Christmas items in windows. Wreaths, gingerbread items, carolers, and snow globes are among other items that can be seen around the house. Then, on the outside, they have an estimated 10 blow-ups of mostly Santas and snowmen, a Nativity set, and candy canes all around the yard. “Dan and I worked two Saturdays ago to put the lights up,” Long said. “We’ll probably be done in another four days. The kids are coming for Thanksgiving.” The two women didn’t just start decorating when they moved to Greenville; they also did it in their earlier days. The sisters, who are the two eldest children in the Jeffers family, grew up in the Bradford area with five other siblings. They chose to move to Greenville

because they were spending an awful lot of time here taking care of several aging family members by doing their housework, paperwork and laundry. “We came up once a week, when one day Connie said ‘Let’s move up here,’” Long recalled. “I was on the village council two terms in Jamestown and was in a euchre club for 35 years.” “I lived on the farm five years after my husband passed,” Taulbee said. Sears Hometown will continue selling Whirlpool BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybitdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – Greenville’s Sears Hometown store on Russ Road is here to stay – and will continue to sell Whirlpool, Maytag and Kitchenaid appliances. Earlier this month, some news outlets reported confusing information regarding Sears no longer carrying some of these appliances, says Greenville’s Sears Hometown store owner Lavena Marker. It’s confusing, Marker notes. “The Whirlpool product I sell in my store is not provided by the Sears Holdings Corporation mentioned in previous news articles, Marker explains. Marker’s Sears Hometown store is one of 700 independently owned and operated stores across the United States, she said, as part of Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores. Marker opened her Sears Hometown store in July 2001, constructing the building at its

current site at 1220 Russ Road. “I’m here to stay,â€? she said. “Our store operates under an agreement with Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores. And they are the source for the merchandise we sell. Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores have direct relationships with brands in many product categories. Whirlpool is one of those brands. Marker’s store will be open on Black Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will be participating in the annual Sears Hometown & Outlet Stores Make-a-Wish promotion. From now through Dec. 31, customers may make a donation to Make-a-Wish to reach their $1 million goal to grant life-changing wishes to children battling critical illnesses. Customers who donate will be able to take advantage of promotions during the campaign. Besides kitchen and laundry appliances, shoppers in Greenville can ďŹ nd exercise equipment, a

selection of mattresses, tools, and garden/lawn tractors at their Sears Hometown store. Also, appliances not found in stock may be ordered, Marker said. Besides special Black Friday hours, Sears Hometown will be
