Hunt named Ohio 4-H Teen of the Year

BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com DARKE COUNTY – Molly Hunt was sitting in class at The Ohio State University when she received a text message from Rhonda Williams, Darke County’s 4-H Extension Educator. “I sent her a text and told her to check her email,” Williams said. That email was letting Hunt know she’d been selected as the Ohio 4-H Teen of the Year. “I didn’t have a clue about the award,” Hunt said recently. “It’s pretty prestigious and it’s an honor to receive. I’m very excited and humbled to be receiving it.” Williams said the award, which will be presented to Hunt on March 10 during the Ohio 4-H Conference in Columbus, is relatively new for the Ohio 4-H program. “It’s the first time we’ve nominated someone for this award. Molly has been extremely active in county-based and at the national level of 4-H,

and certainly deserved to be recognized for her participation,” Williams said. Hunt, 18, a freshman at OSU, is majoring in earth science with a double minor in political science and 4-H Extension education. “I would like to work as a 4-H specialist for natural resources education with a goal of eventually working as a paleontologist at the Smithsonian Institute in D.C.,” says Hunt. In her final year of 4-H (she received a ‘grace’ year due to how her birthday falls), Hunt said she has “some big plans.” “I just got home from the National Youth Summit for Healthy Living in Washington, D.C.,” she said, where she was one of four teens from across the nation to help organize and facilitate activities, and in April

will be in D.C. again for the National 4-H Conference. “This summer I will be very active in camps and lots of other 4-H activities. It’s going to be a busy summer, but exciting,” Hunt said. Some of the excitement possibly will include a trip to Georgia as a 4-H liaison with the Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council. “Some of them (Georgia 4-Hers) will be coming to Columbus during our state conference,” she said. “We’re working on getting some Ohio 4-H members to Georgia. One of our goals is to reach out and make connections with other states’ 4-H programs.” Hunt also said a group from Oklahoma will be attending the Ohio conference in Columbus. As a 12-year member of the Darke County Genesis 4-H Club, Hunt has served as a club officer, including historian and vice president. She’s been a county camp counselor, was a member of the junior fair board.

a member of the Darke County 4-H Committee and was crowned the 2016 Junior Fair Queen. She’s also serving on the Ohio 4-H Health Heroes and on the Ohio Teen Council as Darke County’s representative. She also created the county’s Clover Confidence BFF program, an annual event that provides role modeling and self-confidence activities for girls in grades 5-8. Hunt also has had the opportunity to review and write a couple 4-H project books. She reviewed Your Thoughts Matter, a project about mental health. “I reviewed the project book and worked with the author to make some changes,” Hunt explained. This coming fall, Hunt’s own project book will be available for Ohio’s 4-Hers and is titled 4-H Rocks – a geology project. The daughter of Brian and Teresa Hunt, the college freshman said she’s doing fine with juggling her class load and her last year in 4-H. “It’s crazy busy, but I wouldn’t have my life any other way,” Hunt said.

4-H CLUB NEWS Ansonia 4-H

The Ansonia 4-H Club met Feb. 13 at Ansonia Methodist Church. President Grace Dapore called the meeting to order. The pledges were led by Vivian Dapore. Roll call was taken by Secretary Macy Dapore, and the members responded with their favorite color. A total of 20 members were present. Treasurer Logan Warner gave the treasurer’s report. In new business, the 4-H kickoff is on March 4 and the club wishes that any family that can go should go. Joann Fabrics is giving 50 percent off fabrics for any 4-H member that is taking a sewing project. In other news, they were coming up with ideas on where upcoming meetings should be held. The next meeting will be March 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Squad House in Ansonia. Enrollment forms are due on April 1; please bring them to the next meeting or turn them into Lisa Mayo before April 1. Allison Warner, reporter

Kountry Kids

On Feb. 12, Kountry Kids 4-H club held a meeting at United Methodist church. This was the first meeting of 2018. Kountry Kids is doing a flower fundraiser with many different varieties of flowers and vegetables. They will only be selling them until March 1. Delivery date is March 7 in the coliseum at the fairgrounds. The club has started preparing for skillathon. “We are committed to doing more to be the best. We expect all of you to do awesome in skillathon,” say the advisers. There was a motion to work at the humane society. “More community service,” said the president of the club. The club plans to do Trash Bash on April 22 and can only hope that it doesn’t rain to avoid getting wet like in previous years. The club will have a showmanship clinic on June 9 at the fairgrounds. The officers are still getting used to their positions and will continue to be great. Casey Lewis, reporter

Campaign to find new members GREENVILLE – Are you a Farm Bureau member? You may have been asked that question recently as the Darke County Farm Bureau membership campaign is in full swing. Olivia McDade, membership chair for Darke County Farm Bureau said, “Our membership goal is to achieve five percent active member gain in Darke County and this goal is important because membership is the reason Farm Bureau exists and the funds from dues are used to enhance the support of agriculture at our county, state, and national level.” Some of the benefits of a Farm Bureau membership include: * Participation in the legislative process: Members collaborate on issues they deem important to shape local, state and federal regulations affecting their community. * A subscription to Our Ohio magazine featuring recipes and information about the farm families who grow our food. * Grow and Know events: Members can host or attend onfarm dining events, food tours, how-to seminars and other learning activities.

* Landowner education: Farm Bureau staff provides the latest information on oil and gas leasing activity, property tax issues, private property rights and more. * Property Protection Program: OFBF offers a $2500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction for felony crimes committed on a member’s property. * Savings: Members receive discounts on some Nationwide insurance products, Ford vehicles, Grainger products, John Deere, and Case IH tractors, plus Ohio Farm Bureau’s new Health Benefits Plan and much more. For more information, or to join, contact the county office at 937335-1471 or visit GrowWithFB.org. There are currently 1,020 Farm Bureau members in Darke County. Members include farmers, gardeners, food and wine enthusiasts, teachers and more. “Building the Identity”

Versailles celebrates National FFA Week VERSAILLES – Versailles FFA Chapter celebrated National FFA Week Feb. 17-24. The theme for this year was, “I Can. We Will.” The focus of National FFA Week is to tell the community and the country about the great opportunities available through FFA. As a part of National FFA Week, Versailles FFA members planned special events. One of the focuses of the Versailles FFA National FFA Week was promoting Ag throughout the school. The FFA chapter spread the word about Ag to the staff and students at school by posting facts around the school, giving gifts in staff mailboxes, and asking Ag/FFA questions on the announcements with a Subway gift card awarded to the winner. Versailles FFA members also conducted a teacher breakfast and

a K-2 coloring contest to continue to involve the staff and students at school. For FFA members, the chapter hosted a member breakfast to thank fruit sellers, play FFA bingo during class, and held their monthly meeting with chapter officer elections. The members are also looked forward to a classroom visit from their Ohio State FFA Secretary Koleson McCoy. On Feb. 19, the chapter had the opportunity to attend an OSU Pesticide Training hosted by OSU or members could attend an Emerging Ag Conference at Wright State hosted by the Farm Bureau. The Versailles FFA also participated in several community outreach programs throughout the week including PALS, Companions, Middle School Ag, Junior High FFA,

and making blankets for Children’s Hospital with other school clubs. Towards the end of the week, the Versailles FFA chapter recognized FFA scholarship winners during lunch. Versailles FFA members are the leaders of tomorrow and dedicated to community service activities like canned food drives, toys for tots, and nursing home visits. Whether it’s working with elementary children or serving as a chapter officer, FFA members make a positive difference on those around them. FFA members are our future engineers, scientists, teachers, and producers. One of every five Americans is employed in the food, fiber and natural resources industries, and FFA members are preparing for one of those 300 careers in agriculture.

Versailles FFA gives toys, blankets and fruit VERSAILLES – On Jan. 20, the Versailles FFA chapter visited multiple places in the surrounding area to donate toys, blankets and extra fruit as part of their extension of spreading cheer. The first stop on the trip was to the Ronald McDonald House in Dayton connected with Children’s Hospital. FFA members took toys and blankets to the residents, and they aided in cleaning the building. They helped clean windows, mop the floor, and assisted in vacuuming and dusting. The chapter next went next door to Children’s Hospital to

donate remaining toys from their recent Toy Drive. In addition to the toys from the drive, the chapter also brought blankets they had made from their Blanket the World event. The last stop was at St. Vincent DePaul. Again, they delivered toys, blankets, and extra fruit from the local fruit sales. Members who attended and assisted were Ben Albers, Marcus Berger, Faith Wilker, Franklin Shimp, Kennedy Hughes, Kimberly Winner, Kayla Bohman, Laura Wuebker, Elliot George, Tori Wuebker, Haley Mangen, Anna Barlage, Deanna Hesson, and Xavier Grillot.
