Five Cities. One Bike. One Bloke. Dave cuts a 660-mile path for charity

Banchory man David Culshaw has decided to get on his bike (again) to raise money for a local charity. After cycling from Land’s End to John O Groats to raise money for Stonehaven Pool, Braemar Mountain Rescue and Marie Curie in 2006 before doing it again in the opposite direction in 2009 to raise money for Marie Curie, this time the charity is Banchory Paths Association, a Scottish Charity, with a remit of maintaining, publicising and developing the local path network. Many of the paths in Banchory, David’s home town for the last 40 years, are little more than ‘Trod’ paths which become very muddy and overgrown at certain time of year and in adverse weather conditions. After recently completing the upgrade of a path in the East end of Banchory (a Deeside Way link from Pantoch), BPA is now raising money to completely refurbish

4

and upgrade two paths into Corsee Woods to form a circular walk on a high quality path. The path will be suitable for folk with disabilities, families, parents with buggies etc to walk at any time of year. It is hoped to encourage more people to enjoy their local environment without jumping into a car! The total cost of the complete project will be £30 000 and Project Officer David hopes to raise £5,000 towards this. David is cycling from Banchory to five of the major cities in Scotland, using the National Cycle Network, which consists entirely of minor roads and dedicated cycle routes. He is allowing 11 days for the cycle and he will cover 660 miles. He left Banchory on Wednesday 22nd May so by the time you read this he may well be finished! If you would like to support David or BPA in any way please visit his website: www. davidcyclefivecities.com. Alternatively you can contact the Fund Raising Convener or Treasurer on bpabanchorycommittee@ gmail.com

Dorinda Remembered

Family and friends of the late Dorinda Adam presented the Banchory Gardening Club with a Quaich as a memorial trophy to celebrate her life. Dorinda was the club’s show coordinator for three years and had assisted in the role for three years prior. She was responsible for organising the annual shows for the Gardening Club. She

By appointment to HRH the Prince of Wales Purveyor of Meat and Poultry

carried out her duties with professionalism and this was reflected in the high standard which resulted. Dorinda also took an active part in her own class exhibits. She shared in all the activities and encouraged new and existing members with her delighul and friendly manner. She very sadly died during the weekend of the 2018 show which she had worked so hard to set up. She is very greatly missed and it is hoped that the trophy will serve to remind members of the contribution Dorinda made to Banchory. The trophy was accepted by Rebecca Stripling and Etta Hayward on behalf of the Banchory Gardening Club. Dorinda had been a resident of Banchory for some 10 years and was involved in many local activities such as The Talking Newspaper and the charity Save the Children.

Citizens’ Advice Bureau The True Cost of Free Advice Book up Turn up The South West Aberdeenshire Citizens Advice Bureau is a local charity based in Westhill providing free advice, information, advocacy and representation to residents in the South West Aberdeenshire community. We offer good quality, independent support to hundreds of people through confidential advice provided by trained advisers and volunteers. However, many consultations are being wasted because clients fail to show up to their appointments. Each hourly appointment costs us £97 and sometimes we experience nearly 50% “no-shows” in a day. We do not overbook to allow for all clients to be seen as promised; unfortunately this means that when we have a “no-show” someone else who may have a serious problem misses out, as that slot can’t be filled at short notice. Cancelling appointments in good time allows our advisers to see other clients who otherwise need to wait for up to three weeks to receive advice. As an independent charity, we rely heavily on volunteers, grants and donations to keep our operation running. If we are to continue being able to provide critical services to the community, we urge clients to contact us by phone or email if they are unable to attend an appointment, with as much notice as possible. For more information, please call us at our Banchory outreach office at Units 8 & 9, Scott Skinner Square (Posties’ Walk off the High Street), AB31 5SE Phone: 01330 825551

Shared Lives can offer people the chance to contribute to real friendships and become active, and valued citizens with a sense of belonging and confidence in themselves. We match people over 16 years of age with a disability, mental health issue or dementia with someone who shares the same interests. The support is unique in that it is based in and around the Shared Lives carer’s home and community, sharing hobbies and interests together. This partnership is flexible and can range from a few hours during the day or evenings, at weekends or weekdays, to short breaks and longer placements. The Shared Lives scheme can offer support to older people from the Marr area where we have been granted new funding from Shared Lives plus via the Prince of Wales Charitable Foundation. We hope to make connections with already established services, groups and voluntary agencies to provide this service to older people who feel isolated and want support to live life to their full potential. This support can be day activities and short breaks, and access to the service is through a referral from the person’s care manager. Shared Lives is currently recruiting carers in all areas of Aberdeenshire and the Marr area for our new funding. The Shared Lives carers are trained and supported by Aberdeenshire Council. The carers are self-employed, and they can work flexible hours to fit in with their lives and family. If you could offer a person with a disability or an older person a few hours respite or more or if you want more information about accessing the service contact the Shared Lives team. Tel: 07824 837791 email: sharedlives@aberdeenshire.gov.uk, www.aberdeenshire.gov/sharedlives

Crathes Hall News The Board of Trustees at Crathes Hall are delighted to be able to confirm that the plans for the new hall are now ready to be submitted for planning approval. They would like to take this opportunity to thank architect Andrew Keir and all the many others who have been involved with the project to date. The current hall is very much still open for business with possibilities for both daytime and evening classes bookings available. If you would like to come and see the hall for yourself, why not come along to the ever-popular “Crathes Fly” which is held on the first Saturday of every month between 10am and midday. If you would like more information contact hall.crathes@gmail.com or you’ll find them on facebook or on the website www.crathes.com/hall.htm

Community Round-Up Banchory has its very own website which can be found at either www. visitbanchory.com or www.banchory.org. The site was created about five years ago with funding support from Aberdeenshire Council and is managed by volunteers with Banchory & District Initiatives. The number of local people using the site has dropped recently. That may be because not many people know it is there or maybe because the information is out of date. To fix the first reason, could you all have a look and tell your friends, let us know what is missing and how to improve it? To fix the second reason, if you are a group member, business or individual please let us know you are out there. Over 2,000 people do look at the site every month, it is the top-ranked site for searching ‘Banchory’. The site also has a calendar of events with an easy self-submission page or email info@visitbanchory.com

Number One Banchory is a community cafe and social space. The cafe is open MonThurs from 10am-4pm while the meeting rooms are available to book from 9am-9pm. The food on offer is made on-site by our volunteers and staff, all homemade soups, puddings and cakes. The lunch special is soup, pudding and tea/coffee for £5. Thanks to grants and donations the cafe is now able to offer more volunteer placements for people who need 1:1 support. Two new co-workers have been employed to work alongside the volunteers to give additional support. If you have a friend or relative who may like to volunteer but may need an extra hand to get going let us know by calling 01330 825000 or email: numberonebanchory@ gmail.com

“Ready, Steady, Almost There” is a social group meeting in Number One Cafe every Friday evening from 4.30pm. Anyone is welcome, however the main aim of the group is to provide a space and activity for people who may be recovering from an illness, loss, or feeling down. As the name suggests, there is a meal which will be made by the participants from whatever produce is available from the local community garden and herbal trail. Activities will depend on the weather and what people want to do. Recently the group has been planting next years crop of potatoes and out with their cameras to take photographs of the area. As the group leader is a local artist and maker there will be opportunities to do pottery and painting. If you wish to attend or know anyone who would benefit from an evening out you can contact 01330 825000 leaving a message for Beatrice, or just turn up from 4.30pm on Friday.

Dibble’s Doodles

our gardening columnist gets some divine inspiration... Food for thought: GOD to ST FRANCIS: Frank, you know all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there on the planet? What happened to the dandelions, violets, milkweeds and stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long-lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honey bees and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colours by now but, all I see are these green rectangles. ST FRANCIS: It’s the tribes that settled there, Lord – the Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers weeds and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass. GOD: Grass? But, it’s so boring. It’s not colourful. It doesn’t attract butterflies, birds and bees; only grubs and worms. It’s sensitive to temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want all that grass growing there? ST FRANCIS: Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. They begin each spring by fertilising the grass and poisoning any other plant that crops up in the lawn. GOD: The spring rains and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy. ST FRANCIS: Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it – sometimes twice a week. GOD: They cut it? Do they then bale it like hay? ST FRANCIS: Not exactly, Lord.

10

Most of them rake it up and put it in bags. GOD: They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it? ST FRANCIS: No Sir, just the opposite. They pay to throw it away. GOD: Now, let me get this straight. They fertilise grass so it will grow. And, when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away? ST FRANCIS: Yes Sir. GOD: These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work. ST FRANCIS: You aren’t going to believe this, Lord. When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it, so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it. GOD: What nonsense. At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn, they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. It’s a natural cycle of life. ST FRANCIS: You better sit down Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away.

GOD: No!? What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the winter to keep the soil moist and loose? ST FRANCIS: After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves. GOD: And where do they get this mulch? ST FRANCIS: They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch. GOD: Enough! I don’t want to think about this any more. St Catherine, you’re in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight? ST CATHERINE: ‘Dumb and Dumber’, Lord. It’s a story about... GOD: Never mind, I think I just heard the whole story from St Francis. Happy Mowing! Foodbank here to help

Philosophy Group with Bob Russell

The Banchory Philosophy Discussion Group met in April. Eight hardy souls braved the rainy evening to meet and discuss “What is a Country” under the hospitality of the Number One premises in Scott Skinner Square. After concluding the important business of getting cups of tea for all, we sat down to what proved to be a lively debate. What could be described as a wide ranging discussion (by which I mean we drifted off topic in all possible directions, including being temporarily becalmed in the fetid waters of Brexit) eventually returned to the main topic and concluded by agreeing that we hadn’t been able to pin down a real definition. So, since philosophy has been said to be “not a subject” but more “a way of thinking about other subjects”, I think we achieved our goal! If you are interested in joining us, please email, or give me a call: Bob Russell, russellb@lodgeconsultancy.com, or 01330 820376. The group decides their next meeting date as they go along but so far the last Thursday of the month has proved popular.

If you suddenly find yourself with no money to buy food, the Foodbank can help you with three days’ worth of food supplies and toiletries. To receive this free assistance, you should ask for a voucher from a frontline agency, such as Citizen’s Advice, Council Housing and Social Work, HomeStart, or contact the Foodbank for advice on your nearest voucher holder. Aberdeenshire South Foodbank is based on Mount Street, just off the High Street in Banchory, and is open on Wednesdays and Fridays 1-3pm. Sometimes food parcels can be delivered. At the moment our volunteer numbers and stock levels are enough to run the operation, but please do check with us if you wish to contribute in any way. The Foodbank operates in total confidentiality, always seeking to restore dignity and revive hope for those in crisis.

The Fly LOVES Business!

The new Fly relies on advertising to pay for design and printing. But our advertisers are not just a space on a page. All advertisers also benefit from featuring in a Facebook album every quarter, and where advertisers’ posts are seen, they are shared. Feel free to tag The Fly to make sure we see it. New businesses who advertise can also benefit from introductory features, and there are perks to being a longterm advertiser too, or featuring in our Aboyne and Alford publications also. The business landscape and publicity methods are changing all the time so if you have any ideas on how The Fly can further support you, do let us know. No maer if you are on the High Street, out in the sticks, working from your spare room or just online, get in touch.
