There are creations galore to be seen at Lakenenland Sculpture Park. Walk the park or drive through to see dinosaurs, sunflowers, aliens, all made of scrap metal! Everyone’s going to get a kick out of this wacky and wonderful stop. If the weather’s nice, take a stroll through the bog walk.

Falls are the foundation of the full Marquette experience and Morgan Falls is just the one for the whole family. Just south of the city, this 20-foot waterfall is easily accessible and has cascades you need to see.

Presque Isle Park is loved by visitors and locals alike and it’s no wonder why with its 2-miles of scenery to be enjoyed during any season as well as splendid views of Superior. You’ll dig the drive there, along Lakeshore Boulevard, just as much. Keep your eyes peeled for the notorious rare white deer who sometimes stroll through the park.

Want to climb a mountain but make sure your whole crew can come too? Marquette’s got you covered. Sugarloaf Mountain offers a more mild trek to the top than most, but there’s nothing mild-mannered about the sweet view of our city and Lake Superior from the summit. You can even spot the peaks of some of our other remarkable mountains.

LUNAR LOAF Just across from Wetmore Landing lies Lunar Loaf—with a view of not only an expansive treeline but Mother Superior and the wondrous Hogback Mountain. This spot will have you and your pup exploring every inch to the top.

TOURIST PARK Is your pup looking for a playmate? You’re sure to find other fluffy friends at Tourist Park, Marquette’s most popular destination for dog owners. Only 2.5 miles from downtown Marquette, this picturesque location is perfect for a slow stroll or a puppy play date.

THOMAS ROCK You’ll both enjoy this leisurely trail that leads to quite the sight of the Keweenaw Peninsula and an expansive tree canopy. Visit during the fall for an exquisite view of the U.P.’s autumnal array.

SOUTH BEACH Looking for a spot both you and your dog can spend a Marquette summer's day? Check out South Beach. Stick to the right-hand side of this sandy shore, just two miles from downtown, for a beach day where you can both cool down.

VISTA VIEWS SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN Whether it’s your first trip to Marquette or your fifth, Sugarloaf Mountain is always on the must-visit list. This halfmile hike is a mere 15 to 30 minutes to the top, depending on which way you take, but both routes lead you to the same sweet view.

WOODSY WALKS TOURIST PARK TRAILS Looking for something leisurely that doesn’t lack scenery? Start at the tourist park trailhead (part of the Noquemanon Trail Network), then meander through the tree-lined trails, and along the Dead River Basin.

PRESQUE ISLE PARK HOGBACK MOUNTAIN The first thing you should know about Hogback—for such a prominent peak—making it to its summit isn’t a sure thing. Hogback features narrow, twisting trails through woodlands and rocky grounds. With a nearly vertical rock face that demands four points of contact, the last half-mile of the climb is quite strenuous. One thing that is for sure— the view is worth it.

Known for being both short and picturesque, this scenic 2-mile stretch along Superior is easily one of the best. You can walk your way through in all four seasons, or even drive (except during wintertime).

HISTORIC HIKES IRON ORE HERITAGE TRAIL

SUPERIOR SHORELINE WETMORE LANDING BEACH Whether it’s summer, fall, winter, or spring, Wetmore Landing Beach is always a treat. Plus, there are tons of awesome trails to choose depending on your mood. From the parking lot head toward the lake, once you hit the steps, keep to the trails on your right if you’re feeling like a more relaxed pace, or if you want some tougher terrain, try going left.

LITTLE PRESQUE TRACT

The IOHT is a 47-mile, multi-use, year-round interpretive trail. The trail runs through a number of historic Marquette County communities, including Republic, Ishpeming, Negaunee, Marquette, and Harvey. With informational signage and other fun finds along the way you can experience over 160 years of iron mining’s rich history in the Marquette Iron Range.

NORTH COUNTRY TRAIL The NCT traverses seven states from New York to North Dakota. Wetmore Landing, located about a mile north of Sugarloaf Mountain, includes a stellar stretch that delivers spectacular Lake Superior views.

With about 18 miles of hiking trails and over 4 miles of Lake Superior shoreline, you’ll love the Little Presque Tract. If you’re hiking in the summer months, do yourself a favor and pack a beach towel and some bug spray just in case you need them.

Looking for a new way to take in the fall foliage? Catch the colors from a kayak or canoe for the ultimate autumn view. Need a launching point for your adventure? Presque Isle Park, Harlow Lake, and Echo Lake are perfect for a quick paddle. The worse the weather, the better the surf? For some Superior surfers, it seems so. But for those of us who don’t want to brave the winter waves, it’s still worth the brisk walk down to ‘The Zoo’ (at Presque Isle Park) to watch the few who do.

Although spring isn’t always a sure thing in the Upper Peninsula, the melting of the lake’s ice formations makes for some exciting excursions during the short window between winter and summer. Rays or shade, the best way to soak up a summer's day is supping around the island or an inland lake. NOQUEMANON TRAIL NETWORK (NTN) The NTN “North” and “South” trails were designed with all rider styles and skills in mind—flow, technical, jump, freeride, DH, dual slalom, and kids/beginner trails.

RANGE AREA MOUNTAIN BIKE ASSOCIATION (RAMBA) Ranked a Bronze Level IMBA Ride Center, RAMBA boasts miles of trails on the West End with trailheads throughout the Iron Range. Join the club for their famous Wednesday night group rides through Chapper’s Pub in Negaunee for a local taste of the trails.

HARLOW LAKE AREA Featuring some of the Midwest’s most difficult technical riding, many of the HLA trails are set on rock outcrops with punchy, technical climbs and rocky, steep declines. But if you’re up for the challenge, you’ll be rewarded with some incredible vista views.

Q: WHEN AND HOW CAN YOU SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS? A: T he northern lights are driven by solar events on the sun. Check one of the websites referenced for the evenings Kp index, which is an average of solar activity around the world measured in 3-hour increments on a scale of 0-9. At our latitude, a Kp 4 or greater means good odds. With a higher Kp, clear skies, and a few other favorable space weather data indicators, all you need is a good dark sky location facing north. Q: WHERE CAN I SEE THEM IN MARQUETTE COUNTY? A: A ny time the aurora is active low on the horizon, (most common at our latitude) it is best to get away from the city lights of Marquette to a very dark sky location with an unobstructed view of the northern horizon—so anywhere along the lakeshore is fantastic including Little Presque Isle, Presque Isle, and the M28 turnouts. Presque Isle Park is the only dark sky park in the Upper Peninsula and is now open until 1 a.m. every Friday and Saturday night. Street lights in the area are shut off to provide an optimal dark sky viewing area. If the aurora is bright enough, Picnic Rocks, south Marquette and the Welcome Center in Harvey are also easily accessible options. Q: HOW DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH THE NORTHERN LIGHTS? A: As long as you understand a few basics of getting the camera out of auto mode, you can get some awesome shots of the auroras. A basic outline to follow includes A: Lens in manual B: Camera in manual C: ISO setting between 1600-3200 D: aperture as wide open as possible to let in as much light as possible (think low numbers, f1.4,2.8, etc.) E: Shutter speed as long as possible before you start picking up star movement, anywhere from 5-20 seconds. You may have to go longer if you need more light in your images. Other things you need besides your camera—a tripod to steady the shot for long exposure, cable release, and headlight so you can see when you adjust your settings or need to find the bottom of your frame in a new moon environment. That, or I offer several night sky photography workshops during the year!

Q: WHAT CAUSES THE NORTHERN LIGHTS? A: The aurora starts with a strong solar event sending an elevated solar wind of charged particles (electrons) towards Earth. These electrons strike Earth's magnetosphere and travel along magnetic field lines towards the north and south poles where they collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms in Earth's upper atmosphere. The atoms excite, then relax and release a photon, which is light. This is what we see as the aurora borealis. This is similar to how a neon light works. NOTE: Different atmospheric atoms give off different colors when they are excited. Oxygen at about 60 miles up gives off the familiar yellowgreen color, Oxygen at higher altitudes (about 200 miles above us) gives the all-red auroras. Ionized nitrogen produces the blue light and neutral nitrogen gives off the red-purple and the rippled edges.

Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE HOPING TO CATCH THE NORTHERN LIGHTS? A: M aximize your potential for seeing the aurora by learning about space weather predictions from NOAA Space weather! Settle into one of Marquette’s many north-facing dark sky areas and make sure the local forecast is clear as the aurora can’t be seen when there is cloud cover. Most important data readings for determining if you can see the aurora are: • Bz—The strength of the magnetic field, southpointing Bz is favorable • Ovation Model—A real-time image of the auroral oval, look for a hemispheric power of 30 or greater • Solar Wind Speed Measurement—A 600 or greater indicates you’ll most likely be able to see the aurora Also, be aware of the moon phases as a full moon will wash out less active auroral displays and greatly decrease the ability to see the night sky. Be patient if there is geomagnetic storming, it ebbs and flows and you can have multiple substorms in one night with visible activity varying greatly over the span of just a few minutes.

The Father Marquette Statue was dedicated on July 15, 1897, gifted to the city of Marquette from local businessman Peter White. The brass statue was sculpted in Florence, Italy by renowned sculptor Gaetano Trentanove. The Park was redesigned in 2018 to include an arched gateway, stone benches, and perennial gardens.

In 1856, the congregation began meeting in a small wooden structure at this very location. Constructed of Upper Peninsula brownstone, the Morgan Memorial Chapel was built in 1887 featuring a large Tiffany stained glass window. The large, square tower was added in 1902. The houses along E Ridge and E Arch Streets are part of the Marquette historic homes district. Grab a walking tour brochure at the History Center gift store to learn more about the impressive architecture.

Completed in 1904, the library is an example of neoclassical architecture. The Bedford limestone building has a raised foundation, arched windows with decorative keystones and stained glass panels, four Doric columns with an egg and dart design and a hipped roof.

FATHER MARQUETTE STATUE AND PARK

SAVINGS BANK BUILDING Built in 1891 by architects Barber and Barber, this building was a 21st birthday gift for Peter Kaufman from his father, Louis G. Kaufman. The base of the building is Jacobsville sandstone and the upper level is brick. The building is an eclectic mix of architectural styles, with a Gothic clock tower and Romanesque sandstone carvings.

The first structure was built in 1864. The church was destroyed by fire in 1879 and partially destroyed again in 1935. Each time it was rebuilt. The current structure was made with Marquette brownstone and ornate stone carvings. The roof is edged with copper and gold-leaf crosses adorn the church’s two domes. The interior features beautiful stone and marble work with a vaulted ceiling rising to 67 feet. The tomb of Bishop Baraga, known as the “Snowshoe Priest,” is located here.

After a major fire in 1924 destroyed the original bank, Louis G. Kaufman, the fifth president of the bank, donated the present site to rebuild the structure. Ground was broken in 1926. The building is Roman Corinthian in architecture and constructed of buff Indiana limestone. The heavy bronze doors were made in Long Island, New York. The counters are made of solid imported marble. Inside is a satellite exhibit of rare coins and paper bills from the Marquette Regional History Center collection.

MARQUETTE COUNTY COURTHOUSE The Marquette County Courthouse completed in 1904 is a fine example of neoclassical revival architecture. Designed by Charlton and Gilmore of Marquette, the Building is constructed of Portage Entry Sandstone from the Keweenaw Peninsula. The dome ceiling is lined with stained glass. The courthouse has been the site of many well-known trials, including a suit brought by Theodore Roosevelt against an Ishpeming newspaper for slander. He was awarded six cents.

Completed in 1935 after a fire destroyed the original structure, it is constructed of Lannon Stone quarried in Wisconsin and is English Gothic architecture. The windows were modeled after stained glass from the 13th century, known as the Golden Age of Stained Glass. Look for the gargoyle water spouts on the south-facing roof. 9

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 111 E RIDGE STREET

The brownstone building features narrow lancet windows, rounded windows, an arched entrance and asymmetrical hexagonal spires on top of square buttressed towers. It was built by C.F. Struck in 1873.

Two ore docks stand today as reminders of Marquette’s mining and maritime heritage. Though the structure in Lower Harbor is out of commission, the Upper Harbor dock still loads iron ore into freighters just as it has for over a century.
