UARM Foundation Hosts Scholarship Reception I

n February 27 th, the U A Rich Mountain Foundation hosted a scholarship reception to recognize and celebrate the fall 2017 and spring 2018 scholarship recipients and donors. The program included a welcome by U A Rich Mountain Foundation Chair, Jo hn Vacca, keynote speech by U A Rich Mountain Academic All-Star, Danni Smyth, an overview of the current Foundation scholarship funds w/acknowledgement of donor and recipient by Director of Development and Community Relations, Tammy Young and closing remarks by Phillip Wilson. For the fall and spring semesters, over 120 scholarships were awarded to U A Rich Mountain students. During this time, I also joined the Mena Fire Department where I am currently an active firefighter. U pon satisfying my military obligation, I studied criminal justice at the U niversity of Arkansas Fort Smith where I was fortunate to be awarded an academic internship with the U nited States Marshals Service. It was while I was in college, a position with the Polk ounty heriff s ffice was offered to me I knew it was time to serve my hometown in a bigger capacity. It was very rewarding to work for the citize ns of Polk County. My time there was invaluable in teaching me decision making skills, intricacies of county government, ethical responsibility and maintaining fairness in

all situations. In early 2017 , my wife and I started a family and I was presented an opportunity to own and operate my own business. This opportunity has allowed me more time to focus on my family. I am grateful for this chance to spend time at home, but my true passion will always be public service. If I am elected for this position I promise to work hard to serve the people of Mena. My priorities in office will be efficient management of all city programs and departments, fiscal transparency, and mindful economic growth. Mena is my hometown, I feel it is the best possible place to raise my family and hope that we can work hard to move forward together.

On Saturday, March 31, from 10 AM – 2 PM, there will be some family activities geared toward the youngsters. The Easter Rabbit will be in downtown Mena in the lobby of the G eorge Davis State Farm B uilding. Please go by and let your little ones visit with him. There will be no professional photographer. Parents are invited to take photographs. Some of the Ouachita Little Theatre members will be having story time at the theatre throughout the same time period ( 10am – 2pm) . G o by and listen to these talented people as they tell delightful Easter and related stories. In the springtime, small cuddly animals come to mind. There will be some little farm animals set up in the grassy lot between Sears and Lipstick & Curls. Also, in that area of downtown, temporary Easter tattoos will be put on at a sidewalk table near Coast to Coast and Stewman’s Flowers. The Downtown Partners have been working with the elementary schools’ arts teacher, Pat Self, and MDP businesses will have some of that effort on display March 30 and . tudents from kindergarten to the fifth grade were given sheets with an egg outline. Their assignment was to color or decorate the egg and submit it for judging. Out of the appro imate , five will be selected from each class as semi finalists. These drawings will be on display in business windows downtown. TOMMY GALE ASHLEY

Tommy G ale Ashley, age 7 2, of Mena, passed away Monday, March 19 , 2018 at the Mena Regional H ealth System. H e was born on Sunday, November 18, 19 45 to Modean Titsworth Ashley and H enry Ashley in Mena, Arkansas. Tommy was a member of the Dallas Avenue B aptist Church. H e was a hard worker and for anyone that knew him seen that he always lived life to the fullest. Tommy served in the U nited States Army during the Vietnam Era. H e and his wife Paula owned Polk County Meat Processing for 15 years while he worked for Del Mesa Farms in G lenwood and retired from there. Tommy loved fishing, hunting, golfing, gardening and being outdoors and was a member of the Elks Lodge and Six Mile H unting Club. H is wife and family were very important to him and he loved having all the family together for cookouts. Tommy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and a great friend who will be missed by all who knew him. H e is preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers in law, B ill Walston and Danny Walston. Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Paula Ashley of Mena, his son and daughter in law, B rad and Mandy Ashley of

Irvalene lara arrison age , formerly of Mena, left this world for her H eavenly H ome on March 21, 2018. She is survived by her husband of 5 7 years, Sebarn H arrison Jr ., sister Wanda Dickson, son G ary H arrison, daughter Elaine Showl, 3 grandchildren-H aley Marie H arrison, Clarissa e hae estphal and husband evin, and Daniel B ryan G essling, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. MMS Sixth Grade Choir to Perform Schoolhouse Rock Musical SUBMITTED

he Mena Middle School Sixt h G rade Choir will present Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr . on Tuesday, April 3, at 7 :00 PM in the high school Performing Arts Center. Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr . is based on the Emmy Award-winning 19 7 0' s educational cartoon series. Each song in the musical teaches a lesson through words and melody. Some of the music featured in the musical actually has roots in Polk County. According to The Encyclopedia of Arkansas H istory and Culture, B ob Dorough, music director of the television series, Schoolhouse Rock! , was born in Cherry H ill and attended part of his elementary school years in Mena. Dorough wrote twenty-two songs for the series including " Three Is A Magic Number." H e served as music director for Schoolhouse Rock! from 19 7 3 to 19 85 . The Sixt h G rade Choir has worked in collaboration with high school theater students and drama department students to produce the junior version of the highly acclaimed B roadway play. The performance will take place Tuesday, April 3, at 7 :00 p.m. Admission is $ 2.00 for adults and $ 1.00 for students.

American Made Wins Nashville Tournament

his past weekend, a few local softball athletes from Polk County, competed with the 10U American Made softball team, which consists of ten players from all across the great state of Arkansas. Prior to this weekends tournament in Nashville, American Made went undefeated and won first place in a B entonville Tournament. This weekend, the young team did the same ( went undefeated and won first place) in a tournament in Nashville, Arkansas. American Made players from Polk County include Lilly Rowland, Taylor Watts, and K aitLynn Ledbetter. Congratulations to the American Made softball team on two great tournament performances in the month of March.

his past week, over spring break, the Mena B earcats baseball team traveled to Magnolia to compete in the Magnolia Spring B reak Tournament. In their first round matchup, on Thursday, against Marion, the B earcats fell to the Patriots 10-0, after allowing eight early runs in the first two innings combined. Moving onto Friday, the B earcats played the Lumberjacks of Warren, and were defeated by six , 12-6 . And on Saturday, Mena took on the Parkers Chapel Trojans in their final game of the tournament. The Bearcats allowed four runs in the first three innings, while scoring only one of their own, but tied the ballgame up in the fifth with three runs. In the following inning, the six th, Mena allowed two runs to the Trojans and scored one run of their own. Trailing by one, the B earcats scored a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game up, and sending the game to ex tra innings. In the top of the eighth, Mena was held scoreless, but the Trojans walked it off in the bottom of the innings, to win by one, 7 -6 . This week, on Monday, the B earcats traveled to Ashdown, and will travel to Nashville on Friday, March 30th.

Mena Police Department March 18, 2018 A local man reported that his pickup had been damaged and someone had stolen an air compressor from the vehicle. Case is pending location and interview of suspect. Report was made of someone harassing a local woman. Case is pending. March 19, 2018

David Cross, 44, of Lexington, Oklahoma was arrested on a warrant from Oklahoma. Employees at a local business reported that someone had broken a window on a building on their property. Case is pending review of surveillance tapes. Aaron Marcus Shores, 27, of Mena was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine or cocaine, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, and fleeing. Report was made of someone taking out a credit card in a local man’s name. Case is pending further investigation. March 20, 2018

Report was made of someone stealing a vehicle from the parking lot of a local tire dealer. Case is pending. A local woman reported that her son had become angry and cursed her, and grabbed her wrists. No arrests have been made at this time. March 21, 2018 Carolyn Burrell, 33, of Cove turned herself in to authorities on outstanding warrants. A 16-year-old Mena youth was taken into custody and charged with assault on a family member and criminal mischief after a call to a local residence. Case was referred to juvenile authorities. Zachary A. Lunsford, 30, of Mena was arrested on a warrant from the parole/probation department. Report was made of an altercation between a local woman and her estranged husband. No charges have been filed. March 22, 2018

A local woman reported that someone was harassing her and had vandalized her vehicle. Case is pending location of suspect. A 17-year-old Mena youth was arrested for probation violation and turned over to juvenile authorities. Larry Wood, 55, of Mena was charged with DWI and careless driving after officers responded to an accident in Mena. March 23, 2018 No reports on file. March 24, 2018 Report was made of an altercation between a local woman and her estranged husband. No charges have been filed. Case was referred to the prosecuting attorney for possible warrants. Michael Krulcik, 23, of Mena was charged with driving on a suspended driver’s license and having no insurance on his vehicle.
