Welcome to Issue 8 of The Fly. Sometimes I think there are no words available to describe the present situation. Mainly because it keeps changing! But it’s been swings and roundabouts again since the Summer issue, with tentative steps out followed by a hasty retreat. I am hopeful at the time of going to print that more copies of the magazines will be delivered through doors this time around... That said, I’m delighted with the level of support offered to Myriad Pro Publishing at this time. There are no less than five new advertisers in the Autumn Fly and there’s a special feature on p12 introducing some of these while outlining the benefits of using these community/ commercial publications to promote your business when the chips are down. Thanks to Heather Robb for our fabulous cover photo! The Fly has made a donation to the SSPCA on your behalf. Remember that community information is FREE to include in these pages, so if you have any news for the Winter eds, tell me about it by November 1st if you can. Best wishes to all affected by Covid, and thanks to everyone fighting it on the front lines. Keep hanging in there, folks!

HM Sheridan are members of the Scottish Craft Butchers, an organisation founded over 100 years ago to look after the interests and promote Scotland’s Craft Butchers. They are an organisation committed to ensuring customers can buy the finest meat and meat products in a food-safe, friendly and welcoming environment. HM Sheridan began trading in April 1963 using a converted garage and one van. Within a few years Michael Sheridan purchased his first shop in the village of Ballater and then in 1979 he purchased the Bridge Street premises, which had been a butcher's shop for over 120 years and is still going strong, selling a range of meats, poultry and game as well as deli products. HM Sheridan was granted the Royal Warrants of Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, Duke of Rothesay in 1987. Sadly, Michael passed away in 2006. He bequeathed the business to two of his long-term employees, John Sinclair and Barry Florence. They continue to provide a superb service to customers, markets, hotels and catering events within Aberdeenshire. They opened their second shop in Banchory in 2017.

Library Services A number of libraries in Aberdeenshire are now offering a Click and Collect service, and Banchory is one. The booking system allows you to collect reservations, order pre-selected library book bundles containing 10 items, pick up reading group collections, arrange a drop of your current loans and also pick up hearing aid batteries. To use Click and Collect, you can book directly through the Online Booking System, call 01467 532929, or use the Live Chat. Depending on the level of demand and use, it is expected that the Click and Collect service will then be rolled out to libraries in other communities. You’ll need to be a member of the library service to order book bundles or place reservations. If you’re not a member, you can join online too!

The Banchory Painted Rocks print is now available from the Banchory Craft Market or from Number One. Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action launched their AVA Community Spirit Awards at the beginning of July to recognise Community Spirit in our villages and towns during the lockdown and were overwhelmed by the response. CEO Dan Shaw said: “People have been nominating in their hundreds, the people in their community who have gone out of their way to help, support and put a smile on people’s faces during the pandemic. “Many award recipients have been nominated multiple times showing the impact they have had on their community. Several of our nominations are very young showing a sense of community spirit from a young age”. There are over 200 recipients of the AVA Community Spirit Award, including Banchory's Number One in Scott Skinner Square, and the full list can be found in AVA’s most recent newsletter, their website www.avashire.org.uk or on Facebook.

Planning For A Good End

Mum helps others in new career The loss of a beloved son has led an Aberdeenshire mum to offer bereaved families a personalised way to remember loved ones. When Ben Gray died suddenly, his family wanted to remember him in a way that paid tribute to the man he was. His mum, Isabel Addison, said: “Ben lived with Cystic Fibrosis, which we knew would limit his life, but when we lost him it was a terrible shock. "We wanted Ben’s service to reflect who he was, and so as a family we gathered together the limited pieces of information he had shared. The only thing we knew for certain was that he wanted his guitar placed on top of his coffin. "Ben loved playing his guitar and was passionate about it. He especially loved 70s rock music. Ben’s dad said that Ben wanted Burn by Deep Purple played at his funeral.” But other than that, everything was guess work. It was an extremely stressful and worrying time. Even now Isabel still questions if she got it right. When it came to his eulogy, Isabel wrote that herself, collecting stories from family and friends and getting those close

to Ben involved, especially his closest friend. Often Isabel would think: “I wish I’d known that about him when he was alive.” Working in care management, Isabel came across people who were approaching the end of their lives. She would often ask if they had thought about what they wanted to happen when the time came and most had never had that discussion with their loved ones. On one occasion when she asked this question her client responded by saying her son refused to discuss this and that she was relieved to be having that conversation with someone. As a result, Isabel has trained and is now an accredited Independent Funeral Celebrant. This means that she can plan and run a funeral or memorial service that is a true reflection of the deceased. She is also offering a Funeral Planning service where your wishes are recorded so that your loved ones do not have to worry if they are getting it right.

Talking to the living about death is never easy, but it is an accepted part of coming to terms with the end of life, with cancer charities recommending the step after a terminal diagnosis. Isabel feels it is important that other families have the opportunity to have a deeply personal and loving funeral: “Being able to remember the person the way they want to be remembered is very important and I work with the family to make it a commemoration of the person, their life and loves.” At a time when we are unable to say goodbye to our loved ones the way we would like, Isabel is also able to advise on memorial events: “It’s important that we come together to share our memories, as it is an important part of our healing. I hope that what I am doing is able to help, even in a small way.” Call 07846 689884 or email isabel@ legacycelebrant.org.uk

CAB still here to help South West Aberdeenshire Citizens Advice Bureau has continued to provide advice and support services by phone and email throughout lockdown. Based in Westhill, the advice charity covers Deeside and most of Donside, including Drumoak, Banchory, Aboyne, Tarland Strathdon, Ballater, Braemar, Torphins, Lumphanan, and Alford. Recent additions to its operating area are Kintore, Kemnay, Blackburn and Newmachar. The Bureau has been operating on a skeleton staff, co-ordinating advice activities from its office base, with many of its volunteer advisers and specialist staff working from home for the last four months.

Bureau Manager Eveline Crossan said. “Although it hasn’t been possible to see our clients face-to-face, we have continued to provide the best service we can by phone and email. We are also testing video calling as an alternative to meeting our clients. Over the last few months, benefits advice has accounted for 46% of our total enquiries, and we have also provided employment advice and interpretation of the various employment support schemes for individuals and businesses, which rose to over 30% of our enquiries. Sadly, the other significant increase has been about relationship breakdown, including domestic abuse.” She added, “We haven’t rested on our laurels during lockdown. We’ve appointed four new members of staff. Three will continue an existing service: Help to Claim Universal Credit; Money and Debt Advice; and extending our Outreach Service in

preparation for a phased return to work. "The fourth is a Gambling Support Service Training and Engagement Officer, who will link with local groups and individuals to explain the sources of help available to people with a gambling addiction and their families”. Anyone with an enquiry should call 01224 747714 or email via the Bureau website on www.swacab.org.uk or directly email enquiries@swacab.org.uk. Callers should be aware that their call will be returned from a with-held number. Alternatively, call the Aberdeenshire CAB Helpline on 0800 028 1032.

The Fly relies on advertising to pay for design and printing and it means a lot that so many regular customers have continued to advertise during the Covid calamity. I am just as delighted to welcome several new advertisers recently too, many of which feature on these pages here. At Myriad Pro Publishing, advertisers are not just a space on a page. All advertisers benefit from featuring in a Facebook album every quarter, and where advertisers’ own posts are seen on that social media platform, they will be shared. Feel free to tag The Fly to make sure. New customers can also benefit from introductory features, and there are perks to being a long-term advertiser too, as well as discounts for featuring in the Alford and Aboyne publications. The business landscape and publicity methods are changing all the time, and especially at the moment! So if you have any ideas on how The Fly can further support you, do let me know. No matter if you are on the main street, out in the sticks, working from your spare room or just operating online, I can help.

When times are tough, don’t stop ADVERTISING!

Dibble’s Doodles – Language Maers Let's face it – English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. Quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. Then come the pronunciations. It is surprising what a single letter difference makes. Womb and tomb do not sound the same as bomb (although the latter will make a ‘boom’ if you are not careful). Comb is another variant. Bough, cough, dough and rough all sound differently. Spelling can cause problems when apostrophes are included (or not as the case may be), your and you’re (meaning ‘you are’), there, they’re (they are) and their. Some words and phrases have been incorporated into everyday usage although they make a linguist cringe. ‘Train up’ – what’s wrong with just ‘train’? ‘Fairly unique’, an item is either unique or it is not unique. ‘At this moment in time’ – a verbose way of saying ‘Now’. ‘Gotten’ is an awful American word for ‘got’. There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other twoletter word, and that is ‘UP’. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little

15

word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn't rain for a while, things dry UP. We could go on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so... Time to shut UP!
