s our editor Jemma heads off on a well-earned break this week, we take a look at the people heading into town – those who’ve chosen to make the Coast their permanent home. The latest census data shows that just under a quarter of us here on the Coast were born overseas, and while our region has long been a drawcard for people seeking a change of pace, many of the immigrants who’ve decided to call Australia – and specifically the Sunshine Coast – home, bring with them much more than just a love for our sand and sea. Many have left difficult circumstances, oppressive political climates and other challenges to come here, and so they bring with them a passion and enthusiasm for our region, a desire to be part of our culture, and valuable contributions to our society. Meet some of our recent citizens, Mohammad of
Caloundra, Nisa of Noosa and her son Boston in our cover story this week. On a sadder note, the tragic death of Sydney teenager Thomas Kelly in an unprovoked attack on Sydney streets last week is hard to stomach. Just 18 and with so much to live for, his life was cut short with a single punch. On page 22, Jarna Baudinette takes a look at the One Punch Can Kill awareness campaign and its potentially life-saving message. Finally, congratulations to the finalists in this year’s Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards. These are some of our most successful businesspeople, and their efforts help put the Coast on the national and international map while helping contribute to our economy. See the finalists on page 24. From the MWP team, have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

We speak English fluently. We were taught it as a second language from when I was five years old. It was the legacy of British rule.
A FRESH
START PREVIEW The Sunshine Coast may seem relatively homogenous on the surface. But do a little digging and you’ll find many Coast residents have moved here from overseas, and have much to contribute to our local community. WORDS Nathan Evans IMAGES Ben Vos

ust under a quarter of the Coast’s population was born overseas, based on 2011 census data, with England, New Zealand, South Africa, Germany and Scotland the most common countries of birth. England topped the list with 20,249 people – 6.6 per cent of the Coast’s population – listing it as their place of birth. Overall, the number of overseas-born residents rose from just under 20 per cent of the Coast’s population at the 2006 census, to 24.7 per cent in 2011. That’s slightly behind Brisbane at 29.7 per cent, multicultural Sydney’s 40.1 per cent – up from 34.4 per cent in 2006 – and also Melbourne, where 36.7 per cent of the population was born outside of Australia. Newcomers’ reasons for choosing our shores over others are varied – from a desire for a warmer climate,
escape from political strife and even warfare in the more extreme cases – and so too, are the many contributions they make to our community. Mohammad Khan grew up in Pakistan. He remembers his homeland as a place of oppression and military rule, at the time he left. It’s a world away from the life he enjoys today at home on the Coast, where he works as an emergency department doctor at Nambour and Caloundra hospitals. “With the military control it was not typical to say, openly, the things you wanted to say, as there was a lot of pressure from above,” Khan says. “It was forbidden to speak certain things, so people were scared to say what that they wanted to, or felt they needed to. “Even though the military rule has passed, and the system has improved, there are other elements which

work against the place generally. Things were not always done as they should be.” Khan sought a better way of life for his young family, but it was his skills and career aspirations that ultimately inspired his move to Australia. As an emergency doctor, this new Australian’s contribution can mean the difference between life and death. “I felt there were more professional opportunities in Australia, opportunities that I would not have had in Pakistan,” says Khan. “When I came here, there was a shortage [of doctors]. In the past three or four years in Australia the numbers have increased, but we will come to a point where we’ll need another three to four times the current number. “I had always been fascinated by Australia when I was small. We used to play cricket and teams from there used to come to Australia. We would see the matches on TV and so I thought I’d go and see Australia for myself. “I read a lot while I was there in Pakistan and I learned that Australia was very separated from the rest of the world and had been for a long time. It was a different kind of world. “We speak English fluently. We were taught it as a second language from when I was five years old. It was the legacy of British rule. In the schools we all read English, books were printed in English, that has been a big benefit.” Khan arrived on the Coast in the mid-2000s, and at that time was among 0.1 per cent of overseas-born residents who hailed from the Middle East. At the most recent census, 14,909 Sunshine Coast residents listed New Zealand as their country of birth, followed by South Africa, with 2447 people,

Germany at 2196 and Scotland at 2132. Nisa Modngam moved to the Coast from Bangkok in December, 2005. She hoped her new life would afford her a sense of security and safety, which she has found at her rural Pomona property. “Thailand is busy and while there are plenty of smiling faces, most of the time I didn’t really feel safe there. I feel safe in Australia,” she says. Life at home in Pomona with her partner Stefan, she says, is vastly different from the bustling streets of Thailand. The mother of two relocated from Bangkok where for 20 years she worked for an insurance firm, as well as on her family’s farm. Here, she has channelled her work ethic into the Coast’s lifeblood tourism industry, working at Noosaville’s popular Krung Thep Thai Restaurant. She says she hopes to one day achieve a long-held dream of starting her own business. The softly spoken Modngam and son Boston, 15, recently took Australian citizenship, a step they say acknowledges Australia as their adopted home. For Boston, it’s also a critical step in his hopes of joining Australia’s airforce – a contribution that could one day take him to the front line of Australia’s defence force. “I became a citizen because I want to be able to have an Australian passport and want to stay here and be a good Australian citizen,” says Nisa. “I like to work here, I enjoy my work every day.” Similarly Khan, his wife and their three children, who play weekend sport and enjoy the beach, are officially Australian after pledging allegiance at a recent Sunshine Coast Council-run ceremony. “It was an important step, and for our kids too – they like Australia and so they want to call themselves Australian,” says Khan. “They’ve learnt their native language and they understand it, but they don’t really speak it. They will reply in English. English is the language they know, it’s the language they speak at school and of course they hear it on the TV. “My kids have been brought up here mostly, they are used to being here. They do not know anything else. And my son, when we came here, was not even one year old; now he is practically seven.” More than 70 people accepted citizenship at the most recent ceremony. These events, held bi-monthly across the Coast, are consistently well-attended. Last year alone, says a council spokeswoman, more than 900 people became citizens on the Sunshine Coast, making the region the state’s fourth largest for citizenship recipients. “Predominantly, Sunshine Coast citizenship recipients are from the United Kingdom, followed by New Zealand and South Africa,” she says. Each new Australian is given a certificate and often a small native tree in a long-observed tradition. With citizenship comes the right to vote, be called for jury duty and other civic responsibilities. But sometimes just being able to make a difference is enough. “The fact that I get to see a lot of people who are sick and we get to help them, that gives me a lot of satisfaction,” says Khan. “When you see a patient after they’ve recovered and they thank you for helping them. There is no better reward than that.”

documentary on the history of Murdering Creek and its indigenous significance could be among the first stories told under an ambitious plan to create a thriving Sunshine Coast film industry. Director David Granato began discussions with the head of the new Sunshine Coast Film Corporation, local businessman Mark “Charlie” Gardener, this week
on plans for the documentary, which explores a blood-stained chapter in the Coast’s history. According to Gardener, the new not-for-profit corporation will both market the Coast as a location hotspot and link filmmakers with investors. Discussions are underway with Bollywood filmmakers, he says. The corporation, to be run by a board, will also oversee a local film festival earmarked for next year.
Gardener has already secured a $50,000 prize commitment from corporate sponsor 24/7 Vitality for a scriptwriting competition, which is now open. He’s confident of securing funding to produce the winning film here on the Coast, adding that a third party investment body is currently being established to work closely with the corporation. “We are in the throes of creating a new, sustainable filmmaking industry on the Sunshine Coast,” says Gardener. Gardener has begun discussions with Baldwin Films, headed up by stunt man Danny Baldwin. Baldwin told MWP he was in the process of securing several scripts, which may be tailored to represent Sunshine Coast locations. Gardener says the film corporation’s goal is to create a new industry on the Coast to boost employment, promote tourism and develop international connections. The corporation is currently assessing fundraising avenues for the Murdering Creek documentary.

MAKE-A-WISH HELPS REX’S DREAM COME TRUE

The classic little boy’s dream of becoming a fireman came true for five-year-old Rex Darmanin-Rees this week. The Sunshine Coast boy who suffers from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia got to dress in his own fireman’s costume, ride in a fire engine, help fire-fighters extinguish a small spot fire, tour the Caloundra fire station and even take a chopper flight over the area. It was all thanks to Make-A-Wish Australia, which grants wishes to kids with life-threatening illnesses. Rex, who has spent much of the past year in hospital undergoing treatment, was picked up from Meridan State College by a convoy of fire trucks and a full police escort. At the station he extinguished the spot fire before embarking on the chopper flight, which landed back at his school where he was greeted by around 2000 students. Rex’s mum Kristen says looking forward to the day helped Rex “stay positive through the tough times”. Make-A-Wish has granted over 7000 children’s wishes since 1985.

LNP TARGETS FISHER WORDS Jarna Baudinette The race for the federal seat of Fisher is heating up, with nine local Liberal National Party candidates set to stand for pre-selection at the end of the month. Former Howard Government minister Mal Brough has been named on the pre-selection ballot. Also in the running is LNP rising star James McGrath, a party strategist who worked behind the scenes on Campbell Newman’s successful State Government election campaign. Stephen Ainscough, Richard Bruinsma, Graeme Mickelburg, Alan Neilsen, Daniel Purdie, Peta Simpson and Andrew Wallace have also been named on the ballot, which will be decided on July 29. Fisher is one of only 10 federal seats not held by the LNP in Queensland. It currently belongs to former LNP member Peter Slipper, who left the party to sit as

ueensland will need to save $4 billion over three years to keep its promise to return to a surplus in 2014/15, Treasurer Tim Nicholls says. That is one billion dollars more than outlined in the Commission of Audit interim report into the state’s finances, led by Peter Costello. Nicholls tabled the government’s response to the interim report last week. He says the audit reveals overly optimistic budget assumptions and forward estimates made by the previous Labor government. Of particular concern were the previous Labor government’s forward estimates that transfer duty revenue would increase by 14 per cent year on year to 2015/16, employee expenses would decelerate, and net capital expenditure would decline. He says after the report was handed down in June, the
government asked the Treasury to review the forward estimates. As a result, transfer duty revenue will now be revised down by $812 million over four years. That is on top of $850 million in unfunded budget risks identified in the report, such as additional Health Payroll funding and a Child Safety deficit. “This equates to a $1.66 billion budget black hole over the forward estimates left by the former government,” Nicholls says. “With that in mind, the government has identified a savings target of more than $4 billion over three years. A security camera will soon be installed in a section of Kings Cross where 18-year-old Thomas Kelly was fatally king hit, despite the NSW government having turned down a funding request for the scheme. The closed-circuit TV (CCTV) camera was one of six approved by the City of Sydney Council in March following police requests for better quality footage of the area, News Limited reports. Jodie Minus, a spokeswoman for Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore, says the council hoped to have the six cameras installed next month after the State Government rejected a request for $500,000. “Over the last 10 years the City of Sydney has stepped in to ensure cameras were installed to support police, after a lack of funding by the state,” she says. The council will fund the program to bring the total number of cameras in Kings Cross to nine, Minus says. AAP

ACCC had 600 carbon complaints in 10 days The consumer watchdog has received more than 600 complaints or inquiries about the carbon tax’s impact on prices. The Federal Government’s $23-a-tonne impost on carbon emissions started on July 1. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says of the more than 8000 general complaints it has received so far this month, 630 related to the carbon tax. “Clearly the biggest group have been about energy retailers,” ACCC deputy chairman Michael Schaper told ABC Radio on Thursday. Other sectors included construction, landfill and refrigerant gases. The commission says 20 cases are being investigated. AAP

FEARLES PREVIEW Educating our youth on ways to avoid conflict during a night out on the town is essential if we are to avoid more senseless deaths. WORDS Jarna Baudinette

outh violence has been in the headlines again this week, following the death of Sydney teenager Thomas Kelly after he was king-hit in a random attack on July 7. Kelly, 18, had just arrived in Kings Cross to celebrate a friend’s birthday when an unknown attacker punched him in the face. He sustained massive injuries after hitting his head on the footpath and never regained consciousness. While the connection between alcohol, drugs and aggressive behaviour is well known, and party hotspots such as Kings Cross are home to their share of violent assaults, the incident bore none of the hallmarks of a typical pub stoush – there was no previous altercation between the victim and assailant, and Kelly was captured on CCTV just

seconds before the attack speaking to a mate on his mobile phone with one hand, and holding his girlfriend’s hand with the other. Another man in the vicinity at the time reported being punched moments before. NSW assistant police commissioner Mark Murdoch labelled the assault a “random, unprovoked, mindless attack, committed by a mindless individual”. Kelly’s family describes a friendly, caring young man – not the type of teenager you would expect to become involved in a street fight – who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. But he isn’t the first young man to be killed or severely injured by a single punch. Melbourne man James Macready-Bryan was assaulted while celebrating his 20th birthday in October 2006, resulting in catastrophic brain damage. In November of that same year, Perth teenager Skye Barkwith, 17, suffered a fatal fractured skull after being punched outside a hotel, and two years later Justin Galligan, 16, died after being king-hit at a party in North Balwyn in Melbourne’s east. In 2007 Caloundra man Josh Mills, 22, was killed in similar circumstances, and an MWP staff

Students ask how he can bear to talk about Matthew every day, and he tells them he does it “so your parents don’t have to”
ESS member’s 18-year-old son was knocked unconscious after being king-hit from behind on the Gold Coast late last year. All were situations involving alcohol. Speaking to ABC’s 7.30, Kelly’s father Ralph said he had been concerned about his son going out in Kings Cross, echoing the fears of parents across Australia who are worried for their children’s safety amid reports of escalating youth drinking and violence. Paul Stanley’s son Matthew was a popular, athletic 15-year-old when he was killed by a single punch at a party in Alexandra Hills in 2006. Established by Paul and his wife Kay, the Matthew Stanley Foundation has since collaborated with the State Government on the One Punch Can Kill and Party Safe campaigns. Paul Stanley travels around the state speaking to school students about his son’s death and has presented talks to more than 150,000 students. His presentations aim “just to put a reality into the fact that really bad things can happen to good people, and the one punch you throw can completely alter everyone’s life,” he says. “Even though you didn’t mean to hurt the person, you killed them.”
Young people often have no experience of violence outside films or video games, and don’t understand the potential danger of a single punch. Stanley says speaking about his son helps to personalise the issue. “If it was you standing up in front of the same group of kids, saying I know a guy whose son was killed, kids would think ‘Oh, that’s really sad … but it looks like the Titans are going good at the moment!’,” he says. “But when it’s me they go, ‘Wow, he’s talking about his own son’, and so it puts a reality to it.” Stanley’s presentation often provokes strong emotional reactions from teenagers. One high schooler recently told him she was supposed to be in a fight that afternoon, but had decided not to participate after hearing Matthew’s story. The foundation has launched a new campaign called Walk Away Chill Out (WACO), which encourages young people to reflect on their own behaviour – and the potential consequences – before resorting to violence. “The whole idea is to give young people the opportunity to do something in between [thinking] ‘this situation is getting out of hand’ and ending up with someone lying
bleeding on the road,” Stanley says. “It’s all right to say, ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that’, and equally important, it’s all right for the person you’re saying it to, to accept that.” In the alcohol-fuelled environment of a party or pub, innocent interactions such as one person bumping another or accidentally spilling a drink can quickly get out of hand – the fight that led to Mills’ death reportedly started over a spilled beer. Stanley says the aim of WACO is for young people to realise that “there is something else you can do – you don’t have to react violently”. Equally important is for friends to support that decision and not think less of somebody for it. Stanley also encourages worried parents to educate themselves on youth violence. “When we go into schools we will ask kids, do you want your parents to be your friends, or do you want them to be your parents? And 99 times out of 100 they will say – or they’ll write down, because we ask them to write it – we want them to be our parents. “What we as parents need to do is make sure we have guidelines – to say no, you’re 13 so you’re not going to that party with a six-pack, I don’t

care whether or not everyone else’s parents are doing it. As adults we can get bullied by our kids, so we need to actually pick up the phone and call so-and-so’s parents, and see what they’re actually allowing.” The issue is complex and difficult to address, but Stanley says the foundation is committed to preventing more deaths. Students ask how he can bear to talk about Matthew every day, and he tells them he does it “so your parents don’t have to”. “There is no magic wand that you can wave, but if we stop trying, we’re not going to get anywhere,” he says. “It’s about saying that we, the community, have had a gutful and are trying to do something about what’s happening. And it’s also about people taking it on board and realising that you can’t blame the government, you can’t blame the cops, you can’t say someone else should be doing something – you can only take it on board yourself. “And as your friend, I’ve got to say this may not be the right way to do things – let’s have a breather, calm down a bit, realise it’s only a few millilitres of beer that’s been spilled. People have died for that, and that’s the terrible thing about it.”

here are a lot of misconceptions around superannuation as an investment vehicle. Some of the advantages of superannuation are: • Income payments are tax free after the age of 60. • Tax is levied on income within the superannuation fund while in accumulation mode at a maximum of only 15 per cent and this falls to zero when in pension mode. • You can use it to acquire a business premises. • The Centrelink treatment of a pension fund can be more favourable than their assessment
of assets held in non-superannuation assets. • It can be protected against creditors. You will notice that there is nothing mentioned above about investments. This is because superannuation is not a class of asset – it is a structure only. It is needed to fund retirement and as such, governments need to continue to provide incentives for people to allocate money to it. The short sightedness of the current government has severely limited the amount that can be accumulated in super, and thus it may become necessary to invest outside of the superannuation environment. Interestingly, recent research has found almost 60 per cent of Australians have no idea how much is in their super fund, let alone where it is invested. However, it is important to take an active interest in where your funds are invested, and what effect legislative changes
will bring. It is also important to understand that superannuation can be invested into any asset class. There are many questions to be answered in assessing which is the most appropriate super fund for you. The choice has become bewildering and now includes industry funds, retail super funds, wrap accounts, SMAs (separately managed accounts) and SMSFs (self managed superannuation funds). Fees and investment options can vary markedly and it is necessary to spend time analysing your requirements and what super fund is most likely to fill those needs. Typically this cannot be done alone and it is necessary to consult a reputable adviser to navigate these tricky waters.

know, some of you out there don’t actually like shopping. There, I’ve said it. I’ll even go on to say that some loathe it, and often find shopping to be a really overwhelming, frustrating experience. Yes, this concept does baffle me, but the longer I work as a stylist, the more women I meet who truly find it difficult, with many considering shopping to be quite a chore. In fact, a recent study found that only 29 per cent of women admit to enjoying going out to buy something to wear. Celebs take the hassle out of shopping by using a stylist – why not you?
I or you, f t o n s i st If a styli all local m s r u o s met y a head to w l a e s! I hav shion a f y boutique l d n e ced, fri experien w their o n k o h sw want y l u assistant r t y e plus th product, tomers. s u c r i e h to help t
Why the stylist? Because when you want to go, they’ll help you stay. Customers often say to me, “I would have left with nothing by now,” and that’s a waste of precious time. When you shop with someone who knows the stock, you can eliminate endless looking. A stylist has an unbiased opinion You’ll be surprised by what you’ll try when you are with someone who understands body shapes and knows what styles suit. Most women instinctively reach for what they already have and need encouragement to experiment. You have a personal runner Once you have your kit off, nothing is more annoying than re-dressing just to fetch another size/colour/style. Many shoppers exit at this point empty handed, but when you’re shopping with a stylist they’ll do the hard work for you.

“Women today are so busy and the time they may have had to browse all day in shops in their teens and 20s is no longer available. This time squeeze leads to lack of planning and rushed choices. Impulse purchases can leave us feeling deflated after a shopping experience. I suggest to my readers that they do a wardrobe edit, then make an appointment with themselves for a couple of hours, or a stylist, and fill in the obvious gaps. Treat it like a work project and the end result will ensure it’s worth the effort and expense.” Nikki Parkinson, fashion blogger A AAP

TOP TIPS TO AVOID BACK PAIN Mark Stitt is the director of Suncoast Fitness
B
ack pain is a very common problem, affecting about eight out of 10 people in Western countries such as Australia. About 90 per cent of those suffering back pain will improve spontaneously without doing anything, but for most, their back pain will reoccur unless they take measures to control it. The number one cause of lower back pain is a lack of (or inappropriate) exercise, and the resultant postural changes which accompany the body’s adaptation to this. Preventing back pain is much easier than treating it. The following strategies will help you avoid back pain:
EXERCISE REGULARLY Regular physical activity is important for maintaining a healthy back. Exercise increases strength and endurance in your back and allows the muscles to function better.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT Being overweight can cause strain and stress, especially in the lower back.
REMEMBER TO STRETCH Regular stretching exercises help to keep the muscles and ligaments in your back flexible.
QUIT SMOKING In addition to countless other health benefits, quitting smoking can help to prevent back pain. Smoking increases your
PREVIEW When it comes to back pain, prevention is better than cure.
sensitivity to pain and interferes with blood circulation. It also reduces the flow of nutrients to the muscles and joints, making the back weaker.
KEEP MOVING Avoid standing or sitting in the same position for long periods of time, as this puts stress on your back.
KEEP YOUR CORE STRONG The stronger your abdominal muscles are, the less strain on the muscles in your back. Simple core-strengthening exercises include: The Bridge – this is a great exercise for strengthening the lower back and hamstring muscles. Lie down on your back, knees up and heels flat on the floor. Slowly press your feet into the floor to lift your hips up off the ground until they form a straight line with your shoulders and knees. Hold the bridge for 10 seconds, keeping your ab muscles tight. Lower back down to the starting position and repeat for 10-12 repetitions. The Plank – this not only strengthens the muscles along your spine, but is also a highly effective abdominal exercise. While most people work their abs in hopes of developing a six-pack, ab exercises also play a vital role in strengthening your core, which results in less back pain down the road. To perform the plank, start in a push-up position but with your elbows and
forearms on the floor instead of your hands. Tighten your abs as you hold this position, your body forming a straight line from your shoulders all the way down to your ankles. Hold the plank for 30 seconds, or as long as possible, and round your back. Inhale to return. Perform 15 repetitions. Reverse Curl – lie on your back with your knees bent. Lift your feet from the floor, and adjust your legs so that they are in a table top position, with your shins parallel to the ceiling and your calves parallel to the floor. Imagine you are doing a pelvic tilt. Contract your abdominal muscles to lift your hips off the floor. Perform 12 to 15 repetitions. Side Plank – lie on your right side with your knees bent. Lean on your right elbow, and place your left hand on your left hip. Inhale to prepare. As you exhale, lift your right hip from the floor. Perform eight repetitions, and then switch sides.

NEW STEM CELL ADVANCES industry will do that. We have to try and make these as available to people as possible.” Trounson said the HIV research uses blood stem cells to mimic a gene mutation found in a small proportion of the population who are immune to the virus. The approach is based on the case of an American, known as the Berlin patient, who was cured of HIV after receiving a life-saving bone marrow transplant to treat leukaemia from a donor who carried the HIV-immune mutation. The institute is also using embryonic stem cells to try and cure blindness caused by macular degeneration and to develop insulin-producing cells for type 1 diabetes sufferers, Trounson said. Meanwhile, new drug treatments for cancer have been developed using stem cells which are now being tested on patients, said Trounson. However, even if the trials are successful it could be six to seven years before those treatments are widely available to patients. AAP
The Thermage Face The procedure can help smooth and tighten your skin for an overall naturally younger looking appearance without surgery or injections.
What kind of results should I expect? Everyone can expect some collagen tightening. Many patients have seen • Smoother, tighter skin with less sagging • Redefined contours along the jaw line and under the chin • Softening of wrinkles and fine lines around the mouth, eyes and forehead • Tightening the saggy skin under the chin
How does it work?
Before Thermage
As you age, the collagen in your skin breaks down resulting in wrinkles and sagging skin. Thermage uses patented radio frequency (RF) technology to safely heat the deeper layers of your skin, stimulating existing collagen and promoting new collagen growth for younger looking skin.
How long will the results last? The effects continue to improve for up to six months following a single treatment. Results can last for years depending on your skin condition and natural aging process.
“
2 months post treatment
I was thrilled. My skin was smoother. My laugh lines were less visible and my jaw line had better definition. I couldn’t put the mirror down.
“
A world-renowned Australian stem cell expert says it’s crucial that any potential cures using the technology are available globally, particularly in developing countries. Professor Alan Trounson heads the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, which is advancing towards a cure for conditions including HIV and diabetes. Trounson, the former director of Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories in Melbourne, said the research institute’s work towards a HIV cure was about to enter human trials. He said if the trials were successful, further research would be needed to modify the technology so it could be affordably used where it is needed most, in Africa. “I want the HIV work to go global because it shouldn’t be restricted to patients in Western (countries),” Trounson told AAP. “We’re going to have to modify some of that further research to get it into a suitable treatment that we can use in Africa. “I’m very hopeful that the

How long before I can return to my normal activities? There’s no special care needed after the procedure and most patients return to their regular activities immediately following treatment.

TASMANIA LEADS AUSTRALIAN WHISKY GROWTH
I
t is 20 years since Bill Lark set the course for Australian whisky while out fishing in Tasmania. Gazing out over Lake Sorrel with a dram in hand, the connoisseur realised the island was fertile ground for whisky production. Having just hooked a juicy brown trout, Lark wondered whether he could ever capture his other great pleasure from local waters. “I looked around and thought ‘why isn’t anyone making whisky in Tasmania?’ “We’ve got this wonderful climate and terrific brewing barley and peat bogs and all this beautiful clean water. It just seemed crazy.” Standing in his way was a 1901 law that prohibited small-scale distilling. It had been decreed by the government of the day concerned by illegal moonshine. Rum at the time was a tradeable commodity. Fortunately, politicians circa 1992 were happy to push for a repeal, and Lark’s application to establish the first distillery in Australia was rubber stamped within days by Canberra’s amber spirit lovers. “The good thing about the whisky industry is that everyone likes it,” laughs Lark. “There are now about 30 distilleries around Australia doing wonderful things.” Distilleries have popped up all over Australia in an industry estimated to be worth about $20 million. But the biggest are based in Tasmania, where the likes of Lark,

Nant, Hellyer’s Road and Tasmania Distillery produce thousands of barrels a year, alongside a few small franchises and independent bottlers. Tasmanian whiskies are generally defined by full-flavoured creamy styles, with mouth-covering lingering tones, their distinct flavours driven by the island’s soils and water. Matured in the cast off barrels of ports, wines and bourbons, they’re cut in a similar style to the Scots and often compared favourably to Speyside whiskies. The reputation of Australian brands overseas has been building steadily, with exports to Europe, Asia and North America increasing. Among them is the Tasmanian Distillery’s prize squeeze Sullivan’s Cove, which won two world whisky awards, in 2007 and 2011, and was named the fourth best anywhere by the French critic Gregoire Sarafian. Chief distiller Patrick Maguire says a more refined palate among whisky drinkers around the world has caused the spike in demand. “It seems to be boom time for us and I know that some of the others are doing the same,” Maguire says. “Getting whisky in the bottle quick enough is our main problem at the moment.” But breaking into the local spirits market hasn’t been easy. In true tall poppy fashion, Australian consumers have often turned their noses up at home-grown whiskies in favour of a Johnnie Walker or Glenmorangie,
When we first started going to trade shows, we had a lot of trouble getting people to even look at us
especially when local drops can be twice the price. “When we first started going to the various trade shows, we had a lot of trouble getting people to even look at us,” says Maguire. “Australia isn’t known for producing whisky and the brands aren’t recognised, so people didn’t really want to know, but now it’s a different story.” With quality never in question, the recent spike in Australian sales has been attributed to a carefully targeted trickle-down effect. Suppliers have set their sights on
drinkers with influence, especially the connoisseur. Gradually, Australian brands like Overeem and Hellyers Road have crept into premium hotels and top restaurants and bars. “We’re very fortunate that every one of us is winning awards to help put Tasmania on the world whisky map,” says Maguire, who is also chairman of the Australian Distillers Association. “That’s the beauty of what we’re doing down here, because everybody is doing it from the heart, not the head.” AAP

SWEET ON SANGRIA WORDS Janet K Keeler
O
n a quick tour of Barcelona and the Costa Brava in Spain recently, we enjoyed sangria every time we ate tapas. Prawns, patatas bravas, Iberian ham and chunks of bread went nicely with the essential glass of fruit and wine. We noticed that almost everyone else sipping on the blood-red, fruitladen wine drink were tourists, too. The locals were enjoying mixed drinks and beer, it seemed. That didn’t stop us. Sangria is popular all over the world, even if the Spanish consider it a cheap party drink whose main purpose is to lubricate a crowd. But sangria doesn’t have to be made with sketchy wine, and its adaptability to all sorts of fruits makes it an every-season drink. The trick with making sangria is to chill it for at least 24 hours before serving. This allows the fruit juices to marry with the wine and liqueurs. If you’re in a real rush, make it in the morning to serve in the evening. Anything less and you won’t get the full flavour of the drink. If the recipe calls for carbonated soda, add that right before serving to preserve the fizz.
When selecting a wine for sangria, you should subscribe to the same advice as you would for cooking with wine. Don’t use something you wouldn’t drink by itself. But don’t go overboard and buy a $25 bottle of wine that you will be diluting with fruit juices, other spirits and ice. You should be able to find a bottle for $10 or less that will suffice. For white sangrias, use pinot grigio, moscato, albarino or even a riesling. All of these wines bring proper acidity to play off the sweetness of the fruit. For red sangrias, consider rioja from Spain or syrah, merlot or pinot noir. Sangria is a forgiving drink. It works well with most fruits, though stay away from bananas, which tend to disintegrate and make the drink muddy. Plums, nectarines and peaches get along just fine with either red or white wine. And don’t forget apple slices. They keep their shape while soaking up lots of flavours. So while sangria doesn’t get the proper reverence in its birthplace, we’ll lift a glass of fruit goodness to toast just about anything. There are many recipes, but we like this one. It’s great for a lazy Sunday barbecue with friends.
PARTY SANGRIA 1 bottle of red wine 1 lemon, cut into wedges 1 orange, cut into wedges 1 lime, cut into wedges 1 small can of diced pineapples (with juice) 2 tablespoons sugar Splash of orange juice or lemonade
4 cups ginger ale 2 shots of gin or triple sec (optional) 1 cup of raspberries or strawberries (may use thawed or frozen) Pour wine into a large pitcher and squeeze the juice from the lemon,
orange and lime wedges into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges (leaving out the seeds) and pineapple, then add sugar, orange juice and gin or triple sec. Chill overnight. Add ginger ale, berries and ice just before serving. If you’d like to serve right away, use chilled red
wine and serve over lots of ice. For a non-alcoholic drink, mix 4 cups of cranberry juice with 1 cup of orange juice, ¼ cup fresh lemon juice, 1 pear, diced and 1 apple, diced. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Just before serving add 3 cups of lemon-lime fizzy drink and ice.

Jemma says
Nathan says
CLASSY & PRACTICAL: VW PASSAT 118-TSI NATHAN: I have a feeling I’m going to like this one. JEMMA: I’m feeling it too. N: For a start it’s the doors. They close with a good solid thunk. I like it already. We don’t even need to drive this one. And it smells good. J: Hmm, new car smell. N: (After fiddling with the key for several minutes.) It must be getting increasingly difficult to steal these cars. I mean, I’ve got the key and I still can’t get it started. J: In your own time, Nath. First things first. Does it have a mirror on the sun visor? Oh, yes it does, and it’s got a snazzy light. N: Here’s an interesting feature – unlike many automatics, this car holds still when you take your foot off the break, preventing you from creeping forward or rolling back. It’s because the auto hold button is on. Personally, I find that a little disconcerting – like I’ve left the park brake on – so I’m turning it off, but it would certainly help in city traffic. N: I like this car. Smooth and solid
[ 38 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J ULY 20, 2012
38.indd 1
but nicely damped. It feels incredibly well-built and tightly put together. J: Yes, indeed. N: Good brakes, very sensitive, and it’s got a lot of torque. It moves away spritely from low in the rev range. J: Nathan, it sounds like you really know what you’re talking about. N: I really want to put my foot down. J: Nice upholstery. I love the simple black leather – very understated.
N: Would you buy one of these? They say wagons feel a bit clumsy but this drives like a sedan, though I am not a fan of the speedo. J: Stick with your board shorts then. N: (silence) J: That was a joke, Nathan. N: It’s a minor gripe, but the increments are unevenly spaced. Still, it’s quick to oblige. J: My gripe is with the seats. Not all
seat functions are electric. To put the seat back for a nap, say, you have to turn this awkward knob. N: Yep, it’s unusual in cars these days – on a par with manually winding windows. But other than that, this car has everything the upmarket executive family would need. J: How many executive families do you know, Nathan? N: You would easily fit your designer stroller and golf clubs in the boot. J: And it has two sets of interior lights. Very handy. N: Good bump absorption, too. Oh look, we’re heading into Buderim. Cruising Buderim in a very Buderim car. It’s Toorak tractor territory here – they’re those luxury four-wheel drivers whose owners never take them of the tarmac – yet this car feels very much as though it has every right to be here. J: What about the instrument cluster? N: Yeah, look, because the higher numbers seem quite a long way around the dial, you do feel like you are going faster than you actually are,
M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

[ each time you look at the needle on the speedo. J: Maybe that’s deliberate to slow us down. N: Those Germans are a safety conscious mob. J: Try out the windscreen wipers. (15 minutes later the back wiper is still going, Nathan and Jemma pull over and try to shut it off). N: I can’t turn it off. I’ve moved the wiper switch in every possible direction and it just won’t stop. (Nathan turns the engine off twice to try to reset the wiper.) J: Ignore it and give me a go. N: You’ll notice when you drive, Jemma, it does zero to 100 kilometres per hour very quickly. Time to swap. J: It has a curious chunky little start key, that you’ve got to slot into the dash… obviously designed by man. (As we speed off from 0-100 kilometres per hour… rear wiper is still going.) J: Wow, that was quite quick. N: I’d say it reached the 100 kilometres per hour speed limit in no more than six seconds. It’s worth noting that the seven-speed DSG –
MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU

that stands for Direct Shift Gearbox – transmission has two sets of gears and two clutches. While one gear set and clutch is engaged as you drive the vehicle, the second clutch pre-selects the next gear and waits for power to be transferred. It basically means it takes no more than three to four 100ths of a second to shift up or down through the gears. J: So that explains why it’s so fast to accelerate, and so smooth. N: How’s about this for nifty? Say you’re driving with a passenger who just won’t stop talking and you find yourself getting tired, the car’s driver fatigue detection will actually sound a chime to wake you and the display will advise you to take a break. J: Are you saying I talk too much? Anyway, how does that work?

N: Volkswagen says the technology constantly monitors your individual driving characteristics such as steering. Impressive stuff. J: It has good visibility, which is important to me, and it sits nice and firmly on the road. J: I like the dials, they’re nice and neat – a nice tidy little package. J: It is very solid, isn’t it? J: I like the interior, it has a lot of buttons. To drive, it doesn’t feel like a big car. N: It’s because it’s so zippy and responsive. J: The brakes are very responsive, with just a feather-light touch your head moves forward. Sorry, did I give you whiplash? N: Almost! It’s very much a conservative upmarket car – I like that. The sort of car whereby people who see you get into it, might expect you to live in the better part of town on a leafy tree-lined street and have children with names like Tarquin. N: I’m disappointed our time with the car is over. J: It’s just my company you will miss really… write that down.

WHAT
LIES BENEATH PREVIEW You don’t want to discover any nasty little surprises after you’ve signed on the dotted line, so read through our checklist before purchasing your next property.
W
ant to do more than kick the proverbial tyre on the properties you are inspecting? Read on for the ins and outs of DIY inspections. When you go to have a look at a home for sale, do you really know what you are looking for? While no one would consider purchasing a home without first getting the all-clear from your building and pest inspectors, it is up to all wouldbe buyers to take a good look at the home before making an offer. Number of bedrooms, views and size all matter, but there’s more to inspecting a property than simply having a nosy through cupboards and measuring the kitchen bench to see if your kettle will fit. Remember, no property is perfect and if you discover faults with a property it won’t necessarily be a deal-breaker. But it’s good to know what potential repairs you will be up for in the future. Here are some more things to look out for. Before you even step inside the dwelling, take a look at the orientation of the building and location of windows. Does the building’s placement take advantage of natural breezes in summer and capture the winter sun? Check out the external pipes, gutters and downpipes for leaks or rust. Open up the fuse box to see if there are obvious signs of wear and tear. If you can do so without bringing out the ladder, check the roof for obvious signs of damage such as missing tiles or sagging spots. While you are standing back checking out the roof, take a look at the state of the entire building and note any cracked brickwork and damaged windows.
Will the home need a new coat of paint soon? Inside the house, taking a look at the decor is important, but remember walls can be repainted and doors replaced. It’s essential to look beyond those things. Run your hand over the walls to check for bumps, cracks or other signs of damage. Open up the windows to check they still run smoothly and run your eye over carpets to look for stains or marks that could indicate water damage. Open and close doors to see that they don’t stick and look out for signs of pests – sagging floors or hollow-sounding walls might all indicate termite damage. In the bathrooms, look out for signs of mould and check out the ventilation. Take a look at the grout and check tiles for signs of damage. Lifting tiles might be a sign of water damage, a problem that should be addressed. Turn on the taps to check the water pressure and see how well the water drains. Back out in the lounge room, take a look at the size of the room and the storage available – will it be enough and if not, will it be easy to add storage? Think about the placement of your furniture and if your pieces will work in the space. Next, head over to the light switches and check to see how clean and new they are. The condition of power points will also give an indication of how new the wiring is in the home. Take a good look at the carpet and lift up any rugs to check the flooring for signs of damage. Check the flyscreens on all of the windows for signs of wear and tear. In the kitchen, test the taps and check out the condition of splashbacks, the cupboards and benchtops. We all accumulate so many appliances and kitchen bits and pieces – is there enough room for all yours?

maintenance in the future – pools need to be cleaned, fences and decks repainted or stained and sheds cleaned or repaired. Is this something you are prepared to do? No property is perfect, and many buyers are happy to add their touches to a new home with simple repairs and updates, but a thorough DIY inspection is a must in order to limit the potential for surprises in the future.
QUESTIONS FOR THE OWNER/AGENT:
Back outside, take a look around the garden. If you don’t have a green thumb, a garden full of fast-growing lush plantings will need to be managed – do you have the time or cash to do it? Take a look at the surrounding homes to see if there will be any issues with neighbours looking over your backyard. Often any privacy issues can be addressed simply with inexpensive screens, but sometimes more serious additions to fences are required. Check out the trees in the backyard – any dying or dangerous trees may need to be removed in the future, which is not a cheap exercise. Check out the pool, fences, sheds and any other structures. All of these will require
• Does the home contain asbestos? Remember, thousands of homes around the Coast were built using asbestos roofs, walls or fences. In itself, asbestos is not usually a problem and shouldn’t turn you off buying a home. However, asbestos roofs or walls that are damaged are a concern and if you are planning a reno in the future, it will add to your renovation costs. • Is the area prone to termites? Take a quick look yourself on any wood that touches the ground such as decks and fences to see if there are signs of damage. • How old is the hot water system and how well does it perform? • Have there been renovations and extensions on the original home? Quality renos and additions can add significant value to properties, but you want to ensure they have been done well. • Ask about heaters, air-conditioners and ceiling fans – how old are they and do they run well? • How often does the lawn need to be mowed and the garden pruned?
VISIT YOUR LOCAL AND EXPLORE THE BENEFITS OF NEW! You don’t have to be dreaming to live in your dream home. When you build new at Stockland you really can experience the difference of a new home designed to suit you with easy maintenance, the latest kitchen and bathroom, energy efficient materials – the list goes on. And, until 31 July, we’ll even pay your stamp duty when you buy land. At a Stockland Living Display Centre your dreams come to life with stunning new home designs on display. For more information visit stockland.com.au/buildnew
No Stamp Duty † Offer Ends July 31 *
• Most open homes happen on the weekend, but it’s a good idea to drive by the property on a weekday to check out the level of traffic and noise at different times of day. • Keep notes as you go – it’s easy to forget the colour of the kitchen walls and size of the floor tiles within minutes of leaving a home. It’s also a good idea to draw a quick sketch of the floor plan and write down a few points on what you loved about the property and what you would change. • The Real Estate Institute of Australia advises potential buyers ask for a copy of the contract before making an offer. • Talk to neighbours about the area – is it a safe, quiet spot to live in?

NEWS & VIEWS
A snapshot of who’s doing what in the industry RENTAL MARKET BOOMING
S
tatistics have shown strong rental demand across Queensland for most of this year, and Platinum Properties director Geoff Ohmsen says he sees no sign of the local market waning, with his agency experiencing higher than normal levels of enquiry. Ohmsen says this enquiry is coming from prospective tenants, but also from new landlords who may be leasing their property as an alternative to selling. The Kawana region is also garnering interest due to the massive health precinct and town centre slated for the area. “There’s a strong rental market at the moment, especially from Minyama through to Bokarina and to Wurtulla, all down that side,” Ohmsen says. “Owners might not be quite ready to sell, or they are travelling overseas or working away, so they’ll give us their property to lease for a year and let us ‘babysit’ it for that time to allow the market to recover somewhat.”
Ohmsen says Platinum Properties is increasing staff numbers to take care of the “influx” of new landlords. The agency has recently appointed a new property and business development manager, Grace Beaumont, who is busy signing up new clients as well as looking after a portfolio. Olivia Sprott has also joined the team as receptionist. “We want to look after our new clients, but also ensure our existing landlords continue to experience a high standard of service,” Ohmsen says.
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS FOR RIDDELL Gary de Paoli marked his first anniversary as principal of Riddell Real Estate on July 1, and says the Woombye agency has recorded a solid month to help celebrate. “We’ve been very fortunate with the support we’ve had over the past year, both from the community and from past and new clients,” de Paoli says. Riddell has a “loyal, upbeat” team of seven people and de Paoli says Woombye’s slower pace allows them to spend more time with buyers and sellers, and to focus on delivering results for clients. “It’s just a lovely village feel out here, and it’s where people are moving to for a break from that fast-paced lifestyle,” he says.
Olivia and Grace have joined the team
