Mena Middle School EAST students celebrate veterans The Polk County Veterans’ Celebration was held on Wednesday, November 7 at the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain. Middle School EAST Students began preparing for this in August when they had a meeting with the Veterans. They advertised via radio and TV Public Service Announcements through UARM, also in print by creating Posters and Invitations, which they posted around Polk County. They attended several Veteran Meetings, giving personal invitations and photographing Veterans. The celebration was conducted by the students. They recognized Veterans who provided their information and gave a presentation of the photos they had taken. Speakers included Dr. Thrailkill with UARM, Mr. Coogan with MMS, and Mr. Bob Young Vietnam Veteran. Representatives from Senator Cotton, Senator Boozman, and Congressman Westerman also attended. Refreshments provided by the UARM Foundation, Walmart, and High School Independent Living Class. Thank you to our community partners: University of Arkansas Rich Mountain and UARM Foundation. Reflections From Faith and History Do You Have a Home Church? By Jeff Olson
Not long after Denise and I moved to Mena many years ago, we visited several churches in the community. While we were both Christians, neither one of us had been a part of a church for some time but it so happened that the minister who we chose to officiate our wedding ceremony agreed to do so on one condition. After counseling with us, a young couple who he had never met before, he said he would marry us if we promised to join and become active in a Bible-believing church soon after we were married. We promised him that we would, and we did though it was about fif-

teen months into our marriage. Following our church visits in Mena, we soon received a home visit from two elderly ladies from one of them on an early October morning. After introducing themselves, my wife invited them in. I happened to be home that day due to an illness so I spoke to them and promptly returned to the bedroom. After most of an hour, the ladies left and Denise informed me that one of them was the pastor’s mother. Denise commented how kind and concerned the ladies were, and how much they hoped we would return to their church. Among the questions those ladies posed to us included: “Do you go to

church anywhere, or do you have a home church or a church home?” Of course the answer for us to any of these was no, but these were important questions, the meaning and depth of which were more encompassing and consequential than we realized then. Denise and I both were members of a church at that time, but those commitments had disappeared many years previous, so we were in store for quite a journey, what would become a lifelong journey. After additional visits from others of this church, including the pastor and music minister, we eventually joined Dallas Avenue Baptist Church. From this time forward, a home church came to have real meaning: a rededication to Christ and a deeper relationship with Him, a classroom of learning God’s word through preaching, teaching and lifestyles, a close kinship to those of His Body, a family away from family (ours lived many miles away), and a source of support and friendships. When our children came along, some in our home church became their surrogate grandparents with the love and wisdom that a -See young family needs. In these, and in so many

Thanks once again,
other ways, we were blessed beyond anticipated and unknown expectations. Over the years, our blessings and even our heartaches have served to grow us in our spiritual journey through our home church, but in one way perhaps more than any other and this may have been the most consequential of all. From the pastors and Sunday School teachers of our church home, we learned much of what it means to live the Christian life well beyond the four walls of the church building. Included in this and perhaps the most important part was the truth that church begins in the home. In fact, home is the first church for a child and it should continue to be a vital part of the church as a whole for the entire family unit. Family prayer, Bible reading and devotionals, and time together around the dinner table all should be standard fare, but equally important (and perhaps more so) is how well the walk compares with the talk that we as parents demonstrate to our children. We have all probably heard, “Val-

-History, from pg. 5 ues are caught more than taught.” This phrase cuts to the chase in how very important this is. Children don’t’ expect Mom and Dad to be perfect, but they have a right to expect humility and honesty, especially when we have messed up or even totally blown it. I have felt compelled, or led, to apologize on more than one occasion for mishandling a situation or issue involving one or more of our family. Home church should be a place of loving authority, unconditional love, unhindered communication, uncompromising truth, and an environment where religion is not worn on the sleeve but where the Christian faith is woven into the
very fabric of our being, our identity, our relationships, and our influence. In this way, our home church can fulfill the important role it has within our church home. To expect the church to replace the home, or vice versa, is both unscriptural and undoable. This is why God created the family and the church, two separate but intricately intertwined institutions. It is, however, the family which God created first and from this we can be sure that strong Christ-centered families are necessary for strong Christ-centered churches. Neglect of church at home will therefore have strong implications for your home church, the Body of Christ. May we all remember this.

James,
ORSD implements AMI Heather Grabin News Director The Ouachita River School District has mailed a letter explaining Alternative Methods Instruction (AMI) and students from both the Acorn and Oden campuses will be bringing an AMI packet home with them today. According to District Superintendent Jerrall Strasner the new AMI policy implemented by the district will allow students to complete their school work during inclement weather days instead of adding days to the school year. Strasner explained that state law
requires students to attend 178days of school a year. The district has 5 make-up days set in the 2018-19 school year per state mandates, but schools have been giving the option to develop a policy that will help keep them from making up even more days. Strasner said AMI allows the district to have a “plan in place” and help keep the district’s school year ending by Memorial Day weekend in May. According to Strasner, the district

November declared National Hospice Month -Bearcats, from pg. 15 Hospice care provides a system that allows patients and their families the education and support needed during the final stages of life. Hospice tries to provide the public with advances in pain control and care options required as well as being a network of social, emotional and spiritual support for patients and caregivers. Ouachita Regional Hospice in Mena has joined the Hospice Association of American and other hospice providers in declaring November 2018 as National Hospice Month. Mena Mayor George McKee was joined by Tom Patterson, Executive Director of Ouachita Regional Hospice and Jessica Woodall, Account Executive of Ouachita Regional Hospice last week as he signed a proclamation declaring the month of November as National Hospice month in the city of Mena. The proclamation encourages the community to support and participate in learning more about the hospice concept of care for the elderly, disabled and infirm.
