Darke County clubs to celebrate Ohio 4-H Week March 2-9 BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com DARKE COUNTY – Darke County 4-H is gearing up for another successful year. The county will observe Ohio 4-H Week from March 2-9, with its annual Spring Kick-Off and Recognition Program at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3 at All Seasons Place. According to Rhonda Williams, county extension educator, the recognition will honor 4-H Clubs, members and adult volunteers. The entire month of March is busy for Darke County 4-H as its members will celebrate Ohio 4-H Week with a skating party from 6:30-9 p.m. at The Skate Place in Greenville. Williams will be continuing the 4-H STEM in the Classroom activities, including Go Plants! for third-graders at Arcanum, Wonderful World of Worms for second-graders at Arcanum and Breads of the Harvest for Greenville third- and fourth-graders and Mississinawa Valley fifth-graders. The Hands Across the Darke 4-H Club has planned several service projects to benefit local community

efforts, including collecting nonperishable items and cleaning supplies for food pantries and the homeless shelter, bird food and suet for the Darke County Park District and cat/dog food/supplies for the animal shelter. The club also is accepting donations to include in care packets for cancer patients - puzzle books and unflavored lotions and lip balms. Also, Williams said, monetary donations toward the Darke County 4-H Camp are still being accepted. As far as new projects for the 2019 year, Greenville native and former county 4-H member Molly Hunt’s new project “Can You Dig It?” will be available for those interested in geology. Named an Ohio 4-H Teen last year, Hunt will be inducted into the Ohio 4-H Teen Hall of Fame at the end of March. Another new project will be a graphic design project, Williams said. “These projects are new areas for our 4-H members,” Williams said. The deadline for enrollment for 2019 is April 1, Williams said, adding “4-H is open to any youth ages 5 and in kindergarten as of January 1 until they

reach age 19. We are the largest youth organization in the country, with about six million members nationwide.” During 2018, Williams said, the county had 1,141 members enrolled in 43 clubs with about 230 adult volunteers.

For more information about the county’s 4-H program, including how to join one of the county’s clubs, call the Darke County Extension office at 5485215 or visit their website at darke.osu. edu.

Huffman legislation pushes hemp program COLUMBUS—State Senators Steve Huffman (R-Tipp City) and Brian Hill (R-Zanesville) recently introduced legislation that would create an industrial hemp program in Ohio administered by the Department of Agriculture. The legislation clarifies that hemp and hemp derived products, including CBD oil may be sold legally in Ohio. “It is important to understand that hemp is not marijuana, it is much more versatile and lacks an appreciable amount of THC to cause any psychotropic effects,” said Huffman. “This is an incredible opportunity for our farmers to help diversify their crops by allowing them to grow legal hemp.” With the recent passing of the 2018 Federal Farm Bill, industrial hemp has been removed from the list of scheduled substances banned by the federal government and can now be grown as a commodity crop throughout the United States. “This is an exciting opportunity for farmers to expand the crops

they plant,” said Hill. “Farmers can rotate hemp to improve soil health while earning more profit than many traditional cover crops. I’m eager to see all the ways that Ohio will benefit from this legislation.” Many states have adopted a hemp pilot program, permitted by federal law, so that farmers in their jurisdictions could begin planting and harvesting hemp and so the hemp could be used in over 25,000 commercial products including feed, fiber, biofuels, clothing and plastic. “Farmers are always looking for new options to diversify their operations,” said Adam Sharp, Executive Vice President of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. “We applaud Senators Hill and Huffman for introducing legislation to help bring industrial hemp to Ohio and to allow farmers to explore the potential of this quickly growing market opportunity.” This legislation will now be referred to a Senate committee for further consideration.

The goal of the workshop, Custer said, is to help farmers focus on critical topics that can help them not only get the most bang for their buck, but also raise the profit potential of

their farms. “We’ll offer producers a look at what the latest research shows as they work towards maximizing corn crop yields in an economical fashion,” he said. “Producers will be making some critical decisions this winter as they buy products to set up and plant their crops this spring. “Offering this workshop now will give them time to digest some key production information before they start to get their corn planted in April.” The workshop is taught by OSU

Mike Palmer wins tractor pulling class at nationals BY LINDA MOODY CORRESPONDENT lmoody@earlybirdpaper.com GREENVILLE – Two Greenville men placed high in the 51st annual National Farm Machinery Show’s National Farm Machinery Championship Truck and Tractor Pull Feb. 12-15 in Louisville, Ky. Mike Palmer in the Red Avenger ďŹ nished ďŹ rst in the light weight Pro Stock 85-pound class, while Wes Spencer came in ďŹ fth in the Bush Wacker. Four classes showed for the four days in Kentucky. Palmer’s and Spencer’s class competed on Saturday, the last day. Palmer, who said his International 986 tractor pulled 244.19 feet for the win, indicated he has competed there before. “I ďŹ nished fourth last year and placed several times before,â€? said the 43-year-old. “We make family trips out of it.â€? He said a lot of people, including Darke countians, watched the event that is held indoors. “The pulls are done on red clay, and after they’re over, they scrape the clay outâ€? he said.

Palmer, who estimates he competes in pulls approximately 35 times a year, said he has been competing for 25 years, ever since he was 17 or 18. It was his father, Ken Palmer of Greenville, who got him started. Ken himself was a puller even before Mike was born and brought home many awards for his achievements. “Back then they didn’t have much of a point series, Mike said. A director of the Darke County Tractor Pullers Association, Mike said he competes in tractor pulls in Preble and Champaign County as well as in Wayne County, Ind., not to mention the Great Darke County Fair. He said he plans to go to the Spring Fever Pull on March 2 at the Preble County Fairgrounds. A 1994 graduate of Greenville High School, he is also the son of the late Cathy (McKibben) Palmer. He married Lula Boomershine nine years ago after they met at work at Whirlpool in Greenville, where he runs a CNC machine. They have an 8-year-old son Charlie and her son, Ian Bailey.

Mike, who also works on the hobby farm with his father, said they were blessed with good weather at the recent show. “I would like to thank my dad for letting me become involved in it, Mike said. “I’m going to keep doing it. I want to thank all of my Darke County neighbors for their support and help when I needed them. It takes a lot of work. Mark Bingham and I built both frames out of his shop. He’s a heck of a welder and so is his dad, Jack. I also want to thank Jason Laux and the Singer family.

Local grower takes 2nd contest ARCANUM – Congratulations to Rob Schmidt of Arcanum, who recently won second place in the AA No-Till/StripTill Non-Irrigated division of the 2018 National Corn Growers Association’s (NCGA) Corn Yield Contest. Schmidt won with Pioneer(r) P1197AM(tm) brand corn, which yielded 284.31 bushels per acre. Schmidt earned one of the 189 state titles won by growers planting Pioneer(r) brand products. Pioneer growers took home more than 45 percent of the state awards, confirming that Pioneer brand products can shine throughout the nation. “We offer our congratulations to growers who placed in the NCGA competition. Every year, the industry continues to see growers across the country succeed in this competition, and we are proud to see so many growers succeed with Pioneer brand

genetics,” said Ryan Myers, Pioneer Corn Category Lead, Corteva Agriscience(tm), Agriculture Division of DowDuPont. The NCGA Corn Yield Contest is an annual U.S. competition among corn growers with the goal of capitalizing on the high genetic yield potential of today’s corn hybrids. It also encourages the development of sustainable, new and innovative management practices that result in higher yield potential. Growers compete in six corn production classes: two for non-irrigated, two for no-till/strip till non-irrigated, one for no-till/strip till irrigated and one for irrigated acres. For a complete list of national winners, state winners, yield totals and products, visit www.pioneer.com/ncga. To learn more about the National Corn Growers Association, visit www.ncga. com.
