he playground pecking order has always been, and still is, a complicated structure. The British class system in Victorian England has nothing on children all over the world, who, when thrown together in large numbers, immediately organise themselves into sub-groups – the haves and have-nots, the wannabes and never-will-bes. There have always been the cool kids and bookish types, sporty achievers, outcasts, and the bullies. I can remember being teased at school – no doubt all adults have stories of being picked on to varying degrees – but I can’t say I was ever really bullied. I wish I could say the same for my little sister and my niece – both have been victims of the heartless actions of their peers. And it might be that we’re just more

] aware of it, but it seems the problem is getting worse. Technology is making bullies out of children who might not otherwise have been and is bringing bullying out of the playground, out of school hours, and into the home 24/7. This week Nathan Evans investigates the issue, and meets some inspiring people who are doing something about it. That story is on page 6. On a lighter note, Jarna Baudinette has been chatting to some Sunshine Coast real estate agents who remember the ‘good old days’ of selling property. We love bringing your history stories – that one is over in MPP on page 38. In fashion on page 26 we have some pieces that will inspire you to travel, and in motoring Nathan and I have been testing out a zippy new Honda. Head to page 33 for that one and more.

PREVIEW Childhood bullying has shifted online, with one in four incidents now taking place in the cybersphere. But a few dedicated locals are making a stand to end cyberbulling, which can have devastating effects on our young people. WORDS Nathan Evans IMAGE Ben Vos

n February 5, 2009 Allem Halkic jumped from Melbourne’s Westgate Bridge. The 17-yearold had been threatened and abused over the internet and via text messages before his suicide, which occurred shortly before dawn on the edge of a major freeway. His tormentor, a former friend, later avoided jail for his actions in Australia’s first prosecution for cyberbullying, telling the court he was sorry; that he missed his mate and that he “did not realise the effect of my words”. Sadly, for Allem it is too late, but for the one in six students bullied weekly in Australia, there is hope of intervention. Allem’s story shows the potentially fatal consequences of bullying and the more recent phenomenon, cyberbullying. His story will feature in a new film by Peregian-based filmmaker Evette Henderson, aimed at exposing the enormity of the bullying problem to force positive change for victims. It’s Henderson’s second film on the subject – she produced an eight-minute documentary starring veteran actor John Jarratt in 2010. Copies of that film, Cyber Sin, in which Jarratt plays the distraught father of a bullied teen who takes her own life, have been in high demand, in what Henderson hopes is a sign society is realising the implications of technology on bullying. “For me this was about getting the message out there, and it’s incredible how well it has been received,” she says.

“It’s up to schools whether they pursue the issue. But we’re really lucky that we have had a stack of schools buy the DVD, but it is still available for free online to download and always will be as, for us, this is about getting the message across to as many people as possible to see.” For Jarratt, suicide is an issue close to home. He tells MWP he is only too happy to assist with a project that could potentially save a life from bullying. “I’m a father of six children and I have a cousin who lost a kid to suicide, it’s such a tremendous waste of life and I will do anything I can to prevent young people killing themselves,” says Jarratt. “You have to understand that emotions run amazingly high when you’re 15, 16 and 17. You’re turning from a child into an adult and that can be kind of overwhelming in itself. “At that age, something as simple as breaking up with your girlfriend can send you to the depths of hell, and if someone of that age is just copping it all the time, emotionally it’s like 10 times stronger than when you’re an adult and you cop a few kicks up the arse,” says Jarratt. He hopes Cyber Sin and productions like it fill a gap in the school curriculum. “Kids get taught in schools how to read and write and arithmetic – all the cerebral stuff – but no one teaches them how to live – life’s lessons, emotional lessons,” he says. perpetrators to face up to the impact their actions have. Henderson has worked with Allem’s parents, Ali and Dina, on the project. “The focus is on the consequences of what happens. The thing is young people know cyberbullying can have a huge effect and not just in school, rather than show young people steps a bully takes it shows the consequences to really make young people realise the impact they can have if they press send,” says Henderson. “It’s the whole sliding doors phenomenon, we’re hoping to trigger a consciousness to encourage more responsibility, but parents have to be somewhat accountable as well. If parents allow a PC in their kid’s bedroom, they need to be monitoring it.” Forcing cyberbullies to front up to the consequences of their actions is key to reforming them, says University of the Sunshine Coast lecturer in psychology Dr Rachael Sharman. “If you walk up to someone and bully them – hit them or say nasty things to them – you are immediately faced with their reaction – their facial expression, maybe even tears – and that is something which can hopefully result in some sort of empathy or sympathy from the bully,” says Sharman. “It’s because we’re removed from the impact of the behaviour and don’t see the impact that we are less likely to think about the consequences – that’s the issue with technology. “What needs to be imparted to the teenager is that their actions have a serious impact. That’s the difficult part, but that’s what technology has done to the bully, it’s made them faceless, and that’s a problem.” Federal schools minister Peter Garrett last week announced $4 million in federal funding for new online tools to tackle school bullying, including online information for parents dealing with bullying, a training module for teachers and help for student support staff. This is a positive step. But schools need to do more, says Sharman, with greater help for bullying victims, not only to help them come forward but also to better deal with bullying. “Bullied teens can get frightened about reporting bullying because they’re convinced it will get worse and unfortunately that can happen. It needs a really strong social support system. Victims need to know that if they report it, it will be dealt with and the problem will not escalate. It’s fair to say that’s not always the case. “I’ve seen schools that deal with these issues well, and I’ve seen schools just brush it off. Schools need to bring the bully in and tell them they are aware of what they’ve been doing and that they are watching them. It’s not rocket science, yet often schools just do not do that. “Sometimes it gets worse for a victim after they come forward, and so they won’t come forward again.” Bullying is a complex issue, says Sharman. “With bullying, the victims are not random,” she says. “People are picked on because of certain characteristics – one may be low social skills, for example, they don’t know how to respond to the bully. “Children who are struggling with social skills tend to be anxious. Victims respond in a way that [conveys] distress, which is what the bully wants. If the victim was somewhat of a smooth talker they can turn it back on a bully or make a joke of it, and so the bully doesn’t get the reaction they want and they move on. If the next person bursts into tears then they’ve got their reaction,” she says The problem can be tackled both by empowering the victims with social skills and by targeting the bully. The long-term implications of bullying left uncorrected – for both the bully and victim – are great, says Sharman.

Children are less likely to tell a parent they are being cyberbullied because of a fear their technology will be taken away. A recent survey found

Australia is the worst place for bullying over social networks. Cyberbullies can send

threatening messages via email, Facebook, Twitter, SMS or any social network site. They can also post

altered images of people for ridicule. As cyberbullying involves a wide audience,

victims may get little or no respite.

John Jarratt “For victims, what we do see with long-term repeat bullying is an association with anxiety and depression later on. Part of the issue is that they may have been inclined that way in the first place, you can’t tease the chicken and the egg out of it, but certainly it will make those tendencies worse,” says Sharman. “If we look at the older bully, the repeat offender who has not responded to intervention efforts, that person is someone we need to watch and monitor. They are at risk of anti-social behaviour and criminal activity later on. That association is quite clear. “What we are talking about here are the repeat offenders – people who don’t respond to intervention or the chat from a teacher. We do know that with the bully it can be, in young children, an expression of things going on at home. There are family factors, for example the father could be a bully or violent. Or the child could be going through a tough time like a divorce. “With older kids we are looking at an association with anti-social tendencies, particularly if they are a repeat offender. With older teenagers the problems need some assistance and they need to be watched.” Garrett says statistics show one in six students are bullied weekly and one in five fall victim to cyberbullies. There is no shortage of statistics. The launch of the national BackMeUp campaign in June heard one in 10 Australian children had been bullied online, with a quarter of those being cyberbullied once every few weeks. That campaign, an initiative of The Australian Human Rights Commission, is aimed at targeting online bullying in Australia. Speaking to students at the launch, bullying expert Donna Cross likened cyberbullying to “bullying on steroids”, as reported by AAP. On June 1, primary schools across Australia celebrated National Buddy Day – an initiative that hopes to empower children to look out for their friends. Developed by NAB and the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, the campaign has former Miss Universe Australia Jesinta Campbell – who overcame bullying as a child – as its ambassador. <from previous page A community effort in NSW is attempting to curb schoolyard bullying by denying offenders employment. Any person aged under 22 seeking a job at a registered club will require a verbal referee check from their high school. If the school confirms the student was involved in bullying, they’ll be overlooked for employment. “This program forces students to think about the effect their bullying will have on their own career, which for many is the most powerful motivator of all,” ClubsNSW chief executive Anthony Ball told AAP. “Experts tell us that bullying that goes uncorrected in the schoolyard often continues through to the workplace,” CEO of the Murray Down Golf and Country Club, Greg Roberts, told AAP. The courtroom that heard stalking charges against Shane Gerada following Allem’s suicide was told between 10 and 30 per cent of young Australians had fallen victim to cyberbullying, prompting a warning from the magistrate. “It just demonstrates SMS messages or internet communication may have severe consequences on intended victims whether it was meant to or not,” magistrate Peter Reardon told the court, as reported by The Age. “People really should think about what they are doing instead of just hammering some message of hate or aggression.” Allem’s mother Dina Halkic told reporters she had no idea what was happening to her son. “We’re not condemning the internet. But we had no idea. Nor did Allem show us any signs whatsoever,” she said. Sharman says identifying possible signs of bullying in

Parents often don’t know if their child is in trouble or just being a grumpy teenagerm ne Dr Rachael Sharman teenagers can be difficult, but it is vital parents take action if they’re worried. “Unless parents have got access to their email or text messages it can be very hard,” she says. “They [teenagers] may start to become anxious and depressed and withdraw, their grades may suffer and there may be psychosomatic symptoms such as a sore gut, bed-wetting for younger children. Older children will typically withdraw or become isolated and cranky and that’s hard because teenagers can tend to do that anyway. Parents often don’t know if their child is in trouble or they’re just being a grumpy teenager.” For Henderson, the crusade continues to make teenagers more accountable. She is talking with several TV networks and is confident Broken will soon be in production. “It’s under consideration with a network. This one has to be made,” she says. “Young people want to be adults, but they need to start learning responsibility, that if they have a phone or a computer with internet access they need to be accountable.” For help or information visit beyondblue.org.au or call Lifeline on 131 114.

NEW ROLE FOR TRIATHLETE WORDS Nathan Evans

T

wo knee reconstructions have failed to hold back athlete Kacey Willoughby. Forced to give up competitive team sport following her second operation, the Sunshine Coast physical education teacher searched for a new outlet. In triathlon and ironman events, she found it. As well as clocking up an impressive event tally over the past two years, she’s become a model for women in the traditionally male-dominated discipline. Willoughby has just beat tough competition from across Australia to win the inaugural WITSUP.com Scholarship Ambassador Program – an initiative that gives an athlete the opportunity to become an ambassador for the website. The $20,000 scholarship will make Willoughby a recognisable face of the Women in Triathlon website and take her around the nation. Judges looked for a woman with strong potential to further her ability, a genuine passion for the sport and a triathlon racing history. Willoughby’s written application and 60-second audition video impressed judges. “They told me that what stood out was how much I wanted to push the

participation of females in sport and triathlon,” she says. WITSUP.com is an online portal with a mandate to celebrate and raise awareness of women in triathlon, offering interviews, advice, calendar dates and other useful information. Willoughby says women typically account for just 20 per cent of triathlon and ironman competitors – a statistic she hopes to help turn around in her new role. “One of my aims was to be somebody that other females could look up to and say ‘she works full time and can still train’,” says Willoughby. “It doesn’t have to be competitive; people can do this and have a lot of fun. It’s about getting out there and being active instead of being solely competitive,” she says. “I entered my first Mooloolaba Triathlon in 2010.” Willoughby trains at least five mornings and afternoons per week, squeezing in several swims, three or four runs and many hours of cycling under the guidance of coach Bruce Thiele in the lead-up to major competitions. She recently placed sixth in the Mooloolaba Triathlon, and second in her age group and 10th overall in the Port Macquarie Ironman earlier this year.

Morcombes fear year-long wait for funeral Slain teenager Daniel Morcombe might not be laid to rest for at least another year. Speaking outside the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday, Daniel’s father, Bruce Morcombe, said his family was sick of waiting for the release of his son’s remains. They are still being forensically analysed as evidence in his alleged killer’s trial. “The 21st of August is very close

– that’s when Daniel was found [last year] and here we are still talking about it,” Morcombe told reporters. He said he believed the family may be forced to wait until the end of Brett Peter Cowan’s murder trial before Daniel can make his final trip home. “Obviously we’re not comfortable with that, we’re not happy with that, but that’s possible,” Morcombe said. Little Mountain’s Cassie Janetzki will leave for the US tomorrow after winning a sought-after graduate position at the University of Mississippi. Janetzki, 26, who has just completed a degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast, last semester crammed five courses into her USC Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Justice and Legal Studies, to successfully finish in July so she can take up the graduate assistantship. “I’ve been offered a full assistantship, which includes full coverage of almost $60,000 in tuition fees to study a Master of Criminal Justice over two years, as well as a separate part-time job working for a professor,” she says. Janetzki says the exciting career move is a direct result of her participation in USC’s Global Opportunities (GO) program last year.

ustralia is sending a team of child protection workers and technicians to refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon, as thousands of people flee Syria’s civil war to neighbouring countries. The six-member team will help to support as many as 145,000 refugees, including unaccompanied children. Foreign Minister Bob Carr says more than a million Syrians have been forced from their homes and a thousand a day are crossing into Jordan. “This is Australian expertise, delivering vital assistance for the

most vulnerable refugees,” he said in a statement. Five personnel will be based in Jordan and a child protection officer will be sent to Lebanon. “Our child protection officers will work with local agencies on camp safety, child trauma issues and making sure the thousands of refugee children get their share of food and medical aid,” Carr says. The minister has also committed another $4 million in aid for Syria, taking Australia’s total contribution to $20.5 million. This makes Australia the world’s fourth largest national contributor to the refugee crisis. AAP

ikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s defence lawyer says his client, seeking asylum in Ecuador, is in a state of limbo because of secrecy from the US over the charges it may pursue. “We anticipate those charges, but do not have any information from the US as the grand jury proceedings are secret, and therefore the charges are secret,” says Baltasar Garzon, the Spanish former judge who heads Assange’s legal team. “If charges are secret, [Assange] is completely helpless” to plan how to answer the allegations made against him, Garzon told reporters in Quito. The 41-year-old Assange, an Australian, is holed up in Ecuador’s embassy in London and is seeking asylum in the South American nation to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is accused of sexual assault. But he also fears being extradited to the US to face charges over

n torn jeans and saddled with a black backpack, Andrew Witten glances up and down the street for police. The 51-year-old then whips out a black marker and scribbles ‘Zephyr’ on a wall covered with movie posters. He admires his work for a few seconds before his tattooed arms reach for his daughter, holding her hand as he briskly walks away. Witten and a generation of urban kids who spraypainted their initials all over Manhattan in the 1970s and ’80s and landed in the city’s street art scene are coming of age – middle age, that is. And like Witten, a single father, some street artists now considered to be graffiti elders are having trouble putting away their spray-paint cans. As Witten says, “I’m ready. I could go tonight. “I’m chronologically old to be out there doing it,” he admits with a smile. “I’m sure I can’t run quite as fast.” Witten built a reputation as a master at spray-painting extravagant graffiti pieces on freight and subway trains, a practice called train-bombing, in the neighbourhoods where he now teaches his six-year-old daughter, Lulu, to skateboard. For him, spray-painting other people’s property with his nickname, or tag, is almost an addiction, and danger is part of the drug. Crawling under barbed wire, ducking from police officers, even being shot at is all part of the experience. But with an artist’s heart, Witten describes painting graffiti in more poetic terms. He calls it a freeing experience,

PREVIEW Most people associate graffiti with teenage rebellion. But an older generation of street artists is finding it hard to give up the thrill of tagging, and is still making its mark in New York.

in which the silence of night gives way to the hiss and mist of the spray rising into the moonlight. Angel Ortiz recently served 41 days of a 50-day sentence in the Rikers Island jail system after being busted for spraying his tag, ‘LA Roc’, on a billboard in March last year. For decades, Ortiz, 45, has been known on Manhattan’s Lower East Side as LA II. The traumatic loss of a girlfriend brought him out of a 14-year hiatus from graffiti writing. He has since been caught three times spraying his tag on property, each time while walking a friend’s dog. “Everywhere that dog stopped to pee I would write my name,” Ortiz says. “The streets were like my canvases. I just started writing my name everywhere.” When a pair of police officers smelled the fresh paint

and nabbed Ortiz, they asked if he saw himself as too old to be doing graffiti. But even now, Ortiz keeps a spray can or marker in his pocket to satisfy that incessant itch to tag mailboxes, signs and fire hydrants. Ortiz often recalls those golden days in the ’80s, when graffiti became the focal point of the counterculture art world and he partied with Madonna and Andy Warhol. He still lives in the neighbourhood where a young art school dropout named Keith Haring – who later became an influential street and pop artist – showed up at his doorstep in cutoff jeans and glasses asking about his tagging style. Graffiti documentarian and photographer Henry Chalfant looks back at Ortiz’s heyday as a revolutionary time period in street art. “The culture is gone really,” Chalfant says. “The culture that was alive in the ’70s and ’80s doesn’t exist anymore.” Artists gleaned the raw style off street kids, while tunnel-hopping graffiti writers honed their artistic abilities to be commercially successful. It was a time when graffiti tagging exploded into battles between artists over who could produce the edgiest, most elaborate murals in the most dangerous, inaccessible places without getting caught. Chalfant says change came when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority took over the New York regional train system and manufacturers started to build paintresistant trains. Police also aggressively cracked down on graffiti in the ’80s and ’90s. “The whole scene has evolved to something beyond just writing your name,” Chalfant points out. “Artists are

making comments about culture, about society. It’s a personal vision of an artist.” Today Ortiz spends his days painting, peddling his art to galleries and buyers. He never quite rose to the same level of fame as some of his counterparts, and the appetite for graffiti art has diminished in the US art world. Long after Haring’s death, Ortiz claims he rarely receives credit for the collaborations he and Haring did together, although his LA Roc tags are displayed on numerous Haring pieces. Today Witten’s brushes with fame come from his freelance art writing or sporadic visits to his daughter’s school, where he teaches her classmates how to draw. Lulu knows her father draws “crazy art” – a term she picked up from seeing graffiti on trains. From time to time, the thought of spending a few hours in a deserted freight yard still crosses Witten’s mind. He won’t admit whether he still train-bombs, but he won’t say he doesn’t, either. “I’ll decide when I’m too old,” he says. “Fortunately, there’s no forced retirement in graffiti.” AAP

Graffi ti encompasses writing, symbols or drawings that are sprayed or drawn onto any surface in a public place.

Tagging is simply the writer’s name. A throw-up is a more elaborate form of the graffiti artist’s signature. Piecing (short for masterpiece) is an elaborate painting. Blockbusters are large pieces of graffiti. Wildstyle is a complicated form of writing with interlocking letters. The Australian Government treats graffiti as a serious crime, and estimates graffiti costs the community about

$200 million each year.

MWP is considering launching a letters page, so we are now taking feedback. Feel free to share your ideas and opinions.

] THE WEEK THAT WAS

PLANNING: THE KEY TO RETIREMENT

Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

T

he issue of whether you will have sufficient assets to fund your retirement is one that occupies the minds of many. Spending less than you earn is important, but it is also wise to focus on potential threats to your retirement strategy. World economic events remain a large risk to retirement nest eggs. Around the world governments are struggling to control debt, spending, taxation and sovereign risks. This leads to legislative risk as governments can change the rules to increase their share of your pie. A local example is the current government’s halving of the

allowable tax deductible contributions to super. As tax revenue falls away, one of the ways to make up the shortfall is to reduce tax concessions surrounding super. Longevity risk is an issue. Medical advances mean we are living longer so we have to retire later, spend less, or a combination of the two. While it is possible to invest in a lifetime annuity which pays an income for as long as you live, there is no lump sum left on death and with interest rates at very low levels, who wants to lock in for a lifetime of low returns? Most investors know about market risk. Share markets are volatile, property is weak, and commodities have been sold off. Investing solely in fixed interest or cash isn’t attractive with term deposits often paying less than five per cent, and if the inflation genie gets out of the bottle, it’s shares and property that perform well. Investors need to be well diversified so that poor performance of one sector does

not adversely affect long-term returns. The power of compounding means years of poor returns now significantly affects your future. Health risks can affect retirement plans. This can be insured against with trauma insurance, income protection insurance and private health cover. Australians are notoriously under-insured and it is prudent to review insurances. While you can’t control world events or longevity risk, you can protect against market and health risks. Mismanaging finances, being blind to current and future risks, excessive fees and over-confidence can all affect your eventual retirement lifestyle. As always, consult an experienced adviser to assist in managing your future. Mark Davidson is a representative of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. Q. What did winning the award mean to you? A. I am still extremely humbled by the acknowledgement from my peers and colleagues in business on winning the award. It has given me the opportunity to represent sports, health and fitness as a business here on the Coast. Q. How has it helped your business and profile? A. The past year has been incredible. I have met so many amazing people and been invited as a guest speaker at various events, charities and functions. And what is particularly amusing is that my tattoo is as recognisable these days as I am!

Q. What does the future hold? A. These days I am a business partner at Goal Power Training and Fatburners Gym in Nambour. Making fitness fun is at the core of all that we do and we intend to infect as many people as we can with this philosophy. It won’t be hard to spot us, just keep an eye out for challenges and community events that will change the way you think about fitness forever. Q. Any words of advice for budding SCBW and this year’s nominees? A. Don’t be afraid to be human and more importantly, don’t be afraid to show it. Who you are is your greatest asset!

Q. How has it helped your business and profile? A. Kadoe has used the award as a stepping stone to get involved in the economic sustainability of the Sunshine Coast for future generations. The award has opened doors to people Kadoe would not normally have had access to. These open doors have provided the opportunity to acquire greater knowledge, higher profile and build new relationships that will grow stronger in the future. The award added credibility for our strategic plan to become a national company. Carolyn Thomson from Kadoe Commercial Coatings won the Professional Business Woman Award. Q. Can you tell us about your business? A. Kadoe Commercial Coatings installs waterproofing, polished concrete and epoxy coatings for building professionals and commercial property owners. Q. What did winning the award mean to you? A. I am a late bloomer. I won this award in the year that I turned 50. This is a positive message to all business women of any age. Anything is possible if you try. I have a nine-year-old son who is being conditioned by his environment that strong, professional women are the norm. He will go through life accepting this. How positive is that! I am extremely proud to be a role model and this award has given me the profile to get these messages out. MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU

Q. What does the future hold? A. Kadoe is testament to innovation providing opportunities for businesses who can think outside the square and solve their clients’ problems. Kadoe became a national company in May this year. This expansion has been solely based around Kadoe’s ability to develop processes to solve problems. Our profile nationally will expand rapidly over the next 12 months and provide opportunities that didn’t exist before the GFC. Q. Any words of advice for budding SCBW and this year’s nominees? A. This is a personal journey for all finalists. Every one of them will have different expectations of the experience. Don’t be overwhelmed by the process leading up to the gala night. Enjoy every wonderful moment as for once this is all about you. Good luck to you all. You are in esteemed company and all deserving of winning on the night!

HEAR ME NOW

A

ugust 19 to 25 will mark Hearing Awareness Week, which aims to raise community awareness of hearing impairment and the ways people can protect their hearing. This year’s theme is ‘Have you heard? Hearing loss affects everyone’, and

highlights the fact that one in six Australians is deaf, hearing impaired or has a chronic ear disorder. Local business Falls of Sound is supporting Hearing Awareness Week by offering free hearing tests during August and September. Katia Peeters is an audiologist at Falls of Sound and says hearing loss is a problem that can develop at any stage in a person’s life. “Most often, it is gradual and painless,” she says. “You may not realise for several years that this problem is affecting you because it develops so slowly. Nevertheless, it can inhibit your ability to experience the sounds and voices around you.” Peeters says some of the early warning signs of hearing impairment include: being able to hear but not understand; finding it hard to follow conversations in crowded or noisy environments; needing to turn the TV or radio up louder than others; or not always hearing the doorbell or the phone. However, Peeters also says the majority of people who suffer from hearing impairment don’t have to. “Improvements in technology have minimised the barriers to communication for people with a hearing loss,” she says. “It’s reassuring to know that a properly

Injection Lipolysis

fitted hearing instrument can improve communication for at least 90 per cent of people with a hearing impairment.” For more information or to organise a free hearing test phone 5443 8993.

Counting on calcium August 19 to 25 is also National Healthy Bones Week. Organised by Dairy Australia, the week is designed to educate Australians about the importance of eating calcium-rich foods, and to raise awareness about the effects of osteoporosis, which affects one in two females and one in three males over the age of 60.

THAILAND’S WEIGHTY ISSUE Thais have been asked to make healthier choices when donating food to monks, after a survey found that nearly half of the monks recently checked for health problems were overweight or suffering from diet-related diseases. Of the 246 Buddhist monks in 11 provinces taking part in the survey, 45 per cent were overweight and about 40 per cent suffered from diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, ulcers and allergies that could be blamed on unhealthy diets, the survey conducted by the government’s Thai Health Promotion Foundation found. The foundation, which released its results prior to the start of Vassa (Buddhist Lent) on August 3, advised laymen to be more selective about the food they donate during the three-month Lenten period when monks are restricted to their monasteries and temples. Thais tend to offer monks rich foods that were the favourite dishes

of departed ones, such as curries and sweets, as a means of making merit. Another recommendation was that monks, who must fast from noon to dawn, should avoid using soft drinks to stem their hunger. Forty-three per cent of the monks surveyed confessed to smoking cigarettes as another means of curbing hunger. AAP

Lacking Motivation? No Excitement for life? Can’t get into exercise, overweight, low libido and poor energy? Dopamine is a brain neurotransmitter that controls motivation, happiness, drive, libido and energy. Eating well and exercising is crucial to be healthy, but the body is reliant on a few other things to be able to be happy, motivated, build muscle, lose fat, and produce energy. Three of those things are the right balance of food groups in your diet, protein absorption, and good nutrients. Good nutrients, along with proteins, produce dopamine levels in the brain, further making adrenaline, so you have the energy you require to do the exercise you need to achieve the changes in your body you desire. Dopamine is made from tyrosine - an amino acid, B6, folate, zinc, magnesium, B complex, vitamin C and iron. Depression is very common in today’s society, making it hard to get out there and exercise. Both dopamine and serotonin deficiencies are the main causes of depression. Serotonin is also increased in production when you improve your protein absorption and nutrient intake. If depression has been a concern for you, it may be another sign that you have poor protein and nutrient absorption. Balancing fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the diet makes a huge difference when it comes to getting results with exercise, once you have the energy to do it. Muscle growth, and weight loss occur easily when you balance your food

groups properly, as too much of one, compared to another can influence your production of insulin. Insulin will send a message to your body to either gain or lose weight. You need to make sure your percentages of each food group is correct, while keeping your portion sizes adequate, but not more than you require. Your body will tell you when you are not eating enough, but will not often tell you when you are eating too much. With low dietary protein or poor absorption, your muscles cannot grow or repair. Your muscles are the engine of your body that burn calories, the more muscle you have, the more fat you will burn and the faster your metabolism will become. For anyone who is training, you require at least 3-6 protein meals daily, you also need to be absorbing it through the gut. Absorption of protein is often taken for granted. If you’ve been ill, or are a little older, there may be a lack of bacteria in the gut necessary to form a complete amino acid chain, which is where a lot of your proteins are manufactured. You should check this if you are weight training and notice no change in the muscle, or cannot lose weight. You may also notice flat moods as protein is required to make your brain neurotransmitters, hormones, motivation and energy.

By addressing each of the above factors, you will have much greater results with the same effort, while improving your mood in the process. If you would like to know more, book a free ½ hour consult to discuss your options. ARE YOU A SAVVY DRINKER? PREVIEW ‘Education Through Libation’ is Dr Plonk’s motto. He has spent most of his legal drinking age life around wine, and through his many wine travels is focused on the fun, frivolity and the demystification of wine.

Y

ou either love Kyle Sandilands or hate him. Wines are a bit like media personalities, and sauvignon blanc and pinot noir can divide the normally placid wine-loving community. (Personally I feel they are all God’s children and love them all.) The savvy haters describe the aromas as akin to a cat urinating through a juniper bush, and the pinot bashers describe these wines as thin red cordial and a waste of space on the shelf. Wherever possible, I try to even out these prejudices and provide those non pinot or savvy drinkers some great examples of each, to perhaps at least get them thinking about these wines. Sauvignon blanc has, to a large degree, been homogenised by the Marlborough producers in New Zealand – more than 70 per cent of NZ’s export wine is sauvignon blanc, with the majority coming from the Marlborough region. It has its characteristic gooseberry, lychee and passionfruit nose with a well-rounded, sweet mouth feel, with very little acid for structure. With this consistency comes predictability. I urge people to start opening their palates to other areas such as Martinborough and Central Otago, which provide a different spectrum of flavours. It is worth even travelling to Chilean or South African sav blanc. In France, the Loire Valley is home to this variety, and of course don’t forget Australian

sav blanc from the Adelaide Hills and Tassie. Pinot drinkers are vilified in a more personal sense, with attacks on one’s manhood and persuasions arising if you are caught drinking this allegedly light wine by a big, hairy biker who is scoffing down a Barossa shiraz. Yet, in blind tastings I have seen these bigoted palates tricked into the perceived perversion that is pinot noir, actually thinking these wines are bigger in fruit and structure than previously thought. When the wrapper comes off and these punters discover it’s pinot, some react as though they have just kissed their sister in a game of blindfolded spin the bottle. But in some the light goes on and the magic that is pinot noir starts to shine, as complex fruit and barrel aromas inspire, along with that multifaceted palate that can have incredible mouth feel and structure. The problem with pinot is you have to get the moths out of the wallet to get good stuff, and as is said, you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

Every day I’m truffling They’re black, ugly, pungent and mouldy – and worth almost their weight in gold. The kerfuffle over West Australian truffles wafted to a new high last month, with a record estimated 25,000 fungi fanatics eating their way through the annual Mundaring Truffle Festival in the Perth Hills. Now in its sixth year, the festival celebrates the state’s burgeoning truffle industry, which produces more of the aromatic fungus than the rest of Australia combined. Most WA truffles are grown around the south-west orchard town of Manjimup, about 300 kilometres south of Perth. Fetching anywhere from $2000 to $9000 a kilogram, WA’s ‘black gold’ harvest now attracts chefs from around the world. Celebrity chef and Rockpool founder Neil Perry, who conducted a truffle masterclass during the festival, says the local produce is as good as anywhere in the world. “A great Australian truffle is as good as a great French one,” he says. While many home chefs will be put off by the price, Perry says a little truffle goes a long way, and rates his favourite fungal dish as the simple truffle omelette. “Truffles are best done simply,” he says. The Perth festival was inspired by local French chef Alain Fabrègues and now attracts truffle aficionados from around the world.

A SPORTY DEPARTURE FOR HONDA Jemma and Nathan take Honda’s new Civic Hatch VTi-L for a spin NATHAN: It looks like a hybrid. It’s like a little rocket ship. JEMMA: It is a good-sized boot. What do you think of the back end? N: You could really put some junk in that trunk. There are some handles so you don’t have to touch the paintwork when you close the boot. J: And a nice solid floor that lifts to reveal the spare tyre. It looks like a two-door. I really like these discreet handles on the rear doors. N: The look of a three-door with the convenience of a five. And once inside, the cabin is rather like a cockpit. J: So does it fly when you put your foot down? N: We’ll soon find out. I like the vast array of buttons, it’s very sporty and the gear stick looks like a lever from a jumbo jet. J: It’s a departure from the traditional Civic. N: Interesting that the levers are

European – indicator on the left. I like that they have made a feature of the rev gauge in the centre of the dash. This is done without reducing the prominence of the speedo, which sits above as a large digital readout, just below your eye line. J: The pedals are very sporty. N: This car smacks of quality – the contoured seats, and the instruments and interior finish are first class. J: The glove box is dampened so it lowers slowly. Nice. N: There is no shortage of auxiliary points and power outlets. J: Some of the other features of note, Nathan? N: The push-button lights, electronic fold-in mirrors, large vanity mirrors. Only one suggestion – I’d like to see a sunroof. Okay I am ready for take-off. It’s a nice sound when you put your foot down. I’m a big fan of the digital speedo, which is very close to the windscreen, and the brakes are solid. J: How does it handle the corners? N: NASA would be proud, and the acceleration is very competent. The

rear window is interesting. It’s divided horizontally by a cross bar, with the lower part of the hatch frame filled in with glass. So while it gives the impressive of being high-backed car, it’s not at the cost of visibility. J: How are the brakes? (Nathan slams on the brakes.) N: They’re good. The steering wheel is easy to grip and the car is quick to oblige when you put your foot down. J: The handling?

N: The steering is sensitive at speed, which means you have to stay alert. And there is minimal engine noise once cruising. The engine revs at a relaxed 2000rpm at 100km/h, which is impressive for a four-cylinder engine that is on the smaller side. J: Let’s take a look at these extras. The dual-zone air-conditioning for a start is fantastic for the Coast. N: I could get used to driving this. continued over>

< from previous page J: Not too small for you? You like a big car. N: Yes but still, I love the cockpit feel of being in the driver’s seat. It surrounds you with instruments, dials and lights. And it’s a deep dash which conveys size. I am a big fan of these all-embracing seats. This is entertaining to drive and not just in the way it drives, but in part due to the array of bright lights on the dash. It has an upmarket stereo system too. It’s not quite as peppy as some of our other tests but you can still pull away in a hurry and get yourself out of trouble. J: Okay, my turn. It’s a quality steering wheel. It’s smooth leather. There’s plenty of storage and, when you’re in the driver’s seat, it feels like a bigger car than it is. I like the information button on the wheel. You press it to select between radio information, temperature, fuel and trip meter and then back to the clock. N: It has bluetooth hands-free for your phone. J: I agree that you do have to keep a close eye on the road as the steering is so responsive. Your eye does go to the

rev gauge rather than the speedo above it. But that may be because I’m shorter than you are and it could just be something you get used to. N: Being shorter than me? J: No, the location of the speedo. (Jemma nearly misses the turn-off.) N: Hmmm. It handles median strips well. J: (Ignoring Nathan) It nicely handles corners. N: It is interesting that there is no cigarette lighter. It doesn’t bother me as a non-smoker but others might miss that. J: It has good suspension. I’ve hit a couple of pot holes now. N: Deliberately. J: But you haven’t said anything. (As Jemma and Nathan arrive back at

their destination and Jemma begins to park the car, they discover a reversing camera that activates when the reverse gear is selected.) J: I wonder what other appointments this car has that we’ve missed, because they are so discreetly hidden away? N: The camera feature is handy. J: Yes that’s a really important safety feature. It’s an interesting add-on for a small car, something I would expect to see only in a four-wheel drive or large car. I’m also a big fan of the under-seat storage in this car. My own Honda has it as well. (Jemma gets into the back of the car and starts pulling the seats about.) J: The seats also fold almost flat, plus you’ve got your centre console that pulls down from the seat, with cup holders, or just use it as an arm rest. N: You certainly know your way around the back seat of a Honda. J: Yes. There is plenty of room in the back here for two adults, Nathan. That’s not an invitation by the way. I’m just pointing it out. MWP wishes to thank Sunshine Coast Honda for supplying the test car.

For some, the car is the new power suit when it comes to impressing those around you. “Despite wanting to impress at the school and workplace, nearly half of all Australians still choose practicality over any other motivation to sell their car. CAR INSECURITY GRIPPING AUSSIE MUMS esearch shows Aussie mums are feeling judged on the car that they drive, particularly during the school run. One in 10 says it’s the environment in which they felt most judged by the car they drive, making them dread the daily drop-off. From a work perspective, women are also feeling under fire from their boss on their choice of wheels, with one in five feeling most judged on their car choice in a work situation. The Carsguide.com.au Free Way survey examined what causes Aussies to trade in their wheels, with insecurity and practicality topping the list. Both men and women agree family is the biggest critic of our car choice, with one in three saying a family gathering was the time they feel most judged on their vehicle. Karla Pincott, Editor of Carsguide.com.au, says, “Women are clearly feeling judged by both family, friends and strangers on the type of car they drive and are looking to take the driver’s seat in ensuring

about impressing the boss (33%) with their wheels than they are a romantic partner or family. • When deciding to sell their car for an upgrade, baby boomers are just as influenced (21%) by their friends as their gen Y counterparts (21%). • Men are more than twice (25%) as concerned about impressing their mates with the car they drive than women (12%). • Don’t bother paying for an expensive clean when selling your car as only 6% of secondhand car buyers look for this. A bigger concern is how it smells (14%), with smoking and pets a big turn off for prospective owners • Sports car owners are clearly out to impress with their wheels, with one in five saying a first date was the situation they felt most judged on the car they drive The Carsguide.com.au Free Way survey was conducted nationally by Pure Profile in July 2012 amongst 1257 Australians aged 18+.

Toyota has been judged Australia’s most trusted car brand for the seventh year in a row in a Reader’s Digest Australia survey. The accolade comes as Toyota reaches several major milestones, including its 75th anniversary as a global company and 25 years of building Camry in Australia. Toyota has also been confirmed as the world’s top car maker for the first half of this year, selling 4.97 million vehicles globally. “In uncertain times, it’s the brands that continue to offer quality and substance that continue to enjoy Australians’ trust, Reader’s Digest Australia reported.

ast time we laid eyes on the Chrysler 300C, it arrived in Australia with all the subtlety of a Super Bowl halftime show. Big, brassy and dripping in chrome and attitude, the car which came to be known by many as the ‘Pimp Mobile’ strutted its way onto the Aussie market like a bunch of off-duty American sailors landing in town looking for a good time. Instead of the marching bands and cheergirls, the revised model’s launch was heralded by a restrained launch event and stylish ad campaign declaring the 300 to be ‘timeless’. The throwback campaign isn’t the only retro touch. The 300 name, of course, harks back to the iconic Chrysler models of the early ’50s. And the car still pays homage in style and essence to some of those great Chrysler machines – with some glorious retro touches and, perhaps most of all, a price list that seems to have turned back the clock. Helped

partly by the surging Aussie dollar, and partly by an aggressive new pricing strategy, the entry-level version of the new model hits the market as much as $10,000 cheaper than the previous 300C – and the flagship SRT V8 model undercuts its predecessor by even further. While unmistakably a Chrysler, the new model is more elegant in appearance. Fiat-Chrysler Australia’s CEO and president Clyde Campbell says the brand has no bigger goal than

to “look at what consumers care about – we want to delight them”. The entry-level Chrysler 300 with a 3.6-litre V6 is priced from as little as $43,000. Add a frugal V6 turbo-diesel and the base-model rises to $48,000 – up to $56,000 for the Luxury model with features ranging from full leather trim to heated and chilled cup holders. Electronic pedestrian protection is among 65 advanced safety features Chrysler claims. And the halo model SRT with a

6.4-litre, 347-kilowatt V8 engine, may be the best-value performance machine on the planet with a price starting at $66,000. There’s no guarantee, of course, the 300 will be successful. Campbell acknowledged as much – noting the car was being launched into a big-car segment that, around the world, has been in a tailspin of late. “We think there is a way to make this segment work – it’s not about the size of the car, it’s about the value equation and we think we’ve got the right badge and the right interior design to deliver value with this car,” he says. There might be time to bring out the marching bands after all.

THE DAY PREVIEW MWP sat down with three Coast real estate agents to reminisce about the days when marketing meant popping a sign up in the agency window, buyers walked in off the street and contracts were just one page. WORDS Jarna Baudinette

oved to the Sunshine Coast any time in the past 40 years? You’re not alone. Our region has expanded rapidly over the past few decades, growing from a series of sleepy villages dotting the shoreline around Nambour to the 10th largest metropolitan area in Australia. This has mostly happened because, over the years, tens of thousands of tourists have arrived here on holidays, fallen in love with the area and then bought a home. And even if you did this 30 years ago, there’s a chance your first real estate agent is still working in the local market. While we are a relatively new region, our property industry has a few seasoned old-timers, including Jean Hamer, who was living on the Gold Coast in 1967 when she bought a real estate agency in Alexandra Headland. “I think there were only three or four agencies here at the time,” Hamer says. “We bought a long-established agency and set about running it – my husband at the time did the sales and I did the rentals. “It was called rentals then, there was no fancy name or ‘property p p y management g nt department’. p And it was only ly holid holiday rentals,

[ 38 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ AUG UST 10, 201 2

38.indd 1

because there was no such thing as a permanent rental.” The Christmas and Easter holidays were the busiest, and when those tourists had gone home Hamer would have other visitors from the southern states, who booked winter accommodation for two or three months at a time. “A lot of the ones who did that would stay, or would decide to buy something here to retire up to,” she says. “And everyone drove up here – they certainly didn’t have flights into the Coast.” After Hamer and her husband separated she took over the agency, making her one of the Coast’s first female sales agents and agency principals (she later became the REIQ’s first female branch and state president). She says the sales enquiry process was very different in those days. “Everyone who wanted to sell something would come into the office and ask you to sell their property,” she says. “There was no letterbox dropping – when someone wanted to buy they would come into the office [too]. They were coming to you.” Bill Ellis and his wife owned an agency in Palmwoods for the 24 years leading up to 2004, and he says when he returned tto the industry in 2010, the biggest change he was in the way people were buying real estate. noticed wa He doesn’ doesn’t believe a decline in walk-in trade over the past few yyears indicates a slackening in the market, but p rather fundamental change in the way people interact ra ather a fu with the in wi industry. “Certainly “Certa they are using the internet more – the days we would drive people around for a period of time where w w are generally gone,” Ellis says. “At one stage, somebody ar re gene walk in or ring to enquire about a property, and would w w put a few together and try to get it near the mark we’d p w what you’d ask for, then get half a dozen keys and of wh o away we’d go.” aw Hamer agrees. “Your car was your office, and you H had to have it immaculate – we’d have inspections of h the salespeople’s cars,” she says. “Then you’d drive th around all day. You hear the old jokes about signing aro ar contracts on the bonnet of the car, but that was co on true!” tr ru In those days a sales contract was a single, double-sided foolscap page, with “a lot of do o handwriting, clauses crossed out and initialled,” han h Ellis says. Elli E Morrie Bernhardt of Mooloolaba Real Estate M has been selling real estate on the Coast for 28 ha as b years ye ears and agrees the paperwork involved has become much more complex. “For instance, [in the becom me mu listing sheet was one sheet of paper and you got the past] a llist owner to ssign the bottom of it,” Bernhardt says. “These M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

days you have to get them to sign a long document, a contract in itself. And contracts of course have become a lot more complicated than they were 30-odd years ago.” Bernhardt, who recently celebrated his 82nd birthday, started his career in Sydney as an office boy for LJ Hooker in 1946 and quickly decided he wanted to be a salesman. As well as prices – he bought a two-bedroom unit overlooking the water at Seaforth on Alex Parade for $79,500 in 1984 – he says the biggest change to the industry has been the growth of technology. “When I came here 28 years ago, the computer we had in our office was a huge thing which used to make terrible noises. We used to have it serviced and it cost me $350 per month to service it,” he says. “When I bought the next computer I paid it off at $350 per month and it never broke down.” Hamer also remembers real estate before computers or mobile phones. “We were very progressive when we came [to the Coast], we’d had a building company and we still had our two-way radios so we put them in the salespeople’s cars,” she says. “They’d be sitting out the front of a house and would radio the office, and we’d call the owners,” before radioing the salesperson back to let them know it was okay to go in. Even after the shift to computers there was still no email, making it difficult to get contracts signed in a hurry. Working on the sale of the land site

where the Osprey building now stands, Hamer says she called in a few favours from local pilots. “We had friends always trying to get extra hours in their small planes, so they’d fly us out to Roma, up to Hervey Bay or down to the Gold Coast,” she says. “It would have taken you five or six hours to drive there, so we’d fly in and maybe beat other agents who may have been driving, get it all signed, and people would be quite impressed you’d flown in.” The internet has also opened up the market to more buyers. Bernhardt relishes the idea that people in Sydney or Melbourne can now see photos of a potential investment unit online – something unheard of for the majority of his career. “No doubt, yes, it’s made a huge difference,” he says. “We still get a few [walk-ins] – but normally they enquire on the internet. It’s so differently done.” Ellis says people are now essentially doing their own research online – including finding relevant statistics or price data from the council or property analysts – before contacting an agent. “This info was always available but not as easily; you had to physically go into an office and pay for it. Buyers are certainly more informed,” Ellis says. However, he doesn’t see real estate ever shifting to a completely online market. “People still want to physically look at property,” he says. “You see the photo and it can either do [the property] justice or not, so until

you physically see the property, or unless l you ou know the area, you don’t know.” Hamer says the ethos behind the industry has remained the same, and the culture and respect between Coast agents is still strong, even though there are plenty more in the market now. “It’s a people business – you can’t make people buy anything, unless they love it,” she says. “I don’t like just calling it a deal. It’s the biggest amount of money anyone will spend – whether it’s $200,000, $500,000 or $1 million – so it’s a very serious business we do and it’s not to be treated flippantly.” And while the ‘old-timer’ values of “manners, ethics, and treating people as you’d treat your mother” still ring true, Hamer says she isn’t keen to return to the good old days any time soon. “It’s pretty difficult to make big dollars, but you stick to what’s tried and true,” she says. “And I certainly don’t want to go back to having a manual typewriter.”

RATES ON HOLD, AGAIN

A

New Professional at Kawana

dwelling prices have firmed a little over the past couple of months, and business credit has over the past six months recorded its strongest growth for several years. The exchange rate, however, has remained high, despite the observed decline in the terms of trade and the weaker global outlook.” The board believes inflation will be consistent with the target and growth will stay on trend, but given the global outlook, it’s appropriate to leave the cash rate untouched. However, not everyone agrees. Real Estate Institute of Australia president Pamela Bennett released a statement shortly after the announcement, saying the RBA’s decision to leave official interest rates unchanged is disappointing for home buyers. And the Housing Industry Association said while the decision was widely expected, it didn’t “provide any solace to a home building industry that faces the prospect of further deterioration in activity from existing weak levels”.

t its meeting earlier this week the Reserve Bank of Australia Board left the cash rate unchanged at 3.50 per cent. The last time the nation’s central bank cut the rate was in June, by a quarter of a percentage point. This followed the half a percentage point reduction in May. Having picked up in the early months of 2012, growth in the world economy has since softened, claims the RBA. “Current assessments are that global GDP will grow at no more than average pace in 2012. Most commodity prices have declined, which has helped to reduce inflation and provided scope for some countries to ease macroeconomic policies. Australia’s terms of trade peaked nearly a year ago, though they remain historically high.” The RBA adds, “Monetary policy is easier than it was for most of 2011, with interest rates for borrowers a little below their medium-term averages. While it is too soon to see the full impact of those changes,

Serg Gubecka is the new face at Professionals ls Kawana. A real estate agent with more than 17 years’ experience, Serg is also a licensed auctioneer. Professionals Kawana principal Edwin Limque ue says, “Serg understands the art of negotiation and making people feel comfortable with the buying process. He is results oriented and solution based and will do what is right for the client. “Serg is a committed agent who consistently exceeds client expectations.”

Godwin’s landlords a step ahead Local investors using the property management services of Team Godwin Real Estate are set to be more informed about the real estate market than ever before. The agency has recently switched to the Ireviloution Intelligence property management software system, and principal Luke Godwin says the change will ensure his clients receive consistently high-quality service. “We now have a system that not only assists us in our day-to-day property management operations, but also constantly feeds us information on market rental values and trends, and keeps our agents up-to-date with this information so they can provide a higher level of information to our clients,” Godwin says. “For landlords, this will assist in keeping your investment at the maximum returns by regularly reviewing the rental income compared to the rest of the market.”

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Crabs – are you in a career rut? Maybe a change of approach is needed at work. Shifting stale old energy and inviting fresh ideas could lead to a new job opportunity.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Focus on manifesting the life you want in the future – and avoid being too conventional. Listen to your inner voice on Sunday. The more ego-driven you are, the harder the day will be.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 With fabulous moon/Mercury aspects, you’ll have a successful weekend if you combine logic with intuition. Get the facts first – and then have the courage to follow your gut instincts.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 This weekend favours long lunches, lazy afternoons and lots of fun with family and friends. The moon/Jupiter connection encourages you to get in touch with a friend overseas.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Your sex life is about to get shaken up as Jupiter stimulates your desire for a more adventurous approach. Celibate Scorpios – exciting spiritual insights are waiting to be discovered.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Sagittarians can be selfish souls but this weekend you’re focused on those around you. You’re in the mood to help, and are keen to make a difference in the lives of others.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 With Jupiter jumping through your wellbeing zone, take a broad and informed approach to your health. Include plenty of outdoor activities in your fitness routine.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Get out and about in your local community this weekend. Communicating with people from a wide range of backgrounds will satisfy your desire for variety and mental stimulation.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 The moon and Jupiter hook up in your home zone, so put aside plenty of time to spend with loved ones. Going away for the weekend with family members is also favoured.
