Research
The goal: How can we create an innovative experience that enables and empowers giving?
What’s out there?
The most common ways to give
Volunteering - Time, skills towards a cause they support ie. senior centers, community, organizing (Food Co-ops) – cooperative efforts to buy food in volume to distribute to co-op members Charity - donating money Tackling Issues in - Health and medicine, Environmental problems, poverty Sponsoring - Educational programs, social welfare, disaster relief Homeless & Housing - Building homes
Pain Points
Often misunderstood
Short term fixes Reactive Approach Social services Transactional change
Long term solutions Proactive Approach Social change Transformational Change
Pain Points
What are the pain points in the experience of an individual trying to help? Their donation is too small to make a difference Donations don’t help the people who need the most aid “I don’t have enough time and volunteer schedules are too inflexible” “I don’t have enough information and most volunteer roles aren’t Interesting” “I inquired about an opp., but never heard back.” “Icouldn’t find an opportunity that fit my schedule” “The organization was asking too much from me” “I don’t need another commitment right now” “I don’t have the money to give to others”
Pain Points
What are the pain points in the experience of an individual/group receiving help? Certain communities often get overlooked, and not considered so they dont receive the help they need because some people get more focused on helping widespread over locally Based on where people are located, locally there may not be enough resources
Opportunities
Rethinking spaces outside of the philanthropic realm Thinking about places/ways that people come together that is not just in the volunteering/giving space. Ex: work, school, farmers markets, festivals, etc How can something be implemented in common places/public? How can we take inspiration from games to create something immersive and interesting that engages people to help? People often talked about how the current opportunities did not match their interests, and on weekends people enjoyed spending time with friends How can a new way of giving be inspired by this to create a more interesting, collaborative, immersive, etc experience
Opportunities
Qualities of the individuals helping
Analyzing the different demographics of the individuals who are helping and using their strengths, baby boomers offer wisdom and experience, while millenials are more adapt to implementing new ways of tech, and are more willing to tackle issues that generations in the past have shied away from.
Opportunities
Implementation in daily life
Finding time is hard for people, how might we analyze people’s daily lives and see where their free time is? - Where does it go? - How can philanthropy be rethinked that it could fit into your daily life? - When interviewing people often times they talked about not having free time, so how can something be implemented that feels more like apart of their routine and not something that requires them to rely on other people’s time and energy? - Most people have a similair schedule in commuting, working, and going somewhere, how can something be considered in those spaces?
Opportunities
Having a problem solver mindset Philanthropy is all about problem solving, and coming up with long term solutions to complex problems. Bringing people together of different skills like a designer, an engineer, marketing, etc to tackle different issues. Within these spaces often times people will focus to far and wide, while it’s actually more effective to focus on your local community. As well as taking inspiration from the idea of IDEOs design kit book that gives helpful tools and exercises for people to implement design thinking.
