Beaches is a bit of a secret, tucked away in a pretty 30-acre preserve near Harbor Springs. It’s just 300 feet of frontage, but on most days you’re likely to have it all to yourself. A great spot for young families, there’s 1.5 miles of easy hiking trails and boardwalks through dunes and cedar swamps, and an interpretive nature center for kids. Zorn Park: A great little slice of sand sidled up to a natural harbor
on Little Traverse Bay, just steps from downtown Harbor Springs. The beach has lifeguards, a swimming raft and a sandy-bottomed swim area; the spring-fed waters are clean, clear and exhilaratingly cold. A grassy knoll and shade trees provide a spot to roll out the picnic blanket and enjoy a take-out lunch from Harbor Springs’ many great eateries. 231.526.7999, HARBORSPRINGSCHAMBER.COM.

Petoskey State Park: This expansive beach on Little Traverse
Bay, smack between Harbor Springs and Petoskey, is a local favorite. Sand volleyball courts, campsites, hiking trails and lots more; be sure to climb the stairs to Old Baldy, a stable dune just behind the beach, for a fabulous view of the bay. Crooked Lake: This meandering lake northeast of Petoskey is part of the Inland Waterway—an interconnected chain
of rivers and lakes stretching all the way from Petoskey to Cheboygan. On the lake’s western edge is the community of Conway, where Township Park has a petite beach, a bubbling artesian well and a picnic-perfect grassy park. On Merritt Street/US31 in Conway.
Peninsula Beach: A short walk from downtown Boyne City,
this public beach on Lake Charlevoix is primo for picnicking or just parking a lawn chair to spend the afternoon with a good read. Thorne Swift Nature Preserve: This Lake Michigan beach
One of our all-time favorite destination beaches is this remote, seven-mile-long shoreline that borders Wilderness State Park. Low dunes, tall grass, scrubby pines, and a beach that you can walk for miles and miles. Park your beach blanket closer to Cross Village for the most pristine sand, or head farther east where the shoreline becomes pocked with stones for great rock picking. Bear River Whitewater Park: Bear River Valley Recreation Area’s recent $2.4 million facelift included returning a spectacular stretch of the Bear River to its natural, wild state. Dams were removed, industrial areas were cleaned, and the result is one of Lower Michigan’s few true whitewater experiences, with challenging drops and rapids to thrill experienced paddlers. (Beginners can put in at the Mitchell Street launch.) You won’t have to travel far to find it; the park is just steps from downtown Petoskey. Little Traverse Bay is a 45-squaremile heaven for kayakers, with plenty of protected shoreline begging to be explored. Our suggestion: Launch in the early morning and paddle from downtown Harbor Springs all the way to the historic lighthouse at the end of Harbor Point peninsula (you’ll make it back in time for brunch). Or, try your hand at paddleboarding, the region’s favorite new watersport. Rentals, lessons and guided tours available through The Outfitter in Harbor Springs. 153 E. Shepler’s Great Lakes Cruises: The company whose name you might recognize from the Mackinac Island ferry docks also offers cruises around the Straits. Maritime history buffs will love the lighthouse cruises, which head into Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Les Cheneaux Islands to offer rare views of historic, often-inaccessible lighthouses. This year, Shepler’s is also offering five “night sky” cruises; we bet the Perseid meteor shower cruises on August 11 and 12 will be unforgettable (reserve your spot early online). 556 E. WILDERNESS STATE PARK The Lower Peninsula’s largest piece of contiguous undeveloped land encompasses 10,000 magnificent acres of forest, wetlands, meadows, dunes and 26 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. And it’s all yours to explore. Hit the miles of trails, which include a five-mile section of the epic North Country Trail, by foot or mountain bike; rock-hunt, picnic or take a dip along the gorgeous hike-in beaches on Sturgeon Bay; or pack a field guidebook and take a photo safari of the abundant wildlife, keeping eyes peeled for rare Great Lakes native species like Pitcher’s thistle and Houghton’s goldenrod. Overnighters can stay in one of the park’s rustic but cozy cabins, some of which are on the water, some in the woods. The Great Outdoors Pedal Little Traverse Wheelway:
This turn-of-the-century former railway, stretching more than 26 miles along the bay between Charlevoix and Harbor Springs, now serves as one of the region’s most scenic nonmotorized trails—a haven for recreational riders. The wide, paved pathway makes it especially friendly for families with small children. The “East Segment” in Petoskey is a lovely section; start at the Little Traverse History Museum, and continue along Bayfront Park (a perfect picnic spot)

Mountain Bike the Trails of Boyne: Hop the chairlift for a ride to the top of Boyne Mountain, where you’ll find a range of trails suited to all levels of riders. Headlands International Dark Sky Park: There’s no camping at this Mackinaw City property, but visitors are encouraged to bring sleeping bags, chairs and blankets and stay out into the wee hours of the morning for incredible stargazing. Perched high atop a limestone bluff on the island’s southern side, the 1780-built Fort Mackinac was a strategic outpost for British and U.S. armies for more than 115 years. These days, the parade grounds and historic structures—including the oldest building in the entire state—have been preserved as interactive exhibits, with costumed interpreters leading demonstrations to show what life was like within the fort for the soldiers and their families who called this place home. Reenactments include cannon salutes, rifle firing, historic medical treatment demonstrations, children’s games and even Victorian-era baseball. Colonial Michilimackinac: Cannon smoke, musket firing and gazing out at the Straits over the palisade walls are hallmarks of every visit to this colonial fort and fur-trading village. From 1715 to the early 1780s, this fortified encampment served as the western Great Lakes’ fur trading epicenter; these days, the Mackinaw City landmark is on the National Register of Historic Places, serving as an open-air, live-action museum and active archaeological site (more than a million artifacts have been unearthed here since excavation began in 1959).
