Editors Note “Love is just a word until someone comes along and gives it meaning.” ~ Author Unknow

Welcome to Kokoa Magazine this month is Valentines so we will be focusing on the good and the bad of love. In this issue we are talking about the love of giving, the love of animals, and how love don’t cost a thing. We also will celebrate the color red in more ways than one. Welcome to our 3rd issue I hope you find some inspiration for yourself. Love is a funny word. It means nothing without the action behind it. Anyone can say that they love you but do they mean it. Do they feel it? Do they see it? I need someone who can understand even the dustiest corners of my mixed up soul. Someone who accepts me in the good and bad. They say love is hard to find but if you love yourself then you have found the best love you can ever have. Loving things is another problem a lot of people have. We can’t take it with us when we leave this earth and it can be replaced people can’t. Remember, love with your heart, mind, body, and spirit.

Love Don’t Cost A Thing Latorsha

Many moons ago, I was young, dumb, and “in love”. I was dating one of those guys that seemed to be “that” guy. You know handsome, popular, had a car, and from a “good” family background. Little did I know I would be in for a rude awakening!

Hot Topic<<< 05

I was always looking out for him and his needs. I sacrificed a lot for him. Did he do the same for me? Nope. Nada. Not at all. Did he love me? Well, he said he did. LIES! I tell you! F%^&IN% LIES! My apologies for that. Let’s move on. I will spare you all the gory details of our teenage love, but I thought I had it all like many young girls experiencing “love”. I had my head so far up in the clouds I couldn’t see what was going on right before my eyes. Life was roses, so I thought. Now happily married, not to that guy, I can confirm hindsight is 20/20.

During those earlier years in life when I was dating “that” guy, I remember talking with his dad one day. He was a very honest man and always told me the truth even if I didn’t want to hear it. That day, he said to me you both think you are so in love. Oh course, I was all giggly and expressed my dying love for his son. He just looked at me and said, Honey, love don’t pay the bills. That day, I thought he must be going senile and had no clue about love and romance. Today almost fifteen years later that statement still speaks boldly to me and I can still see the expression on his face when he looked in my eyes so sincerely. AND now I finally get it! Damn straight! Love don’t pay the bills! In relationships, you need a partner in for ALL areas of life, not just in the romance department. I have learned since that day that you need to have someone that can bring something to the table and I’m not talking about an appetite! I’m talking about someone who can support the relationship in many ways and being able to lift the other when times get hard. This person can be the breadwinner, if needed, able to support himself and to share the responsibilities in the relationship. Some people think love will save the day. Yes, I used too. But now I know better. In life you need a mate, who can take charge when you are down. I’ve always been very independent and able to take care of myself for the most part. However, when I couldn’t it was imperative that I had someone by my side that could help me stay strong and not drag me down. Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t all about finances but let’s be honest most things in life are not free and many arguments in relationships and marriages spin from concerns about money and paying bills. No, we don’t need an overabundance to survive because if we did I’d still be single. But like I mentioned before we need someone who can bring something to the table. I am thankful today that I have the best of both worlds, and I didn’t end up supporting someone who couldn’t take care of himself. My husband of ten years is a great lover, wonderful provider, and contributes to the household in many ways. And for that I am so thankful. As we enter the month of celebrating cupid and love let’s remember that love is a beautiful thing. BUT LOVE. DOES NOT. PAY THE BILLS. So let’s get this conversation started. Is love, all by itself, enough to hold a relationship together? If not, what do you add to the relationship to ensure it has the potential to last?

This widely celebrated holiday isn’t just for love birds. Single ladies can get in on the action too. Is this not perfect for a night out with the girls? Love of Fashion Valentine’s Day comes with lots of love, affection, and anxiety. While you might be stressing over what gift to buy the sweetheart in your life, one thing you shouldn’t be worrying about is what you’re going to wear. It doesn’t matter if you’re spending a romantic night out on the town or kicking back having drinks with the girls – there’s a chic, no-fuss outfit for that. Shopping for the ideal ensemble should be a last resort. Take inventory of your closet and remix the barely worn (or unworn!) pieces you already have. If you do end up heading to the mall, buy separates that can be worn again after the big night. Here are a couple of looks to spark some inspiration. And did I mention they’re under $100?!

LadySonya

Atlanta, Georgia

Name: LadySonya Occupation: Entrepreneur, Pianist/Instructor -LadySonya Music Studio LLC., Mentor, Motivational Speaker One word to describe you: Determined Hobbies: I enjoy being innovative, teaching and playing the piano, socializing, reading, organizing my calendar (LOL) and just starting new things. One thing you have learned in life: I’ve learned you can TRULY be and do whatever you put your mind to. Anything is possible to a willing heart. Website: Personal: www.iamladysonya.com Piano Lessons www.ladysonyamusic.com Women’s Organization www.ladyuniversity.org Company Mission Statement: The mission of Lady University is to build character, confidence, and culture through empowering young girls (age 8-17, grades 3rd to 11th) and women to be leaders, visionaries, and high-achievers.

10 >>> Organization

1. Why did you want to create your organization? In 2008 I became a piano instructor. In 2009 deciding to market my business teaching piano I began teaching more younger kids. It was an experience I would never forget. The girls would come to piano lessons and talk about school, life, relationships or whatever was on their mind and I would listen. I began to think of ways to talk to the girls outside of piano lessons. My first thought was to start a mentoring or consulting firm. I brainstormed at 2010 and in 2011 the name came, Lady University a mentoring program for girls and Networking Organization for women. 2. What are some of the main goals for the organization? As for the mentoring program, the main goal is to build a redefined lifestyle for the girls. Lady University offers quarterly programs to include: Quarter 1: Beauty, Brains and Personality Quarter 2: Character and Self-esteem Quarter 3: Leadership, Money and Service Quarter 4: Vision and Dreaming

01. Organization<<< 11

3. In what ways have this organization’s products and services been most successful over the years? Lady University is fairly new. We actually hosted our 1st Open House on November 29th, 2012 and we’re planning our Official Launch Party the 1st week of February 2013. 4. What is your background and how did you progress to your present position? My background is in Music. I started piano at the age of 9. As for the progress to this present position, I’d say I stepped out on faith. In the summer of 2012 I wrote a to-do list and by November everything was checked off. I wrote another to-do list in December and I’m working on checking things off now. I’m amazed at how far Lady University has grown in just 6-months. There’s so much to come. 5. Do you face opposition? In addition, how do you deal with them? I have not faced any opposition with others. As for with myself, at first I was afraid to take steps and the more I crossed things off my to-do list the more afraid I got. To deal with it, I basically spoke affirmations and prayed for guidance, strength and will power. 6. How does your company differ from other organizations? Lady University is such a unique organization. We’re set apart with our mentoring program along with networking organization. Our Mentoring Program isn’t based on one issue. It’s a year-round program to tackle various needs and issues with young girls today. The networking organization is an unique entity as well given the women not only build personal and business relationships, they are also given the opportunity to mentor the girls in the organization. Lady University is a beautiful sisterhood, I wish I had something like this when I was a teen.

12 >>> Organization

7. How has your organization adjusted to the down economy? We’re actually just starting out so I can’t really justify this question. 8. What are some future goals? There are so many future goals for Lady University. One major goal is to tour city to city spreading the word about Lady University. We have a great following outside of the Metro Atlanta area. I’d love for Lady University to be a world-wide organization. 9. If you could change one thing about this company what would it be? I’m loving every aspect of Lady University. I’d love for more people to experience this sisterhood. 10. What advice would you give to someone who may want to start an organization? Advice I’d give is to start small but always dream big. Set goals daily, weekly, monthly and so on. Stay on your brand. Do research and most of all, do it from the heart!

Instagram, the popular photo sharing application, has created an ecosystem of successful companies. You can have your photos printed on cell phone cases, t-shirts, coffee mugs, stickers, posters, books, pillows, purses, coasters and everything else. We wanted to become a part of that ecosystem and be able to create a unique product that people can enjoy daily. People spend an enormous amount of time in their cars, and the options are limited when it comes to “good looking air fresheners. We want to give people options while providing another source to enjoy their photographs and memories. Some of the main goals for 2013 are to expand our product line and add a design application to our website. We would like to offer a variety of shapes and sizes of air fresheners, add 10-25 more fragrance options and allow customers to create their own fragrance. The design application will allow users to drag and drop their photos, zoom in and out on photos, crop their photos, add borders and text, and offer different layouts. Business expansion is our ultimate goal, and this will be accomplished through customer satisfaction, an increase in client base, and production numbers that warrant hiring additional personnel. I have an extensive and varied background from framing houses, to litigation support, to print and production. I have always had a passion for creating new and innovative products along with owning my own business. Jessica has a background in printing, graphics, and production as well and a love for photography. She is known as the paparazzi in her family and is always sure to capture the moment. While driving to work one day, I was reflecting on all of the companies that offer Instagram printing services. My eyes turned to the boring, dried up tree air freshener and thought why not put the two together. The Instafreshener idea was born. We have faced opposition from day one. We did a great deal of research: what materials were needed, what equipment to use, what inks would hold up to the fragrance oil without bleeding or distorting the images, and, most importantly, funding for our start-up. We endured countless hours of testing and experienced many failures until we succeeded in developing the perfect combination to produce Instafresheners. We tried crowdfunding to raise money, and this failed. Therefore, we made some personal sacrifices to obtain money to purchase equipment and materials. Our next objective was to create our sale plan, develop the website, address shipping and accounting issues, and all other startup company issues. The point is we just did it! We figured it out, and there was no stopping us! If we were able to create something from an idea and turn it into a revenue-generating business, anyone can! Most other companies who make air fresheners use the process of screen printing, and only bulk orders are taken. Our company differs from others through our unique process to produce a customized air freshener at an affordable price for the everyday consumer. Our air fresheners are made with the highest ratio of fragrance oil, and the length of the aroma outlasts other leading brands. We also offer fragrance spray so customers can recharge their personalized air fresheners to last month after month. Our company is new. We have only been operational for four months, so we have not really been affected by the down economy. We have had great success with orders, especially during the holidays. No one knows what will happen with the economy in the future, but we continue to contribute through the production of our product and trust in the Lord. We would love to allow artist, photographers, or anyone else to be able to sell their art on their own Instafresheners and make a kick back. Another thing we want to do is get more involved with home/trade/craft shows and become proficient at producing created product on the spot. In addition, we would like to be promoted on other websites, such as Statigr.am, as a printing vendor. 2013 is going to be an exciting year for us. Business <<< 17

How We Met by Tiffany Name: Tiffany Williams Occupation: educator One word to describe you: hilarious Hobbies: scrapbooking, shopping, reading One thing you have learned in life: it may not go the way you want but make the best of it

18 >>> Love

Tiffany’s Version- Reggie and I met in a parking lot. True Story!!! It was the night of Rena’s (my best friend)

bachelorette party and we were going to a party at Tutto Italiano’s (a restaurant/ bar) on Congress in Chicago. Reggie was in the parking lot going to the same party and he needed change for parking. I completely ignored him. I felt like he was going to cramp our style. He ended up crashing our night and indeed cramping our style :) Due to my friends giving him the change he needed, he felt and found it necessary to buy us a round of drinks. I found it to be very extra and wasn’t giving him the time of day. Then I looked at him and the phrase -The Rest is History- completely applies. However, he remembers the story a bit differently.

Reggie’s Version

- The night I met Tiffany, my friend could not make the party at Tutto Italiano’s and I was going to leave. Because I was home from Las Vegas and didn’t want to waste the night in the house, I decided to go to the party solo. Great idea. As I searched for change for the parking box, three young ladies pulled up behind me. I asked the ladies if they had any singles and they helped me out. All but one of them. As a thank you for their help I offered to buy them a round of drinks. Once inside we all hit it off with jokes, drinks and dancing. Soon after we were there I realized Tiffany was a great young lady. So great, we went to another party. The cool part about that was she actually rode in the truck with me, while her girls followed. I gave her best friend my driver’s license so she wouldn’t think I would kidnap her girl. After the party Tiffany and I sat in the truck talking until six o’clock in the morning. I called her later that morning because I just had to see her again. Now I get to see her everyday for the rest of my life and I am so happy.

The Love of giving back Brayden started asking questions two years ago when he was in Kindergarten about his friends getting a Christmas and some were not getting a Christmas. That prompted my husband and I to explain to him that sometimes there are children that do not get Christmas because their families simply could not afford it. When he found this out he got huge tears in his eyes and cried for them. He decided at that moment he was going to save his money to make sure 20 >>> Giving

the next year there would be presents for the ones who would not normally get any. Last year he saved $120 and went out and purchased toys and donated them to Toys for Tots. He also wanted to use his money last year to purchase a gift for his little brother too. Ealier this month he reminded my husband and I that he and dad needed to count his saved money. On Friday (November 30th) evening they sat down and started counting to

see how much he had saved for the year. The money that he earns is from getting good grades in school, tooth fairy, and doing chores around the house. By the time they were done counting he totaled out was $160! Saturday Todd and Brayden were going to go cash it in, but the night before we asked what he would like to do with it and he responded he wanted to donate like he did last year.

Counting money

When he told us that he did want to go buy gifts for others it was all I could do to hold back the tears. I’ve always known that Brayd was special but I realized how special he really was at that moment. I do not know many 8 year olds that would want to spend their money that way. He is the typical 8 year old that loves to get gifts but he is also the kind of kid that loves to give and to make sure everyone around him is happy. I am so proud I was chosen to be his mom, I am also so proud our values we have taught him he has taken to the next level and he has shown how selfless, kind, loving, and caring he is Giving back is easy to do. If a child can give back with what he has then as adults we can give back. You don’t need a reason to help people.

Meet Titan he is my favorite pitbull. I have learned a lot from his mommy and he is a cutie pie. . Animals are a part of our familes and we should love them like we love humans. I will let Brenda tell you about Titan. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had animals in my life. Mostly dogs and cats, the occasional rabbit(s), and I think everyone has tried a fish here or there.  Up until a couple years ago, I was more a cat person. Why? Mostly because cats are very low maintenance and very cute! You can leave them some food, water, and a litter box for a weekend if you wanted and they’d be pretty content. Cats are also usually very affectionate, cuddlers, and have a lot of personality. When they’ve had their fill of you, off they go to another room, in a closet, or under a piece of furniture (if they can fit).

Now, I’m very much a dog person. And not just any dog, but a Pit Bull person. Yes, I said that horrible word most of you have heard of, Pit Bull. The most feared and discriminated against animal in the world, and I might add, the most misjudged dog. When I rescued mine in 2010, he was 1 ½ years old, had two previous homes, and two previous names. He was not potty-trained, had very little training if any, and was not very socialized. What he did have? The most loving and adorable face that only a Momma could love; Personality that put an instant smile on my face; and kisses that warmed my heart. Dogs in general are loyal to their masters. Pit Bulls will go above and beyond. They

26 >>> Love

will fight to the death to save their master. Their loyalty and unconditional love is overwhelming. Their mission, to please their master. A well-trained pit bull will listen to its master. Ever wonder why pit bulls are used in dog fights? Because they will listen/obey what their master says. It’s not that they are born fighters. They are born loyal and loving. Pit Bulls should not be feared. Their Owners should. An Irresponsible Owner makes a Pit Bull or any animal for that, bad. Loving my pit bull (American Bulldog/American Staffordshire) comes naturally. I don’t have to work on it like a marriage. It’s just there. I wake in the morning to him sleeping beside me. I roll over and hug him and get kisses back.

This is LOVE my friends. Unconditional Love. A love like no other yet can only be found in dogs (especially pit bulls). The next time you hear of an incident involving a pit bull, just remember, chances are they are simply doing what their master taught them to do. They aren’t born bad. They are born lovers and cuddlers. Hi, I’m Brenda and I’m in Love with my Pit Bull. He loves me unconditionally and would die for me. I love him unconditionally and would give my life defending him. I am a VOICE for pit bulls, especially my own. The one true love I know.

Growing up as a little girl I remember always hearing people say, “There’s nothing like a mothers love.” I always wondered what that meant. I remembered thinking it means my mom loves my 2 sisters and I more than anything and she’ll always be there for us. That was my though process until my mom chose to love something else more than she loved her children. She could 30 >>> LIFESTYLE

no longer take care of us and Because of her poor choices for sometime my sisters and I were spit up into foster care. We were neglected and placed in places that children should not be placed. My father couldn’t care for us so my aunt adopted my two sisters and I and taught us to the best of her ability what it meant to have a mothers love. I didn’t realize it was a lot more than what I

could ever realize. Looking back I remember feeling unloved and I didn’t know how to really love myself. I grew up insecure and always questioning myself. I remember yearning for something that I felt I needed not knowing or finding what it was that I was missing. Going into my teenage years I still had this same feeling. I began dating and entered into a serious relation-

ship. At 19, I gave birth to my first son. I was unable to graduate high school on time because I was ill during the beginning of my pregnancy. I missed more than 21 days of school so I wasn’t allowed to walk with my graduating class. I was crushed because it disappointed my aunt and my sisters.

A Mothers Love My pregnancy was difficult. I went into premature labor twice and had to be given medication to stop my preterm labor. Preterm labor was scary because I knew my baby was not developed fully. I can remember like it was yesterday rubbing my belly talking to my little one telling him it wasn’t safe to come into this world. I had to wear a Trabutaline pump at 34 weeks. My son was born at 37 weeks, healthy and happy. Still at that point I felt unloved and unsure, but when I looked into my son’s eyes nothing else mattered. My oldest son Andre was my everything. I did everything I could to make ends meet. I remember working jobs I hated because I wanted him to know that I loved him and if no one else was there I was going to be there for him no matter what. I ended my relationship with Andre’s dad because it was very unhealthy. I felt I wouldn’t be providing him with a growing environment if I stayed in that situation. His words were no longer nice and his actions showed “WE” were not a priority. I think it was then I started really understanding a, “Mothers Love”. I started working and going back to school. I had to earn 2.5 credits in a summer program to enter back into high school to get my diploma. I had to walk to school with a backpack, diaper bag stroller and baby. I walked to the transit station then caught a bus and the had to walk 35 minutes to go back to school 5 days a week. Then drop my baby off to a babysitter to go to work. Tired was an understatement for how I felt. The love I had for my child kept me going. My desire to make him happy kept one foot in front of the other. Time passed and still things was hard for me. But on the light side I graduated high school and went directly into my freshman year of college. Now It’s 2013 and I’m still not with my Associates Degree. I’ve been going to school and working as much as possible because money is always scarce when you don’t make enough. In 2007 my arm was crushed in a freight elevator door while working. I had to have 2 surgeries to correct the damage but everything could not be repaired. Everyone said I carried around with me a million dollar arm. Little did people know I was into much debt from not being able work that the money that was awarded to me covered my debt and settled because my son and I was about to be living in my car. During that time I entered into another relationship that led me down a path that would further explain what a mothers love really meant. December 11, 2009 my water broke unexpectedly at 11:00pm. I was entering into my 30th week of pregnancy. It was a hard, long scary road because I was then enrolled into college trying to finish school. I was 1 class and my externship away from becoming a Medical Assistant. I just made the Dean’s List and was going though a very difficult time in life. My doctor told me to put school on hold until my baby was born because she discovered I had a hematoma and that there was a extra empty amniotic sac which was causing me to bleed. I thought things were complicated and difficult but quickly found out that it was far from what difficulties lied ahead. Rushed to Huron Hospital I found out that I indeed was in labor. But not active labor. I wasn’t dilated and there were no contractions. Just room for fear. Fear of death and uncontrollable emotional pain. There were tears of knowing that my oldest son was my everything and reason for living but now the life of my unborn child’s life is hanging in the balance. I was transferred from Huron Hospital to Rainbow Babies and Children of Cleveland. I was admitted still without going into active labor. A ultrasound that was performed showed that my unborn child was in my womb with low amniotic fluid and not practicing taking breaths. I was told then that I needed an emergency caesarean. Those words seemed to go in slow motion but everything else was a fast blur. I didn’t have time to prepare in any way for this. I was rushed into this light blue room cold and quiet . Then people I’ve never met came in rushed in loudly. They were talking quick fast and in medical terms. Little did they know I understood what they were saying. I was given a spinal that did not work instantly. When the doctor started to incise my belly I felt it. It was quick sharp pains that was so intense I wanted to die. All I could do was scream in pain and agony. I yelled that I could feel what they were doing. I was given some medication that put me into a light sleep. I was told I briefly kissed my child before the rushed him to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. But none of that was a recognition in my mind. A memory I do not have.

I was able to visit my son after the rest of the medication the doctors gave me during my cesarean wore off. When I went into my son Johnny’s room which was Sunshine-pod room 22, I remember walking into his room seeing his isolette and a small something inside. My little son was only in a diaper that was made for newborns but was way to big for his little but. He reminded me of a skeleton with skin. His cry sounded like a runt kitten and his pain grew in me. I couldn’t touch him. I didn’t get to hold him for weeks. I watched him go through gruesome testing Now 3 years old and diagnosed with PDD-NOS, SPD, and having to attend regular Occupational,Speech and Physical Therapy sessions Johnny is a happy little one. He still has a lot medically going on but he is strong. I love him so much. Loving my children the way I do pushes me when I feel I can’t take another step. Loving them makes me ask for help even though I have had the doors closed in my face many times. Things are still hard for me as I deal, with my own illnesses now. I’ve been diagnosed with a slow growing brain tumor that can’t be biopsied because of where it is. I can hardly work and I suffer from a severe case Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. Some days I can hardly walk or speak but because I want my children to know that I love them I keep going. I still reach out and ask for help. Search for help. I wanted to share my story in hopes of inspiring other women and to touch others who may be going through what I’m going through. To let them know that someone can relate and they not alone. To share that a mothers love will give you strength. It will carry you on a weak day. A mothers love is something you don’t get all at once but it grows over time and it gives when no one else will. Name: Deida Massey Occupation: Celebrity Makeup Artist/Founder and Executive Director of Reel Beauty, Inc./Motivational Speaker/Radio Personality One word to describe you: FEARLESS Hobbies: The spa, traveling, reading One thing you have learned in life: To consult, seek and put GOD first! Website: www.reelbeautyinc.com Company Mission Statement: Reel Beauty is a 501 (c) (3) organization that provides proven self-esteem workshops to young women that will assist them to become productive citizens within their environment as they rediscover their beauty inside out.

1. Why did you want to create your organization? I wanted to mentor young women who struggle with self-esteem and self-worth issues and teach them to find their own identity & beauty within. While advocating for abused & neglected children when I worked as a paralegal, I encountered a young women who was emancipated from the system and used prostitution as a means to care for her younger siblings who were still entrapped in the system. I saw how she was compromising her self-esteem and as a result I wanted to help restore and show her how to value herself.

2. What are some of the main goals for the organization? In the past, we have sponsored RBI in Africa and currently we are working on expanding our program internationally. We would like to expand our program in other countries i.e. Haiti, Jamaica, etc. It is our goal to reach more girls globally with our services.

In addition, we are continuing to build and saturate locally, here in Chicago. We are working to prepare an “I AM BEAUTIFUL” conference nationally. Finally, in the next three years we are transitioning Reel Beauty, Inc. into Reel Beauty Enterprises. This will consist of a Reel Beauty application made for smart phones, a publishing, cosmetic and production company.

3. In what ways have this organization’s products and services been most successful over the years? Our services have been successful for five years working with teen girls teaching them the importance of self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence. Within our curriculum we also teach our girls how to resolve conflicts peacefully inside Chicago Public Schools. As a result, we have prevented and resolved conflicts among teen girls through our proven workshops. In addition, we teach girls the importance of unity among one another and how to affirm each other positively.

4. What is your background and how did you progress to your present position? I worked as a paralegal advocating for abused and neglected children for five years. I received a Masters of Jurisprudence from Loyola School of Law in Child and Family Law. It was while advocating for abused & neglected children I saw a need and wanted to specifically work with young women.

5. Do you face opposition? In addition, how do you deal with them? I think in any business you build or grow there will be opposition. At times, I have to prove the value of my business. I wouldn’t necessarily say its opposition, but a challenge that helps to improve our services.

6. How does your company differ from other organizations? Reel Beauty is unique because our proven curriculum which is patent and trademark is custom. Every name of our workshop is named synonymous to the girls we service. For instance, “Priceless Pearls” and “Diamonds in the Ruff” are names I chose to describe our teen girls. Finally, our workshops are activity based and were uniquely created by myself and the consultants who help facilitate our curriculum.

7. If you could change one thing about this company what would it be? There is absolutely nothing I would change about Reel Beauty.

8. What does Beauty mean to you? Beauty is skin deep and reel beauty starts within.
