While the storms have been raging (and now hopefully over) I’ve been spending the past few months putting together something new. My name is Lee, I live in Costessey and I grew up in Bowthorpe and Earlham. A true local boy! I’ve seen many changes in these areas over the years, the past year has seen a lot of change for me personally.

Scouting in Costessey

I’ve wanted a new challenge for a while. Publishing a local business guide had entered my thoughts, but it wasn’t until around New Year when a friend seemingly read my mind and suggested the same idea back to me, that I decided to do something about it!

Print and Web Norwich Designer Emedias Web and Hosting

Just two months later, I’ve put together a small magazine full of all sorts of local things! Whether you’re looking to make home improvements, get some gardening tips, go to an event, join a local group or just tackle a puzzle, there should be something here of interest or use - so keep it handy!

Help build the future of hospice care in Norfolk. P

riscilla Bacon Lodge in Norwich is the existing hospice, which delivers specialist end-of-life care for Norfolk. Those who have had a friend, colleague or loved one who has received this care or spent their final days there, will know the benefit of this service. The Lodge was built 40 years ago, following a county-wide fundraising appeal led by Priscilla, Lady Bacon. Since then, the population of Norfolk has grown by 220,000, creating a level of demand that cannot be met in a building which has become inadequate both in scale and configuration and the Lodge cannot be extended in its current location.

Despite the work of the Lodge and other end-of-life services, Norfolk has one of the poorest provision levels for specialist end-of-life care of any English county. Therefore, a new charity, Priscilla Bacon Hospice, was created to raise £12.5 million to build a new specialist hospice for Norfolk to replace the Lodge, which will transform the provision of much-needed services.

Priscilla Bacon Hospice will be built on land adjacent to the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital and will offer 24 inpatient beds alongside improved day care and outpatients’ facilities, as well as a coordination centre for the ‘Hospice at Home’ team, who deliver end-of-life care particularly in rural areas. It will also be a platform for education and research into palliative and end-of-life care supporting improvements in provision locally and nationally. Since the launch of our appeal in 2019, a tremendous response from the people of Norfolk and Waveney has resulted in over £5 million being raised. Your support in 2020 is critical to help get us closer to our fundraising total. 93p in every £1 donated goes directly to the capital appeal, with the cost of fundraising underpinned by our network of 7 charity shops. 40 years ago, the people of Norfolk came together to raise the funds to build Priscilla Bacon Lodge. Now it is our turn to do the same for Priscilla Bacon Hospice.

Garden Tips from

Costessey GardenCare

A

s we are now into Spring, and hopefully the worst of the weather is behind us…! It’s the perfect time to turn your attention to the outdoors and spend some time in the garden! Is there anything you want to change in the garden, or just trim, prune and enjoy what you have already created in previous seasons? If you are planning any changes, feel free to email us for our ‘Points to Consider’ document when planning changes: Sun tracking; soil type and drainage; future proofing the garden for children growing older or leaving home; or making the garden easier to maintain. We will start with simple tips for the lawn, trees, and beds for the next quarter:

Garden Design, Seasonal Planning Landscaping One-off Clearances and Tidy-ups Regular Garden Maintenance Lawn care, pruning and weeding

Seasonal Work Hedge trimming, topping and shaping Tree Root/Stump Removal We dig it out, not just grind the stump down to leave you with a barren patch in your garden

APRIL – Mow as required. Consider removing coarse grass and weeds, and re-seed bare patches.

Fruit trees may benefit from some summer pruning, although this depends on the variety you have.

APRIL – Tie in Roses of climbing or rambling varieties, begin feeding shrubs and roses, keep weeds down.

MAY – Mow more frequently as required, treat with weed and feed if not fed in April.

April-July is best for pruning Prunus varieties as it avoids silver leaf.

MAY – Summer bedding plants can go in, split up spring flowering bulbs like daffodils.

JUNE – Rake before mowing as it helps control runners of clover – water if required.

Remember, it is bird nesting season and it is illegal to disturb nests.

JUNE – Stake plants that need it, put shades over your greenhouses to avoid scorching, more weeding!
