R

egular readers of my letter will know that shopping with my four-year-old is not an exercise I take lightly. Bookshops and women’s clothing stores are off the list. A visit to the newsagent works only if I am prepared to fork out decent cash on a magazine for him – he can’t yet read but that doesn’t stop him picking up every issue in the store and carefully examining the merits of the cheap plastic trinket that comes with each. A trip to the supermarket is tolerable if I promise him a Wiggles-endorsed snack from the baby aisle or Ben 10 spaghetti that he doesn’t eat anyway. But for some reason, a trip to a farmers’ market (touch wood) is an enjoyable experience for us both. While the staff at Myer are familiar with my child’s antics and there are plenty of store owners from the Plaza to Cotton Tree and down in Caloundra who have seen him chuck a

wobbly, the market stallholders are charmed by my son’s winning smile and patiently answer his barrage of questions. The younger Pearson helps me select appropriate vegies and happily samples the pineapple, and if things start to look shaky I can bribe him with a go on the jumping castle at Kawana or a cheap toy from the secondhand stall at Currimundi. But the good news is there are many other benefits to a farmers’ market, which Leigh Robshaw explores this week on page 8. One benefit is that fresh, local produce is often cheaper than the stuff sold in shops, and if you’re money conscious, you’ll love reading the writing of MWP’s newest contributor Noel Whittaker. MARKET PREVIEW If you can’t grow your own, the next best thing is buying it from a farmers’ market, where the vibe is friendly, the food is fresh and the prices are fair for shoppers and suppliers. WORDS Leigh Robshaw

revolution is sweeping Australia, and it constitutes a fundamental change in the way we think about, and buy, our food. We are becoming more concerned about how our food is produced and as a result, farmers’ markets are shooting up like spring flowers to cater to an increasing demand for high-quality local produce. It seems like the rise of farmers’ markets has coincided with the rampant cooking show craze, with countless celebrity chefs reminding us the best flavours and nutritional content are found in the freshest produce. But interest in farmers’ markets has been growing steadily for more than 10 years – since the first modernday farmers’ market began trading in Victoria in 1999,

according to the national representative of the Australian Farmers’ Market Association, Jane Adams. “Australians are very concerned about the provenance of their food,” says Adams. “We respect our farmers and we want to support them. Also, it actually feels good to go to a farmers’ market; you’re shopping in the fresh air and meeting people in a casual way. It’s a much more convivial and educational way of shopping for your food.” A recent report released by Australia’s Minister for Agriculture, Joe Ludwig, showed farmers’ markets have become a vital and permanent link in Australia’s food chain. The report, Social and Economic Dimensions of Farmers Markets in Australia, is based on a 2011 survey of 72 market managers. It found 97 per cent of market M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

managers reported long-term sustainability of their markets, with market numbers more than doubling between 2004 and 2011. A survey of 600 South-East Queensland residents and tourists undertaken by Dr Dawn Birch, from the University of the Sunshine Coast on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, found that shoppers are looking for products that are “authentic and original, traditional to the region, and a satisfying and fun shopping experience”. Regular market-goer Faye Larkan of Maleny, says she shops at farmers’ markets for the quality and variety of organic produce available, as well as the overall experience. “Walking around a farmers’ market on a nice sunny day is just wonderful,” says Larkan, who regularly shops at the Blackall Range Growers’ Market and Kawana Farmers’ Market. “I love the atmosphere – it’s very social. They’re also really good venues for quirky little cottage industries, special things you know you won’t get anywhere else. I remember distinctly meeting a lady at Kawana Farmers’ Markets one day, who made glutenfree cakes and fermented vinegars. Everything she made was so inspiring, and she used really interesting herbs and ingredients.” While community engagement is one of the main attractions, it’s quality and price that most people are seeking. Savvy market shoppers know produce bought direct from the grower lasts longer and the price is the same, if not cheaper, than buying from a supermarket. The added bonus is you can chat to the farmer about how the produce was grown, and there’s a feel-good factor in knowing your money is going straight into the pocket of the person who toiled over your apples or spinach. Farmers’ markets also encourage environmental sustainability, because the produce sold there has substantially fewer ‘food miles’ than that sold at large supermarkets. The Sunshine Coast has more than a dozen farmers’ markets, with new ones springing up regularly. One of the most popular is Noosa Farmers’ Market, launched by Shane Stanley with his partner Lisa in 2002. “Noosa Farmers’ Market has been extremely successful because Shane has stuck to his values of bringing the farmer to the market,” says Carem Faba, who assists Shane in running the market. “If you go back six months, after the flooding and cyclones, bananas were $12 a kilo at [the supermarket]. We had a grower down the road who wasn’t affected, selling them for $4 a kilo. We made a loud statement at the time: we can provide fresh produce for the local community at a good price.” Faba says Noosa Farmers’ Market encourages sellers who grow local or organic produce, as well as people who craft quality products that are particularly unique, like one stallholder who makes 50 different flavours of fairy floss, including coffee and pomegranate. more than 160 farmers’ markets operating around Australia. A pivotal point in the movement came when The Bulletin ran a cover story called The Real Food Revolution in

2002. The first Australian farmers’ market conference was in

2003. Victoria is the only state or territory to have it’s own farmers’ market association. The Victorian Government has given a total of

$4 million over two governments to farmers’ markets to ensure their sustainability. Eumundi Markets turns over an estimated

$120 million a year and attracts around 20,000 visitors on a good day.

Market Association’s definition, a farmers’ market should allow only “farmers and food producers to sell farm-origin and associated value-added processed food products directly to customers”. However, there are reports of ‘resellers’ at some markets around the Coast trying to pass off fruit and vegetables purchased at Rocklea Markets as their own. Adams says, “It’s up to the market manager to set the rules and self-manage the degree of authenticity within the market.” Julie Shelton, founder of the Real Food Festival, held in Maleny in September, believes reselling isn’t a problem in itself, as long as there is total transparency and shoppers aren’t being duped. “Customers who shop at farmers’ markets are coming with different needs and expectations,” says Shelton. “For some it’s very price-driven, and for others it’s about qualities such as organic or local. I think the main issue is in clear labelling, so that people can then have the choice with what they’re buying, rather than there being a risk of deception, which is what’s happening at the moment.” Peter Homan, manager of Eumundi Markets, has introduced a rating system for stallholders to ascertain how closely they’re aligned with the market’s vision to have “the best art and craft and food market in Australia”. Eumundi Markets has been running for 33 years, and Homan says resellers are rare – about one in 100 – and those who slip through the cracks are quickly outed by the bona fide producers. He suggests shoppers question stallholders about how their products are grown or made if they’re unsure of their authenticity. While there are some definite drawbacks of shopping at farmers’ markets, such as bad weather or uneven ground, most shoppers believe they’re far outweighed by the benefits. “A grower can tell you whether they’ve used pesticides or fertilisers, they can tell you how to cook the food properly, all those things you don’t get from the checkout person at your local supermarket,” says Homan. “You also get freshness and a good price – the two things people are looking for.” The other drawback of farmers’ markets is that they’re usually held only on weekends, but Shelton and other ‘real food’ advocates hope to see farmers’ markets becoming a part of everyday life in the near future. “In Australia, we’re locked into this concept that farmers markets’ need to be on a Saturday or Sunday,” says Shelton. “In Europe that’s not the case. If you’ve got a farmers market happening in your town square on a Thursday, it makes it more accessible for restaurants, cafes and accommodation houses wanting to stock up before the busy weekend period.” With 69 per cent of markets reporting increased stallholder numbers and 64 per cent reporting increased shopper numbers, Australia may follow Europe’s lead sooner than we think.

I

am forever at business functions such as lunches and dinners or my worst nightmare, cocktail functions. And the reason why cocktail functions are my worst nightmare is not because I don’t drink, it’s because I cannot believe the rudeness of some people. You know how people stand around in tight circles at these things? Well, when I am in one of those circles and I see someone wandering aimlessly around I signal for them to join us. How can people not see the need to include people in that situation? Or how about when you are at a business

lunch and you are on the end of a long table and the person next to you decides that you are unworthy or uninteresting and talks to the person on the other side for the entire meal? You sit there feeling like a shag on a rock. Or does this just happen to me? How about on planes where someone hogs the armrest or in the cinema where a couple discuss the movie at full volume while rustling through a bag of chips? Do you ever send a birthday present to a relative’s child and there is not acknowledgement that the gift arrived much less a ‘thank you’ phone call? How about at the supermarket where you have a full trolley and the person behind has a few things and you wave them through? Why doesn’t this ever happen in reverse? Same thing on the roads. I’m always waving people through. And then in a busy carpark where you sit with blinker on signalling that you intend taking someone’s park when they

leave. And then they dawdle and dawdle and then decide that they’re not leaving without signalling this fact to you? Have you ever walked away from a function or meeting or put the phone down after having just been exposed to rudeness and selfishness and thought, ‘Am I the only normal person in the world?’ Yes? You have? Well then you will be pleased to know that I have set up a Society for Normal People where people with manners and consideration for others can live in peace and tranquillity. We normal people use words like ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and we let others into queues and we ring and thank people for gifts. And do you know why we do all of this? It’s because we are normal! olice say they will not offer a reward to solve the killing of Victorian toddler Jaidyn Leskie, on the back of the 15th anniversary of his death. “A reward is not proposed as the investigation is not active,” police said in a statement. It was 15 years ago last Friday since babysitter Greg Domaszewicz says he left the 14-month-old boy sleeping before going to pick up Jaidyn’s mother Bilynda Williams, his girlfriend at the time, from a pub in nearby Traralgon. When he returned, the child had gone, his windows were smashed and a bloodied pig’s head was lying on the front lawn. Jaidyn’s body was discovered at the nearby Blue Rock Dam on New Year’s Day 1998. Domaszewicz was charged with his murder but acquitted by a Supreme Court jury. Three subsequent inquests into Jaidyn’s death have been held. The first, in June 2002, laid no

blame for his death. The second inquest, in December 2004, was halted when Domaszewicz’s legal team won an argument that the Victorian coroner was acting outside his powers. A third inquest began in July 2005 and found Domaszewicz had contributed to Jaidyn’s death because he failed to adequately look after the toddler while he was in his care, and also that he dumped the little boy’s body in the dam, but coroner Graeme Johnstone did not say Domaszewicz killed the boy. Public housing crackdown The Queensland Government is cracking down on rent dodgers living in public housing. The move is part of a plan to tackle what Housing Minister Bruce Flegg has called a social housing crisis in the state. Flegg says there are currently 30,000 applicants waiting for public housing. The government is determined to identify tenants dodging the requirement to hand over 25 per cent of their income as rent, he says. Tenants will have until July 27 to notify the Department of Housing of any undeclared household members. If they don’t, tenants found to be harbouring freeloaders may be required to back pay rent, at a rate of 25 per cent of their household income. AAP

Music icon Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum says he’s raring to get back to work but is determined to use his experience to help others at risk of head injuries, particularly footballers. Talking on Melbourne radio station 3AW, Meldrum told hosts Nick McCallum and Justin Smith he’s been grateful for the overwhelming response he’s received from Australians of all ages. He says it’s been an education having such a long recovery time. “Not being known as a patient person I wanted to go back to work straight away,” Meldrum told listeners. He is also surprised at how many people have warned him to be more careful following the accident. “I live in Richmond [in Melbourne] and I go to the Richmond Plaza and people stop me and ask how I am. “After they’ve asked me how I am, they get this stern look on their faces and even wag their fingers at

CareFlight targeted by phone hackers Rescue helicopter service CareFlight Group has been attacked by phone hackers who ran up a $16,000 phone bill over the recent long weekend. The hackers gained access to CareFlight’s telephone account through the organisation’s voicemail system and made international phone calls totalling $16,000 over a 72-hour period. “This is the last thing you need as a community service that relies on donations for almost half of its funding,” says CareFlight chief executive Ashley van de Velde. “These callous criminals have affected the entire community we serve by creating such a cruel expense for our charity.” The group’s helicopter service, RACQ CareFlight, goes to the aid of more than 450 people every year with each mission costing in excess of $12,000. Victorian patients dying of thirst, hunger People are dying in Victorian hospitals from hunger and thirst at a rate of three deaths a week, a report has revealed. In 2011, 83 patients died directly of dehydration and 48 died directly of malnutrition, The Herald Sun reports. Hunger and thirst played a role in a further 27 deaths last year, according to figures obtained under Freedom of Information. Over the past seven years, there have been at least at least 722 deaths in Victorian hospitals in which hunger and thirst have been at least partly to blame, the newspaper says. The figures don’t include patients who were dehydrated or malnourished but died of another cause. AAP

‘XENA’ FIGHTS OIL BATTLE

ctress Lucy Lawless has no regrets about a protest aboard an oil exploration ship, which led to admitting a charge in court on Thursday. Lawless and seven other Greenpeace activists admitted a charge in Auckland District Court of being unlawfully on a ship after they spent 77 hours on a 53 metre-high tower they scaled aboard the Noble Discoverer at Port Taranaki in February. The action was aimed at protesting Shell’s planned exploration for oil in the Arctic. Convictions were not formally entered at the request of lawyer Ron Mansfield so they can keep all options open for sentencing, which could include a discharge without conviction. Lawless, best-known for her roles in Xena: Warrior Princess and Spartacus, says the protest had prompted 475,000 people to lend their names to the campaign to stop the drilling. AAP

COST OF A BIG NIGHT OUT London is the most expensive city for an evening out, a cost comparison of the world’s major cities shows. The capital tops the list in a cost comparison of an evening out for two in key tourist cities around the world. Hanoi, in Vietnam, offers the most affordable night out for British travellers, with a total cost of £89.93 ($141.57). At more than triple the cost of Hanoi, London topped the list as most expensive with a cost of £330.45 ($520.19).

The TripAdvisor TripIndex is tracked against the British pound and is based on a night out for two people in a four-star hotel, cocktails, a two-course dinner with a bottle of wine, and taxi fares. “TripIndex helps travellers to see where their pound goes the furthest,” TripAdvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw says. “The list shows that many Asian cities, along with some European cities – like Warsaw and Sofia – are very affordable once you’re on the ground.” PA

PC maker Dell to pay dividends Struggling computer company Dell has announced it will use some of its cash stockpile to pay shareholder dividends as it pursues a shift to services. Chairman and chief executive Michael Dell has told CNBC television that in view of the PC maker’s cash position and a shift to a more diversified business model, “we feel confident this is a great time to return this capital to shareholders now in perpetuity”. The company will pay 32 US cents per share annually, amounting to an annual expense of $US560 million ($570 million), from a cash stockpile of $US17.2 billion ($17.5 billion). AFP

UK reopens Google Street View inquiries Britain’s data regulator has reopened its investigation into Google’s Street View, saying an inquiry by authorities in the US has raised new doubts about the disputed program. Steve Eckersley, enforcement chief of the British Information Commissioner’s Office, says Google has questions to answer about Street View, an attention-grabbing project that sent camera-toting vehicles across the globe to create three-dimensional maps of the world’s roads. But the cars weren’t just taking pictures; they were scooping up passwords, web addresses, emails and other sensitive data. There was outrage when the data-slurping was exposed in early 2010, with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) one of several European agencies that investigated Street View. However, in an April 13 report, the Federal Communications Commission found that Google’s data collection was the deliberate work of a Google engineer and that his Street View colleagues had been briefed on his activities. BRIDGE WORK CONTINUES

ork is progressing on the $4.5 million Tucker’s Creek Bridge duplication project, with 47 bridge piles expected to be in place by mid-July. A council spokeswoman says motorists will continue to experience delays on Mooloolaba’s

Brisbane Road while work is underway. “Pitching of the piles from horizontal to vertical will occur Monday to Saturday between 5am and 8am,” she says. “Motorists and pedestrians can expect delays on Brisbane Road of up to 15 minutes at a time. “To avoid delays, light vehicles are encouraged to take the alternative route via Venning Street, Goonawarra Drive and Amarina Avenue.” Pile driving occurs between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday. The new bridge will provide an additional two lanes to the southern gateway to Mooloolaba, along with improved pedestrian, bicycle and bus lanes. The council says it is working with local businesses to minimise disruption.

Police investigate Big Pineapple sabotage Police were this week investigating a possible act of sabotage at the Big Pineapple. The Woombye attraction is being restored after it went into receivership in 2009 and closed down. Its plantation train ride was due to reopen on Saturday when staff discovered carefully laid grease on the tracks. In a statement, general manager Brendan Weatherill said security would be stepped up in the wake of incident. “Public safety is always our chief concern, and as such, when we did the final safety inspection at 8.30am in readiness for the 9.30am train ride we were horrified to find grease and non-petroleumbased oil had been applied to the track at the critical point below the steepest gradient,” he said. “It has taken many months to re-commission the train so we won’t be stopped now,” Weatherill added.

BN Co boss Mike Quigley says momentum on the national broadband network is building despite the delays and setbacks in delivering on the government’s $36 billion project. NBN Co has the task of delivering fibre-optic broadband cable to 93 per cent of homes, schools and businesses across Australia by 2021, with the rest to be provided by fixed wireless and satellite services. Quigley says NBN Co is “daily gaining momentum” in its build. Changes to the assumptions in the initial corporate plan released in December 2010, due to several factors, were “not surprising”, he says. These included the assumption about when the deal would be completed with Telstra, how NBN Co would implement the competition watchdog’s decision on points-of-interconnect, how to execute the government’s policy for new housing estates which was not finalised at that time and other policy matters. He says much work had been done by the company since December 2010. “So that we are now in a position to finalise an updated corporate plan, and

He says only 18 per cent of active services on NBN Co’s fibre network was for its entry-level speed tier of 12 Mbps download/one Mbps upload. For 25/5 Mbps it was 35 per cent and 10 per cent for 50/20 Mbps. “The data for April shows this trend is even stronger, with almost 50 per cent of new active services being on the highest speed tier,” he says. A challenge for NBN Co’s planners was the

WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE COAST According to the website Sunshine Coast Broadband Today, the Sunshine Coast region has full satellite coverage and “the NBN in New Developments will be installed in many new locations over the course of 2012”. The website says fixed wireless will be rolled out across the nation by mid 2015. Locally, Connecting the Coast is a communications platform for the Maroochy Clever Networks and Noosa Clever Networks Projects. The website reports that “the project facilitated the development of enhanced telecommunications infrastructure across the Sunshine Coast region”. “The capital construction works above are all now completed and the network is operational. Connecting the Coast is supported by $4.75 million of funding from the Australian Government under the Clever Networks ISD program, and $7.5 million from regional partners the Sunshine Coast Council, the University of the Sunshine Coast, Allegro Networks and Mach Technology.” For more information on local initiatives and NBN news head to sunshinecoast.broadbandtoday.com.au.

C

ommencing a pension from a self-managed super fund may seem to be an easy exercise – just start taking payments from the fund. But in reality there are a number of steps that must be undertaken to ensure it is done legally. The first step is to check the trust deed to ensure it allows for the payment of a pension. The deed must specify when and how it is to be paid, and it may address other administrative issues as well. Next, the member must request in writing that the trustee commences paying a pension. The request must include the start date,

the amount and frequency of payments, bank account details of where it must be paid, and other terms such as whether the pension is reversionary or not. The trustees then ensure the member is eligible for a pension (ie that they have attained a condition of release) and they need to record the resolution in the minutes. The trustees must also consider whether a product disclosure statement needs to be issued. If PAYG tax is required to be withheld, the trustees must register for that and it must be done prior to the first amount being withheld. Obviously, no tax needs to be withheld if the member is over the age of 60 and receiving a pension payment. Regarding the assets of the fund, they must be valued at market value on the day of commencement of the pension. Also, the taxable

and non-taxable components must be determined and locked in at that date. The investment strategy of the fund will need to be reviewed and possibly adjusted to enable the fund to meet pension liabilities. Trustees will also have to decide whether to segregate the assets or not, and advice may need to be sought on this issue. Once these procedures have been followed, the fund can start paying a pension. It is important to ensure the minimum payments have been made each year, otherwise there can be substantial penalties. It’s not so easy if you don’t know what you’re doing and it is important to seek advice. LAST-MINUTE TAX MINIMISATION STRATEGIES

une 30 is rapidly approaching, which means it is time to seek advice about ways to save tax. Smart tax planning means deferring income while bringing forward expenses. If you have deductible expenses such as repairs and maintenance on investment properties, try to bring them forward so you will enjoy your tax deduction in the current financial year. Investigate prepaying 12 months’ interest on your investment loans. Prepaying a year’s interest on a loan of $300,000 may cost $22,000, but you could get up to $10,230 back as a tax refund. This strategy will require negotiation with your lender – you can’t just bank the equivalent of a year’s interest into the loan account, because all the lender will do is take one month’s interest and credit the rest to the principal. Salary sacrifice to superannuation is still a great strategy because such

contributions lose just 15 per cent, whereas money taken in hand will probably lose at least 31.5 per cent. Provided lack of access is not a problem for you, superannuation is the perfect place to invest an end-of-year bonus. If you are a higher income earner, or are salary sacrificing now, make it a priority to check your level of contributions as soon as possible. The maximum deductible contributions are $25,000 a year for those under 50, and $50,000 a year for people 50 and over. These include the employer compulsory nine per cent. Take advice about what to do after June 30 when the maximum deductible contribution reduces to $25,000 for everybody – you may need to rethink your current salary sacrifice arrangements. Nobody likes paying capital gains tax, but it’s important to understand that the relevant date is the date the sales contract is signed. Deferring signing a contract until after June 30 will give you an extra year’s use of the money you owe the tax man. If you are retiring, it may also mean you pay at a lower rate if you will be in a lower tax bracket. Another strategy is to sell assets that will trigger a capital loss in the same year as you

make the capital profit – the losses will reduce the CGT as they can be offset against the gains. Even if this means selling shares you believe have strong potential, there is nothing to stop you selling them prior to June 30 and then buying other shares when you are ready. If you are eligible to contribute to super but don’t have an employer making contributions for you, you could also reduce CGT by making a tax deductible contribution. CASE STUDY: A couple is retired, and in their early 60s, which makes them eligible to contribute to super and also claim a tax deduction. They sell an investment which triggers a $200,000 capital gain, which will drop to $100,000 when the 50 per cent discount is allowed for. CGT will be calculated by adding $50,000 to the taxable income of both. They could each contribute $200,000 to super and apportion it $50,000 concessional and $150,000 non-concessional. This would create a tax deduction of $50,000 each, which would wipe out the capital gain. The only tax is the 15 per cent on the $100,000 concessional contribution. June 30 this year falls on a Saturday – this is another reason to take action as soon as possible.

n-car navigation company TomTom has inked a deal to provide map information to Apple, which a day earlier introduced its own mapping service for iPhones and iPads. “TomTom has signed a global agreement with Apple for maps and related information,” the Dutch firm said on Tuesday in a statement, without elaborating. Apple recently showcased modifications to its mobile device operating software that included kicking Google Maps to the curb and replacing it with a customised mapping program. During a presentation at the start of its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple said that it is working with car makers to build Siri artificial intelligence technology into voice control systems in cars. “Through the voice command button on your steering wheel, you’ll be able to ask Siri questions

without taking your eyes off the road,” Apple said at a website page describing improvements coming with the iOS6 operating system. “With the Eyes Free feature, ask Siri to call people, select and play music, hear and compose text messages, use Maps and get directions, read your notifications, find calendar information, add reminders, and more.” Siri, which debuted with the iPhone 4S, is being extended to recent-generation iPads. Eyes Free mode enables people to interact with iPhones “using nothing more than your voice”, according to Apple. AAP

ustralian men reluctant to visit their doctor for a general health check-up should view their GP as a friend who can help them when they’re sick. Only 39 per cent of Australian men discuss healthy lifestyle issues with their GP, according to the most recent figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Speaking at the launch of men’s health week, Indigenous Health Minister Warren Snowdon encouraged males to dispense with their reluctance to visit their doctor. “Too many men don’t want to go to a doctor and they need to understand that a doctor is a friend, someone who can help them when they’re sick,” Snowdon said. “We need to highlight to

Australian males of all ages that it’s important to look after themselves and be healthy.” Mental health issues were a key focus of this year’s men’s health week, with ABS data showing nearly half (48 per cent) of Australian men have suffered some form of mental health issue. Snowdon said mental health was still a taboo subject for many men and urged younger Australians not to copy the behaviour of their older counterparts. “In the older generation, males are males – you never had a man hug. “For younger men it’s about understanding that if you have a mental illness you can talk to people. “We want to tell young males it’s good to be healthy.” AAP

APP HELPS ROMANTICALLY INDECISIVE Relationships have their ups and downs, but at what point do the downs make the relationship more trouble than it’s worth? For American Sarah Gray, the answer lay in a graph. As she grappled several years ago to determine whether there was more good or bad in her longdistance romance with her college sweetheart, the computer programmer created a web tool to track her constantly shifting feelings. Twice a day for six weeks she ranked how happy she was with her boyfriend and wrote explanatory diary entries. At the end, the graph showed she was happy just 39 per cent of the time, and spent the rest feeling neutral or unhappy. Reviewing the diary entries, she realised it wasn’t the distance but fundamental aspects of his personality that rubbed her the wrong way. To help other men and women in murky relationships see the forest through the trees, in March, Gray launched the Should I Break Up With My Boyfriend? iPhone app (shouldibreakupwithmyboyfriend. com). The app sends you a reminder at the same time every day to rate

how you’re feeling about your significant other and offers a space to say why. After two weeks it plots your results on a line graph and gives you a bit of automated advice – such as, “Should you break up with him? Signs point to yes … You’re bored. Underwhelmed. WINE WITH A VIEW IN THE MORNINGTON PENINSULA WORDS Travis Shultz

V

ictoria’s Mornington Peninsula may be a relative newcomer to the Australian wine scene, but it has quickly carved its niche as one of the country’s premier pinot noir-producing districts. It was not until the early 1970s that vignerons were attracted to the cool, but Mediterranean climate of the region and after some trial and error, found the conditions were ideally suited to producing good quality chardonnay, pinot gris (and pinot grigio) and of course, pinot noir. These days, there are well over 200 individual vineyards on the peninsular and some 61 wineries – of which more than 50 have cellar door outlets. As the majority of the vineyards are small (less than five acres in plantings), there’s a real family feel to the viticulture, even though variations in soil, elevation and micro-climate result in marked differences between the wines of different producers. Having recently returned from a ‘study tour’ (read: junket) of the greater Mornington region, I can tell you from first-hand experience how community spirited the wine makers are, and how good their wines have become. But surprisingly, the vines are only a bit part in the Mornington Peninsula production, as the

picturesque coastal scenery, world-class golf resorts, abundant galleries and celebrated restaurants all contribute to the experience. There are few better ways to while away a cool but sunny Friday afternoon than lunching at Montalto Vineyard and Olive Grove near Red Hill. It’s a serious winery and restaurant where patrons can wander, glass in hand, through its

I can tell you from first-hand experience how community spirited the winemakers are, and how good their wines have becomem ne permanent display of sculptures that are scattered throughout its vineyard and vegetable gardens, before sitting down to enjoy lunch in their rammed earth and glass restaurant. And of course, there are the wines – not just from the Montalto stable, but from across the peninsula, all carefully selected for inclusion on the wine list by co-owner John Mitchell, who together

with wife Wendy, established the iconic foodies’ destination a little over a decade ago. If travelling a bit over an hour out of Melbourne is too far for you to go this weekend, you can always bring the Mornington Peninsula to you, as all of the cellar doors will happily pack and post their wines to you, anywhere in Australia. Many of the wines, however, will also be available in your local bottle shop. The signature wine of the region is unquestionably the pinot noir, which is generally medium bodied, shows cherried flavours, balanced acidity and fine but supporting tannins. Some of the best I tried came from Ten Minutes by Tractor, Port Phillip Estate (which is an ultra-impressive winery and restaurant, if you get a chance to visit), T’gallant, Yabby Lake Vineyard and Eldridge Estate (which sells mainly through its cellar door and members mailing list). With all of its attractions, events, scenery and galleries, the Mornington Peninsula is not just for wine buffs and bons vivants – it’s a worthy destination for your next weekend getaway. AUGELLO’S WINS FIRST PRIZE FOR SUSHI INSPIRED PIZZA It’s official: Augello’s in Mooloolaba makes the best pizza. Defending his title against 300 entries at the Fonterra Foodservice Global Pizza Challenge final held in Sydney last month, Augello’s owner Simon Best produced the best pizza in the world. The ingredients of the sushi-inspired feast were mozzarella, avocado, mango salsa (made from mango, strawberry, chilli, red onion and coriander), pickled ginger and Mooloolaba yellow fin tuna, seared with black sesame seeds and topped with wasabi aioli. All of this was layered on a pizza base infused with black and white sesame seeds and blended nori roll. “I wanted to create a pizza with an explosion of flavours,� says Best. “I want it to feel like there is a party in your mouth with every bite. Clearly the judges enjoyed the celebration.� Best adds that the restaurant prides itself on using fresh local produce where it can. “We are lucky to be able to access the freshest ingredients here on the Sunshine Coast, but we needed a real point of interest to win over the judges and regain the title we won in 2010. “I was inspired by the Japanese-infused food

during my many visits to Vancouver in Canada and this got my creative juices flowing to create something that had unique ingredients but was still an amazing taste sensation,� Best adds. The competition attracts pizza makers from as far as the US, Italy, South Africa and Australia.

Sure, beer is man’s worst enemy, but then again the Bible says to love your enemy, and there’s nothing more powerful than divine intervention when it comes to a brew. Therefore, it’s with great pleasure that I introduce you to a gift from the beer gods – Holgate Mt Macedon Ale. This is one seriously ace-tasting beverage from a little town called Woodend in Victoria, famous for the hanging rock from the 1970s movie. The Holgate Mt Macedon Ale is a bonza full-flavoured pale ale, brewed using Vienna malt and Yankee hops. It pours an amazing golden honey colour with a light,

citrusy aroma and a hint of caramel to boot. The brewer was clearly working it like the rent’s due tomorrow to create what can best be described as pure drinking pleasure. It’s a warm and inviting drop, perfect for our current cold weather. Having said that, I can see myself drinking a lazy half dozen at over Christmas lunch too! The Holgate Mt Macedon Ale fully lives up to its lively slogan: ‘real beer, no bull’. It isn’t cheap for a half dozen, but I guarantee you’ll get plenty of bang for ya buck! She’s a ripper and I easily give this little number four and a half thumbs up out of five.

They’re two of Australia’s best-known music veterans, and they’re teaming up for a Sunshine Coast show. Friends for more than 40 years, their show is billed as a “relentless sequence of hit songs, laughter and mockery. Never scared to take a jibe at each other, on or off the stage.” From 1966 until his departure for America in 1975, singer, songwriter, keyboard player and producer Brian Cadd was one of the most prominent musicians on the local scene, famous for hits such as Ginger Man. e’ve always had a difficult relationship, the BMW X3 and I. Right from the outset, we just never hit it off. Perhaps it was partly because I was so fond of its big brother, the X5. Oh, sure there were times when we tried to make it work. Every couple of years, BMW would insist the X3 has changed – and I’d agree to give it another go. Every time, though, it seemed to end in disappointment. There were new engines – even a more luxurious interior at one stage – but the same old arguments always seemed to

crop up. Its gangly looks. Its choppy ride. Its in-between size. Now, the siren call of the X3 has come haunting me again. Only this time, I really think we can make it work. The all-new BMW X3 is here. And I’m ready to try again. Amazingly, it seems as if BMW has listened, and responded. Where it once looked awkward and out of whack, it’s now in perfect proportion. It looks like a shrunken-down version of the X5, which by any measure has always been one of the great-looking SUV designs. The new X3 has addressed the

lacklustre interior which also plagued the previous model. The original X3 looked downright cheap, and never quite reached the standards we expect of BMW. The new car does, without question. From the soft-touch surfaces to the smart-looking colour 6.5 inch iDrive screen, standard on all models and including satellite navigation and reversing camera, the X3 is a massive step forward. The new car, with its longer, wider wheelbase and revised suspension, feels very settled on the road. We tested the continued over >

Decoded, that means it’s an all-wheel-drive version (xDrive) with a three-litre, twin turbocharged six-cylinder engine – the same engine which earns a 3.0i or 3.5i tag when used in other models such as the 3 Series and 5 Series – but which has been detuned slightly. Most tempting to me, is the entry-level xDrive20d – which uses a tweaked version of the same excellent two-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel found in the 1, 3 and 5 Series models at a tasty starting price of $62, 200. BMW says that’s despite it including about $10,000 more standard equipment than the old X3. That money gets you most of the goodies in the more expensive models – iDrive, sat nav, head-up display and reversing camera, but at a price which makes the X3 highly competitive against class rivals, which have turned my head in the past. Perhaps no more, though. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship.

NIP AND TUCK TREATMENT FOR HONDA’S ODYSSEY WORDS Peter Atkinson THERE are probably few new cars that I feel better qualified to judge than the Honda Odyssey. You see, for the past seven years our family vehicle has been a much-loved, much-enjoyed Honda Odyssey, not terribly unlike the one we’re testing this week. The Odyssey has been around, in various forms, in Australia since 1994, but it really began to make its mark with this current design shape in 2003. Suddenly, having more than three kids in the back didn’t mean either a bulky SUV or a boxy converted delivery van. The new Odyssey builds upon that reputation in many ways – but has taken a step or two backwards in the process. First, the positive. An upgrade to the Odyssey’s 2.4 litre engine has given it marginally more power and peppier performance. Fuel efficiency has also been improved to an impressive 8.9L/100 kilometre

average. The chassis has also been tweaked, resulting in an even better ride and even sharper handling. While the wheelbase remains unchanged, there is extra leg-room for second and third-row passengers. On the safety front, the Odyssey now gets Dynamic Stability Control as standard, and driver vision has also been improved. The new Odyssey is quicker, smoother, roomier and safer, so what’s

not to like? Well, the jury’s out on the nd revised styling, and n we were less than impressed with the interior. The sweeping, space-age design of the dash on the previous model has been replaced by a less attractive and less user-friendly arrangement. That’s been mitigated somewhat by the addition of a touch-screen at

the top of the centre stack. It houses satellite navigation and also doubles as a reversing camera. On the positive side, the instrument panel has been upgraded with the addition of a digital trip computer. The standard model we tested can now be had for a very affordable $37,100. If you want the leather, sunroof and extra electricals of the luxury model you’ll be paying about an extra 10 grand on top of that. Unfortunately, our family has now grown to the point where we no longer need people-mover-style transport. Otherwise this new Odyssey would certainly still be on our shopping list. VOLVO THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX WORDS Peter Atkinson VOLVO station wagon. Are there three less exciting words in the English language? Three words that conjure up images of boxes, on top of boxes. OK, so Volvo has moved on a bit since the days of those squared off load-luggers of the ’70s and ’80s. But Volvo wagons have never exactly set the pulse racing. However, the Swedish marque’s new V60 wagon is a genuine head-

turner – every bit as pretty retty as its sibling S60 sedan that most agree is the best-looking car Volvo’s ever built. The V60 is a treat to drive. A new diesel engine, a new turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine and a healthy dose of extra standard equipment have pushed the S60 and V60 models towards the top of the European value-for-money stakes, with both now offering standard fare such as Volvo’s City Safety system.

There’s also a powered driver’s seat, rain sensing wipers, a seven-inch colour display screen as part of a high-end multimedia package, plus all the safety goodies you’d expect in a Volvo. We tested the S60 in entry-level T4 petrol spec, fitted with an engine that’s destined to create quite a stir in the Australian car market (soon to be used in the Aussie Ford Falcon). From just 1.6 litres of capacity, the T4 delivers 132 kilowatts, and coupled to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, it feels beefier than its tiny size would suggest. The benefit of the 1.6-litre engine comes at the petrol pump, with fuel economy we’re used to seeing from a small car, rather than a roomy mid-sizer like the S60. Even more frugal is Volvo’s newest diesel engine, the D3, fitted to our V60 wagon test machine.

We found it even more impressive than the T4 petrol. The only issue was a slight lag in engine response. The S60 has previously impressed us with its ride and handling – and the wagon variant is equally well-mannered on the road. Leather trim, an eight-speaker audio with iPod and Bluetooth streaming are part of the standard V60 fare, along with Volvo’s always well thought-out, beautifully presented cabin ambiance. The two new engines complement two existing powerplant options in the V60 and S60 – a 177kW, two-litre petrol T5 and the flagship 224kW, three-litre turbo T6. That’s enough to give this sexy new Swede some real performance cred. either a lender nor borrower be. It’s a nice idea and a catchy line, but few of us go through life without racking up some sort of debt. Whether it be a necessary evil, part of an investment strategy, or a silly splurge, we have all been there. The temptation is great – we are surrounded by institutions and organisations ready to lend us money or extend lines of credit. But not all debt is evil. So when is it good to go into debt? Let’s take a look.

AR IN G TH E DEBT LEDGER BAD DEBT • Consumables – two years interest free terms: ooh it’s very tempting, isn’t it? But buying a couch or fridge on credit is very bad debt. Every year thousands of Australians get caught out buying consumer products on credit and end up paying more than the product was worth, once the interest-free period ends. You might think you can pay it off in the interest-free period, but if you lose your job, how easy is it really to find $20 a week? The bottom line – if you can’t afford it, don’t buy it. You can always pick up a couch from Vinnies or use the laundromat. • Credit cards – interest rates charged on credit cards are usually much higher than those on other loans, and it is just too easy to use that little bit of plastic now and worry about paying it later. Cut up your credit card. Again, if you can’t afford it, don’t buy it.

GOOD DEBT • Real estate – unless you’ve come into a hefty inheritance or you’re on a seven-figure salary, if you want to buy property, you’ll need a mortgage to do it. And whether you are buying investment property or your own family home, this debt is considered a good one. For an investment, the interest you pay on a home loan is tax deductible, so there’s a helping hand

from the tax man to maintain your investment. You don’t get the same tax breaks on your own home, so some might not consider this good debt, but a home is necessary to provide shelter, plus it saves on paying rent and, assuming you hold it for long enough, will increase in value. So once you have paid off the debt, you’re left with a pretty valuable asset. • Small business – it’s true, plenty of people fail and lose money starting their own business, but few people launch a businesses with a view to lose cash. Entrepreneurs have to start somewhere, and generally all small business owners (and even large ones) have had to borrow cash to get started or expand. As such, this debt is generally considered to be a good one.

GREY AREAS There are some loans that are considered necessary debt or grey areas. They are: • Cars – many people refuse to borrow money to buy a car, instead saving cash for a new vehicle every 10 years or so, but most of us are not that disciplined and let’s face it, public transport on the Coast isn’t great. A car is a necessity for most, and so it falls into this list. Sure, interest on a car is a waste of money – car values, particularly new car values, fall very quickly. Some people buy only used cars

for this reason. The trick is to shop around, do your homework and haggle for the best price. • Consolidation loans – in theory these are a great idea. If you are already in debt, rolling your loans into one, say your home loan, and lowering weekly repayments, seems sensible, and for many people this is the only way to manage their debt. But beware that taking your credit card debt and sticking it on your home loan means you’ll be paying it off over a longer period – your weekly repayments will be reduced, but you’ll be stuck with the debt for longer. • Investments – leveraging, which is borrowing money at a lower interest rate than the potential return of the investment, is a strategy used by many a savvy investor. But it’s a risky one. If the investment fails, you are left with no asset and a big debt. Not for the faint-hearted or inexperienced. • Education – education has long been linked to success, so the better educated you are, the more likely you are to gain a well-paid job. Therefore, it can be argued that borrowing to pay for education is good debt, though it’s a bit of a grey area, so it falls into this list. Education costs are really an investment in you and your earning capacity. Though there are plenty of uni graduates who don’t use their degrees to gain better work, over the course of a lifetime, those who have a technical qualification or degree tend to get a good return on the investment of education.

The nursery has been operating for 22 years but will close its doors this month after the sale of the property. Steve Perry from RE/MAX Property Sales looked after the sale, and has now organised a large chattel auction to help the owner, Fay Stutt, move on from the property. “Everything must go as the property has been sold as a lifestyle property, not a going concern,” Perry says. The auction begins at 11am and will be run by Gordon Macdonald of Jason Andrew Auctioneers. It will operate under standard auction conditions, which means cash only on the day. The auction will follow on from another successful chattel sale at 35 Huntley Lane, Montville last Sunday. Auctioneer and principal Mike Burns from Elders Palmwoods says there was a good crowd of around 100 people, and fun, spirited bidding on almost 90 lots resulted in most being sold on the day.
