e mostly dwell on the area of relationships as we have come to understand that the relationships we have affect our relationships with God. God made man and made him relational, however there is a way he expects us to carry ourselves in those relationships that will not tear us apart from him and his grace. In this magazine we discuss that and equip the youth and single adults and even that in marriage on working relationships as God calls us to. We are aware that the world has many experts when it comes to love, relationships, dating, marriage and sex and they all have been generous to share their opinion with us, but this time we choose to look to the greatest of all experts, the all knowing God and his word on the matter.

O

ur relationship on earth is to be a reflection of our relationship with God, We are the bride of Christ and we must teach our generation that to keep them from falling from grace. To allow them to be ready and prepared for the bride groom when he comes, for he is coming, we just do not know when. We want our generation to stay focused and determined to wait on God and not miss him when he comes as illustrated in math 25:1-13. Shalom

Welcome

As I look back on the time, I am amazed at the things God is able to do. I began this magazine as just a project where I would write articles, put down my thoughts, and lessons. The most interesting part about it all is that I personally was never to keen on reading and writing. I failed English in school and dyslexia makes it all very difficult to do for me, yet here it is. I have never taken a class in either photography, writing, or even graphic design, all I had was an idea, the will, the software and my God but then again when you through God into the mix what more do you need? We constantly face challenges when it comes time for publishing this magazine but whether we miss the deadline, whether some content is missing, whatever the case we have never given up, we have never used that as an excuse not to get the Job done because there is no excuse for not doing what you are blessed, equipped and empowered to do, moreover when God has your back. This issue we were blessed to have Holy Dave, personally I have had the desire to feature him for a long time and that time has finally come. I hope that you will enjoy getting up close and personal with him in our one on one segment. We ask that you start of continue to show support for gospel artists around the world not just by buying their music but praying for them. The industry is a tough one filled with trials and temptations and the enemy awaits children of light to try and devour them, our prayers is one way of raising up a standard against him and safe guarding our people. Build a fence of protection around them with your prayers. Speaking of Gospel artists, we began our journey last year with Kerah of Gospel fathers who had popped the question and was on his way to marry the woman of his dreams. We got started at when she said yes, and they allowed us to carry on into their I do and now they have invited us into their ever after as they there have been developments in their situation and we share all that with you in our special features pages. It is often believed that Christians should for some reason be poor or rather are associated with poverty. It is unfortunate that people think this as I truly know that many of people’s problems can be solved with money, God desires for his children to have redemption and if much of that can be achieved through prosperity he desires just that. Our snap booth section showcases pictures from a Training and Empowerment seminar that was held at JCC that encouraged and equipped Christians to prosper and be free. Enjoy your read Welcome and Shalom Thitu Kariba

women how to speak ‘martian’.

Mission to Mars Have you ever come to the realization of a truth that left you completely puzzled? Have you ever come to a realization that just jolted you out of your world and into what seems like another planet? Have you ever been talking to a foreigner and you have so much to say but you just do not speak the same language? I have. I found myself in a relationship with a man, a real man and realized that in doing so I had set off on a mission o Mars. With all the technology today has to offer, I have to say that when it comes to understanding men and women there is no GPS, there is no dictionary for what words mean, when a man says a word or hears it and what it means when a woman says or hears it. The most trying 6

part of all is that there is no manual. Ok I know that the bible has much to say about men and women, husbands and wives but when it comes to the book on how men are wired or on understanding a woman, it is a whole new journey. At times I feel like the Bible was written for earth but men are from Mars and more is needed. I found a book that I personally have to share with all of you; ‘For Women Only’ The book is about what you need to know about the inner lives of men. There is also another one,’ For Men Only’ by Shaunti Feldhahn. I have not read the entire book yet but each single page is just mind blowing revelation about these beings called men. It is not the kind of book you can read overnight, it is that interesting. It is also the kind of book that stops you dead in your tracks. It is basically a book that teaches

I recall a preacher saying that people need people. I recall the many couples I have seen getting married and I am amazed that a man and woman who are both so different can co exist and even live together till death do they part. It is amazing that even with all our differences, God looked and saw that Adam needed an Eve and even called her suitable. I find comfort in the fact that God does not make mistakes, I find it encouraging that he says he who finds a wife finds a good thing. Now that is surely something! I now understand why without God marriage fails. This is because it takes God’s love, grace, wisdom and guidance to make a successful relationship. I would encourage each of us to take time to seek God on relationship matters. There are General views about the behavior of men and women in relationships and these are just stereotypes. Remember your partner is an individual, whose behavior is subject to his own experiences, personality, and their own uniqueness. Take time to understand Gods word which says that women should respect their husbands and husbands should love their wives. Why love one and respect the other? That is how we are wired. Let God and your partner teach you how to relate and to love them. Obviously, you must be willing and ready to learn. Be ready and willing to take the mission to Mars or Venus.

Datacollection I attended a talk by Michele McKinney Hammond, who said that dating was all about collecting data. I agreed with that word and ran with it. What I found out along the way, is that it takes dating more than one person to gather the data required to make your relationships a success. The world has this idea that you can date two or more people at a time. That is not the kind of dating I am talking about. If you are to conduct research on any topic, you require varied sources of information, in order to draw a conclusion and the same applies to relationships. Lately I have found myself in a hot mess with my current and ongoing relationship because of lack of knowledge. That being the case I have taken it upon myself to make dates to collect data on the matter at hand. My issue was on how men think and how to love a man by respecting him. I got to making dates with my male friends to collect the data I needed. One told me things that allowed me to understand that men don’t act a certain way because of pride but because they are created that way. Another man gave a great example by stating that even if a lion was surrounded by grass he would die of starvation, lions do not eat grass, it’s not pride, it is just how they are made. That for me revolutionized my thoughts towards men totally. I made a date to collect Data from my father, from Christian men, from men I

Dating knew and men I did not know all that well, I made a date with God my father daily, and I made a date with books written about men. I was on a mission to get as much data as possible which I would use in my conquest to have a successful relationship and eventually a successful marriage. I know and understand that this is not all it takes but it’s a start. In order to understand something we must take time to define it, study it, appreciate it and respect it. When all this is said and done make a date with the one you love and collect more specific data. I came to realize that men assume that women naturally understand how they think or feel but we have no clue. Women expect men to know and understand them and their emotions. A woman may think that her mate just doesn’t care for her or he’s just being plain mean, but that is not true, men really have no clue what to say or do at times like when we cry. The statement that: ‘lions do not eat grass’ goes for both men and women, it is not pride nor stubbornness nor confusion nor emotions. That’s just how women were made. It is true what the bible says, ‘people perish for lack of knowledge’. This is true in all relationships, be it friendships, business, marriage etc. Your relationship, friendship, partnership and marriage can die from lack of knowledge. Mine was on the brink of just that, but I chose to do something about it. It is still in ICU but that is far better than the morgue. Take time today and each day to make a date with knowledge about what and who you care about. Pray for wisdom to be able to apply the knowledge in the manner God would have it so you can succeed.

Marriage

I Support Marriage

Some time ago, I turned on the TV to watch the news which I never do, as I do not like to watch news. Many people have called me weird, foolish, and all manner of things for not watching the news, but I worked at a media house and I have sat through the class. Bad news is good news, what we see on TV Is not always what it is, we could watch the same story one different channels and we will see the different angles at which the story is told depending on what they want you to believe. As I turned on the TV on this day, it broke my heart to hear the news report on the latest statements where marriages go By Barak Obama. The story was that he said the he supports gay marriage and they went on to show a clip of several gay couples in wedding attire. I thought it was funny that a 8

Harusi Magazine

June/ July

heterosexual man in a heterosexual marriage could say that, many may say it is because it is an election year and so on and so forth but I understand that all these things are fulfillment of prophecy. That’s not the topic for the day however, though Obama may support gay marriage, I have to say that I support marriage. Marriage is defined as the lifelong commitment/ covenant and union of a MAN and WOMAN in HOLY matrimony. That said anything between a man and man, woman and woman, human and animal is not marriage. The gay community has fought long and hard to be set apart, to be treated special and to have their own, unfortunately they want what already exists for, but they do not want to fall under the standards by which that thing is called what it is. If you want to be married as a man then find a woman, if you want to marry as a woman then it has to be to a man for it to qualify as a marriage. I have many gay friends, and I am clear that I love them even though I do not agree with their lifestyle. Why I do

not agree is because all that I am is aligned with the word of God, if God is not for it nor am I. God made them male and female and God joined the two, as far as unions and marriage goes that is the only sample I have to go with and I stick to it. If gay people are going to unite, then they ought to have their own thing and call it what they want but they cannot call it a marriage, that already exists and they do not qualify for it. God created marriage it is his thing if you are going to do something outside of him then call it what it is but not a God thing. I know that many may be very upset reading this, and I can understand. I am not denying gay people their rights, I am just saying to have the right to marry you need to be 1 Man +1Woman (not related)to qualify simple, that is the definition of marriage I did not create the word or the union I just abide to it as should all who want to take part in it. It about time that we call a spade a spade and not an agricultural item. I for one do not support gay marriage because there is no such thing, it is right there with the tooth fairy, Santa clause, and the living dead. If it is not in not just my Bible but ever y Bible then it is not truth. Gay people are doing something, it is similar to marriage in the way they carry out the ceremony and dress but it is not marriage.

Sex crave I recall the first time a friend of mine told me she was a Virgin; I almost fell off my seat! It’s amazing how it seems to be more shocking to be a virgin at 30yrs than to not be a virgin at 15 yrs or less. As I sit here writing this, my work mate and good friend is informing me that it’s sad but true because these days, immorality is on an all time high. She goes on to tell me that she is aware of an online recording of some youths at a house party having oral sex! As though that were not enough, she also says that it has become common is school buses for the older kids to sit in the back and have oral sex and this goes totally unnoticed by the teachers who sit up front. What in the world is happening? I am reminded of the verse in the bible that says a great darkness shall cover the earth. Without revelation on this word, one would think that it is implying that a very big and dark cloud will cover the earth. I came to learn and understand that Darkness is not the opposite of light but the absence of it, thus in this case it is right to say that there is a great absence of light, and right standing with God where sex is concerned. God never intended for children to have sex of any kind with each other or with adults. God never intended for men to have sex with men and women with women, God never intended for us to have sex with more than one person or with animals and God never intended for us to have sex outside of the committed union of marriage/ oneness. God did create sex to be an amazing and Harusi Magazine

very enjoyable and pleasure filled activity that brought forth fruit. Fruit in this case in oneness, intimacy, pleasure, joy and yes children. Unfortunately the absence of light in this area, of knowledge and understanding about sex has caused us to use and abuse it at will. We often hear the statement “Sex sells” and in such allowed the media, entertainment and advertising industry to run a mockery of morality. We have granted them access into our homes, newspapers, cars, books, radios, phones, the internet and the minds and lives of our children. Sex sells? What is it selling if not a mad craving and lust for things out of the will of God? Sex sells immorality, unwanted pregnancies, rape, abuse and molestation, abortion and much more. The TV or Internet is not a baby sitter. It is not

a co parent. It is a tool used to communicate ideas and opinions to the viewer. I understand that parents cannot be home all the time, but we need to know and understand what is going on in our homes, in our children’s lives, we need to prevent the darkness from creeping in by constantly shedding light on situations. It is unfortunate that at only 8 yrs of age my own son know what sex is and what being gay is. He should be concerned with cartoons and games not sexuality and what goes where and whether it is ‘Steve or Eve’. Indeed a great darkness has covered the earth and it is time we shed a greater light on it. To do nothing is to allow it. So sitting back and hoping, wishing or praying, is not going to cut it. We must wake up and stop the sex crave that is claiming our children’s lives. Great darkness may cover the earth but you are the light of the world, it is time to arise and shine!

Talking Spouses

Made for each other Each day I discover more and more how different men and women are. We are wired so differently that it is amazing we not only get along and co-exist but that we were deliberately made for each other. Did you ever say something and your spouse or took in a manner that was so far from how you meant it? Many times this comes down to how we are wired as men or women and not because you were actually wrong and this is something we have to e conscious of and apply when dealing with each other. There are several books written about men and women and how different they are, but there are also many books written about how they were made for each other. When Adam was in the garden, he looked around and he found that every creature had a companion and that none was suitable for him, God himself looked and said it was not God for Adam to be alone and made Eve. The thing is he made man and woman so different that it is at times difficult to get along. I find courage in that for one he is God and he knows what he is doing and makes no mistakes and two in that he said that she was suitable. If God says we are suitable for each other then suitable we are right? The world changes by the day, Men and women may not change but the world around them changes and fast. One day there is a list of all the things woman can do, the next day there is a list of all the things women can now do, rights, laws

and roles surrounding the sexes are ever changing. It is not wonder we are having a hard time relating. One thing that never changes and will never change is God and his word. He remains the same yesterday, today and forever. If you and I sought him in all things even matters concerning the man/ woman relationship there would be no confusion because it is constant and never changing. The word of God, the Bible and the books written by men and women that agree with his word will give you all the answers you need to be different but be one. God would never leave you out in the cold, he is not a sadist who is having a laugh, He wants you to work. Take time to study the opposite sex both in books and as individuals in person, only when we appreciate and understand our differences can be best know how to love and meet each other’s needs and be one. “To know you is to love you. I can assure you that even in all your differences you were made perfect for each other.

Staying Cold Free in the cold season Common cold is a common viral infectious disease of the upper respiratory system affecting the nose. Symptoms of the infection include sore throat, cough, fever and running nose. Common cold usually resolves between 7 and 10 days, but some symptoms last up to 3 weeks. There are over 200 viruses that are believed to cause the infection, but the most common are rhinoviruses. Common cold is most common during the cold season. There are several ways to avoid catching the infection. There are physical measures to prevent the spread of the virus. You should always wash your hands and you should consider wearing face masks. You should particularly wash your hands after shopping or visiting the gym. Do not touch your face, especially the mouth, the eye and the nose areas if you are around people who have common cold. Do not smoke during the cold season. Smoking will cause irritation to the airway

Health

and it makes you more susceptible to colds. Use disposable items whenever somebody in the family is infected. This is particularly important if there are kids in the house since they like sharing cups and other items. Keep all household surfaces clean, including drawer pulls, door knobs, light switches, keyboards, remote controls, telephones, sinks and countertops. Use paper towels for hand washing to prevent the passing of the viruses. Adopting a healthy lifestyle such as taking a balanced diet, sleeping adequately and exercising will ensure that your body is strong enough to fight infections. You should also control stress since people with emotional issues tend to have weakened immune systems. Start your day with a healthy breakfast and multivitamins. You could also avoid common cold by taking Vitamin C which can be gotten through oranges or orange juice. There are also herbal supplements that are great at fighting common cold, a good one being Echinacea.

Wealth

iN THE BEGINING We are often told or hear that in the beginning was the word and the word as at the beginning. God is a supreme being or divinity through and by him all things come to be. It is through him that you and I came to be and not by the meeting and interactions of a man and a woman. God exists as a Holy (set apart) trinity that consists of The Father, The Son and The Holy ghost. These are another wise known as the God head. In The beginning was the word and the word was with God and the words was God. God and his word are one. God allowed the word to become manifest on earth through Christ his son. Christ walked out every part of the word on earth and thus he is the word. Jesus not only came to earth to be the savior of man but also to introduce another aspect of side of God to us. God the father. Several times he referred to God as The Father or His father. Christ was the word and the truth made manifest. He came that we may be saved from the lie of the enemy on our lives, the lie that was told in the Garden of Eden that costs us our right standing, our position and place with God. He came to save us from the old ways of life, the down fall and to reconnect us with the life source. God the father. Thus it is true that no one can come to the father but through Christ. Christ indeed here is seen as the way. When His (Jesus) work was done, he departed the earth but it was at that point that he then introduced and other part of the God head to us. The Holy Ghost. As we walk the earth as we pray ad are instructed it is through the Holy 14

Harusi Magazine

June/ July

Ghost that we communicate and we have fellowship. It is therefore crucial that we do not ignore our spirit man or the Holy Ghost. When we look at all the above, we can then see that indeed God the father, never leaves us no forsake us and is with us always. In the beginning, God gave instruction to The Man and Woman that he put on earth to be fruitful ( be productive) Multiply ( grow in number through birth or unity) subdue ( be top rank/ be on top) have dominion ( rule over and reign). That mandate has not changed, it was interrupted, and Christ came to restore us to our original nature and even went beyond hat to empower us even further so that we could do even more in every area of our calling. As a starting point, we need to know and understand that we fell and fell short of the glory, ability, and power, to do that which he called us to do. That I why mankind results to all manner of things and ways to do that very thing. It is crucial that we understand that in the Garden, in paradise was the introduction of another lifestyle, character, and nature that was unlike Gods that of Satan. We have to understand that here on earth there two Kingdoms, two Characters if we could call it that at work. The Kingdom of God and that of Satan. Because Satan has not ability to create, the mandate has not changed only the principles, the why, the how, then when and the what. While one Kingdom is about Truth and justice one is about corruption and lies. We all serve one or the other the question is which one? Our business, our money our work also serves one or the other.

Tips on How to Look Hot when it is Cold

You can look hot even as you look to stay warm this cold season. One way of doing this is wearing long underwear. This might sound like your grandmother’s solution, but today’s long underwear lines are sleek and thin enough to slide underneath any outfit. They create an invisible layer of insulation. Another option is layering. You have to do this right if you want to look hot. The trick to correct layering is using the right pieces and wearing them in the correct order. You should pay attention to the neckline and you should try to layer higher-lined tops on the bottom. The inner layers should hug the body as much as possible. You could go for a fitted sweater.

You should wear ear muffs and a pair of gloves. An alternative to gloves is hand warmers. The coat should be stylish and the socks should be thick. You should go for a scarf that is in a texture and pattern that complements your clothes. Go for a faux fur coat because this looks really hot. Women's trench coats are also back in fashion. You do not have to stick to black just because the cold season is here. Add color to your wardrobe to look hot. Red is a particularly good color for the cold season. Trade in your jeans for leggings to look hop. Your makeup won’t melt off during the cold season and you could therefore play around with it.

You could look hot this cold season by wearing a hat. You have to style your hair correctly so that you look hot in your hat. Choose the hat color and design based on the clothes you are wearing. You should go for good boots for hot look. The boots should be waterproof and warm. Go for thigh-high boots.

Living Room Décor Ideas The living room is a very important part of the house. It is where you entertain your guests and also where you spend much time bonding with your family. It is therefore important that you have the right décor in this room. Pick a theme you like and that everybody in the family will enjoy. This could be traditional, desert, sea, Asian, cartoon, movie or anything else you will not mind looking at everyday. The focal point should be the 'first thing' you see when entering a room. Build the focal point around a beautiful lamp or an eye-catching piece of furniture. The colours you choose will affect how guests feel in the space. Colours can energize or relax the space, depending on how intense they are and how warm or cool they are. For example, pastel colours are softer and more soothing, while bold solid colours like red and black can add a sombre mood to the room.

rooms because it is a public space. To make it a welcoming room that expresses your personality, choose wall-coverings or treatments that reflect your style. Bring your garden into your living room using such gardening elements as flowers and plants into the space. When doing renovations for your living room, remember that trim-work serves practical purposes, covering the seams where floors and ceilings meet walls and supporting the structure around openings. These elements serve aesthetic purposes too. Walls come alive when you use them to display art or collections that you love. Do not forget other parts of the house such as the bath and the kitchen – there should be a balance.

As the primary gathering space in a house, the living room requires furniture arrangement that promote conversation and interaction. Keep in mind the scale and dimension of the room when choosing furniture, so that the pieces fit comfortably in the space. Do consider the layout, the size in terms of proportion to your living room and the number of people you want to fit in the area. Drapery can make all the difference to a room, providing elegance and opulence. They also help provide a soft warm environment as well as creating colour, pattern and texture for your home décor. Small Bath Room Décor Tips

Bathroom

Small bathrooms are difficult to decorate due to limited space, but there are several bath décor tips that will help you. These include using large, light-coloured tiles on the floor. A white or very light beige or grey floor will give a small bath room the illusion of space. Choose light colours for the walls. They need not be white or beige, but dark colours in a small bathroom will make the walls 'close in' on you. Look for small, wall mounted sinks without vanities. These permit more of your floor to show. More visible floor space makes a small bathroom appear larger. Choose cabinets that can be set into the wall. Cabinet doors or open shelves should be flush with the wall surface. Smooth, unbroken wall surfaces make a small bath room appear longer and wider. Any cabinet doors should be painted to match the wall colour. Hang large mirrors in your bath. Mirrors reflect space, and make a small bathroom seem nearly double its size. Consider having a large mirror above the sink, and one or more additional mirrors. If your bathroom has a bathtub, replacing it with a clear-glass-door shower stall can free up some space. Alternatively, choose a small, extra deep Japanese style bath tub. This comes in a near-square that frees space beside the tub for your wall sink. The tub is large enough for small children. Older children and adults can use as a soaking tub. Add a shower and curtain for rush times.

Over-the-door towel bars hold multiple towels in a small space and free up space. You can have tissue box holders in clear acrylic mount on the wall and toothbrush and tumbler holders. One of the most important small bath room decorating tips is to use pictures and plants. Photos or prints mounted in 'floating' clear frames can establish a decorating theme for a small bathroom. Two or three pictures of sandpipers on a beach, for example, can establish the use of sandy beige on the walls. Towels can be sandy beige with a border of marine blue. A shower curtain can carry through the theme. Bring gardening into your bath room. A green plant, live or silk, can be hung in a corner. Use a light-coloured basket for an airy look. The bathroom décor should match the décor in the rest of the house (the kitchen and the living room).

Quintessential Kitchen Décor Ideas Kitchen space is a quintessential area of your house where the entire family gets together over a hearty meal and a warm conversation. It is therefore important that you find the perfect kitchen décor. Painting is an inexpensive project that makes a huge impact on the look of any room. Go for neutral colours since they do not appear dated and you will not tire of the paintwork quickly. Seasonal changes can help brighten up kitchens. Optimize the space to give it an airy feel by arranging the furniture, removing some of it as well as some decorations or opening the curtains.

Kitchen character to your kitchen by using strategically placed accessories. You can create a unique theme for your kitchen by using salt and pepper shakers, pot holders, dish towels, toaster covers and canister sets. Other options are adding borders and using cabinet pulls. Consider bringing your gardening into the kitchen. You could have some flowers or plants making part of the kitchen décor. Ensure that the décor in your bath, living room and other parts of the house complements that in the kitchen and that you do proper gardening. There should be a balance if you are to have the desired effect.

Kitchens can be brightened up through the use of mirrors to capture the sunlight and bounce it across the room. For the most light distribution, place mirrors across from windows or on walls that corners against the window walls. Look at various magazines, Internet, books and television shows to get an idea of what you would like to see in your own kitchen. Cookbooks are not only a good source for yummy recipes, they are also great for your décor. You can arrange them in interesting positions, horizontally or vertically, or you can align them in graduating sizes. To give colour and a lived in touch to kitchens, try hanging some plants from bare ceiling corners. Plants not only soften up kitchens, they also add interest to it as well. You can use real plants, or if they will be in hard to reach places, use silk plants instead. To cover an old or mismatched floor or to add colour, an area rug is a wonderful choice. Be sure to get the right size for your kitchen by measuring the space where you want your rug. Add some

Home and Décor Tips: Garden Décor Tips

Many home owners make the mistake of neglecting their gardens as they do their house décor. You should do gardening even ad you decorate your bath, living room, kitchen and other parts of the house since the nature of your garden says a lot about you. Gardening gives you a place to relax and it is a great pastime. Bird feeders and bird baths are a great addition to any garden. It makes a garden seem more alive when there are animals in it moving around. It’s also fun to sometimes just sit and watch birds as feed or listen to their songs. It is also fun to just see how many different types of birds you can attract to your yard. Birds and animals in general are a great type of 'live' garden décor. Benches and chairs are usually good out in your garden. If you have a nice set of trees that are spaced about four meters apart, you may want to 22

set up a hammock. Even if you don’t have big, sturdy trees in your garden, you can opt for a hammocks that comes with their own stands and install it in your space. Patio furniture also looks great in a garden, such as a set of tables and chairs designed for the outdoors. Wicker couches and a coffee table can add a touch of elegance to the garden, as well as a large shade umbrella for particularly sunny days. You can find chimes made of copper, clay or ceramic for your gardening. Several lighting options are also available for your garden or patio. Candles can add a soft, flickering light, or a string of electric lanterns for a more steady light. If you have a spot in your garden where you just can't seem to grow anything, a container of silk flowers can certainly brighten up the area. You may also put in some small planters on the wall or fence, with trouble-free artificial flowers. Add such water features as large ponds with fish, water lilies, bridges, and fountains when doing gardening.

THE STARS OF SOURCING CARS

karuoro@zero260.co.ke

Cars Given our behavior when it rains, one may be forgiven for thinking that Kenyan cars are water soluble like sugar. Such is the magnitude of the general panic and chaos that ensues as soon as there is any sort of water falling from the sky. Drivers in Nairobi go totally bonkers when it rains. They are suddenly all in a huge rush to get..somewhere (no one knows where), yet ironically, we all suddenly drive ridiculously slowly. Nairobi turns into gridlock in slow motion. It sounds like a contradiction to say that everyone is in a rush yet driving slowly but the rush manifests itself in people blocking junctions, roundabouts and exits. So we all grind to a halt. The reasons for this behavior are many and varied..from the fact that our drainage is woeful meaning that any small drizzle prompts flooding that feels like something out of Genesis Chapter 6 to the fact that most of our jalopies are totally unprepared for rain so we end up being not only slow but a little dangerous as well. So here are a few tips to staying safe and mobile even when we have some rain. 1.

When it rains the risk of aqua planning increases. When tyres get worn, the tread depth decreases. The tread on the tyre is what channels water away from the tyre and keeps the tyre firmly on the road. Worn tyres lose the ability to effectively channel water away so when the car hits standing water (even shallow standing water), tyres lose contact with the road and momentarily turn the car into an uncontrollable boat. This is the phenomenon known as aqua planning. It is very dangerous and it is essential that one ensures their Harusi Magazine

tyres are not too worn before it rains. The smoother the tyres, the higher the chances of aqua planning. 2. Driving Style

Driving in the rain

June/ July

Rain makes the road slippery. If you are too aggressive in your driving style on the wet roads, you increase the likelihood of skids and accidents. Best to drive smoothly, take off and slow down gently and leave more room than you ordinarily would between you and the car in front. This allows you more room for maneuver should anything occur. It is also important not to block junctions so as to allow traffic to flow in all directions. Also avoid driving through

Cars puddles like a lunatic to ensure you don't end up being one of those embarrassing cases of stalling because water went someplace where water isn't supposed to go. 3. Visibility We usually forget to check our wipers, defrost systems and vents during the dry season. This means that when it rains, we end up driving blind to some extent. This is quite dangerous. It is important to ensure that the visibility aids of the car work effectively. The wipers should clear the screen without leaving any streaks, the defrost system should clear the whole screen quickly and effectively. It is also useful to keep a (non - oily) cloth in the car just in case the defrost system fails for any reason. 4. Be Careful This sounds obvious but not everyone practices it. Exercise extra care when driving in the rain. The roads are slippery, may have flooding (which may hide dangerous potholes), visibility may be compromised (especially in heavy rain) etc...so be careful and stay safe.

Holy Dave Holy Dave

34

Harusi Magazine

December/January

Real Name I go by the name David Muthengi How did you come to be called Holy Dave and do you feel you live up to that name even off stage or out of the studio? It started as a nickname. I was quite quiet, shy and reserved so my friends gave me the name ‘holy joe’ which later transformed to ‘holy dave’. No one is holy apart from God so I just use the name as a daily challenge to live right. Did you always want to be a Gospel artist and have you always been that or did you start off on a different footing? I’ve always been a Christian artiste. I was raised in a Christian family so I became a gospel artiste by default. Later on when I had a choice I decided to glorify God with my talent and therefore I stuck to gospel. What is your definition of a gospel artist and do you feel that all other gospel artists live up to your definition? There is no single definition. In Kenya all the artistes who sing positive or religious music are termed as gospel artistes while the rest are termed as secular artistes. That’s just the Kenyan definition. I believe it’s a calling though and even within the gospel industry there are different sub-categories. Whether or not gospel artistes are living accordingly is a matter that only God can judge. We all have mentors or role models who have or are doing what we are, who is that for you? My role model is Jesus Christ. I have a few mentors but they are not in the music industry. They are successful individuals who are in different industries. Why do you do live for God and sing his praises when you could use your gifts and talent to be rich and famous in the secular industry? The bible says “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you”. Harusi Magazine

One on One

What are the challenges you face as a gospel artist in the music industry and how do you get by? Some people expect us to be gospel artistes to be perfect so sometimes the expectations might be high. I just try as much to be myself and show people that I’m just a regular person off the street. You are a nice looking guy, when it comes to groupies God or no God they come how do you deal with such temptation and what other temptations are there out there for a guy like you doing what you do? Thanks for the compliment. Yeah sometimes I get a lot of attention but I’m kind of used to it. I just take cold showers and move on with life hahaha. What inspires your music, how do you come up with your songs? I like having conversations with people at concerts and on social media. From those conversations I get to note certain topics to address and after praying a concept comes. Sometimes the inspiration comes over a long period of time, say a month or two but sometimes I get instant inspiration and I start composing on my phone. Who are some of the artist you have worked with and who could you like to work with in future? Mostly I’ve worked with new artistes like Kelele Takatifu, Bantu, Izzo and Eko Dydda. Working with Jimmy Gait on the “Make it or make it campaign” marks the first time I’ve worked with an established artiste. I want to continue my trend of working with upcoming artistes so if I mention names you probably won’t know who I’m talking about. Speaking of the future, what does it hold for you, your fans and the music industry? My future is bright. When I sleep all I see is lights..hehe. Expect good, quality and inspiring music. I’m about to open a record label which I believe will have a direct impact in raising the standards of the industry. The record label will also host my management/strategic planning company so musicians will be able to consult or rather seek professional strategic planning advice.

“I wake up at 6, have devotions as I listen to worship music, do some exercise, take a shower and then have breakfast. I go online and post the status of the day on facebook and on twitter. I then go about whatever tasks and meetings I have scheduled till around 10 pm. This might include business development meetings, strategy meetings, lectures, studio sessions etc. I get home, have dinner and then write rhymes followed by a brief performance practice session. I then clear backlog in terms of work till around 12am then I watch international news or documentaries until I doze off. When I have aJune/July lot of work I sleep at 2am or Harusi Magazine 37 even 3am.

What is your desire for Gospel music/ musicians in Kenya and the world over I desire the day gospel musicians will stop focusing on all the side shows and focus on the task we have ahead of us. What are your achievements so far as far as music goes? My achievements are inspiring, encouraging and motivating young people world over, changing the lives of many for the better. I really don’t care much about awards although I’ve received some and I will still receive more. What would you tell musicians gospel or otherwise given the chance which we just have? If you really think that music is your thing take it seriously, just like you would any other career. If you put in little time, expect a little impact. Practice makes perfect. All things are possible if you believe in yourself and most importantly in God. Any last words? I love my fans, I love my supporters. I love all God’s people and I will keep doing what I have been called for till the end. Much love.

Whispers from Heaven

Covered Nakedness What’s the easiest thing you’ve ever had to do? Personally, my answer would be ‘put up a face.’ It’s by far the easiest thing I have ever had to do. Trust me; people like me would win an award for this. I’ve done it practically all my life but its disadvantages are on the high so I’m learning to just be honest with reality and more so myself. It just amazes me how in the outside world every body perceives you to be this ‘Miss Independent’ kind of girl like Neyo would sing. You walk like the boss, talk like the boss, etc. They call you all sorts of good names, and shower you with flattering remarks. Like recently, a friend of mine, decided to expound on the fact that I am too special with these exact words. “You’re beautiful, sweet, kind, you’re certainly loving, your sexy like a problem… you’ve been through a lot but you still remain to stand as a strong woman…the list is endless” Now you can imagine, I was trying not to smile really hard, but I couldn’t hide it. Until I was alone, and I reflected on those words is when I realized, that actually, I never really felt that way about my self. What exactly was he seeing that I didn’t seem to, every time I looked in the mirror? Let’s face it. We, who hide behind a mask, are such pros. You can’t really notice us can you? I don’t blame you. Why? It’s because we are ever smiling, laughing, bursting out with joy, and spreading a fragrance of happiness that’s attractive in every ‘wing’ of life. We are head turners. We make you glare for hours at our physiques and covet our blessed features that seem to bloom every minute like a flower. Sometimes we wear buggy jeans and t-shirts, or lot’sof make up and long dresses to sweep the streets just to keep the secret, that “hey, I really don’t want you to be that interested in me, because I don’t think you will love me the same way, if you knew my past and where I have come from.” It’s not that we want to, but that is how life has allowed us to be. We’ve been there, to the darkest of pits, where we screamed and no one heard. We cried and no one held us. We tried to run, but we were locked up. We loved, but unfortunately, were taken advantage of. We don’t want you to know, but we wish you could anyway. We don’t know how to speak about it, though we are dying to. Maybe you would be our rescuer, to come and help us escape this dungeon of our past and roll us into the recovery room, to begin a new life of dreaming new dreams, and achieving our destiny… Reality is, wherever you maybe, someone close or far from you is putting on a mask every single day, to hide a dark past from reflecting in their everyday endeavors. I love that simple proverb we used to use in almost every composition in primary school, “Do not judge a book by its cover.” Until you get close enough, to the depth of the heart of a person, you’ll never really know, whether they sleep like a baby, or fight countless demons and ghostly voices from a horrible past, in the middle of the night. Now let me talk to you; you who is smiling and possessing the world’s most beautiful visage, but a battered identity on the inside, and you know it. It’s easy to take care of others and be their number one hero when it comes to sorting out their numerous dilemmas. You can be a tower of faith and prayer for others but in reality you know you are impotent when it comes to your own limitations. This is the painful truth (the truth always hurts by the way- but it always sets you free), you cannot keep suppressing your feelings inside. They will destroy you eventually, like little termites hogging on a piece of deserted bread. Before you know it, you will be on the down low. Enough is enough! Stop fighting, stop hiding and get up from that dungeonof your past. Present yourself to God; in his presence, the past will fall off you like a garment, and he will cover you in the shadow of his wings. He will serenade you with His love.

Note this one thing; YOU ARE FIXABLE! The only condition you have is to allow God to do so, because He is the only one who can. Not a rich man, a classy lifestyle, your job, your money… Just God! He certainly has an interesting way of doing it. He covers your nakedness. He doesn’t expose you; he wraps you in his glory, so that people see Him through you and not your shame and guilt. When God covers you, you glow in Him. You blossom and flourish. You bloom and not the slightest hint of the past trauma is reflected when the world looks at you. They see beauty. They see grace; they are attracted by the illuminating smile on your face. You don’t repel, you attract. All because of one thing; God has covered your nakedness. You may be bleeding on the inside. Though the best thing is when you allow Him to work on the inside the results are seen on the outside too. (Ezekiel 16:6-10) When God covers your nakedness, there are times you may feel exposed. Situations may come that make you feel invaded. You may be broken. Try not concentrate on your broken state. Take time to sit still to remind yourself who you are, whose you are and what He says about. Once you do so chances are that you confidently allow the oceans to rise, and the thunders raw, because this time round you are working hand in hand with your creator; the 'coverer' ofyour nakedness. Unless He discloses you, which he won’t, then there’s no need to be afraid or ashamed. Just relax, God’s in control so let him love on you all day, all night, everyday. Your relationship with God is Key. Be real with Him. Be intimate with Him, in the sense that, you challenge Him, you speak what is in your heart, you tell Him, the truth of how you feel-you know those times when you feel he has actually left you to handle your issues on your own, and you’re angry that you feel that way… vent. Set time aside, to be authentic with Him, because even before you tell Him, He knows. (Read the story of Gideon in Judges 6, to catch a glimpse of what I mean by intimacy) God wants to bring you to a place of rest. A place where there’ll be not much pacing to do. No running from a haunting past. No staring at others especially those who hurt you through fighting, the frightening eyes and timid stature. He wants to remove you from that dark spot in which you’ve been hiding and bring you into a bright future and purpose that he has laid out for you. It’s about time you got rid of your feelings of hatred, aroma of bitterness, taste of unworthiness and gather boldness to step out into a world of freedom in your mind (Rom. 12:2). You need to not only break those chains and links; bury them, lock them up and throw them into the sea offorgetfulness. The more time you spend with your new found love, Jesus Christ, the less time you will spend contemplating on the dungeon of your past and all the ghosts that roar with it. God wants you to have inner peace and joy. If only you allow him to love on you. God is love. So hold on tight to his embrace and you are bound to feel safe and be ‘fear-free’. 1st John 4:18. One thing I have learnt is that we have authority given to us by God. That authority gives us power to come against everything evil, INCLUDING that fear harboring within you as a result of remaining in that ‘prison.’ God is the potter and you are the clay, so let Him work on you and mould you into something beautiful inside out. Purpose to change your mindset, and begin to dream big things for you; Burry the necessary fears, and leave them to rest in pieces. Choose to begin to live a new you… Be that which you were meant to be; as God covers your nakedness, to bring out the best in you. Written by: Namwano Shichende

Laura: It has been a year that I wouldn't change a thing about! I married the love of my life, and together we have been blessed to expand our love into a precious baby girl.

I was full of adrenaline and for some reason Would you have liked to have more time to I thought it was going to take like a whole yourselves as a couple? week just to deliver this baby, but Mungu is mkubwa sana. It was only 15.5hours, thank God because I would have fainted or Kerah: We did have that time for ourselves, a something. whole 39 weeks and 4 days bana and remember we had been dating for two years. Laura: Labor was....well... Let me just say, I am happy that epidurals were invented! I went in Laura: Kerah and I had an amazing 2 years of to labor at 3am, from 3-4am my contractions dating, and spent a lot of time communicating were 4-5 minutes apart, and from 4amthrough our decision to have a baby right away, 5:19pm they were every 1.5-2 minutes apart. so I feel as though having a baby just deepened I lasted 9.5 hours trying to do it naturally, our love and connection with each other. Doing what you need to do A while ago, God called me his healing ambassador and gave me his word and promise in Isaiah 61 to go with it. There are times when our parents say things or give us things that they are all too pleased about and you feel quite the opposite about. Many are the times when children have been left a good inheritance, and they cannot see the value in it, and sell it. A great example was Esau selling his first born right to Jacob for a bowl of stew. When God gave this to me, I did not see the value in it, I could not see past how unqualified I was for the tusk to even see his point in giving me the job. Last year I spoke to a friend of mine who was all too eager to have me speak in schools and to young people about my life and what God has done for me. He was also very eager for me to have a chat with a certain young lady who needed help but in vain. This year as I went through transformation in God, as I went through a great amount of healing, I went back to the same friend and asked about the young lady only to find out that she had taken her own life. I was not shocked, but I was terrible saddened. Without getting the help that she needed, there was little that could be done to avoid the tragic end, I know because I have been there. One of the things that God has been encouraging me to do is talk about my past without fear of the shame and what people may say or think. I took a bold step and put something up on Face book about an incident in my past, and It occurred to me that all along I was holding my breath until I hit enter when I exhaled slowly. I got several responses but the one that made the most impact was one from a friend who shared with me, that she had gone through something similar recently. At this point something happened inside of me. I broke out of that place of wanting into a place of needed. I did not want to talk about my past and more over shine the lime light on it but there was a need to do so. In the same week I chose to present a proposal for a TV show to a production company. The show is called The Healing Ambassador which we begging shooting this week. The moment I put in the proposal, not only was it accepted and approved by Rich Productions, they decided to do it for no cost. As I sat with my director and producer, they asked me many personal questions, but one of the things they made very clear was that to take up the title and the task would be a big responsibility. They wanted to be sure I was ready for it and that I was sure I wanted to do it. I told them the truth, I do not want to do it, it would be much easier for me and many others if I would keep my mouth shut, but I need to do it because lives are at stake. I was told that the thing that the enemy uses to get and keep you down it’s the thing God will use to free you and lift you up. I would never in a million years have through my mess would turn to a message, I would never have thought that my tears, my mourning would turn to dancing. I would never have imagined that I would one day talk about what happened to me openly and not only be alright with it, but smile and joke while doing so. Taking up this role, taking up my place is not something I wanted to do, it is something I run from for years and God and several people he used in my life such as my Son, my best friend and my man caused me to finally stop and face my fears, overcome my past and embrace my future. We are not always called to do what we want to do, or love to do, we are called to do what God needs done, let us not sell our inheritance for a bowl of stew. Embrace it and let God do a great thing in and through you and turn your misfortune into a great fortune. Shalom Miss Boss 46
