Most of us look forward to spring. I know for me the bright natural colors, warm weather, and longer days are signs that the winter months are over. But, sometimes things don't go according to plan when dealing with Mother Nature or really life in general. As we know springtime in Oklahoma is filled with many ups and downs. Often we will see one warm day followed by three or four cold ones! Add in Oklahoma storms and allergies…It is safe to say that the constant change can definitely affect our mood and plans. At some point in the spring we will have plans to enjoy the outdoors but the forecast will stop us in our tracks. Here is a little reminder. What is important during these times of unpredictable temperatures and sometimes health is intentionally staying positive and present. After all, change is inevitable. We can ALWAYS count on things (most definitely the weather in Oklahoma) to change. How we approach our circumstances is the most important thing to think about when change and/or uncertainty occurs. Sometimes it is easy to miss the beauty in daily life when we get too busy trying to control our circumstances and not being present because of it. I would like to invite you to join me in this mindset and smile! Enjoy what you can, but remember that no matter how springtime plays out, the summer will be here before you know it. And it too will arrive with a choice... to be joyous or inauspicious.

As the seasons are changing and winter turns into spring, we begin to see the change and growth of tiny roots and sprigs blooming into tulips and greenery of the like. The fresh spring air is overflowing with smells of rain that are sweet and soft mixed with a floral scent. With all of the senses engaged it can bring a bit of nostalgia, remembering running around on the playground as a child or resting your chin on the window seal waiting for the rain- rain to go away and come back again another day. LEGO BRICK BUDDIES CLUB
Sand Springs Public Schools has an amazing amount of after school programs available for Sandites. This magazine issue, were diving into the Lego Brick Buddies Club. At the beginning of the year, students in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade applied. A maximum of 30 students who were in good academic standing, good class behavior and no more than 2 absences/ tardies in a grading period were selected. The program is coordinated by Barbie Jackson, Limestone Technology Academy’s STEAM Teacher. The 30 LEGO enthusiasts meet once a week for a two hour period. The students, affectionately named, LEGO Brick Buddies, are working together in teams practicing their communication skills, following algorithms, and fostering their creative side to complete a common goal: Create a city composed of LEGO kits and also free builds. This program is FREE, yes FREE through a $500.00 grant received from the Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance sponsored by NORDAM and #PoweredByFlightNight. Parents will be invited to see the completed project which will include: a movie theater, school, hospital, pet clinic, city hall, amusement park, homes, fire and police stations, transportation, restaurants, and more!

THE MAGIC OF A GOOD BOOK When was the last time you had a chance to sit down in your living room chair, snuggle up with a soft blanket, and open the pages of a recommended book? Only to find yourself there a couple of hours later hands quickly turning through the pages your eyes can’t read fast enough - your mind can’t soak up the story quick enough, it’s just. that. good. I think we can all admit that although we have had more time at home than ever, we still find ourselves too busy to include reading into our routine lives. With the changing of the calendar into March this month brings us National Reading Month. 31 days of encouragement to block out a time slot on your calendar to open a good book and fill your mind with inspiration, imagination, intellect. Of course when we are speaking about books, we should take a moment to place the spotlight on a national reading institution, libraries. In fact we are lucky enough to have two right here in Sand Springs. The first free modern public library was opened in 1883 in Peterborough, New Hampshire. This was the first institution funded by a local government with the one purpose of creating a free library open to all.
The Charles Page Library and Pratt Library are filled top to bottom with reading, learning and engaging opportunities for any age and anyone in the Sandite community. Charles Page Library is an exciting mix of oldfashioned laid-back customer service and exciting technology. With the computers and laptops for in-library use, a meeting room that can hold up to 70, and artwork from local artist Lisa Reagan the Charles Page Library is a hub for all things reading, literacy, and learning. They even host local events like Take Your Child to the Library Day

MARCH IS NATIONAL READING MONTH •What do I want to read? •Why do you think it’s important to read? •What was the last book I read? •What was the very First book I read? and provide ample reading suggestions through their Facebook page. The Pratt library was established in 1963 named after developer Harry Pratt. The community continues to grow and prosper while preserving the family friendly atmosphere. The library does have computers and a meeting room for community use. Reflecting on national reading month could bring about a couple of questions and perhaps some healthy conversation at work or the dinner table. (See above) For some of us the very first book we read was one written by none other than Dr. Seuss himself. This March Dr. Seuss would have been 118 years old. Those tongue twister paragraphs have been
spoken on the lips of generations for bedtime stories, classroom reading sessions, and used as a learning tool to teach kids how to read! What an amazing legacy to leave behind! We hope that national reading month encourages you to dive deep into the many mystifying worlds of dragons, princesses, romances, cultures and so much more. You can find many new books by visiting the Charles Paige Library or Pratt Library with your whole family! You can sign up for a library card easily in person at both locations and check out books that your whole family will enjoy!

SPRING RECYCLING The Met Recycling center is making a difference - both in caring for our Mother Earth, and in caring for people. The Met depots around the Tulsa area are operated by nearly 75 adults with disabilities. The Met employs these adults to give them a working oppurtunity and something to look forward to. The depots take many items that are not able to be taken via curbside pick
It’s easy breezy to recycle at The Met depots! They help you unload and sort your items, so all you need to do is load it into your car and get it to the depot and the associates will help unload it. The depots are also not locked
up, including cardboard, glass, paper,
after-hours, so if you need to make an after hours drop off you can, and it

Recycling's Impact: Recycling makes a huge impact on the planet, and there's still a lot more to be done. The Met's mission is to keep as much out of land fills as possible, as well as bring awareness to how much waste accumulation individuals have. Sandites contributed to The Met in Sand Springs collecting 2,286,718 lbs of cardboard in 2021 and 6,768 lbs of plastic grocery-type bags. Fun fact, 90 bags = 1 lb, so Sandites recycled over 600,000 plastic bags last year! The recycled bags are sent to Arkansas to be made into plastic lumber that is used for playground equipment and more! Keep it up, Sandites! 18 WeAreSandSprings.com | March 2022

Every Sandite deserves to
have the Prom of their dreams this Spring. That’s why We Are Sand Springs, Sand Springs Community Services and River Stone Cleaners have all partnered together for another Prom Formal Drive. The Sand Springs Prom Formal Drive was born from the need within our school and the intention of donations directly helping students to have a positive experience at Prom. During your high school years there are few events that live up to Prom - the lights, the attire,
the dinner and dancing! It’s time, once again Sandites, to open up those closet doors and pull out your gently used formal attire to give a high schooler a one of a kind Prom experience. During the months of March and April you can drop off formal attire ranging from suits to dresses and even shoes at Boulder Coffee or Riverstone Dry Cleaning & Laundry. The items will then be cleaned and delivered to Sand Springs Community Services (SSCS). SSCS will work with Sand Springs Public Schools to deliver these items to the hands of students that need them! How did you start your day? Well, to be honest, because of the threat of the winter storm, the very first thing I looked at today was my phone and I checked the weather.
What's the one thing you love about Sand Springs? One of the things I love about Sand Springs is I like the history. I'm going to give you a nerd answer, I like the multi generational elements of Sand Springs. I like that we've got little kids all the way up to very wise older adults and everything inbetween.
How would you describe your job? My job is a day filled with distractions. We're prepared to serve for the folks that are the most vulnerable in any situation that they might have brought to us. And so we plan certainly to help the folks with their food needs and their utility requests and clothing requests. But we honestly never know when someone comes to the door what they're going to bring to us. So I like to look at it as just a day full of variety.

For those of us who are animal lovers, taking care
and ensuring high quality of life for our pets is top priority! And that’s exactly what we heard from Tracy Arvidson, the Animal Welfare Coordinator at the Sand Springs Animal Welfare Center. The Animal Welfare staff are committed to protecting citizens and their pets by investigating animal issues as well as animal neglect. Dogs and cats placed in the City’s care are treated humanely and if possible, offered for adoption if not claimed by their owners.

“The main volunteer opportunities we have are at the shelter,” said Tracy. “We have volunteers that come in the morning and the afternoon to let the dogs out so they have plenty of time in the yard. We also have volunteers that I call Kitten Cuddlers, that can come and work on socializing with the cats. And we have a couple of volunteers that will come and grab a dog to go on a run. Fostering is also a major way that volunteers can serve.”

While spending time with these adorable animals might not be for everyone, Tracy let us know about other ways to donate. “We have an Amazon Wishlist and a donation portal on our website for monetary donations,” said Tracy. You will find items like Kuranda dog and cat beds, toys and fun treats that bring a pleasant environment for animals in the shelter. If you, or someone you know, is interested in donating, volunteering, fostering or adopting a pet, please visit Sand Springs Animal Welfare or make a call to set up a time to come in and meet the animals! Because caring for Sandites and our pets are the top priorities of Animal Welfare, we encourage you to read through the city's ordinances about animal vaccinations, spay/neuter, walking on a leash and how to best keep your community and animals safe. Classical, acoustic-electrical, bass, fender, you probably recognize these names - they are guitars of all types and styles. Something we bet you didn’t know is that April is National Guitar Month! So we are here to celebrate our local musicians and inspire you to dive deeper into the world of music! Right here in Sand Springs we have a family of musicians who are lighting the musical flames of so many - Firey Music. Firey Music and Lessons is a locally owned and operated music store that offers instrument and voice lessons among other services. This well rounded group of teachers can accommodate any genre of music that Sandites desire to learn. They truly believe that the gift of music will transform and change your life! We want to give a big shout out to Tina Bill of Firey Music for connecting us with these amazing musicians/ students to help us celebrate such a special month! Jace White, a guitar student of Austin Donoh, has been taking lessons at Firey for several years. “His love for a guitar and dedication has not gone without notice”, says Tina at Firey Music. Read as Jace tells us a little bit about his experience as he has learned guitar over the years.
“The reason why I started playing guitar was because my grandmother played and she went on to play, so when my grandfather first bought my guitar I worked very hard to be good enough to play with her. While learning the instrument, I found it very fun and joyful. Music has gotten me out of dark times, made me feel happy, and the overall experience of music is just beautiful.”
Along with guitar lessons, Firey Music offers equipment to rent or purchase for local students, repair and maintenance for guitars and other musical instruments, and various types of lessons. We had the opportunity to talk with Mikayla Bradford, a voice student at Firey Music and local Sandite! Isn’t it so fun to see the young lives of Sandites blooming through their artistic talents!? We have one more Sandite story to share with you, Jaxon Jeffers. A seven-year-old drummer who is taking lessons from his teacher Isaac Rojas. When asked, Jaxson said,“ I wanted to play the drums because I had some when I was little! And I like to make a racket!” There is simply nothing like hearing the innocence of a young musician, we look forward to watching as Jaxon continues to learn and hone his craft. Maybe one day we’ll see him on the big stage! During the month of April we encourage you to get outside of your comfort zone, find a new style of music to enjoy, and maybe even express your creativity through learning a new instrument! “I’ve always enjoyed singing. Whether it was worship in church, being a part of my elementary choir, or serenading my parents in the car, I loved music. But when my dad suggested I start voice lessons, I was less than enthusiastic. Little me didn’t think I needed it. My dad had an entire debate with me, arguing that even professionals had voice coaches. Several years later, I am so glad I listened. Music is an intrinsic part of me. It’s my way of expressing myself and connecting with others. I have so many great memories with my friends and choir, and one of my best friends and I have bonded through our time at Firey. As much fun as a high school choir is, my weekly rendezvous‘s with Mrs.Tina let me let loose a little, all the while pushing my limits and attaining new skills to use later. … and it’s kind of fun to show off sometimes. Spring is right around the corner and you know what that means…. Being outside! To get ready for the fresh spring air, trees, flowers blooming and warmer weather we made a phone call to Jeff Edwards, the City of Sand Springs Parks and Recreation Director, to chat about our amazing local parks. We wanted to find out what they have been doing during the winter months.. HINT: revamping and improving our parks for the 2022 season. Start working on your camera skills now, because you’ll want to record the beautiful walking and hiking trails that are kept pristine by the parks services department. “Boyd Trail was just completed about a month ago and features a complete new walking trail at nearly a mile in length,” said Edwards. They don’t call it Green Country for nothing! As a bonus to the new walking trails, Edwards shared some other exciting news: “We just wrapped up the parking lot addition at the Keystone Ancient Forest.” The new parking lot will provide easy and safe parking for people who want to hike, walk, or run. “Spring hiking activities will pick up with warmer weather approaching.” shared Edwards, and we couldn’t be any more excited!
