BY EASTON LEONARD

eastonsports@yahoo.com

ast Friday night, March 2nd, the Mena Bearcats baseball team hosted the Bauxite Miners for their home and season opener at Union Bank Field. Kyndon Schuller started the night on the mound for the Bearcats. The first pitch of the season for Mena was a ball outside to the Miners. The first batter for Bauxite went on to walk on five pitches. After two steals and another walk, the Miners had runners on the corners with three hole hitter at the plate. Schuller recorded his first out, on a groundout to third base, giving up one run. The next batter for the Miners flied out to right fielder Brycen Aynes, but batted in another run on a tag up. The fifth and final batter for Bauxite in the first inning grounded out to second base, as Schuller escaped the inning giving up only two runs. After a strikeout to lead off the bottom of the first by Schuller, Brown singled on a liner to right center, giving the Bearcats their first base runner of the season. After a fly out to right field, and a check swing strikeout, Mena was able to score no runs, leaving the score at 2-0 after one complete inning. Three batters into the top of the second, Schuller gave up a single and two walks, to load the bases with no outs. Schuller then struck out the fourth batter of the inning on three batters. The next batter, number twenty, flew out to left center field, scoring another run on a tag up. Schuller then walked the next batter, to again load the bases, but was able to get out of the jam, thanks to a slick catch by second baseman Colton Sawyer. Two pitches into the bottom of the second inning, Colton Sawyer hit a line drive single into right field. Blake Castor was then called out on strikes, after seeing five pitches. With one out and a runner on third, Brycen Aynes was hit by a pitch, to put runners at the corners. One pitch later, Aynes was thrown out trying to steal second base. With two outs, TJ Kizer walked, but the Bearcats threat to score was ended on a strikeout by Chandler Fretz. Making the score 3-0 after two full innings. Ian Martin stepped on the mound for Mena to start the third inning. After a seven pitch single and a hit by pitch, a mishandled bouncer to third baseman Mason Broth-

erton, scored a run for the Miners, and put a runner at first and second with no outs. Following a pop out to first base, the Bearcats were able to get another out after a Miner tried to steal home on a passed ball. After a walk and another mishandled grounder at third, Mena was able to get out of the inning on a fly out to right field, allowing only two runs, to make the score 5-0 Bauxite. To lead off the bottom of the third, pitcher Ian Martin singled on a line drive right up the middle of the field. ONLY IN AMERICA

The 10 Lost Tribes

By Harry Golden Isaiah, the prophet, wrote that the remnant of Yawheh’s people would be found in the “isles of the sea.” Isn’t it reasonable this remnant may be the people of the British Isles? Grant me the possibility and I shall proceed to unravel the great archaeological riddle of the ages: what happened to the ten lost tribes? The men of Dan escaped slaughter when Shalmanaser subjugated the ten tribes. As they made their way across Europe, they left indelible evidence of their journey. They called the places they stopped after the name of their tribe: thus Danube, Dnieper, Denmark, etc., all of which lay along their route of march. The men of Dan eventually settled in Ireland and were known as Tuatha de Daanana None of this is imaginary research. One has only to dip into the work of the eminent Rabbi S. Raisin to see how well documented and probable this hypothesis is. Along with the Danites, the other coastal tribes, the Asher, Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, escaped Shalmanaser’s fury. Obviously, the Simeonites became the Simoni (or Cimerii) of Wales. The Danites called thier new home arzaret, which means “another Land of Israel” and gradually they also came to call themselves Gauls which is a metamorphosis of the word “Golim” meaning exiles. Some of them called themselves Saccae which derives from

Succotites and means “dwellers in booths.” These were the fellows who emigrated to the next island and came to call themselves Scotsmen for all “Scotch” means, as any student of AngloSaxon know, is “Irisher.” Others from Ireland emigrated to Wales and the folk ethos remained strongest here. David remained their favorite name and became their patron saint, although they forgot their Hebrew for as Isaiah said. “For with stammering lips and with a strange tongue shall it be spoken to the people.” Returning once again to the Old Testament for more verification, we see that when Zedekiah, the last ruler of Judea was carried off into captivity by Nebuchadnessar, his daughter, Tea Tophi found refuge under the guardianship of Jeremiah. Jeremiah also saved her royal escutcheon, the harp, and the Wonderful Stone, the fountain stone of the temple of Mount Zion. When Tea Tophi married Heremon, the ruler of the Danites, the Lion of Judah was united with the Unicorn of Joseph a characteristic of all English heraldry. Last but not least, consider that the word “Britain” may well be a corruption of the Hebrew “Brith-am” meaning the “people of the Covenant.” What do I mean by all this? Simple. The Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians, and the Irish Catholics are really my cousins - all right, so it’s a few times removed. All of us knew it all along. Family-Friendly Ideas for Getting Out and About This Spring STATEPOINT

S

pring is the best time of year to get outdoors and spend some quality time with the family. Here are three ideas to shake off winter’s cabin fever and the most of the season. Take a Hike: Visit a state or national park and hit the hiking trails. Most parks have a variety of trails of varying difficulty and length. From Glacier National Park in the west to Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area in the east, check out options that offer nature and wildlife areas, hiking trails, parks and family fun. If hiking, do your research and select a route that’s right for your group, pack some snacks and sandwiches before hitting the trail. Just be sure to stay hydrated, wear good footwear, and apply sunscreen and bug spray. As the weather warms, you’ll want to take these important precautions. To reward your efforts, plan a fun ice cream excursion for the way home. Community Events: Whether you stay local or travel afar, many local communities offer music, food and fun-filled spring events and outdoor festivals. How about an epic road trip to Brookhaven, GA? The city hosts their annual Brookhaven Cherry Blossom Festival each spring attracting over 15,000 people from across the country. The festival makes for a great girlfriends’ getaway, guys’ trip or family adventure. And, pets are welcome too! “This music and art extravaganza is our marquee event of the year, and we hope to kick off the Atlanta-area festival season in style,” says Brookhaven Mayor, John Ernst. The totally free event takes place at Blackburn Park on March 24-25 and features something for all age groups, including great food, an arts and crafts festival, a classic car show, a 5k road race, a dog show, a Kidz Zone, and big-name musical acts, like country music stars Craig Morgan and Keith Anderson, as well the LA-based indie rock band, Transviolet, and the rock act, Hannah Wicklund & The Steppin Stones. For more information about the 2018 Brookhaven Cherry Blossom Festival, visit brookcherryfest.org, Enjoy Your Own Backyard: Kick off the backyard season by firing up the grill and playing lawn games, like horseshoes, croquet, and bean bag toss. Create a warm-weather playlist to set the party mood and ask friends and neighbors over and turn it into a potluck. After a long winter, welcome spring with fun outdoor activities at home and out in the community that the whole family can enjoy.

Meet the Artist: Judith Cantrell

BY BARBARA M. TOBIAS

J

udith Cantrell is one of the rising stars in our local art world. She is a soft-spoken, gentle, and very talented lady who creates exquisite drawings in several media. Her work has won some awards at Mena Art Gallery over the past few years. Her latest is a beautiful pastel drawing of a hawk. Judith started making art ten or eleven years ago after having done nothing in that field since high school. But in 2002, she had a vision where she saw some beautiful paintings and knew that she was someday to create those. Judith says she is basically self-taught by trying different things and pursuing those which worked for her. She started with pencil drawings, moved to working with pen and ink, and tried watercolor. Four or five years ago, she worked some with acrylics. But when she discovered pastel pencils, she felt she had found her medium. She likes the fine detail she can get with these better than the chalk used by many pastel artists. At the November 2017 Ouachita Arts Celebration, Tommy Young (our local wildlife rehabber) brought some of his birds of prey. Judith managed to get a photograph from which she did the hawk portrait that was included in the recent Mena Art Gallery “Portrait of Arkansas” exhibit. Judith has found that, for her, the best way to learn is to try whatever looks interesting, keep working on the things that succeed for her and reject the things that do not. Judith says, “If you just try to please other people, you lose the joy of creation.” She is still pursuing the goal she saw in that vision so many years ago. “I haven’t seen them hanging on my wall yet, but I know I can get there.”

f you don’t instantly recognize this movie title, chances are you are not well acquainted with The Beatles. If that’s the case, you owe it to yourself to come to the FREE showing of the Beatles’ first movie release on March 14 and see what all the fuss was (and still is) about. This original classic was described by well-known critic Roger Ebert as “Smart, irreverent and electrifying.” It still holds up today largely due to the humorous charm of the Fab Four themselves. But it is also worth seeing the world-famous soundtrack of hit songs performed on film, as well as for the historical nature of the production. Filmed and released in 1964 at the height of Beatlemania, the story is based loosely on a “day in the life” of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. There is a somewhat silly sub-plot revolving around Paul’s mischief-making grandfather, but the film shines most brightly with performances of great musical hits like “All My Loving,” “She Loves You,” “Can’t Buy Me Love” and many more. Even in the 1960’s, critics were kind to this film giving credit to the Beatles for their genuine acting skills and to British director, Richard Lester for his ability to capture the humor and adventure surrounding the world’s most famous ground-breaking band. “A Hard Day’s Night” will begin at 6:30 PM and has a G rating suitable for all audiences. As this film feature is rarely seen on TV, it is a great time to introduce young music fans to early rock history. And some of the older fans will most certainly enjoy fond memories of their favorite music as well. Before the movie begins, come see the Lyric Players perform a reader’s theatre production with a similar theme to our movie selection at 6:00 PM. They will do a fifteen-minute entertaining scene with minimal props and costuming that OLT audiences are sure to enjoy. This is a great avenue for some of our local actors to showcase their talents, and OLT encourages your attendance for this portion of the evening’s entertainment. It will end in plenty of time for you to visit the concession stand for hot popcorn, soft drinks and candy selections before the movie begins promptly at 6:30 PM.
