Things Families with College Bound Students Should Consider

(StatePoint) Transitioning to college life can be difficult on both students and families. From new expenses to a new lifestyle, being prepared for what lies ahead can help you avoid common bumps in the road. Here are five things families with college-bound students should consider: • Getting involved: Being away from home and making new friends can seem daunting. Encourage your student to get involved in school activities and events. From joining the campus paper to running for student government, there are a range of extracurricular opportunities that can lead to new friendships, help students maintain an active calendar and round out one’s classroom education. • Health and wellness: Late nights spent studying instead of sleeping, as well as crowded dorm rooms, can be a prescription for colds and flu. Check out on-campus and local health care options before your student gets sick. No one wants to scramble to research medical options when he or she isn’t feeling well. Many campuses offer student insurance. See what makes the most sense for your family. Locate a nearby pharmacist before visiting the doctor so you can provide that information at your appointment. • Financing College: College may be one of your family’s biggest investments to date. Whether that describes your family or not, there’s no doubt about it, higher education comes with a big price tag. It’s never too late in the process to seek out new financing options, even if your child is already away out school. From filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, to exploring private loans, free online resources can help guide you through the process. Check out resources designed for college-bound students and their families, such as Wells Fargo’s “5 Steps to Financial Aid” video series, which offers helpful advice on finding a scholarship, applying for loans, and more from “Mr. Fellows, your wiser college advisor,” at www.WellsFargo. com/fivesteps. • Staying in touch: You’re busy. Your kid is busy. But regular check-ins with your student can help you know that everything is going well. Set up a weekly appointment to chat by phone and get the scoop -- just make sure your student’s phone plan allows for Chase Fielder Victoria Castillo sufficient texting and calling. Mena High School Mena High School • Money management: For many students, college is the first time they will gain some financial independence. Set your kids up for success by teaching them how to establish a workable budget. A checking and savings account designed for college students can help them stay on track. You can review money-management tools for college students at www.WellsFargo. com. Don’t let the transition to college Alyssa Castillo Haley White catch your family off guard. Parents Mena High School Mena High School can make the transition easier for students by striking the right balance of “letting go” and staying involved.

Help College-Age Children Manage their Finances Better (StatePoint) Unfortunately, one of the most expensive times in one’s life, is when he or she tend to be the least financially savvy -college. But good money management during those years is the best way to keep a college career on path. Parents and guardians can help their children become more financially savvy. Families with college-age kids can help students improve their financial health: • As tuition costs continue to rise, it’s more important than ever to understand your college funding options. Completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form is the first step toward obtaining financial aid. Also, explore private loans through banks and private lenders with competitive rates that don’t require payments while you’re still in school. • Manage debt: Paying student loans on time is important. Avoid late fees and mounting interest by sticking to your repayment schedule. Even though some loan payments are deferred until college is over, the earlier you can proactively plan for this the better. Generally, if you aim to keep your loan payment to no more than 10-15 percent of your anticipated post-college income, you should be able to maintain a realistic repayment timeline, according to Wells Fargo, which provides discounts such as automatic payment enrollment and relationship discounts for students or cosigners who already have a student loan or qualifying consumer checking account with Wells Fargo. • Establish a budget. Whether your child is working and making their own spending money, or living on an allowance you provide, help them take better control of that money so they don’t create unplanned debt later on. Online tools, such as Wells Fargo’s Cash Flow Worksheet, can help students document what they are spending. If there are extra funds at the end of the month, parents can encourage students to consider boosting savings to cover future college expenses, spring break vacation with friends, and life after school. • Good credit is a must-have for most major life purchases. Students can start to build a credit foundation while still in school. Consider a card with a low-introductory rate that offers cash back on gas, grocery, and drug store credit purchases to free up more money for other necessities like textbooks and emergency situations. Encourage your student to actively monitor the account by signing up for mobile banking alerts. More resources for smart money management for college students and their families are available at blogs.WellsFargo.com/StudentLoanDown/. A higher education and a financial education can go hand in hand. Help your child make smart financial decisions amidst the newfound freedom of college life.

How to Plan for Your Child’s College Education (StatePoint) Planning for life’s major financial hurdles is critical and when it comes to college, a plan can have a dramatic influence on how families are able to finance a degree. That said, only 38 percent of American families today have developed a plan to pay for college, according to the 2014 “How America Pays for College” report by Sallie Mae and Ipsos. What’s more, only 40 percent of American families with college aspirations have a contingency plan in case of an unexpected event, which one-third of families typically encounter. For many families, creating a financial plan or even starting to save for college can be daunting. But those who do strategize a plan statistically borrow less, making it especially critical for families who have, or will have, two or three kids attending college at the same time. Luckily, many resources are available to help demystify the process, and they’re free. For instance, many high schools have a career center and guidance counselors who can offer information about specific schools and scholarship opportunities. Online tools can also prove a valuable resource. For example, Sallie Mae has launched a suite of new, user-friendly tools, including a College Planning Calculator where families can Go create a customized plan to pay for college, as well as a scholarship database with more than $18 billion in combined scholarships. These tools are on the company’s new “plan for in the direction of your college” section of its website at Salliemae.com/planforcollege. Things You Should Never Say in a Job Interview

(StatePoint) Are you having trouble landing a job and you’re not sure why? The right skills and an impressive resume may get you an interview, but getting hired is another story. Experts say it’s all about presenting your character, personality, abilities and values in a positive, relatable light that is attractive to employers. “There’s no such thing as the perfect response to any question in a job interview,” says Andrea Kay, career columnist and consultant, and author of the new book, “This is How to Get Your Next Job: An Inside Look at What Employers Really Want,” (AMACOM). “But what you talk about in the interview could cost you the job offer if you aren’t careful. These are the top five things Kay says you should never talk about or say in a job interview: • Don’t talk about things you can’t back up. Before you state your claim to a quality that sets you apart, think it through. Just saying you’re a great team player or terrific problem solver doesn’t make it so, even if it’s true. Discuss where, how, and exactly what you did that made you so effective. Be ready to cite one or two examples of how you’ve done what you say you can do. • Never say “I have good people skills.” The words are so overused they mean nothing. Consider what it is you do that makes you effective when dealing with others. Are you good at working through difficult issues with co-workers? Do you have a knack for writing and talking to customers in a way that explains things? Tell interviewers about that instead. • Never say “I just want to learn.” Employers aren`t in business to teach, but rather to deliver a service or product. An interview is an opportunity to show an employer how you can apply what you know to the business. So rather than focus solely on your eagerness to learn, tell an interviewer how you will use the skills you have begun to develop to solve problems. • Avoid too much personal information that has nothing to do with your qualifications. Don’t talk about why you need the job (even if you do have a hard-luck story about sick children or a spouse whose been laid off). Don’t talk about politics, religion or sexual preferences. When a person can’t leave personal issues at home, it makes an employer wonder: does he lack the necessary maturity and good judgment? Is her personal life such a wreck that she may not be dependable? • Don’t talk about irrelevant things that pop into your head. To be less impulsive, literally practice interviewing. Slow down, count to five, and give yourself a chance to consider how your comment will sound. More job search tips and information from Kay can be found at www.AndreaKay.com. If your search for employment has been frustrating, consider your interviewing technique. A few tweaks to your approach could mean a fantastic job offer.

Turning Your Passion Into a Career (StatePoint) There’s nothing better than getting paid to do what you love, but few people know how to turn their interests into careers. “Turning your passion into a career requires unreasonable and unrelenting pursuit of your goals. It’s about mapping out what you want to do and planning a route to get there” says Lee Witt, a musician, corporate consultant and author who successfully changed careers in midlife. In his new book, “The BrickHouse Band: How An Ordinary Mid-Life Couple Created A Business Phenomenon,” Witt reveals how he and his wife, while busy with full-time careers,

founded a band that became one of the most successful corporate and casino cover bands on the West Coast. “It’s not enough to want something; you have to plan well,” he advises. KNOW YOUR DESTINATION Many people know what they like, but few have clear visions of what they want their lives to look like. You have to know your destination before you can map out how to get there. Does successfully living your passion mean making millions? Critical acclaim and recognition? Helping others? Figure this out first and then plan your route. Start by making a list of experiences you’ve had in your desired field and any marketable skills that came from these experiences. This will help you be realistic about the resources you have, those you’ll need, and the actions required to bridge the gap between the two. KNOW YOUR ROUTE With your destination in mind, create a mission statement or vision plan. This will help clarify your goals. “The most important question you should always be asking yourself is ‘Is what I’m doing now advancing me towards my destination?’” says Witt. “This will help you prioritize responsibilities and commitments.”

Turning Your Passion Into a Career (CONT. FROM PAGE 27)

Most importantly, beware the “shiny object syndrome.” This happens when you’re traveling your desired route and get distracted by a shiny new idea, project or person. When this happens, Witt suggests you remind yourself about where you want to be and confer with your career map. If this is an unauthorized stop, keep moving! Rest and Re-Fuel

While you don’t want to get distracted from your destination, you will need to stop and re-fuel, regardless of your journey. You may even want to sightsee for a while by settling into a comfortable job to gain experience you need. But passionate professionals know rest stops are for re-fueling, not unpacking. Your fuel for your new, passion-filled career will consist of the reasons behind it. Is it for money? For love? To serve the planet? For recognition? None of these reasons is right or wrong, but knowing your reasons will keep you going when the going gets tough, says Witt. More tips on turning your passion into a career can be found on Witt’s website www.BrickHouse Leadership.com.
