120 visitors on the day
Working together
After being with another agency that marketed my home in a different publication, it was a lovely surprise when Darren Rix stepped in and took control of the sale of my home. The level of enquiry and the number of offers jumped from day one, with the result being $300,000 above what the previous agent told me I should accept. Thank you Darren and thank you to My Property Preview.
We sold 25 David Street, Nambour and 16 Cardinal Court, Palmwoods, both under the hammer. At 16 Cardinal Court we had an excellent turnout of around 50 people and three registered bidders.
Living Choice is one of Australia’s largest private retirement village companies, with seven retirement villages in two states and two more on the drawing board. Much of Living Choice’s success can be attributed to its innovative marketing and advertising campaigns, including print. Living Choice has positioned itself as ‘the new standard in retirement living’ with its upmarket villages offering ‘resort living for the un-retiring’. In keeping with this image, we chose the glossy, big format pages of My Weekly Preview to advertise the Village Show Day at our Twin Waters village. We also distributed f yers in the local area. We were thrilled to record more than 120 visitors on the day. It was a f tting result to reward our residents after all the hard work and preparation they put into the day. We will continue to use My Weekly Preview to advertise our open days and events in the future. Linda Hooper, Living Choice Australia
Thanks to the team at My Weekly Preview. We are very happy with the presentation of the magazine, the publication is fresh and is a great way for us to educate or clients in an entertaining and informative read. We are pleased with the response and look forward to working with you in the future.

More success An ideal magazine We have been dealing with the MWP team since the launch of their new, weekly lifestyle magazine My Weekly Preview earlier this year. The magazine has def nitely f lled the gap that existed for Sunshine Coast businesses, and provides a great mix of local news and other quality content, making this an ideal magazine for our weekly advertising. Tristan Kurz, Coastline BMW
My Weekly Preview continues to be one of the leading and successful elements of our marketing strategy at Sunshine Cove. Time and time again, we have found this publication to deliver us the best results, with locals and visitors alike taking the time to read the publication cover to cover. On a personal level, we recently advertised our home in MWP. Even our agent commented on the quality and number of enquiries. We sold during our second week advertising. Thanks again MWP.

Fantastic results Another fantastic auction result at 4 Canmaroo Avenue, Nambour thanks to MWP. Four ads yielded 60-plus inspections and f ve registered bidders with the property sold under the hammer on the day! The buyer and sellers were stoked with the result! Great presentation
Thanks My Weekly Preview – I received a fantastic response to my advertising, not only did it improve our brand awareness but we saw a direct increase of around 20 per cent in our shirt laundering service. I would certainly use My Weekly Preview for my advertising again.
We were MPP fans and now are MWP fans! Enquiry has trebled during our auction campaign with MWP and all our inspections have been generated through the magazine. We are impressed with the high standard of presentation!

Great feedback
Thanks to a combination of good internet advertising and fantastic exposure to buyers through My Weekly Preview, we recently had some great results, especially for my sellers in Aroona. A four-week campaign brought 33 buyers to four open homes and we had 14 private inspections. With this exposure and buyer competition of course the result was a sale. PRINT ADVERTISING WORKS.
The weekend of our f rst insertion in My Weekly Preview we received really good feedback from new and existing customers and even holiday-makers that had picked up a copy and visited the store, which is great for business. We are now on our f fth advert and f nd it a pleasure to work with the team – they make advertising stress free and the ads work. Sam and Naresh, Akasha Furniture & Homewares

Better results
What a team
We have been very pleased with the results from My Weekly Preview. The response has been much more noticeable than where we advertised previously. We received more feedback in the f rst eight weeks of MWP than we did over the preceding year of advertising.
Our recent auction at Baanya Street, Wurtulla certainly highlighted how effective promotion makes a big difference to the result. A four-week campaign exclusively in MPP delivered 21 groups through the open homes, an offer prior to auction day, 27 people in attendance with four registered bidders making 20 bids that netted the sellers a sale under the hammer $35,000 over the reserve. RE/MAX Property Services and MPP – what a team.

hey say you don’t appreciate your own parents until you become one yourself. I think that probably goes double for me. For most of my little man’s life I was a single mum. Understandably, my dad – who has three daughters – was (and still is) a big part of my son’s life. As a mum I have learned to appreciate the things about my dad that once would have annoyed me – like installing a new bathroom in my unit without asking me first, for example. Before he could walk my little man was crawling through my dad’s work ute, demanding to be carried while dad mowed the lawn, insisting on helping him wash the cars and plug in the drill. He gasps in mock horror when my father lets a swear word slip and punches him on the arm as a sign of affection. How much poorer those first few years would
have been for the junior Pearson (and for me) without his Pops around. It’s Father’s Day on Sunday and this week we celebrate four Coast dads in various phases of fatherhood. But to all dads, grandads, stepdads, in fact any man who plays the father role, have a great Sunday. September also marks the beginning of storm season, so in property this week on page 36 we get advice from the experts on protecting your assets from the sometimes unpredictable summer weather. September also means spring, and in My Style this week, on page 26, we’ve got some advice on spring cleaning the wardrobe. We touch on the tricky subject of modern Russian politics in agenda, on page 22, and show you how the Coast’s most successful business women spent their Saturday evening – that’s on page 10.

HAPPY FATHER’S PREVIEW For most men, being a good father is the most important job they’ll ever do. Four local dads share their stories. WORDS Jemma Pearson

ompared with many Sunshine Coast dads, Matt Clements is a late bloomer. The owner of Alexandra Headland’s Assembly Hair was 40 when wife Kristin gave birth to Reno more than six months ago. But she was worth the wait. “We tried for probably close to two years,” Matt says of the couple’s efforts to conceive. But they remained philosophical throughout, leaving it in “God’s time”. “We didn’t want to get stressed and we ended up going down the IVF route to give ourselves a better chance, but we only had to do it once,” Matt says. “It’s pretty taxing on your body and I was away for a good bit of it [Matt’s work obligations with Schwarzkopf had him travelling overseas frequently]. It was hard not being there with Kristin.” Still the relief must have been great when Kristin finally fell pregnant and now that Reno is part of their lives, Matt says his family feels complete. “We are not planning to have any more. We always felt right to have just the one. Even during the pregnancy, it felt like we had this little family.” Though he concedes in the future, “that could change”. Matt and Kristin will be heading overseas for work again next year, running courses for Schwarzkopf. Matt says they will be away for 10 days to two weeks at a time and Reno will be right there with them. “She is so placid. She is so amazing. When she isn’t asleep, she is smiling. I don’t think she has cried since she was eight weeks old. She sleeps from seven to seven – she is easy, so easy.” For those that know Matt, however, fatherhood has changed him. “We surfed a lot and worked hard – having Reno has put a few of those things in perspective.” He still puts in long hours at the salon but hopes in 2013 to have more time to be a dad. What would he change? “Not a thing. I could have five children if they were all like her. I have no idea what we did beforehand.”

etro Geyl from RealWay Property Consultants has had a few years to hone his fathering skills. The Caloundra-based real estate agent is father to Nick, 35, and Ben, 28, and grandfather to Luca, Nick’s three-year-old son. Like many grandfathers and their male grandchildren, Petro and Luca have a pretty special bond. “He was born on the same day as me,” says Petro. “Everyone reckons he is just like his grandad. Or his grandad is just like him.” Petro loves “bouncing him on my knee, though he’s getting a bit old to bounce on my knee now”. “But I am also a disciplinarian – he knows his boundaries with me; we have a good relationship.” Nick is expecting his second baby at Christmas, so Petro will be bouncing that knee for years to come. Petro became a dad at 26 years old and though he admits he may not have been financially ready to become a parent, he was certainly emotionally raring to go. “I always knew I would become a dad.” And he was determined to be a good one. “I had no father and no grandfather myself,” Petro says. “My father left when I was just one.” So how did that affect his parenting? “It caused me to not do what he did, which had its own burdens and joys.” Petro’s first marriage to the boys’ mother ended after 18 years and though it was far from an ideal relationship “I didn’t leave because of my experience”. His sons, says Petro, “are gorgeous souls and gentle but fierce men. They were spectacular kids – naughty, I think these days they call them ‘spirited’.” Grand-fatherhood is as natural as fatherhood for Petro, though like many grandparents he complains that he doesn’t see Luca as often as he’d like. Asked if he would change it for the world, Petro’s reply is emphatic, “Not for two worlds.”

ave Hawkins is MWP’s property ad manager and father to son Sam, 18, and daughters Georgie, 10, and Paige, eight. He has three beautiful children, but fatherhood hasn’t always been easy for Dave. He was 29 when his eldest was born. “Like all dads it was exciting waiting for the birth, you are full of hopes and aspirations, and I was really happy to have a boy as my firstborn.” But when Sam was born three months premature, “it did take a shine off”, says Dave. “It was really stressful. I would see all these fat pink babies and there was Sam, all skinny and the colour of a plum.” When his little boy was just two years old Dave’s relationship with Sam’s mum ended, and he saw Sam “every second weekend for the next 16 years”. Father and son are close, though. When Sam was still a toddler, Dave met his current partner Kath (another MWP team member). She fell pregnant five years into the relationship and Dave prepared himself for fatherhood a second time around. It was a devastating blow when Kath gave birth to a baby girl named Lindsay who was stillborn. “Kath really struggled,” says Dave. “We had planned to get married [but after the birth] we pulled the wedding forward.” It was a good distraction for Kath’s grief and on the first day of their honeymoon the couple discovered Kath was pregnant again. Georgie was born in 2001. Two years later, Paige followed, and it was around the birth of this child that they discovered Georgie had cerebral palsy. “After all we had been through, we were like, ‘are you kidding?’.” Georgie’s condition is relatively mild and she is a beautiful girl. Paige is cheeky and clever, and Sam is a younger version of his dad. “With an eightyear break between children, I think I became a much more mature, patient dad,” Dave says. “Young men are still kids themselves really. I found fatherhood the second time around much more pleasant.”

hen Jesse Davies became a dad to Tirzah (or ‘T’), it wasn’t a newborn baby he met for the first time, but a lively toddler. Jesse started a relationship with Tirzah’s mum Joanna about 18 months ago when Tirzah was one-and-a-half, and it wasn’t long before the little girl was referring to Jesse as ‘dad’. So what was it like starting a new relationship with not just Joanna, but her little girl? “Well you know I have never really thought about it,” says Jesse. “It was never a burden. It wasn’t such a shock, as I knew what I was getting into.” And it helps, says Jesse, that “Joanna is a fairly carefree”. Jesse and Joanna recently married, just after Tirzah turned three. But even before the couple tied the knot, Jesse says he was firmly in “the dad role”. It was a sharp learning curve, he says, “as I didn’t want to overstep my boundaries with Joanna, but now it is pretty good. We have gotten into our little routine. “Once Joanna and I got engaged it seemed more official, but even before we were married T started calling me ‘dad’. The weird thing is there is no one who she would have referred to as ‘dad’. She picked the word up out of nowhere.” For many men the thought of fatherhood in any form is daunting, but not for 22-year-old Jesse. “I always wanted to get married and start a family,” he says. A quick poll of parents around the MWP office shows that while parenting at any age can be challenging, three-year-olds can be particularly trying, however, Jesse isn’t fazed. “I’m fairly easygoing as is and open to change. But probably one of the biggest things is I was always independent, so having to share everything I own [was an adjustment].” Sticky iPhones aside, Jesse is not complaining. “It wouldn’t have been as easy if T wasn’t so outgoing and energetic.” So do Jesse and Joanna have plans for more? “Yeah definitely, it’s probably only a matter of time,” he says. “Joanna is studying and I am working so we are busy, but when things settle down, it would be good to have a little sibling for T.”
From all the team at My Weekly Preview to all the dads out there: have a fantastic Father’s Day this Sunday.

In Australia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the f rst Sunday of September, but in many countries it is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. Russians don’t recognise Father’s Day but instead celebrate Defender of the Fatherland Day. In Germany, Father’s Day is celebrated on the Thursday 40 days after Easter. It is also called Men’s Day or Gentlemen’s Day. In Spain, dad’s special day is observed on the Feast day of Saint Joseph, which is March 19.

happy with the decision, either. “The income we make on those days helps to keep the club afloat and with the rising costs of electricity and water, which used to be subsidised by the council, we cannot afford to lose any event which supplies income to keep our lifesavers on the beach and [keeps] our beach safe,” says Anne Croad, lifesaving administrator at Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club. Divisional councillor Russell Green, who voted against the ruling, tabled a paper petition at the August 23 meeting signed by 1608 people from the Peregian Beach village area and an online petition with 2182 signatures of those in support of the event remaining as it is. In comparison, a council spokesperson says 22 complaints have been lodged with the council in the past 12 months from local Peregian Beach residents.
rganisers of Peregian Originals say they are “gutted” by a decision made by the Sunshine Coast Council to reduce the number of annual concerts held at Peregian Beach from 24 to 12. In response to complaints from a small number of local residents, the council ruled that as of January 2013, Peregian Originals will run on the first Sunday of the month only, with an alternative location to be found for the third Sunday of the month. “We’re very disappointed and we’re not prepared to just sit back and take what has been handed down to us,” says Anita Sweeney, president of East Coast Originals. “The more we look at it, the more we’re seeing the faults in what was decided and the lack of regard for community wishes.” Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club and local businesses are not

The issues raised were traffic and parking, noise, litter, environmental impact on a local park, use of a park by an event of this size, frequency of the event, accessibility to the park on event days, alcohol consumption in a public place, and use of a public space for commercial gain. “It wasn’t an outcome I supported,” says Green. “But the event does create an impact on people. Most of the people who live directly opposite the park have lived there for more than 20 years and their amenities are impacted. After a month you might get a bit cranky, but after 10 years you might be just a little bit angry. You have to be realistic
in understanding the issues they’re raising are valid as well.” The event will continue twice a month for the rest of the year to allow time to find an alternative location to hold the concerts, with Coolum and Cotton Tree being flagged as options. “Tickle Park at Coolum Beach has better facilities for holding larger numbers, and it’s a similar style community there, with lots of support for the event,” says Green. Sweeney says moving half the concerts to another location will dilute the brand and create logistical problems for the not-for-profit organisation, run by volunteers.

DON’T FRET OVER JULY ‘JOBLESS’ RATE
I
f you were concerned at recent reports in local media about the Sunshine Coast’s jobless rate skyrocketing from 5.3 per cent to 8.8 per cent in July, you can breathe a small sigh of relief. While times are still tough, it’s
highly unlikely the actual unemployment levels in the region rose by 3.5 per cent in the space of one month between June and July this year. The unemployment estimates reported for July are based on the monthly Labour Force Survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), which captures 0.33 per cent of the Australian population aged over 15 years, including 0.28 per cent of the Sunshine Coast population. Of the 880 people surveyed on the Coast, 77 would have indicated they were unemployed, but that doesn’t mean they had lost their jobs, according to the ABS. “Even though the unemployment rate has gone up, you shouldn’t look at that by itself because the employment rate also went up, and the unemployment figures going up are not people moving from employed to unemployed, it’s people moving from ‘not in the labour force’ to
‘looking for work’,” according to an ABS spokesperson. “There are three categories of unemployed: those looking for work, those not looking for work and those just coming into the labour force. So the rise in unemployment was driven by people looking for work rather than losing a job.” In addition, MWP understands most local and state governments do not use the monthly labour force survey results, but rather the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate issued every quarter, which is smoothed over a 12-month period to cater for peaks and troughs that occur – such as within and outside high tourism visitation periods. “The July figures are the raw original data,” says the ABS spokesperson. “There is no smoothing of figures to remove irregular movements.” The June quarter seasonally adjusted unemployment figures are due to be released in October.

FIJIAN GINGER COULD ARRIVE IN TWO MONTHS
Fijian ginger with the potential to infect local crops could arrive on our shores in two months, says the Sunshine Coast’s largest ginger grower, Shane Templeton of Templeton Ginger Eumundi. The Federal Department of Agriculture has released a risk analysis as a precursor to importing Fijian ginger. Templeton says the analysis is inadequate and could lead to local crops being infected with diseases such as Pythium. “The risk mitigation measures are very loose,” says Templeton. “It doesn’t really take into account
more than good farming management practices; they’re not really quarantine measures.” “There is a very real risk Fijian ginger could infect our crops,” says Templeton. “My rough guess if they rubber stamp it is it could happen in just under two months’ time.” The Sunshine Coast’s approximately 15 ginger growers supply 80 per cent of Australia’s ginger – more than 6000 tonnes a year. Our domestic market is adequately supplied year-round, leaving many questioning why a proposal of this kind would go ahead. “Fiji put an application in to import ginger and because of the free-trade agreement, the government has been obliged to do a risk assessment on it, and that’s not adequate.” Mayor Mark Jamieson has thrown his support behind Sunshine Coast farmers fighting to protect the local ginger industry.

Coast lifeguards: why weren’t we consulted?
N
o senior lifeguards were consulted about Sunshine Coast Council’s decision to outsource our council-run lifeguard service to the Australian Lifeguard Service, a division of Surf Life Saving Australia, according to a senior lifeguard who spoke with MWP on Tuesday. “The mayor was on ABC Coast FM and stated, after being asked who was consulted in regards to this, that senior lifeguards were consulted and that is not correct,” says the lifeguard, who asked not to be named. “No senior lifeguards were consulted. The only person who was consulted was Scott Braby, the lifeguard manager. He’s a manager and wasn’t on the beach, he was up in Tewantin. Who has given them all the information? Where have they gotten this information that Surf Life Saving Australia is
the only organisation that could take on this contract? “Everyone is a bit shellshocked – nobody knew anything. We’ve been kept in the dark the whole time. Everyone’s very disappointed in our higher management that we haven’t been supported or consulted. They haven’t advertised us to the council in a positive way.” Local lifeguards have expressed concern the Australian Lifeguard Service has limited experience in the ocean conditions we have on the Coast, with most of their lifeguards reportedly deployed in flat water areas, such as Southbank in Brisbane. They are also upset about a $6 an hour pay cut and no job certainty after June 2014 if they take up jobs with the organisation. “What they’ve promised until 2014 is fair, but it’s not just what they’ve offered it’s how it’s all been done. We’ve been kept in the dark, nobody has known about it, the ratepayers of the Coast didn’t know about it. We feel the council haven’t been given the whole picture.”
…and enjoy the experience.
Regional General Manager for Queensland, Telstra Business, Jason Law says: “After looking at many business courses around Australia I found the best all-round business masters right on my doorstep, here on the Sunshine Coast. I couldn’t go past the quality and the value. It’s great.”
Manager–Strategy and Culture, Steps Group Australia, Cheryl Sykes says: “I’d been looking for a flexible way to study for my business masters for ages and it was here on the Coast all the time; an exciting program, great teaching and support and a gorgeous environment, what more could you ask for—I loved it!”

SHORTEN RULES OUT WELFARE PAYMENT INCREASE
P
eople on unemployment payments are struggling to make ends meet but the Federal Government has no plans to increase the Newstart Allowance, Workplace Minister Bill Shorten says. A Senate committee is on Monday holding an inquiry in Melbourne into whether the level of the Newstart and Youth Allowance payments are enough or hamper welfare recipients getting jobs. Shorten says the payment level will “stay where it is for the time being”. “I’m not going to stand here and say I think life is easy for people on Newstart Allowance, because I don’t think it is,” he told reporters in Canberra. “The Newstart Allowance is incredibly low and would be difficult to live on.” Earlier on Monday Anglicare Australia, Catholic Social Services Australia, the Salvation Army and UnitingCare Australia called for new independent commission to set the level of unemployment and student welfare benefits. The group want an independent remuneration tribunal, similar to the one that makes determinations on wage rises for judges and politicians, established. Shorten told reporters he was not immediately aware of the call but would consider the idea. The Senate committee has been told the Newstart unemployment allowance is less than two-thirds of the age pension in Australia. The Combined Pensioners and Superannuants Association (CPSA) of NSW told the inquiry that because of different indexation methods used, Newstart had dropped from being 91 per cent of the age pension in 1997, to just 65 per cent in 2012. People on Newstart receive a base of $245 a week. AAP

ixteen members of the Amish religious sect are facing trial in Ohio for alleged hate crimes, charged with cutting off the beards and hair of critics of their faction leader. The case has shown an unwanted spotlight on a Christian group that is known primarily for its rejection of modern conveniences and whose tenets include living apart from the non-Amish world as much as possible and resolving their disputes internally. The defendants are charged with terrorising their fellow believers with scissors and razors in an internal dispute over practices of their faith. Federal prosecutors have charged them with hate crimes, conspiracy and tampering with evidence. Federal prosecutors say Samuel Mullet snr, 67, instigated the attacks between September and November 2011. The victims included Myron Miller and his wife, Arlene, who were awakened in the middle of the night

Samuel Mullet snr by five or six men with long beards and hats standing in the light of an oil lamp at their door, according to the New York Times. The attackers pulled Miller out of his house and cut off his long black beard, a symbol of men’s Amish faith. The defendants are members of a clan led by Mullet, who is charged with having instigated the others to cut the beards and hair of five other Amish believers for their failure to follow his dictates. BEHIND THE

PREVIEW The harsh government crackdown on three members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot has exposed a level of political repression in Russia that harks back to darker days.

his has been a difficult year for Yevgeny Arkhipov, even by his tough standards. Earlier this month, security service officials collared the opposition-minded human rights lawyer as he was boarding a plane to attend a conference in Ukraine. His transgression was to have owed $100 in alimony. Mystified, he returned home only to be informed by the authorities that he owed nothing. He believes the debt was made up as a pretext to stop him from helping raise the profile of the country’s eight-month protest movement abroad. “They’re worried the international community will accuse them of carrying out political repression,” he said, wearing a suit in his small four-desk office overlooking a railway station in central Moscow. “They have a blacklist and I’ve ended up on it.” Friday’s sentencing of three members of the feminist punk group Pussy Riot to two years in jail did much to call attention to Russian authoritarianism by dominating headlines around the world. But the apparent moves against 33-year-old Arkhipov show the authorities are also acting more quietly behind the scenes. They were the latest in a series of steps that, taken together, look very much like a co-ordinated crackdown on what’s being billed as the political awakening of Russia’s burgeoning middle class. It began soon after Putin returned to a third term as president in May. Last month, parliament rushed to pass three bills widely criticised as tools for quelling dissent on the last day before its summer break. The State Duma increased fines for breaking laws governing protests, recriminalised slander and libel and labelled NGOs receiving non-Russian funding “foreign agents”. One of the measures reversed an initiative passed seven months earlier under then-President Dmitry Medvedev, who has styled himself as a liberal. The actions followed moves against some of the country’s leading opposition figures, whose houses were searched before they were called in for questioning.

SCA N D AL Investigative Committee, an agency that has taken the lead in targeting opposition figures. Alexander Bastrykin is also close to Putin, so accusing him of illegally owning a property empire abroad was highly risky territory. Days after Navalny published documents that appeared to corroborate the allegation, investigators accused him of embezzling $500,000 from a state timber company when he was an adviser to a regional governor. The charges, which carry a punishment of up to 10 years in jail, date back to 2009 in a case that’s been opened and closed numerous times for lack of evidence. Navalny’s firebrand rhetoric has helped thrust him to the front of a protest movement that unites disparate groups by their resentment of Putin. Masha Lipman of the Carnegie Moscow Center says charging such a high-profile figure would
Pussy Riot supporters out in force Participants of the 68th European Alpbach Forum take part in a spontaneous performance in solidarity with the Russian punk band Pussy Riot in Alpbach, Austria, last week. The three members of the band, who were jailed for two years for insulting President Vladimir Putin, will appeal the sentence, says their lawyer. The sentencing has sparked protests in countries such as Austria, Poland, Switzerland and Russia. Australia’s government joined other nations such as the US, Germany and Britain in denouncing the sentences as disproportionate to the crime. The Moscow court found Pussy Riot’s Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina, and Ekaterina Samuzevich guilty of hooliganism and inciting religious hatred after the trio and two other people sang a punk anthem in Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral invoking the Virgin Mary to remove the president. The Russian Orthodox Church described the performance Pussy Riot supporters unite as sacrilege but also requested they be granted clemency.

require at least tacit approval by the Kremlin. “I don’t believe a development as politically sensitive as this one is unfolding without the Kremlin’s knowledge,” says Lipman. “It falls so smoothly into the general trend.” The opposition plans to hold its next major rally on September 15. Turnout will provide an important gauge of the clampdown’s impact. Arkhipov, who sides with more radical members of the opposition such as the writer Eduard Limonov, believes moves to crush moderate factions will begin in earnest after the summer lull. He’s pessimistic about the effect it will have on the protests’ future. “They’ll tighten the screws completely by New Year’s,” he said before referring to the opposition’s symbol, a white ribbon. “There will be nothing left of it but shreds.” AAP

However, Arkhipov’s recent troubles indicate the clampdown is also aimed at lesser-known figures. Founder of the Association of Lawyers for Human Rights and an outspoken Kremlin critic, he has gained a reputation as a staunch rights defender. He has represented groups of various leanings, including the Primorye Partizens, a band of vigilantes in Russia’s Far East, and activists arrested during a notorious nationalist riot steps from the Red Square in December 2010. Now he is defending an activist who was arrested during protests against Putin’s inauguration that escalated into violent clashes with riot police on May 6. Arkhipov credits himself with winning the release of one of the defendants by exposing procedural violations by the authorities, but he says he’s now being silenced. “The investigators made us sign an agreement not to divulge secret information from the investigation,” Arkhipov says. “What does that mean? That to the end of our days neither I nor my team can speak about evidence about our clients’ innocence or official falsifications.” Lawyers at Arkhipov’s group are defending all 11 activists on trial in the case. The general crackdown is getting some attention at home. Nezavisimaya Gazeta echoed common opinion about its purpose in a recent article about pressure on opposition youth group leaders and lawyers headlined: ‘Fear as Medicine Against Rallies’. However, analysts are divided about whether the Kremlin is micromanaging the crackdown or whether political clans within the elite are pursuing opposition targets on their own initiative. Some believe personal revenge is playing a role. Among those targeted, the anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny has waged a public campaign against the powerful head of the

e manage risks in all aspects of our life every day. We seek a benefit while exposing ourselves to an adverse outcome. Investment risk is no different to, say, deciding whether to undergo a medical procedure with a chance of complications. We invest our capital seeking returns, with the risk that those returns may not materialise or the value of our investments may fall. Sensible investors take on investment risk only if they will be rewarded through higher returns. It is universally accepted by experienced investors that to gain
higher potential returns, you must take on a certain level of investment risk. This is known as the investment risk-return trade-off. The risk-return trade-off simply recognises that as you attempt to gain higher potential returns, you must inevitably accept greater potential risk. Sadly, some investors forget this lesson and seek higher returns while ignoring the investment risk they are undertaking, often with painful consequences. There are many definitions of risk and ways of quantifying the ‘riskiness’ of an investment. Ultimately, private investors often see risk in terms of the possibility of failing to meet investment goals or the possibility of losing money. These are good starting points for thinking about risk. However, to develop an appropriate investment strategy, a little more is required. We like to consider the variability of expected outcomes or returns. For example, consider an investor who requires a return of 10 per cent
on his or her investment. He concludes that there are two companies, one defensive and one growth, that should deliver a 10 per cent return from dividends and share price growth over the coming year, if circumstances remain favourable. Although both investments have similar expected returns, it is felt that if economic conditions were to deteriorate, the defensive company’s return would reach only nine per cent, while the growth company would fall in value by 10 per cent. Under strong economic conditions the situation would be reversed; the growth company would be likely to generate a 30 per cent return while the defensive would likely generate an 11 per cent return. TANIA WINS THE BIG PRIZE More than 300 Sunshine Coast business women, and a few of their male supporters, attended last Saturday night’s Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards in Caloundra. Emcees John Williams, the general manager of Southern Cross Austereo, and 4 Ingredients’ Kim McCosker, who was last year’s Outstanding Business Woman, provided lively commentary. In fact, despite the formality of the event, it was far from stuffy, with plenty of laughter and warmth in the room. Michelle Hamer, the chair of the Tania Hubbard judging team and a tirelessly hardworking member of the network, explained the judging process and the importance of the award sponsors. Incoming president Michalle Faulkner gave a warm speech and there was enthusiastic applause for all the finalists, who were recognised individually before each category winner was announced. The winners are carefully selected, and each woman gave a generous speech, praising the other nominees. Natalie Tink from Coast to Coast Media walked away with the first award for Young Business Woman of the Year. POMO director Lisa Harrison was up next, named Professional Business Woman of the Year, while Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s Vicki Taylor was honoured with the Micro/Small Business Woman of the Year award. Jainey Bennett from EzyFit Gym was named Corporate Business Woman of the Year. The final award, the Outstanding Business Woman of the Year, was then announced. Tania Hubbard, from Gluten Free Grain Free Company, was the worthy recipient of this prestigious prize.

Dealing with sticky social media situations Local law firm Aitken Legal is urging businesses on the Coast to ensure they have a social media policy in place and that their employees are aware of it and the consequences if it is breached. Aitken Legal managing partner Lisa Aitken says employers need to be mindful that some employees are using social media to express their displeasure with their work. “Generally speaking, the derogatory comments posted by employees on the social networking sites are generally made outside working hours,” she says. “This presents a problem because once again, we enter the blurry divide between private and public and the ability employers have to discipline employees for behaviour conducted outside working hours.” If businesses dismiss employees because of inappropriate social media activity, they risk being sued by the employee. “Employers should take caution when presented with a case of social network shaming and consider all factors prior to dismissing an employee, especially if they do not have any social media policies in place for the business,” Aitken says. More cases are occurring of employees contesting dismissal on social media grounds and filing unfair dismissal applications against their former employers. This highlights the need for Sunshine Coast businesses to review their current workplace policies and ensure employees are fully aware of them and the consequences of a breach. MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. GOING FOR GOLD
Starbucks soars, but not in Oz
PREVIEW ‘Education Through Libation’ is Dr Plonk’s motto. He has spent most of his legal drinking age life around wine, and through his many wine travels is focused on the fun, frivolity and the demystif cation of wine.
T
he Olympics provide a veritable treasure trove of material for serious commentators and comedians alike. David Letterman quipped, “The European countries were hoping to do well. If they win gold they can sell them as cash.” So everyone loves getting gold and it’s no different in the world of wine shows. Unlike getting gold in the synchronised swimming, gold in the wine show arena gives you plenty of bragging rights and a financial kick-along, enabling you to ramp up the price. One of the hitches is that all gold medals are not created equal. We all love the Duporth Tavern, but a gold medal at its wine show will not be as respected as a national or a capital city wine show. Even in those respected shows, there are various classes. And what’s really sneaky is when the wine marketer makes a gold sticker, suggesting it’s a great wine picked in the top 100 wines by some wine boffin, it really tarnishes the whole process. Show judging in Australia is tightly scrutinised internally and externally. The 20-point system is used in Australia; a maximum of three for colour, seven for nose and 10 for taste is given. Scoring 18.5 to 20 will give your wine that winning feeling and some bottles that are repeatedly shown end up having more medals than Michael Phelps. Trophies are given out to true category champions.
Of course the Yanks have to be bigger and better so they like a scoring system out of 100. James Halliday, the guru of Australian wine reviewing, also likes the 100 rating system. According to him, 94-plus is ‘sell your first male born child’ and below 80 is ‘give a bottle to your mother- in-law’. Other magazines such as Wine State use a five-star system. At the end of the day, we are relying on an expert’s opinion to enable us to make a better decision about how our wine buying dollar is spent. Wine preference is very personal and I think the best method is to try as many wines as you can, and that is why I rarely have to be asked twice to attend a tasting. Again, Mrs Plonk sees that as another excuse despite my efforts to convince her that I am on a fact finding mission. And after all, like a fisherman is drawn to lures more than the fish, shiny stickers of gold and silver will always catch our eye.
After building itself into the world’s largest coffee-shop chain through decades of high-octane growth in the US, Starbucks is now focusing more on global business. There’s plenty of room for growth. Starbucks’ domestic-international breakdown is lopsided, with nearly 11,000 stores in the US and fewer than 7000 in other countries. Now the chain says it plans to open 1200 stores in the next fiscal year, which begins in October – about three shops a day. Fewer than half of those will be in the US. About 500 of the new stores will open in Asia – more than half in China. “We’re in the early stages of growth in Asia,” says John Culver, president of Starbucks’ China and Asia Pacific region. “It represents the fastest and largest retail growth opportunity in the company’s foreseeable future.” In Australia, we love coffee and coffee shops. But Starbucks started pulling out several years ago, and now has only 22 locations in this country, down from 84 in 2008. AAP

STOP RESISTING
S
tudies have shown a majority of women – up to 80 per cent – rely solely on cardio-based exercise for health and fitness, and actively avoid resistance training with weights. While women may be afraid of bulking up, it’s actually the opposite that happens with age – a woman’s muscle tone deteriorates as she grows older, making active strength training even more important to increase muscle mass and improve bone density. Training with weights also has additional benefits: it can increase your resting metabolism, meaning fewer kilojoules will be stored as fat; and it can also help to reshape your body. According to AAP, studies performed by the American Council on Exercise and Fitness found the average woman will gain one kilogram of muscle and lose 1.5 kilograms of fat over two months, simply by resistance training two to three times per week. Liz Morris is club manager at Fernwood Maroochydore and says rather than causing huge, bulky muscles, resistance training is the key to gaining a lean, toned physique. “It is key to losing weight,” she says. “You can do cardio till the cows come home, but you won’t get that toned, healthy look [without weights].
“Women often come in and think they’re going to turn into Arnold Schwarzenegger, but that’s physically impossible. You would need to lift really heavy weights and eat 15 egg whites a day.” (Even then, women don’t have the high levels of testosterone that cause massive muscle gain in men.) Instead, Morris gives clients who are new to resistance training a basic, total body weight program, which works all the muscles in the body. “You can break it down and work particular muscles, but that’s too tricky to start with. So we give them a basic set of compound exercises which work multiple muscles at once, such as squats. We start with moderate to light weights and do two or three sets by 15 reps to start with,” she says. It is important to be regular and consistent with your exercise, and Morris says progression is the key. “You start with lighter weights and progress up to heavier ones, and you also progress in the difficulty of the exercise.” But before starting any resistance training program you need to learn correct posture and form, rather than attempting to copy what you’ve seen on The Biggest Loser. “You definitely need to be shown by a personal trainer that is qualified, to prevent injury,” Morris says.

SEE THE WORLD’S SHINIEST SUPERCAR WORDS Jemma Pearson
I
f you need to ask the price of the LFA, Lexus’ high-performance supercar, you can’t afford it. But Sunshine Coast locals don’t n’t have to venture to Europe or the US to att least take a look at one. Michael Stewart, the new vehicle sales manager anager at Lexus Maroochydore, will happily show you ou the one parked in his showroom. “What’s so special ial about this car is that only 500 were made globally bally – there are no more to be made, and of the 500, 00, the original allocation for Australia was only four. One of the fortunate things about the GFC, though, is that a lot of countries knocked back their allocation.” Australia ended up with 10, which is good news for one of Stewart’s customers, whose LFA is currently sitting in the Maroochydore showroom. “This one was the very first retail customer sale,” Stewart says. He met the customer years ago and he had the LFA on order for more than two and a half years. “He was number seven [on the list],” says Stewart. “The preceding six went to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.” But Stewart’s was the first retail customer to drive away in an LFA. At that time the paintwork was the original orange, but that was soon about to
change. “A company called Custom Exotic approached the owner to put a wrap on it and display it at a motor show. That process has never been done before.” While it looks like chrome, Stewart says it is actually a vinyl wrap. So, how does the owner take care of such an unusual car? “He gets our company to carefully and meticulously take care of it, that’s part of the deal.” Though Stewart says the owner does drive it around. “He has been up to the Coast and around driving it. He is certainly using it.” Though he is not a resident, the owner has businesses on the Coast, so locals may be lucky enough to see it driving by. “When we opened the building here [in November 2010] in Maroochydore, at the time the Sydney International Motor Show had just

finished,” Stewart says. “Because we had sold the first LFA, Lexus International let us open the dealership with the LFA in the showroom.” At the time, there were LFAs sitting in just three showrooms – in London, New York and Maroochydore. Whether this customised LFA is now worth more than its original $750,000 ticket price, we may never know. Stewart says the owner won’t sell because it is so rare. “It’s already a collector’s item.” Luckily for Coast locals, the owner isn’t precious about his new set of wheels and hasn’t hidden it away in a garage. For now, it is sitting in the Lexus Maroochydore showroom. But if you want to have a nosy, you might have to be quick. Stewart says the owner will be back soon to take it for a spin.

Palmer’s vintage car spend Sydney’s motor show next month sees the debut of the all-aluminium Range Rover. The fourth gen Rangie has lost 420 kilos through a new aluminium chassis structure. Official photos have just been released. It has new Evoque-style headlights and claims an extra 118 millimetres of extra rear legroom. No pricing adjustments have been released yet.
Queensland’s richest man pushed the prices of vintage cars up by more than $450,000 in one move. His team of bidders in Denmark paid $830,000 for a 1911 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost that was expected to sell for $350,000. Clive wants to display up to 50 cars at any time at his Sunshine Coast vintage car museum, yet to be built. Car enthusiasts are hoping Sunshine Coast Council lets this one through.

PEACE IN THE MIDST
OF THE STORM PREVIEW As we approach storm season on the Coast, it’s time to ask yourself how well prepared you are. In the event of a storm lashing your area, would you and your home be safe? WORDS Jarna Baudinette IMAGE Declan Passlow

he first day of spring marks the unofficial start of Queensland’s storm season, and local home owners are being advised to ensure their homes are ready for high winds, heavy rain and falling debris. It’s a timely warning, considering the Sunshine Coast has already copped a battering this year. On February 21 more than 10 homes and businesses in the hinterland town of Cooroy were severely damaged by a late afternoon storm – several buildings lost their roofs in cyclonic winds, while others were damaged by falling power lines or uprooted tree trunks. A number of homes and businesses also suffered extensive water damage, the effect of more than 78 millimetres of rain falling in a six-hour period. A month later, on March 22, another storm unleashed more than 300 millimetres in three hours, causing flash flooding that damaged homes, businesses and roads across the Coast. While it’s lucky no one was injured in either event, the clean-up and repair bills from storm damage can be significant – the Insurance Council of Australia estimates storms that lashed South-East Queensland and northern NSW in May 2009 cost a whopping $48 million. But that’s small change compared to the cost of storms that hit Brisbane six months earlier, which resulted in a reported insured loss of $309 million.
After a major storm event, many of these insurance claims come from average home owners, whose residential properties have been damaged by severe weather. The State Emergency Service (SES) regularly responds to calls for assistance when ceilings have collapsed or homes have been inundated. However, Carol Watkins, who is deputy local controller for the North Coast region, says often damage could have been avoided if home owners had taken simple precautions at the beginning of the storm season. Most of us have heard this advice before, but Watkins says a huge number of Queenslanders don’t heed the warnings and end up needing costly repairs. “Sometimes it is just the simple stuff that people need to do, such as keeping their gutters clear of leaves, not having little plants growing in their gutters,” Watkins says. “If water backs up into the gutters it can come into the ceiling and cause the ceiling to collapse – it is one of the biggest problems we see.” Falling tree branches also pose a serious risk. “In Cooroy we saw a lot of big trees uprooted across pathways, on houses,” Watkins says. While you can’t control the wind, you can do your part by keeping any limbs or branches that are close to the house trimmed, and by reporting any potentially dangerous trees to the council for M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

assessment. If the treetops in your street are getting too close to power lines, you can also notify Energex of the danger, before the first big storm of the season. Flash flooding is more difficult to prepare for, but Watkins says if your block slopes downwards and you’ve had trouble with water running down the driveway in the past, you should contact the SES and organise to collect some free sandbags. “You need to make sure you have a supply of sandbags on hand, to sandbag the garage and front door,” she says. The SES makes these available to the public and because they use river sand rather than beach sand, Watkins says when you’re done with them you can recycle them in the garden. Other advice for home owners? “During storm season, don’t keep things in your yard, like trampolines or furniture, that could potentially not only kill or injure someone but also cause damage to your property,” Watkins says. “And don’t forget your pets – it’s really important to have a plan for your pets.” This is especially the case if you live on acreage and have larger animals: dogs or cats may be able to wait out the storm inside the home, but horses or cattle have more difficulty finding shelter. While most storms are minor and pass fairly quickly, the past few seasons have shown the weather can be increasingly unpredictable. Watkins says it’s important for local families to prepare for the worst, even if it feels you’re being overly dramatic. This could be an unusually
A checklist for home owners: • Make sure your gutters are clear of leaves, branches and other debris, to prevent rainfall backing up and causing damage to your ceiling. • Check your insurance policy is up-todate and covers storm or f ood damage to your home. • Trim overhanging tree limbs and branches and notify the council or Energex of any potentially dangerous trees. • Put together an emergency kit containing a torch, batteries, a f rst aid kit and portable radio. • Make electronic back-up copies of important personal and household documents, in case these are damaged by weather. • Identify the safest place to shelter in your home and prepare an emergency evacuation plan. severe storm, a fire caused by lightning strikes or flooding which keeps you in (or out of) your home for days at a time. “You should have an evacuation plan, and everyone in your family should know what to do. It sounds so melodramatic, but it really is important,” Watkins says, using her own reasonably isolated home as an example. “We only have one way in and one way out, so we’ve had to look at what to do if a fire or cyclone came,” she says. “Put your mind to it and think about it. The best thing to do is to find the safest place, which is often the smallest room – the bathroom, laundry or toilet – because if the walls fall in they’re going to fall on themselves, not on you.” Along with NRMA Insurance, the SES has also been supporting the State Government’s ThreeDay Challenge program, an initiative of the Stormwise campaign designed to encourage Queenslanders to prepare for the possibility of being stranded in their homes for three days without food, power or water. Research by NRMA suggests only 10 per cent of Queenslanders have an emergency storm kit, containing a torch and working batteries, a first aid kit, a portable radio and important personal and household documents, packed and ready to go. Watkins says these items, along with three days’ worth of non-perishable food and fresh water, are crucial. Her final advice is, if you take the time to prepare your home now, you may prevent damage in a few months’ time. “Look after yourselves – think about your own home and safety,” she says.

ong known for providing some of the Coast’s most affordable new housing, Stockland is now offering some of the region’s best looking homes. Morcraft Homes’ latest display property at Stockland’s Brightwater community is now open on Yellow Fin Circuit, but house hunters will notice that it stands out from the crowd. The home features turrets, painted panels and columns, large timber posts, an oversized back deck and lots of tiling to add to the feeling of extra luxury.

CLICK TO INSPECT The property management team at First National Maroochydore is pioneering new software which allows tenants looking for a rental property to book property inspections online. Principal Rod McLean says the web-based software offers greater flexibility to prospective tenants, which means better results for landlords. “More choices of inspection times means more tenants attend inspections, so properties are rented faster, which means our owners are happier,” McLean says. “Tenants love the new system because they can book online at their leisure – 24 hours a day, seven days a week – for a time that suits their schedules. The days of setting one or two inspection times a week that suited the agent, rather than the tenant, are long gone.” McLean says the new system is already delivering promising results. “This month is shaping up to be another record month for us as we are on target to let 30 properties from more than 120 open for inspections, with most properties attracting at least two applications.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Sunday’s Mercury/Neptune aspects highlight your creativity plus your need to help others. But it also increases your tendency to delude yourself – and see what you want to see.
GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Logic goes out the window, as your emotions take over and you feel confused about your future direction. If you relax and go with the flow, it will take you where you need to go.
CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Are you uncertain whether to follow your head or your heart? You’ll feel better if you talk about the emotions that are inside. Pay close attention to your dreams.
LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 You may feel confused this weekend – especially about finances – so avoid making important decisions until you’re thinking more clearly. Creativity and inspiration are high on Sunday.
VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Don’t expect loved ones to behave rationally. Heightened emotions are likely, so it’s not a good idea to bring up sensitive subjects. It is a great time for a creative collaboration.
LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Romance is in the air this weekend. If you are attached, send a romantic text or organise a candlelit dinner. Single Librans – love and work are linked in luscious ways.
SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 You’ll be sensitive to the moods of those around you and will pick up their feelings like a sponge. So surround yourself with upbeat people who make a positive contribution.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 A workmate or loved one comes up with an unusual idea. Don’t make any spur-of-the-moment decisions Sagittarius. Sleep on it and let a fresh perspective emerge.
CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Be careful how you communicate with others this weekend – especially relatives and neighbours. Otherwise your words may be misinterpreted, and your meaning misconstrued.
AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 The more vague and evasive you are, the more confusing the weekend will be. Think things through, then communicate your ideas directly and honestly. Creative inspiration is high.
PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 A current situation is confusing but don’t let it mix up your moral radar. Stand your ground and be a firm fish. Then you’ll get you through the weekend without too many dramas.
ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 Your head is filled with idealistic plans for the future. You’ll need the co-operation of others to turn your dreams into reality. Use your imagination in positive ways.
