New members added to Dozen Club

ARCANUM – Being a member of the Tour de Donut’s Dozen Club is a prestigious honor that riders aspire to achieve. The 2014 event saw its first female member of the club join. Kylie Purkey, of Indianapolis, Ind. set the female record with 19 donuts eaten during the tour, a record she still holds. A men’s donut eating record was set in 2013 when Dean McCombs, of Harrod, ate 26 donuts. Records for the Double D were set in 2014 when Julie Suever consumed 12 donuts in the women’s division and Yasir Salem devoured 48 donuts for the men. The tandem record was set with Matt and Ben Bond, of Bellbrook eating 26 donuts. They were the first participants to ever finish with a negative time. The women were one shy of a dozen ladies joining the Dozen Club in 2015. Achieving the honor were Jolene DeFrank (15), Diane LeMay (15), Cathrine Harshman (14), Elizabeth Hemmeger (14), Leah Joly (14),

Kris Thompson (14), Trace Devore (12), Kathryn Huter (12), Cecelia Orr (12), Danielle Toth (12) and Jennifer Zentz (12). He doubled the mark set by second place donut eaters, Matt Bond and Chris Marks. Filling up on fun and donuts since 2007 ARCANUM – The Tour de Donut in Darke County continues to increase in size and popularity. Since starting in 2007 in Greenville at the Darke County Fairgrounds, the event has grown from 106 riders to over 1600 riders in 2013. In 2015, the event drew 2,008 participants. The Tour de Donut is a time raced. The faster a bicyclist rides the better chance he or she has of winning the race. However, there is one little caveat that makes this race different from most other races and gives novice bicyclists a chance of winning. Riders can lower their time by eating donuts. Each donut is worth ďŹ ve-minutes off their time. If it takes longer than ďŹ ve minutes to eat a donut then the rider should probably rethink their strategy. The record for eating donuts is held by

Dean McCombs, of Harrod, who ate 26 donuts in 2013. The female record is 19; set by Kylie Purkey, also set in 2013. The Double D records are Julie Suever (female) 12 donuts and Yasir Salem (male) 48 donuts. Matt and Ben Bond, of Bellbrook, set the Tandem record with 26 donuts. In its history, this tasty tour has only run out of donuts once. In 2011, the supply truck stopped to assist an injured rider and the ďŹ rst donut stop ran out of donuts for a short time. Course will stay the same for 2016 ARCANUM – The Tour de Donut is a unique bicycle event, where your ability to eat donuts is just as important as your ability to ride your bicycle. The event is a timed bicycle event where riders visit donut stops during the course and eat donuts. For each donut the rider eats during the ride (and keeps down) they have five minutes deducted from their ride time. In 2015, the course was all new and organizers have decided they will continue with that course this year. This year’s route centers near Lewisburg with donut stops in Gordon, Lewisburg and at Kennedy Vineyards. The Glazer is also returning for the 2016 race. The Glazer is a special donut stop with a unique donut that is worth a 10 minute time deduction. The fifth annual Donut Mini will return with one donut stop on a 15 mile course. The mini will offer its own awards just like the

longer distance while offering an alternative to those who are concerned about the full route allowing younger riders and families to take part in the fun. The 10th annual Tour de Donut 30 mile distance will offer two donut stops and is for those looking for a longer ride. The third annual Double D challenge is a 64 mile ride for experienced cyclist and offers three donut stops and will include hills! The largest free kids’ event in Darke County will take place at 8 a.m. on George Street. The first 120 kids will receive a free t-shirt. All kids will receive a finisher medal and all the donuts and milk they care to eat. Prizes are awarded in age group. 2015 was a complete sell out with 2,008 riders from 28 states registered for the ride. For more information, visit www.thetourdedonut.com.
