MYERS PARK PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Engage 2012

January - May

An invitation to grow in mind, body and spirit.

W

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” MATTHEW 9: 37

ould you do me a favor? When someone asks me that, I cannot help but think, “It depends on what it is.” So I will keep my request short and sweet.

Think about your life. More than likely your days are full making a living, strengthening your family, cultivating your health and stimulating your mind. But how many minutes each week do you spend nurturing your life in Christ?

I promise that is not a trick question. Attending worship is great, but how much time do you spend deepening your relationship with Christ? Do you pray or read the Bible? Are you part of a small group? Ever do something in outreach? Sure, life is full. But what do you do to nurture your faith? Do me a favor. Live with that question for a little while. This edition of Engage is full of opportunities to enhance your faith journey. Start small or go big. The advantage of a large church is that there are so many options. Do yourself a favor, and make a choice. The rewards are great!

it is TIME. get INVOLVED. make a COMMITMENT.

This partnership between Myers Park Presbyterian and three other local churches includes dual events for youth and their parents. Feb. 10, Almost Christian, Kendra Kreasy Dean, 7–9:30 p.m., Myers Park Presbyterian Outreach Center Take a look at why many youth feel Christianity does not make a difference. Together we will examine how to move from the “gospel of niceness” to a passionate faith, ridding ourselves of a shrink-wrapped Christian identity and truly living the gospel. Youth will have activities in the outreach center. April 15, Faithful Families, Mark Devries, 6–7:30 p.m., Providence Presbyterian Discover why the real measure of your youth's faith is not attendance, the number of "mountaintop experiences" or sheer zealousness. BETH VAN GORP CROSS MISSIONS COORDINATOR 704.927.1279, bvangorp@myersparkpres.org

CROSS Missions, a unique urban outreach ministry of Myers Park Presbyterian, was founded in 1999. Visiting youth groups share Christ’s love and grace with our community’s less fortunate.

Regional Over the past 11 years, more than 6,000 people from over 200 churches in 17 states have served through our CROSS Missions ministry. It is our hope that visiting churches return home and initiate similar programs to serve the needs of their communities.

Outreach Regional youth groups minister to people who are homeless, hungry, elderly, addicted, disabled, memory-impaired and children who are at-risk or living in poverty.

Study & Spirituality Each day begins with 30-minutes of worship and a ministry site review. Evening activities include devotions and reflections on the day. A closing worship service is held onThursday for summer groups; weekend groups attend the 8:45 a.m. Celebrate service.

CROSS Missions Host Extend hospitality by serving as a Monday night dinner host during the summer to our visiting youth groups who are sharing Christ’s love to our urban neighbors. On Saturdays during the year, accompany youth and adults while they serve at local mission sites.
