Panto goes pirate

Banchory Drama Club are proud to present their 2019 annual pantomime: Return to Tweasure Island written by Drew Young and directed by Paul Foy. Audiences should expect the usual pirate shenanigans but with a twist. When Young Rafe James Ladd-Hawkins finds a treasure map he thinks his fortune is made. He enlists the help of Black Doug, “treasure seeking specialist” and Long Jane Silver, “lady sailing cook” to help him. They set sail aboard the “His Spanish Onion” with a rag tag collection of not very cutthroat pirates. But is all as it seems? Can Rafe and his mum trust the pirates? What happens when they bump into hungry cannibals? And will Monkey find his chicken? All will be revealed in this fun family pantomime. Performances are on the evenings of Thursday 5th, Friday 6th and Saturday 7th December in the Banchory Town Hall.

Farmers' market dates September 21st October 19 November 16 December 21

There will also be a Matinee performance on Saturday 7th December. For more information or to get involved, go to: www.banchorydramaclub.co.uk

Number One is a community cafe in Scott Skinner Square. Apart from serving delicious homemade meals and cakes, the cafe also hosts workshops and meeting spaces. New this term is “and breathe” with Gillian. She uses a number of techniques including reiki and EFT to help you relax. Her taster session in October, see ad opposite, is a workshop for anyone who knows their life could be better than it is; and not by getting the newest phone, or more money, or a bigger house. If you would like to volunteer at Number One, no experience is necessary. Age is not a limit, our youngest has been 12 and oldest 85! Contact us on 01330 825000 or email numberonebanchory@gmail.com

The Banchory Philosophy Discussion Group held another session at Number One in Banchory in July. Our topic was “What does God mean to me”, and eight members were round the table with a comforting cup of tea to discuss this weighty subject. I must admit to having had some qualms in tackling what could be such a deep and potentially divisive issue, but in actual fact, what came out was the degree of common ground amongst us – maybe because we were focusing on what the idea of a God meant to us, more than the detail of what that God was, and how it/she/he manifested in the structures and mores of the various Churches and Religious dogmas. It was interesting also in that a number of members who identified themselves as Atheist/Agnostic were comfortable in defining “what something about the Universe means to me” in terms that were similar and so compatible with some of the more overtly “religious” terms. One personal thought – If only all “religious” discussions could end with such a positive and unifying outcome! As always, if anyone would like to join us, please contact Bob Russell at russellb@ lodgeconsultancy.com or 01330 820376, we plan generally to keep meetings to the first Thursday of the month.

News from the area’s premier arts and entertainment venue, as it celebrates 25 years!

Did you know that over the last 25 years the Barn arts centre in Banchory has continually improved and expanded the reach of its creative programme, and thanks to the efforts of the community, we are proud to have grown to become the largest arts venue in Aberdeenshire and part of Creative Scotland’s national portfolio of supported arts venues? Each year we deliver an ambitious and diverse programme for all ages, that encompasses performances, screenings, exhibitions, artists’ support programmes, talks, festivals, environmental learning projects and a community-focused programme of workshops, events and children’s activities that attract over 20,000 visitors each year. 2019 is a special year for the Barn as it marks 25 years of our operation as well as delivering an ambitious capital expansion phase in our charity’s development. Work is now under way on a new larger reception area and foyer to better accommodate audiences at sell-out shows and private hires, and on the development of our adjoining farm sheds to create a bespoke retail craft space, FOLD, to support more artists and creative businesses to continue working in Aberdeenshire. How You Can Help We have a fundraising target to raise £25,000 this year • £25 – everyone who donates £25 will receive a to a celebratory performance at the Barn in September 2019. • £250 - £2,500 – any business who donates either £250 or £2,500 will become a member of the Barn’s Business Club benefit from our extensive marketing activity as well as fulfilling your company’s Corporate and Social Responsibility commitments. For more information visit www.thebarnarts.co.uk You can donate online at www. thebarnarts.co.uk/support/donate or in person at the Barn. Every donation makes a real difference and we thank you as always for your continued support. Here’s to the next 25 years! The Barn is run by Woodend Arts Limited, a registered Scottish Charity SC022620.

Dibble’s Doodles: late summer lawn tips The necessity to have an early deadline in the printing world means that you will not get these pearls of wisdom for some time after they have actually been written. Knowing the vagaries of the British weather there could likely have been flood/fire/ pestilence or a plague of locusts by the beginning of September. However, as I put fingers to keyboard, it is hot and sticky and that includes yours truly. The weeds have been growing like, er, weeds. The slugs have been having a field day feasting on my runner beans and dahlias and the garden looks like a scene from The Day of the Triffids. I have just spent the afternoon dead-heading the flowers but it will be worthwhile as the plants will keep flowering for much longer. I read a Lloyds Bank research article recently which says that, if you are Mr/ Mrs Average, you will make several trips to your local Garden Centre over the summer and spend £170 between April and September. I assume that means there will be some who spend far more, which is great for the centres. I try to refrain from buying anything other than specimen hardy perennials as they can last for years, providing of course that you nurture them. However, I have an aversion to spending a fortune buying annual plants which will just end up on the compost heap at the end of the summer. There is a local Gardening Club – it is actually 100 years old in October – and their Plant Sale in May sells some real bargains! Lawn Tip: One of the most common diseases of lawns is red thread lawn fungus. The disease or fungus causes the grass leaf (not the grass plant) to die often giving the lawn a blotchy appearance. Whilst the disease is active the blotches will have a pink colouration and on closer inspection you will see 2mm long pink threads or needles. Do not

10

confuse with the dead grass caused by bitch urine – from a female dog, not the wife. Red thread attacks from May onwards favouring humid and mild weather (over 16C). Early and late summer temperatures with a dewy grass are ideal though the drying effect of summer on your lawn can disguise the disease leading most people to assume wrongly that the lawn is just suffering from drought. Light frequent watering in the evening in warm weather will guarantee an attack. To remedy the problem the timing skills of a green keeper are required which makes treatment a problem. Personally I wouldn’t bother. Once conditions improve, the lawn will recover with no lasting damage. Happy gardening, Percy Dibble

Business Focus: Banchory Spinal Health When you are in pain, nothing feels quite as it should. Day-to-day tasks become much more difficult and even enjoyable things like spending a nice day with the children or grandchildren can become a worry… How will you get through it? What if your whole day gets ruined? Of course, you can take painkillers… a quick fix for some. This is great if they work, as long as your body doesn’t react to them, you don’t become reliant on them and you don’t hurt yourself by doing something that your body was trying to tell you NOT to do in the first place. Studies have shown repeatedly that longterm use of painkillers is ineffective and could be detrimental to your health. With no other alternative, the future can feel hopeless, this is part of the reason why chronic pain sufferers are also often depressed. At Banchory Spinal Health, we are experts when it comes to chronic pain. We know how much pain can prevent you from doing what you love, so we make it our job to reduce that pain and more importantly help you to STAY out of pain and have a better quality of life! Our team of experienced Chiropractors, Osteopaths, Massage Therapists and Clinic Assistants work together to provide the best care possible for you – from the moment you

walk through the door you will be welcomed into our clinic family and we will do everything we can to make your experience with us as enjoyable as possible. One of the most common things people say to us after they have experienced a massive improvement in their health and wellbeing is ”I wish I had come sooner…” It is for that reason that we have decided to make a commitment to our community. We are making sure that never again we hear that people have not heard about us and what we have to offer. So, until October 31st, we are offering an unbelievable discount for you and your loved ones. This discount is for your New Patient Consultation, which includes: 1. A full history 2. Play Creates a Buzz

A new play by local artist Mel Shand is set to have Finzean Hall buzzing with a topical subject matter later in September. Coming from the same pen as the very successful alter:Nativity (2015), the story highlights the current global bee crisis and what can be done to help. Audience members are invited to come inside the hive and see from a bee’s perspective and its parallels with community life. Interspersed with popular songs, the community play aims to be joyful and informative – join the swarm and be kind!
