AFMC Announces Support of Child Abuse Prevention April is Child Abuse Prevention month and leading health care nonprofit Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care (AFMC) is spreading the message that everyone can help make great childhoods happen in their community. 9 Years Later, The Pulse Remembers BY ERICA MELTON • news@mypulsenews.com Those who resided in Mena on April 9, 2009 will never forget the deadly and destructive tornado that left three dead, thirty injured, and over 600 homes destroyed, as well as many millions of dollars in damage to local businesses, industry, and public buildings. At 7:24 p.m. that day the National Weather Service in Little Rock issued a Tornado Warning for parts of Polk County north of Mena. At 8:01 p.m. a warning was issued for Mena. 9 Years ago the landscape, lives and awareness of Mena, Arkansas were changed forever. The grace, kindness and good that mankind can accomplish was witnessed, when the hearts of men were touched by the scene that unfolded on television screens all across America. Mena and Polk County united and it’s people pledged to rebuild and show uncommon strength. In this issue “we remember, reflect and honor” that day when our breathes stopped momentarily as the unthinkable transpired, in our very own hometown. This is not a story of defeat, but one of finding strength where none seems present.
