hat were you doing four years ago? As I type this it is Tuesday August 14, but in 2008, the 14th was a Thursday – the official launch party date of a new magazine called My Property Review. It was a good night and the first opportunity we all had to meet the real estate agents who helped launch the magazine and our new workmates, who are now more like family than colleagues. A couple of name changes, an office relocation, and some staff comings and goings later, we now celebrate four years of publishing on the Sunshine Coast. So HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US! And to Jarna and Nathan, who also celebrate their birthdays this week. The concept of change is a bit of a theme this week – I was lucky to chat to Bernard Salt for our cover story, on that funny thing called

] demographics. Bernard’s job is to track changes in population and he spoke to MWP about where we have been and where we are going, and what it means for those of us who live on the Coast. Turn to page 6 for that story. On page 24 our fashion expert Dianna Mullins discovers that grey is gorgeous. (There is some book, apparently, with that colour in the title that everyone is talking about.) While in My Palate I talk to a young man whose future is chocolate brown. Continuing the colour theme, in Agenda we are off to explore the red planet with a snap-happy little rover called Curiosity, while our property cover story takes a look at all things bright and beautiful – with our lighting feature, which is on page 36. There is also motoring, local and international news, plenty of social photos and lots more.

WE THE

B PREVIEW Societal change is as inevitable as the ocean currents – it’s how we ride the waves that determines whether we sink or swim. MWP talks to an expert about the Coast’s role in a changing world, and how as a united community, we can create a future to be proud of. WORDS Jemma Pearson

ernard Salt is perhaps the country’s best known demographer and commentator on social and population trends. He advises big business and is the author of the best-selling book The Big Shift. MWP was lucky to have an exclusive chat with him, about the crucial economic and social trends that will impact the Sunshine Coast in the coming years. Q. There aren’t that many demographers around. How did you become one? A. I am a failed history and geography school teacher. I did some stats at uni but my real interest was always history and geography. I started work in a boutique consultancy doing feasibility studies for shopping centres, which largely focused on population levels. Q. We hear a lot about gen Y, X and baby boomers. In your opinion, is where a person falls within these categories based purely on birth year, or is it a state of mind? A. Some people regard generational tags as a bit like astrology. But I do think that people from different eras share a commonality of thinking. Anyone who experienced the Great Depression was frugal for life! The later generations get a little more blurry, but generally, I do think there are common traits and thinking to people born in different decades. It’s the result of shared experiences. Q. While the term ‘baby boomer’ has been around for years, the need to put all following generations into a category is relatively new. Why are we so preoccupied with labelling ourselves and others? A. Business needs to label and generalise about a market

[ 6 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ AUG UST 17, 2012

6.indd 1

so as to make decisions. Some people get mightily upset if they are labelled but I’m sorry, business does it all the time. It’s the only way they can grapple with the market. And I think the broader community likes to see someone offer an interpretation of behaviour that is connected to a theory of some sort. Gen Ys are indulged, therefore they are very much me-focused. People like seeing traits explained – it’s not all chaos, there’s a reason behind people’s behaviour. Q. How has the GFC changed the economy and the way we view money? Is it a long-term change or a glitch? A. The GFC has made consumers more cautious. We are concerned about job security and therefore we are more likely to save for a rainy day. If we think there’s little chance of losing our job, then we are more inclined to spend to the max. We haven’t been in that situation since early 2008. Ask retailers, they will tell you the mind and mood of middle Australia without any fancy demographic interpretation. Q. The traditional industries on the Sunshine Coast (tourism, retail and construction) are hurting. Will we bounce back or does our region need to rethink our role in the nation? A. I think all regions need to be continually reviewing their offerings in relation to where the economy is moving. The jobs that will expand in the future are skills and knowledge based. The Sunshine Coast, and other regions, should focus on further development of the tertiary and technical education and innovation sectors. It’s all about skills in the 2010s and beyond. The 2000s were all about lifestyle. M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

Souces: Australian Bureau of Statistics, Queensland Places, *Queensland Treasury and Trade estimates

Q. What will the Sunshine Coast look like in 2050? A. In 2050 the Sunshine Coast will be physically bigger and more independent of Brisbane, but oddly more connected to the global economy. What started as a dormitory suburb of Brisbane will evolve with due care and planning into a proud co-located (with Brisbane) lifestyle global city. Q. A lot of people on the Sunshine Coast are nervous of change (we often hear “we don’t want to become another Gold Coast!”). You talk a lot about Australia needing to grow our population. What’s your advice for those who fear population increases and development, and the impact they have on lifestyle? A. I do understand people who are fearful of change. And we should indeed be very fearful of bad change. But some change is good; new people, new opportunities. Sometimes people and thinking gets staid. Growth that is appropriately managed is good for a city. Although, I am well aware that there are some people who want nothing to change – at all, in any way, at any time. That’s fine. We live in a democracy; everyone’s entitled to their view. Including me. Q. What are the challenges for our nation in the years ahead? A. The challenge for our nation is the same as the challenge for the Sunshine Coast. It is the challenge of unity of view. We have a hung parliament, which I think has been a disaster for this nation. Politicians are focused on either staying in or getting into power. I don’t care who gets in, just so long as they have a workable majority so that they have the boldness of vision to make the right decisions. For the Sunshine Coast it is a similar issue; it is division of purpose and thinking – we should be growing; no we shouldn’t do anything. What we need as a nation is what the Sunshine Coast and other regions need – visionary, bold, passionate and committed leadership to galvanise the community into a single force. A community divided gets nothing done; it’s like a rabbit dazzled by a spotlight, too frightened to move in any direction for fear of upsetting an interest group. A community united – in whichever direction they so choose – is a force to be reckoned with. MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU

Population changes affect not just those that are on the move, but all people in a community or region, the businesses that service that region and governments that run it. A population is a fluid thing – growing, shrinking and changing. The demographics of a region are the statistical characteristics on the people that live there and include things like gender, race, income level, asset ownership and much, much more. One theory has to do with timber ships in Britain’s Royal Navy. At inspection, the barefoot seamen had to line up on deck along the seams of the wooden planks underfoot (toeing the line). The term is often related to sport – in track events competitors have to toe the starting line.

“Everybody pees in the pool. It’s kind of a normal thing to do for swimmers. When we’re in the water for two hours, we don’t really get out to pee. Chlorine kills it so it’s not bad.” You wouldn’t want to go in the water after Olympic champ Michael Phelps has been training. AAP

To mark the London Olympics, PRS for Music (a copyright advocacy group in the UK) polled its members to find the most popular sporting song of all time. So who walked away with the gold medal?

The Coles development, on the site of Nambour’s old sugar mill, is well underway

NAMBOUR FIGHTING FIT WORDS Nathan Evans

USINESS leaders are confident Nambour – the Coast’s traditional heart – has a healthy future despite pressures due to the Maroochy CBD project and the Kawana health hub. The two major projects will have Kawana challenging Nambour as the region’s major hospital precinct and Maroochy gaining the Coast’s principal activity centre, to be developed on Horton Park golf course. Nambour Alliance chair Simone Pearce says new development, strategies to lure business and the state’s proposed rail line duplication plan will help Nambour position itself for success. She says Nambour is Simone Pearce resilient, having

overcome previous economic challenges including the opening of Sunshine Plaza and the closure of the town’s sugar mill. “We’ve spent the last five years working on rejuvenating Nambour in all sorts of different ways,” says Pearce. “We have ongoing plans with the introduction of Coles and the approval of Aldi. With both of those getting across the line, we’ve seen a significant increase in confidence.” The Nambour Alliance and its subsidiary Nambour Retailers Group are working with Sunshine Coast Council on strategies to future-proof Nambour. These include talk of developing the showgrounds to

[ 14 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ AUG UST 17, 201 2

create a vibrant sports and entertainment precinct. “There is great potential for that rough diamond to be improved and expanded and we see it as a definite future centre for culture, music, sport and social activities akin to an events centre,” says Pearce. Pearce says a plan by the State Government to duplicate the rail line will also assist Nambour. “The duplication of the rail line can’t come fast enough and we are working toward calling on the State Government to accelerate that,” Pearce says.” Divisional councillor Greg Rogerson agrees the rail duplication will bring huge rewards to Nambour as the region’s public transport hub. “We are really sad that we can’t get any definite commitment from the State.” Nambour Retailers Group chief Rhonda Billett says interest in growing Nambour’s economy is high, with record numbers at recent group meetings. She says Nambour is a town in transition, having experienced a significant demographic shift since the mid2000s. Catering to this change will ensure a vibrant economy. “In 2006 there was a massive demographic shift. Property prices on the Coast were astronomical and young people could not afford to buy closer to the Coast,” she says. “In Nambour now, the significant

demographic is professional couples with two incomes and one kid. Most people thought there were lots of retirees, and people were finding that business was going down and things were not as alive as they once were. We dug around and found the statistics and let business owners know why things were quiet – as business owners we have to target the demographic.” Suzanne Long, head of one of

Rhonda Billett Nambour’s largest employers – Nambour RSL Services and Citizens Club – says in 20 years of working in Nambour she has witnessed growth. “Despite not having the marketable value of a beach like Mooloolaba, we have relied on business development, our beautiful hinterland and community spirit to boost tourism and population,” she says. “I don’t believe that Nambour will be left behind and I believe in the vision to further grow Nambour into a thriving, active hinterland community.”

ecent changes to Queensland Health’s purchasing policies could play a key role in local businesses making the most of the new Kawana health precinct, State Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson says. Along with Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson, Simpson last week addressed a forum of key stakeholders who met to discuss the economic ‘ripple effect’ set to be created by the construction of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. It is estimated $1 million will be spent each day in the Kawana precinct over the next five years, and Simpson told the forum there will be opportunities for local businesses to form part of the health precinct’s supply chain. “One of the most significant aspects of this project is that it is really recognising that the private sector can derive huge benefits from

NEW WASTE PIPELINE Sunshine Coast Council says around 800 fewer truck trips will be made each year thanks to a new liquid waste pipeline that will transport liquid waste from the Eumundi Road Noosa Landfill site to nearby sewerage systems.

The Kawana health hub will offer a great boost to local business working cooperatively with government,” Simpson says, adding she is “delighted” that, as part of the State Government’s ongoing health reforms, health minister Lawrence Springborg has written to local health boards advising them they will now be able to “move away from a centralised purchasing policy” and enter into their own contracts.

“This is a huge opportunity for many businesses, when you consider the number of consumables that go into running a health system,” Simpson says. “The opportunity to also have businesses stepping up and potentially, in conjunction with the decision of the local health board, being able to supply services [and] consumables, I think is very exciting.”

GO CARD IMPROVEMENTS Managing a transport go card online and from mobile devices will be easier following enhancements to TransLink’s go card website, says State Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson.

ulia Gillard has found a kitchen table issue she can lay at the feet of the Liberals and Nationals. The prime minister has swung into action to prevent “unnecessary” rises in household power bills after jumps of up to 50 per cent over the past four years. Gillard this week gave the states a December 2012 deadline to find ways to take the pressure off or face “the big stick of regulation”. The move has helped shift the focus away from the Labor Government’s carbon tax, to the growing number of states under Liberal-National coalition control that are enjoying payoffs from their power assets. For years, the states have reaped millions, even though household power useage has been declining as consumers become more energy conscious. The main price driver is energy

infrastructure spending. Utilities have poured billions of dollars into so-called “poles and wires” construction and the flow-on costs now make up about half of the average power bill. While NSW and Queensland agree with Gillard there’s been unnecessary “gold-plating” of assets, they have blamed previous state Labor governments. But as the prime minister reminded state leaders this week, power prices are the “new petrol prices”, in terms of their importance to household budgets. AAP

Australia provides $2m to fight piracy Australia is to provide another $2 million to help tackle piracy in the Indian Ocean. Foreign Minister Bob Carr says Australia will also extend the secondment of an Australian Federal Police officer to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Carr says Somali piracy in the Indian Ocean is a serious international threat. As of late May this year, 13 vessels and about 280 crew members were being held hostage

by Somali pirates who had demanded ransoms of millions of dollars. “Pirate groups move regularly and use hostages and locals as human shields to protect themselves and extract ransom payments,” he said in a statement. “This puts Australians at risk, including seafarers crewing foreignowned ships or Australian tourists on pleasure craft or cruise ships. It impacts on international trade and tourism and undermines regional development efforts.”

New ambassador to Afghanistan named Australia’s next ambassador to Afghanistan will be diplomat Jonathon Philp. He will take up the new appointment in October, replacing Paul Foley who has been in Kabul for the past three years, Foreign Minister Bob Carr said in a statement last week. Philp is a senior career officer with

the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and was until recently assistant secretary of DFAT’s International Organisations Branch. He has previously served as ambassador to Turkey and deputy head of mission in Burma, and in other postings to Saudi Arabia, Vientiane, London, Nairobi and Madrid. AAP

agma may have been present in this week’s eruption on Mt Tongariro in New Zealand and it is high up in the mountain, but there is no indication that a much bigger eruption is about to occur. Scientists are continuing to monitor Mt Tongariro, which erupted on Monday for the first time in more than a century, and a separate eruption on White Island, the first since 2001. GNS Science vulcanologist Nico Fournier says the discovery that there was more magma in edifices

on Mt Tongariro increased the chance of a more magmatic eruption but it was too early to assign a probability to it. “It could range from explosions to simple lava flows but at this stage we don’t have evidence that there is magma very close to the surface,” he says. AAP

POSTCARDS

FROM MARS PREVIEW In another giant leap for humankind, our first successful Mars exploration is exceeding expectations. Curiosity is busily doing its thing on Mars, while we watch in awe at the pictures being beamed back to Earth.

T

he photo-snapping rover Curiosity returned another postcard from Mars last week – the first 360-degree colour panorama of Gale Crater. Scientists admired the sweeping vista. In the distance was the base of Mount Sharp, a five-kilometre-high mountain rising from the crater floor, where the six-wheel rover planned to go. “It’s very exciting to think about getting there, but it is quite a ways away,” says mission scientist Dawn Sumner of the University of California, Davis. Though it’s the sharpest view yet of the landing site, the panorama was stitched together from thumbnails while scientists waited for better-quality pictures to be downloaded. Since safely landing, Curiosity has dazzled scientists with peeks of its new home that at first glance seems similar to California’s Mojave Desert. The initial pictures were fuzzy and black-and-white. Then the rover raised its mast containing high-definition and navigation cameras that have provided better views. The car-size rover remained healthy and busy testing its various instruments. Several pebbles landed on the rover’s deck next to its radiation sensor during the final seconds of landing as it was lowered to the ground, but project managers said the stones posed no risk. Curiosity “continues to behave basically flawlessly”, says mission manager Mike Watkins of the NASA Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $2.5 billion mission. It’s been a good mission so far. Curiosity’s daring August 6 plunge through the pink skies of Mars was more than perfect. It landed with spectacular style, said a NASA

scientist at the time, who described the first images of its gymnastics through the so-called “seven minutes of terror”. Hours after the US space agency learned the rover had arrived on target, engineers and scientists got the first glimpses of the intricate manoeuvres it made to hit the Martian soil safely. “It’s a spectacular image,” says NASA research scientist Luther Beegle. The photo, taken from an orbiting Mars spacecraft, shows Curiosity dangling from its supersonic parachute as it descended. Extraordinary efforts were needed for the landing because the Martian atmosphere is very thin, and doesn’t offer much friction to slow down the one-tonne spacecraft. The arrival was an engineering tour de force, debuting never-before-tried acrobatics as Curiosity sliced through the Martian atmosphere at 20,900 kilometres per hour. Cheers and applause echoed through the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) after signals from space indicated Curiosity had survived the plunge. “Touchdown confirmed,” said engineer Allen Chen. “We’re safe on Mars.” It was NASA’s seventh landing on Earth’s neighbour; many attempts by the US and other countries to zip past, circle or set down on Mars have gone awry. Over the next two years, Curiosity will drive over to a mountain rising from the crater floor, poke into rocks and scoop up rust-tinted soil to see if the region ever had the right environment for microscopic organisms to thrive. It’s the latest chapter in the long-running quest to find out whether primitive life arose early in the planet’s history. AAP

For many, the latest news from Mars isn’t something to celebrate, with naysayers again asking why, when there is so much need on Earth, billions are spent on space exploration. Ryan Anderson, an astronomy and physics graduate and keen Mars Science Laboratory researcher, publishes the blog The Martian Chronicles, and offers these nine reasons why exploring space is a good thing.

such as healthier baby food to technology that better diagnoses breast cancer.

3. Inspiration: According to Ryan, the Apollo missions of the ‘60s and ‘70s inspired countless children to pursue maths and science careers. Maintaining that enthusiasm is even more vital in our technology-dependent world.

7. Answering the big questions: How

4. The economy: Space exploration would be a waste of money if NASA sent shuttles full of cash into space, but most of the money spent funds the salaries of thousands of workers.

1. Perspective: As images of space are brought back from telescopes and space craft, it gives a humbling sense of our place in the universe.

2. Understanding our world: The universe is a magnificently complex place and by studying other worlds we are reminded how fragile and changeable Earth is. NASA-funded researchers also keep an eye on things like asteroids that can threaten our world.

5. Exploration: It is human nature to want to explore, but now that Everest has been climbed and all lands have been ‘discovered’, space is now the final frontier.

6. New technology: A lot of very clever people come together to take part in the exploration of space, with the result being many scientific discoveries and helpful inventions. NASA technology can be seen in many things

did life begin? How was our world created? Are we alone? These questions and others have been asked since humans could speak. Thanks to space exploration, we are finding the answers.

8. International collaboration: Large exploration projects are usually the result of co-operation between nations.

9. Long-term survival: The stuff of Hollywood movies, many believe it’s only a matter of time before something happens to our planet – be it a natural disaster, nuclear war or a comet – that wipes out humans and all that we have achieved. Some believe space exploration is an insurance policy for humanity and all its achievements.

] THE WEEK THAT WAS

BLUE CHIP SHARES VERSUS TERM DEPOSITS

Darryl Watt is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

T

here has been a lot of discussion recently about the Reserve Bank cutting official interest rates. Beginning in November 2011 there have been four rate cuts totalling 1.25 per cent. While this might be a blessing for those with home mortgages, it is bad news for those looking to increase income in their retirement, and even worse still for those already retired and living off their savings. Term deposit interest rates have fallen heavily recently in conjunction with the RBA cuts, with average interest rates sitting

around 4.6 per cent per annum. Given that CPI is currently running at just under 2 per cent per annum, this does not provide much of a return in real terms. Federal Treasury Secretary, Dr Martin Parkinson, has recently pointed to possible further interest rate cuts, stating that there was lots of scope on monetary policy space. In addition, with economists predicting further official interest rate cuts this year, and many business leaders calling for the same, it would appear that term deposit rates may be on the way down even further. In addition to falling interest rates, the Federal Government appears to have scrapped its plan to provide a 50 per cent discount on interest income on the first $1000 of interest earned on savings accounts. This is unfortunate news for savers and for those living off interest payments. However, Parkinson has also said that our banking system is in

ROLLER BLINDS PANEL GLIDES ROMAN BLINDS

very good shape and is far better financed than the pre-GFC days. Hence, this may present an opportunity for investors to obtain higher returns by investing directly in the bank rather than in their term deposits. For example, the shares in the big four banks are currently providing a grossed up dividend return of approximately 9 per cent per annum – a great return by any measure and better than most term deposits on offer in the market. We all know the saying, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. It is important to diversify your investment portfolio and regularly review your asset allocation. Consider investing in some blue chip shares to enhance your income and rebalance your portfolio. Darryl Watt is a representative of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. CLERC AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

sk most teenagers on the Coast what their passion is and they will probably mention surfing, sport, music or their mates. For one hinterland local, it’s chocolate. Not consuming the yummy sweet stuff, but making it. Sebastien Clerc is probably not your typical teenager, though. His parents, Thierry and Cindy Clerc, run Le Relais Bressan, Flaxton’s prominent French restaurant. But it was another chef, Eric Pernoud from Cooroy’s Maison De Provence who, according to Clerc, “showed me the ways of playing with chocolate”. Pernoud, a pastry chef and chocolatier, took Clerc on for work experience

once a week and taught him the techniques and tricks to making quality desserts. Clerc knew from the start that the road to his future was paved with cocoa. Clerc started supplying his parents’ restaurant with petit fours to be served with coffee. He was then asked if he sold them. “Thanks to the muchappreciated support from family, friends, colleagues and customers, Cocorico was discovered,” he says. Cocorico now services its own customers as well as supplying Le Relais Bressan. Not bad for a young man of 17 whose business is not quite a year old. Clerc says, “A great aspiration of mine is to illuminate consumers’ views on sweets and confectioneries such as chocolate. I have a great passion for experimenting with new flavours and mixing the unthinkable ingredients to create new tastes and palate-stimulating flavours.” For those with a sweet tooth, Clerc’s confections are well worth a try. Single chocolates cost $1.50, a box of eight is $12 and 18 will set you back $25. Flavours include pear, espresso, bitter caramel and marzipan. They can be purchased from Le Relais Bressan or by contacting Sebastien Clerc on 0434 633 768.

CANADIAN VINTNER TURNS TOMATOES INTO WINE Canadian wine lovers have been raising a glass to an increasingly popular but unusual vintage, crafted from a secret Belgian family recipe four generations old that uses tomatoes. Pascal Miche says his is the first tomato wine to become a successful commercial product. Only three years after he launched the product, he sells 34,000 bottles annually. “I wanted to finish what my great-grandfather had started” in the 1930s, he says, as he inspects his crop of 6200 heirloom tomato plants on his ‘vineyard’ in Charlevoix, about 400 kilometres north-east of Montreal. Miche immigrated to Canada from Belgium seven years ago. He says he always had plans to commercialise his great-grandfather’s recipe and took the plunge in 2009. The tomatoes getting ready to ripen by mid-August will be his third harvest of the golden elixir. In North America, Miche can legally call his product “wine”. However, he will have to rename it if he follows through with plans to export it, notably to France, where only alcoholic beverages made from fermented grape juice may use the appellation. From field to bottle, the transformation of tomatoes into wine takes about nine months, resulting in clear white wine with an 18 per cent alcohol content. There ere is no tracee left of the tomato in the final product. produc u t. For now, Omerto o wine, which sells for about $24 for a 375ml bottle, is available only in a few stores. AAP

Acclaimed Coast music export Asa Broomhall will join with Band of Frequencies for a not-to-be-missed performance tonight at Solbar. Broomhall has given us his fifth independent album, Jangle House, which was recorded in an iconic old guitar shop in Brisbane. One reason for this was that Broomhall’s brother’s house, where previous albums were recorded and mixed, was consumed by the January 2011 floods, and was subsequently condemned and demolished. Broomhall has many followers both at home and afar and his talents are well matched with popular local group Band of Frequencies, who draw their influences from roots, reggae, rock, soul, spiritual jazz, electronic and psychedelic styles to create their own expression.

LOON LAKE AT SOLBAR

Brothers Simon, Sam and Nick Nolan, and honorary brother Tim, grew up in country Victoria; after years spent bonding over music, they did the natural thing and formed a band. Overseas adventures supplied the final pieces of the puzzle: a lead guitarist and new friend, in the form of Melbourne native Dan, and a name, nicked from an EL Doctorow novel found in a Costa Rican café. This has been a busy year for Loon Lake, having played Pyramid

Rock Festival, Big Day Out, Groovin The Moo, as well as gigs with Girls, Bluejuice, Cage The Elephant and Kaiser Chiefs. They’ve also found time to record a new EP called Thirty Three, which hit the shelves on August 3. They’ll play Solbar with Cub Scouts and Glass Towers. JUMP TO IT

R U OK?

Bounce your way to fitness, with more fun and fewer injuries.

The R U OK? Foundation launched its new R U OK? at School program in Sydney last week, taking suicide prevention strategies into the schoolyard. Federal Minister for Mental Health, Mark Butler, and local MP Anthony Albanese, met with students at Canterbury Boys High School to raise awareness of mental health issues. “Students and teachers from Canterbury Boys and other schools in Sydney helped design this program to reflect their needs and the issues they experience at school,” Albanese says. “It’s a program aimed at encouraging students to have open and frank conversations with each other, which could ultimately save lives. We want to empower students to ask the question ‘are you OK?’ and also find the courage to say ‘I’m not OK’, which is often the toughest step.” AAP

F

or those who have been criticising trampolining as a recreational activity rather than an Olympic sport, NASA has news for you: bouncing will get you fit faster than running, with far less risk of injury. During a 1980 study, NASA scientists took measurements of eight young men as they walked, jogged and ran on a treadmill, and then had them jump on a trampoline. “The external work output at equivalent levels of oxygen uptake were significantly greater while trampolining than while running,” the NASA scientists says. “The ratio of oxygen consumption was sometimes more than twice as efficient as treadmill running.” When you jump on a trampoline, the force of gravity on your ankles, back and forehead is evenly distributed, but when you run on a treadmill, the G-force on

the ankles typically is twice as great, the NASA researchers found. This can lead to shin splints and knee problems. At first, rebound exercise just meant jumping on a trampoline. Now, rebounding shoes expand the exercise options available. A popular brand is Kangoo Jumps – fitness shoes with a bootlike ankle support attached to a rebounding platform. The University of British Columbia studied 25 novice runners – 13 who wore normal running shoes and 12 who wore Kangoo Jumps – for 12 weeks in 2002. The Kangoo runners increased their peak oxygen uptake by 18.2 per cent, the regular runners by just 3.7 per cent. More significantly, 42.8 per cent of the control group suffered lower leg injuries during the test period. There were no injuries among the Kangoo Jumpers.

MAKE/MODEL KIA SPORTAGE DETAILS Five-door, five-seat compact SUV with choice of four-cylinder petrol or four-cylinder turbo-diesel engines; five-speed manual (base model only) or six-speed automatic transmission.

NEW KIA SOFT-ROADER SCORES TOP MARKS WORDS Peter Atkinson

T

HINK Korean cars and the words most likely to spring to mind are price, value, and affordability. And why not? The fast-emerging Korean manufacturers probably offer more car for the price than just about anyone else. Yet, when you scan the publicity for Kia’s new Sportage compact SUV, the value equation doesn’t even get a mention. Not a word. Instead, they talk about how hard they have worked to build quality into this third-generation of the popular soft-roader. Most of all, they talk about the lengths the company went to, to tailor the Sportage for Australian conditions and driving preferences. It’s a mark not only of this ambitious brand’s attention to detail, but also of how seriously Kia takes the Australian market. The two previous Sportage models were unabashed success stories Down Under – the previous model sold about 7000 units in

MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU

31.indd 1

Australia since its 2004 release. Yet, so quickly is Kia moving with its brand development strategy that this new Sportage resembles the previous two in little more than name. It sports new engines, new transmission, completely new styling and new driving characteristics, and we could not help but be impressed when we drove this latest edition. The Sportage is the result of some brave design. There’s no doubt Kia is out to turn

some heads with its new models. But the Sportage doesn’t just impress with its looks. It’s also a smart thing to drive – perhaps the facet that surprised us most about the car. It offers an excellent array of specifications, all of which makes the Sportage seem like uncommonly good value. Not that you’ll hear them making a fuss about it.

TECH STUFF 2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel produces 135kW@4000rpm, 390nM@1800rpm. Also available with 2-litre and 2.4-litre petrol engines. THIRST 7.5L/100km (combined figure for diesel model). VERDICT High-end style and performance at a low-end price. BOTTOM LINE from $25,990 (two-wheeldrive petrol base model); $34,990 (SLi diesel model, as tested).

LEXUS UNVEILS REINVENTED LS FLAGSHIP Lexus has unveiled its new LS range – as a result of one of the most significant mid-cycle major changes in the vehicle’s history. Lexus says the vehicle has undergone more than 2500 ongoing improvements since its launch in 2007, with the latest LS adding a further 3000 improvements and component changes to the vehicle, including three world firsts and no less than 14 Lexus firsts. Speaking at the launch of the new model, president of Lexus International Kiyotaka Ise said, “With over 730,000 sold during its 23-year, four-generation history, the LS has grown and evolved with the times. “Our new flagship has much greater visual presence; the bold new design reflects how Lexus is evolving. This new LS brings sharper driving dynamics, the highest levels of refinement and luxury and once again is supported by industry-

A new lease on life for the Lexus LS leading technology, Ise said. Lexus Australia chief executive Tony Cramb says the new LS continues Lexus’ commitment to delivering engaging vehicles. “This LS is not just redesigned, it is re-engineered to deliver on Lexus’ ongoing commitment to design, driving dynamics and enjoyment – effectively the vehicle that was World Car of the Year at launch, just got a whole lot better, says Cramb. The new LS is due for local introduction in late 2012, early 2013 – with further details on model line-up and pricing to come closer to launch.

LIGHT PREVIEW MPP takes a look at some lighting options to bring illumination to your home.

W

hether it’s a petite night light in the bathroom or a grand chandelier in your entry, we demand a lot from the lighting in our homes. The right fixtures in the right places not only provide the illumination we need, but they do so with beauty and grace. Here are some ideas.

1. SET A MOOD WITH ACCENT LIGHTS While they don’t add much in the way of illumination, accent lights are an essential part of a well-dressed room because they set the mood, add warmth and usher in lots of character. To add a touch of sparkle, try placing accent lamps in areas that are already well lit, but could use something extra, like on an entry table, atop the dining-room

buffet, or the benchtop in a bathroom or kitchen. Because accent lights won’t be providing the main source of lighting in a room, you can focus simply on how they look, not how they perform. It’s therefore a good opportunity to go for those lamps that look like artwork themselves. Accent lights make wonderful, welcoming night lights. After cleaning up the kitchen after dinner, try turning off the overhead lights but leaving a small accent light burning on the benchtop, so when you pop back in to answer the phone or grab a glass of water, you are greeted in the darkness by a soft, warm glow. It’s also a good idea to turn on an accent light in the main-floor bathroom when entertaining so guests can find their way. If you want a small seating arrangement to look

warm and inviting, add an accent light. Place one on the table in your breakfast nook to pull the grouping together and make it look finished. Try the same idea next to a chair in your entry or bedroom.

2. GET STUFF DONE WITH FUNCTIONAL LIGHTING Lights are perfect for those who like to set a mood in the home, but you’ll also need illumination to get stuff done. That’s where functional lighting shines. These lamps need to bathe a room in light, and look beautiful while doing it. While black shades are wonderfully on trend, they restrict the light output of a lamp. So if you’re picking a lamp to put on your office desk, in the main conversation area in your family room or by your bedside where you read, go with a light shade. While small, delicate lamps are occasionally the right choice if you have a tiny table or other small space, most often a bigger lamp will look better on a standard-size table. The key to picking the right-size lamp is to study the size and scale of the table where it will sit, the size of the furnishings that surround it and any other accents that will be on the table. Go with the largest-size lamp that will work. Lamps are an investment, so you need to treat them well so they will last for years. Make sure your lamp is paired with the right-sized shade. If you’re not sure, take it to a lighting store and ask the pros. Check shades periodically to make sure they are holding up. If they are faded, dingy or out of style, replace them. (You might find that when you use higher-wattage bulbs in lamps, the shades need to be replaced more often.) Sometimes just updating the shades can invigorate a room.

3. ILLUMINATE ROOMS WITH STYLISH CHANDELIERS Many stylists and lighting designers shun overhead lighting because they think it can be cold and harsh. But a gorgeous chandelier can convert the harshest of overhead critics. Right now, there is an amazing selection of chandeliers

Light shades work best for task lighting. This one, the Anders tall table lamp, is $169.95 from Beacon Lighting

A dramatic chandelier makes a statement in any room of the home

on the market – contemporary, traditional, elaborate, delicate, robust, large and small. Don’t skimp when it comes to lighting – spend the extra money and get a lamp or chandelier that will add to the style of your home, not detract from it. The trend now in overhead lighting is to go big. Lots of home owners are now after hefty fixtures to hang over kitchen islands or in entries because these large-scaled pieces bring a lot of drama. You can find beautiful chandeliers and lamps at antiques stores or markets. Simply have one rewired, and you have a treasure. Or, if you’re creative, you can make a lamp out of something unique, like an antique bird cage. Spray-paint it a fun colour and have it fitted with a bulb and chain and you have a novel light. AAP

Mood lighting sets the tone of any space

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 This weekend favours lively conversation and creative communication, as you enjoy the company of someone special. But if you don’t think before you speak, you could put your foot in it!

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Innovative ideas will take you places, especially at work. But keep your cool – and avoid blurting out things that you’ll later regret. Exercise is a great way to let off steam.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 If you accept people and situations at face value – especially where finances are involved – you could end up sadly disappointed. You’re in the mood for travel and adventure.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Aim to get the balance right between being busy out there in the big wide world, and spending quiet solo time in a place that has special meaning for you. You need some R&R!

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 With Uranus shaking up your relationship zone, you’re keen to revitalise a stale romance – or look for an exciting new one. And is it time to introduce new faces to your peer group?

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Positive Mercury/Uranus aspects promise a wonderful weekend. It’s time to seek out different forms of entertainment, as you shake up your usual routine.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Enthusiasm is high but don’t jump to hasty conclusions and then pass on incorrect information. Get your facts straight, otherwise mix-ups are likely – especially with children and friends.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 A loved one may surprise you by making an unpredictable move. Don’t assume the old way of doing things is the best. It’s time for Capricorns to stay abreast of new trends.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Your bohemian side shines brightly this weekend, as Mercury/Uranus aspects stimulate your eccentric, experimental side. Tap into the adventurous Aquarius you were born to be!

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Don’t play the Piscean martyr. If someone upsets you, then don’t be afraid to speak up and tell them how you feel. Aim to limit alcohol, as it will increase your over-sensitivity.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 The moon’s in fellow earth sign Virgo this weekend, so strive to tackle practical tasks like cooking, gardening, building and DIY projects. Try viewing an old problem in a new way.

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 With Uranus in your sign, your motto for the moment is from birthday great Coco Chanel: “How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone.”
