Christmas events a huge success The city of Mena was turned into a magical place Saturday night as crowds lined the streets to wait for the annual Christmas Parade of Lights.

The parade was a project of the Mena/Polk County Chamber of Commerce and the local businesses that participated outdid themselves with holiday splendor in the theme of “Favorite Movies of Christmas.”

Commission hears update on evaluation The Mena Water Commission heard an update on the ongoing evaluation of the city’s water and sewer lines.

The city maintains approximately 350,000 feet of sewer lines and smoke testing has now been performed on 290,000 feet. Some main line leaks have been discovered as well as a number of leaks on private property. Each leak discovered has been GPS mapped and crews have placed orange dots to flag the area.

A 60-day flow study has been completed and another 60-day flow study has been started.

The results of these two studies will compare the different basins within the city.

The weather has slowed the evaluation down because the ground has been so saturated with rain the smoke will not rise from the leaking pipes. Other problems faced have been beavers and finding the exact location of manholes.

The next stage of the evaluation is televising of lines. The second flow study will be completed by January and hopefully the evaluation report will be completed to present to the Water Commission and the Mena City Council

by February.

The end of the festival boasted a tremendous fireworks display that was followed with the official lighting of Janssen Park.

Benefit planned for Moffat A benefit dinner is planned for Aaron Moffat of Mena on Tues., Dec. 11 from 4-7 p.m. at the Branding Iron Restaurant, located at 623 Sherwood Ave. in Mena.

Moffat was diagnosed at birth with Cystic Fibrosis, an inherited disorder without a cure. It causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs, but lung failure is the major cause of death for people with the disorder.

Moffat is in need of a double lung transplant and the cost of medical care not covered by health insurance is becoming overwhelming.

If you cannot attend the benefit but would like to help, donations may be mailed to Aaron Moffat, 1009 Sherwood Ave., Mena, AR 71953. Moffat has said that any funds he receives but is unable to use will be given to another patient with Cystic Fibrosis.

We would especially like to thank Keith Hastey for his quiet professionalism, attention to detail and genuine caring which far exceeded our expectations and helped to make Wallace’s final days ones that were peaceful and worry free.

We would also like to say thank you to the Southwestern EMS for their quick response Wednesday morning and for their tender compassion when Wallace had passed.

To Brother Tim Harper and our church family from Faith Baptist Church, thank you so much for the love & support you’ve showed our family during this time of loss.

Mena Schools receives Outstanding Educational Performance Award The University of Arkansas Office for Education Policy has recognized Mena Middle School as a school where students demonstrated high growth on the ACT Aspire.

The OEP creates Outstanding Educational Performance Awards in an annual report. This year schools with high student growth are being recognized. The OEP feels the best indication of the positive impact that a school has on students is growth.

OEP released its Middle School Level Report today/(Wednesday) and Mena Middle School

has been recognized for High Overall Growth: Middle Level for the Southwest Region and High Math Growth: Middle Level for the Southwest Region.

OEP provides information for the school’s website and a personalized paper award will be sent to the district.

Awards are based on the 2018 content growth score calculated by the Arkansas Department of Education in a comparison of how much improvement was shown by students in comparison to last year’s expectations.

Deadline approaching for Veterans’ Angel Tree The Mena Elks Lodge is hosting a Veterans’ Angel Tree this holiday season.

Gifts bought for the angels will go to local veterans in nursing homes and assisted living programs.

Anyone wishing to adopt an angel may pick one up at the Elks Lodge, located at 124 Elks Drive in

December 2, 2018 Traffic stop on Highway 71 South in Cove led to a Citation for Possession of a Schedule VI Controlled Substance being issued to Kaylee K. Earls, 19, of Fort Smith. Additional information has been provided to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for further consideration.

Traffic stop on Highway 71 North near Acorn led to the arrest of Lorne D. Edwards, 47, of Mena, on Charges of DWI 2nd and Careless Driving.

Traffic stop on Highway 71 South near Potter led to the arrest of Zachary W. Jones, 33, of Live Oak, FL, on a Charge of DWI. Arrested by an officer with the Arkansas Game & Fish was Brian W. Peters, 46, of Mena, on a Warrant for Harassment.

Polk County Detention Center Jail Population: 20 Incarcerated Inmates, with 2 Inmates currently on the Waiting List for a State Facility.

Mena Police Department Report November 25, 2018 Employees at a local fast food restaurant reported that a customer had become verbally abusive and was making threats before leaving the business. Case pending location and interview of suspect.

November 26, 2018 Report was made of an uniden-

tified man taking items from a local retail store without paying for them.

Case is pending review of surveillance tapes and location and interview of suspect.

Donnie Dollarhyde, 45, of Mena was arrested on several outstanding warrants for failure to appear and failure to pay.

A Mena man reported that unauthorized debits had been made to his bank account. Case pending.

Kimberly Morriss, 35, of Smithville, OK was arrested on an outstanding felony warrant.

Trinna E. Myers, 38, of Mena was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Polk County.

November 27, 2018 A local woman reported that her daughter’s medication was missing. Case is pending further investigation.

Kaylie Marie Stroud, 22, of Mena was charged with failure to vacate.

Amy Harrison, 29, of Mena was arrested on two outstanding warrants for failure to pay fines and court costs from the Mena Police Department.

November 28, 2018 A local man reported that he has a missing firearm. Case is pending location and interview of suspect.

Michael Lynn Lance, 55, of Mena was charged with driving on a suspended driver’s license, having no liability insurance, and having no vehicle tags. He was also served

an outstanding warrant from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Tori Veal, 25, of Mena turned herself in to authorities on an outstanding warrant for failure to pay fines and court costs.

November 29, 2018 A Mena man reported that he is habitually being harassed by a neighbor. No charges have been filed at this time.

Clay Breeden, 39, of Mena was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, fleeing, obstructing governmental operations, having no liability insurance, two counts of possession of methamphetamine or cocaine, possession of schedule VI controlled substance, running a stop sign, possession of schedule I or II controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, and resisting arrest. The arrest followed a traffic stop.

November 30, 2018 A local man reported he is being harassed by an acquaintance.

No charges have been filed at this time.

A local woman reported that someone has charged several items to her account. Case is pending further information.

December 1, 2018 Roger Burton, 29, of Mena was arrested and charged with violation of a no contact order.

Thompson named semi-finalist in National Merit Scholarship Program Mena High School Senior Christopher Thompson has been named a semi-finalist in the 64th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Thompson is one of approximately 16,000 semifinalist across the nation that are competing for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million.

The scholarship program is very rigorous and applicants must undergo many steps and excel in multiple areas to be considered for the scholarship

program.

The initial screening for participants was their score on the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The scores of the nationwide pool of semifinalists, represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors that took the test.

Reflections From Faith and History Remembering Pearl Harbor-By Jeff Olson Year after year, many of us probably remember dates from America's history which are very significant, some of which have altered the course of history. One such date I include in this column every year. On December 7, 1941 the Japanese empire launched a surprise and unprovoked attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor and the Army Air Corps Base at Hickam Field, Hawaii. The attack commenced at about 7:50 am and by morning's end there were approximately

2,400 people dead and 1,300 wounded, with 19 ships and more than 300 airplanes destroyed or damaged. These losses were devastating, dealing a huge blow to America's Pacific fleet and air power.

Fortunately, our aircraft carriers were not at Pearl Harbor. They would sail to fight another day. That day and many more would indeed come, including Lt. Col. James Doolittle leading the bombing raid on Tokyo the following April and then in June when the American aircraft carriers

The attack on Pearl Harbor unified America as she had rarely (if ever) been, before or since. World War II was the most costly war in history; in lives, destruction, and far-reaching consequences. America's "Greatest Generation" fought World War II on the combat front and home front, and it took commitment and sacrifice on both to achieve victory - a victory which is one reason I have the freedom to write this and you to read it on this day. However, the war was not won by America alone. It also took strong and decisive leadership and resolve by other nations, especially Great Britain which had been in the war for several years prior to America's entrance and for a while stood alone against the Nazis war machine. As Winston Churchill stated during some of Great Britain's darkest hours: “You ask what is our aim? I can answer in one word: Victory. Victory at all costs. Victory in spite of all terror. Victory however long and hard the road may be.

For without victory there is no survival."

Weekly Publication ations, but we must be great enough to make our own commitments and sacrifices needed on all fronts to preserve a free America; a nation which needs to return to our Christian roots and heritage and rediscover a unity based on those principles of truth and freedom which we still have in common. Remembering such events as Pearl Harbor and 911 is always important because it serves as a reminder of the cost of our freedom and how fragile and vulnerable to extinction it is in the absence of vigilance from each generation, including ours!

I would like to close with a brief excerpt from President Franklin Roosevelt's address to Congress in the House Chamber on December 8, 1941. "No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.... There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger. With confidence in our armed forces - with the unbounding determination of our people we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God."

Weekly Publication BRUCE HENRY DALE Bruce Henry Dale , 83, of Oden, Arkansas passed away Tuesday. November 20, 2018 at Rich Mountain Nursing Home in Mena, Arkansas. He was born on August 1, 1935 in Jackson, Kentucky to the late Isaac Dale and the late Laura Spencer Dale. He spent most of his life living in Michigan and Arkansas. Mr. Dale retired from Precision Auto in Pontiac, Michigan.

He always worked hard and had a good work ethic and was a great family man.

He is survived by his sister Dora Jane Whelpley of Goodrich, Michigan. Daughters Vicki Gadd and husband David of Ola, Arkansas; Sandy Renshaw and husband Fred of Waterford, Michigan; Shiela Ehrsam and husband Ed of Fruitland Park, Florida; Connie Goss and husband Spencer of Kalvera, Michigan. Sons John Dale and Abigail Clemons of Oden, Arkansas; Bruce Dale , Jr. and Doreena Joseph of Grayling , Michigan.

Host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

CATHEY E. BURGER Cathey E. Burger, age 57, of Mena passed away Friday, November 30, 2018 in Mena, Arkansas.

Cathey was born December 21, 1960 in Hereford, Texas to James Roy Mott and Rachel Morgan Mott. She was happily married to Howard Burger for 41 years. She was the Principal’s Secretary at Mena High School. Cathey was an avid Razorback fan and she enjoyed camping and gardening. She truly loved family gatherings and her dog Zoey but most of all she treasured her grandbabies. She was a loving and thoughtful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and will be greatly missed by all.

She is survived by her husband Howard Burger of Mena, Arkansas. Son Chris Burger of Mena, Arkansas. Daughter Jennifer Rowland and husband Rodney of Mena, Arkansas. Grandchildren Lily Rowland, Luke Rowland, Jarrett Burger, Paisley Burger and Jentry Burger. Brothers Larry Mott and Rueben Mott. Sisters Ramona Nichols and Rebecca Cady. Nephews Harry Little, John Little. Niece Michelle Hofauer She was preceded in death by her parents James Roy and Rachel Mott and her sister Carolyn Little.

DOW COOPER ANDERSON JR. Dow Cooper Anderson Jr., age 67, of Mena, Arkansas, passed away, Saturday, December 1, 2018 surrounded by family and loved ones.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at Board Camp Baptist Church located at 107 Polk Road 63, Mena, Arkansas 71953. Pastor Brett Lee and Ron Tilley will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Board Camp Baptist Church Building Fund. Dow was born November 14, 1951, in Port Arthur, Texas to Dow Cooper Sr. and Audrey May Anderson. He entered military service with the U.S. Army in April 1972 where he served with distinction in the 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam Conflict before returning to civilian life. Dow spent the next 22 years of his professional career in Industrial Construction, where he was able to leave his mark on manufacturing projects that span from coast to coast. He had a sincere passion for travel that could only be surpassed by his love for family gatherings and spending time with his 27 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Dow is survived by his wife, Debra Ann Anderson of Mena, AR; his siblings, Donna Tyndall of Woodville, TX, William Anderson and his wife, Deanna of Bismark, AR and Onna Tucker of Mena, AR; his children, Jamie Anderson and his wife, Tina of Mena, AR, David Anderson and his wife, Summar of Hatfield, AR, Amy Campbell of Berryville, AR, Chris Anderson and his wife, Jessica of Bentonville, AR, Josh Anderson and his wife, Jessica of Mena, AR, Lt Col Tom Hayes and his wife, Chelsea of Buckeye, AZ, and Courtney Yawn and her husband, Boogie of Dayton, TX; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. JOHNNY N. HARMS Johnny N. Harms, age 91, of Ink, Arkansas, died Saturday, December 1, 2018 at the Mena Manor Skilled Nursing and Rehab. He was born on Monday, October 24, 1927 to Isaac and Emma Kathrine Neufield in Ulysses, Kansas.

Johnny lived his life serving the Lord, his family and others. He was an active member of the Cherry Hill Methodist Church. Johnny served his country for 26 years in the United States Army and the United States Air Force. He began his career at the end of World War II; then served during the Korean Conflict and into the Vietnam Era and retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant. During this time for 17 years, he taught survival combat to all air crew members which he truly loved. After serving he returned home to raise his family and be a father to them. He loved his family greatly. Johnny in his spare

time enjoyed woodworking, tanning hides and lapidary. Johnny was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and a great friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorraine Harms; three brothers, David Harms, Isaac Harms Jr., and Alvin Harms and four sisters, Edna Kliwer, Louella Schultz, Ruby Schmidt and Anna Mae Gertzen.

MARTHA FERN DAVIS Martha Fern Davis, age 80, of Mena, Arkansas, died, Saturday, December 1, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Monday, April 11, 1938 to Fred and Rushe Miner Anthony in Boles, Arkansas.

Martha loved her family and spending time with them. She enjoyed riding horses, working in her flower gardens and playing Bluegrass Music with her guitar. Martha worked as a beautician for over 40 years and owned and operated Marty’s Guys and Dolls Hair Salon. Martha was of the Pentecostal faith. Martha was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend and will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Billy Davis; her son, Robert Davis and several brothers and sisters.

Lamar served his country in the National Guard from 1969 to 1974 and then soon started a 34 year career working for Weyerhaeuser in Wickes. He was a great provider for his family and loved them dearly. Lamar loved to go deer hunting and was president of the Slate Creek Hunting Club. He and his wife, Linda attended Zafra Church of Christ. Lamar was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Rex Martin and Roy Martin and one granddaughter, Madison Martin.

Howard lived his life serving the Lord, his family and his country. He attended the Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Mena. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era. After leaving the military, Howard re-entered civilian life and took jobs in Indiana, Texas and Arkansas to provide for his family. All those who knew Howard, know that providing for his family was his greatest calling, and played a large part in guiding his life. Howard was fascinated with genealogy and especially enjoyed researching the Ross family history. He also loved gardening and grew some of the most amazing vegetables which he gladly shared with others. Howard was a loving husband, a dedicated father, grandfather and brother. Over the years many people have had the privilege of calling him friend and to those who truly knew him, he will be missed.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Charles, Wilburn and Clifton and grandson Kyle Titsworth.

CRSD Christmas Concerts

The Cossatot River High School Music Department will be presenting their Christmas concert Monday, December 10 in the Holbert Auditorium in Wickes under the direction of Shelby Breedlove.

The band concert will begin at 6 p.m. featuring the seventh and eighth grade beginning band followed by the senior high band.

The choir concert will follow the band concert at 7, under the direction of Susan Brewer. The seventh grade TrebleMakers choir will begin

the concert, followed by the seventh and eighth grade AccaFellas choir and then the eighth grade TrebleTones choir will perform.

The senior high all girls choir, Cantabile will begin the second half of the concert with the senior high mixed choir, Noteworthy finishing off the evening Everyone is invited to come and enjoy a night of festive holiday music performed by many talented Cossatot River High School musicians.

Local Choirs to perform at State Capitol School choirs from across Arkansas add Christmas spirit to the beautifully decorated State Capitol every year during the holiday season and this year the Acorn Elementary Choir and the Mena High School Spotlight Singers will be a part of the festivities.

The Acorn Elementary Choir will be performing at noon on Tues., Dec. 11 and on Wed., Dec. 12 the Mena High School Spotlight Singers will

perform at 12:40 p.m. during the 2018 Sounds of the Season School Choir State Capitol Performance.

BEARCATS KNOCK OFF HOST TEAM IN FIRST ROUND ACTION

By Easton Leonard Last week, the Mena Bearcat (3-3) senior high basketball team competed in the Citizen’s Bank & Trust Tournament at Van Buren High School.

In the first round of the tournament, the Bearcats matched up against the hosting Van Buren Pointers. In a very low scoring first quarter, Mena edged the Pointer 9-8. However, Van Buren outscored the Bearcats 24-9 in the second quarter, to take a fourteen-point, 32-18, lead into halftime.

Mena held the Pointers to just 9 points in the third quarter, while scoring 12 of their own, to cut Van Buren’s lead down to eleven, 41-30, going into the final quarter of play.

In an eventful fourth quarter, Connor Harvey himself outscored the Pointers with 17 points of his on to their 11. The Bearcats as a team put up 26 points and scored the last 14 points

of the game, in the fourth, to take the lead and eventually defeat the 7A Van Buren Pointers by a score of 56-52.

Connor Harvey led the Mena Bearcats with 33 points on the night, including 8 triples, as Zeb Wilson scored 9 points of his own, Brock Strother 8 points, Daniel Davis 3 points, Nick Myers 2 points, and Zane Stephens 1 point.

Moving on in the tournament, the Bearcats took on Fort Smith Southside, another 7A team, in the semi-finals. Mena fell short in a much closer game than the score shows, by thirteen, 67-54. And in their final game of the tournament, the Bearcats faced Subiaco Academy and lost another close game, by three, 67-64.

Also last week, the Mena Ladycat

(2-3) senior high basketball team competed in the Airedale Classic at Alma High School. The Ladycats were defeated by Alma (47-43), and by Shiloh Christian (44-38).

This week, both the Bearcats and Ladycats traveled to Hot Springs Lakeside and Tuesday, and will travel to Paris on Friday, December 7th.

MENA JR. LADYCATS TROUNCE MALVERN ON HARDCOURT

By Easton Leonard Last Thursday, November 29th, the Mena Jr. Basketball hosted the Malvern Jr. Leopards at Jim Rackley Gymnasium on the campus of Mena Middle School. Prior to the varsity action, the Malvern Jr. JV Leopards defeated Mena 35-33, then the Mena Jr. JV Ladycats defeated Malvern

33-4.

The Jr. Ladycats opened up the varsity game with 18 points in the first quarter against Malvern, as the Jr. Lady Leopards were held to only 2 points by the Mena defense. However, both Mena and Malvern were held scoreless in the second quarter, to give the Ladycats a sixteen point, 18-

At the half, Grayson Fairless led the Ladycats with 8 points, as Moore led Malvern with 2 points.

HSO RECEIVES DONATION FROM RACHAEL RAY FOUNDATION

The Rachael Ray Foundation,™ which is funded by a portion of proceeds from each sale of Rachael’s pet food, Nutrish®, has made a donation of $50,000.00 to assist with Humane Society of the Ouachitas’s (HSO) ongoing work to help save abandoned animals in Polk County. Grayson Fairless led the Mena Jr. Ladycats with 15 points, while Emmi Hines added on 6 points of her own, Brooklyn Pennington and Vivi Denton both added on 4 points a piece, Kiera Hall scored 3 points, and Madi Lyle, Libby Sharp, Bethany Godwin, MacKenzie Vincent, and Carleigh Smart all scored 2 points each.

For the finale of the night, the Jr. Bearcats took on the Malvern Jr. Leopards. Malvern started off hot, outscoring the Jr. Bearcats by eleven, 17-6, in the opening quarter of play.

Mena then went on to edge the Jr. Leopards 12-10 in the second quarter, to trail by nine at halftime, 27-18.

Caleb Peters led Mena at halftime with 8 points, while DJ Culp led the Jr. Leopards with 8 points.

Malvern really pulled away from

the Jr. Bearcats in the third quarter, as Mena was held to only four points while the Jr. Leopards scored nineteen points of their own, to extend their lead to twenty-four, 46-22, going into the fourth. However, the Jr. Bearcats offense still wasn’t able to get going, as Mena scored just five points, while Malvern scored thirteen, to make the eventual final score 59-27, a thirty-two points win for the Jr. Leopards.

Powell led the Mena Jr. Bearcats with 9 points in the game, as Caleb Peters scored 8 points, Brown 4 points, Wallis 3 points, S. McEntire 2 points, and W. McEntire 1 point.

Brown led the Malvern Jr. Leopards with 10 points on the night, as Artis and Culp both scored 8 points, Johnson 7 points, Mitchell and Lock 6 points, Martin 4 points, and Luton, Barnes, Jones, McAlister, and Traylor all scored 2 points each.

This week, the Mena Jr. Bearcats and Jr. Ladycats will compete in the Jr. Union Bank Tournament on the campus of Mena High School.

The Basscats competed in the STATE AYFF TOURNAMENT ON LAKE DARDANELLE! Brynten Rose & Cody Beck took 1st in the Jr division. Austin Johnston and Cason Cannon took 1sr place in the senior division. By winning 1st place in the senior division, Austin and Cason have qualified to fish in three BFL qualifier tournaments this spring with all tournament fees paid. The Mena Basscats next tournament will be February 23rd on Lake Greeson.

CRAIG ELECTED TO NEW HAMPSHIRE STATE REP. Kevin Craig, a graduate of Hatfield High School, Class of 1981, is to be sworn in as a New Hampshire State Representative on Wednesday, December 5.

Ribbon Cutting Held At Santa’ s Outback Barn The Mena/Polk County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony last Friday to welcome Santa to the community.

Santa’s Outback Barn is located at the Historic KCS Depot and in lieu of a housewarming gift he asks that you bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to Toys for Tots.

The Outback Barn will be accepting gifts on Sat., Dec. 8; Sat., Dec. 15; and Sat., Dec. 22 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Santa’s Outback Barn is a project of the Mena/Polk County Chamber of Commerce, and is dedicated to Polk County Extension Agent Carla Vaught for her many years of service to the community.
