Over eleven inches of rain last week and strong winds associated with thunderstorms Saturday caused damage to county roads and several buildings. Polk County Ju dge Brandon Ellison told K EN A and The Pulse that damage to county roads was widespread but not catastrophic. Excessive Rainfall, Thunderstorms Cause Damage in Polk County BY CHRIS DANIEL

here are approximately thirteen hundred miles of county roads and about a thousand miles of those are gravel. Ellison said that it would take a few weeks to get all the repairs made and that the impassable areas would be open early in the week. Storms Saturday had high winds and caused damage to several structures. The roof of a barn on County R oad 29 3 , just west of the Polk County Fairgrounds, was completely blown off, and a building at R ichie’s Discount Auto Glass on Hwy 7 1 South in Mena was also damaged. The N ational Weather Service in Little R ock issued a Tornado Warning Saturday after radar indicated rotation in the northwest corner of Polk County. Sirens were not activated in Mena since the rotation was not close to Mena and was not traveling toward Mena, according to olk ounty ﬁce o ergency Management Director Tommy Stueart. In addition to the Tornado Warning, there was a Tornado Watch, Flood Watch, Areal Flood Watch, and two Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued for Polk County on Saturday. Tornado sirens locally are tested at noon each Wednesday unless there is severe weather or the potential for severe weather in the area. N OAA Weather R adios are also tested on Wednesdays in Arkansas unless there is severe weather in the state or the potential for severe weather, in which case they are tested on the next good weather day. R uby J ewel York age 9 2 of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma passed away Saturday, February 1 7 ,

20 1 8 in Oklahoma. R uby J ewel York was born March 3 1 , 1 9 25 , in Mena, Arkansas, to the late Ode C. and Della Long Milham. She married Vernon R ay York in 1 9 5 3 and they enjoyed a life together in Oklahoma City and Mustang, OK until his death in 1 9 8 4 . R uby’s role in life was wife and Mother but she was also a skilled seamstress and enjoyed making clothes for her family and friends. Later in life she enjoyed making doll clothes for antique dolls. Faith played a prominent role in R uby’s life. R uby was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mena, AR and former member of the Chisolm Heights Baptist Church in Mustang, OK and K entucky Avenue Baptist Church of OK C, OK . She loved teaching Sunday school and playing hymns on the piano. R uby lived a long healthy life – and until a fall in 20 1 7 , she enjoyed 9 2 years of living in-

Acorn Students Amazed by Chocolate

corn second grade students loaded a Little R ock Tours charter bus on a rainy February 21 and traveled to Bentonville to learn about Chocolate at the Scott Family Amazeum Museum. Prior to the trip, the students read the book Who Was Milton Hershey? They created timelines related to the study of how chocolate has been used in the past. Once considered a “food for the gods,” chocolate is now affordable for everyone. Milton Hershey is credited for this after he began using milk in his chocolate. is ﬁrst ershey kiss was produced in 1 9 0 7 . Today Americans consume an average of 1 2 pounds of chocolate per person in a year. In the Hershey Lab students saw a wall mural illustrating the history of chocolate and a map indicating where cocoa trees are grown to produce cocoa to make chocolate. Students examined actual cocoa pods with “beans” inside and were amazed of their size. In the same manner as Milton ershey they e peri ented with di erent a ors that can be added to chocolate and produced their own candy. Writing poems and stories, taste tests, creating posters, using technology, and reading other books about Hershey and the history of chocolate were paramount for this project. The Amazed project was funded by a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council. Mena McDonald’s also supported the project and supplied breakfast on the charter bus for the students and their teachers.

An elderly husband and wife noticed that they were beginning to forget many little things around the house. They were afraid that this could be dangerous, as one of them may accidentally forget to turn off the stove and thus cause a fire. So, they decided to go see their doctor to get some help. Their physician told them that many people their age find it useful to write themselves little notes as reminders. The elderly couple thought this sounded wonderful, and left the doctor’s office very pleased with the advice. When they got home, the wife said, “Honey, will you please go to the kitchen and get me a dish of ice cream? And why don’t you write that down so you won’t forget?” “Nonsense,” said the husband, “I can remember a dish of ice cream!” “Well,” said the wife, “I’d also like some strawberries on it. You better write that down, because I know you’ll forget.” “Don’t be silly,” replied the husband. “A dish of ice cream and some strawberries. I can remember that!” “OK, dear, but I’d like you to put some whipped cream on top. Now you’d really better write it down now. You’ll forget,” said the wife. “Come now, my memory’s not all that bad,” said the husband. “No problem, a dish of ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream.” With that, the husband shut the kitchen door behind him. The wife could hear him getting out pots and pans, and making some noise inconsistent with his preparing a dish of ice cream, strawberries, and whipped cream. He emerged from the kitchen about 15 minutes later. Walking over to his wife, he presented her with a plate of bacon and eggs. The wife took one look at the plate, glanced up at her husband and said, “Hey, where’s the toast?”
