Can You Out-Run the Bull? asks Gille Young

Introducing Alford’s First Mini Bull Run, for kids aged 5 to 12! This is a new fun-run event for 2018 to be held in the beautiful flower meadow of Haughton Park. It is organised on behalf of the Alford Primary Parent Council and Alford Running Club, to raise funds. Come along for a fun-filled morning on Saturday 29th September, and get involved in the several races being held for different age groups: • Age 5 and 6 – 600m • Age 7, 8 and 9 – 800m • Age 10, 11 and 12 – 1000m In the first race, the children will be chasing an Alford Bull character to encourage them to run! Entry fee is £5, and this includes a goodie bag and a handmade medal for all those who take part! Registration beside the Flower Meadow – the registration tent and routes are all signposted on the day. The trails take place in the Flower Meadow at Haughton Park (beside the Trim Track and river). The routes allow for spectators to be present around the course. All runs are on narrow grassy paths within the grounds of Haughton Park, with the kind permission of Aberdeenshire Council. It is not a timed event, only a fun run, and there here are no overall prizes for winners.

4

Registration is pre-event only via entrycentral.com. For more information including race timings and registration details search for ‘Alford Mini Bull Run’ on Entrycentral. com. Search for the event on Facebook too for regular updates! We look forward to seeing you all there, and the Bull is ready and waiting for you! The event is organised by Alford Mini Bull Run Committee and kindly sponsored by many local businesses, including N.S.Wilson Pharmacy, Alford Co-Op, Tick Tock Play, The Running Shop and Derek J Brown Joinery Ltd.

After a hugely successful fundraising coffee morning last year, local bookkeeping company ESP Bookkeeping Services are doing it all again this year, to raise more funds for Macmillan cancer Support. Last year’s event was attended by over 100 people and raised over £850 for the charity. Owner of ESP Bookkeeping Suzanne Proctor said: “We were delighted by the response last year and we hope to do even better this year. Everyone is welcome – clients, friends and anyone who wants to support Macmillan and enjoy good company and a chat over a coffee and cake.” The event will take place at ESP’s office at Craigshannoch, Alford, Aberdeenshire AB33 8EE on Friday 28th September from 10am to 4pm and there will be a great selection of cakes, savouries,

7

teas and coffees. As usual there will be the opportunity to buy raffles and specially selected produce such as speciality cheeses from “The Damn Fine Cheese Company”. You are welcome to pop in at any time that suits you. Call ESP Bookkeeping Services on 01975 563411/07719 593997 for directions or further details.

Functional Reflex Therapy with Gillian Frost

Functional Reflex Therapy is a short, repetitive, ‘positive touch’ rhythmical routine consisting of eight relaxation reflexology techniques which may encourage the release of oxytocin (‘happy’ chemicals). This in turn may have a positive effect on the issues that affect individuals and the people around them in many areas of their everyday lives. FRT may encourage social interaction; support wellbeing; induce relaxation; reduce anxiety and encourage the receiver to be more receptive. The intention of Functional Reflex Therapy, using the reflexology framework, is to help the receiver cope better with ongoing activities; to help them be calm and support their wellbeing; helping to reduce high levels of anxiety and generally help the receiver be in a better frame of mind.

FUNCTIONAL REFLEX THERAPY The Funconal Reflex Therapy Framework for Reflexology is designed for supporng children and adults with:

• High Levels of Anxiety and Stress • Special Educaonal Needs and Disabilies • Ausc Spectrum Disorders and Complex Needs • Mental Health Condions • Alzheimers and Demena It may help the receiver to cope beer with ongoing acvies and reduce stress levels

Raised Bed Gardening with Classic Abode’s Moira Gash

Raised beds have many benefits, not least they are a perfect way for people with limited space to enjoy a garden. Some people even put them on their patios which is fine for plants that don’t need much root depth, like lettuce, broccoli, celery, or onions. They can be built from timber, bricks or concrete blocks, filed up with good soil and plenty of organic matter. The solid frames give them a well-defined look. The beds can be as high as you’d like them and prevents soil runoff during rain. Raised beds are narrow, giving access around them without having to walk on the beds, which prevents the soil from being compacted. They are also easier to water and harvest, so are especially good for people who have trouble bending over. They can

be ideal for mobility challenged gardeners as they can be spaced to accommodate the movement of wheelchairs. A hard surface would be needed between each bed to allow access. Raised beds are suitable for both vegetables and flowers alike.
