t’s unusual for a magazine to run a cover story about itself. But we live in unusual times, at least in the publishing industry. When Rupert Murdoch can see the end of newspapers as we know them, you know that change is inevitable. It’s an uncertain time to be a journalist. Our traditional jobs are being slashed as readers consume news in ways that didn’t even exist when I started in the business. But while my colleagues in Sydney and Melbourne enter their workplaces every day wondering if this is the day they’ll be handed a scary white envelope, the editorial team at our little independent publishing group is feeling pretty good. You see, it’s not that readers no longer want to read the news – in fact, the appetite for information is more voracious than it’s ever been. It’s just they don’t want to pay for it. And when you work for a publication that is sans cover price,

you feel like the ground you’re treading on is a little more solid. At the moment the news makers are the newsworthy, so at the risk of being called narcissistic we’ve turned the spotlight on ourselves in this week’s cover story. You’ll find that over on page 6. In agenda on page 20, we take a look at the media landscape as a whole. With these two stories we are merely touching the tip of the iceberg on this issue, but it’ll give you a rough idea of what’s going on out there. Oh and did I mention that this is our 200th issue? Phew, we made it. We’ve done a bit of reminiscing in the office this week, remembering our first issue, and it’s incredible to think we’ve made it this far. We have seen a lot of change in that time – on the Coast, in our office and in the publishing industry – but change is a good thing. I wonder what the next 200 issues will hold?

THE STORY

OF US PREVIEW As media giants fall from grace and daily newspapers struggle to survive in a changing world, My Weekly Preview is mixing an innovative editorial approach with a community sensibility to reinvent the face of print media on the Sunshine Coast.

ive years ago the global media landscape looked quite different to how it appears today. Giants Fairfax and News Limited reported on the news; now they are the news. In contrast to today, five years ago most Sunshine Coasters didn’t give much thought to the people and companies that produced their newspapers. But a group of local real estate agents did. In 2007 the regional media consisted of a powerful duopoly that made lots of money from Sunshine Coast advertisers, particularly those vendors who were selling their homes. Property marketing is an important aspect of the real estate sale process, but many local agents thought the Coast’s daily newspapers (owned by multinational publishing giants) were overcharging the region’s vendors, and they were sick of it. That is how a group of 30-odd real estate agent principals and four local publishers – Anar Higgins, Darryl Olson, Michael Kramer and Noel Olson – came together to create an alternative. The result, My Property Preview, was launched in August 2008. The joint venture, a 100 per cent locally owned magazine, was created from a desire to take ownership of real estate advertising and return it to the community. It was immediately embraced. Clutching the first edition at the MPP launch event, real estate doyenne and former Real Estate Institute of Queensland zone chair Jean Hamer praised the efforts of the MPP team. Hamer, an agent with 45 years’ experience, announced she was pleased to offer an alternative to her vendors who were being charged $4000 a page to advertise in the local daily newspaper. MPP, with a distribution double that of the daily paper, was charging approximately half that rate. It was a huge win for vendors and tremendously satisfying for the agents. “To see the first magazine roll off the presses was very exciting and empowering,” says Kramer. “There was a buzz at the launch, and it demonstrates the power of the community to come together to create their own vehicle for advertising.” Not just a vehicle for advertising, MPP’s aim was to educate readers on all things property on the Coast and beyond. My Property Preview heralded a new direction in publishing, and not just on the Coast. While magazine and newspaper publishers around the world are facing up to the reality that their business models of old will not be viable for long, years ago MPP’s publishers recognised a need to do things differently in the

magazine planning process. The MPP business model is unique – the owners are not media mogul billionaires, faceless shareholders or mining magnates, but local businesspeople. With 62,500 copies a week, the magazine boasts the largest single distribution of any publication on the Coast. That’s more than double the region’s Saturday paper and – counter to traditional publishing wisdom – it’s free, ensuring

longevity in a marketplace that daily newspapers with a cover price are finding increasingly difficult to compete in. Days after its launch, My Property Preview’s competitors reacted aggressively – the region’s daily newspaper significantly reduced its advertising rate to compete with the small publishing company. Four years later, prices are still low, and vendors have saved on M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

advertising in all Coast publications. “Our conservative calculations show we’ve helped save Sunshine Coast vendors more than $40 million in ad costs in less than four years,” says Darryl Olson.

a little over three years since it launched, the publishers decided it was time to investigate taking the magazine in a new direction to keep pace with the changing media landscape. Local businesses not involved in My Property Prope Preview were asking if tthey could advertise,, rea reader feedback indicated the there was a lack of quality y sto stories on issues that matt mattered tere to locals, and the MPP tea team started planning a n new style of magazi magazine. ine. But it wasn’t wa as simple as modell modelling ling other successfull pu publications – successfu magazine the the type o of m aimed team aim med to create didn’t exist really ex xist anywhere else. team The te am wanted to include general news stories, storie es, ffeatures, news reviews, motoring and life lifestyle, as well as the strong property section MPP had always been pro ope known kn now for. But the emphasis would always be aalw on empowering, educating and eentertaining locals. A prototype was developed and after feedback from business and readers, it was evident this type of publication would also be embraced. wo w A launch lau unch date was set for early May 2012, planning process was well underway and the pl lann surprise when a su urpr announcement meant a change News Limited, the nation’s largest of plans. N New conglomerate, owned the Weekender media con nglo magazine and three weekly newspapers on the March 2012, in a move that shocked Coast. In Ma staff and tthe industry, News Limited shut down publications, leaving itself with no those fourr pu the Coast. Staff were left without interest in n th readers without their weekly fix of local j bs, reade jobs, advertisers without anywhere to news, and ad spruik their goods and services. My Property Preview quickly employed several News Limited staff and relaunched as My Weekly Preview a week later, six weeks earlier than planned. The MWP model was all about broadening readership for advertisers and

filling a gap for readers. This gap already existed, but was widened when News Limited pulled out of the Coast. The philosophy of MWP was simple: to produce a magazine that helps make the Sunshine Coast a better place. To write about local stories and cover global issues that matter to locals. With access to some of the world’s best reporting from the AAP news service, plus the dedicated editorial team, that is the aim every week. To the publishers’ knowledge, nowhere else in the nation can a reader find this mix of local, national and world news that sits alongside locally sourced motoring, lifestyle and property stories. The editorial ethos remains – inform and educate without resorting to the type of sensationalist news some newspapers push onto readers, many of whom have had enough. It’s a goal that is achieved week in, week out, by a relatively small, dedicated team. Darryl Olson says, “We have a loyal group of enthusiastic professionals who produce the magazine. Clients are often surprised to walk into the office and see we aren’t a huge corporation.” He adds, “The amazing support of our 425 distribution outlets – which help get the magazine to the readers each week – contributes to our success. And without our loyal customer support, the magazine would not be what it is today.” Change is inevitable in the media industry, and the publishers say the magazine is not only ready for it, but welcomes it. Paid daily newspapers may be a thing of the past. Readers are demanding free, well-sourced, quality content, whether it comes online or on the driveway. And MWP advertisers are well-placed. Anar Higgins says, “Local businesspeople who have clung on to the same routine for marketing their businesses that has served them reasonably well for the last 20 years are now finding themselves wonderfully equipped for a world that no longer exists. Those who are not adapting to the new reality are being left behind.” For more on the media landscape, head to agenda on page 20.

We have a loyal group of enthusiastic professionals who produce the magazine

Vendors pay less for ads and readers are offered a high-quality publication with editorial standards that uphold a high level of integrity. Noel Olson adds, “The publication’s ethos is to produce a product that is not about profits at any cost. Our goal is to offer those who are selling their homes the lowest possible cost in the highest possible quality with the widest possible distribution.” While My Property Preview was a win for vendors, readers and agents, in October 2011, MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. NOOSA VOTE IMMINENT WORDS Nathan Evans

N

oosa de-amalgamation campaign group chief Bob Ansett says he’s confident Noosa will vote overwhelmingly in favour of splitting from the Sunshine Coast Council if given the chance. Local government minister David Crisafulli this week confirmed former Mackay mayor Colin Meng has been appointed boundary commissioner to

investigate the possibility of Queensland communities wanting to go it alone. Regions wishing to split must make a strong case, detail potential costs, accept all costs and provide a petition signed by at least 20 per cent of voters before their cases will be considered. Ansett, who is spokesman for Friends of Noosa and Noosa

Your first meeting is at our expense. Arrange an appointment today.

Independence Alliance, says homes across Noosa will soon receive postcards in the mail, to sign and mail to the minister as a show of support. “The referendum will require a 51 per cent majority… and we’d be really disappointed if that’s all we got, we’d hope to get a much greater response,” he says. Noosa residents strongly rejected forced amalgamation in 2007. Crisafulli says the de-amalgamation process won’t be easy but communities deserve the right to put forward a case. Ansett rejects claims elitism is driving Noosa’s push to restore its former council, citing a critical desire to preserve Noosa’s development and conservation philosophies, support Noosa’s biosphere classification and preserve Noosa’s tourism offering. The NIA last year commissioned former Noosa Council chief and local government consultant Brett de Chastel to cost a potential split, the report claiming the full cost could be absorbed entirely by Noosa ratepayers while ensuring rates stayed at CPI or lower for years to come.

QUANDA LAKE APPROVAL Sunshine Coast Council has approved an application for a material change of use to establish an international-level water ski park at Quanda Lake, Coolum Beach. The site of the proposed development is an old sand quarry. NAIDOC AT COTTON TREE Cotton Tree Park will come alive with NAIDOC Week celebrations on Sunday, July 8 from 9.30am. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The day will feature free rides, food and activities and performances. The even better news about Uni-Industries Several months ago I wrote about how satisfied I was with the installation of my rooftop solar system by the Uni-Industries team. It was all good news - a painless, smooth operation with no mess and no fuss. I was, at the time, anticipating a reduction in my next electricity bill but I was not expecting a huge decrease in the cost, as we had experienced almost three months of depressingly wet and grey weather.

15.indd 1

Imagine my surprise then, when I received my first electricity account and read the magic words: ‘no payment required’. This was definitely the sweetest bill I had ever opened! Not only was I not required to make any payment but I also had a substantial credit. My solar system is well on the way to paying for itself, and fortunately I had ensured that the installation occurred while the Queensland State Government is still

offering a great solar bonus feed-in tariff. It is a very generous scheme and is still running, but for how long? Are you still mulling over the idea of going solar? If so, pick up the phone now and call Uni-Industries - the experts in solar PV panel installation.

he Sunshine Coast now has an international airport, with flights between Maroochydore and Auckland. The first flight from New Zealand touched down at the Mudjimba airport on Sunday, the culmination of two years’ work and a partnership between Sunshine Coast Airport, Sunshine Coast Destination Limited, Auckland Airport and Air New Zealand. “We now have a new message to send to the nation and the world – that we are open for international business,” says Coast mayor Mark Jamieson. Air New Zealand’s general manager Australia, Cam Wallace, travelled on the inaugural service, which is part of the trans-Tasman alliance between Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia. “For Kiwis, it’s a quick hop across the Tasman to land virtually

on the beach and cut out the commute from other airports. For the Sunshine Coast, it opens the opportunity of a long weekend in New Zealand, or for those wanting to head further away, the service will connect seamlessly with North America and from there to the rest of the world,” he says. Sunshine Coast Destination Limited CEO Steve Cooper applauded the new flight service. “The Sunshine Coast is, in one fell swoop, elevated from a regional economy to a serious player on the national and world stages,” he says.

The Caloundra Music Festival has been given a huge vote of confidence, this week securing a $30,000 grant from Events Queensland during the DestinationQ Forum in Cairns. Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says the grant will fund the marketing of tailored festival/flight/accommodation package deals to an audience in Victoria, which this year will enjoy its school holiday fortnight during Caloundra’s inaugural Fringe Festival and Music Festival period, along with Queensland and NSW. “The State Government is keen to boost tourism incentives for Queensland during these difficult times and this grant is perfectly targeted to the southern market,” he says. The festival is being held in the middle of the school break, from Friday, September 28 to Sunday, September 30. The Fringe Festival kicks off with a street parade on the evening of Friday, September 21.

PEREGIAN FIGHTS FUN POLICE Organisers of Peregian Originals have called on councillors to experience the event for themselves, before making a decision on the music concert event’s fate. The fortnightly event has been under fire following complaints about noise and other issues from a small group of residents. Sunshine Coast Council staff recommended halving the event’s permit to allow just one concert per month in the park behind the surf club, but the event won a reprieve last week, with councillors allowing it to continue fortnightly ahead of a further review in September. Spokeswoman for East Coast Originals, which runs the concerts, Anita Sweeney is confident the council will realise the event’s value. “I think overall this will leave us in a promising position. It gives us time to address things with council directly and have those councillors able to ask questions and gain a picture of how it works,” she says. Patrons and Peregian business owners wrote letters of support and packed the council gallery last week following a fierce Facebook campaign

Confident: Anita Sweeney and a petition of businesses supporting the event as a valuable economic, community and tourism contributor for Peregian. Sweeney says the event also provides young musicians a place to hone their craft. “These are young kids who are starting to write songs and want to share original music with a warm and generous audience – this is great for them. It gives them a chance to perform and meet more experienced performers, it’s good mentoring for them,” Sweeney says. Peregian Originals has faced ongoing scrutiny from a small group of residents complaining about the music and crowds at the event, twice a month.

BRISBANE DRIVERS SLUGGED

The son of an invalid pensioner murdered in his Adelaide home in 2002 has made an emotional plea for help in finding the killer. The body of Steven George Armstrong was found in the unit in Adelaide’s west by his landlord on December 23, 2002. There is a $200,000 reward for information leading to a conviction, and police said at the time Armstrong appeared to have died of multiple stab wounds and to have been dead for several weeks. His son, John Armstrong, told reporters this week that the family had suffered for 10 years and hoped that someone would come forward and tell them what happened. “Some heartless coward or

The RACQ’s annual audit of capital city off-street parking costs canvassed all Australian CBDs. Brisbane motorists are now paying almost four times what they did in 2001, it says. RACQ spokesman Michael Roth says average weekday Brisbane CBD parking rates increased 28.7 per cent over the past year. Short-term visitors to Brisbane city are hardest hit, with one hour

Low-cost carrier Tiger Airways says it has won back the confidence of authorities and the flying public a year after it was grounded for safety breaches. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) grounded Tiger’s Australian fleet of 10 Airbus A320s on July 2, 2011, saying it believed permitting the airline to continue flying posed a serious and imminent risk to air safety. Speaking to AAP ahead of a press conference to announce the beginning of services out of its new Sydney base, CEO Andrew David said the public and the regulator had shown they were back on board. Energy Minister Mark McArdle says letters will be sent to government departments telling them to switch providers. “We are very serious about this,” he told ABC Radio. “Make no mistake, this government is very firm in its resolution to deliver cost-of-living decreases to the people of this state and will take the action we need to show our resolve.” The action comes

ourteen women who survived the horrors of World War II have paraded in an unusual pageant, vying for the honour of being crowned Israel’s first Miss Holocaust Survivor. Billed by organisers as a celebration of life, the event also stirred controversy. Many argued that judging ageing women who had suffered so much on physical appearance was inappropriate, and even offensive.

“It sounds totally macabre to me,” says Colette Avital, from Israel’s leading Holocaust survivors’ umbrella group. Pageant organiser Shimon Sabag says the winners were chosen based on their personal stories of survival and rebuilding their lives after the war, and physical beauty was only a tiny part of the competition. “They feel good together. They are having a good time and laughing in the rehearsals,” says Sabag, director of Yad Ezer L’Haver, or Helping Hand, which assists needy Holocaust survivors and organised the pageant. “The fact that so many wanted to participate proves that it’s a good idea.” Nearly 300 women from across Israel registered for the competition. Prince Charles got a bit more costly for British taxpayers in the past year, according to palace figures released Friday. The prince’s annual accounts reveal that Charles received almost £2.2 million ($3.42 million) from government departments and grants in the year to March 31, a rise of 11 per cent from the year before. The figures show the heir to the throne’s income and expenditures both rose – although the cost of his son William’s royal wedding remains undisclosed. The prince receives the bulk of his income from properties and investments of the Duchy of Cornwall – the 55,000-hectare estate established in the 14th century to provide income for the heir to the throne. Income from the duchy rose three per cent to £18.3 million and the prince paid almost £4.5 million in tax, up slightly on the year before. The prince spent just over £12 million carrying out official royal duties, up from £11.4 million. The 63-year-old prince and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, travelled almost 77,000 kilometres on official business, at a cost of £1.3 million. AP

prefer and still follow what’s said. Soft sounds are heard clearly. You’ll hear the whisper of a child’s voice. And the sound of footsteps from a distance. Loud noises are decreased. So your hearing sounds as natural as possible. People will find it easier to talk to you. You’ll understand what they say. And you’ll respond correctly. Attending large gatherings will be enjoyable again. You’ll no longer be distracted by low level background noises. And you’ll have more energy to understand, as listening will require less effort. In summary, the technology helps you stay connected to the world around you. This patented technology is available at Acoustic Hearing Clinics. Acoustic Hearing Clinics was established on the coast in 1997. All clinics are family owned and operate with traditional values. Their staff believe in treating you well. They also believe that getting to know you is the best way to respond to your hearing needs. People who have switched from large, multinational or chain clinics say they now get

BREAKING

NEWS PREVIEW With consumers increasingly choosing to read their news on digital devices, daily newspapers are steadily being voted off the island. Not so with glossy publications, which we still love to flick through as we relax on the couch with a cuppa. WORDS Jarna Baudinette

T

wenty years ago, if you wanted to know what was happening in the world you walked down to the corner store, picked up a newspaper and handed the nice lady behind the counter 60 cents. While a handful of radio and television stations broadcast short hourly or daily news bulletins, the majority of our local, state, national and even world news came from the humble paper, and reading a newspaper was still a staple of most people’s day. Today, the newspaper is more likely to be in the news than it is to be in your hands. Over the past five years, daily newspapers across the developed world have been struggling with freefalling circulation figures and decreasing revenue streams, as more and more readers move to consuming their news online – for free. In 2007-2009 paid daily circulation of newspapers in the United States declined by 30 per cent, and in the United Kingdom it dropped by 25 per cent – which is the same decline reported by our own local newspaper, the Sunshine Coast Daily, over the past six years. In the past few weeks alone there has been a major shake-up of Australia’s print news sector, as our two biggest daily newspaper producers, Fairfax Media and News Limited, announced radical plans to overhaul their business models for a digital age. On June 18, Fairfax chief executive Greg Hywood announced the biggest restructure in the company’s 170-year history, involving 1900 job cuts over the next three to four years. “Readers’ behaviours have changed and will not change back,” he said. “As a result, we are taking decisive actions to fundamentally change the way we do business.” The announcement dominated headlines until rival News Limited made a similar one, beginning a restructure process that has already cost more than 100 jobs. So just what has happened to the newspaper? One argument is printed dailies have lost their immediacy, given that smartphones and tablets allow us to access news

[ 20 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J ULY 6, 2012

wherever we are, and 24-hour news channels mean we can watch the latest headlines at 5am, before our day even officially begins. While people are still consuming media, they are doing so in vastly different ways – and big publishers are struggling to get readers to part with cash when they can easily find a comparable product online for free. This shift is part of what’s known as ‘media fragmentation’. As consumers we’re now spoilt for choice. For example, the average Sunshine Coast resident now has access to 16 free-to-air television channels, compared with five in 1992. Newspapers must compete to capture our attention and are increasingly failing to do so, as evidenced by the widespread drop in circulation figures. However, while our media choice has grown at an exponential rate, advertising budgets have not. Classified advertising – or ‘rivers of gold’, as they were once known in the newspaper business – quickly shifted online, creating a massive revenue hole; with circulation and readership figures continuing to decline, many long-term advertisers are seeing less value in paid daily newspapers. However, one of the key struggles facing news companies as they attempt to transition to the online market is how to effectively monetise their web presence in order to regain this lost revenue. Fairfax and News Limited currently operate free news sites to supplement their daily papers, and both plan to introduce paywall systems in future. However, Dr Daniel Schlagwein, lecturer at the Australian School of Business and co-author of a new report on the impact of digital technology

In the digital world, that dollar becomes about 18 cents,” Williams said. “So you need lots and lots of 18 cents, lots of piles of them in order to get back to that dollar.” Interestingly, despite the bleak outlook for daily newspapers Fairfax has recently chosen to expand its print news division in one key product. THE BRIGHT SIDE OF DERIVATIVES

Mark Davi dson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

D

erivatives. A dirty word for some people. The cause of the GFC perhaps? Let me educate you, because it is lack of knowledge that causes fear and misunderstanding, not the instrument itself. Derivatives did not cause the GFC, much like an axe does not cause a murder, but the wielder of the axe that does the killing. An axe has a useful purpose too, as do derivatives. Consider some of these ways to use them to your advantage. You may have heard the term ‘portfolio insurance’, and similar to people wanting to protect the value of their house against calamities, it

is possible to protect the value of your portfolio against market falls. Just like house insurance, you pay a premium to insure your portfolio, the cost of which depends on a number of factors. These factors include the time frame being covered by the insurance, the excess (in other words, how much of the loss you’re willing to bear yourself) and current perceived risk of loss (interpreted via market volatility). This is all priced into one instrument called a ‘put option’ and an experienced adviser should be able to assist with how much insurance to take out and how much it will cost. The other common use of derivatives is to create extra income from your portfolio. The aim is to sell shares in the future at a higher price than the current market. Let’s say you own 1000 BHP, and BHP is trading at $32. You only want to sell it if it is over

ROLLER BLINDS PANEL GLIDES ROMAN BLINDS

30

$34 at the end of September, so you sell 10 BHP September 2012 $34 call options for $0.55 per contract or $500 in total. If BHP closes above $34 on September 27, you have agreed to sell them at the $34 contract price plus the $0.50 you received for the options. This equates to an additional return of five to six per cent over and above dividends and capital growth, not to be sneezed at in this environment. The strategies above are known as ‘put protection’ and the ‘covered call’. The logistics are, by nature, technical, but the ideas behind them are quite simple and all driven by your desired outcome. We always recommend anyone considering these strategies consult an experienced adviser. SUPPORT FOR CARBON TAX BUILD YOUR OWN PROFITS This simple and systemised business imports materials from overseas and assembles them in the factory on the Sunshine Coast before delivering to their customers around Australia. The process is fast, efficient and requires only 2 staff working alongside the business owner. With a diverse customer base developed over the past 3 years of operation, the business now boasts annual sales in excess of $1,000,000. No industry experience or skill required, just a genuine desire to work hard and grow the business to its potential.

AAP

Almost 300 businesses including Westpac, AGL, Unilever and GE have signed a joint statement backing a price on carbon. The $23 per tonne price on carbon emissions started on Sunday, impacting directly on 294 electricity generators and other companies. The Federal Government is aiming to cut carbon emissions by five per cent by 2020, with the carbon tax shifting to an emissions trading scheme in 2015. The Businesses for Clean Energy consortium members say a carbon price will underpin the move to a clean economy. Consortium spokesman Nathan Fabian says there is strong support in the business community for the tax, but the coalition’s commitment to abolish it is creating uncertainty. “Businesses have accepted there will have to be some sort of price constraint on carbon,” Fabian says. “It’s true there is uncertainty and that does make the job more difficult and makes the next couple of years

a challenging time to do business. “We think it’s important to the competitiveness and business opportunities available for the Australian economy and Australian companies.” Fabian says there is some confusion about who will pay the carbon tax and what the price effects will be, but that will wane. “Over the next few months people will be less confused about that,” he says. Fabian says there is a clear global trend towards carbon pricing. “Australia has got the timing about right.” AAP

FASHION TIPS FOR THE BOYS

• Skinny jeans are in for men and women but if you are a slim bloke, beware – skinny jeans can make you look a little on the malnourished side. • Having said that, most men wear clothes that are too baggy. Buy well-fitting clothes – that means pieces that almost hug your body without clinging. • Avoid T-shirts with logos. No one should be a walking billboard. • If you do nothing else, invest in good shoes. Often overlooked, a good shoe tells the world you are a man with style.

HUMBLE HEROES

W

hile there is often a lot of excitement over snazzy superfoods, often we overlook the ‘super-ness’ of our everyday foods. You know – the plain, boring ones available seasonally at the farmers’ markets or (cringe) supermarket. In my world, no vegetable, fruit, herb or spice is plain and boring. They are objects of deliciousness. Simple silverbeet sauteed in coconut oil and garlic; balsamic, oven-roasted Lebanese eggplants and pumpkin; steamed zucchini and broccoli; chopped, shredded and diced crunchy, crispy raw salads. Yum!

[ 26 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J ULY 6, 2012

26.indd 1

But beyond their yum-appeal, there is much more about these beauties that just might help us sail through the winter cold and flu season much more smoothly. So what are the top humble heroes that will save your (winter) day? If we take clues from nature, the fruit, vegies and herbs that are in plentiful supply at this time of the year, are the ones that will best support a thriving immune system. First, load up on vitamin C – no, not the bottled type. While supplements may be appealing and seem an easy way to get all the nutrients you need, it is important to remember how clever mother nature is. In order for nutrients to be absorbed efficiently they need other helpers, that funnily enough, are found naturally in the whole food versions of our desired nutrient. To load up on vitamin C, pile your basket with silverbeet, broccoli, oranges, strawberries, lemons and even potato. All of these foods boast impressive quantities of immune-boosting vitamin C, plus your complexion will thank you and you may find an improvement in cholesterol levels. To add to this, these six foods will help to counter the damaging effects of stress, as vitamin

C is concentrated in the adrenal glands. And to concentrate the effects of these wonders, add garlic and ginger. Garlic is an incredible immunity friend – as well as being very high in Vitamin C, it is also boasts powerful antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. It is an absolute powerhouse and its legendary antibacterial effects have been closely studied and put to use in cases where antibiotic resistant bacteria are wreaking havoc. The minute I feel a ‘lurgy’ coming on I get out the garlic in volumes – a little trick of mine is to roast a whole bulb and eat it. Works every time. Best of all, it makes everything taste better. Ginger is another reliable health ally at this time of year. Have you tried ginger in a fresh juice? Try orange, ginger, pineapple, spinach and celery for a super immune boost. Ginger’s aromatic, pungent and spicy zest adds just the right kick and depth to an otherwise plain and boring sauce-laden stir fry. In my kitchen, I opt for minimum packaged products and look to mother nature to add flavour, using citrus juices, herbs, spices and organic oils. Superfoods? No thanks! I’m good with my little old humble heroes.

TOASTING NEW ZEALAND WINES

I

t took six months to sell 5000 tickets to the first Toast Martinborough wine and food festival in 1992. Organisers must have wondered what on earth they were letting themselves in for. Twenty years later it takes five minutes to sell just over 10,000 tickets to the New Zealand festival. Martinborough is a quirky town. There’s so little traffic in this community of 1300 souls you could fire a canon down most of these streets and not hit a thing. But it has become a premier wine-growing region with upmarket eateries, attracting tourists and Wellingtonians seeking a weekend away. Once a year, usually on a sunny late spring Sunday in mid-November, the sleepy town goes ballistic. The square becomes the scene of wine barrel rolling races, live music, wine stalls and a peak hour traffic flow of buses ferrying thousands of festivalgoers to the circuit of 11 vineyards set up with wine and food tents and live music. Many people dress up for the day and everyone

wears the most important accessory of all – a wine glass lanyard, which is their ticket into the festival. Martinborough produces award-winning cool climate wines, of which 70 per cent are exported. While sunny, the region is prey to southerly gales roaring up from the Antarctic, which means output is more on a boutique scale. Palliser Estate owner Richard Riddiford, one of the founders of Toast, says occasionally the festival is hit with hail, gale-force wind and frigid temperatures. “But people just toughen up and get on with it.” Palliser Estate was part of the first wave of wineries to become established, first planting in 1984 and concentrating initially on pinot noir, chardonnay, riesling and sauvignon blanc. Pinot gris has more recently been added. The food queen of Toast is chef, caterer, teacher and food writer Ruth Pretty, who runs her own foodie empire from the rural area of Te Horo, back over the hills. Toast is a frantic day for Ruth, where

Up to

30,000 portions of food are eaten, but she and husband Paul, on their feet for 12 hours straight, barely seem to work up a sweat. “After 20 years, we’re used to it. We relish this day,” she beams. Ata Rangi is owned by Clive Paton, who bought a barren five-hectare paddock on the edge of Martinborough in 1980, which now includes celebre, a sought-after blend of merlot, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. US wine guru Robert Parker recently gave Ata Rangi the top Outstanding: 5 Stars rating in his 7th Edition Wine Buyers Guide. Paton’s passion extends to native forest conservation and he produces a special pinot noir to raise funds. The tickets might not go on sale until October, but accommodation around Martinborough is sold out months in advance. The writer was a guest of Positively Wellington Tourism and Air New Zealand. AAP

$ GET DOWN AND BLUESY WITH THE JOE KINGS Perth exports The Joe Kings have been described as “one of the greatest new acts of the year”. They won the 2010 Western Australian Music Award for favourite newcomers – joining the ranks of previous winners, hugely popular group Birds of Tokyo. The Joe Kings are Jack Stirling and Phill Leggett who met by chance at a music store in Perth in 2008, with a shared passion for old-school blues igniting their conversation. From that introduction they went on to jam together, add young in-demand drummer, Ryan Brewer, who cut his chops playing with the South West Blues Club house band, and his friend, funky blues bassist, Riley Watson-Russell and The Joe Kings were formed. Today the blues greats still inspire the band’s music. They can play a trad blues gig with as much gusto as a set on a hip festival, the lines blurring between the old standards and their brand of neo blues-rock.

INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED GUITARISTS UNITE This show celebrates the skill of some of Australia’s best home-grown talents. Guitarists Anthony Garcia, Aaron Hopper, Toby Wren and Andrew Veivers combine for this one-night-only performance, celebrating flamenco, folk, jazz and classically-inspired guitar. In 2010, SOULO Guitars was premiered at the Judith Wright Centre in Brisbane and based on the success of this initial presentation the four composer/guitarists have been developing a new body of work composing

music for four guitars based on their unique field of expertise. Garcia describes SOULO Guitars as “an opportunity to showcase the colour, texture and vibrancy of the guitar” and its diverse compositional voices”. This is a seated ‘be quiet’ concert. Carlotta began her career as an original member of the long-running Les Girls cabaret show which began 1963 in Kings Cross and ran until 1992. Carlotta was the star and compere of the show, which attracted visiting celebrities such as Shirley Bassey and Liza Minnelli. Having had one of Australia’s first publicised sex changes, Carlotta was the inspiration for the movie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Doc Span and Ross Williams have been playing music together for 20 years. Renowned for their powerful down-home blues, their chemistry and friendship makes for wild performances. Highly celebrated, with many festival appearances under their belts, the duo’s debut album, The Last Train, released in 1995, received much critical acclaim.

he grand old British brand might be owned by an Indian corporation these days, but Land Rover, Range Rover (and their corporate sibling Jaguar) just seem to be getting better and better. Land Rover calls the Discovery 4 the “most capable Discovery ever”, which is a bit like talking about Shane Warne’s best-ever leg-spinner – high praise indeed. Among the innovations are two new engines, improved fuel economy, reduced emissions, updates to its benchmark all-wheel-drive system as well as a new interior. I drove the Discovery just a couple of weeks after testing the latest version of its corporate cousin, the Range Rover

Sport – and the similarities are striking. But where the Sport has a hunched-down, ready-to-pounce stance, the Discovery feels slightly more jacked-up, and far more capable of scrambling through knee-deep mud or over ruts and rocks. Setting the Disco apart, of course, is its ability to convert from spacious five-seater to full-sized seven-seater with the flick of a couple of levers in the cavernous cargo area. It’s a straightforward operation and, unlike many off-roaders, the rear-most seats don’t have a temporary feel. That’s amplified by the fact that rear-seat passengers even get their own storage spaces and sunroof, which serves to make the already spacious

cabin feel even more light and airy. It’s massively roomy, a very sophisticated thing to drive and it matches its German rivals from Benz, BMW and Audi in just about every way. Despite its imposing size, it feels surprisingly agile, changing direction with alacrity. That’s helped by those 600 Newton metres on tap from the diesel powerplant, delivered in smooth fashion by Rover’s latest six-speed automatic transmission. Switching from freeway or city mode to unleash the Disco’s legendary off-road capability is an easy task using the Terrain Control, while comfortably perched in your electrically adjusted continued over>

< from previous page leather chair, being fanned by chilled climate-control air and listening to music piped through some high-fidelity speakers. It might not match the snob factor of its upmarket brother, the Range Rover Vogue, but the Discovery continues to grow in refinement and creature comforts. And, for a vehicle weighing upwards of 2300 kilograms, it remains a reasonably city-friendly machine. My week-long test, much of which was sadly spent locked in city traffic, produced consumption figures of 12.5L/100 kilometres, quite acceptable for a large vehicle. Put it on the highway and you could expect to sip way down into single figures. Its official combined thirst is 9.3L/100 kilometres, which is downright amazing for something so boxy and bulky. It might not be a game-changer, but the Discovery 4 continues to advance what, for some years now, has been a very advanced breed. Kind of makes you anxious to see the Discovery 5, doesn’t it?

BUILDING A WINDOW OF

OPPORTUNITY PREVIEW If you’ve been putting off your building or renovation plans, hesitate no longer. Finding decent tradies at competitive prices on the Coast could soon get a lot tougher. WORDS Julie Schomberg

re you hoping to build or renovate but aren’t sure if the time is right? As some home owners and buyers delay, banking on decreasing interest rates or increasing equity in their own houses, the Sunshine Coast construction industry is preparing for unprecedented local demand just as it’s losing workers to resource towns across the state. Coast builders and industry chiefs have told MPP that this looming supply-demand imbalance, on top of new expenses such as the carbon tax, is likely to mean rising costs for home building and renovating in the next couple of years. As the industry seeks government support and does what it can to prepare for the expected large-scale residential and commercial work, it says the best value for money for individual, private jobs is now. “We’re at the start of an upward cycle,” says Craig Cleary, whose business Craig Cleary Constructions has been building custom-built homes and renos between Noosa and Bribie Island for 10 years. “We’re moving into what I’d call a sweet spot for the consumer – a nonvolatile, steady time where work is starting to pick up after being stagnant so long and the guys [tradespeople] who haven’t left are pricing competitively so they can stay here with their families. Prices won’t get any better than now, before the place goes gangbusters with the big projects the council has earmarked.” Cleary recalls a period in the mid-2000s when many local tradies went to NSW to work on storm-damaged properties and chase bigger pay

cheques. heques. “Prices went up overnightt on the Coast,” he says, citing an example of bricklaying rising 50 5 cents a brick. (An average $1.40 charge is $1 to $1. .40 a brick.) “This added d up to $5000 per home. It was a lot for absorb.” a builder to absorb b.” Eventually, costs are passed on across the board. With more than 60 subcontractors and four permanent anent staff, Cleary is delighted d to have kept the bulk ulk of his business on the Coast. “There’s a lot more quoting going on here lately,” he says. “We’ve got some large renovations in the pipeline. We’re also doing a couple of new homes for interstate clients who are moving their families to the Sunshine Coast for the lifestyle, good value for money and what they see as a fantastic future growth area.” But he worries about the impact of the resources boom. “Of the last five or so builds we’ve done, most of the husbands were working away in the mining industry,” he says. “As a nipper president and a football coach, I’ve noticed more families leaving for work, or at least the father. We’re losing carpenters, machinery guys, truck drivers, anyone who has

If we lo lose os any more, it will be very hard d to get them back and that’s w when prices will be driven up.” .” The Sunshine Su un Coast branch manager o of tthe Housing Industry Associatio Association, on, S Stuart Collins, reels off the reso resource-rich ourc towns that have taken Coas Coast workers. “Gladstone was first, then n Chinchilla Chin and Roma, now Emerald and d Rock Rockhampton and Mackay have picked up up,” p,” he sa says. “There’s been a mass exodus of tradiess over a sustained period and happening the recovery isn’t hap ppening aas fast as we’d hoped However, are coming into an on the Coast. Howev ver, we ar upswing and there’s optimism about the large projects and capital works.” infrastructure projec Collins sayss as conditions c improve, demand will outstrip supply. “There’s quite a bit of competition out there now, with builders and designers and tradies keen to secure work,” he says. “But the skills shortage will affect our capacity to build and drive up trade prices.” The HIA’s Trade Index forecasts a lack of availability in structural trades such as carpentry and bricklaying, but more so in the finishing trades such as wall and floor tiling, painting and decorating, and plastering.

Collins says strategies are needed immediately to ensure an adequate workforce for the future. “We should invest in skills and training now, look at ways to keep workers on the Coast, create jobs through upskilling or reskilling, provide more incentives to employers and employees who want to take up traineeships and apprenticeships.” He warns the situation may get so desperate

If we don’t have sufficient workers to meet upswings in demand, there are skilled workers who can be brought in from overseas to resolve these issues

that skilled migration may be a short-term solution. “If we don’t have sufficient workers to meet upswings in demand, there are skilled workers who can be brought in from overseas to resolve these issues,” Collins says. The goal is to ensure the local industry and local economy can thrive. “We want to encourage people to invest in new housing and renovate,” he says. “The market can be sensitive if costs become too inflated.” The new Sunshine Coast regional manager of Master Builders, Michael Hopkins says there’s a

sense of optimism about the direction of the new Sunshine Coast Council and new State Government, amid “signs of tentative improvement” in the housing sector. He says latest figures show a 3.8 per cent increase in new house approvals on the Coast in the April quarter this year compared to the same period in 2011, although the value of total residential building work dropped 20 per cent. “The construction industry is still doing it very tough here and many people are either travelling to find work, or in some cases, leaving the industry,” Hopkins says. However, new members have also joined lately, with the organisation now numbering more than 900 Coast builders, subcontractors, suppliers and consultants. Hopkins, a former town planner and development manager who has worked on the Coast for 15 years, agrees that now may be a window of opportunity for the average person wanting to renovate or build a home in a cost effective way. “We need to make sure we can get through the next 12- to 24-month period, keep enough local builders employed locally, until the benefits of the ‘big four’ infrastructure projects start to be realised,” he says. They are the Maroochydore principal activity centre, the Kawana hospital and health precinct, the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion and the Sippy Downs and University of the Sunshine Coast technology precinct. Hopkins says the carbon tax is another issue likely to push up prices. “Our estimate is that a carbon tax will add $3800 to the cost of building an average-sized [200-square metre] new home.”

his property has a reputation as one of the world’s most unique entertainment venues. The Tivoli, in Fortitude Valley, was built as a bakery almost a century ago, and has been converted into an art deco-inspired cabaret theatre, hosting leading Australian and international music artists. Leon Alaban from Ray White Hotels Australia says the current owners, the O’Rourke family, have decided to sell the Tivoli as a freehold going concern. “The O’Rourke family have decided to divest the Tivoli, as it forms part of a family trust, and it is therefore being sold to dissolve the trust and pay out the beneficiaries,” he says. The theatre has a mezzanine and features seating for 1500 standing or 700 seated patrons. There are

also a reception and foyer, three bars and an artists’ lounge and a kitchen. The 2160-square metre site is located in one of Brisbane’s key growth areas adjoining the $2.9 billion redevelopment of the RNA showgrounds, and Alaban says the Tivoli is acknowledged as an important entertainment venue within the area. While the future of the theatre is ultimately up to the new owner, Alaban says there have been “numerous fields of enquiry from all sorts of buyers, and the general consensus is that in its immediate future, people want the Tivoli to remain as it is, which is good for Brisbane’s entertainment scene”. The Tivoli will be auctioned on site on Wednesday, July 18 at 11am.

BIG CHANGES NEEDED IN STATE BUDGET The Property Council says it’s time to give the property sector a tax break in the upcoming budget.

T

he Property Council recently released its pre-budget submission ahead of the State Government’s September budget, and it’s a complete review of the tax system that is at the top of the council’s recommendation list. In a Property Council release from two weeks ago, the organisation said, “For too long, revenue has been generated from a narrow tax base, with the property sector carrying more than our fair share of the burden. To strengthen the state’s fiscal position, the tax base must be broadened, and the limited funds available invested in areas that will provide the highest returns.”

For too long, revenue has been generated from a narrow tax base, with the property sector carrying more than our fair share of the burden

The Property Council identified five areas that the 2012-2013 State budget should be focused on. These included community building, more efficient taxation, strengthening cities and regions, greening the built environment and fixing planning.

“Government investment in streamlining our planning and development assessment processes will make us more competitive with other states and encourage the return of private sector planning in Queensland,” the Property Council statement said. “Delivery of major projects, critical infrastructure and affordable housing are central tenets of the Property Council’s submission, which focuses on investment for the future of our state.” The nature of commercial premises make these investments potentially even more susceptible to the issues facing the property industry, but investment in commercial premises is a vital component of a region’s economic future. “Government investment in the property industry will strengthen our economy and provide the jobs, wages, housing and infrastructure our communities need to support and maintain our state’s enviable lifestyle,” said the Property Council.

WHAT THE BUDGET WILL DELIVER Over the past few years MPP has been following our region’s big infrastructure plans, and with all the excitement surrounding the Kawana health hub and the Maroochydore principal activity centre, hinterland residents living a scenic drive from the activity may have been feeling a little left out. But Division five councillor Jenny McKay says the new Sunshine Coast Council budget has plenty in store for the hinterland. MPP asked her for an update on the developments local residents can expect to see in the future.

Our beautiful, much-loved community parks and gardens will not be forgotten with funding allocated for revamps

local community parks and gardens will not be forgotten with funding allocated for revamps to be rolled out throughout the next 12 months. Keeping residents moving safely, comfortably and efficiently whether on the roads, pathways, bikeways or via public transport is always a major priority for this region. Local residents and commuters will appreciate the bridge upgrades planned for both Browns Road Bridge and Perry Road along Kidaman Creek. And in Conondale, bridge refurbishment is pencilled for Daltons Bridge and road construction works will be undertaken along Beausangs Lane. Main Street in Montville will also be

revitalised with streetscaping works to be funded this financial year. Local pathways for my local division also have funding allocated to create more ways to connect our communities via healthy lifestyle options. And for those wishing to use an alternative method of staying fit and healthy, you will enjoy the funding going towards improvements at the Palmwoods Aquatic Centre. The Maleny Community Precinct development will continue to come to fruition over the next 12 months with funding allocated to implement the next stages. This is just a sample of the $604 million budget for 2012/13.”

his 2012/13 budget is very much a budget of the times. The budget is aimed at keeping the rate rise at the lower end for Queensland councils while still maintaining infrastructure and services on the Coast. This budget will deliver for the community, the environment and the economy, by helping to build a sustainable region. Hinterland residents can look forward to some wonderful improvements and upgrades to our major parks and reserves, including the implementation of stage four Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve works and various enhancements to our scenic Botanical Gardens and the Arts and Ecology Centre, Tanawha. CANCER June 22-July 23 It’s the perfect weekend to set ambitious goals and dream big for the future. The moon’s visiting your adventure zone so try to enjoy some time in the great outdoors.

LEO July 24-Aug 23 Don’t assume you know what others are thinking and feeling this weekend – you may be way off the mark. You’re in the mood to express yourself in creative or spiritual ways.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 There’s no escaping financial pressures at the moment Virgo. Others may encourage you to take risks with your cash, but a cautious and conservative approach is the safest way to go.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 You’re searching for stability but that’s the last thing you’ll get from loved ones at the moment. Socialising with work colleagues will be surprisingly satisfying this weekend.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Children and teenagers will blur the boundaries this weekend. If you are firm and flexible – a tricky balance – then you can guide them through the changes that are happening.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Make sure you use your energy productively, otherwise it will turn inward and stir you up. Put aside time for yourself this weekend so you can calm down, contemplate – and relax.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 It’s a fabulous weekend to communicate with loved ones in creative and inventive new ways. Conversing about a wide range of topics will increase your curiosity and knowledge base.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Your ruling planet Uranus is impatient for change but don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. Steady Saturn is urging you to set practical and realistic goals for the future.

PISCES Feb 20-March 20 Saturday is perfect for personal projects and quiet contemplation. Sunday favours socialising with family and friends as you communicate and circulate; mix and mingle.

ARIES March 21-April 20 Attached Aries – is there a tug-of-war between you and your partner? Do you want more freedom, while they yearn for more commitment? The only solution is to meet them half-way.
