Welcome to Issue 6 of The Fly. I’m delighted to say that interest in all three magazines in the Myriad Pro stable has swelled again in the new year, with all the spring editions increasing their page number upwards. I'm sure in the case of the Fly this is an indication of confidence in business in the town and while there will always be pockets of less desirable visions, the mood is most definitely on the up! A flick through these pages tells you all you need to know about the fantastic groups and organisations going great guns with events and initiatives for all. There’s a new Fun Corner for the kids on p27 and youngsters are also invited to send their creations, written or drawn, to The Fly for publication and all-round glory. If you have any ideas for features or regular information that should be between these pages, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Any events or news that appears between publications can be spread via our Facebook page. Remember you can also read The Fly online at issuu.com Thank you to all our advertisers and to anyone who contributed copy. If you want in, give us a shout. Our cover photo is a taste of the seasons to come from Bellwood Rose Garden.

Initiative appeals for help in eradicating High Street "blot" Banchory District Initiative has turned to social media to help kickstart negotiations to rejuvenate a prominent empty shop. The town's High Street has recently seen a number of units filled with new shops and, according to the group's Facebook post, is "coming back to life". But the former Subway at the traffic lights is described as a "major blot on the landscape... one of the most visual windows." Hoping that some publicity will assist in moving progress forward, the group states that "all contact with landowners and agents has hit a brick wall". BDI has a managing committee (board) comprising of Banchory residents. The group helps local people develop projects that benefit the town and surrounding area.

Dibble’s Doodles: on Old Wives' Tales... There are lots of old wives' gardening tales that have been carried down through the ages. Many originate when a crop is successful and, hoping for the same good fortune next time, we look for factors that may have contributed to the success. However, just because your tomato crop flourished with Epsom salts or sugar in the soil doesn’t mean the salt or sugar caused your crop to flourish. And just because three crows squawked when you planted your awesome beans, doesn’t mean beans grow better when crows are squawking! 1. Are Epsom salts good for roses? No. Soil should be tested to find out if there are any deficiencies. The idea that Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulphate) acts as some sort of magical fertiliser regardless of soil conditions is unfounded. 2. Are coffee grounds good for the garden? There is some evidence to substantiate this. They provide beneficial nitrogen but you need a variety of things for healthy compost and soil. You could make coffee grounds one of the additions to the compost heap. 3. Myth about planting: When planting a new tree or shrub, do not replace the soil in the planting hole with organic material such as compost. The tree will do better if you reuse the soil you removed from the hole. Advice to new gardeners – ignore the wives’ tales and just start growing stuff. The garden is the best teacher and experience will bring you more success than a sprinkle of this, a dash of that, or waiting for a particular cycle of the moon to plant your seeds. Yes, I know, lots of people swear by that one and, while harmless, it might make your crop late by waiting for the desired planting time Old wives' tales vary greatly. They range from just plain funny or wasteful to good common sense

12

substantiated by scientific research. But there’s also some that are actually harmful to plants, soil, and the environment, and that’s when it’s best to step back and reevaluate your choices. Seeds – it is the time of year when all the garden centres are stocked up with a dazzling array of seed packets. However, don’t believe that what you see on the packet is what you will always get later in the year. Take the pictures with a pinch of salt. I was asked recently why there were so many seeds in one packet – my last purchase of lobelia had 2,000. Most of the price of the seeds is the cost of growing the parent plants, the labour of harvest, packaging, advertising, sending out in response to orders, etc. For every batch of seeds there is a possibility that several won't germinate. So, plant more than you need in the pot/seed tray then when they have germinated ‘prick-out’ the ones that look the weakest. You’ll likely still have too many but you can always give any spare to friends. Despite the seed packet instructing that the seeds should be planted “in the year….” I have had success growing seeds that are several years past their sell by date. Just store in a cool dry place. These instructions do not apply if you are buying F1 hybrids where you will be lucky to get more than 6 seeds in the pack! A toddler was found chewing on a slug. After the initial surge of disgust the parent said, "Well, what does it taste like?" "Worms," was the reply.

Cover story: Rose Garden puts pieces together BellďŹ eld Rose Garden recently took some time out for reflection by completing a jigsaw in Banchory Library, leading to some "nice conversations and long companionable silences"...! Plans for this year include relocating the bug hotel to allow for a small seating area. Some stumps are also going to be removed to make room for a couple of high raised beds and a bench. Bellfield Rose Garden is a Bonnie Banchory project that aims to turn the area near the car park into a community wellbeing and edible garden. Help, constructive comments and visits are welcomed. Volunteers gather from noon onwards on Tuesdays. Email info@banchory.org or phone 01330 823856 if you would like to help.

“The play’s the thing.” - Hamlet Maybe we’re not quite Shakespeare but your local theatre group continues in its quest to entertain, says Drew Young. Our annual pantomime, ‘Return to Tweasure Island’ directed by Paul Foy, played to satisfactorily large audiences at the beginning of December and was enjoyed by everyone involved. Starring Black Doug, Long Jane Sliver, Deaf Pew and the Spanish Inquisition the panto gave a new twist to the old tale. Indeed it had so many twists that RL Stevenson must be birling in his grave. We’ve now moved on to the SCDA Festival of One-Act Plays where the club will present ‘Snowed Under’, a comedy by Anne Marie Latter. Directed by Iain (Black Doug) Bovaird and starring Karen, Morag and Graeme the play will go on (by the time anyone reads this it ‘will have gone on’) in the Craig Centre for Performing Arts in late February. Watch this space to find out if we’ve made it to the second round. Finally. We’ve got a website. If you’re interested in the club, especially if you’d like to get involved, check out banchorydramaclub.co.uk or email us at banchorydramaclub@gmail.com.

Reclaiming My Body A beginners' perspective on Pilates

Winter has played havoc with my body. Too much time spent indoors, moving very little, stodgy foods, the excesses of the season, I feel lethargic and stiff swaddled in layers of forgiving clothes. With the days stretching and spring on the horizon, the prospect of shedding some of those layers horrifies me. Time to motivate myself to get moving, tone up, stretch out, feel better within myself and even lose a few pounds. I keep hearing and reading about Pilates. That’s supposed to be good for us, isn’t it? I decide to go for it at The Pilates Hut at Inchmarlo. Local – tick. Plenty parking – tick. Signing up was the easy bit. Turning up for the first class… not so easy. Would everyone be bendy experts clad in skin tight Lycra? Will I make a fool of myself? Taking a deep breath I jump in. Everyone is “normal”, friendly and welcoming. The studio has a gentle buzz, a calming atmosphere and the most stunning view. My fears begin to evaporate. The teacher is fun and friendly and takes the time to explain everything in detail, even how to stand. We focus on posture and small gentle movement to get the body warm. Nothing that will get the heart rate racing. It feels good. Next, we work on our balance. I discover to my horror I can’t stand on one leg! Surely I do this all the time, but here, with the focus on posture, control

and accuracy it’s tricky. And I’m not the only one finding it a challenge. We all giggle a little as we wobble. For the main part of the class we roll down to the mat and carefully ease ourselves to a comfortable lying position. My mind begins to drift as we “breathe”. Surely we all know how to breathe? The accompanying movements are simple and subtle. Can this really be doing anything? A bit of focus and concentration and I begin to be aware that it is indeed doing something. “Connecting with my centre” I think I’m doing pretty well. The teacher thinks not. How can she tell? A tiny, tactful adjustment makes a vast difference. Four classes in and I’ve discovered it’s fun to move and stretch and twist. I’m beginning to feel that lightness which comes from developing a strong, supple body. And that joy of movement has surprising benefits too. It calms me. It quietens my nervous system, destresses me from the rigours of the day and frees my mind to allow time for selfreflection, which I now acknowledge isn’t an indulgence. It’s a necessity in these times. After only a short time I find the movements come naturally to me, and not only in class but as I go about my day. My posture has improved, my concentration is sharper and I’m building stamina. Spring? Bring it on. I’ve reclaimed my body!

What a pain in the neck! Did you know the average human head weighs between 8-10lbs? That’s the same as a bowling ball! The reason that we mostly don’t notice this is because our neck is set up with its own shock absorbing system called your cervical lordosis. This refers to the gentle curve in your neck that helps with the normal weight balance of your head. However, in a modern lifestyle we are all spending far too much time in a slouched position with a Forward Head Carriage (FHC). Prolonged periods of time sitting at a desk, driving, stress and being attached to phones and tablets is causing nothing short of a postural epidemic! Studies have shown that for every inch your head moves forward, another 10lbs of force is put through the joints and muscles in your neck! This effect is similar to carrying something close to your body versus carrying it at arms length. The real problem here is the length of time we spend in this FHC position. Imagine how many hours today you have spent looking at a screen of some kind, driving or slouched on the sofa. When you think about it that way, it’s hardly a surprise that so many people suffer with neck pain and headaches too. So why is this so bad? A study of over 6,000 people who suffered with chronic headaches found only one thing in common – a reduced cervical lordosis.

We also know from research studies that postural changes can lead to a decreased lung capacity (up to 30%) and can increase the likelihood of developing osteoarthritis in your spine. These negative changes in your body don’t have to be the norm! The first point of action should absolutely be to reduce the amount of time spent in this posture. The next step is to seek professional advice and treatment, this will fast-track you to feeling well again and reduce your neck pain and headache symptoms, as well as ruling out any more serious causes of these complaints. Here at Banchory Spinal Health we are a team of highly trained team of Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Massage therapists; experts at helping our patients understand the underlying cause of their pain and providing specialist treatment without the use of medication. Curious about what we do? Give us a call on 01330 824040 or email info@ banchoryspinalhealth.co.uk – or why not attend our Open Day on Saturday 28th March between 9am and 12pm where we are offering FREE spinal health checks. Booking is essential for this event so get in touch to avoid disappointment. Can’t wait until the 28th March? Path builders delighted with project's finale 700m were three years in the making, writes David Culshaw

Banchory Paths Association has just completed the largest project in its 20-year history, to further improve accessibility to the town’s extensive path network. The project, to rebuild two former paths into Corsee Woods has been three years in the preparation and planning and has created a well-drained, well surfaced loop in the woods which also connects with the Banchory Circular Path. The work involved forming paths 1.5m wide and just under 700m total length, accessible to all users. The site work took almost four weeks and involved laying some 500 tonnes of material, with completion just before Christmas. The cost was over £30,000 and BPA is grateful to the many sponsors, which include: National Lottery, Banchory Community Council (Mid Hill Wind Farm), Marr Area Large Projects, Paths for All, King George V Wind Farm, Shell UK, Tesco Bags of Help, and The Co-op. There were also many private sponsors who supported me on my round-Scotland

24

Cycle, or who sponsored the project directly. A huge thank you to all. It has been most gratifying to see so many people using the new paths over the festive season and in particular to see many users with impaired mobility now able to use them. The contractor for the work was CR Contracting (North), a local firm based at Ballogie. They are to be thanked for completing the work timeously and to a very high standard and which will blend in well with the natural surroundings. The whole project was carried out with the permission and assistance of the landowner, Forestry and Land Scotland. BPA is currently working with Aberdeenshire Council to improve another local path, from Woodside Road to Wilson Road. Teams of volunteers have put considerable effort into the preparatory work, including cutting back vegetation and initial spadework. A contractor will be carrying out surfacing and drainage improvements early in the new year.

EU citizen* feeling in the dark about Brexit? Inchmarlo Community Workshop (ICW, known locally as The Bothy) is a community facility open to any man or woman over 18 years old, who lives within Inchmarlo and environs. You can come along and get involved in any type of activity that might require sawing, drilling, turning, sharpening, sanding, fixing or creating. Current and just completed projects include making shoe boxes for Banchory Sports Village, restoring an elaborate main gate for a local estate, and making and installing three community notice boards for Feughdee Community Council. Basic woodwork classes are held over every winter, with the third in the series currently at the mid-way point. The ICW has recently received planning permission for an extension which will triple the floor space available for projects and activities. The workshop is open to anyone to come and get involved, even if a blether over a cup of tea is all that is required. It is usually open Mondays and Wednesdays 9.30am to 4pm, and Saturdays 9am to 1pm. It is located opposite Inchmarlo Hall at Bridge of Canny. Banchory Men’s Shed has fully arrived. The Banchory and District Men’s Shed Phase 1 Workshop opened in November 2019 as reported in the last issue. Hot on the heels of that, building of the social and general area started on 12th November and was complete by February. The work encountered only small obstacles (such as “only” a wee seam of granite!) but all these were sorted out quickly with the result that the full Shed premises are now open and the Banchory Men’s Shed finally moves from the years of planning and building to the operating phase. The Men’s Sheds movement started in Australia a while ago and has spread across the world, with 130 sheds already open in Scotland and another 50 in the planning. They provide a place for men with time on their hands such as in retirement, or who can become isolated, to get together for social and practical collaboration and they have shown proven benefits for the health and wellbeing of men. Since the Banchory Shed gained its real home with Phase 1 last year, the membership has continued to rise steadily and with the full premises open further members are expected. Plans include a wide range of events, with of course the core social and workshop activities, but also fabrication and repair help to local community groups and good causes, computing and IT classes/surgeries, silversmithing classes, and Bridge. But importantly, all ideas will be considered so if you are interested in joining and/or have a particular idea, please get in contact. The Fly LOVES Business!

The Banchory Fly relies on advertising to pay for design and printing. But our advertisers are not just a space on a page. All advertisers also benefit from featuring in a Facebook album every quarter, and where advertisers’ posts are seen, they are shared. Feel free to tag The Fly to make sure we see it. New businesses who advertise can also benefit from introductory features, and there are perks to being a longterm advertiser too, or featuring in our Aboyne and Alford publications also. The business landscape and publicity methods are changing all the time so if you have any ideas on how The Fly can further support you, do let us know. No matter if you are on the High Street, out in the sticks, working from your spare room or just online, get in touch.
