Tax Increase to Fund Construction of New $10.9 Million County Jail Rejected by Voters

“The May 12, 2015 Special Election for a new County Jail is now history. 1999 voters participated out of approximately 11,000 registered voters in the county. (A disappointingly low turnout of 18%).

Both tax measures on the ballot were voted against by approximately 60% to 40%. However, this letter is not about the outcome, but the process. On behalf of my fellow County Election Commissioners, David Ray and Bernie Mize, I thank the poll workers who diligently worked the Early Vote at the Office Complex in Mena and the Special Election Day Vote at 15 polling places around Polk County. These folks, no matter what political affiliation or beliefs, came together as teams to facilitate our constitutional rights to vote. Volunteers all, they are true patriots and deserve our gratitude.

Thanks to Terri Harrison and her staff who worked tirelessly at the Courthouse Election Day and Election Night to troubleshoot occasional problems and manage the data and equipment while voting was ongoing and the subsequent closing of those polls and data as they flowed back to the Courthouse. It was a very long day which started at 7 AM and didn’t end for many until after 9 PM. We also appreciate those who delivered and returned the voting machines.

BY LEANN DILECK & MELANIE BUCK After months of public debate, town hall meetings, and newspaper articles, voters had the opportunity to let their voices be heard regarding a proposed tax increase to fund a $10.9 million jail facility during a Special Election Tuesday, May 12. Voter turn out was considered to be light for such a Special Election with 553 voting during early election and a remaining 1,446 casting their ballots on Tuesday.

Results show that Polk County voters spoke decisively on this issue with 1,187 voters (60%) voting to reject the first measure for a permanent ¼ cent Sales and Use Tax for the purpose of an additional source of revenue to be used to acquire, construct, improve, expand, equip, furnish, operate and maintain new or existing jail and law enforcement facilities, including any necessary land acquisition and utility, road and parking improvements related thereto or in support thereof and to pay and secure the repayment of bonds approved by the voters and issued by the County from time to time to finance jail and law enforcement facilities and facilities related thereto or in support thereof (“Jail and Law Enforcement Bonds”).

On the second measure, 1,194 voters (60%) voted to reject a new ¾ cent Sales and Use Tax for the purpose of retiring bonds used to construct the new jail. The ¾ cent tax would be used for “a new jail, sheriff’s office, arraignment room, 911 dispatch center, and administrative offices related to law enforcement and any necessary land acquisition and utility, road and parking improvements related thereto and in support thereof.”

Polk County Sheriif Mike Godfrey had this to say following the release of the election results, “Of course I’m disappointed… I know what the future holds. I know it is only a matter of time before the state shuts us down.” Godfrey explained another inspection is coming up in September or October. “The last thing we want is to be shut down. It will cost the county in transport fees and have deputies off the street.”

Godfrey assured residents that this will not affect how he or his staff do their job. “Our focus is to protect and serve.

McMillan City Pool to Open Memorial Day Weekend

BY MELANIE BUCK The Mena City Pool is set to open this Saturday from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m., and on Sunday and Monday from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. The pool will officially open full time the following Saturday, May 30, and be open seven days a week to the general public from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Mondays thru Saturdays and on Sundays from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Starting June 1, the pool will be open from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Monday-Friday, for adult/ lap swimming. No kids will be allowed during that time frame unless they are swimming laps. This time is set aside for those that wish to use the pool just for exercise.

Brochures will be available for swimming lessons after opening day and you can begin booking your pool parties now by calling 394-8312.

Preparations have begun for this year’s annual Ouachita Quilt Show. Part of those preparations include the chance for you to win a beautiful quilt of your own while helping Polk County single parents get the education they need to create better lives for themselves and their children. The heirloom-quality quilt will be given away on Saturday, June 7 at the Show. According to the Fatal Crash Summary Report filed by ASP Trooper Christopher Garner, the accident occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m.

Seals was eastbound on Hwy. 88 in a 2012 Chevrolet Truck when Candy May, age 52, of Hot Springs, crossed the centerline in a 2005 Ford Thunderbird striking the truck head-on. The accident occurred approximately one mile east of the old Ink Snack Bar. Seals was pronounced deceased at Mena Regional Health System and arrangements are pending with Beasley Wood Funeral Home of Mena.

Road conditions were dry and the weather was clear, however, as of press time, there were no other details available including the conditions of other passengers involved.

He added that one of their top priorities must be on keeping the existing jail open for as long as possible and one of the first ways to do that and avoid lawsuits is staying within their certified capacity of 25. “We’ve been averaging 39,” Godfrey explained, “That essentially means there will be more criminals on the streets.”

There is no “Plan B” Godfrey explained. “We can put a band-aid on the jail to keep it open as long as we can by doing some small things but they won’t fix the bigger problem.”

Due to extremely high waters and continued rainfall, the 26th annual TriLakes Big Bass Festival set for Saturday has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 27. The event is held at DeQueen Lake, Gillham Lake, and Dierks Lake and is hosted yearly by the DeQueen/Sevier County Chamber of Commerce.

DeQueen and Gillham Lakes, campgrounds, and boat ramps are currently closed.

In hosting the tournament, the fishermen’s safety is most important and tournament officials hope that by June 27th, water will be at a safe level. This is only the second time in the 26 years of the tournament that it has had to be rescheduled.

You can fish at the lake of your choice and five places will be awarded each hour on each lake. First place in Big Bass wins $1500. Boat check begins at 5 a.m.

26th Annual Tri-Lakes Big Bass Festival Rescheduled

University of Arkansas and his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Arkansas for Medical Science.

He completed his General Surgery Residency at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

Dr. Burton is a board certified general surgeon who was a senior partner with Fayetteville Surgical Associates for 20 years. He was on active staff at Washington Regional Medical Center where he served as the Chief of Surgery and Director of the Wound Care Center. Before joining Fayetteville Surgical Associates in 1991, he gained extensive experience in trauma and critical care at Level I and Level II trauma centers in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.

His years as a surgeon have provided him with a wide-range of extensive experience. With the completion of more than 100 hours of continuing medical education annually, his strong commitment to the latest technology and state-of-the-art medical procedures is real and demonstrable.

A special interest in caring for patients who need improvement of circulation to the body and its extremities and diabetic wound care have allowed Dr. Burton to develop an expertise in the care of patients with peripheral vascular disease and limb threatening infections.

Dr. Burton, who will be a full time surgeon for MRHS, will be joining Dr. Thomas Sullivan, MRHS General Surgeon, who will continue to work a two week monthly rotation. Dr. Burton is married to Phyllis Miller, a former journalist who earned her Ph.D. in institutional public relations from Texas A&M. The couple has four adult children. “Being a surgeon is my calling and my passion,” Dr. Burton said. “Nothing brings me more pleasure than working with patients to make the best decisions for their health care. I am looking forward to caring for those in this community that I learned to love as a child, a community that I already consider home.”

BY MELANIE BUCK This Memorial Day weekend, the Celebration Singers, originally formed in 1973, will have thirty members and five of their leaders reunite at the First Baptist Church in Mena.

The group gained their name after a musical was produced about the life of Christ called “Celebrate Life.” The group was formed with several Christian youth from various denominations in the area and was sponsored by First Baptist Church and several businesses in Mena. The Celebration Singers were directed by Valda Sherrer and they performed musicals, taught Bible school, and led worship in several states including Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Arkansas over a period of four years.

Battle of the Bulge

and now spend their days traveling together. As Memorial Day approaches, the world would do good to remember, and be thankful, that such men not only existed, but fought for our freedom long before most of us were born.

Such is the case with Larkin Dilbeck (LEFT) and Harold Bradley (RIGHT). Larkin is a graduate of Hatfield, Arkansas, and still has family here, and Harold was from Texas.

The two met in 1943 before going overseas to fight one of the biggest and most well known battles in history – The Battle of the Bulge, the largest and bloodiest battle of WWII. Their story begins when they met in Arizona, at Camp Bouse, a top-secret post that was used from 1942 – 1944 for the development and testing of a device called “Gizmo.” The tanks had modified turrets that carried a 13-million candlepower searchlights that passed through a narrow slot, blinding the enemy. Both men talked about how top secret the project was, but that it was never used in war.

From there, the two traveled to Belgium where fate kept them alive when their tank battalions were under heavy enemy fire many, many times. They have stories of near hits and misses, of facing the dreaded “tiger tanks” that the German’s used, and stories of how they both became recipients of the Purple Heart. But, above all, they have a story of camaraderie, determination, and friendship.

The two men didn’t see each other for decades until 2013, in an airport in Dallas. Both men were taking a journey back, a journey back to the place where nightmares were made of, back to the place where their victory was won, back to Belgium and the Battle of the Bulge.

Each year, reunions are held in Belgium and the Netherlands for these fine examples of men and the others they fought alongside, the 740th Tank Battalion, Company C. Harold occupied the 3rd Platoon and Larkin was in the 2nd Platoon. Although their numbers are dwindling, those left, make the trek overseas and are welcomed there almost more than they are on home soil.

The men explained that over there, the people were thankful for the Americans who put a stop to the devastating war, thankful for the men and women who gave their lives for those they didn’t even know. Those same people are still thankful and turn out by the hundreds at the Battalion’s reunions every year. Hundreds of people pay tribute at the American soldier’s graves who are forever interred on foreign soil. They honor men like Larkin and Harold by holding festivals in their honor and they know each soldier by sight.

Here in America, they’re a little more hard-pressed to find such thanksgiving. But neither man complains, they did what they needed to do to make it home to their families.

Although they have since been decorated with Purple Hearts and Silver Stars, they are both humble and ready to share their stories so that others can learn from them. When asked what they would want people to take from their stories, Larkin said, “I would like to see more people interested in World War II and I would like to see more veteran’s tell their stories.”

Mena Lion’s Club BBQ Cook Off This event will run Saturday, June 6 of the festival. The cook off will be pulled pork sandwiches. Beginning at 11 a.m. the Lion’s Club will begin selling meals to the public.

5K Walk/Run - This year’s 5K walk/run will both start and end at Janssen Park. The event will kick off at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 6. Registrations will be accepted until 7:30 am on race day. Registration forms are available on line at www.VisitMena.com and click on the Lum & Abner link. Entry fee is just $20 and includes a Lum & Abner t-shirt. First, Second and Third place winners in each division will be awarded medals.

3 on 3 Basketball - Always a popular event of Lum & Abner is the 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament held on Sherwood Street. Event t-shirts will be included with the registration fee. The winning teams with receive medals. Registrations will be honored until 9 am, June 6 and are available on line at www.VisitMena.com just click on the Lum & Abner Featured Event link. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 6.

Fishing Derbies - Once again being organized by the local B.P.O.E. (Elks) with assistance by the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission, the derbies will offer 3 different categories: Seniors (55+), physically challenged and children ages 5-12. See schedule for exact times for each division. The derbies will be held at the ponds in Janssen Park. There is no need to pre-register and no cost to participate. Bring your own tackle and bait.

Union Bank Firefighter’s Challenge The local hometown bank, the Union Bank of Mena, is once again the corporate sponsorship of this very popular event. The event will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6 in Janssen Park and includes fun events such as Bucket Brigade, SCBA Donning, Firefighter Relay, Wild Line Recovery, a Waterball Fight and some new games. Both local and out of town fire departments compete. Prize money and trophies are awarded.

Outhouse Races - The outhouse races will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 5 on 9th Street. This is a very unique and fun event to compete in and watch! Don’t have your own Outhouse? We have several to choose from, so just gather your team and come have some fun! There is no cost to compete.

The festival “office” will be in the cabin. Souvenir t-shirts will be on sale and maps and brochures on the area will be available. Other Mena and Lum & Abner souvenirs will also be available. william dale stricklin

William Dale Stricklin, previously of Hatfield, Ark., and New York City, passed away on April 25 at his home in Eureka Springs, Ark. He was 48.

He had recently returned to Arkansas from New York City, where he had lived for the past 23 years, working as a campaign manager for a number of notable local politicians and as a union organizer. He was a fourtime president of New York’s esteemed Village Independent Democrats, founded by Eleanor Roosevelt, one of the city’s oldest and most influential political clubs.

Additionally, he was an organizer for the

Service Employees International Union (SEIU), one of the largest unions representing healthcare and property services workers as well as local and state government employees.

He grew up in Hatfield, where he was a 1984 graduate of Hatfield High School.

Prior to moving to New York, he studied sociology and history at the University of Arkansas.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Hampton of Fort Smith, AR, and sister, Jane Miner and husband Steve Miner of Hatfield AR. He was preceded in death by his father, William Howard Stricklin.

A memorial service will be held at Hatfield Town Hall, 115 Town Hall St. Hatfield, AR, on Saturday, June 27. A time will be posted at a later date.

Cotton Ashley Cotton Ashley, age 55, of Mena, Arkansas passed away Sunday, May 10, 2015 in Ever-

burg, Texas to John Franklin Ashley and Peggy Williams Ashley. He was married to Lynn Wood Ashley and worked in the Construction business as a Superintendent for many years. Cotton loved to hunt and fish and spend time with family and friends.

He was an amazing craftsman, who could build or fix almost anything someone wanted or needed. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend to all who knew him. He will be dearly missed.

DEXTER RAYMOND KREINER Dexter Raymond Kreiner, age 60, of Hatfield passed away Monday, May 11, 2015 in Mena, Arkansas.

He was born January 20, 1955 in Lincoln, Nebraska to the late Raymond Kreiner and Clara Ella Farnham Kreiner. He was happily married to Sharon Busby Kreiner and was an oil field worker by profession.

Dexter was the head usher at the Hatfield Free Will Baptist Church. He has lived in Hatfield since 2009. Dexter loved his family, church family and friends very much. He also enjoyed fishing, building birdhouses, woodwork, and camping. Dexter enjoyed singing in the choir at church and fellowship with his church family. He was a loving husband, adopted son and friend to all who knew him. He will be dearly missed by all.

He is survived by wife, Sharon Kreiner of Hatfield, Arkansas; Adopted Mom and Dad, Tex and Eula Busby; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, godchildren, and friends.

He served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army and was a farmer by profession. Also, a longtime member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church and was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council 7258. He was a loving and kind husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to all.

He will be dearly missed by all.

Brandi Benner - A Talented Lover of Faith, Family, and Song

BY JACLYN ROSE Born and raised in Mena, Brandi Benner found her love for music at a young age. “My dad really encouraged me to be in the school band and that opened the door for me musically and taught me to love music,” explained Benner.

After graduating from Mena High School in 1996, Benner completed a year of college at Rich Mountain Community College before transferring to the College of the Ozarks, near Branson, Missouri. There she completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Church Music. She then began working on her Master’s Degree in Arizona but decided to take a year off in 2001. During this time, Benner and her mother, Norma Baker, opened The Friendship House in Mena.

In 2002, Benner started back with her Master’s Program and transferred to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas and obtained her degree in Vocal Performance. While working on her Master’s, Benner met her husband, Chris Benner, and after being friends for a year, they began dating in 2003 and were married in 2005. “For Chris and I, communication and honesty are very important parts of our marriage. First and foremost, we both follow the Lord and put our faith and trust in God. Whatever decision or issue we face, we pray about it first and we try very much to teach our daughter that same lifestyle,” explained Benner.

After competing their degrees the Benners worked in Texas for several years, Chris in camp ministry and Brandi as worship leader in a church. They recently completed Charlie Brown with the Ouachita Little Theater with Brandi playing Lucy, Chris playing Charlie, and Bailey playing Woodstock. “I feel like I come alive on stage, and it is obvious that we are influencing Bailey and allowing her to develop her own passion for theater. One of the cooler things I’ve done was The Promise in 2014. The Promise is the story of Christ, birth through resurrection and Bailey and I both traveled to Glen Rose, Texas every weekend for three months to perform. I was the Harlot and Bailey was a shepherd and townsperson and was the understudy for the dead girl. She is a natural on stage,” Benner said.

“I love Mena and I love knowing people and have people know me. I’d rather know everyone than know no one. I love the climate, the four seasons, the mountains, the trees, it just speaks to me and I want to be in a place where I’m inspired,” Benner said.

His father has owned a successful window cleaning business in Huitt’s hometown of Springfield, Missouri for the past 15 years. “I started helping my dad at his window cleaning company when I was 15 years old. In 2012, Huitt met his wife, Gabriela through mutual friends. OPINION

What Do You Want In Life?

by michael reisig How about I start this column with a simple question: “What do you want most in life?”

If you don’t know what you want in life, you’re going to have a really tough time finding it. It’s the equivalent of an Easter egg hunt with no Easter eggs.

Some of the answers to the above question lies attached to what you think you deserve. (I’m not talking about an inner-city intellect here where you think you deserve everything). I’m speaking of the faith and the confidence that abides within you, and the willingness to achieve. If you take these elements and combine them with sensible goals, this will put you headed in the right direction on The Yellow Brick Road of life.

Most importantly you have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone – you’re not a tree – you can’t grow standing still. Free yourself and become a hawk.

One of the things everyone wants is a lover or a friend. If you’re really lucky you get both in one package – someone to tell your story to at the end of the day, and someone to drink the other half of the bottle of wine – so you don’t. But don’t ever forget that a relationship is a work in progress. It requires constant mutual attention.

And we need to remember there’s a price that comes with everything that we want. Generally, the value of what you want is commensurate with the work it takes to get it – unless you win the lottery. And it’s okay to play the lottery – but it’s not okay to expect to win.

The way I figure it, only about 20 percent of the people in America actually know what they want. The rest are drifting, clutching at the flotsam and jetsam around them in the river of life. It’s a rare achievement to actually be certain of your direction, but it’s not impossible. The nice thing about life is that it’s full of opportunities and surprises. Who knows – you might just reach out and catch the right piece of flotsam.

What I’m saying here is: Don’t expect a miracle – but don’t give up on the idea.

In the end, you’ve only got three choices in life: Give up, give in, or give it all you’ve got. Everything in your life at this moment is a reflection of what you have wanted, and how much effort you have exerted to achieve it. Look in the mirror of life and ask yourself: Am I a happy hawk, or am I just a tree?

Mena Ladycats Headed to 4A State Championship

BY NORM BETZ The Mena Ladycats are headed back to the 4A State Championship looking to end this season with one more victory. The Ladycats have met two-thirds of their season goals and are looking to finish off the last one this Friday, May 22nd, when they will battle the Lady Miners of Bauxite in the 4A State Championship game, to be played on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Bogle Park. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.

The Ladycats met their first goal of capturing the 4A-7 District Title when they defeated Bauxite, 2-1, at the district tournament held at Waldron, Arkansas. Mena went on to grab their second goal of the season, when they traveled four hours to Dumas, Arkansas, where they destroyed Bauxite 13-0, to win the 4A South Regional Tournament. Their third goal awaits them on this Friday, as they will fittingly, play Bauxite for the 4A State Title.

The 26-3 Ladycats have cruised through the 4A Classification to this point in the season. The Ladycats’ three losses came in the River City Rumble Tournament in Van Buren, Arkansas, and all three were to opponents above the 4A Classification. The losses were all by the score of 1-0, to 7A Rogers, to 6A Greenwood, and to 5A Vilonia. Other than that, Mena has had little trouble with 4A opponents with the exception of the District Championship, when the Ladycats defeated Bauxite, 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh inning, on a throwing error.

The Ladycats have outscored their 4A counterparts this postseason by a margin of 63 runs. The Ladycats have outscored their 4A-7 District opponents 13-1, in two games, their 4A South Regional opponents 35-2 in three games, and their 4A State opponents 18-0, in two games.

There’s just one more game for the Ladycats and that is the 4A State Championship vs Bauxite, to be played this Friday, May 22 at 3:00 p.m. at Bogle Park at the University of Arkansas.

Jewel Takes First at Meet of Champions

BY MELANIE BUCK Mena High School Junior Zach Jewell took a first place finish in the 2015 Meet of Champions on Saturday in Russellville. Zach won the long jump with a jump of 22 feet and 4 inches.

Zach has been a standout athlete in track competition this year. He has won first place in almost every event he entered for the entire season, breaking records along the way.

Two Polk County Soccer Teams Play at State Tourney

BY NORM BETZ The Mena Ladycats and the Cossatot River Eagles soccer teams both advanced to the 4A State Playoffs. The Ladycats entered as the No. 4 seed out of the 4A-2 Region, while the Eagles entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed from the same region.

Due to the limited number of schools that have soccer as a school sport, there are different classifications playing in the same classification. The 4A-2 Girls Conference is made up of: 2A Gurdon High School, 3A Cossatot River High School, 3A Harmony Grove - Haskell, 4A Mena High School, 4A Arkadelphia High School, 4A Arkansas Baptist High School, 4A Malvern High School, 4A Central Arkansas Christian, and 4A Pulaski Robinson High School. The 4A-2 Boys Conference is made up of all the schools listed above, plus 2A Academic Plus Charter School and 3A Centerpoint High School.

There are nine teams in the girls conference and 11 teams in the boys conference. The top four teams from each conference advance to the 4A State Playoffs.

The No. 4 seed Mena Ladycats were matched up with Shiloh Christian High School, the No. 1 seed from the 4A-1 Region. Unfortunately for the Ladycats, their quest for a State Championship ended in the first-round, with a 6-0 loss to the Lady Saints. Shiloh Christian advanced past Conway Christian 6-0, but eventually lost in the semifinals to Central Arkansas Christian, 1-0.

The No. 2 seed Cossatot River Eagles also saw their bid for a State Championship fade in the first-round. The Eagles lost to Decatur High School, the No. 3 seed from the 4A-1 Region, 2-1. Decatur lost their next game to Warren 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

Both Central Arkansas Christian’s boys and girls will be playing in the 4A State Championship. The girls will play Gentry High School, while the boys will play 3A Danville High School.

Kenzie Daniels - An Author in Training Kenzie Daniels, a third grade student from Acorn Elementary School, submitted her story, “The Adventure of Rosie Raindrop,” to the PBS Kids Writers Contest in April after encouragement from her Grandmother, Cheryl Boyd.

Kenzie’s creative writing was inspired from information she learned about the water cycle in her third grade science class. She developed her story by adding a character and illustrations to the scientific information. She then submitted her story with the help of her parents, Jon and Lisa Daniels. Kenzie was awarded Third Place in the writing contest for Third Graders in Arkansas.

by kim hughes, extension office agent, fcs Many canners are passed down or bought at estate sales or yard sales. The only way to know if the canner is working properly is to have it tested to ensure the safety of the food being processed.

If your canner isn’t working properly the foods in the jar can be under-processed and can increase the chance that botulism spores may still be present in the jars.

Pressure canning is the only recommended method for canning meat, poultry, seafood, and low acid vegetables.

Pressure canners destroy the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum, which can be found in low-acid foods when they are processed at the correct time and pressure in pressure canners. A canner operated at a gauge pressure of 10.5 pounds of pressure provides an internal temperature of 240°F. If Clostridium Botulinum bacteria survive and grow inside a sealed jar of food, they can produce a poisonous toxin. Even a taste of food containing this toxin can be fatal.

Pressure canners for use in the home have been extensively redesigned in recent years. Models made before the 1970’s were heavy-walled kettles with clamp-on or turn-on lids. The older models are still safe, as long as the dial is accurate; they are just heavier.

Newer models will have a jar rack, gasket, dial or weighted gauge, an automatic vent/cover lock, a vent port (steam vent) to be closed with a counterweight or weighted gauge, and a safety fuse.

Green beans and tomatoes are among the most popular vegetables for home canning. Because of their low acidity, vegetables such as green beans must be processed in a pressure canner.

On vacation, a man and his wife check into a hotel. The husband wants to have a snack at the restaurant, but his wife is extremely tired so she decides to go on up to their room to rest.

She lies down on the bed... just then, a train passes by very close to the window and shakes the room so hard she’s thrown out of the bed.

Thinking this must be a freak occurrence, she lies down once more. But just a few minutes later a train again shakes the room so violently, she’s pitched to the floor.

Exasperated, she calls the front desk and asks for the manager who says he’ll be right up.

The manager is skeptical but the wife insists the story is true.

“Look... lie here on the bed -- you’ll be thrown right to the floor!” So he lies down next to the wife.

Moments From American History The Navajo Code Talkers

BY JEFF OLSON Two weeks ago, America observed the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, commemorating the end of World War II in Europe. After Adolph Hitler committed suicide in April 1945, Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz briefly succeeded him as Germany’s leader. Doenitz arranged for Germany’s surrender, and on May 7th chief of staff of the German armed forces Colonel General Alfred Jodl signed a statement of unconditional surrender at General Dwight Eisenhower’s headquarters in Reims, France. America celebrated exuberantly, however the war in the southwest Pacific continued and the path to victory there was still uncertain.

Early on in the war, the U.S. military faced a critical communications problem in the Pacific. The Japanese were succeeding in intercepting and deciphering Allied messages almost as fast as new ones could be invented, resulting in the anticipation of U.S. attacks and at a large loss of American lives. It was such a problem that one war analyst commented, “Military communications were made available to the enemy like sand sifting through a sieve.” What was the solution? A code the enemy couldn’t crack.

Philip Johnston, a World War I veteran and a civil engineer for the city of Los Angeles, grew up the son of Protestant missionaries serving on a Navajo reservation where he learned to speak their native tongue. Having recently read a newspaper story about an armored division in Louisiana that was attempting to come up with a way to code military communications using Native American personnel, Johnston was soon struck with the idea of using the Navajo’s language as a basis for such a code. He thought that the complexity of Navajo linguistics would make it an ideal choice to be used in code due to the lack of documentation made available for learning to speak the language and ability for the same words to mean multiple things based on sound. He subsequently approached the military in February 1942 and the theory was tested with four Navajos. Convinced of the potential for developing a secure code, in May the Marines initially recruited 29 Navajos who would officially be designated the 382nd Platoon, U.S. Marine Corps, at basic training. Afterward, they were transferred to Camp Pendleton at Oceanside, CA. Three more Navajos were subsequently added, and the 32 of them were tasked with devising a new Marine Corps military code which, when transmitted in their own language, could completely confuse their Japanese enemies. The Navajo code would prove to be the most foolproof in the history of warfare, and the only spoken military code never to have been deciphered.

Through this code, more than 400 Navajo code talkers over the next 3 years communicated thousands of encrypted radio messages between command posts and front lines. They served with all six Marine divisions in the Pacific and with Marine Raider Battalions and parachute units as well. They participated in major Marine campaigns on the Solomons, the Marianas, Peleliu, and Iwo Jima. It is certain that these dependable, dedicated and courageous Navajo Americans saved countless lives during the war and helped bring it to a more expedient and victorious end for the Allies. Major Howard Conner, 5th Marine Division signal officer, later stated “....Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima.”

On June 4, 2014 Chester Nez, the last surviving member of the initial 29 original code talkers recruited, died at his home in Albuquerque, NM at the age of 93. The U.S. Marines Corps released this statement: “We mourn his passing but honor and celebrate the indomitable spirit and dedication of those Marines who became known as the Navajo code talkers.”
