am one of those touchy talkers. When I’m chatting to someone I will often reach out to gently brush an arm or pat the other person on the shoulder. So it was gratifying for me to read in this week’s cover story (which is an extract from a book by Allan and Barbara Pease) that touching someone while you talk is, in many circumstances, a good idea. It’s fascinating all this body language stuff, and thanks to Barbara and Allan I learnt a lot about how critical it is to hold yourself in a way that other people will find inviting. Apparently we can all learn to be more charismatic and appealing. If you’re up for a bit of self-improvement flick over to page 8. Check out our news section starting on page 16 – this week you’ll notice there
] is a lot more local content as well as news from around the country and overseas. In agenda this week we meet a remarkable woman who is making a difference in the lives of the world’s poorest. It’s difficult not to feel down when reading about the world’s woes, but if there were more Jane Walkers on the planet what an amazing difference could be made. It feels good to give, and despite the fact she is surrounded by poverty, Jane Walker seems like a pretty happy soul – imagine if this country’s richest had the same attitude. Over in My Property Preview we take a look at changes to stamp duty concession rules. When buying a property in the future, many buyers will save thousands. Not sure what to do with that extra cash? I am sure Jane Walker could put it to good use.

EXPLAIN
PREVIEW Best-selling authors and body language experts Allan and Barbara Pease offer these winning body language strategies that give you the edge.
P
eople form up to 90 per cent of their opinions about you in under four minutes and 60 to 80 per cent of the impact you will make on them is non-verbal. The following strategies will give you the best opportunity to make a positive effect on others. 1. KEEP YOUR PALMS UP
Keep your palms visible when you talk. The response to the ancient signal is hard-wired into the brain. They will read you as non-threatening and will respond positively to you.
[ 8 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J UN E 29, 2012
8.indd 1
2. KEEP YOUR FINGERS TOGETHER People who keep their fingers closed and their hands below their chin when they talk command the most attention. Using open fingers or having your hands held above the chin is perceived as less authoritative.
3. KEEP YOUR ELBOWS OUT Sitting with your elbows on the armrest of a chair is perceived as a position of power and conveys a strong, upright image. Humble, defeated individuals let their arms drop inside the arms of the chair and they keep their elbows close to their bodies to protect themselves. They are perceived as fearful or negative, so avoid sitting like this.

Barbara and Allan offer these tips on how to make a lasting first impression
When you next meet someone new and shake hands, extend your left arm, give a light touch on their elbow or hand as you shake and repeat their name to confirm you heard it correctly
• When you enter a room, walk in briskly, without hesitation. • Keep your handshake vertical and return the grip you receive. • Smile. Show your front teeth and smile with your whole face • Raise your eyebrows for a split second.
4. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE Respect the person’s personal space, which will be greatest in the opening minutes of a new meeting. If you move in to close, the person may respond by sitting back, leaning away or using gestures that reveal their irritation, such as drumming their fingers or clicking a pen. Sit closer to familiar people but further back form new ones. Sit closer to those of similar age and further back from significantly older or younger ones.
• Use the person’s name twice in the first 15 seconds. • Angle your body to 45 degrees away from the other person. • Use clear, uncomplicated, deliberate movements and gestures.
5. MIRROR THEIR BODY LANGUAGE Mirroring the other person’s body language and speech patterns builds a rapport quickly. In a new meeting with someone, mirror his sitting position, posture, body angle, gestures, facial expressions and tone of voice. Before long, they’ll start to feel that there’s something about you they like – they’ll describe you as easy to be with. When presenting to couples, watch for who mirrors whom and uncover the decision-maker. If the woman makes the initial movements and the man copies, there is little point to asking him for a decision.
customers made 80 per cent more tips from male diners than the non-touching waitresses, while male waiters increased their earnings by 32 per cent regardless of which sex they touched. In other words, skilful elbow and hand touching can give you up to three times the chance of getting what you want.
• Pack your things calmly and deliberately when you exit. If you’re a woman, turn and smile as you leave.
6. MATCH THEIR SPEECH RATE A person’s speed of speaking reveals the rate at which their brain can analyse information. Speak at the same rate or slightly slower than the other person and mirror their inflection and intonation. Studies show that others describe feeling ‘pressured’ when someone speaks faster than they do.
9. REPEAT THEIR NAME When you next meet someone new and shake hands, extend your left arm, give a light touch on their elbow or hand as you shake and repeat their name to confirm you heard it correctly. Not only does this make the person feel important, it lets you remember their name through the repetition.
7. UNCROSS ALL ARMS Arms folded across the chest is an attempt to put a barrier between the person and something they don’t like. A person’s recall of what was said decreases by up to 40 per cent when they fold their arms. Change someone’s folded-arms position by handling them something to hold or giving them something to do. Give them a pen, book, brochure, sample or written test to encourage them to unfold their arms and lean forward. To be persuasive, never cross your own arms in any face-to-face meetings.
8. TOUCH THEIR ELBOW Mirror the touch you receive. If they don’t touch you, leave them alone. Experiments however, have found when a person is touched lightly on the elbow for no longer than three seconds, they are 68 per cent more likely to be co-operative than if they weren’t touched at all. Studies show that female waitresses who were taught to touch the elbows and hands of their dining
MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU
9.indd 1
10. AVOID TOUCHING YOUR FACE Studies show that when someone is concealing information or lying, their nose and face touching increases dramatically due to an increase in blood pressure when lying. Even if you have and itchy nose, people who don’t know you may think you’re lying. So keep your hands away from your face.

11. PRACTICE IT ALL Before you go into an important interview or meeting, sit quietly for a few minutes and mentally rehearse the above mentioned things, seeing yourself doing them well. When your mind can see them clearly, your body will be able to carry them out. You need to cast yourself into a believable role in an interview, so practice mentally, in advance, how you will act, if you want others to take you seriously. Evidence shows that, with practice, these skills will soon become second nature to you and serve you well for the rest of your life.

DWAYNE’S DESPERATE SEARCH FOR ANSWERS
BEN VOS B
WORDS Nathan Evans
Dwayne is looking for closure
D
wayne Cunningham has told of his desperate search forr closure, 18 years after his mother Deidre vanished without a trace. He wants the inquest into his mother’s death reopened. Cunningham, just 31 when he got the call from Coast detectives advising that his mum, Deidre, had gone missing after leaving a party on June 12, 1994, left his home in Canberra and rushed to
the Coast. Now 49, twice-divorced and living permanently at Caloundra, his search continues. In two decades he estimates having spent close to $100,000 on his quest for closure, enlisting the help of investigators, cadaver dogs and even psychics. Cunningham says he won’t rest until his mum’s case is solved. She is one mum of m more than 10 Sunshine Coast missing persons, as revealed in miss MWP on June 8. MW “As the months passed, I hired private investigators and hir even psychics to try to find her ev but after a while the big bu question that remained was q ‘will I ever find her?’,” he says. ‘w Cunningham Cunn says the inquest declared Deidre missing, presumed dead. A psychic claimed his mum died not far from the party she left on Hinley Avenue, Maroochydore, but her body has never been found. On the 18th anniversary of her disappearance, Cunningham remembers a petite but “boisterous” woman who

drove race cars and cranes, worked as a car detailer and later at a Wollongong steel works, where she served as a union delegate fronting crowds of thousands during strike action. “We were really close. This has put 20 years on my life.” He says the discovery of a body on the Coast several years ago, later confirmed as another missing woman, as well as the discovery of human remains, later identified as Daniel Morcombe, brought mixed emotions. “When police said the woman found was not mum I was devastated; I was happy for the family that found closure but I was devastated it was not mum,” he says. “When they found Daniel I just sat there thinking ‘that could be mum they’ve found’. When it was confirmed as Daniel I was relieved for the family. You have no idea what it’s like to not know. “This rules my life, and I’ve let it, because I want closure, and until that day, I won’t stop.”

The even better news about Uni-Industries Several months ago I wrote about how satisfied I was with the installation of my rooftop solar system by the Uni-Industries team. It was all good news - a painless, smooth operation with no mess and no fuss. I was, at the time, anticipating a reduction in my next electricity bill but I was not expecting a huge decrease in the cost, as we had experienced almost three months of depressingly wet and grey weather.
17.indd 1
Imagine my surprise then, when I received my first electricity account and read the magic words: ‘no payment required’. This was definitely the sweetest bill I had ever opened! Not only was I not required to make any payment but I also had a substantial credit. My solar system is well on the way to paying for itself, and fortunately I had ensured that the installation occurred while the Queensland State Government is still
offering a great solar bonus feed-in tariff. It is a very generous scheme and is still running, but for how long? Are you still mulling over the idea of going solar? If so, pick up the phone now and call Uni-Industries - the experts in solar PV panel installation.

The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope will give us our farthest peek into the universe. “It’s been a fairly good team effort, we’ve got research players such as CSIRO and the International Centre for Radio Astronomy, and in addition the Australian Government has been progressive on the whole in their dealings and similarly, the New Zealand and WA governments,” says Humphreys, at home in Noosa. CSIRO, an organisation where Humphreys worked for 16 years, is among those represented in the consortium. A major Australian part of the project is expected to begin science operations from 2013 following completion of 36 dishes at the site

A
s news broke in May that Australia, South Africa and its African partner countries would jointly host the world’s largest radio telescope project – a $2 billion enterprise – Noosa’s John Humphreys toasted a victory. The Coast local played a pivotal role in Australia’s successful bid, having chaired the consortium of 24 major organisations driving the tender.
in mid-west Western Australia. “It’s always hard to predict exactly what will come from this project, but you only have to look at wi-fi as an example of what can happen. That was originally a CSIRO innovation developed for looking into black holes,” says Humphreys. The project will provide new avenues for innovation and new technologies, says Humphreys. “Looking at renewable energy, we will need to explore how to get 24/7 power out to a desolate site that is subject to extreme heat – up to 50 degrees,” he says. Phased Array Feed radio cameras will allow ASKAP to examine the sky 100 times faster than any previous radio telescope, by December 2013. Federal Science Minister Chris Evans says the ASKAP will be of benefit to Australia for 50 or 60 years. “It’s going to drive science, research, innovation and have a lot of industrial applications,” he says.

They come, they play, and they stay for winter An estimated 2000 visitors are expected to flock to the Sunshine Coast for up to three months for the 50th anniversary of the Winter Bowls Carnival, beginning July 3. Chairman of the Winter Carnival committee, George Lock, says visitors come from all over Australia and New Zealand. “It becomes part of their lifestyle. They come here, stay and spend. They don’t just visit to play in the tournaments they also play social events at the local bowls club during the week,” he says. Sunshine Coast Destination Limited CEO Steve Cooper says sporting events are invaluable to the region in terms of boosting the local economy particularly through the accommodation, hospitality and retail sectors.

Mudjimba’s Mick Dan this week jetted off to the Galapagos Islands on a mission to help save the region’s declining sea lion population. The University of the Sunshine Coast Honours student will spend six months overseas as part of a project researching climate change, with the warming of the water threatening the sea lions. Dan, 30, graduated last year with a Bachelor of Environmental Science and has chosen the Galapagos sea lions as his USC Honours project this year. He secured a $4000 grant from the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility to support his studies, as well as additional funding from USC. “I’ve been travelling for 10 years to places like India, Nepal, China and Korea,” says Dan. “I’m interested in conservation and ecology and how we can best prepare our species and environment for climate change. “Sea lions are top of the food chain so they will feel the effects of climate change as the water becomes too warm for their food.”

JAMIESON NAMES PORTFOLIO COUNCILLORS Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson will head council’s economic development portfolio in a move he says is important to achieving his election promises. “I think it’s important I take the lead on economic development – I made it my top priority in the election and I am determined to develop a stronger economy,” he says. Councillors Stephen Robinson, Jason O’Pray and Peter Cox will support Jamieson, overseeing three special economic development sectors: new and Christian Dickson to take emerging industries; tourism, sport and major on corporate planning events; and medical precinct and education. “Deputy Mayor Chris Thompson was a well-respected finance portfolio councillor and I am keen for him to continue his focus in that area,” says Jamieson. Thompson will also look after water. Tony Wellington will oversee the environmental portfolio, Christian Dickson will tackle corporate planning, Tim Dwyer will oversee regional projects, and Ted Hungerford will focus on service delivery. Jenny McKay will lead community programs, with Rick Baberowski on transport, Russell Green on regional planning and Greg Rogerson to chair the place management and delivery portfolio. “The portfolio areas reflect the strategic priorities of the council for the next four years,” says Jamieson. “Councillors have an obligation to represent their division, but just as important, they need to be working for the region as a whole.

ustralian victims of past terrorist attacks have been “dudded” by government legislation, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says. Victims of future overseas terror attacks will be eligible for compensation of up to $75,000 after a government bill passed through parliament on Friday. The Labor bill was similar to private legislation introduced by Abbott last year, except that his bill would have also compensated past victims. Abbott tried to amend the government’s bill. AAP
The NSW Government has created “two standards of workers” by exempting emergency services personnel from controversial WorkCover reforms, the state opposition says. The worker’s compensation scheme overhaul, which caps benefits and medical expenses for injured workers, formally passed parliament just before 3am (AEST) on last Friday morning. After a day of angry protests, amendments were made to the

Olivia Newton-John says she was inspired to lend her name to Melbourne’s new cancer centre to ensure public hospital patients had the same quality treatment she had during her fight with the disease. The Australian entertainment icon has spent the best part of a decade fundraising for the Olivia NewtonJohn Cancer and Wellness Centre, which is attached to the Austin Hospital in the city’s east. Those efforts included a fundraising walk across the Great Wall of China. The centre will combine cancer treatment, research and complementary therapies. AAP

The Queensland opposition has called on Premier Campbell Newman to give his MPs a conscience vote on plans to deny same-sex couples surrogacy rights. Opposition leader Annastacia Palaszczuk has told reporters the government is being “mean” in winding back gay couples’ rights to have surrogate children. “This law was bringing Queensland in line with other states,” she says. She says LNP MPs should be given a conscience vote. AAP

GARBAGE PREVIEW In the ultimate recycling exercise, one British woman has spent the past 16 years helping poverty-stricken Philippine families transform rubbish into fashion items that are buying them a better future.

n the midst of the Philippines’ most notorious slum, British expat Jane Walker transforms lives by turning rubbish into top-end fashion items. A unique four-storey building houses the Philippine Christian Foundation, an organisation Walker founded 16 years ago to help scavengers at the Smokey Mountain garbage dump in Manila’s chaotic bayside Tondo district. Walker teaches mothers to make colourful bags, purses and jewellery using items commonly discarded by the public – toothpaste tubes, plastic bottles and lollypop wrappers, magazine pages and soft drink cans. “It’s inspiring when you realise such a simple project helps so many families,” says Walker, 48. “We design things from laptop bags and iPod cases, computer cases, all ranges of different handbags, shopping bags, clutch bags, fashion accessories and even placemats made from waste paper.” The products are sold in the country’s biggest department store chain, as well as to high-end and specialty shops in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, the Middle East and Singapore, with price tags ranging from $US10 to $US100 ($9.85 to $98.50). A portion of the proceeds goes to the mothers and the staff, while the rest goes towards financing the foundation’s operations. Apart from teaching livelihood skills, Walker’s foundation also runs a primary school where up to 500 slum children are enrolled at any given time free of charge. The building is remarkable – and true to the foundation’s recycling mantra. It is made from shipping containers welded and cemented together in what
Jane Walker has provided hope for hundreds of poor families Walker says is the first such structure housing a school anywhere in the world. Walker came to the Philippines in the mid-1990s on a soul-searching holiday expecting to soak up some sun in a tropical paradise. Instead she found herself lost in a cab that drove her across Manila’s bayside Tondo district and its teeming slums. She was both amazed and repulsed by Smokey Mountain, a sprawling open dump known for its constantly billowing black smoke that once symbolised everything wrong in the South-East Asian country known for corruption and crushing poverty. “It was the most shocking scene for someone coming from the West,” Walker says. “Many slept on the ground, there was no running water, no electricity. They had absolutely nothing. They scratched a living off the garbage.”

FAST FACTS According to the United Nations,
one billion people around the world live in slums. If left unchecked that figure will grow to three billion by 2050. Census data from Brazil reveals that in 2010, almost
11.5 million people (or six per cent of the population of 190 million) lived in slums. She returned to her native Southampton, haunted by what she had seen and determined to do something about it. She quit her high-paying job as a UK publishing executive and moved to Manila. Using her own money and donations from friends, she took over an abandoned warehouse near the dumps and converted it into a school. But money soon dried up, forcing her to look for other sources of funding. “I thought, ‘Why not make garbage into something we can profit from?’” she says. “And that’s how it began.” Walker scoured the dumps with mothers, and encouraged their children to enrol in her school. She became known to slum folk simply as “Ma’am”, but the sight of her trudging barefoot through stinking black mud earned her the moniker “angel of the dump” from the local press and much-needed publicity for her cause. As word of her work spread, corporate sponsors lined up to donate cash that enabled her to expand her work, including construction of the new school in 2009 at a cost of one million dollars. In 2006, Queen Elizabeth made Walker a Member of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of her work. Today the foundation has about 80 full-time staff, including teachers and social workers, and about 150
mothers regularly turn up for work, says Marcel Clado, the centre’s project manager. A sponsorship program also has private individuals in the Philippines and abroad pay for children’s education at the foundation’s school or nearby institutions. Smokey Mountain was closed in the late 1990s, with an embarrassed government putting up low-cost housing in the area. But those who still couldn’t afford to pay for the homes simply moved across the road where another garbage site opened, and Tondo continues to house tens of thousands of Manila’s poorest. Charlita Carceno, a 51-year-old mother whose three children are enrolled at the school, says Walker enabled her to dream of one day finally leaving the dumps. “I realised there is life beyond our existence and that you can improve your lot if you work hard enough,” says Carceno, who sews scraps of material into cloths for kitchen use. Reflections like that keep Walker going. “They are the most inspiring group of people,” she says. “They are so poor, yet they have the most positive outlook in life. When I see children starting to learn and families beginning to leave the dumps, I realise I’ve made a difference. And that’s the best reward of all.” AAP

] THE WEEK THAT WAS
IMPACTS OF THE CARBON TAX
Justin Scattini is from Ord Minnett in Buderim
O
fficial government modelling suggests the macroeconomic impact of the carbon tax will be marginal. They estimate a drag on growth in the economy of just 0.1 per cent – effectively a rounding error. We assume a drag of 0.2 per cent on GDP over 2012–13, slightly more than the official line. The assumed price impact is also modest, according to the government’s modelling. This assumes that headline inflation will rise 0.7 percentage points above whatever inflation pressure is in the economy. This implies that the second-round price impact – price
[ 26 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J UN E 29, 2012
26.indd 1
rises compelled by higher prices for energy – will be modest. The risk is that the macroeconomic drag from the start of the tax is larger than the modest impact suggested by the government. The Coalition has conducted a strident assault on the tax and has promised to repeal it. This may have a negative impact on sentiment that adds to the drag from the start of the tax. Many households and some firms already feel anxious about the economic outlook. The partisan debate about the start of the tax could worsen this. The near-term impact, though, perversely, could see a boost to growth in the economy. The government has already paid significant compensation to lowerincome households, which is designed to offset and, in some cases, more than offset the expected cost of the rise in energy prices. The payment of cash in the current quarter could actually lift household spending,
although the impact probably will be short-lived. We assume a 1.1 per cent lift in inflation this 2012 calendar year. We do not expect a material inflation impact beyond this. The main risk is that the inflation impact of the tax is larger than official government forecasts imply. In particular, the second-round price effects risk being larger, with the transport and other service industries hinting they could push through carbon tax-induced price rises. Of course the Opposition is the clear favourite to win the next general election, which needs to be held no later than November 30, 2013. If the Coalition went down the route of a double dissolution we estimate the carbon tax could be repealed by the end of calendar 2014. GLOSSIES WINNERS PRAISED The winners of the 2012 Living Smart Glossies Awards were announced recently, with the Sunshine Coast mayor praising the dedication of the local community to creating a sustainable future. Altum Constructions took out the Golden Glossy for Excellence in Sustainable Design, while Rockcote Enterprise’s Bob and Chris Cameron received the Glossies Hall of Fame award for “their ongoing contribution to the region as leaders of sustainable production and business management”, Mark Jamieson said in a statement. The mayor added, “It’s important the Sunshine Coast has a sustainable community, a sustainable environment and a sustainable economy.” Other businesses to secure awards were Tom Wegener Surfboards and Global Boss International, who were dual winners of the Solutions category, and architecture firm PlaceSense,
which took out the Resource Saver Award. The issue of sustainability was also a topic at the DestinationQ forum, which the mayor attended in Cairns this week. He joined other political leaders, tourism experts and industry representatives to discuss how to get the state’s tourism industry back on track. Ecotourism, marketing, investment and infrastructure were a few of the topics covered. “The Sunshine Coast, like many other tourist destinations in Queensland, has been hit hard by the GFC – and we need to rebuild our market,” Jamieson says. “The forum is about tourism regions in Queensland working together to get a better result for everyone.”

Find out the 7 biggest mistakes you could be making to cause Permanent Depression, Anxiety or ADHD Perfect for the (undercover) outdoor room, this director’s chair, $70, is bright and cheerful. From equatorhomewares.com.
Are you not as happy as you used to be? Is stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia or ADHD overwhelming you? Are antidepressants not working for you? Do you find yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, clearing your mind, or do you wake too often through the night? Do you sometimes experience anxious sensations, like being able to hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow? We had an incredible response from all who were logged on for our Solving the Puzzle That Creates Anxiety, Depression and ADHD webinar. When you put it all together, it makes sense. There are seven key triggers that can cause anxiety, nervousness, depression or a lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack

of concentration, including ADHD in children can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms, or perhaps all of them. The seven key common triggers that affect your brain cause a compounding effect your brain cannot deal with, which leads to long-term, and then permanent, brainwave pattern changes. These changes affect your personality, mood, and ability to think and cope, forever. Fortunately it can be quite easy to address. One of our patients, who has suffered depression for decades, reported out of sight improvement after one month and other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment. These results are permanent and medication free! Thoroughly researched and proven, these steps improve brain function immeasurably in adults and children.
If you would like to find out more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or view my webinar on the causes and effective treatment for Anxiety and Depression. A webinar is simply a seminar that you can watch on the website at www.advancedwellness.com.au. It’s easy and it’s free. Consumers now have more choice then ever before in their media consumption, from traditional print, TV and radio, to internet programs, social networking, and video games. Consider the old images from the 1950s, ’60s, and 1970s of families sitting around one television

watching the hit shows of the day. Nowadays, according to a May 2012 study by the Interactive Advertising Bureau, “Sixty-three per cent of media-savvy consumers use a connected device while watching live TV and 66 per cent do the same when watching recorded programming on DVRs.” As a result of this shift, consumers are demanding improved quality, engagement and integration with content. Of course, traditional media still has a great deal of credibility and is a very important contributor to the success of your business. A typical scenario of a successful campaign in our current market will have advertising and public relations driving lots of traffic to your website. As a business you need to recognise how your audience is changing and how you can leverage that change to improve your business. But more importantly, it is essential to understand how to integrate social media with traditional media. There are several points you need to consider before you build your social and traditional integration
framework and start to work with the two forms of media. The questions are: • Your goals: what is your business goal and what is your communications goal? • Your target market: if possible, try to identify with your target market on a more personal level. • Connecting with your target market: which types of media do they consume? • Interacting with your target market: once you have established contact, you need to figure out how to make them stay connected to you. • Getting your target market to share you with their friends: How can you make them advocates of your brand and spread your message? When you integrate social and traditional media, you give a great deal more strength to your campaign than if you had single-layer marketing. Integrating adds another dimension and you will see that the success of your business critically depends on that integration.

A TASTE OF FRANCE AT HOME PREVIEW Travis Schultz is managing partner of Schultz Toomey O’Brien Lawyers and lover of fine food and wine.
T
he French have long been regarded as staunchly parochial viticultural purists, so it’s somewhat surprising that some of France’s biggest names would arrive in Australia to establish a cool climate vineyard. But that’s exactly what happened when Remy Martin (who makes the king of expensive cognacs) and Krug (maker of French champagne at $300-plus a bottle) got together in the early 1960s to establish a vineyard in the cool climate of the Victorian Pyrenees. At first, the joint venture focused on growing white grapes for brandy, but it was soon realised that fruit of such high quality was better suited to making table wines. And so it was that the Australian public was to become blessed with a range of wines that have the power of warm summer days but the finesse of cool climate ripening.
[ 34 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J UN E 29, 2012
34.indd 1
The froggy influence on the wines didn’t end with its founders, as the semblance of Blue Pyrenees wines to the Bordeaux style is evident to this day. Perhaps this similarity is due to the gravelly soils that cover the valley floor and produce firm wines that are dry, but at times ascetic while young. In Bordeaux, the winemaking centres on the cab sav and merlot varietals, so it’s really no surprise that at Blue Pyrenees the emphasis is the same. The Blue Pyrenees 2008 Estate Red ($35) is probably as ‘Bordeaux’ as you’ll find outside Europe. The product is a blend of cabernet sauvignon (69 per cent) with a dash of merlot (30 per cent) and just a hint of shiraz. It’s deep in colour, softened slightly up front by the merlot, but supported through the back by a dominant tannic influence. It’s definitely dry and will only get better as it settles down over the next five to 10 years. If a softer style is your thing, then the Blue Pyrenees Merlot 2010 might be right up your alley. It has a modest nose that makes the sweet
cherried fruit at the front of the palate even more appealing. There’s more than enough berry action to carry it through until the cedar tannins give it structure and sophistication in the finale. Not bad for less than 20 bucks a bottle. The Victorian Pyrenees might be continents away from the south-west of France, but if you light the fire, close your eyes, and take a sip, you could almost hear La Marseillaise.

KIWI BREW WITH BIG HOPS ACTION PREVIEW Hot 91.1 FM breakfast host Todd Widdicombe gives his opinion on the best brews of the week.
Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink as part of my ‘research’ for this review, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn’t drink this beer, they might be out of work and their plans for the future would be shattered. So I say to myself, “C’mon Toddy boy, its clearly time to suck it up and drink this beer and let the workers’ dreams come true; damn the consequences and the effects on my liver, be a man of the people and treat this work as a community service.” And so it is with a total
selflessness that would do Mother Teresa proud, I bring you another tasty treat from the Great Beer Universe. This week we cross the ditch yet again to explore another choice bro beverage from the land of the long white cloud. This time around it’s Macs Hop Rocker Pilsner. First things first: obligatory Kiwi gag – CHECK! What’s a Hindu? It lays iggs brew! Macs Hop Rocker is a fullbodied naturally brewed pilsener that comes up absolute trumps with its citrus aroma and full tilt hit of hops all blended to give you a tasty crisp finish every time. It’s a beautlooking beer too; the bottle’s a treat

My mate Fergo put me onto this one and I took a few up the beach to Teewah a couple of weekends ago with some mates and it was a dead-set winner! Trust me, you need to get all over this like Joe Hockey on a fresh cream bun. Get carried away with the Floating Bridges
Children’s classic brought to life on stage
With the release of their debut album in June, The Floating Bridges, the rockin’ five-piece roots, reggae, funk band from the Sunshine Coast are now touring extensively through metropolitan and regional locations all over the country. Known for their energetic live shows, the group are looking to entertain punters far and wide in a bid to gain national attention. With supports for such artists as John Butler, Jimmy Barnes and Xavier Rudd already under their belts, the band is proving to be one of the fresh talents to look out for.
From the Queensland Theatre Company and Matrix Theatre comes the classic children’s story, Treasure Island. It’s a new adaptation of the original classic pirate tale, featuring 16 characters and two actors. A wonderful coming of age story, it’s described as a magical theatre experience for the whole family, exploring themes of adventure and escapism, role models and overcoming fears.

DON’T FORGET TO HYDRATE IN WINTER
I
t may be winter, but that doesn’t stop active people dashing outside for a cold run or bike ride. But while they’d never skip their trusty water bottle in summer, many forget hydration is also important in winter – sometimes even more so. Here’s the science: first, colder air is dryer, so it must be moisturised when we breathe it in, using up more of our body’s hydration than when breathing summer air. In addition, that cold air has to be warmed up before it hits the lungs, which takes up more moisture, as well as energy. The big problem in winter is you often don’t feel thirsty, even though you may actually be dehydrated. Because obvious symptoms of dehydration, such as thirst, may give you no warning that you need liquid
fast, it’s best to put winter hydration on a time schedule. Use a thermal bottle if possible and fill it with warm water – it will be more comfortable to drink, and you won’t have to use extra moisture to warm it up inside your body. Think of drinking at least a cup of water every hour. If you’re outside and active, take a hydration break at least every two hours and consume at least a litre of water. While plain water is best, liquid intake can also be in the form of soup, herbal tea (but forget about coffee, black tea or alcohol, which are diuretics and will cause you to eliminate water). If you keep yourself well hydrated in winter, you’ll enjoy the cold weather much more, and you’ll also find you’re more physically capable while outdoors. AAP

pend $150 grand on a car and you’re bound to get yourself plenty of buttons. Buttons to adjust everything from temperature to the firmness of the seats, from the pitch of the audio system to the pitch of the headlights. But among the myriad buttons in the MercedesBenz C63 AMG, one sets it apart. The start button. The big, round lump of stainless steel to the right of the steering column that fires up the Benz’s remarkable, attention-grabbing 6.2 litres of V8 magic. Press it and only then, do you become fully aware that this is no ‘ordinary’ Mercedes C-Class. Power output is a thunderous 336 kilowatts and 600 Newton metres – enough to rocket this pert little sedan to the speed limit in a staggering 4.5 seconds – while emitting that guttural, blood-curdling V8 wail. It sounds like a racing car because that’s pretty-much what it is. The penalty, of course, is that this is one thirsty little critter.

The AMG sports seats are brilliant and even feature pneumatic chambers, inflated at the push of a button, so you can custom-fit the seat to your shape. The C63 gets the top-spec version of Benz’s COMAND cabin management system. The brilliant colour screen in the middle of the instrument panel displays everything from sat-nav directions to your
current fuel consumption. It gets an added boost in the C63 – a special AMG tab that adds not only detailed engine information but one more function: a lap timer. Just what you need in a family sedan. But we’ve already established this is no average sedan, now haven’t we?
TECH STUFF 6.2-litre AMG alloy V8 engine produces 336kW@6800rpm; 600Nm@5000rpm (Performance Package as tested boosts power to 358kW); seven-speed AMG Speedshift MCT dual-clutch transmission with wheelmounted paddle-shifters and four-modes, including Race Start function. FEATURES Blind-spot assist; lanekeeping assist; adaptive high-beam assist; Distronic radar-guided cruise control; self-parking function, reversing camera; premium audio with Bluetooth and audio streaming; pneumatic leather sports seats; electric windows, seats and mirrors; TFT display with satellite navigation and online data access. THIRST 12l/100km (official combined figure). VERDICT Probably the best dollarfor-dollar performance car in the world. BOTTOM LINE $152,800 (plus onroad costs).

ne of the world’s most sought-after classic cars, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, has been sold for a record price of $US35 million ($35.3 million) in a private sale. Dutch-born businessman Eric Heerema sold the Ferrari to Craig McCaw in the United States. According to reports, the price was about $US4 million more than British businessman John Hunt got for a similar GTO he sold several weeks ago. The latest sale price was pushed up by the car’s history. It was driven by Stirling Moss’s fellow team driver

The previous record for the most expensive car had been held by a 1936 Type 57SC Bugatti Atlantic. American collector Peter Mullin purchased the pre-war Bugatti through a private transaction. DPA
New design director for Holden Andrew Smith has been appointed the new Holden design director. Born in Gilgandra, NSW, Smith has enjoyed a 20-year, international career with General Motors, leading interior, exterior and advanced design, as well as global architecture development and concept car creation on three continents. Smith joined Holden in 1992, eventually becoming responsible for the exterior design of the VU ute, Sandman panel van and Utester concepts before being promoted to interior design manager leading the VE Commodore and WM Statesman/Caprice program.

STAMP OF
APPROVAL PREVIEW You could save thousands on your next property purchase with the newly reinstated stamp duty concession. Read our guide to find out if you’re eligible.
P
remier Campbell Newman is making good on the LNP pre-election promise to ease the burden on the state’s property industry and home buyers. On 10 April 2012, Newman announced that Cabinet approved the reinstatement of an important concession. The stamp duty concession for non-first-home buyers purchasing a principal place of residence is back and it’s estimated the move, which comes into effect on July 1, will save individual buyers up to $7000. Stamp duty is simply a tax collected by the State Government, and the current rule is that a concession is available for the transfer of a purchaser’s first home. No duty applies for homes valued up to $500,000, and a phasing-out rebate applies for values up to $600,000. This concession is available only to first-home buyers who satisfy certain requirements. Before August 1, 2011, a duty concession was also available to buyers who weren’t purchasing their first home, but the then
Queensland Government dropped the concession for non-first-home buyers, hoping to raise much-needed revenue. Less than a year later, the concession is back in. For Queensland home buyers the news is good, provided they meet the concession requirements. The home being purchased can be a new or established dwelling and the buyer can have owned property before, so the concession isn’t a boost or grant to encourage new buyers into the market or new homes to be built.
The stamp duty concession for non-first home buyers … will save individual buyers up to $7000 Buyers will have to meet some conditions, such as moving into the home within a year of buying it and staying there for at least a year. According to the Office of State Revenue, “Where the concession applies, a concessional transfer duty rate of $1 for each $100 or part of $100 will apply to the first $350,000 of the consideration or value of the home. Duty at the general rates will apply to any remaining part of the consideration or value. The transfer duty rate structure and the phasing-out arrangements for the first home concession that existed before August 1, 2011 will also be reinstated for contracts entered into on or after July 1, 2012.” Purchasers are warned the government will be on the lookout for buyers who are making arrangements to push the transfer into July in order to avoid the tax. Any buyer who has made arrangements with a seller to purchase the property but attempts to delay signing the contract until July 1 will probably find the agreement scrutinised by the government and will have some explaining to do.

REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said in a recent statement that the changes to stamp duty rules are welcomed by the real estate industry. “The PPR [principal place of residence] stamp duty concession was removed at a very inopportune time last year when the Queensland economy was still struggling to recover from our summer of natural disasters,” he said. “Its reinstatement for homes bought as a principal place of residence from 1 July will save buyers thousands but will also re-establish Queensland as one of Australia’s lowest jurisdictions for stamp duty on residential property. “If you add this to our affordable property prices, compared to other capital cities, then we are likely to start seeing a return of interstate migrants which will be of benefit to our broader economy.” As a key election policy of the LNP, Kardash said it was important the new State Government had kept its promise to address the increasing cost of living pressures on Queenslanders. “The Queensland property market has had an air of greater confidence since the start of this year, so the return of the PPR concession will add to these strengthening levels of activity,” he said.

adly, this week’s unique home isn’t for sale, but it does boast one of the most unusual facades we’ve come across on this page. The Milk Carton House is the work of Melbourne-based architect Simon Thornton, who extended an Edwardianstyle weatherboard home in Brunswick, in the city’s inner north, to resemble a giant Tetrapak milk carton – “albeit slightly stretched, and with the bottom part cut off”. The extension sits on a tiny, 24- square metre footprint but remains true to detail, including a use-by date. The owners even found light fittings shaped like milk drops and worked ‘spilled milk’ landscaping into the garden. Thornton’s signature style, which he calls ‘fiction architecture’, has also resulted in the Gryphon House – based on the mythical creature of the same name – that includes a chimney shaped like a tail. LITTLE MOUNTAIN – Calling All Developers This is the perfect opportunity for developers with a more modest budget to create a very commercial project. Walking distance to shops with extensive ocean views this property has endless potential restricted only by your imagination. After 20yrs of watching the ships sail past Caloundra this old sea captain has decided to move on to something easier to maintain. Parcels of land this size are very hard to find in such a central location so take the time to have a look through this private botanical garden setting before it disappears for good.

SOLAR SAVINGS
O
ver the past decade many city residents have moved to our hinterland region in search of a more sustainable lifestyle, taking advantage of home-grown vegies, chook pens and renewable energy sources such as solar power. As MPP reported back in January, solar is a growing industry on the Sunshine Coast, with many homeowners – on acreage as well as in typical suburban properties – looking to cut back on rising electricity costs by generating their own power. Under Queensland’s Solar Bonus Scheme, residents with an eligible solar power system receive a tariff for any excess power they feed back into the public grid, which reduces their yearly bills and helps pay off the cost of their system over time. At the moment this rate is set at 44 cents per kilowatt hour; however on June 25 the State Government announced it would cut the feed-in tariff to eight cents per kilowatt hour, effective July 10. On June 22 the Government also closed off its Solar Hot Water Rebate program, a move it says will save ratepayers up to $10 million. State Minister for Energy and Water Supply, Mark McArdle, said in a statement that the Solar Bonus Scheme had met its objective of stimulating the solar industry and making solar technology more affordable for Queenslanders. Citing an estimated yearly cost of $54 per household to keep the scheme running at current rates until 2014, McArdle said the Government’s new priority was to reduce the impact of the scheme on all Queensland residents. “We need to act now to minimise what

GREAT AUCTION DESPITE RAIN
Queensland householders and businesses pay for the solar scheme,” McArdle said. “This approach will provide certainty for the Queensland solar PV industry and minimise any short-term impacts on investment and jobs. While consumers will still have to weigh up the costs and benefits, the government believes the replacement tariff will still make solar PV systems a viable proposition for many households.” Residents considering purchasing a solar system can still secure the higher feed-in tariff if they apply for the Bonus Scheme before midnight on July 9. However, Cameron Lawrence from Inflow Solar and Energy Efficiency says purchasers shouldn’t rush into using any brand or installer before the cut-off date, and advises them to seek independent advice on the right system for their home. “A rash decision could cost you dearly,” Lawrence says. “You still want to use a trusted name within the industry that uses locally sourced, quality products and installers, and offers the best advice and value for money available on the Sunshine Coast.”
Sunday’s wet weather didn’t stop more than 90 people from registering to bid at a chattel auction at Chevallum Wholesale Nursery, which is closing its doors next month after 22 years in business. Steve Perry from RE/MAX Property Sales oversaw the sale of the property and was on hand to help out with fellow agent Bridget Kraft. He says, although it started raining and stopped again half a dozen times during the auction, buyers still showed plenty of enthusiasm on the day. “I got there around 10am and people were already lined up – there were cars up and down Dales Road,” Perry says. Gordon Macdonald from Jason Andrew Auctioneers conducted the auction and the majority of plants and chattels were sold. “Gordon did a fantastic job over five hours, and the owners are very appreciative of his efforts,” Perry says. “On a day when the weather wasn’t fantastic, we still got a great result.”

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 Rams make great leaders, but you can be bossy and come on too strong. This weekend, try to assert yourself in a positive manner that doesn’t offend others or scare them away.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Resist the urge to get drawn into dramatic Pluto power plays with others, both at home and at work. When it comes to dealing with a depressed loved one, trust your intuition.
LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Saturday’s tricky sun/Pluto opposition will fire up your temper and increase your compulsion to be top cat. Pick your battles carefully, lions, otherwise there’ll be tears before bedtime.
VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Mercury/Jupiter aspects encourage you to help others. Be inspired by birthday great Princess Diana: “Everyone has the potential to give something back.”
LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 The moon favours focusing on relationships and projects within your local community, but don’t spread yourself too thinly. If you try to do too much, you’ll be no good to anyone.
SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Your obsessive side goes into overdrive on Saturday, as Pluto increases your need to control everything and everyone around you. But some people will resist your efforts – at every turn.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 The secret to a successful weekend is to control your energy, and channel it into productive pursuits. Otherwise you’ll upset others with your boisterous behaviour and chatter.
CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Attention Capricorns: don’t let your urge to control others get out of control on Saturday. Compromise and a cool head will get you a lot further than demands and ultimatums.
AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Your rebellious side is keen to rock a few boats and ruffle a few feathers on Saturday. Sunday is the day to spice up your social circle with a bohemian new crowd.
PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Fish are real do-gooders but if you try to help others you could end up in hot water. Don’t be too eager to fix loved ones’ problems – sometimes they need to do that on their own.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Stop obsessing about your financial situation and instead do some research and get professional advice if needed. It’s not a good time to go on a shopping spree or lend money.
TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Show your caring side, especially with loved ones. It’s time to make intense connections with others, and get to the bottom of relationship problems. But avoid being too stubborn.
