he other day I asked my son what he would like to be when he grows up. A builder (like Bob), a superhero (it’s all Spiderman in our house) or perhaps a dancer (what can I say, the kid is going through a serious hip-hop phase). But he told me in no uncertain terms that he had no interest in growing up, that being a kid suited him just fine. Wise words from someone who is not yet five. I’m lucky that I have a job I really enjoy. Working with words is a pleasure to me, something I would do even if I didn’t get paid for it. But there are plenty of people who trudge off to work with heavy steps, counting down the days to the weekend. So it was great, this week, to read about four Sunshine Coast locals who love their occupations. Leigh Robshaw has a chat to a teacher, a lifeguard, a builder and a barista

– four professions that help keep the Sunshine Coast chugging along. Read about their workdays on page 6. At the time of going to press the Australian Olympic team was lower down on the medal tally than we’re used to being, as a nation. Will we redeem ourselves going into the second week of the London Games? Who knows, but you can find out what is on and when in our Olympic feature, on page 26. Over in our property section, which starts on page 39, I caught up with four local agents to get their top tips for vendors on getting their homes sold. If you are in the market for a new set of wheels, check out our motoring review on page 36. Nathan and I got to test drive a Mercedes this week, and while I would never say this in front of my Honda, I think I may have found my ideal car.

LIVING THE

DRE PREVIEW Meet four average Sunshine Coasters who do those everyday jobs we would be lost without. They love their work and wouldn’t change it for the world. WORDS Leigh Robshaw IMAGES Nicholas Falconer

T

here are many unsung heroes on the Coast, average people who keep our region happily ticking along. We may take them for granted, but we’d definitely miss them if they weren’t around. While we often hear complaints about unemployment on the Coast, there are plenty of people who have found their dream job here, and are able to fit a fulfilling career around our enviable relaxed lifestyle. Mostly, they are people who enjoy serving others, in one way or another, drawing personal satisfaction from their role in helping people’s lives run a little smoother. We spoke to a barista, a builder, a teacher and a lifeguard to find out what their day involves and what they love (and don’t love) about their jobs on the Coast.

TIM ADAMS, BARISTA Tim Adams (pictured left) is one of the Coast’s most sought-after men. An award-winning barista with a mobile van and a wholesale coffee business, he helps kick-start the day of many a Maroochydore worker. “I’m always the most wanted person of the day,” says Adams. “They’re always waiting for me and once they see me, their day can begin.

It’s like you’re a mother away from home for them. It’s not just a job, you’re an important person in their life

EAM “About 90 per cent of the coffees I make are for regular customers and I already know their orders, so I just look them in the eye, get a nod and make their coffee.” Tim begins making coffee – the most popular being a latte – in his van at 6am each morning, and he goes through four to five kilos of coffee by 11am. He then spends the afternoon processing, packing and distributing coffee and liaising with customers for his wholesale business, Tim Adams Speciality Coffee, which sells his freshly roasted blends to 15 outlets across the Coast, as well as interstate. Running in and out of offices all morning is physically demanding, so Tim drinks around six double ristrettos (double short blacks) a day to keep him going. “It’s quicker to consume black coffee when you’re on the go,” says Tim “I’m extremely tired by the end of the day, but it’s a great business to have. There’s a lot of negativity in business and it’s nice to do a job where you’re respected and wanted, and you can build good relationships with people.”

“The way I see it is, we create everything in our path,” says Flaskas, who fits building around his other passions – music and healing work. “Among builders, the thing you always hear is lack, lack, lack. I don’t buy into that. Most of the people I know have gone to the mines. I know they don’t like working up there, but a lot of people are caught up with having big money. What do you value more in your life? Do you value the money, or do you value being happy? “For me, it’s about my heart, my lifestyle and it’s about doing the things I love.” Flaskas says open and clear communication is the key to avoiding misunderstandings with co-workers and clients, and enjoys the social interaction that comes with the job. “Seeing people loving your creations is a really rewarding thing,” says Flaskas. “It all comes down to how we perceive things and to me, just viewing every situation as something positive or as something that has learning within it, is what I’m trying to push for.”

CHRIS FLASKAS, BUILDER

LIESL WALKER, TEACHER, SUNSHINE COAST GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Like many builders on the Coast, Chris Flaskas starts his day at 7am, has smoko at 9.30, lunch at 12.30 and knocks off around 4pm. He’s at the mercy of the weather and downturns in the economy, doesn’t get holiday and sick pay, and his body takes a beating. But that’s where the similarities between Flaskas and other builders ends. Flaskas believes in the power of positive thinking, and says that while many builders he knows have gone to work in the mines, he has more than enough work. A qualified builder and carpenter, he splits his time between sub-contracting for three building companies, and quoting on his own jobs.

Liesl Walker has one of the best jobs on the Coast

Liesl Walker appears to have scored the perfect job to complement her idyllic Sunshine Coast lifestyle. Each day, she drives a mere five minutes from her home in Cotton Tree to Sunshine Coast Grammar School at Forest Glen, where she’s a grade one teacher. School finishes at 3pm, so she has plenty of daylight hours left for her favourite after-work activities: kite surfing, wakeboarding and squash. And then there’s the holidays – 13 long weeks. She arrives at work around 7.45am ready for the school day to begin at 8.30am. A typical day involves literacy groups in the morning, when parent helpers often join in, followed by morning tea at 10.35. It’s back into the classroom at 11am

for maths, science, diary work or news, then it’s lunchtime. The afternoon is varied, with activities like chapel service, assembly and sports. It’s home time for students at 3pm, but Walker usually stays back until 4pm for organisation and planning before hitting the beach or the river. It sounds a little too good to be true – surely there are some drawbacks? “Not really, it’s perfect,” says Walker. “The hours are perfect and I can do other things after school. I guess it’s hard for young people to get into teaching on the Coast. The Coast is so great people don’t want to leave, so it’s difficult for young people to get jobs in teaching.” Walker describes Sunshine Coast Grammar as an “amazing place to work”. “Our kids are just beautiful kids; they want to be at school and it’s just brilliant. I worked in London and the playground was concrete. Here we have space to play, our kids can play with bush turkeys and chickens, and we have permaculture gardens.” The drawback of Walker’s job is that it can get tiring teaching a class of 23 students, five days a week, but it’s worth it for the chance to make a positive difference in the lives of the Coast’s young. “The fact you can influence their life is just special,” says Walker. “It’s like you’re a mother away from home for them. It’s not just a job, you’re an important person in their life.”

RHYS DRURY, SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL SENIOR LIFEGUARD Rhys Drury gets paid to hang out on the beach all day. To the untrained eye, he has the cruisiest job on the Coast, but being a council lifeguard is a lot more demanding than it looks. “When you’ve got hundreds of people in the ocean it can be really draining,” says Drury. “A lot of people think you’re just hanging down the beach all day, but the reality is, you’re counting heads all day and it’s very tiring. “Over the years, I’ve been in a numerous amount of rescues. I’ve saved hundreds of lives and had a few unfortunate cases where we haven’t got the person back. We’ve got the very best side of things and the worst of things.” Drury works a nine-day fortnight, starting at 7.30am and finishing at 4.30pm during winter, and working split shifts between the hours of 7am and 6pm in summer. His day consists of surveying the beach to assess conditions, choosing the safest place to put the red and yellow flags, maintaining rescue and safety equipment, roving the beach and of course, rescuing swimmers in trouble — on a busy day he might rescue up to 30 people. “On the Sunny Coast you’re also a bit of a tourist officer,” says Drury. “People are always drilling us for information about the local area. I enjoy meeting new people and showing off the Sunny Coast. “I love my job – it’s a great lifestyle for me. I’ve got a wife and two young children and I have a great balance, because I can spend a lot of time with my family. I don’t have to go away and work anywhere, so I’ll keep doing it as long as I can.”

LESS TALK, MORE ACTION

PHOTO: BEN VOS

T

he Sunshine Coast is facing significant challenges and opportunities which require an urgent and coordinated response from our political, business and community leaders. That is the view of Sandy Zubrinich, chair of the Sunshine Coast Business Council. Our beleaguered economy has been battered by the downturn, says Zubrinich. But on the upside, there are game-changing projects in the pipeline, including the new tertiary hospital and the Maroochydore Principal Activity Centre. These will undoubtedly benefit the region, but Zubrinich says the Coast cannot afford to limp along in the meantime, waiting for those benefits to be realised. What we need now is a clear vision with defined goals, responsibilities, less conversation, and a little more action, she says. “It’s not just about planning, it’s

Your first meeting is at our expense. Arrange an appointment today.

about doing, and at the moment we are very light on the doing.” Zubrinich is ready to roll up her sleeves and have the SCBC play a productive role in achieving results for the region. Her professional background is in business building, strategy and management with major companies such as Ernst and Young, and Telstra. “The product is irrelevant – it’s about building and getting businesses to perform and that’s what I’ve always focused on.” She and other directors of the business council have scheduled quarterly meetings with the Premier from this month, and are bringing key stakeholders together on August 8 to devise a plan to maximise the opportunities to flow from the new hospital and health precinct. “We’d be very disappointed if the State Government thinks its job is done on the Coast for the next five years,” Zubrinich says.

GRANTS UP FOR GRABS The Sunshine Coast Council’s Community Grants Program is now open, offering the chance to win minor grants of up to $2000 or major grants of up to $50,000. Information sessions will be held at libraries. Phone 5441 8616 to book. POLICE SEEK HELP Police investigations continue into the alleged assault of a security officer at Caloundra on Sunday morning. Police say investigations suggest a fourth person may be able to assist with inquiries into the alleged 4.30am incident at North Street. Phone crime stoppers on 1800 333 000. WIN FOR ENVIRONMENT The Sunshine Coast Council has been awarded a $464,023 grant from the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country Program for its Sunshine Coast Engagement and Critical Aquatic Habitat Project.

he Sunshine Coast is missing out on a multimillion-dollar-a-year earner while plans for a major entertainment and exhibition centre gather dust. That’s the claim of the head of Sunshine Coast Arts and Entertainment Association Inc, an organisation set up to push for the proposed centre. The Sunshine Coast Business Council has also added its voice to calls for an entertainment and exhibition centre, saying it should be incorporated into the future Maroochydore CBD. SCAEA President – former Maroochy mayor Alison Barry-Jones – says the project was first floated more than a decade ago, and would provide jobs, as well as boost the economy and tourism. But she says the project has become smothered in red tape, hampered by parochialism and politics. She has called for an independent body to come on board and plans to meet with Coast mayor Mark Jamieson next week, as well as Federal MP Alex Somlyay and an arena management company. “It must be free from political footballing,” Barry-Jones says. “We need an independent body to oversee it so we can get immediate action. We’re sick of all the talk.” A report by Ranbury Management Group,

Alison Barry-Jones funded by a $1 million Federal Government grant, recommends the facility form part of the new Maroochy Principal Activity Centre, to be built on the Horton Park Golf Course site. Sunshine Coast Council has asked its CEO to prepare funding and delivery strategies by March 31 next year. But Barry-Jones says the proposed 4000-seat facility must be designed and funded by the time developers break ground on the new PAC. She says existing venues such as the Caloundra Events Centre had been built to service individual Coast shires prior to amalgamation and a single venue to service the whole region with concerts,

competitive sport and other events was needed. “The events centre at Caloundra was built over 30 years ago to service a community of 25,000-30,000 people, not a region that is growing, and could one day be home to half a million people,” she says. The Council says it expects the facility to be operational by 2020. “We’re meeting with the mayor on August 15 and we hope that it will be a positive response,” says Barry-Jones. The SCAEA website details a lengthy list of high-profile supporters. “We see our community push as supporting Council to progress things. We want to get going with it, not wait until the golf club has relocated and the developers have gone in. “This stands to be one of the biggest moneyspinners for our region. It will not only create a wealth of culture and heritage, but it will create jobs for young people and all of that has a multiplier effect on the community,” she says. The Ranbury report found construction of the Sunshine Coast Entertainment, Convention and Exhibition centre would generate an estimated $493.9 million in construction output, almost $100 million in wages and 1889 full-time positions.

SUNSHINE COAST YOUTH PARTNERSHIP

TOURISM HANGING IN THERE WORDS Nathan Evans Direct flights between New Zealand and the Sunshine Coast and a strong drive market are helping offset a drop in domestic and international travellers to the Coast, says tourism chief Steve Cooper. The Sunshine Coast Destination Limited CEO says the Coast has felt the effects of the GFC, but marketing campaigns are helping. “There is no doubt these are the toughest of times for the tourism industry driven by the strong dollar and the two tiered economy created by the resources boom, and a fiercely competitive overseas market,” he says. But while domestic figures had declined, the segment is improving of late, says Cooper, with drive markets, and the VFR – visiting friends and relatives – segment providing a lifeline. “Looking at the March figures year on year, we’ve seen a six per cent increase in domestic visitors to the Coast, if you compare that with those days of 2007, we are still well behind those high days. On the other side, with international tourism, we have no immunity to effects of the GFC. We’ve seen a 16 per cent decline in

Steve Cooper the past year in the number of international visitors to the Sunshine Coast, but we’ve offset a lot of the impact with the stimulus provided by the direct flights from New Zealand. “It’s fantastic because we have seen the internationalisation of the airport, all the marketing and planning work we’ve done has always had as an obstacle the fact that the gateway to the Coast has been via Brisbane. What we’ve done now is open that gateway and establish the Coast as a truly mature destination,” says Cooper. The drive market is also a lifeline for the Coast, says Cooper, and includes travellers who live within a three-hour drive of Sunshine Coast Airport.

ustralia should apologise for putting Indonesian children into adult jails, the head of the Australian Human Rights Commission says after releasing a scathing report. An Age of Uncertainty, an inquiry into Indonesian children working as crew on asylum seeker boats, found that Federal Government agencies repeatedly breached international human rights laws through their treatment of Indonesian children. In the three years to late last year, 180 young Indonesians who said they were children arrived in Australia working as crew on boats. Of those, 15 young Indonesians who had been convicted as adults for people-smuggling offences were released when doubt was raised about whether they were adults when they were stopped. Another 48 who were charged as a result of wrist X-rays were later released for the same reason. Many of these young people spent more than two years in adult jails.

Catherine Branson “There is no technique available to determine precisely someone’s chronological age,” Human Rights Commission president Catherine Branson says. “But we can fairly assess there must have been a significant number of those who are under age at the time who were treated by Australia as though they were adults.” Asked if the Australian government should apologise to young people jailed in adult prisons, Branson says, “My feeling would be that they probably should. New Great Keppel Island proposal floated A $600 million low-rise, eco-tourism resort to be built over 12 years has been proposed for Queensland’s Great Keppel Island, which could be one of the biggest tourism developments in Australia. The resort proposal opens for public comment on Monday, when Queensland’s co-ordinator general will release the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney says the environmentally-friendly development will fit with the island’s unique aspects. The first stage proposes a new

250-suite hotel at Fisherman’s Beach with accompanying restaurants and conference facilities. A world-class golf course is also proposed. It would also contain a 250-berth marina at Putney Beach, including a yacht club and around 150 marine precinct apartments, a ferry terminal and staff accommodation. AAP

Officers are investigating a series of rock throwing attacks on buses near the Tallebudgera Creek. There have been 12 attacks reported in the area over the past fortnight. A spate of similar incidents on the Gold Coast over recent months has led to regular police patrols on buses and at stops. Superintendent Paul Ziebarth says endangering lives on public transport is a more serious offence than the culprits seem to realise. AAP

ervent Catholics in a crimeridden New Jersey town are flocking to what they say is the miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary’s image in a tree trunk. On Tuesday, a crowd of several dozen people stood around the tree, praying, taking photos and swapping stories of what they call a miracle. West New York, just across the Hudson from Manhattan, has been better known for crime, a depressed economy and a mayor who, along with his son, faces federal computer hacking charges. But the town’s central Bergenline Avenue is now the unlikely setting for a diminutive ginkgo biloba tree with a knot that, worshippers claim, has the form of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Catholic Church has distanced itself from the supposed miracle and there’s no shortage of scoffers in West New York, a tough place with a high Latin American immigrant population. Yet on a sweltering summer’s day, worshippers showed no sign

of losing faith. Boisterous and implacable, they vowed to stay put until the town’s troubled mayor, Felix Roque, protects the tree for good. “We want to build a monument,” says Maria Baez, 35, one of the first to announce she’d seen the Virgin at the tree and now one of the stalwarts mounting day-andnight vigils. Already the base of the tree and an adjacent fire hydrant are draped in rosaries, votive candles, flowers and pictures celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe, a major figure in Mexican Catholicism. AFP

PREVIEW Don’t feel bad that you’re watching the Olympics from the comfort of your couch, rather than standing on the podium waving a gold medal around. Those elite athletes could have an unfair advantage, according to new research.

Some people, when we measured their genes after a single bout of exercise, had an enormous response in a performance gene Nature versus nurture It seems every week another scientist or psychologist comes out with new research or the results of a study to add further fuel to the nature versus nurture fire. Everything including the propensity towards violence, drug use, depression, financial success, likelihood of getting a disease, physical co-ordination, IQ, infidelity and homosexuality has been scrutinised and analysed. So what is nature versus nurture? Basically the debate concerns the importance of a person’s innate qualities and characteristics (nature, or genes) versus his or her life experiences (nurture, or experiences) in shaping that individual’s physical qualities and behaviours. While the term ‘nurture’ historically regards the parenting of a child, the word now relates to all the environmental factors in a person’s life. So nurture includes not just your upbringing but your experiences with peer groups, the effects of media and schooling, financial position, in fact all of life’s experiences.

RUN A

re elite athletes genetically programmed to achieve? Australian researchers John Hawley and Dr Nir Eynon think this could be the case. While there is no concrete evidence that good genes separate athletes from the rest of us, research is emerging to support the idea. A study underway will examine up to 3000 athletes from Australia, Europe, Africa and America to try to identify genes associated with performance. The research, led by Eynon from Victoria University and Professor Kathryn North of the University of Sydney, will examine the entire human genome for genetic markers in elite performers, compared with the general population. The study will also compare the findings from endurance runners with sprinters. It expands on North’s discovery of a gene variant, called ACTN3, found to be present in sprinters. Despite this finding, Eynon says it is only one gene and more need to be identified to provide evidence of a strong genetic link to elite athletic performance. “We cannot say for certain that there is a genetic component that separates elite athletes from the general population,” says Eynon, who is from the university’s Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living (AECIAL). “Every study that has been done so far was on a very small number of people, which makes it very difficult to get to a solid conclusion.”

However, he says environment is also most likely a factor along with any genetic predisposition. John Hawley, from RMIT University’s exercise metabolism group at the School of Medical Sciences, agrees. Children growing up in Africa for example, run everywhere, including to school. Hawley has carried out studies measuring genes in the muscle that show people are more likely to respond to training than others. The research involved 10 untrained but otherwise healthy males who were given a single exercise before a muscle biopsy was taken to measure the gene response. “Some people, when we measured their genes after a single bout of exercise, had an enormous response in a performance gene, yet others would completely flat line,” he says. The group was then trained for 10 days and tested again. “What we found was that the first bout of exercise … was very predictive of how they responded to the training program,” Hawley says. “We’re actually measuring the genes in the muscle and we are finding that there are responders and non-responders, even though you might give them the same training program. “That has to be down to genetics,” he says. “Where we are heading from this athletically is the prediction of athletic performance from a single genetic test. “We’re not there yet, but it’s coming.” AAP

THE SOCIALYMPICS PREVIEW With more than 10,500 Olympians participating and about 14 million global followers, social media use at the London 2012 Olympic Games is expected to exceed that of any sporting event in history. WORDS Lisa Harrison Being aware of current social media trends, Channel Nine is conducting an ambitious and ground-breaking research study into the broadcast of

the Games across traditional and social media formats. Nine is aware it must tailor its broadcast to compete with or complement new media and has engaged Nielsen to complete the study. The research will fuse various facets of Nine’s Olympic coverage with buying rituals, wider consumer attitudes and product consumption. Other phases of the research study include an extensive measure of ‘buzz’ and social media leading up to and during Nine’s broadcast, a daily touch points survey where viewers will be asked to record their daily activity of media consumption inside and outside the home, and a cross platform study designed to evaluate the effectiveness of advertisements and promotions. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is also capitalising on social media at the London Games as relative newcomers to the scene. This new openness is in contrast to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, where the IOC did not use social media at all. The Internet infrastructure at the

] THE WEEK THAT WAS

GETTING YOUR HEAD AROUND INFLATION

Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

Much chatter over the past couple of quarters has related to quantitative easing in the US and what impact it will have on inflation. Inflation is the rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services is rising, and, subsequently, purchasing power falling. When the rate of inflation is high, the cost of living rises rapidly and goods and services become unaffordable. The general approach used by central banks to reduce inflation is to increase interest rates. One cause of inflation historically has been the printing of

money by central banks. The effect of printing money is an increased money supply. When more money becomes available to people or corporations, they are generally willing to pay more for goods and services. This leads to an increase in the price for goods and services and thus, inflation. So, why have we not seen inflation take hold, even though large amounts of money have been printed by the US Federal Reserve? The answers are numerous and can be summarised as follows: • Firstly, the money received by banks is being hoarded. In fact, in some cases it is being deposited back with the central bank. Additionally, banks still don’t have confidence in those that want to borrow and consumers don’t want debt. Finally, with Basel III being implemented, banks have to increase their capital requirements anyway.

the stylish way to double your storage

*

25% OFF BE QUICK! ONLY DURING AUGUST

• Secondly, while printing money, governments are not using it in such a way that is inflationary. In summary, they are buying assets, namely their own bonds. They are simply swapping one form of debt for another. So they are buying bonds with the cash they print, but are withdrawing bonds from the market, thereby cancelling out the inflationary effect. • Bringing our discussion of inflation back to Australia, we recently witnessed an annualised consumer price index reading of 1.2 per cent. This is well below the Reserve Bank’s target and could lead to further interest rate cuts with a view to stimulating inflation and activity. It’s never straightforward. Today, it encompasses TV shows, an app, e-books and cookware and ambassadorships. Q. What did winning the award mean to you? A. It was a huge honour for myself and my team to be recognised by such a prestigious organisation, amongst such talented peers. Q. How has it helped your business and profile? A. It has provided opportunities where I least expected them. I attached the Outstanding Business Woman of the Year to my email signature, my publisher in the US saw it, and as a result invested in a high-end PR Agency in Manhattan, realising that my story was about more than just a cookbook.

Q. What does the future hold? A. The future for 4 Ingredients is very exciting. I have a small but loyal team and together we are working on initiatives to embrace our changing industry, to adopt strategies that keep us at the forefront and leaders in our market. We have a known and trusted brand in both the marketplace and in Australian media, we focus on ways to nurture that, and continue to align with powerful partners to ensure good, solid growth year on year. Q. Any words of advice for budding SCBW and this year’s nominees? A. Focus on what you want to achieve, have a business plan, be resilient and persistent, and remember successful business is all about successful relationships. On behalf of myself and the 4 Ingredients team, I would like to extend a sincere congratulations to this year’s finalists.

Frock up for Young Professional’s Ball In support of the Sunshine Coast Youth Partnership, the inaugural Young Professional’s Spring Charity Ball will be held on Saturday, September 1 at Garry Crick Prestige on Maroochydore Boulevard. The ball will mark the official launch of the Young Professional’s Network, a project that aims to connect and inspire young professionals in our community who are fast becoming our leaders of tomorrow. The network is the work of marketing and PR professional Megan Meineke, who says it will focus on encouraging young people to look for opportunities locally and start building mutually beneficial and strong working relationships with one another in a friendly environment. “I strongly believe there is a large pool of talented young people on the Sunshine Coast and through this network, aim to provide them with a number of opportunities to get together, meet and share their ideas for the benefit of the region in future years to come,” Meineke says. “Through this network, we also aim to enable our young MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. SALLY SURE TO SOAR ON BIGGEST STAGE ATHLETICS

S

ally Pearson will top the bill for Australia in the biggest show of the London Olympics. Mitchell Watt and Steve Hooker also provide plenty of star power. But the overall success or otherwise of the 55-strong track and field team will probably come down to the support cast. It’s a team bursting at the seams with walkers – a technical discipline that has provided a reliable source of medals for Australia for more than two decades. It’s a team including eight throwers – the most since Sydney in 2000. And it’s a team well off for distance runners, many of them coached or managed by Nic Bideau, who almost regards the English capital as a second home. Athletics Australia high performance manager Eric Hollingsworth has long flagged an ambitious target of six medals in London – a figure not achieved by Australia at Olympic or world championships level since Mexico City in 1968. Pearson, the reigning IAAF female world athlete of the year, will be a deserving favourite to add the

Hurdler Sally Pearson leads the athletics team. 100m hurdles Olympic gold medal to the world championships title she won in 12.28 seconds last year in South Korea. The controversial world record of 12.21 set in 1988 by Bulgarian Yordanka Donkova is also within reach of the fiercely competitive Queenslander. Watt has made a more low-key start to 2012, but was an encouraging winner of the long jump at the recent Diamond League meet in New York. Hooker’s medal prospects in the pole vault are harder to gauge.

PHOTO: AAP

If the six-medal tally is to be achieved, there will have to be plenty of podium support for the big names. Hopes are again high for Jared Tallent, who won medals in the 20km and 50km walks in Beijing. Australia looks particularly strong in the gruelling 50km event, where Tallent will be joined by 2007 world champ Nathan Deakes and perennial top-10 finisher Luke Adams. The sporting spotlight Down Under rarely falls on the throwing events, a situation that changed

when then 21-year-old Dani Samuels claimed a stunning victory in the discus at the 2009 world championships in Berlin. While her event is stronger this time around, Samuels cannot be discounted. Fellow discus thrower Benn Harradine and javelin duo Jarrod Bannister and Kim Mickle also have the capacity to build on top-seven finishes from the 2011 world championships. Bideau has played a key role in making sure Australia will be well-represented in most of the distance events. Jeff Riseley must decide whether to focus on the 800m or 1500m, while training partner Ryan Gregson is already the fastest Australian ever for the metric mile. For many years, Bideau and his squad have based themselves in London for the northern hemisphere summer. “You know the weather, you know the environment, you understand the culture of the place, you get a feel for it,” he says. “Everyone runs better when they’re in a place where they’re happy and relaxed. “I think it’s going to be a great Olympics for Australian athletes because of that.” AAP

KOOKABURRAS GO FOR GOLD HOCKEY

T

he Kookaburras know nearly four years of world domination will be lost on the public if Australia’s men’s hockey team doesn’t win the gold medal most expect. In the period since the Beijing Olympics, the Kookaburras have become the nation’s most successful national sporting team. They have won a World Cup,

Jamie Dwyer

Commonwealth Games gold, three of their four successive Champions Trophies and reset the bar for men’s hockey. Yet the casual observer’s last glimpse of their work would have been a shock semi-final loss to Spain in Beijing in 2008, followed by a bronze medal when gold loomed large. The London Olympics offer a chance for probably the greatest team in the sport’s history to put an exclam exclamation mark on their achiev achievements. Co Co-captain Mark Knowles admits the public perception of this Kooka Kookaburras side will be shaped by what tthey do in London. “Fr “From the outside, people will ex expect quite a lot, but the one tthing we have learned about ourselves in this period of ttime is that if we play at our best best, we are very hard to beat,” Know Knowles says. Kn Knowles’ fellow co-captain Jamie Dwyer is a five-time world player of the ye year and reigning award holder. And, aaccording to Knowles, a great strengt strength is that under coach Ric Charlesworth, the Kookaburras have Charle grown deeper as well as better. The Kookaburras should progress Th from ttheir group to the medal rounds with little fuss, though their Beijing conquerors Spain loom in A. AAP Pool A

BOOMERS, OPALS HURT BY INJURIES BASKETBALL

A

ustralia’s basketballers need the stars to align to win the medals they crave at the London Olympics. Instead, their stars are falling before a ball is bounced. Both the Opals – among the gold medal favourites in women’s basketball – and minor medal hopefuls the Boomers have lost key players for London through injury. NBA star Andrew Bogut won’t suit up for Australia’s men in London as he recovers from ankle surgery. The Opals have lost world women’s basketball’s form player Penny Taylor to a serious knee injury. Strange as it would seem, Bogut’s loss may be easier to cover. Despite his NBA stardom and the fact he is one of the world’s best centres, Australia’s stocks of quality big men have never been deeper. David Andersen is Bogut’s likely starting-five replacement and has played successfully in Europe and at two Olympics. Emerging centres Aleks Maric

David Andersen and Aron Baynes are both proven and capable at international level. Taylor’s demise is more problematic for an Opals team who will need everything to go right to unseat the sport’s dominant nation, the United States. The Opals were preparing to build their plays around Taylor and fellow superstar Lauren Jackson in London. Those who can step up to cover Taylor’s absence – such as WNBA player Jenna O’Hea – are relatively unproven internationally though talented enough to do so. AAP

SMOOTH SAILING TOWARDS MEDALS SAILING

A

ustralia’s Olympic sailors are expected to win a record medal haul at the London Games and should confirm themselves as a golden generation of champions. Key to their chances are three crews who’ve been virtually unbeatable over the past 12 months, including on the Games course at Weymouth. Standing in their way are British crews with a deep understanding of local conditions, backed by boisterous home support. Among those aiming to bash the Poms is Tom Slingsby, who won his fifth Laser world title in May and capped an extraordinarily dominant year by winning his fifth regatta at Weymouth. He had a shock 22nd-placed finish at the 2008 Games but loves the strong winds in southern England. Slingsby has a fierce rivalry with

Tom Slingsby Team GBR’s Paul Goodison and their clashes should be dramatic. World 49er skiff champions Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen are unbeaten at Weymouth over four regattas. Outteridge pinpointed Team GBR’s Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes as their chief rivals. “We’ve been enemies with the Brits from day one, so why stop now?” he says. The 26-year-old, who broke his back in a 2005 car crash, teamed up with childhood friend Jensen after heartbreak in Beijing. Outteridge capsized with former crewmate Ben Austin just 100m from the finish line and missed out on certain gold. World champion 470 sailors Malcolm Page and Mathew Belcher are Australia’s third red-hot hope. AAP

A TEMPTING TASTE OF SPAIN IN COTTON TREE WORDS Leisa Toomey

I

don’t know about you, but this weather makes me hungry. OK, it’s not just the weather that makes me hungry – the Sunny Coast has so much going for it that any time of year is a good time to get out and enjoy the food on offer in the region. So one cold, wet evening my dining partner and I headed off to ba Vigo, in the now funky Cotton Tree precinct. It’s a surprise package, serving delicious Spanish fare in a relaxed environment, and the best thing is at night the mood lighting is particularly flattering – just the way we ladies like it! You can choose a cosy spot inside or dine alfresco. Given the weather, we opted to stay indoors and, once seated, got down to business. The wine list offered quite a variety, with a great selection of Spanish and Australian wines to choose from. We went for a crispy white with the great name of Condes de Albarei Albarino, from the Rias Baixas coastal region of southern Spain. Just one tip: you may find the menu difficult to pronounce, unless you’re fluent in Spanish, so you might have to point at the menu when it comes time to order – don’t worry, the wait staff are used to this. I jumped on a smooth red from northern Spain, Sierra Cantabria Cosecha Tempranillo, La Rioja, which presented with a deep, almost chocolate colour, with notes of

[ 32 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ AUG UST 3, 2012

32.indd 1

cinnamon and orange – truly delectable. Overall, the wine selection is well thoughtout, priced at around $40 to $50 a bottle. They sell a limited but perfectly respectable offering of champagnes, but it was the beer selection that caught our eye with some great imported drops like Estrella Gallicia lager. But why should we stop there? We moved onto a 2009 Bodegas San Alejandro ‘Evodia’ Garnacha D.O. Calatayud, a full-bodied red that was just sublime, a perfect accompaniment to our mains (segundo plato). The aromas from the kitchen were worth bottling. Thankfully, the tapas arrived quickly – Fraser Coast prawns, scallops with grilled chorizo and sweet local chillies with queso iberico (a hard cheese from central Spain). All three dishes offered something different, and the tapas menu is so inviting you could dine out on that alone. The cost is reasonable at $13 to $14 a plate. The flavours of the scallops and chorizo were perfect companions and the chillies offered just the right amount of ‘hotness’. Smashing. The segundo plato is a mixture of good fare, but do yourself a favour and have a pizza. We didn’t, and as plate after plate of pizza left the kitchen, we experienced a touch of food envy. Still, we were more than satisfied with our crispy skin pan-fried barramundi and paprika

spiced pork fillet with lemon parsley and potato mash/green beans and salsa pimiento. The fish portion was a generous cut of the freshest fish with a mix of tasty greens. We shared tastings and “ooed” and “ahhed” over the tender pork fillet. At $34 a main, I thought it was really great value. And then came my favourite part – dessert! Starting at $12 each, they were great value with plenty of dishes to choose from, such as lemon and lime curd tart with double cream and toasted almonds. We settled on the trio of homemade ice-creams, which got the big thumbs up. The taste was tantalising, with a gentle swirl of mixed fresh fruit and nuts and a rich, smooth taste. With a name like Pedro Xeminez ‘Alvear’ 1927 ‘dulce viejo’, we had to try the sherry, and combined with good solid long blacks, it was a very sweet and perfect finish to the dining experience. The wait staff are delightful at ba Vigo, the presentation is minimalist and effective, and the well-travelled owners, Nick and Louise Belton, have applied their extensive knowledge in creating this great dining experience. The perfect slice of Spain in Cotton Tree. Excelente! Leisa Toomey is a partner at Schultz Toomey O’Brien Lawyers and a lover of fine food and wine. This restaurant was selected at random and the bill was paid for by the writer.

Nathan says

ELITE, STYLISH AND SPORTY This week, Jemma and Nathan bent the rules and for something different tested a pre-loved Mercedes. This particular car, available at Garry Crick Mercedes, is a CLC-200. If you like the sound of this review get in quick because this fully optioned car is for sale for just under $40,000. The equivalent new vehicle, the C-250 coupé is available for around $80,000. JEMMA: She’s low, she’s very low, but not without room in the back. NATHAN: It’s a nice glove box, fabric lined, deep and with a separate shelf. J: I’m a bit nervous about this one. (Jemma pulls away from the kerb.) J: Oooh, it’s nice, Nath. N: I’m impressed with the quality of leather used in the two-tone seats. J: It’s firm but has a real smoothness to it. It’s responsive; you don’t have to work hard to tell it what to do. (Satellite navigation begins announcing road directions.) J: I like the Pommy voice, I prefer that to an American one.

SAT NAV: Take the next exit. N: I’m going to name her Stephanie. She sounds like a Stephanie. J: Let’s test the acceleration. (Jemma pulls over and then accelerates back to 100 kilometres per hour.) J: Nice! N: It’s a very willing engine. You almost redlined it. J: The speedo goes up to 260 kilometres per hour, so the needle is only at 80 degrees on the dial when you are doing 100, so I’d imagine it is easy to speed. J: I still can’t get over how roomy it is. You could comfortably accommodate two adults in the back and not feel squishy. N: Well, you are the right demographic for this car, I feel. J: A professional woman with a child? N: Yes. J: It feels very driveable. N: It should – it’s a Merc. J: Yes, but even though it’s a Merc it doesn’t feel precious. I mean, I’m not frightened to drive it or get it dirty. If

[ 36 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ AUG UST 3, 2012

I was in the market for a new car and had some more cash than I do, I’d seriously look at buying this car. (Jemma turns into a narrow service road and makes a U-turn.) N: It has an incredibly tight turning circle. That’s impressive. J: I don’t want to give you a drive, I like it too much. I’m going to hit up the MWP publishers for a pay rise. J: If you want a zippy car that is a bit special and you don’t mind having

a two-door, then this is certainly the car for you. I wonder if the blokes at Garry Crick will do me a deal. (Jemma points out the central locking button on the dash.) N: It’s only a two-door, so you don’t really need to worry about kids falling out of the back. J: No, but as a woman driving on her own at night, I’d very much like the safety and security of this feature. continued over>

< from previous page J: This car would be fine if you have kids. I said I’d never go back to a two-door, but this car could change my mind. (Jemma slips into the passenger seat.) J: Love the handy pocket on the centre console on the passenger side. And there’s a light on the visor mirror. It’s official: I am in love. N: There is a good definite clunk when you put it in gear, very reassuring, and the side mirrors fold in electronically. J: Handy for city parking. N: Visibility is good. And I have always wanted a car with a sun roof. The indicator is loud which is great, you’ll never accidentally leave it on while singing along to the radio. (Nathan puts his foot down as we hit the highway.) N: It has some serious pick-up. I see what you mean though, Jemma. It is easy to speed as 100 is at 10 o’clock on the dial. Effortless acceleration. J: The sporty two-tone seats are growing on me, Nathan. N: Yes the interior smacks of quality. Auto headlights, which is good and lots of levers on the steering wheel.

MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU

37.indd 1

Mercedes Benz CLC-200 J: Yes, the levers were overwhelming at first, but I guess you get used to all the bells and whistles. N: It feels like a smallish car, very zippy. But it is roomy. Very satisfying acceleration. Steering is precise, but nimble. J: Nimble but reassuringly solid. N: The wheel spins freely at a standstill, but you can’t really hear the power-steering labouring at all. With the small back window, visibility could be a problem. But it is ever so smooth and quiet. It’s very much a car that would appeal to women, I reckon. It’s like a fashionable, luxury accessory. J: A status symbol? N: Yes, there is that elite appeal

about driving a Mercedes. J: Your favourite bits about this car? N: The sunroof, acceleration, the suspension and the steering– it’s easy, you don’t have to work the wheel, to borrow your phrase. The car tempts you to put your foot down. It wills you to rev and pushes you back in the seat as you give it more gas. J: All that from, what did you call it, a “ladies car”? N: Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure their boyfriends will be only too happy to borrow it. J: Well, what I love about this car is… N: I thought you were simply in love with it generally. I’ll leave you alone with it, if you’d like. J: Would you? Anyway, I love that it’s zippy without feeling flimsy. I really like the size. And all the extra bits, even though I don’t know how to use them. Well, we’re almost back at the office. N: Yeah but I don’t want to go back just yet. J: Looks like you’re in love too. But hey, I saw her first. MWP wishes to thank Garry Crick Mercedes for supplying the test car.

] Dynamic new look for Kia’s popular Cerato

BMW GETS ADVENTUROUS

B

MW is venturing into a new vehicle segment with the Australian launch of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé. Following the introduction of the convertible and coupe BMW 6 Series models, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé is the third model in the BMW 6 Series line-up and the brand’s first four-door coupe. BMW says the new model is the “true embodiment of sportiness, comfort, luxury and innovation”. “The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé integrates the stand-out looks and dynamics of a coupé into a fresh new model with a fascinating character all

of its own. The hallmark proportions of a BMW are reflected in an unusually low-slung, sporty package given the car’s four-door construction,” a spokesman says. The straight six-cylinder petrol engine features BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, High-Precision Injection and VALVETRONIC combined with Double VANOS. BMW says there is a wide range of premium standard equipment, including drive enhancing features. The all-new 640i Gran Coupé will be in Australian showrooms from July priced from $184,800 (manufacturer’s list price).

Kia Motors will introduce the next generation Cerato compact sedan towards the end of this year in its home market of Korea under a new name – ‘K3’. The K3 name will apply to the Korean domestic market only alongside the K5, K7 and K9. The new model will continue to be badged Cerato (or Forte) in overseas markets. The current Cerato was Kia’s global best-seller in 2011 with more than 445,000 examples sold. “The Cerato is, and will continue to be, a very important model in the Australian line-up,” says Kia Motors Australia chief operating officer Tony Barlow. “We are certainly looking forward to the new generation which clearly continues Kia’s dramatic styling progression.”

Honda CR-Z wins 2012 Design Award The Honda CR-Z has won a 2012 Design Award in the Automotive and Transport category of the Australian International Design Awards, which are highly respected within the design industry. At a ceremony in Sydney last week, Honda Australia’s managing director and CEO Satoshi Matsuzawa and principal adviser Lindsay Smalley accepted the award on behalf of Honda Australia.

“It is a great honour to receive an award of this calibre for the CR-Z. We are very proud to add another important and prominent award to our trophy cabinet,” Smalley said.

READY, SET,

ocal real estate agents are reporting that vendors who get the price right on their properties are selling successfully, but Sunshine Coast buyers are as savvy as ever and want real bang for their buck. As a vendor, it’s more important than ever to market your property as effectively as you can. So apart from pricing it right, how do you make sure your property stands out from the crowd? What might be required is spending a little bit of cash. But ‘little’ is the operative word here. If you’re planning to move out of the home, there is no point spending thousands on new light fittings or expensive tiles. And while you might think that installing a new kitchen or adding a pricey deck off the back will bring in more buyers, think again. In this market, it is too easy to overcapitalise. Ask your agent for advice on your individual needs but remember there are probably some really simple – and inexpensive – ways to add value to your home and ensure it appeals to as many buyers as possible. First things first – get the outside looking tip-top. The first thing buyers see is the entrance and if they don’t like it, they won’t bother getting out of the car for the open home. Take a critical look at your driveway, front lawn, garage door and entrance. Would you buy this house? Get a gardener in to get the lawn up to scratch and trim back bushes and trees. Planting a few flowers along the path might be just the trick. Clean the paths with a high-pressure hose, clean away cobwebs under the eaves and give the front door a quick coat of paint if it needs it. And remove the toys from the front lawn – you might be used to tripping over bikes when you get home every day but your potential buyers won’t appreciate it.

Once inside the home remove all clutter. That means you might have to hire a storage shed for the time the home is on the market, but it will be worth it. Nothing is more distracting to potential buyers than knick-knacks on every surface, a room that is overfurnished, kitchen benches that can’t be seen for appliances and fridge doors overflowing with photos, notes and kids’ drawings. Give the walls a good clean and paint if necessary, ensure curtains are dust free and invest in a carpet clean. Fix leaky taps and take a walk around each room. You might need to rearrange furniture to make it easier to move around the space. On the day of the open home, open all the curtains and turn on the lights to make each room as light and airy as possible. Ask a neighbour to mind the pets, while you set the dinner table with a simple yet elegant setting. Turn off the TV and pop on some soothing background music, light a scented candle and turn on the heating if it’s winter or fans in summer, so the temperature is comfortable. Then make yourself scarce – your agent should be able to answer any questions buyers have so you don’t need to be there.

What do you think?

How a property is presented can make a big difference to how many people are interested in the property and what they are willing to offer. I cannot emphasise enough how much difference it makes if the property is presented to its maximum. It doesn’t mean you have to go to the expense of buying or hiring new furniture, or having the home renovated, but spring cleaning and freshening things up make a big difference. Up there on my list are making sure all maintenance issues are attended to. Having ‘broken’ items around the home takes the buyers’ focus from the attributes and positives of the home to the negatives, and they start calculating cost and time. They may even dismiss the home altogether. But it doesn’t mean you have to go to a huge expense; sometimes even just cleaning walls and high-pressure cleaning outside is all you need to do. Replace rusty fan blades or anything else that catches the eye in a negative way. The other biggie is DE-CLUTTER! Family photos, clutter on benchtops in the kitchen and bathrooms once removed makes the home much more appealing. Karen Jones, Next Property Group

Getting your presentation right is the key. Buyers form their impressions on a property within the first 30 seconds of viewing. So therefore, presentation is the most important ingredient. Presentation includes washing down the house, cleaning driveways, and cleaning and clearing all internal areas of junk. Also, clean windows, walls and carpets and add fresh flowers. Peter Hill, Belle Property Buderim

You don’t have to spend big to make your home more saleable. My top picks are: replace the old door knobs and handles with new ones, replace the tap fittings and towel rails in the bathroom, and replace light fittings and clean the ceiling fans. If fans show any sign of rusting, replace them. You can usually do all this for less than $1000 and make your home much more appealing to the buyers. Trevor Martin, Waterfront Agents

m T L r Y

This is when you actually need to sweat the small stuff. Let go of your defence mechanisms, and spend at least an hour with your agent to go through all the finer details of presentation to remove clutter. This may involve rearranging or removing furniture to increase desirability of your property before the professional photos are done, and then keeping it that way for every open and inspection throughout the campaign. Listen to your agent. Small things that you might think are not noticeable can add up to a presentation disaster. Petro Geyl, RealWay Caloundra

AUSMAR HOMES WINS AGAIN An innovative client-focused approach has paid off for Ausmar Homes.

A

usmar Homes took home two awards at the Master Builders Sunshine Coast Housing & Construction Awards held last week. It’s just the latest of 12 MBA gongs the Cooroy-based building company has won in the past six years. The company won Display Home of the Year (up to $275,000) and Low-Rise

Multi-Residential Housing Project of the Year (townhouse category). Ausmar director, Tim Hendy says the team looks forward to competing further in the Master Builders Awards on a state and potentially national level in the months ahead. “It’s thanks to the great team we have at Ausmar Homes that we are able to build award-winning homes, as well as our commitment to using local tradies and suppliers,” he says. “While the industry is doing it fairly tough, initiatives like our no cost and obligation-free design service has made it possible for people to start planning their homes and feel confident about who they are working [with].”

AGENTS GO TECHY House hunters will probably have noticed the use of QR codes increasing in real estate advertising and signage. The distinctive barcode is being embraced by businesses as part of their marketing strategies, and real estate agents particularly have taken to the codes. If you haven’t tried using one, you simply download a QR code-reading app onto your smartphone, hover your phone over the QR code, and up pops a website with all relevant details about the property. John Peopall from Seaside Real Estate has a QR code on his business card and gets asked what these “funny things” are all the time. John is also having them printed on his property management team’s cards. Those codes will bring up Seaside’s rental ntal stock list. “On my card it goes to o selected listed properties I have.. One we have on the local map we give out – that takes people to our latest listings.”

Jason Andrew auctioneer Gordon Macdonald took centre stage on the evening, while his colleague Matthew Condon was on hand to assist RealWay agents with negotiations from more than five registered bidders. The agency’s hinterland specialists, Petro Geyl and Rene Poulos, marketed seven of the properties, including an original 1946 worker’s cottage at Maleny, which attracted the opening bid and was the most hotly contested property of the evening. Two buyers declared bids on the cottage before moving into post-auction negotiations. Ide says another two properties are also under negotiation, and the agency was pleased to secure so many properties for its debut in-room event. “The process worked well, and being our first event we were very happy with the result,” he says. “We are gearing up for our next one, which will be bigger and better.” Full results from the event are listed above.

NORTHEAST ASPECT WITH A MASSIVE 27.8M WATERFRONT The sellers of this gorgeous lowset waterfront home have enjoyed living in their property for the past 10 years, but have decided it’s me to scale down and experience a different lifestyle. The home is located, without a doubt, in one of the most sought a er addresses in Minyama Waters. Island Court is a small ‘no-through traffic’ court, featuring a large park in the centre, is an ideal playground for kids and doubles as a golf prac ce area for the adult kids as well. The home is very private and the owners have styled their property on a ‘Resort Style’ way of living, and certainly achieved this. All living area’s open up to the waterfront via large bi-fold doors enhancing the prac cality of the property, at the same me merging the indoors with the outdoors. It is such a flowing property and beau fully presented. Posi oned on a large 995m2 area, the home sprawls out over one level without compromising on the most important aspect of the property – the outdoors! The property features a spa, large lagoon style inground pool with a gazebo on the water’s edge and a huge boardwalk , deck area and undercover, all-weather living area, ideal for outdoor entertaining. For the boa es there’s a large 11 metre pontoon and with the wide waterfront, you can easily accommodate a large vessel.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Has your cash flow been erratic lately? With lucky Venus and Jupiter in your money zone, look for positive solutions. If you develop a second stream of income, you’ll feel more secure.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 With Venus in your sign – until August 7 – it’s time to bring more beauty into your life. When it comes to others, take the time to look beneath the surface – who knows what you may find?

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Expect to experience fluctuating moods but it’s nothing you can’t handle. The more you connect with loved ones on a deep level, the better the weekend will be.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 The Piscean moon boosts your artistic side, so find a creative project. Group activities are also favoured, as you combine talents for a positive outcome.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 A friend or family member may be drawn to you for emotional comfort and practical support. You’re in the mood to listen, and can offer advice that is both sensitive and sensible.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Family relationships will benefit from Saturday’s positive moon/Pluto aspects. Use your energy and enthusiasm to boost the spirits of a loved one who is feeling down-in-the-dumps.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Scorpios are intuitive souls. This weekend you’re very tuned in to the energy around you, and will pick up on the moods of others. So surround yourself with positive people and places.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Teamwork and networking will get you where you want to go. Look for a person you can collaborate with, on a project close to your heart. Passion and enthusiasm will win others over.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 The more proactive you are at home and work, the better you’ll feel. A positive attitude clears the financial cobwebs, as you look for long-term answers to short-term money problems.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 If you jump to hasty, half-baked conclusions this weekend, then you’ll encounter problems. Attached Aquarians – don’t wait for your partner to fix the relationship. It takes two.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Communication and creativity are highlighted as your intuition kicks in, and you pick up on the feelings and moods of others. Spend time with friends who boost your confidence.
