Welcome to Issue 7 of The Fly. Life is a rollercoaster. After a welcome boost in the spring, all Myriad Pro summer editions are slimmed volumes, owing to a dearth of events to report on, thanks to our 2020 shadow, Covid-19. As group activity is suspended, the Club Directory has been parked. Gone too are door-to-door deliveries for the moment. Even if restrictions allowed such an activity, I figured in any event householders might not thank me for it, so distribution has been limited to shops that people are visiting anyway. Huge thanks to Tesco, the Co-ops and Morrison's supermarkets. Our cover photo is by Fenneke Wolters-Sinke. In these testing times, thanks are due in spades to all the advertisers, established and new. They say in a crisis you should never stop advertising...! We need to continue to support local and each other as best we can. We will bounce back. Remember that community information is FREE to include in these pages, so if you have any news for the autumn, tell me about it by August 1st if you can. Best wishes to all affected by this virus, and kudos to everyone fighting it on the front lines. Hang in there, folks!

Planning permission granted for new Skate Park Match funding appeal launched to turn dream into reality

Planning permission has been granted for a new skate park at Bellfield Park. The group behind the project is now fundraising to get the scheme o the ground. They have already hosted a number of fundraising events and secured 25% of the £240,000 budget but need the rest to keep the project moving forwards. You can find out more about the plans by visiting the group's Facebook page @ BanchorySkatePark or by calling 07711 596102. Donations can be made at www. gofundme.com/f/banchory-skatepark

Jean Henretty updates us on the activities of Banchory's Resilience Team Hub

Well what a difference a virus makes! Our lives are all upside down now, all businesses including the Number One Cafe in Banchory were closed. The lockdown closed our doors but only temporarily as we quickly realised that there was a need to support people through this crisis. As part of the Banchory Community Resilience Team the cafe staff and volunteers have been answering the emergency telephones and providing food parcels. As it looks like the cafe will be closed for some time we have learned to adapt and now use the facility as an emergency food bank. As a member of Fareshare we can receive donations of excess and "waste” food from the local supermarkets which is distributed to people who are unable to go shopping. The “waste” is food which has reached its 'use by' date or has damaged packaging. We now have a team of about 20 people who collect food on an evening and have it bagged and delivered next day. In one week we have delivered to 50 households which included 63 children. A lesson learnt was that not everyone has the facilities or the knowledge to cook. Some

parcels have been like ready steady cook what do you do with a whole chicken, a tin of potatoes and packet of frozen mixed veg if you don't have a freezer or an oven? So to help people, we are now cooking the food in the cafe and providing nutritious ready meals for free to anyone who needs it. The whole chicken can now become a delicious roast dinner, a curry or a chicken casserole delivered straight to your door. As it looks like some people may be housebound for a few months we will continue to provide the service throughout the summer. If you would like a free ready meal or know someone who would appreciate a rest from cooking contact us on 01330 825000 between 10-2pm Monday to Saturday. Number One is a social enterprise charity based in Scott Skinner Square. If you would like to make a donation to the food bank please contact us by email numberonebanchory@gmail.com

Get ready to Run Banchory: any distance, at a distance! Scott Birse has a plan to put us through our paces

The annual Run Banchory event was due to take place on Sunday 14th June. Obviously, this was cancelled due to Covid-19. Despite this, I felt it was important to help lift community spirits and create a safe event that can still bring some positive cheer to the area. Therefore, it is Run Banchory's aim to have as many individuals, families etc safely running the streets of Banchory and beyond on the proposed day of our run – Sunday 14th June 2020. All you need to do is walk or run 1 mile, 5k or 10k on Sunday 14th June at any given time. You can simply run anywhere you want for the set distance you choose. This is not competitive and you don't have to be an avid runner to get involved. The aim is to safely encourage as many people as possible to be physically active and to feel positive about themselves working at their own pace. Once you have completed your run, you then post a pic from your GPS app (strava, mapmyrun etc) for evidence and a 'happy smiley face' of yourself or family on to the Run Banchory FB page. In addition to this, you can also donate through the JustGiving page www.justgiving. com/crowdfunding/runforbanchory2020, with all proceeds going towards supporting individuals and groups in the local area affected by Covid-19. All donations are suggested and it is not mandatory. All runners (if requested) will receive a medal specifically designed to allow them to remember their participation in the event. Further information can be found at Run Banchory's Facebook page, 07808 093897, or runbanchory@outlook.com www.sb-fitness.co.uk

• I suspect animals feel the same way in the zoo as we do in lockdown. • We can all survive without junk food. • Despite all the controls on our lives we thankfully cannot stop the green shoots of spring. • The next door neighbour’s cat’s ninth life is in jeopardy. • Football professionals are not in the same league as health professionals. • Remember to put brain in gear before commenting on social media. • Must not watch more than 10 minutes of news per day. • It would be worrying if crystal-ball gazing was as accurate as hindsight. • After years of wanting to thoroughly clean my house but lacking the time, the last month has proved this wasn’t the reason. • There are 7,841 holes in my flour sieve. • When things return to normal I will have to decide whether to go

My greenhouse has 1,034 plant pots, most of which are of a useless size. Having had far fewer humans around on which to feed, will there be a dearth of midges this year? In an unsettling reversal of his teenage years, our son is now yelling at his parents for going out. I must learn how to do a successful rain dance. Banchory Community Council

Banchory Community Council activated its local resilience plan and the Banchory Community Resilience Team (BCRT) in late March as we all went into lockdown. BCRT got straight to work using its resilience plan template by establishing contact numbers, email contact and establishing links to No 1 in its role as a community hub. Resilience volunteers (individuals and groups) were activated as part of the resilience plan and leafletted the village detailing the BCRT's contact details for those in need of a little assistance (please see contact details on the opposite page). Our three councillors and Aberdeenshire Council provided invaluable advice and support during this early stage of establishment by the BCRT – their encouragement and direction has proven invaluable to the team. Since this busy first week, the team have handled over 100 requests from households in our community. These requests are from those more vulnerable members of the community who are either self-isolating or shielding in their homes and whose needs our BCRT are uniquely placed to assist with locally. Our volunteers are making food deliveries, prescription pick-ups and drop-offs, newspaper deliveries and most recently a friendship service for those in our community who just want a friendly chat or catch-up. Through our FB page, contact network and leaflet drops in Banchory we have moved to support our local businesses by directing our community to local business which can support their needs with deliveries and services – we are constantly amazed by the flexibility and continuous kind gestures our local businesses make within our community, thank-you all. As the lockdown progressed,

18

the COVID 19 Hub in Aberdeen began its central role of disseminating information and requests – in doing so our BCRT now co-ordinates and actions incoming local issues from this central hub. These issues tend to be more complex in nature and the team have assisted community carers, live-in carers and some of our most vulnerable community members source the appropriate services and support. The BCRT has also been able to provide support to our neighbouring communities in Inchmarlo, Echt, Strachan and Drumoak – our goal remains to provide support to our community and to be good neighbours to those around us. The BCRT are so impressed by the many, many volunteers offering their time in supporting our community – a big 'thank-you' to all our volunteers.

Dess-based outdoor clothing company Hilltrek has begun producing face masks in response to the Covid-19 shortages. The masks are made from a double layer of Ventile, a tightly woven waterresistant and highly breathable fabric which is used in their clothing ranges. Adult size is priced at £10 and junior £7.50, with 10% of sales being donated to a local charity. Hilltrek say they will continue to donate masks to carers and care organisations local to them. They are not PPE and not for medical use. Available with elastic or cotton ties, they are machine washable. Government guidance suggests masks oer little protection to the wearer but can protect others around them. In May Nicola Sturgeon said mask-wearing may be encouraged to assist in limiting the spread of Covid-19 once current restrictions have been lifted. You can order the masks online at https://hilltrek.co.uk/clothing/gaitersmitts-and-masks/ Contact sales@hilltrek.co.uk for further information.

Lady V’s Shoes

This is a very strange time that we are living in, isn’t it? Everyone is on an emotional rollercoaster (or CoronaCoaster if you will). At Casa K my dining room is now doubling up as a makeshift classroom, I have taken to wearing a facemask when out and about (which my daughter informs A column on village life, borrowed from me make me “look like a toucan”), and a The Fountain, by Victoria Kennedy tall, dark and handsome man by the name of Joe Wicks lunges at me every morning from my computer screen. I won’t lie, I seldom lunge back, but he does make for a very soothing background noise as I enjoy my tea and croissants. Lockdown has thrown Britain a curveball like we have never experienced before. While many have taken this opportunity to learn a new skill or increase their fitness levels, I have made the most of the slower pace by reading more. I devoured a few classic Famous Five books for some childish escapism, dived into Norse mythology and, most recently, reread “Self-Care for the Real World” (Nadia Narain). Self-care is important at any time but at a time like this it is essential. It looks different for everyone, and some may not even know what it is for them personally yet. At the start of the book the authors suggest making two lists, one of things that make you feel good and one of things that make you feel bad. I did this last night and I was surprised when I looked at my lists and realised that I am unintentionally doing a lot more from my ‘bad’ list than my ‘good’. Late nights, too much alcohol (Bored-eaux anyone?), mindless web browsing… the list goes on. Luckily though, living here means ensuring that items from my ‘Good’ list are ticked off will be easy. Walks in the woods, fresh fruit and veg, supporting the community and staying connected with those that I care about can still be done in the current situation. I am so thankful that we live in an area of such outstanding natural beauty, which we can access from our doors, and that there are local businesses that provide us with everything we need, as well as smiles and well wishes. So, just a gentle reminder for you at this time, you cannot pour from an empty vessel. Take care of yourself. I promise it’s worth it.

Garden provides oasis in troubling times Bellfield project thriving, writes Beatrice Charnley

Garden Reflections...

A diverse range of activities are under way for the Spring/Summer season. In February, Aberdeenshire Green space initiative provided us with over 4,000 bulbs of small blue Chionadoxas and four varieties of alliums were planted by an enthusiastic bunch of volunteers. Aberdeenshire Landscape Services arranged for a delivery of soil enhancer and for a local contractor to give the cherry tree a long awaited pruning. The team got to work to enhance what was a sad corner (see photo). No garden could thrive without water, and the Bellfield Rose Garden has to thank the supportive local Fire Service for its delivery of water. The garden benefits from many invisible hands and acts of generosities. Many new plants have been added, some bought, many gifted; Hellabores, Heucheras, Clematis, Honeysuckle, three new rose plants and much more.… This year, we have adopted the squaremetre planting technique and three planters are awaiting to grow vegetables and herbs. Some Pink Fir Apple potato seeds, broad beans and peas are in. The kale and broccoli are doing well! Coming soon, a bench and a low table for our mobilityreduced friends and carers. Do join us and our square-metre picnic blanket creative project – contact me for more details. beatricecharnley1@gmail.com numberonebanchory@gmail.com

"Bellfield garden is a haven to work in and to be part of. It has become a very special place to me”.

25 “It has been really helpful to have a sheltered, peaceful place full of beauty, particularly during this lockdown. Being able to contribute something to the community this way is very important to me.”
