Welcome to Issue 11 of The Fly. I'm finally in a position to extend the distribution of the Fly in Banchory. This volume boasts 32 pages over the Spring issue’s 24 as, thankfully, more existing and new businesses have something to say, and the magazine has had to expand to accommodate them all! So, the Autumn issue of The Fly will see a trial run of 5,000 copies, plus new door-to-door deliveries. See centre pages for details. In this issue, you can read about the vibrantly creative Violin Trail to be found around the town this summer, the Banchory Singers' virtual concert success and other events opening up across the area as restrictions lift – let's hope they stay there! There's a woolly tale on p17... An inspiring new book has been written in our midst that delves deeply into the ups and downs of life with a chronic mental illness. Not always an easy read, I would recommend Tara and Cameron Leipers’ book to anyone living or working with schizophrenia, featured on p14. Remember that community information is FREE to include in these pages, so if you have any news for the Summer edition, tell me about it by August 1st if you can.

Visit Banchory and chances are you will encounter one of the 12 artists' fiddles on display around the town. The vibrant new Banchory Violin Trail is located in various host locations including local shops, art venues, cafes and hotels in the town. The violins represent Banchory’s musical history being the birth place of James Scott Skinner born in Banchory in 1843. Known as ‘The Strathspey King’ he is one of the greatest violinists and composers of Scottish traditional music composing many tunes which are still played worldwide. Inspired by themes of local heritage, nature, landscape and wildlife, each violin piece is truly a unique work of art to be enjoyed by visitors over the summer months. All violins are available to purchase and will be offered for sale by auction in the autumn. The trail has been developed by Banchory & District Initiative and supported by Banchory Business Association. More information about each of the participating artists and details of host locations can be found at www. visitbanchory.com/things-to-do/violin trail/ The Banchory Violin Trail runs until September 27th.

Support for families living with dementia got a boost towards the end of May when the Forget-Me-Not Club's Burnett House re-opened its doors following lockdown. There was live-streamed music, dancing, games, activities, nail painting and a healthy lunch to keep visitors amused. A group representative said: "Thanks to all the FMN team who worked so hard to make this possible and for welcoming our members back in a gentle, warm, kind and caring manner. "It was lovely to see the first two members walk back in the door and we look forward to welcoming more as we gradually get back to normal." The King George V Community Wind Turbine Fund is now open for applications. The fund was created three years ago to distribute a donation from a local farmer who has two wind turbines. A government renewable energy scheme provides farmers with funding to erect turbines in return they make a donation to community projects. The King George V Community Project Trust formed an award panel comprising of representatives from the seven community councils in the AB31 area. The panel was ably chaired by Karen Clark up until March this year. Over the past two years the panel have awarded £18,000 to local groups. It has contributed to projects in Lumphanan, Drumoak, Torphins, Finzean, Strachan, Inchmarlo and Banchory. A grant up to £1000 is available to groups based in the AB31 area, or to groups with members who live in the AB31 area. The priority is for projects that are supporting people in sport, arts, culture or environment. For more information contact kgvwindturbinefund@gmail.com
The Community Pantry in Banchory continues to hold a twice a week fruit and vegetable stall, on Wednesday and Saturday from 10-2pm. The sale of the produce generates a small profit which is used to pay the costs of running the pantry such as rent and electricity. The fresh produce comes from a wholesaler, Turriffs of Montrose. They also supply vegetable boxes to customers via their online store. The pantry also has a range of local produce for sale. Honey from Glassel, Katy’s eggs from Torphins and our own made jams and chutney. The pantry is part of the Fareshare network which reduces food waste by sharing food that is going out of date in supermarkets and local shops. Food that is about to go out of date or where packaging is damaged is shared or cooked into meals. Over the past year almost 8000kg of food has been shared through the pantry. Keep an eye on pantry opening hours as we may increase them during the summer.

Choir's virtual concert success Zoom format no bar to enjoyment, says Dave Valentine
Another large global audience enjoyed Banchory Singers’ second virtual concert. In the process, over £1,000 was raised for three local charities, One to One Deeside Counselling Service; The Seed Box Social Enterprise; and The Forget Me Not Club dementia support resource centre. Rehearsing and performing online is the only option open to choirs during Covid-19 restrictions. Building on the success of their Christmas Concert, choir members led by musical director Tara Leiper, have been working hard since January to improve both the sound and the appearance of their virtual concert. This required learning about new technology as well as learning songs. This was all worth it, judging from the enthusiastic and complimentary comments from an audience of viewers from Canada, Norway, Germany, USA, France and Ireland; and in the UK, from Edinburgh, London, Northampton and Cornwall; not forgetting the loyal local audience in and around Banchory. A special moment during the concert was the world premiere of We Are Stronger Than We Believe, a song composed by Tara, with a musical motif by accompanist Shona Elliot and using the words of choir members. Words that reflected personal experiences of the highs and lows of lockdown. This song is also the choir’s entry into this year’s Aberdeen and North East Music Festival. The Spring Concert usually offers a showcase to young musicians to perform and, thanks to Zoom, this year was no different. Cellist, Gemma Ramsay, and pianist Hugh Fisher beamed into the concert from their homes to give two very enjoyable solo performances. Being online didn’t stop the concert having its usual high level of audience participation with a prize draw, caption competition, and singalong numbers, including a couple of ‘mutes off’ choruses just to give everyone a taste of why the online time delay makes
communal singing impossible. The ensuing cacophony reduced everyone to laughter. In thanking everyone who contributed to the successful concert, chairperson Marion Mathie said: “We want to give a special thank you to our musical director, Tara Leiper, who has made a huge effort, over and above our usual rehearsals, to help our singers record their contributions and then to meld them into a single track that sounds very like our usual collective voice. We are of course longing for the day when we can return to communal singing and to giving actual, real live concerts again.” Tara added: “I’m so pleased our choir members willingly rose to the many challenges of producing a virtual concert. It has kept us in good voice but just as importantly it has helped us to weather the pressures of lockdown, and to realise that, in the words of our song, ‘we are stronger than we believe’.”
After a short summer break the choir are hoping that a return to in-person rehearsals will be possible but whatever the circumstances, they are determined to produce a 2021 Christmas Concert, whether actual or virtual. Book places spotlight on family mental health Couple publish honest account of married life with schizophrenia
At some point in their lives, one in 100 people will suffer from an episode of schizophrenia and, each year, one in four will experience a mental health problem, according to Mind UK. At any one time, 220,000 people are being treated for schizophrenia in the UK by the NHS. Mental health can and does affect thousands of people in the UK and impacts on the lives of individuals and their relationships. Cameron Leiper was diagnosed with chronic paranoid schizophrenia in 1988, lives in Alford with his wife Tara, music director of Banchory Singers, and a new book charts the struggles they have experienced. Is This Real? has been co-written by the couple, allowing each author to express what life is like with mental illness at the centre of their relationship. It is a candid, thoughtful, and at times, unsettling account of their lives, revealing the upset and anxiety caused by the chasm between the rational and irrational as they go

about daily activities. The book, published by Cherish Editions, opens up the conversation surrounding schizophrenia, providing pragmatic and supportive advice to those whose lives have been impacted by the disorder. Drawing on her own experience, Tara explores the way in which the condition has affected her and her husband’s relationship, discussing both the low points as well as the high. She provides advice every step of the way, making this lived experience book an indispensable companion for carers. Proceeds will raise vital funds for Shawmind, a Newark-based mental health charity, which has previously campaigned to make mental health education compulsory in UK schools. Is This Real? Our Story of Living With Schizophrenia by Cameron and Tara Leiper is available in paperback and Kindle versions. ISBN: 9781913615130 cherisheditions.com
Fly print run extends to 5,000
Autumn trial hopes to see magazine grow further It's been almost three years since I took on the Fly and I'd like to expand its distribution. For the Autumn issue (out early September) I am investing in a one-off trial print run of 5,000 copies (usually 2,000) and also in getting more copies delivered through doors. I am hoping this will extend awareness of the magazine and draw in new readers and advertisers. So now is a good time to get on board! catrionahouston@yahoo.co.uk | 07805 731401 | Facebook

The Fly relies on advertising to pay for design and printing and it means a lot that so many regular customers have continued to advertise during the Covid calamity. Always delighted to welcome new advertisers, I have opened up opportunities with a new value ad size, see p32. At Myriad Pro Publishing, advertisers are not just a space on a page. All advertisers benefit from featuring in a Facebook album every quarter, and where advertisers’ own posts are seen on that social media platform, they will be shared. Feel free to tag The Fly to make sure. New customers can also benefit from introductory features, and there are perks to being a long-term advertiser too, as well as discounts for featuring in the Alford and Aboyne publications. The business landscape and publicity methods are changing all the time, and especially at the moment! So if you have any ideas on how The Fly can further support you, do let me know. No matter if you are on the main street, out in the sticks, working from your spare room or just operating online, I can help. Have you started a new business in the Banchory area? Want a mention? Water Safety Advice Highlighted ACCP recommends users visit Fire Service website
Aberdeenshire Community Planning Partnership (Marr) would like to draw people’s attention to safety around water in the region. Scotland enjoys some the most beautiful rivers, lochs, canals and reservoirs that the UK has to offer – they attract thousands of visitors each year, and Deeside is no exception. With the continuation of the Year of Coasts and Waters into 2021, it’s important to remember though that if you’re visiting one of these spots, be that regularly or as a one-off, water can pose risks. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has put together some useful advice, aimed at runners, dog-walkers, fishers and drinkers, on their comprehensive website. There is also advice on what to do if you find yourself in the water. Go to www.firescotland.gov.uk/yoursafety/water-safety.aspx Parents, guardians and teachers can also use the information to talk to children about water safety.

Woolly Tails
from LilyK Yarn Shop
Like to know where your wool comes from? Here's just one example... Dessland, a small farm in Kincardine O’Neil, started breeding Ryeland Sheep in 2012, with the aim of breeding good stock with special attention to conformation and wool quality. A proud Member of the Scottish Ryeland Group, they had some successful showing seasons, including the latest in 2019, where among several prizes they also won prizes for Wool on the Hoof. For the first time in 2020 they sent their fleeces to a mill to get spun into lovely 100% Ryeland wool to produce 100 gram 4-ply balls. This yarn is a blend of both their white and dark fleece. LilyK Yarn shop in Banchory sells these lovely balls of wool ,which you can use for knitting and crochet projects and you can ask LilyK for pattern suggestions. Pick your way to better health
New litter stations are a boon to Banchory, writes Linda McPhee Mike Scotland is a Banchory ”loon” and is already an award-winning major influencer, setting up manUP speakUP to support the mental health of those working offshore. He is also responsible for the revolutionary movement, Community CleanUp, encouraging people to look after their local areas, pick up litter and benefit mentally from the exercise, sense of community and positive changes. Mike is really proud that Banchory is the first place to take on the "Pick and Collect" stations, which will soon be installed within the village to allow anyone to litterpick and bring back the renowned beauty of our own piece of Royal Deeside. The three stations for Banchory were kindly made by the Men’s Shed and kitted out with the support of Banchory Community Council, Aberdeenshire Council, Keep Scotland Beautiful and Mike, allowing YOU to pick your way to better health and preserve our beautiful heritage and environment.
The storage station pictured above was built by Men's Shed member Alan Pumfrey and is located in George V Park.

Setting up your garden for Summer Wendy Simpson of Craigievar Gardeners offers seasonal tips to help you get the best from your patch, large or small... Right now most of us are surveying the frost damage to our gardens with dismay. Even comparatively hardy and wellestablished shrubs have suffered gravely from a drawn-out winter. No matter how bad things look, be patient. Resist the urge to prune out damaged areas until all risk of further frost has passed because pruning will encourage new growth, which will make the plant doubly susceptible to cold damage. Wait as long as you can, and remember that even plants pruned close to the ground can recover because the base of the plant and its roots are the areas least susceptible to injury from freezing. Treat your lawn to a high-nitrogen feed using a combined weed- and moss-killing product and scarify if necessary. Reseed or turf any bare patches. May is a good month to plant up tubs, hanging baskets and window boxes for colour that will last all summer. Feed containers every couple of weeks with a liquid fertilizer. Prepare your borders for planting by weeding them thoroughly. Spread a thick layer of mulch over the soil to discourage regrowth and retain moisture. Give your hedges a light trim but check for nesting birds first. Prune early-flowering shrubs like ribes and forsythia after they have flowered. Wait until all risk of late frost has passed before you plant out dahlias and bedding plants. Harden off plants raised from seed in a cold frame for at least a week beforehand. Plant out early sowings of kale, spinach and salad leaves. Earth up potatoes to prevent light reaching the tubers as they grow. Start sowings of vegetables like beetroot, cucumbers and sprouting
24
broccoli in a greenhouse. Sow late flowerers such as cosmos, poppies, nicotiana, verbena bonariensis, cornflowers and zinnias in a greenhouse for later planting in gaps in borders. Deadhead daffodils and tulips as they die back, but leave the foliage to wither naturally. Insert supports for taller herbaceous plants, especially those with heavy blooms, such as peonies. Your supports will work better and will gradually disappear into the foliage if you get them in early. Dust off your garden furniture and put your feet up!

Winter Wellness Wins
Deeside Fitness's Winter Wellness and Fitness Challengers looked after their physical and mental health by running, walking, cycling and swimming. The participants of the challenge covered a staggering 9,020 miles and raised £805 for One to One Counselling Aboyne. Rhona Blackhall challenged anyone who wanted to join up to complete as many miles as possible in the run up to Christmas, by their means of choice and to keep her updated on their progress. There were also weekly wellness tips and advice, healthy recipes and exercise videos to do at home thanks also to Vikki Cleal and Lynne Mollison (One Soul Yoga) who provided yoga on Zoom and You Tube. The group set themselves the goal of covering the distance of Banchory to Bethleham by Christmas, which they smashed. The challenge was very inclusive, allowing people to set their own personal goals

and modes of covering their distance and we had one young lad complete the challenge using his walking frame, a true inspiration to us all. The success of the challenge, and the prospect of more lockdowns meant it continued on through January, Febuary and March, giving us all a great focus and getting us outdoors in all weather conditions, rain, snow or shine.
