Applying for U.S. Citizenship in Orlando In February 2016, President Obama announced a new initiative called, “Task Force on New Americans,� with the goal of encouraging qualified permanent residents (green card holders) to become U.S. Citizens. There are many advantages to becoming a U.S. Citizen, such as voting in a federal election, serving as a juror, unlimited travel outside the U.S., qualifying for federal jobs, qualifying for certain federal public benefits and priority in filing immigration petitions for family members. The steps for becoming a U.S. Citizen are as follows: (1) prepare and submit Form N-400; (2) appear for biometrics (or fingerprint) appointment; (3) appear for interview; and if approved, (4) appear for oath ceremony.

Eligibility for U.S. Citizenship in Orlando: 1. Submit Form N-400 with required supporting documents and filing fee.

2. Residency: The applicant or permanent resident must prove residency in his/her state for the last six (6) months and continuous residency in the United States for five (5) years – three (3) years if married and living with a U.S. citizen spouse. Trips outside the U.S. for more than six (6) months will break continuous residency and may make you ineligible for U.S. Citizenship.

3. English: The applicant or permanent resident must demonstrate he or she can read a sentence in English and write a sentence in English. If you are over age 50 and been a permanent resident (green card holder) for over 20 years or if you are over age 55 and been a permanent resident (green card holder) for over 15 years then you are exempt from the English requirement and do not have to demonstrate you can read and write in English.

4. U.S. History: The applicant or permanent resident must demonstrate he or she knows fundamentals of U.S. History. If you have certain disabilities then you are exempt from this requirement.

5. Good Moral Character: The applicant or permanent resident must demonstrate the he or she possess good moral character for the required statutory period (five years prior to applying).

Usually, an applicant would be found to lack good moral character and would be denied if they owe tax, owe child support, have a prior arrest, lied to an immigration officer, failure to register for selective service, dishonorable discharge from U.S. Armed Forces, vote or register to vote, etc.
