ith a well-equipped gym, a golf course, tennis courts, a stylish beauty salon and a popular eatery, Aberdeen’s Kippie Lodge is a one-stop lifestyle destination. Situated on North Deeside Road near the suburb of Milltimber, the sports and wellness club boasts a whole range of indoor and outdoor activities for all ages to enjoy. One person who regularly spends her time at the premises is Kippie Lodge client Aimee Smith. The mum-of-three, who works as a sales and marketing manager in real estate, has been a member of the multi-purpose leisure facility for a couple of years. And now, she says she treats the leisure centre like her second home. We caught up with Aimee to find out what makes Kippie Lodge’s services and amenities so attractive to her and her family. “The atmosphere in Kippie Lodge is really friendly and everyone knows me by my name now,” said Aimee. “I treat the centre almost like my second home. “I have hosted my birthday parties there and I often have meetings with my clients in their cafe, too. “The cafe is kind of like my second living room and I treat the outdoor area as if it was my own garden. “In summer my family and I use the outdoor play area all the time.” Boasting a variety of social activities, Aimee also loves taking part in group and family events. She said: “We went to the Easter egg hunt and my kids also loved the bouncy castle in summer.” Offering a wide range of fitness classes for its members of all abilities, Aimee goes out of her way to use the facilities five days a week. She added: “I really like their gym circuit, boot camp, HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and I also do TRX (total resistance exercise) suspension training. But there are many more classes to choose from.” Kippie Lodge also has classes including barre, which incorporates some movements derived from ballet, pilates, yoga, zumba, aqua circuits and many other fitness classes for its 3,500 members to try out. The centre’s nine-hole golf course, which is located in a woodland area on-site surrounded by trees, is also very popular, especially with Aimee’s husband Mark who uses the facilites. But it’s not just her other half who reaps the benefits of Kippie Lodge, but their children too. She said: “My husband uses the golf course facilities
Wellbeing/Fitness Classes If it’s cardio classes you enjoy, Kippie has over 100 fitness classes ranging from low to high impact Les Mills and freestyle classes. Kippie’s wellbeing classes run throughout the week onsite and online which include Yoga, Pilates and Nia. All wellbeing and Cardio classes are included in the membership fee.

and my boys – Charlie and Freddie – go to tennis classes and ‘learn to swim’ lessons. “My son Hugo is too young for normal swimming lessons so he goes to private ones. “I like to use the swimming pool and sauna, too. “And during the weekend we go swimming during ‘splash time’ as a family because that’s when my kids don’t have to be quiet and use lanes, but instead they can use floats and have fun.” Kippie Lodge also has a small physiotherapy team, which helps their members treat sports injuries, muscle and ligament strains and joint problems. They also offer electrotherapy, acupuncture, soft tissue mobilisation, pilates and postural advice. Aimee said: “I don’t use their physiotherapist service on a regular basis but I was happy with the service I received in the past. “What I use more often are their beauty facilities. “My kids have their hair cut there and I often go for manicures and pedicures. “I buy my shampoo and hair brushes from their beauty salon as well.” Kippie Lodge’s hair and beauty salon, which has been operating for more than two decades, offers an array of luxury treatments including facials, massages, waxing, and nail and eyelash treatments for both members and non-members in a relaxed and friendly environment.
After exercising and getting pampered, Aimee also likes to treat herself and her family to a tasty meal. She said: “We go to the restaurant twice a week for our tea. “Kippie Lodge’s Crathes Restaurant & Bar offer a tasty carvery on Sundays and their burgers and vegetable dishes are really nice, too. “I also often get their home-made protein bowls which are my go-to after a gym class.” Using only the best locally-sourced ingredients, the eatery offers a range of healthy sandwiches, toasties, salads, light bites as well as main dishes. The centre’s conservatory provides an attractive family dining experience, with indoor and outdoor play areas. Robin Caldwell, club director at Kippie Lodge, also thinks 2020 will be another exciting year for the leisure centre. He said: “Investments in the club will include a refurbishment of bays, target areas, lighting for the driving range and the introduction of a heated double-skinned tennis dome, allowing all-year play in comfortable surroundings. “We pride ourselves on offering an activity for all ages and this, coupled with events such as quiz nights, BBQs and family fun days, makes Kippie a great lifestyle choice for your family for 2020.” Visit kippielodge.co.uk for more information

A job opportunity has arisen to support the development of Zero Waste Deeside. Number One Banchory is working with Deeside CAN to develop waste reduction initiatives and thanks to a grant from National Lottery, they can offer a fixed term position for 400 hours over 12 months to support the initiative. The Zero Waste Deeside project aims to raise awareness of how to get to zero waste in Deeside, essential to reaching the Net Zero target by 2045, which was set by the Scottish Government. Three sub-projects include Farm to Fork, Upcycling and Repair and Recycling Awareness. Email deesidecan@gmail.com Free badges and lanyards have been launched in Scotland for people worried about Covid risks in public spaces. The items, which show a yellow shield, signal that the wearer would like others to give them extra space. The Distance Aware scheme is aimed at people at high risk or those who are nervous about mixing with others. The badges and lanyards are available from Aberdeenshire's libraries and Asda.

Royal Voluntary Service are currently recruiting for volunteers and open to receiving referrals for those who need help with transport, shopping, or social companionship. During the pandemic we continued to support vulnerable people in the community and our aim is to keep on reaching those in need.
Our dedicated volunteers help take people to medical appointments or social appointments. This can be to a hospital appointment; your GP; dentist; opticians or to visit a family member in a care home; a social group or hairdressers! We can take someone further afield to a hospital appointment such as to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. We can also help with shopping by a volunteer doing your shop (shop and drop) or you can go with a volunteer (assisted shopping). If you would like to be linked to a friendly volunteer to call you regularly for a chat, RVS can find someone for you. How do I refer: We accept self-referrals or from any organisation/family member/friend/neighbour. We are happy to consider referrals from people of any adult age. There is a charge to using the transport or assisted shopping service. How do I volunteer: To join our volunteer team, we are committed to ensuring our volunteers are trained to the highest standard and provided with ongoing support including COVID-19 safety guidance; PPE and expenses are reimbursed for mileage. Please contact the Grampian Team on 01467 626012 or 01224 937110 or email grampiansupport@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk and a member of the team will be delighted to speak to you.

Group Focus: Banchory and District Round Table has raised £16,000 for local good causes – from sports clubs to a charity supporting vulnerable children and families. The organisation, which also provided hot meals to residents without power during Storm Arwen, holds fundraising events throughout the year. Round Table member Colin Redman, a chef who heads Birdhouse Café in the High Street, said: “We try to help out in our community, while working as a team and having fun.” Donations were made to Deeside Rugby Club; Number 1 Banchory, a multi-purpose space which offers volunteer placements for all ages and Banchory Men’s Shed, which has teamed up with Legion Scotland to promote members’ wellbeing and exservicemen in need. Funds were also raised for AberNecessities, a charity which provides essential items to underprivileged families to care for their children, and Scout and Guide groups. The team also helped fund a wheelchair for a boy in the village. Members also rallied round to help residents during Storm Arwen – when thousands of trees were blown over and homes lost power as lines were brought down. Round Table members followed the organisation’s principles of “adopt, adapt, improve’ to help those in need. A team of chainsaw operators worked to remove or make safe as many trees as possible during the storm – and members shared warnings and updates on their social media. Members also delivered over 150 hot meals a night, three times a week, from the Birdhouse Café. Father-of-two Colin, who runs the
10
café with his wife, Ruth, said: “We reached out to community leaders to see how we could help. They needed hot food – and we could assist. “We then had to distribute the food to a lot of people, while keeping it hot, which is where our coordinated efforts came together. “The Round Table family put in a real team effort to make sure the food was delivered to vulnerable people across lots of small villages.” The Round Table is open to those who identify as male, aged 18 to 45. It hosts social gatherings and runs events for local charities. It organises the annual Banchory Bonfire and Fireworks, an event which has been held for almost 40 years. Number One Pop-up Grocer is now open around the corner down Postie Walk, behind the Banchory Store. The fruit and veg stall is open on Wednesday and Saturday from 9.30am to 2pm. We supply a wide range of fruit and vegetables from the wholesaler Turriffs of Montrose. Veg boxes are available to order from either ourselves or direct from Turriffs. We also supply local eggs, honey and preserves. Our ready meal selection is made in house from excess produce to reduce waste. At £2 a portion you can have homemade soups, main courses and desserts.
Banchory now has a Community Fridge at Number One, which is part of the national network of 250 projects managed by Hubbub. The Co-op has provided funding for the initiative which includes training and purchase of an actual refrigerator. Over 7000 tonnes of food is saved from being discarded to landfill by volunteers who collect produce from shops that is at the use by date. Although it cannot be sold, low-risk produce can still be used, so it is given away, free to anyone who wants it. The Banchory Fridge is based in Postie Walk off the High Street. It is open on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am. Anyone can pick up the produce, it is all free as the aim is to reduce food waste. In the past year over 5,000kg of food has been collected from Banchory Tesco and given away to local residents.

The Fly relies on advertising to pay for design and printing and it means a lot that so many regular customers have continued to advertise during the Covid calamity. Always delighted to welcome new advertisers, I have opened up opportunities with a new value ad size, see p26. At Myriad Pro Publishing, advertisers are not just a space on a page. All advertisers benefit from featuring in a Facebook album every quarter, and where advertisers’ own posts are seen on that social media platform, they will be shared. Feel free to tag The Fly to make sure. New customers can also benefit from introductory features, and there are perks to being a long-term advertiser too, as well as discounts for featuring in the Alford and Aboyne publications. The business landscape and publicity methods are changing all the time, and especially at the moment! So if you have any ideas on how The Fly can further support you, do let me know. No matter if you are on the main street, out in the sticks, working from your spare room or just operating online, I can help.

Getting Ready for SPRING... Wendy Simpson of Craigievar Gardeners offers seasonal tips to help you get the best from your patch, large or small... This winter’s storms will have wrought havoc in many of our gardens. The first thing to do is to prune back damaged trees or shrubs in order to make clean wounds. Then, assuming you have cleared up the debris, prepare your borders and vegetable patches by digging in a 5-cm layer of compost or well-rotted manure. Apply mulch around trees and shrubs and feed hedges with a slow-release fertilizer. Cut back any cornus or salix that have provided your winter colour. Then, on to the fun stuff. Now is the time to split clumps of snowdrops to encourage them to spread. Split overgrown clumps of perennials and disseminate them. Insert supports for
perennials as they begin to grow because it’s much easier to do it now than later! This is your last chance to prune apple and pear trees. You can also prune your roses, but don’t be tempted to do this until any danger of late frost has passed. Prune raspberry canes by cutting out dead or spindly canes and tie the rest of them into row supports. Prune hydrangeas by cutting each stem back to a healthy bud. Cut back buddleia and late-flowering clematis. Clear ponds of weeds and winter debris. Prepare your vegetable beds so that you can sow as soon as the soil temperature reaches 6°C. Start with onions, shallots, carrots, leeks, spring onions, beetroot, spinach, lettuces and rockets. Leave potatoes until mid-April. Plant summerflowering bulbs like gladioli and lilies in pots so that they are ready to plant out as soon as any danger of frost has passed. Plant nerines for autumn colour. If you have a heated propagator, sow seeds for pelargoniums, begonias, delphiniums, foxgloves and antirrhinums in it. They need a longer and warmer start-up.
