About Historic Savannah Foundation HSF Board of Trustees Staff

Our 2017 Festival Cover This year’s cover artwork was created by Savannah Arts Academy student Mary Sinsheimer. Last May while in her 10th grade year, Sinsheimer was honored as the high school winner of the Pennies for Preservation Poster Contest under the direction of Art teacher Steve Shetski. Sinsheimer’s artwork highlights the portico of an historic Savannah home, and was selected as the featured image for the widely promoted 2017 Savannah Preservation Festival.

The 2017 Savannah Preservation Festival is organized by:

WELCOME TO

Savannah THANK YOU Preservation Festival to our sponsors and patrons

There’s more to life than _______ (fill in the blank). If we apply the transitive property of equality, then there’s more to Savannah than the Landmark Historic District. I’m not sure that’s actually the proper use of the transitive property (I could ask my college roommate—the math major who is now an actuary and making big bucks), but I can identify a digression when I see one…and that was a digression…so let’s get back on track! The fact is, there is more to Savannah than the Landmark Historic District…and we’re going to show you during this year’s Pres Fest. Yes, we are going to feature Jones Street during our Wine Tasting and Home Tour, but we’re also going to throw a big ol’ Block Party at Guerry Lumber…just south of Victory Drive and the railroad tracks on Barnard Street. We’re going to have live music, food & drink, educational exhibits, and skilled craftspeople on-site…and it’s free and open to the public. In addition, HSF will host the Preservation Awards Luncheon where you can see and meet who is doing great restoration work all around Savannah. And, we’re offering the Louise Lauretti Lecture Series where we will hear from Julia Bache—a Girl Scout (recipient of the Gold Award) and college student at the University of Pennsylvania. Julia is a national figure in Girl Scouts and Historic Preservation (she spoke when the National Trust conference was in town a couple of years back). She will share her thoughts on the role of young women in the future of the preservation movement.

Early check-in will begin at 5:30 PM. Upon check-in you will receive a map of the tour and overview of the selected wines. Named after Major John Jones of Liberty County, GA, the brick paved street is bounded by East Broad and Tattnall Streets. The majority of the structures lining its walkways date between the 1850s and 1860s, with some pioneer structures near Madison Square built in the 1840s. After a period of decline, HSF became involved in the 1960s in the revitalization of Jones Street utilizing its Revolving Fund. In the early 1990s HSF once again focused on this street, this time targeting the 500 block of East Jones, which is part of the Beach Institute neighborhood. The area is comprised of one-story and two-story frame Victorian working-class houses, which are raised on brick piers and have a single bay porch with entablatures supported by square posts. The houses are usually found to be detached duplexes and row houses, which may have high pitched roofs and dormer windows.

louise lauretti lecture:

The Lauretti Foundation

Louise Lauretti loved Savannah, especially its history and architecture. She passed away just prior to accepting a seat on HSF’s Board of Trustees, but her family wanted to honor her memory by sponsoring a lecture series. HSF uses this platform to focus on the key role women play in preservation—in Savannah and across the country Julia Bache, national speaker, Girl Scout Gold Award Recipient, and a National Young Woman of Distinction, is the keynote speaker for this year’s Louise Lauretti Lecture..

Julia has been recognized as a national youth leader in the field of historic preservation. She is the recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution Historic Preservation Award and Pittenger American History Scholarship. As a Girl Scout from 1st through 12th grade, Julia learned the importance of community service and leadership. She earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting, for her work to preserve the historically significant yet endangered Rosenwald Schools and successful listing of the Buck Creek Rosenwald School in the National Register of Historic Places. At age 15, Julia became the youngest person in Kentucky to nominate a site listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Her Gold Award Project was selected as one of the top 10 projects in the nation in 2014. Outside of her Gold Award Project, she has completed other large-scale research projects and preservation work. She is now building her skill set by earning a degree in business. Julia is a student in the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also earning a minor in history. Julia is a University Scholar and loves continuing her studies outside of the classroom by conducting her own research. She is researching the operations, finances, management, and marketing strategies of nonprofits and historic house museums.

Please join us for a reception following the lecture courtesy of our sponsor.

Preservation awards luncheon

The annual Preservation Awards program plays an important role in fulfilling HSF’s mission of advocacy, education and community involvement by highlighting the projects, and the people behind them, that keep our city vibrant and progressive. The review process is extremely competitive. A jury of local experts from various disciplines within the community meets and scrutinizes nominations. The jury seeks to honor projects that make a difference and represent a variety of interests throughout Savannah and Chatham County using three primary criteria of: quality and degree of difficulty; impact on the community; and the degree to which the project or effort is unusual or pioneering, or serves as an example that influences good preservation practices in others. In addition to a number of project winners, three special awards will be given: the President’s Award, the Lee and Emma Adler Award for Advocacy and the Nichola Parker Coe Volunteer of the Year Award.

About

board members

historic savannah foundation Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF) is a non-profit organization sustained by dedicated supporters, volunteers and staff. HSF’s mission is to preserve and protect Savannah’s heritage through advocacy, education and community involvement. HSF was established in 1955 to save the 1820 Isaiah Davenport House from demolition. Seven visionary Savannah women - Katherine Judkins Clark, Elinor Adler Dillard, Anna Colquitt Hunter, Lucy Barrow McIntire, Dorothy Ripley Roebling, Nola McEvoy Roos and Jane Adair Wright – joined forces to raise $22,500 to purchase the Davenport House. The house was saved, HSF was formed, and the preservation movement was off and running in Savannah. Historic Savannah Foundation launched its Revolving Fund in 1960, which has since saved nearly 370 buildings…not just in the Landmark Historic District but throughout several of Savannah’s historic districts. The organization has earned national acclaim for its creative, strategic approach to preservation. HSF is one of the most respected local preservation organizations in the country, emphasizing not only the protection of individual historic buildings but also the revitalization of blighted neighborhoods. Instead of being a reactive, crisis-oriented organization, HSF is a credible civic-minded organization that works proactively to save the city’s heritage. HSF proves that the cultural, social and a economic benefits of preservation are good public policy. For more information about HSF, visit myHSF.org .
