When you’re a little kid, you don’t know how the simple act of building sand castles on the beach can have such a dramatic impact on your life. As I sit here gazing at what remains of this summer sunset over the lake, I can smell what must be the first night’s bonfire rising, and nostalgia nearly overwhelms me. Our family came “up north” in the summer like so many other families. For some of us kids, the water, the waves and the sand left impressions deeply ingrained in our consciousness. Over time, those feelings grew seductive enough to draw us back. I have never seen myself as the overly nostalgic type. But as I close my eyes while sitting here on the porch, it all comes racing back to me as an unforeseen gift. All the sights, sounds, and smells of those family vacations long ago swim through the warmth of a magnificent sunset.

People Who Play Outside

PHOENIX PHOTOGRAPHY

A large part of my childhood was spent in a state below the Mason-Dixon line where, I learned soon after I moved there when I was 8, summers meant spending most of your time in air-conditioned buildings cowering from heavy humid air, smog alerts and swarms of bloodthirsty mosquitoes. My first summer there was traumatic. Every other summer of my short-but-sweet life up to that point had been spent in Northern Michigan at my grandparents’ house in Glen Arbor. Humidity? None to speak of. Heat? Just the right amount. Smog alerts? Right. Bloodthirsty mosquitoes? Occasionally, but their bite was never bad enough to keep me off the beach. So, summers were meant for playing outside. In my job as editor of this publication, it is always comforting for me to see how completely the families who live and build second homes here embrace outdoor play. This point is made, beautifully, in this month’s Outdoor Living issue. You’ll meet a family who so missed the pine trees that were lost (along with their cottage) in a fire that they installed a wall mural in memory of them in their new home; you’ll learn about another family that packs up the kids and groceries every single Friday from Memorial Day to Labor Day to water ski, gather around the campfire and even cook and eat outside at their Walloon Lake cottage—located just five miles from their home. Finally, we’ll introduce you to the Smiths, a couple who can’t wait to pull their luxury RV up at Hearthside Grove Motorcoach Resort in Petoskey so they can pull out the pots and pans and light the grill in their luxurious outdoor kitchen. Call this issue the kickoff to another memory-filled Northern Michigan summer. Don’t blame us if it has you braking for landscape and outdoor living stores!

George and Bev Biltz's airy, contemporary cottage on Walloon Lake is a happy place often filled with family and friends and always filled with color. The deep blues and greens of Walloon Lake flood the view out of floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows, and the living room is decorated in beachy shades of blue, green and yellow. Outside, vibrant flowerbeds make their declarations of welcome. It is hard to believe that not long ago this was a charred site, containing only the feet-deep ash remnants and stone chimney of the Biltzes’ former cottage— a 1960s ranch that the family had built memories around for over a decade. Every chance they had, the couple and their four daughters had traveled to the cottage from their home in Midland. And suddenly a fire and a devastation that included heirlooms, mementos from their travels, George’s father’s vintage fishing gear, and a most-cherished guestbook that documented their many houseguests (some from as far away as Europe and China), as well as many fun times they’d enjoyed at the lake were lost. Gone, too, were more than 80 lovely trees that had surrounded the home. After the fire, the couple worked hard to find the silver lining. “We had always wanted to redo the house, so we figured this was our chance,” Bev says. Their goal became building a new home in keeping with the classic cottage architecture that rings Walloon Lake, while incorporating contemporary elements and being roomy enough for family and guests. To make their vision a reality, the Biltzes assembled a team composed of some 4 Northern Home & Cottage APRIL 16

of Northern Michigan’s strongest buildand-design talents: architect Nick White, builder Richard Collie, interior designer Jana Phillips, kitchen designer Liz Firebaugh and landscaper Richard Hoffman. White’s design takes full advantage of the Walloon Lake view while embodying classic cottage details including mullioned windows, arched doorways, glossy white molding, cottage-board paneling and an open stairway that rises grandly from the foyer. In the kitchen, Firebaugh took White’s architectural cues and added touches like white beadboard, mullioned glass cabinetry and an arched hood that echoes the arched doorways and the arch in a clerestory window above the hood. The granite countertops, a pattern called Blue Lagoon, pick up the colors of Walloon Lake. Phillips took it from there, working closely with Bev to come up with a palette that celebrates the colors of water and flowers, played out in wall color, bathroom tiles, area rugs and more: soft green walls for the kitchen, aqua in the laundry room, lilac, teal and powder blue for several of the bedrooms. 4

“THE FIRST TIME I MET THE HOMEOWNERS ONSITE I REALIZED HOW DEVASTATING AND EMOTIONAL IT WAS FOR THEM TO NOT ONLY LOSE THEIR HOME BUT TO LOSE SO MANY HERITAGE TREES AROUND THEIR HOME,” SAYS LANDSCAPER RICHARD HOFFMAN. I DECIDED THEN AND THERE THAT WE WOULD BRING THAT FEELING OF TREES AND PLANTS BACK INTO THEIR LIVES.”

Given the burned-over site, landscaping was the next priority. “We lost over 80 trees in the fire so, like the house, it was pretty much a clean slate,” Bev says. “We basically just turned it over to Richard.” Hoffman’s first task was stabilizing the bank that leads to the lake. A big part of that was using huge landscape rocks to anchor what would simultaneously create visual interest and function as tables and as benches. “We told him we like unusual stones … some are from Michigan, including one from the Upper Peninsula that has copper veining,” Bev says. The couple jokes that one especially large, flat boulder looks like a “sacrificial altar”—though in reality its proximity to the fire pit makes it perfect for staging s’mores. PHOTO RICHARD HOFFMAN

Starting from scratch on the landscape had its benefits, Hoffman says. “A completely open lot gave us an opportunity to help them build the outdoor living space to suit their desires and needs,” he says. Part of that included re-creating as much of the feel of their old cottage as they could. “We built seating where there had been seating 4 Northern Home & Cottage APRIL 16

In Memory of Trees The lower, walkout level of the Biltz home pays homage to the many trees lost in the fire that also destroyed the original cottage. The couple incorporated the lumber salvaged from the maple and beech trees lost in the fire into the room’s wainscoting, a game table, a coffee table and a bathroom vanity and mirror. The backsplash in the bar area is a Motawi-tile mural of trees, water and hills—a fitting tribute to the lost trees as well as to the family’s love of the beauty of Walloon Lake. The tiles, called collectively Pine Landscape, are a signature Motawi series that was inspired by a famous early 20th-century Craftsmanera tile design by Addison LeBoutillier, called Pines, for the company Grueby Faience. The Motawi tiles are formed by clay pressed into a mold and then each is painstakingly hand-glazed. For more on Motawi tiles: motawi.com.

before and the outdoor fireplace where it had originally been to help bring back some of the memories.” There are new touches, as well, including a waterfall feature that begins as a stream on the side of the house, and then cascades past the hot tub on down the sloped bank and into the lake. Hoffman went on to fill in between the hardscapes with lush plantings, including heirloom hostas and ferns that were transplanted from Bev’s mother’s home in upstate New York, as well as the fast-growing, fascinating dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), a tree that has fossil ancestors in the Northern United States that date to the dinosaur era. The tree was thought to be

extinct until one was found growing in China in 1944. In a fitting tribute to the rebirth of this home and grounds, Hoffman considers the plantings on the Biltzes’ property to be a legacy; living artifacts that will be around for great-grandchildren to enjoy. Cheryl Robinson’s Tips for Setting an Outdoor Table You won’t find a plastic tablecloth covering the teak dining table on the Robinson’s patio—but you will find fern fronds and ivy and hosta leaves strewn around and under the dishes. That is in keeping with Cheryl Robinson’s philosophy of keeping outdoor table settings natural and using natural materials that awaken the five senses, add texture and color and bring the wonder and beauty of Northern Michigan right to the table. Other ways to achieve a natural table setting?

• Use materials you find in the landscape—leaves, flowers, stones, bark … • Include flower bouquets at the table, preferably from flowers found in the landscape. • Add touches of the natural elements you have on the table to the serving trays and serving area to create continuity. • Use dishware made from natural materials. Cheryl especially loves the cherry and walnut bowls her son Cameron made in high school shop class.

Campfire Moon Pies The Robinsons’ fire pit sees plenty of duty as s’more central, so Cheryl Robinson keeps the cottage larder stocked with the main ingredients plus add-ons like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. The family also mixes up the fire pit menu with the fixings for campfire moon pies, toasted over the flames in a cast iron pie iron, available in many outdoor catalogs and stores. HERE’S THE RECIPE: Spread two slices of white bread with soft butter on one side. Spread one slice with cream cheese and top with fruit pie filling and pieces of chocolate. Sandwich-up the slices and grill until toasty in the pie iron. When finished drizzle with homemade confectioner’s sugar icing: 1 cup confectioner’s sugar K teaspoon vanilla K teaspoon milk Mix together the milk and vanilla. Stir in the sugar a little bit at a time. Makes enough for a weekend’s worth of Campfire Moon Pies!

out the kitchen area. “It’s buffet style,” Charles explains. “The grill is first—we don’t even set out platters because people take their food right off the grill.” Logically, the beverage cooler is at the end of the counter. The lighting is another classic Robinson touch: The family trekked into a nearby swamp and gathered several bent trees and brought them to the site where Charles mounted them and attached rustic pendant lights that dangle in the lake breezes. There are several more levels on the way down to the lake—one for a circular picnic table and another for a child’s swing shaped like an airplane. When visitors finally reach the dock for sailing or water-skiing, they’re already plotting out where they’ll relax after boating. The layout of the whole lot harkens back to the classic style of summer lake living, when the cottage was tiny and everyone wanted to be outside. With the waves lapping and the canopy alive with birdsong, the Robinsons know this is the way it was meant to be on Walloon.
