Leading A Child To Christ

BEFORE leading a child to Christ, the church leader must ask, “Why?” The answer is simple. The act of leading a child to Christ is a fulfillment of the Great Commission. We are to win and disciple every person, young or old. The act of winning a child is an act of loving rescue. If you believe a child can spend an eternity without Christ, then you must be compelled to rescue that child for Christ. What are some basics you should know about leading them to Christ? Be kind and loving. Your gentle spirit will do much to encourage the child that Christ is a loving and kind Savior. It is a testimony to Christ’s saving power when a kind and loving adult confronts a child for Christ. Many adults in a child’s life only address the child in a cold, commanding tone. Your presentation of Christ using loving words and a kind spirit will do much to convince the child of his need for the Savior. Use kid language. Christianity and its benefits must be explained in a manner understood by the prospective convert. Whether winning a tribal chief in Kenya or a little girl in Waukee, Iowa, the evangelist must use language and concepts understood by the listener. The culture of childhood can rarely comprehend the language and examples provided by many adult preachers. Speak in kid-friendly terminology. Avoid abstract concepts. Children grow from concrete thinking to abstract thinking sometime in their mid- to late-elementary years. Phrases like, “Let Jesus wash you in His blood” or “Ask Him to come into your heart” should be avoided. I once met a boy who was convinced his grandfather died because Jesus was in his heart. He

explained that Jesus couldn’t fit so his “grandfather’s heart got broken.” Speak softly. Loud volume and aggressive tone of voice can often scare a child. Soften your approach to things of God. Let the child come to Jesus. This is not a time to be argumentative or pushy. Relax your voice and attitude. Make no presupposition of biblical knowledge. The unchurched and unsaved child may have no idea who Jesus, David the shepherd boy, or Jonah is. When referencing a Bible story or verse, explain it in plain, understandable language. Approach every salvation encounter as if it is the first time the child has heard the good news. Ask questions. Allow the child to discover God’s truth. Open a Bible. If old enough, encourage the child to read a highlighted verse. After reading it, ask what the verse means to him. Let the child answer in his own way and with his own words. Do not rush this process. Allow the child to ask questions. Nothing is off-limits when a soul is in need of the Savior. Through the interaction of asking and answering questions, the child can come to terms with her need for Jesus. When you

think you have explained the message adequately, ask the child what she wants to do. Once the message has been explained, and understood fully, it’s time to pray. Some employ a call-and-response style prayer. Remember that prayer should never be forced. If the child is not ready to give his life to Christ, simply close in a prayer that reminds the child of what was discussed. If he is ready, pray the child through to Jesus. I always encourage a child to pray in his own words after concluding a call-andresponse prayer. Remember the word S.I.N.G. when praying. Speak conversationally, Involve the child, No churchy adultspeak, and Give God the glory. By the way, God wants the child to join His family more than you do. “Now I lay me down to sleep; I pray the LORD my soul to keep.” The sweet poignancy of these words lisping off the lips of young children over the centuries is a precious reminder of the importance of teaching children about prayer. Yet our role in working with toddlers and preschoolers is not merely in teaching them about prayer, but in partnering with them in prayer.

A faith that believes By nature of the way the brain works in early childhood, children are not hampered by cynicism and life’s disappointments. Their requests are free and confident because they truly believe anything is possible. Their prayers are powerful because of their unflinching belief in the impossible. Children are the ultimate example of a Mark 11:24 prayer, where Jesus exhorts us to “Pray for anything, and if you believe that you've received it, it will be yours” (NLT). Hearing children pray for the impossible challenges us as adults to shake the subtle complacency and cynicism from our own heavenward requests to ask big and believe big.

A faith that remembers How often have we been guilty of promising to pray for someone, only to forget the promise to pray in the busyness of life? Not so with children.

Children tend to remember the important things. If you don’t believe me, hint at a promise to do something with them two months from now. You won’t have to mention it again— they will remember and mention it every time they see you. This same behavior that tends to drive us crazy is the same behavior that allows them to remember—day after day, week after week—the concerns and needs of those they care about. Children do not forget or give up easily. They embody the encouragement provided in Matthew 7:7: "Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you” (NLT). May their persistence teach us a thing or two about perseverance.

A faith that connects It is true that young children understand the world best through their own life experiences. Because of this, they are often written off as selfish. Yet from my experience, young children can be incredibly sensitive and empathetic to the needs of others. There is something embedded in the nature of children that draws them to others’ pain and sadness. Their willingness to lean in when someone else is hurting is a poignant reminder and example to us as adults to bear one another’s burdens, as we are instructed to do throughout

the epistles. Allow their natural interest in helping others during heartache to cause us to partner with them to do something practical while we ask God who can do anything supernaturally.

A faith that rejoices There is nothing quite like the joy of a child. Free from social restraint, their capacity to delight in circumstances around them is boundless. One of the best portrayals of this characteristic is found in 2 Samuel 6, as David celebrates riotously in response to God’s provision. David’s abandon, while repugnant to the adults around him, was not repugnant to God. And it is notable that this demonstration of celebration, not unlike a response of delight we might see in a child, is purposefully recorded in the Scriptures. When we experience answers to prayer, particularly prayers we have invited the children to share, we can encourage and match their free expression of excitement. May it inform not only our own response to prayer, but establish a lifetime of celebration in the hearts and lives of the children to whom we minister. Is Your Sunday School Family Friendly?

WHEN salespeople want you to buy machines and equipment, they use the word friendly because they know you may be afraid of new technology. Facing change is like walking into a strange country, so they tell you a computer is “user friendly.” Adjusting within the present tumult of changing family values and customs may be like a first computer experience. We are on alien ground. We thought a family was dad, mom, and the kids living together. Probably grandparents were somewhere, and a few aunts and uncles. Our concept of family, as ministered to by the church and Sunday School, was a nuclear family. Now many of us suffer a kind of culture shock. However, we need to find new ways of ministering to people who are not part of a nuclear family. We can start toward this goal as we understand the biblical concept of family.

Include Everyone

Unlike the American nuclear model, the scriptural family includes all persons biologically related. Furthermore, it extends its blanket of love and protection to servants born in the household. Kinship is both privilege and responsibility, and hospitality (receiving) is another name for home. From the New Testament, we learn that all of us can have at least two families. We are instructed to accept and honor our families of origin, and through Jesus, to become members of Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family. Therefore, when we speak of â&#x20AC;&#x153;the family,â&#x20AC;? we must avoid the impression that we leave out singles, the elderly, estranged, or disconnected persons. If we act according to His purpose, God will give us grace to be honest and comfortable when we minister to children and adults whose family situations do not seem ideal. We can have warm, friendly Sunday Schools where no one feels unwelcome because of family conditions or changes.

Talk about families. Tell something about your family and ask the class to tell you about theirs. From early childhood to late adulthood, people like to relate experiences, such as family trips, birthday parties, and funny happenings or mishaps. Suggest that the class prepare a display board for posting snapshots and photographs of family and family events. Most groups have fun with this family album project. More importantly, it helps the teacher emphasize family values and discover ways to meet changing needs. It also shows everyone who enters the room that this place is friendly to families.

Very young children like to help the teacher make the bulletin board. Older children and adults may be eager to use their arts-and-crafts skills. Be sure the board is large enough so everyone can contribute, and it will be a significant feature in your room. Suggest that each member post family pictures, including noncustodial parents. Celebrate events such as a new baby, a wedding, or a visit from out-of-town relatives by posting new pictures. Display news clippings about births, weddings, graduations, deaths, or awards, community or military service, or whatever else is meaningful to class members. (If someone asks, assure the class that pets may be considered family.)
