The Mena/Polk County Area Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1898. Polk County has a very diversified economic base, which includes: tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, forestry, aviation, and retirement. The purpose of the Mena/Polk County Area Chamber of Commerce is to advance the welfare and prosperity of our area so that its citizens and all areas of its business community shall prosper. Our focus is given to the economic, civic, commercial, cultural, industrial, recreational, and educational interests of the area. We serve the business community through our many business service programs, events, and committees, always striving to find additional ways to serve our members.

Here in Polk County, we like to think we are pretty special. Steeped in history and strong in community, our area boasts natural wonders such as the East to West running Ouachita Mountain range and the Class V rapids of the Cossatot River. Mena is the seat and undisputed capital of the Ouachitas, Here you can find an emerging arts district, mountain trails to hike, clear streams to play in, top notch accommodations, and a unique shopping experience all wrapped up in Southern charm and hospitality. We are home to an internationally owned company, several world renowned artists, and our “Castle in the Sky”, Queen Wilhelmina which was named after a Dutch railroad investor’s wife. The Mena/Polk County Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1898 and is currently made up of 266 members. The Chamber provides services and representation to our members, along with hosting networking functions, professional development workshops, and special community events throughout the year. We consider ourselves a small town chamber striving to accomplish big city chamber goals through the dedication and hard work of our staff, board of directors, volunteers, and member businesses. Being a resident of Polk County for nearly 21 years, I have seen faces and businesses come and go, but never before have I seen or felt the kind of energy that our small town is generating in its race to revitalization. As you read through this magazine, you will learn more about the wide array of amenities and resources available to the residents and business owners in our community. scenic • Shady Lake- This scenic 25 acre lake situated in a remote mountain setting is home to the Historic Shady Lake Dam. Shady Lake is located southwest of Mena on the southern fringe of Ouachita National Forest. The lake itself is roughly crescent-shaped and was created in 1935 with the assistance of enrollees from the CCC, particularly by members from Company 742 stationed at Camp F-4 (situated within the community of Shady). The dam measures 130 feet (40 m) long and 40 feet (12 m) high across the Saline River. The dam, along with seven other CCC-built structures, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The developed facilities are located on the north side of the lake, and include four camping loops, a swimming area, fishing pier, amphitheater, and other recreational facilities. Comfort facilities consist of 50 camping units including 19 units with water and electricity and one with full hookups, bathroom facilities with warm-water showers, and flush toilets. A central feature of the beach area is its CCC-built bathhouse, a rustic log structure with novelty siding, which includes changing areas at the ends, and an open picnic area in the middle. A second CCC-built picnic shelter is located north of the dock. Other CCC-built structures in the recreation area include the diving platform, amphitheater, caretaker's house, and two stone bridges. The first bridge crosses the South Fork on the forest road east of the lake, and is a stone arch structure built over a metal culvert. The second bridge carries part of the campground loop road across East Fork, just north of the lake.

The majestic Talimena National Scenic Byway is gorgeous throughout any season and offers its natural beauty year round, with the most popular season of autumn, showcasing the fall foliage. The byway spans 54 miles between Mena, Arkansas and Talihina, Oklahoma, which both serve as the “Gateway Cities” to this national attraction. Along the drive you will find numerous stops for some of the most breathtaking scenery this area has to offer, and not to mention the highest peaks around for night time star gazing. Located 13 miles from Mena, you will find the Queen Wilhelmina State Park and Lodge, “The Castle in the Sky”. Newly remodeled Queen Wilhelmina lodge offers breathtaking views atop of Arkansas’ second tallest peak. The 1.8 million acres of the Ouachita National Forest and surrounding area comes alive with brilliant vivid color in the fall months. Oranges, reds, yellows and greens dot the landscape with vibrant color. A relaxing drive just about anywhere in Mena/Polk County will energize your visual senses with spectacular sights of the rolling hills and deep valleys of color. A popular way to enjoy the fall colors is to take a leisurely drive or motorcycle ride along the Talimena National Scenic Byway, or hike the many Ouachita trails throughout the Cossatot River State Park or Queen Wilhelmena State Park. Whichever you choose, you will enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery the Ouachitas have to offer, be sure to bring your camera. Knowing when the peak color will occur is challenging, but here is what we do know: the majority of the hardwoods will peak, depending on weather, anywhere between the last two weeks of October and the first two weeks of November. The state website www.Arkansas.com, with the help of their color spotters, provides visitors with a weekly fall color update beginning in late September.

Built in 1896, the restored station houses historical displays, railroad memorabilia and “A Ouachita Portrait” exhibited collection of drawings from local Monta Black Philpot.

This 12-mile stretch of natural area along the wild Cossatot River boasts the best whitewater float in mid-America. South of Mena you can find Cossatot Falls, a rugged canyon that challenges canoeists and kayakers with its Class IV and V rapids, when the water levels are up. Here in this wild natural area, the river drops 33 feet in elevation within 1/3 of a mile. Late winter to early spring is peak whitewater paddling season. The park offers hiking trails of different lengths and difficulties as well as hosting an annual half-marathon trail race. A 15,000 square foot visitor and education center is located in Wickes and features a large exhibit gallery, two classroom/lab rooms, a wildlife viewing area, gift shop, and park administrative offices. The park also has numerous camping facilities located within its boundaries. For more information about outdoor sports and extreme adventure opportunities in Arkansas's state parks, visit: www.AdventureStateParks.com. With easy access to the Ouachita National Forest and State Parks, visitors and residents to this area are presented with many recreational resources. Over 600 miles of trails located in the Ouachita Mountains provide unique adventure opportunities for ATV/ORV riding, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and more. The many lakes, rivers and streams provide for water sports, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Enjoy the year round hunting and fishing opportunities in the Ouachita National Forest. Popular trail systems and attractions within the Ouachita National Forest include: Albert Pike Recreation Area, Bard Springs, Caney Creek Trails. Fouche Mountain Trail, Little Missouri Fall, Shady Lake Recreation Area, Sugar Creek Trail, and the Wolf Pen Gap Trail Complex. Boasting 35 miles of looped trails that attract ATV/OTV riders from all over, the Wolf Pen Gap Trail Complex leads riders through an array of areas and features high mountain vistas. The trail passes the unique 2-footed oak tree and an abandoned mine shaft with loops that connect to accommodate riders who want to vary the length of their riding experience. The area has been undergoing a revitalization which includes a streetscape project as well as large scale murals adorning local businesses. It is also the location of the Ouachita Arts Celebration held in November that attracts artisans and visitors from far and wide. If you are in the mood for entertainment, the Ouachita Little Theatre provides top notch shows year round. Shopping more your style? Mena Street as well as the adjacent blocks is home to many retail businesses. Antiques, furniture, home goods, clothing, and fine art are just a portion of the offerings you will find while strolling through downtown. Stop in for a bite to eat or a cup of coffee at one of our cafĂŠs and eateries. No trip to our Arts District would be complete without popping by to peruse the exhibits at The Mena Art Gallery or visiting the Historic KCS Depot which houses the local museum and the famous Ouachita Portrait Collection.

Polk County, Arkansas was organized in 1844, making it the 48th county in Arkansas. The county is located in western central Arkansas with a current population of just over 20,000. Polk County was named for the new president of the United States, President James Knox Polk.

No matter where you choose to visit or settle down, Mena/Polk County, Arkansas is a peaceful place surrounded by majestic natural beauty.

The county has a total area of 862 square miles, that is accented with long, narrow ridges of folded rock, large fertile valleys and mountains covered with oak, and pine trees that all make up the equisite landscape of the county. Nearly half of Polk County lies in the Ouachita National Forest. Rich Mountain, the county’s most prominent landmark, has a peak of 2, 861 feet, and contains, in a single square mile, more species of wild plants, flowers, and weeds in their natural state than can be found anywhere else in the word on a similar track of land. Many creeks and rivers are scattered through the county including Lake Wilhelmina, the Cossatot River and the Ouachita River. With 28 locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Polk County is rich with history. The City of Mena is the county seat, where you will find the Historical Polk County Court House and the Polk County Library along with other county services. Mena is a gateway to some of the most visited tourist attractions in Arkansas. Polk County is home to three school districts as well as the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain, which includes the Ouachita Center, which is perfect for hosting conferences and parties. Mena School District, Cossatot River School District, and Ouachita River School district offer a wide range of educational choices for local families. Two of the districts constructed brand new high school buildings in the last few years as well as the addition of a performing arts center at Mena High School.

The City of Mena has a diverse collection of parks available for its residents and visitors. Aubrey D. Tapley Park & Sports Complex features baseball, softball, and soccer fields and is utilized by many visiting teams as well as local clubs. The 10 acre Janssen Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to a log cabin built in 1851, two spring fed ponds, a gazebo, pavilion, and playground. McMillan Park is the site of the city pool as well as tennis courts, skate park, baseball diamond, a pavilion and playground. Further south in Polk County, you will find the City of Hatfield where a recent grant enabled them to install a basketball court, handicapped accessible picnic tables, and seven outdoor exercise stations. The park also has a completely renovated playground area, a walking trail, and a newly received grant is in place to build a restroom facility. The towns of Cove and Vandervoort have their own community parks with features such as basketball courts, covered pavilions, and playgrounds. Hatfield is also home to Camp Pioneer. This camp was first used by the Boy Scouts in 1916 and remains in use today. Its beautiful setting at the confluence of the Mountain Fork River and Two Mile Creek welcomes hundreds of scouts every summer. Today, Caddo Area Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Camp Pioneer is the most utilized Boy Scout camp in Arkansas.
