Creating memories at Sickels Tree Farm BY RYAN BERRY MANAGING EDITOR editor@earlybirdpaper.com LYNN, Ind. – Many stores have already switched gears and have Christmas decorations in every nook and cranny and holiday music is ringing out through each aisle encouraging its shoppers to be in a festive mood. Many more are waiting until this week to go into full-out holiday mode. On the home-front, a few homeowners have taken advantage of the warmer temperatures in early November to put up their outdoor displays, but many more are waiting until after Thanksgiving to show off their Christmas spirit. While a few Christmas hardcore enthusiasts have already put up their Christmas Tree, Duane and Marcia Sickels of Sickels Tree Farm say their busy season is coming up over the next few weeks. (approximately 25 minutes from Greenville), knows a lot about Christmas, especially the kind of tree that will make your home feel and smell like Christmas until the New Year. They have been growing and selling Christmas Trees for a quarter of a century. With 43-acres of Christmas Trees, the Sickels believe they have the one that is right for your home. Short trees, fat trees, skinny trees and tall trees, the Sickels know you will find one on their lot that fits your home and personality best. Trees top out at 13-feet with most ranging from 6to 7-feet tall. The farm grows its own White Pine, Scotch Pine and Canaan Fir and import Frazier Firs from North Carolina. They work directly with a farm there to ensure they get the freshest trees available. Sickels Tree Farm is much more than an ordinary Christmas Tree lot. They help your family “create memories that will last a lifetime,” said Duane. From the moment you get out of your car and head toward

the gift shop, you’ll realize there is something different about this place. You are greeted by a friendly staff member that will find out what kind of tree you are looking for and will equip you with a cart and a saw. You and your family get to experience what it might have been like in the 1800s when families wondered into the woods searching for the perfect Christmas Tree. Once you find the perfect tree, you get the privilege of cutting it down and putting it on the cart. The Sickels Tree Farm staff will take it from there. They will put it on the shaker to get rid of all of the old and loose needles to prevent them from ending up on your floor and then they will run it through the baler to make it easy to transport. If you need help loading it on your car or in your truck, the staff is more than willing to help. Perhaps you don’t want to do a lot of work, but still want a great tree. Sickels has a great variety of pre-cut trees in their barn to choose from or you can pick one out on the farm and they will cut it down for you. Duane and Marcia agree the two biggest reasons their

Small Business Saturday to support local retailers SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – Started in 2010 by American Express, Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to support their local retailers. Main Street Greenville has been supporting Small Business Saturday – set for Nov. 26, the day after Black Friday – for the past five years, said Main Street Execuctive Director Amber Garrett. “We actually signed up to be a Neighborhood Champion for the entire downtown district,” Garrett said, explaining that Greenville’s local Main Street program has joined in with other downtown revitalization and Main Street programs in support of small businesses and Small Business Saturday. Also, locally, Second National Bank has become a local supporter by hosting the horsedrawn carriage rides that will be available Nov. 26 in the downtown Greenville business district. “Shopping locally not only helps maintain a unique business environment,” Garrett said, “but it also helps keep money local, which is extremely important.” In Darke County, Garrett said, “a lot of people don’t want to travel out of town to shop. If you want those things, you have to support what we have here.” Local business owners also

give back to their community with donations and support of organizations, Garrett said, another plus that comes from a vital locally-owned retail establishment. Small Business Saturday, Garrett believes, is a “great way to support these people. Owning a small business becomes your life. It’s your passion and you want to see it thrive.” In addition to supporting Small Business Saturday, Mainstreet Greenville is again hosting a “Win the Window” campaign through Dec. 15. Shoppers can enter to win by spending money at any of the participating downtown Greenville businesses. A list of participants is available at www.mainstreetgreenville.org. Businesses and organizations who are participating in the campaign have provided merchandise and gift certificates that are on display under the Christmas tree in the Main Street Greenville’s window, located in the Darke County Welcome Center at 421 S. Broadway. Shoppers will get a ticket entry for every $5 they spend at participating downtown businesses, up to a single purchase of $1,000. There’s no limit to how many times you can shop to enter. The winner will be announced at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 18 at the Main Street office. You are not required to be present to win.

Brown preparing for 24th year of lights GREENVILLE – Dick Brown began putting up decorations at his home three weeks ago and said he will be ready to flip the switch soon for his 24-year Christmas tradition. Brown puts up all 100,000 lights himself, which takes approximately one month. He usually begins in October and finished prior to Thanksgiving. Brown gives out full-sized candy canes to those who come to the front door, 5:3011 p.m. each night, except for a few nights that he is out of town or not at home. They give out about 2,000 candy canes each year. Most people in the area already know where Brown’s house is located, but for those who don’t or are new to the area, you can find the light display at the corner of Requarth and Jaysville-St. John Roads (5480 Requarth Road) just outside of Greenville. Last year, thanks to George Mitterman, Brown got a drone’seye-view of the Christmas lights at his house. According to Brown, this is the first aerial view he has seen of the lights.

Shopping local keeps dollars local SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com DARKE COUNTY – If you are in need of a unique gift on Santa’s list, Darke County offers just what you’re looking for. “We have everything you can ďŹ nd on Black Friday for the most part here in Darke County,â€? said Matt Staugler, Darke County Visitor’s Bureau executive director. “If you’re looking for furniture you can shop Hansbargers or Francis Furniture for example.â€? Add to that the local food products and art by area artists showcased at Bear’s Mill Store and Gallery, homemade honey from Michael Anthony’s in Versailles, a bottle of wine tucked into a gift basket from one of the county’s several wineries, which produce their products from homegrown grapes or a brand new mixer from KitchenAid Experience in downtown Greenville. There’s also a variety of gift passes available for Darke County spots like Garst Museum and the Bradford Railroad Museum, Staugler noted. A tourism and economics report revealed Darke County enjoying $65.5 million in tourism dollars for the year 2014, Staugler said. “That’s $65.5 million just from visitors - people who have heard about what we have

here.â€? Staugler credits the collaboration between the visitor’s bureau and Main Street Greenville for much of the success the county has seen as far as tourism support of local events, shopping venues and restaurants, as well as the “quality of work from our businesses. Our organizations do a lot to foster that growth within our communities.â€? Staugler also shared ďŹ gures from a November 2011 report from Business Insider showing $45 out of every $100 spent with local retailers stays local while only $13 out of $100 remains local when people shop big box retailers. “Shopping locally is super important to our economy, Staugler believes. “It’s important for the dollars you spend to stay local.â€? As you start checking your holiday shopping lists, visit the Darke County Visitor’s Bureau website at www.visitdarkecounty.org/ for a list of locally-owned shopping options. Upcoming events planned that could include local shopping are the Bear’s Mill Christmas Open House and Candlelight Walk and MainStreet Greenville’s First Friday, both on Dec. 2 and Walking in a Winter Wonderland at Shawnee Prairie on Dec. 3, Staugler said.

A winter tour at Versailles Area Museum VERSAILLES – In celebration of the holiday season, the Versailles Area Museum has transformed into a world of Christmas delights for visitors to enjoy. Come and enjoy seeing Art Gaier’s collection of fantastic antique bicycles which has now been held over by the overwhelming interest, and now in a winter setting. You’ll see their 1900 kitchen a busy place to be wrapping presents and to pause and read the Christmas story. See how the old mercantile store was your place to shop. Many paintings by local artist, Harris Begin’s winter paintings are throughout the museum for you to enjoy. Touches of Christmas will be found throughout the museum; featuring something special in

each of their 20 rooms. Thanks to Judy Shappie there will again be a unique display of Santa through the years. Don’t forget to see the wonderful toys made by local carpenter, C.F. (or as locals remember “Pittsy”) Pittsenbarger and painted by his wife Esther, a beloved music teacher in Versailles for many years. Of course advertising for businesses long gone are displayed along with a trip to Martin’s Department Store. The 1990’s will be remembered as they hope to offer on Sundays in December the “Sounds of Christmas” produced by Towne & Country Players on the big screen in the Military Room. Their show stopper this Christmas season is called “A Sweet Treat” the story of M&M’s. You will be amazed at the

Hanging of the Greens at Lewisburg church LEWISBURG – Everyone is invited to the seventh annual “Hanging of the Greens” service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lewisburg on the first Sunday in Advent, Nov. 27. This dramatic service begins in silence and darkness as those in attendance await the “Light of Christ” symbolizing Christ’s coming into a world of darkness 2,000 years ago and into the darkness of our hearts today. Once the Christ Candle is in place, there are readings explaining the history of all of our favorite symbols of Christmas and congregational singing of carols. By the end of the service, the sanctuary is dressed in its Christmas finery and hearts are prepared to celebrate the true meaning of the season. The “Hanging of the Greens”

is a wonderful family event with opportunities during the service for children to come forward to help decorate the tree and participate in the lighting of the Advent Candle. The service, which begins at 7 p.m. and lasts approximately one hour, will be preceded by a Soup and Sandwich Supper in the multi-purpose room. There is no charge but donations will be gladly accepted to cover the cost of the meal. Pre-service music will be presented in the sanctuary from 6:30 to 7 p.m. by local musicians. The church is located directly across the street from Tri-County North Schools. Parking is available on both the Commerce Street side and the Main Street side of the building with the multi-purpose building located on the west side. Everyone is welcome. Dress is casual.

Ideas given for Thanksgiving leftovers COLUMBUS – Thanksgiving is a time that revolves around food, family and friends – with the turkey serving as the showstopper. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, more than 90 percent of Americans will gobble up turkey this holiday season. That adds up to more than 600 million pounds of turkey. “A turkey at Thanksgiving is the epitome of the holiday,” said Jim Chakeres, executive vice president of the Ohio Poultry Association (OPA). “However, for many Ohioans, the best part of the dinner happens the day after when the leftovers begin.” Here are a few recommendations from the Ohio turkey experts on how to store and prepare leftover turkey to its fullest potential: Storage: Make sure to remove the stuffing and carve any extra turkey meat from the bones. Leftovers should be stored in shallow containers to reduce air and oxygen exposure. To prevent any possible foodborne illnesses, all leftovers should be refrigerated or frozen within two hours of cooking. Shelf life: Leftover turkey and stuffing should be consumed within three to four days. While gravy lasts for only one to two days in the refrigerator. Cooked turkey can be kept in the freezer for three to four months. Try new recipes: Holiday dinners will likely leave hosts with mounds of leftover turkey. This lean meat is low in fat and an excellent source of protein, so don’t let it go to waste. Try making Turkey Sweet Potato Hash with Baked Eggs or Turkey Vegetable

Hash Brown Quiche to create great meals using the turkey leftovers. For additional recipe ideas and cooking videos, visit www.OhioEggs.com. “With current health discussions, many families seek nutritious, tasty options to fill our stomachs,” said Chakeres. “Turkey is a naturally lean source of protein and B vitamins that can complement other meal options after the holiday passes, while pleasuring your tastebuds.” Ohio ranks ninth in the nation in turkey production with more than 209 million pounds of turkey produced. The value of turkey produced in Ohio in 2015 was more than $169 million. For more information on storage, turkey recipes or nutritional benefits, visit the OPA website at www.ohioturkey.com or www.serveturkey.org.

ovenproof skillet. Add onion; cook 2-3 minutes, stirring often. Add garlic, and cook an additional 2-3 minutes, again stirring often. Add turkey and potatoes and remaining olive oil, continue to cook until golden brown and heated through. Mix ketchup, mustard, thyme, parsley and water in a small bowl. Stir ketchup mixture into turkey/potatoes. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Reduce heat to medium, continue to stir for an additional 4-5 minutes. Make 4 “wells” into hash mixture. Break an egg into a small bowl and transfer egg to the “well.” Repeat until 4 wells are filled with an egg. Transfer skillet to 350-degree, preheated oven. Bake 20-22 minutes, or until egg whites are firmly set and yolks are to your desired degree of doneness. Serves 4.
