Welcome to Issue 15 of The Fly.
So, cards on the table: I have to let The Fly fly... The magazine concept is profitable, and always has been. Businesses want to advertise in printed media locally (and lots of people outside the area want to advertise to Banchory too!) but I am just too far away to be able to concentrate on seeking regular editorial content and doing the many fabulous events, groups and organisations here their proper justice. The job would be be�er suited to someone living in the Banchory area, with an interest in or connections to community events and issues. Design/ publishing skills would also be useful but not essential. I taught myself and there are more readily available online programs now that make that job easier. I will continue producing the Fly until the end of the year (Winter issue) but anyone interested in taking up the reins is welcome to get in touch. Stress: this is a commercial enterprise, not a voluntary commitment! It pays... :-) If you have any news for the Autumn edition (out early Sept), tell me about it by email to myriadprocat@outlook. com by August 1st if you can. Enjoy!

Banchory Recrea�on Ground will open at weekends from 12noon to 5pm from Saturday 4th June, when bowling, tennis and putting facilities available for all. The Dee Street facilities include an 18-hole putting green, three new tennis courts, bowling green and a chlldren's mini-tennis court – the only one in the county! Founded in 1903, on land donated to the people of Banchory by Burne� of Leys, the Bowling Club has been at the centre of Banchory life for many years. Over the years it has been run/owned by the British Legion, Banchory District Council, Kincardine and Deeside District Council, then Aberdeenshire Council. Around 2000, it was handed over to the members of the bowling club to run and maintain, but is still owned by the council. Community Tennis Memberships are available, allowing unlimited access to members. Courts will be open to members from April to November 2022. Family Membership – £50 Individual Membership – £25 Junior Membership (17 + under) – £15 The Recreation Ground will be open every day, 12noon to 5pm, from the start of the school summer break on July 2nd. Trust secures cash for Sta�on Wood
The Scottish Land Fund have awarded Crathes Public Hall Trust £22,515 to buy Station Wood from the National Trust for Scotland for a community woodland. Moira Hamilton, Convener, Board of Trustees, Crathes Public Hall Trust, said: “We are delighted to be awarded this Scottish Land Fund grant which will enable us to purchase the 2.2 acres of woodland surrounding our current and future community hall for events such as barbecues, picnics, children’s nature clubs, environmental and educational activities and to use as an outside space for hall weddings and for short walks, relaxation and meditation. The community have enthusiastically supported this project and are keen to get involved in planting trees and a hedge as well as organising activities in the wood.” To see drone video of the woodland on the group's website, visit their website at www.crathes-hall.co.uk

Banchory Drama Club news from Angela Walker
February brought a start to the new year for the Banchory Drama Club and we entered two plays in the annual Scottish Community Drama Festival. ‘Just Another Day’ by Drew Young made it through to the second round whilst ‘Hazel Dean 1985’ wri�en by the cast and directed by Iain Bovaird made a strong showing. Both plays, along with the winning entry from Aberdeen’s Bon Accord Club were performed in Banchory at the end of April. A bonus came with the news that ‘Just Another Day’ had won the Sco� Salver awarded for the best new play entered in the Festival. That’s the second time ‘our playwright’ has won the award. His previous success was ‘Triptych’ in 2017.

We are looking for people to get involved in all areas of the theatrical experience – actors, technical support, costumes, and set painting. "In the social area, filter coffee was lubricating putting the 'world to rights'. They are doing a great deal to support their local community. Getting round the current timber crisis by helping local folk reuse and re-purpose surplus wood for bird and bat boxes and raised planters. The workshop was a hive of industry with a young man benefiting from the Shedders' skills and wisdom. The model railway is impressive. There is something for everyone at Banchory and District Men's Shed."
