As a customer, Gretchen Bookeloo-Nahnsen really enjoyed the food and the vibe of the Roadhouse, a Mexican restaurant and bar that Jim Barnes opened in Benzonia back in 1999. But then, after the restaurant was open for just a year and a half, Gretchen learned her favorite place was up for sale. “It was kind of an instant decision,” Gretchen recalls of her purchase of the eatery. She concedes, though, that she was ready for a career change. She had grown up in her dad’s Beulah restaurant, Dogs and Suds, and later Denny’s Bakery and Restaurant (now the Brookside) and she had been wanting to exit the property rental business she had started. “It’s home to me to walk into a restaurant kitchen and smell those restaurant smells,” she says. Gretchen’s “instant decision” was 17 years ago, and the Roadhouse has since become one of Benzie County’s destination family taverns, woven deep into the hearts and appetites of locals and visitors alike, so much so that it was named Business of the Year for 2017. Gretchen loved Barnes’s original concept and the recipes he and chef Miguel Roman developed so much she barely changed a thing. “When I bought it, I didn’t know what an enchilada was, but I just loved what they had done,” she says. “We’ve added a few things along the way and just tweak as we go.” For example, she expanded the deck and added an outdoor bar to the popular summertime hangout spot. The restaurateur is quick to give credit to others for the run of good years. “A lot of our success has to do with our wonderful staff,” she says. Miguel Roman stayed on and has been on the team the whole time. “That consistency has been huge,” she says. Some of the server staff has also been here for more than a decade. Those tenures say much in an industry known for high turnover and short stays. The Roadhouse employs nearly 40 in peak times and scales back to 28 in the shoulder seasons. In summer, the Roadhouse does 350 dinners a night. Of course, Gretchen learned long ago what an enchilada is—important since that is the No. 1 selling item on the menu. Second place goes to the fajitas. “People also love the salsas,” Gretchen says. Both the green and the red are homemade, just like pretty much everything else on the menu—the marinaded meats, the refried beans (tamales are the one item that’s outsourced). “The prep list here is huge,” Gretchen says. The Roadhouse was one of the first regional restaurants to package and sell fresh salsa. Today salsas, tortilla chips, and dressings are packaged for retail sale. Over the years, Gretchen’s daily work has changed as she has been pulled ever more into the business side of things and away from the kitchen and dining room. “Every year it seems we blow away the numbers from the previous year,” she says. And through it all she has only increased her appreciation of her team. “My staff, they fill my well. Every day I realize how important they are.”

BACN COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARD Benzie Area Christian Neighbors was founded 35 years ago, when local churches joined to help alleviate the struggles that families in poverty faced in the county. Today, 35 percent of Benzie’s families are economically vulnerable and occasionally need assistance overcoming a particular hurdle. In fact, most people who access BACN do so only occasionally and at points of economic crisis—to fill a propane tank when somebody has lost a job, to handle a car repair so somebody can keep a job, to buy special work boots so somebody can get a job. Each year BACN serves about 5,000 individuals, providing a measure of stability when doing so can make the difference between hanging on and spiraling down. BACN’s services are especially important in an area with a seasonal economy—and seasonal employment to match. The biggest group BACN serves is the young family. When executive director Gerri VanAntwerp considers moments that really capture the essence of BACN’s mission, she thinks of single moms who are working to complete their General Equivalency Diploma (GED), picturing them doing their homework with their kids at the kitchen table. “They are teaching their kids the value of education. It changes the game for that family,” she says. One “Neighbor”—the term BACN gives to people they assist—was just such a mom. She earned her GED, and will soon be finishing her nursing degree. She was such an inspiration, her daughter also began working on her nursing degree. “That is generational change,” Gerri says. Of course, serving 5,000 people a year takes a great deal of work—60 volunteers a week, each donating four hours, with a total volunteer pool of 130. Theirs are the hands that stock the food pantry, sort clothes, and make repairs, and their ears are the ones that listen and give respectful feedback so each Neighbor’s dignity can remain and be a force in a comeback story.

The partnership of the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance was established on the premise that many common legislative issues impact Northern Michigan businesses and that these issues should be addressed regionally to maximize the political influence of this 12-county chamber alliance and its over 6,500 members. The Alliance partners include the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce, Benzie County Chamber of Commerce, Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce, Charlevoix Area Chamber of Commerce, Gaylord Area Chamber of Commerce, The Lake Superior Community Partnership, Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce, Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce and Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce, all of whom have identified legislative areas that should be monitored and advocated to elected officials on the local, state, and federal levels. The Alliance has also added several associate members, which include the Boyne Area, Cheboygan, East Jordan, Elk Rapids, Harbor Springs and Rogers City Area and Sault Area Chambers of Commerce. The little hospital on the hill offers quality health care, strong collaborations Tom Stobie knows the value of taking the short drive to quality health care on the hill in Frankfort. “It’s very important,” he said. “Every community should have a hospital. We are very fortunate here to have one.” In October he cut a toe with a saw during a construction project and went to Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department to get stitches. Ten days later Tom was in Chicago after traveling from Frankfort to watch his grandson play football. Following a big meal after the game, he was tired from the long road trip and went to bed. He woke up at midnight with what he thought was indigestion. The next morning, his wife drove them home because he still wasn’t feeling well, and the following day, to the Emergency Department to get his stitches removed. Feeling fatigued, Tom asked, “Can you check my vitals? I haven’t been feeling well the last couple of days,’” he recalled. The nurse on duty told him they were going to do an electrocardiogram and put aside his toe for the moment. After the EKG, a physician came in. “He said, ‘Mr. Stobie, you have had a heart attack.’ I was transported to Munson Medical Center by ambulance that day.” He went on to have a heart catheterization and returned to Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital for his cardiac rehabilitation care. How does Tom characterize his experience at the home-town hospital? “It was excellent, and the thing I was impressed about was how quickly they reacted and how caring and professional they were,” he said. Dr. Nancy Reye was recently named Paul Oliver Hospital’s new Emergency Department Medical Director. “We strive to provide friendly, quality, and efficient medical care in a convenient location in the heart of our community. We have a staff of experienced and dedicated nurses, physician assistants, doctors, lab and radiology technicians who ensure exceptional and prompt care,” said Reye. “Through collaborations with Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Michigan, we can ensure access to higher level care when the need arises.”

Paul Oliver recently received recognition from the National Organization of State Office of Rural Health for excellence in health care quality for the second year in a row. The award recognizes top quartile performance among all rural hospitals in the nation. During the past several years, the hospital has also been recognized with the Guardian of Excellence Award by Press Ganey Associates, an award that recognizes hospitals achieving the 95th percentile performance in patient satisfaction. In addition to providing 24/7 Emergency Department services year round, Paul Oliver has state-of-the-art diagnostic services and convenient specialty clinics staffed by Munson Healthcare experts who drive to Frankfort, so patients can stay close to home. Visiting specialists include those in cardiology, dermatology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, physical medicine, and podiatry. Quality Education, Small Classes “Every student. Every classroom. Every day.” The phrase is one that Jeff Tousley, superintendent of Frankfort/Elberta Area Schools, uses as a kind of mantra to help to shape the educational culture in the 475-student district. It’s a saying that emphasizes, ultimately, the moment-by-moment attention needed to nurture good relationships with children, and relationships are what Tousley sees as the key to student success. “We are small enough to look at kids individually, really get to know them, and we feel that kids need strong relationships with teachers if we are to be able to help them do well.” That same sense of small classroom, teacher-student relationship building is evident in Benzie County’s other school district, Benzie Central Schools. Though slightly bigger, at about 1,200 total students, the district’s classroom sizes and teacher ability to know students and their particular needs and strengths are pillars of the district’s success. In both districts, students have access to a wide spectrum of classes, AP classes and extracurricular activities. The districts expand course offerings by tapping into classes offered by the Intermediate School District and online offerings. “Our SAT scores are strong,” Tousley says. Benzie Central’s education results were acknowledged by The Mackinac Center, a conservative Michigan think tank, which ranked all four of Benzie Central’s elementary schools in the top 15 percent statewide; Benzie Central High School has also earned a silver medal

rating from U.S. News and World Report; and the state department of education recently counted Benzie Central among the Top 25 districts that are “beating the odds.” The superintendent of Benzie Central, Matt Olson, sees affirmation of his district’s education in a recent story he heard from parents just back from a ceremony for their son, who was accepted into one of the nation’s premier medical schools. One key benefit that Benzie’s small schools offer is easy access to participation in extracurricular activities. “Basically, children who want to participate can participate,” says Tousley. Unlike large schools, where spots on the basketball team or a role in the spring play are extremely competitive, and many people are cut, small schools rarely have cuts on sports teams, and everybody can find a spot in the play, either on stage or backstage. Such experiences round out and add richness to a student’s school years and give a broader context for life ahead. In addition to strong performance in college prep, both Frankfort/ Elberta and Benzie Central have responded to the now widely acknowledged need to train people for careers in the trades—jobs that do not depend on a traditional college education. The districts share one teacher who offers instruction in traditional shop classes as well as industrial trades like electrical and plumbing.

Northwestern Michigan College For 50 years, Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City has presented quality, close-to-home and affordable opportunities for those seeking post-secondary education. Quality paired with affordability is especially important these days, as education leaders try to contain the spiraling cost of student debt. NMC has earned national renown as one of America’s best community colleges overall and accolades for specific programs like the Maritime Academy, the flight school, nursing program, culinary program and freshwater studies degree. Students wanting a 4-year degree can access NMC’s University Center, which offers select degrees from several of Michigan’s top four-year universities.

Celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2018, the arts organization that gave rise to the Elizabeth Lane Oliver Center for the Arts has long served as the creative heartbeat of Frankfort and its environs. Today the center hosts live performances, art exhibits from local, state and national artists and a full slate of classes year round. Children and adults attend to learn ceramics, painting, drawing, culinary arts, sculpture, writing and more. They operate from one of the Midwest’s most remarkable arts venues, a former U.S. Coast Guard station that was completely renovated to the highest environmental standards, receiving LEED Platinum certification. Within a classic historical exterior, the gallery opens into a dramatic and contemporary exhibit space that smartly evolves to fit the persona of each individual artist’s show. The arts center, by the shores of both Betsie Bay and Lake Michigan, also makes an artful venue for weddings and other special events—yet another way this special building has worked its way into the cultural fabric—and hearts—of the community. One of Northern Michigan’s most captivating and family-friendly art attractions is found within the 30 forested acres that make up the Michigan Legacy Art Park. Visitors take in about 50 sculptures and 30 poetry rocks (i.e., rocks with poetry written on them) that are dotted along two miles of trail winding among rolling hills and towering trees. As the name of the sculpture park suggests, the art connects to Michigan’s deep legacy, commemorating Native Americans, the Great Lakes, settlers, the automobile industry and more. For kids, a favorite sculpture is the Stockade Labyrinth—modeled after a frontier fort and able to be explored—created by the park’s founder and spiritual leader, the late David Barr. The park is an ideal outing for families, since kids can run ahead and explore, and elders can walk along at their own pace and share conversation. The park is adjacent to Crystal Mountain, which sold the land to the nonprofit organization for $1. Heather Caverly had considered the Sleeping Bear shoreline her home away from home for

more than 30 years before she and her husband decided to open an Sleeping Bear Gallery, just blocks from that shore in Empire in 2012. Initially she curated a collection based on 38 artists she’d met while studying at the Center for Creative Studies, in Detroit. Over the years, she’s expanded the number of artists to 100, many of whom hail from Northern Michigan. The gallery has rich offerings in all media—oils, acrylics, water color, metals, gold and silver jewelry, ceramics, pastels, mixed media—at an equally wide range of price, from $6 cards to large oil paintings by renowned artists. Heather intends to offer programs that meld wellness and art, to help others feel art as she has. “Art speaks to the soul,” she says. “It nourishes us. It fulfills us.” Drew Smith earned a national reputation in the nature photography world during the years he served as executive editor of Nature’s Best Photography magazine. These days you can find his captivating photography on display in his studio, Focus Photography, near the waterfront in Frankfort. Drew’s images range from riveting moments of African wildlife and wild horses on Virginia’s coast to backlit American lotus flowers and the stamens of daylilies and impressionistic renditions of forest. Drew still splits his time between Frankfort and Washington, D.C., so check his website or call ahead to catch gallery open times. Gwen Frostic built one of Michigan’s most enduring art fan-bases from a hobbit-like gallery made of stone and tucked into the earth along River Road, between the tiny burgs of Elberta/ Frankfort and Benzonia. From her little shop embraced by nature she illustrated simple but elegant images of the plants and animals she saw in Benzie County—chickadees, plovers, milkweed, grasses and so much more—and printed the images on gift cards and notebooks and other memorabilia. Gwen Frostic lived to 95, passing in 2001, but her gallery and shop remain, a living tribute to a strong-willed, determined woman who was as artful as she was business savvy. but don’t skip the opportunity to visit and experience this magical place. At one time, Ellie Harold, was a nurse. Later she became an ordained minister, but at age 52, she gave in to a persistent inner voice that implored her to “do art.” The result of following that voice is seen today in Ellie Harold Fine Art studio and gallery in a leafy Frankfort neighborhood. Ellie is largely self-taught, and her paintings express a sense of exploration, a willingness to cross traditional boundaries and experiment with multiple styles … impressionistic landscapes of farms, twisting two-lanes, and Sleeping Bear shore ... along with abstract imagery from Ellie’s mind’s eye … and with playful collections of delightful birds. Her studio is open year round. Stop by during regular hours or call to arrange a visit. Fine art quilter Ann Loveless won the people’s vote in the world’s biggest public art contest, ArtPrize, in 2013. Then, in 2015, she teamed with her husband, Steve, and won ArtPrize again. Her double win is unprecedented, and word of the accomplishment quickly spread. “The exposure that provides is absolutely remarkable,” Steve says. The gallery, State of the Art Framing & Gallery, has become a destination for people from all over the state and Midwest. The couple works together so well because their art forms complement one another. Steve is a landscape and commercial photographer; he shoots images that Ann then transfers to textile and quilts with her fine art technique. Gallery visitors can stop by to see examples of Ann’s distinctive quilting style and peruse Steve’s evocative landscape photography. The pair also do commission work. And if you need a piece framed, that’s possible there too, courtesy of respected framer and gallery owner Patty Wolfe. YOUR PARTNER IN TOURISM The Benzie County Area Convention & Visitors Bureau’s (CVB) mission is to promote Benzie County as a tourism destination utilizing the funds collected through State of Michigan Legislation (PA59), which allows for up to a 5% (currently 2% in Benzie County) assessment to be collected from overnight visitors staying in one of the CVB’s 21 lodging property members. Each year the CVB’s Board of Directors and staff create a marketing plan for the implementation of these funds to promote our area. The CVB works with their lodging property members, local businesses and organizations to attract visitors year round. The marketing programs of the CVB consist of regional partnerships, magazine advertising, brochures, public relations, travel and trade shows, and financial sponsorship of local events. In addition, radio, television, electronic advertising, social media and information services are also avenues for their marketing. The CVB services all areas related to tourism, including leisure, business, events and group travel. What does this mean to our local economy? Well over $20 million annually, according to conservative estimates based only on visitors that spend the night in a CVB-member lodging property. If you consider visitors who also stay with family and friends, camp, and stay at other lodging properties in the County or nearby communities, or just visit for the day, that impact is easily four or more times that amount. The CVB’s four-season marketing plan for 2018 consists of advertising in 25 printed publications, 12 electronic advertising venues, three printed brochures, 11 travel and trade shows and regional partnerships. The CVB

also retains a public relations firm, which has resulted in numerous articles being written about Benzie County in state, regional and national magazines, newspapers and online publications. In 2017 there were over 300,000 impressions published, with an estimated value of over $1 million! During 2018 the CVB will also be launching a new website, blog, e-newsletter, investing in new video, photography and more engagement with social media, all part of a yearlong investment in the rebranding of the organization and how the area is marketed. Television advertising with commercials developed for all four seasons, utilizing the Northern Michigan Preserved® call to action, air in southeast and southwest Michigan and in suburbs of Chicago; to view these commercials visit www. northernmichiganpreserved.com. The CVB also gives back to the community by helping to financially sponsor over a dozen local events that bring visitors to our area. For 2018 that investment will exceed $10,000.
